La Dolce Vita The Season October to May Welcome back! We hope you had a great summer. Since I spent the majority of mine in Europe, I have a lot to say. We’ll get to that a little later in this column. For now, it’s all things Evening of Trends. Here we go! You’ve probably heard by now that this year’s Evening of Trends which benefits the Trends Charitable Fund was a smashing success! 1995 Trendsetter Linda Surdakowski stepped up to the plate and decided to chair and changed just about everything associated with the more than 3 decades old affair. The Arizona Biltmore Resort did a great job transforming the Conference Center into a mystical Central Park themed night. Push carts gently glided by during the opulent cocktail reception, which also included a hot dog stand and many other nuances that only Linda and her team could bring to fruition. We made sure Ms. Surdakowski was thanked via our good friend and longtime partner Neiman Marcus. The main entrance to the ballroom greeted guests with a welcoming spray of hedges and shrubbery that led to a dance floor and a stage complete with park benches. Shortly after the cocktail reception, the 2017 Trendsetters were presented. Jan Cacheris arrived first in a smashing plum number.

By Bill Dougherty

She was followed by Billie Jo Herberger in shades of aqua and flora. Cheryl Londen looked stunning in a beautiful floral gown and stacks of sterling necklaces. The elegant Tahnia McKeever took to the stage in shades of midnight black. You could hear Deborah Pshebniski before she walked in. She blew the room away in gold sequins that shimmered and sparkled! Leslie Rich walked the stage in one of the most beautiful ball gowns imaginable in black and white. Mary Ann Sheely looked magnificent in scarlet red. Kristine Thompson was alluring in a beautiful understated dark blue sheath. Candice Wiest concluded the presentation in a lovely coral colored gown. The ladies were simply amazing. They have done so much to make our community a better place for so many who are less fortunate. The greatest asset these incredible ladies share is that they walked off the stage and right back into the trenches. This alone makes them a great force in Maricopa County. Laura Grafman who accepted our life time achievement award as our Fabulous Phoenician had a direct link to the first recipient of the

award back in 1985. The much adored and much missed Virginia Piper, who paved the way for so many in our community, shared a long and great friendship with Ms. Grafman. In her introduction, I was delighted to be able to have the opportunity to connect the first award with the award Ms. Grafman received that night. I knew Virginia Piper was looking down from heaven and she was so proud of what Laura Grafman has done in her wake since the great lady passed away. I can’t think of a better person to give this cherished award to then Laura Grafman: an angel, a leader and one of the finest ladies you will ever know. Congratulations! Stop me if you’ve already heard this? While in Europe this summer, I had the chance to tour a great deal of Italy, parts of Spain and France too. The Italians clearly blow everyone else away in my opinion. Rome, the la dolce vita capital of the world, is full of beautiful women in tight skirts, spiked high heels and red lipstick galore! The men all wear beautifully tailored suits, white dress shirts and solid colored ties. There’s not a sport coat to be seen and they gasp at American and British men who wear stupid socks and tan/ saddle oxford shoes. That topic alone could ignite an Italian fashion firestorm and I had the chance to partake in several of them. You get the picture? The South of France is still breath-taking. I hadn’t been there in more than 35 years. Cannes remains the suede loafer capital of the world. They come in all shapes and colors for women and men, but unfortunately run small in size. I was a bit disappointed to see the rubber stamp effect on this beautiful city. Gone are the

intriguing and discriminating stores and French boutiques that once graced the beautiful shore line of the Riviera. They have all been replaced with every high-end name and logo-inspired chain you can find in any shopping mall in any part of the world. How sad. We found the same to be true in Barcelona. However, I was taken by how much the city dropped into its beautification project for the Olympics a few years back. Tree-lined streets graced the city and everyone is chic and beautiful. It’s interesting that the majority of Europeans smoke, yet that continent has one of the lowest cancer rates in the world. Maybe it’s because they enjoy life so much more than we do? They think nothing of two-hour lunches, five dollar cups of Italian coffee and packs of cigarettes that cost several Euros a pack! Their entire infrastructure could be crumbling around them and they’d all still be sitting in an outdoor café. In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That a feud between four beautiful women and instigated by another need to stop, since we’ve all graduated from high school. That a beautiful blonde who was once at the top of her game, now seems to be scrapping her way thru life. Remember, honestly is always the best policy. That 3 women who have caused havoc on the social scene have returned with new vengeance. Where is the exterminator when you need one? That someone once famous in the world of black-tie elegance may have very well left the Valley for good and most didn’t even notice. Now you’re all caught up for the next 15 minutes.

INTERVIEW

A Few Minutes with ... Howard C. Katz Chairman, HonorHealth Foundation Board of Trustees Can you tell us a little about HonorHealth Foundation? HonorHealth Foundation was created by the merger of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation and John C. Lincoln Health Foundation. Today, HonorHealth Foundation is the philanthropic arm of HonorHealth, a non-profit, community-based health network. The goal of the Foundation is to build support for the many exemplary patient and community programs, services and projects which improve the health and well-being of the people in our communities. How did you first become involved with then Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation? My wife, Ellen and I moved to Arizona from New York in 1998. Our goal was to be very active in the community and support those organizations in which we are involved. When I choose to lend my support to an organization, I don’t like to sit on the sidelines. I really want to become engaged in the mission and purpose. I was first introduced to the Foundation by Mike Greenbaum. And, the rest is history! What do you like best about your role as Chairman of the HonorHealth Foundation Board of Trustees? In my role, I have the distinction of being involved at many different levels and with many people – donors, volunteers, physicians, employees and my fellow Trustees. It is my honor to serve on this distinguished board alongside such an outstanding group of men and women. You are active in several local non-profit organizations. Why is healthcare so important to you? Healthcare impacts each and every one of us at some time in our lives. We are very fortunate to have a local healthcare delivery system like HonorHealth. The type of expert medical care and research “firsts” offered through HonorHealth are typically found in academic settings. It is nice to know that this nationally recognized care is just around the corner, when we need it. I am very proud to say that philanthropy has played a crucial part in the exceptional patient services and programs offered through HonorHealth. And, going forward will continue to play an even more vital role. There is always something new and exciting in the healthcare industry and at HonorHealth. I feel very fortunate that I get to be a part of it.

TRENDS IN DINING

The Fat Ox By Laurie Florence Manucci On a recent evening, we had dinner at the Fat Ox. It is a new approach on Italian food. Simple yet bold, as they describe on their website and it did not fail to impress. This is another of Matt Carter’s, The Mission and Zinc Bistro’s creations.

samic, anchovy, tomato croutons, parmesan and extra virgin olive oil. Several people around us ordered that and it did look quite impressive. Our waiter suggested ordering a pasta dish to share, so we went with his recommendation of the simple but flavorful garganelli with truffle butter. All their pastas are made in house and this one was delicious.

The restaurant itself is well laid-out with a very classy interior. Our server was amazing and attentive and described how the ordering process should work. He explained that instead of ordering a pasta dish OR a meat entrée, that a pasta dish should be shared as to experience a little of everything the chef offers. The executive chef Rochelle Daniel was recently on the Food Network and shows her skills in this modern Italian eatery. We started out with the Affettati Misti, their version of charcuterie if you will with Ox bread, prosciutto, calabrese, coppa and aged calabrian peorino. Along with gorgonzolo, cresenza, marinated olives, Calabrian butter and ox mostarda. It was outstanding. It was a tossup between that and the burrata as they have hand-pulled mozzeralla. Also, not on our order but will be on our next visit, was the tableside Caesar salad. They use gem lettuce, white bal-

20

Second course was the Alaskan halibut and the 25oz. dry-aged Prime porterhouse. Their meats are cooked in a local pecan wood-fired grill. The halibut was average. Cooked just right but nothing spectacular. The porterhouse was served sliced and a bit dry. If we had known it would be sliced, we would have requested otherwise. We did mention this to our server and he immediately went and told the chef as he said the chef never wants anyone to be disappointed. They also forgot our grilled asparagus but we assured him that was ok and we were more than satisfied with our meal and all his suggestions. Our server was extremely attentive and paid a great amount of attention to detail. But we did embark on a dessert of course and again so glad we went with his recommendation of the Meyer lemon tart. It was out of this world and the perfect ending to our dinner. Overall, we were pleased with the Fat Ox, albeit a few small glitches here and there but will absolutely return.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

Sandra Day O’Connor Institute Annual History Dinner with Lincoln Featuring Doris Kearns Goodwin What does the O’Connor Institute do with the money they raise? The funds raised go toward our programs to advance Civics Education and Civic Engagement. What makes your upcoming History Dinner different than other evening events?

Sue Glawe

The O’Connor Institute uniquely presents a majestic evening of education and enrichment to honor our democracy and leading figures in our nation’s history. What is one of your favorite programs at the O’Connor Institute? Gay Wray: Any dinner with Justice O’Connor Sue Glawe: Annual History Dinner If you could have dinner with any past U.S. President, who would it be and why? Gay Wray: Dwight D Eisenhower. He lived his life serving more years as a general than as President. He was a good friend of my father and spent many nights at our home. My bedroom was renamed the Eisenhower Room. Sue Glawe: Abraham Lincoln together with Justice O’Connor discussing civil discourse

Gay Wray

President Lincoln is reported to have had 5 favorite foods: apples, bacon, oysters, corn cakes and gingerbread men. Do you share any of these favorites with the President? Gay Wray: Bacon is one of my food groups Sue Glawe: Gingerbread but with whipped cream What is it that you admire most about President Lincoln? Gay Wray: Perseverance. Losing his children and almost losing his country, while remaining resolute Sue Glawe: Lincoln was the ultimate consensus builder And, last – but certainly not least … what impact has Justice Sandra Day O’Connor had on you? Gay Wray: There is not enough ink in this magazine to list everything. I have never met anyone like her and probably never will again. Sue Glawe: My acquaintance with the Justice began when I began working in the Arizona State Senate in 1973 and Justice O’Connor was elected by her colleagues as the first woman Senate Majority Leader not just in Arizona but the first in any state. I followed her career until I was called upon to assist with her confirmation process for Supreme Court in 1981. The impact she had on me at that time and so many others is that there was and still is a powerful role for women in leadership positions.

Funeral Hot Dish by Jana Bommersbach Reviewed by Bill Dougherty

It’s no secret that Jana Bommersbach is one of the most gifted and awarded writers in the state of Arizona. Her life as an investigative journalist has made her a true force on not only a local level, but as an internationally bestselling author as well. Her newest creation won’t disappoint. Set in Phoenix and a small town in North Dakota, reporter Joya Bonner is in hot pursuit of a juicy mafia story that is certain to be the scoop of her career. Yet before she knows it two worlds that could not be more different are about to collide and sweep her into a tornado of organized crime, Midwestern values, murder, revenge and violence. This novel is meticulously well written. But that should be no surprise to anyone familiar with Ms. Bommersbach’s writing style. All I could think of was famed police officer turned mystery writer Joseph Wambaugh when I was reading Funeral Hot Dish. However, once I finished this great book I realized that even Jana Bommersbach has eclipsed the great writer. You won’t be able to put it down.

Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly Reviewed by Bill Dougherty

Much has been written about World War II and the Holocaust. Much of it has been very historical and informative. Martha Hall Kelly brings forth in her historical novel Lilac Girls a combination of tragedy, heroism and grit. Set in 1939, the book parallels the lives of three women. Caroline is a wealthy socialite, Herta a German doctor and Kasia a Polish teenager. As the war breaks out in Europe, Kasia is shipped to a concentration camp where Herta has secured her place as a feared Nazi doctor. Caroline travels between the United States and France until it becomes too dangerous. The lives of these three ladies intertwine and come to a horrific climax toward the end of the novel, but we won’t spoil it for you. Lilac Girls is an exceptionally well-written book. Anyone interested in history or the effects of the war should read this book. Martha Hall Kelly’s effortless and breezy style of writing make a quick read for even the most distracted reader. Triumphant in text but tragic and heartbreaking, this is a great read.
