A well known socialite who obviously can’t control her temper has been permanently 86ed from a posh steak house. Her abusive behavior toward wait staffs and other customers became so bad that she was ejected from the restaurant. She also received a certified letter telling her that she was never to return. Innovations of Printmaking On view through April 25 at Phoenix Art Museum, Out of Print: Innovations of 19th- and 20th-Century Printmaking from the Collection of Phoenix Art Museum and the Schorr Collection showcases more than 50 works by some of the most revered names in art history, including Paul Cézanne, Edvard Munch, Louise Nevelson, Mary Cassatt, Robert Rauschenberg, and more. The exhibition places long-term loans from the U.K.-based Schorr Collection alongside prints from the Museum’s own American and European art collections to explore the modern evolution of printmaking from a 15thcentury method of mechanical reproduction to a 19th-century art form. “In the 1800s, avant-garde artists reclaimed the process of printmaking as they openly rejected academic, classical styles of painting,” said Rachel Sadvary Zebro, the Museum’s assistant curator who curated Out of Print. “By creating original printed designs with formal, distinctive qualities, these artists, building upon earlier generations, made printmaking into a legitimate form of art itself.” Out of Print also highlights work by contemporary

SOCIAL CRIMES ...

Remembering Anne Bass and the Roaring 80’s Divorce of the Century By Bill Dougherty Since all things-Covid began in early 2020, many have not paid attention to anything else. However, if you happened to be rich and famous you could not help but notice the death of former Texas and New York socialite Anne Bass. She died of ovarian cancer in April of last year at the age of 78. The former Mrs. Bass had stayed largely out of the limelight for the last several decades. Instead, she quietly retired to a sprawling farm in South Kent, Connecticut. But there is far more to this story then the passing of a once iconic socialite. Oil and Water Sid Bass made his vast oil fortune after being given his father’s company Bass Brothers which had been founded in the 1930s. The company controlled more than 100 oil fields. By the time the Yale and Stanford educated Sid took over from his father in 1968, Perry Bass’s heir apparent was close to making his father’s company a billion-dollar operation. He had married Anne Hendricks, a well-bred, Vassar educated clothing buyer and fashion editor several years prior. The couple quickly had two daughters and built their home in the family dynasty of Ft. Worth after making brief stops in Palo Alto and Dallas. It was in Ft. Worth in 1970 that they would move into the sprawling space-age Paul Rudolph designed mansion. The home would become perhaps one of the most dazzling post-war modern homes of the 20th century. It was often photographed by architects and home magazines alike. They truly showcased themselves to the world as the dream couple of the 1970s and 80s. But by 1986 there seemed to be water in the oil. Sid Bass Sid Bass was a second-generation Texan. He was kind to everyone, affable and very easy going. By the late 1970s, he was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with his wife’s high-profile reputation in Ft. Worth as well as New York; where Anne had made an even bigger presence. Sid was a man who did not even like wearing tuxedos much less attending charity balls. He was simple and down to earth, but he liked forceful women. He often told friends that he was disappointed that his family wealth had gone to his wife’s head. He preferred to remain in Ft. Worth, while Anne spent most of her time in New York. Mrs. Bass Anne Bass did not exactly have the best reputation in the social world. Though she was clearly at the top of the social heap, having opulent homes in Ft. Worth and Manhattan and more money than God, she had her share of detractors. Since she was clearly the richest socialite in both cities where she resided, she seldom took no for an answer. She was obsessed with the ballet in both Ft. Worth and New York. She spent time collecting fine works of art from the likes of Degas, Rothko, Picasso, and Calder. Her playground bully tactics earned her a very bad reputation. Anne could dismiss anyone with her steely pale blue eyes. She smoked almost 3 packs of cigarettes a day and was noted for the two plastic combs she wore on a constant basis in her blonde blunt-cut mane. Anne was quiet, unapproachable, and referred to by others in the social swim as “The Ice Queen.” Many have said she was not well-liked. The Persian Geisha Enter Mercedes Kellogg. She was not particularly attractive but her put-together polished appearance, quick wit and style made her the go-to guest at the most rarefied dinner parties

in New York. She was married to Francis Kellogg. They had met in the early 1970s in Switzerland, while she was an assistant to the UN in Lausanne, and married in Geneva. They seemed very happy and Mr. Kellogg adored his witty and vivacious wife, but she

wanted more and sensed that there was a better life for her once they settled in New York in the roaring 1980s. I Want to be Rich Mercedes saw the trappings of her new Fifth Avenue life early on. While she had a nice and comfortable life with the ambassador, she often told friends “I want to be rich.” After several brief encounters at Manhattan charity balls, Mercedes finally hooked her Bass. While the two flirted at the second party in the Hamptons, Mercedes lobbed a dinner roll at Sid’s head. He quickly scrolled her telephone number and thus began a clandestine affair. They thought they were safe at countless rendezvouses in New York and Paris until they were spotted at the Plaza Athenee. Then all hell broke loose! Up until that time, many in the rarefied circle said wives were safe. You never considered an affair with another man’s wife; you had a mistress. The affair shook the social world to its core and changed the way they had once moved.

Anne Bass 2018

Mercedes Bass 2020

The Divorce of the Century Anne Bass went for the jugular. She was awarded more than 200 million dollars. It stands as the highest settlement ever awarded in the state of Texas. She retained her futuristic home in Ft. Worth and her Park Avenue apartment. But she was quickly overshadowed by the new Mr. and Mrs. Bass. Most had sided with Sid since he had the money. However, there were some in the Anne camp too. John Fairchild, the publisher of Women’s Wear Daily, refused to address Mercedes Kellogg as Mercedes Bass even after the couple had been married for some time. Spy Magazine told readers that the only reason Sid Bass had married his second wife was because she obviously could perform weird Far East sex tricks. The Duchess of Windsor had also claimed to be able to do the same thing. The magazine adding that both women were beyond homely.

she encountered, even the help. She hosted at least two lunches a week in the couples’ New York Penthouse and gave a small fortune to homeless charities and the ballet. She continues to be a force of nature on the charity scene.

Afterwards Mercedes Bass would go on to be one of the most respected socialites in New York. People adored her. Like her second husband she was approachable and kind to everyone

Anne Bass passed away surrounded by her daughters and friends in April of 2020. Sid Bass was said to have paid for the lavish funeral and reception at the Ridglea Country Club in Ft. Worth. By this time, many had forgotten about Anne Bass. In her final years she had softened, and she never stopped supporting the charities she helped prop up, including The Ballet Center of Ft. Worth which survives today because of her generosity. She made her mark.

The magnificent FT. Worth home of Anne and Sid Bass built in 1970

Anne Bass would eventually leave New York and settle in Connecticut with her artist boyfriend Julian Lethbridge. It was there that the couple was subjected to a horrific and unfathomable weekend. The two were held hostage by their Romanian butler and injected with saline which he claimed was poison, in order to extort millions from Mrs. Bass. He was eventually sentenced to 20 years in prison. Much to the surprise of everyone in New York, Mercedes and Sid Bass quietly divorced in 2011. Sid simply told friends he no longer wanted to keep up with his second wife and that he was done going to charity events. He gave her their homes in New York, Aspen and Ft. Worth, an enormous settlement and then he disappeared.

However, if you are a commercial pilot that helped the gentleman with countless flight instructions, the obvious answer would be yes. That is exactly what Curtis Pierce said when his great friend and student Miguel asked him for the favor of a lifetime. It’s no secret that flying in the Americas is not that easy. My father took countless planes in his lifetime to Mexico and Central America. Nothing ever went smoothly. The Americas are vast continents. Many are not used to receiving private airplanes the way we do here in the United States. Most of the countries are not as developed as we are. You just do not see a lot of private planes on their various ramps. These countries are tedious. They require vast amounts of paperwork with official stamps for the most minute things imaginable. In the Americas, even the simple act of filing a flight plan, something done in the states to track your trip, is an ordeal. There are countless degrees of red tape and overly decorated uniformed government officials encountered daily. They must not only clear you to land in any given country but must also clear you to leave. That alone can edit or end your entire trip. Just one missing piece of paper or one missing stamp can

spell the end of your journey and the possible confiscation of your airplane. None of the above is an exaggeration. I have seen this all firsthand with my father. The two pilots’ amazing journey began on a sunny day in Scottsdale and would take them down the coast to Mexico and into Central America and finally South America. This book is very informative. It takes readers from start to finish about how FBOs (fixed base operations) work in the United States and how they differ throughout the rest of the world. It gives you a first-hand view from the flight deck of a four-seater Cessna aircraft. This is also a vast travelogue, rich with the traits and customs of each country. And of course, there is the everpresent radio call, “There is a problem with your paperwork, and you need to land immediately.” You get the picture.

Curtis and Miguel trying to figure out how to pack the essentials into a plane with a cabin about the size of a Toyota Camry.

Pacific on the Right is an excellent read. The book is filled with wit, humor and amazing facts about private pilots and the challenges they face here in the United States and the rest of the world. Anyone who has a sense of adventure or is interested in flying needs to read this book. It is that good! The book is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as the publisher’s online bookstore (https://store.bookbaby.com/book/pacificon-the-right). The Audible version has been a painfully slow process but should be available by late April.

TRENDY ETIQUETTE

Managing Invitations with Grace and Style By Heather Wagenhals Special occasions, fundraisers, family gatherings or informal activities are wonderful opportunities to celebrate existence. Here are guidelines to help navigate offering, accepting or declining invitations with aplomb. Making the invitation. Avoid asking about availability first. Offer the opportunity without assuming they’ll say yes, as they may not be interested in the activity. Receive rejection politely. Graciously accept the decline without interrogating them. You don’t need to know why, especially if you may be offended by the reason; however, you can let them know their presence will be missed. Be clear about costs. If you are paying their way, say so politely, “Would you like to attend the concert Tuesday, as my guest?” If there is a charge for attending and they must pay, you must be equally mindful, “I’m assembling a table for the luncheon on Saturday, tickets are $150 per person.” This avoids misunderstandings for you and the invitee can make a more informed decision. RSVP promptly. More important than ever with capacity restrictions still in place, let the host or organizer quickly know your intentions, or you may miss out. Decline with class. “We are honored by your invitation, but unfortunately cannot attend.” Avoid lengthy excuses for not attending, and no need to be overly effusive when you’re not interested. Instead, wish them success.

Guide to Rituals! By Patsy Lowry

“Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your Good is Better, and your Better is now your Best.” – Unknown “Star light, star bright! We’re going to have deviled eggs tonight!”

RITUALS:

When I was a little girl, my grandmother was my favorite friend. One day she asked me, “What is your favorite food?” I responded, “Deviled eggs.”

1. Every morning I bring my husband Ed his orange juice and I say, “It’s the Orange Juice Fairy.” I have been doing this daily for over 50 years.

When she passed away over forty years ago, I was heartbroken. I wanted to keep her memory alive in my heart so I committed to making “Grandmother’s deviled eggs” every time that I had company or am asked to bring food to a special occasion. I have made thousands of deviled eggs. Friends look forward to coming to our home to enjoy celebrating the memories of their Grandmother or Grandmother’s and mine. Deviled eggs and my grandmother are inseparable in my mind. Rituals are an important way of honoring your past, present and future. They are something that you do with a specific intention. MY GRANDMOTHER’S DEVILED EGGS RECIPE Hard boiled eggs Cut in half. Place eggs whites in a Ziplock bag and put in refrigerator. Mix egg yolks with 1/4 cup mayonnaise, 2t mustard, 2T Poppy Seed Dressing, Lowry’s garlic salt, curry powder, pepper to taste. Stir and put in a sealed container at least four hours before serving. Mix and fill egg whites not more than one hour before serving. Garnish with olives, capers, caviar, pimentos, cilantro.

38

2. When my husband Ed arrives home in the evening, I always greet him by saying, “Do I hear the friendly footsteps of My Conquering Hero?’ He always replies, “It is I.” 3. I keep lists of important people in my life and stay in touch with at least one of them every month. This maintains and strengthens friendships.

DESIGN AND STYLE

Understated Elegance in Paradise Valley By Christopher Coffin Rooms designed to exude elegance in a restrained and understated way will never go out of style. To achieve something graceful, tasteful and timeless was the goal for my clients who own a 6,000 sq. ft. Paradise Valley home that was in need of a makeover. There is a very fine line that can easily be crossed when trying to achieve an elegantly understated look. The house had so much potential with terrific “bones” architecturally, including the stunning Chicago Brick floors bringing warmth and texture to every room. But you might have missed the architecture walking into the kitchen in its original state. It was overwhelming with its cherry red and white checked tile backsplash and dark black countertops. We joked that it was décor perhaps inspired by a TGI Friday’s restaurant. It was such a departure from what the home really should be. The kitchen now is light and lovely and includes a hand-painted family crest above the doorway and a stunning gold range hood. We worked to give

40

presence to the terrific floors, stained the wood ceiling beams and added raised relief work on walls, ceilings and the fireplace The spaces needed to be formal but not stuffy or uncomfortable. It probably goes without saying that understated elegance means purchasing quality furnishings and selecting fine materials. We sourced lovely fabrics, including the luscious Italian Fortuny bedding and luxurious Hermes striped fabric for the bedroom bench. We also sourced antiques such as the Italian mirrors above nightstands and selected two different intricately detailed chandeliers to illuminate the dining table. We had pieces like the dining room’s marble topped iron console custom made. The classy look also comes from a uniform color palette. Color is a powerful tool which can help achieve overall esthetic goals. We found shades of a light, tasteful taupe and soft whites and added gold metallics as accent colors. Everything is warm, soft, muted - yet there are touches of sparkle. It has been said that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. This home was delightful to work on because the esthetic also reflects my personal taste and style decisions for my own home. Design trends come and go. The homeowners are pleased they have a home they can love and enjoy for years to come.

INTERIOR DESIGN FOR HOLISTIC LIVING

Surround Yourself with What You Love By Barbara Kaplan, www.BarbaraKaplan.com A friend of mine e-mailed me a George Carlin piece titled, “How to Stay Young.” In it he says, “Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, and hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.” At the end he adds, “Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” I was moved by that and couldn’t help but think how we have an opportunity to make this happen every day – surrounding ourselves with what we love. It’s in our home where this comes together and can be expressed. Once we decide what makes us happy, we can make it happen. It is the only place we have that kind of control. The things we allow into our homes, our most personal spaces, are intimate, healing and revealing. These are the possessions that speak to us consciously and unconsciously. This is one of the reasons you hear so much about de-cluttering, which allows us to breathe. So many of us live with items that have no meaning to us, yet we hold on to them for reasons we excuse. When I first meet my client’s they often tell me about their ideas of what they think they should do. My tendency is to ask if money were no object and nothing else had to be considered, what would you do? What is your ideal style of living? Many of us live someone else’s expression because we just haven’t taken the time and thought to find our own. This opens a whole new world. This change in thinking generally results in a different outcome. We hold ourselves back from what we really want because we think we can’t have it; however, when we talk it out, things change. This leads us into a new way of thinking – it gives us the opportunity to think outside the box. And when you do, amazing things can happen. As an example, a client came to me not knowing how she wanted her new home to be decorated. She was feeling overwhelmed by all the decisions she had to make, knowing she had to live with the outcome for a long time. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to live with. I encouraged her to only make decisions that were

42

essential to moving into the house and wait, even several months until she was ready to decide how to move forward. After all, her new environment would be filled with things she hadn’t experienced before. Next, we discussed the things she was sure about – the things that would satisfy her senses. I asked her: • What colors are you attracted to? Think about what you like and don’t like. • What furniture styles do you enjoy – traditional, retro, southwest, contemporary, etc.? • What type of wood do you prefer – light or dark color; light or heavy grain; laminate or lacquer? • What metals and finishes do you prefer – chrome, brass, copper. Shiny or matte? • What kind of window coverings, serve your needs? • What floor surfaces do you prefer – hard or soft? • What sounds are important to you – bubbling water from a fountain or music? • What variety of textures do you desire in fabrics? These are some of the details that help you feel your spirit in your home, your refuge. When you do, you’ll create an environment that takes your breath away. And remember to think holistically, because rooms have no feelings, YOU do! Now you can take my FREE Color & Design Preference Profile and find out your personal colors, design choices and style. CRAZY STUFFED BREADS

Two Men and a Gourmet Food Truck As if the smell of orange blossoms was not dreamy enough, CSB arrived with their rakish food truck and set the standard for all things mobile gourmet. We decided to invite a large group of people to sample the breads, main dishes and hor d’ oeuvres. It’s no secret that the two gentlemen who founded Crazy Stuffed Breads, John Gentile and Anthony Penna, know what they doing. Their combined talents in the upper echelon of culinary art have created not only their famed food truck but also one of the most sought-after catering companies in the Southwest. Starters We were lucky enough to sample the peppers and sausage medley. The peppers were slightly crispy and the sausage thinly sliced which created a flavor out of this world. The texture was perfect. We loved it! There was also a myriad of decadent salad choices with a tantalizing pesto balsamic vinegar dressing, too.

Stuffed Breads What can we say, amazing, crunchy soft and gooey on the inside these breads have earned their reputation. All are sharable Try the pepperoni bread. Then try the buffalo chicken and the Italian Special. But do not stop there. The pulled pork and vegetarian offerings are just as delectable. Do not forget to order a side of Italian meatballs. Even our resident Sicilian commented on their splendor. All these delectable sandwiches are served with homemade marinara sauce. Deserts Just when you thought you had little room for anything else the two gentlemen arrive with homemade Italian cannoli and chocolate cookies. If there are better cannolis somewhere else in the Valley, please let us know. These are probably the best you will ever sample!

Do Not Wait John Gentile and Anthony Penna have become hugely successful with their two-man operation. Their soft Eastern Seaboard accents transport you to Little Italy as soon as they arrive on the scene. Started in 2019 the two gentlemen bring more than 30 years of Epicuren talents right to you back yard. They also offer a highly successful private catering experience as well. For the last several years Crazy Stuffed Breads food truck has ranked at the highest level for not only their famed food truck but also their gourmet catering operation. We strongly suggest you book early as these two gentlemen are in very high demand on the party circuit. Do not let this food truck pass you by! You will not be sorry.
