10 La Dolce Vita 18 7 Questions for Dr. Stacie Stephenson Few, if any people, have the opportunity to meet and befriend their future father-inlaw long before they ever meet his daughter and end up marrying her. But in my case, that’s exactly what happened. My father-in law, Ham McRae, passed to the heavens late last month after a long and heartbreaking battle with dementia. In 1988, Sallie Brophy and Francis Najafi introduced me to Betty and Ham McRae. We hit it off immediately, but I didn’t really run across the McRaes until I moved to Phoenix permanently in 1990. To list Hamilton McRae’s accomplishments would take more paper than this publication could dream of having. He graduated top of his class in everything. He was a successful electrical engineer, military veteran, lawyer and land developer. He and his Republic Companies partner, Jay Stuckey, turned all they touched into gold. It was not uncommon for me to run into other business leaders at cocktail parties, club locker rooms and charity balls who would often say to me, “Ham McRae is the smartest man I’ve ever known.” His philanthropic work would eventually take him to the far corners of the globe, where he tried to find answers to world poverty. He would later put his findings in a published book on the subject. In the Valley, he and his wife Betty did everything imaginable to lend their talents and support to almost every charity small and large. Their impact in the community is still being felt today. Ham’s daredevil love for adventures would find him along with family members in amazing and life-changing situations throughout the world. During his life; he enjoyed scuba diving, sky diving, golfing, skiing and rock climbing. Ham had a great sense of humor. He also had a laugh that could blow like a cyclone across his native West Texas oil fields. One night, we were all at a private party where a security guard stood in the corner. Ham grabbed a handful of silverware off the buffet table, shoved it into my suit jacket pocket and pushed me in front of the security guard! At his memorial service someone said to me, “Ham McRae accomplished more than most people ever dream of doing in one life.” Maybe he knew somewhere in the back of his mind that he didn’t have much time and that he had to do as much as possible. It’s a crying shame that Ham McRae contracted dementia in his 60s. He still had so much to do and so many more jokes to tell. We must remember that our time here is limited. Therefore we must lead by his example. Ham McRae was a soft-spoken, good-natured and extremely kind gentleman. Truly a man among men. Heaven just received one of its brightest and wittiest angels ever.

Remembering ... Fred Unger By Bill Dougherty
When I heard of the passing of Scottsdale developer and philanthropist Fred Unger, I was surprised. He certainly was not old and he had always seemed the picture of health. But what I, like so many others, did not know was that Fred had been quietly battling cancer for the last seven years. The first time I was introduced to Fred, was shortly after I purchased Trends at the end of 2000. He told us of the great plans and vision he had in Old Town Scottsdale. Back then things in the world-famous shopping district had gotten a little sleepy. Fred had the idea of connecting Old Town with Scottsdale Fashion Square. Hence the name “Scottsdale Water Front.” Although he had his detractors, many still gun-shy over the failed roaring 80s Scottsdale Galleria project, anyone who knew Fred knew he could sell ice to Eskimos. The project was great and hugely successful. He believed in the staying power of our publication and took out a series of ads showcasing the project. You might remember that he had met with great success already with the remodel of the Royal Palms Resort, still the most exclusive property in Arizona, and the Hermosa Inn, another winner. Fred had the great vision to preserve and protect and at the same time look to the future with everything he did. Fred, together with his lovely wife Jenny, was very involved in Phoenix society. They lent their names, influence and support to many of the arts and charities. I’ll always remember how supportive the Ungers were the year our family chaired the Phoenix Symphony Ball. They could not do enough for us, yet they had already done so much for Trends and Trends Charitable Fund. Fred Unger will always be remembered as a gracious visionary, a true gentleman and the man with the beaming smile. His kindness and concern for his properties, tenants, friends and family will always be remembered by those fortunate enough to have had the pleasure to know him. We are blessed that he rejuvenated many properties and gave new life to areas that were attracting thin amounts of patrons. A man like Fred Unger comes around only once and we were blessed to have him. He will be missed.

Vincent’s lovely Southern belle wife Leevon was kind enough to include us. The Honorable Christophe Lemoine, Consul General of France, flew in from Los Angeles to pin the medal on the man who would become the first chef in Arizona to receive a Charles Beard Award. Here are just a few people who made the name-dropping guest list: Karen and Bob Hobbs, Andrea and Jerry Lewkowitz, Caryll and Jon Kyl, Nancy and Robert Spetzler, Sharon and Don Ulrich, Jimmy Walker, Laurie and Drew Brown and on and on and on. Vincent on Camelback was also recently named #25 in top restaurants of the world. Again are you surprised? Did you also know that Vincent’s Bistro is one of the hottest lunch spots to have a power lunch or to see and be seen? You might remember the days when Bistro 24 at the Ritz-Carlton Phoenix held that title. I always thought their food was gross. Now that the hotel is history, Vincent’s Bistro overflows daily and well it should. The food is to die for and so is the people watching. Since we happen to be on the subject of food, let’s talk about the Go Red For Women luncheon. We can’t stress just how important this luncheon is to our Valley and all the women who live here. This year Michelle Matiski and Garell Jordan chaired and did they do

a splendid job! The event which focuses on cardiovascular disease and stroke in women brought out everyone who matters. Our power table included: Trisha Anthony, Cay Cowie, Sallie Brophy, Christi Warner-Beyer and the above mentioned TCF board members. Speeches were kept to a minimum and there were informative videos, too. The Camelback Inn did a fantastic job with service and fare. We were delighted to be a sponsor again this year for this very worthy cause. I think Ms. Matiski and Ms. Jordan should advise others on how to not only sell out a ballroom, but facilitate a huge luncheon that ended at 1:25pm. American Valet did a fine job retrieving all those expensive autos too. It was a brilliant and very well done afternoon. In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: A home-wrecking socialite is back on the prowl. A couple you all know and don’t necessarily adore need to enroll in charm school. A man who fleeced many a beautiful lady was just arrested by the Karma Police. It’s time for a beautiful socialite to start dressing a little more age appropriate because sooner or later age catches up with all of us. A socialite who let’s just say embellished her background should learn to tell the truth instead. Now you’re all caught up until your next cocktail party.

The spectacular night was chaired by Ivy Ciolli, Chrissy Sayare and Erika Williams. Entertainers flew in from all over the globe to walk the red carpet and mix and mingle. The night featured a star-studded list of performers and they brought the house down! The gala also raised a tremendous amount of money in the fight against child abuse. Stephenson is Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) Chairman of Functional Medicine and a member of the Gateway for Cancer Research Board of Directors. She also has been a great supporter of other Phoenix charitable organizations, including Childhelp, as one of the event chairs of the 2017 Childhelp Drive the Dream Gala; Celebrity Fight Night Phoenix and the Phoenix Heart Ball. What is your connection to Arizona? My husband and I have a special affection for Arizona as he is the founder and chairman of CTCA, with a location at Western Regional Medical Center. We fell in love with the beauty of the Valley and the philanthropic passion of its people to support crucial causes. Can you tell us what motivated you to become so active in the Phoenix philanthropic circle? Actually; it is important to me to be involved in giving all over the world, particularly in the research of cancer and care of cancer patients. As part of the Phoenix philanthropic circle, I have the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for my personal quest to help revolutionize cancer research and treatments. Also, I am able to get involved in and support a number of charitable endeavors that are dear to the Phoenix community. What woman (past or present) is your awe-inspiring role model? The women who inspire me most are those rare, powerfully influential, brilliant women who pursue their life’s passions independent of gender roles, expectations or boundaries – and who have chosen self-expression and freedom in the pursuit of their vision. We know that you and your husband are a musical couple. Which genre of music best showcases your personality? I was brought up surrounded by classical music driven by my 16-year competitive career in figure skating and musical training in piano. It has been such a change for me to witness the evolution in figure skating to allow all forms of popular music in the Olympic

Arizona Humane Society What year did this luncheon start and who founded it? Compassion with Fashion was founded in 1999 by a trio of compassionate animal lovers – Betty, Beth and Stephanie McRae – who continue to support the Arizona Humane Society’s mission to this day. What is the primary purpose for the event? Compassion with Fashion is the Arizona Humane Society’s largest annual fundraiser and helps support the Valley’s homeless pets. Last year, Compassion with Fashion raised more than $900,000 – enough to help save the lives of 1,040 dogs, cats and critters. Where do the funds raised at the luncheon go? Funds raised at Compassion with Fashion help the Arizona Humane Society rescue, heal, adopt and advocate for sick, injured and abused pets. Over the past four years, AHS has saved the lives of 60,000 additional animals thanks to community support received through events like Compassion with Fashion. Is there a pet adoption at the luncheon? Of course! The Valley’s cutest adoptable dogs and cats will strut their stuff on the Compassion with Fashion runway in hopes of finding forever homes.
Is the Arizona Humane Society a no-kill facility? AHS developed an Ethical No-Kill Philosophy, meaning we never euthanize a pet for space or length of time. Because we care for the most vulnerable animals in the Valley – the sick, injured and abused, who are often turned away by other shelters, sometimes we must make the compassionate decision to euthanize an animal who is terminally ill, suffering from a severe medical condition or deemed too dangerous. In these instances, we are confident the typical pet owner would make the same decision. Staying true to our mission, we never turn away an animal that is suffering, sick or injured. For healthy pets, we schedule an appointment. And, we do our best to help people keep their pets by providing critical resources. Famed philanthropist, producer and photographer Bobby Sager received the prestigious Citizen of the World award for his tireless efforts to make America and the world a better place. Citizenship Counts was founded by celebrated bestselling author and humanitarian Gerda Weissmann Klein and her granddaughter Alysa Cooper. Their primary focus is to educate youth on the tenets of citizenship and inspire pride in our country. The exceptional evening was also emceed by Ted McConnell. 7 Questions for … Gerda Weissmann Klein By Bill Dougherty
What was your first reaction to the Nazi Occupation? My initial reaction was shock, sadness and disbelief as the Nazi flag hung from many of our neighbors’ homes. We could never have imagined how long the war would last and how devastating and destructive it would be. How many camps did you work in until the liberation? I worked in several camps from 1942 to 1944. I primarily worked in weaving looms. Some camps were decent and others were extremely bad. I will be forever indebted to Frau Kugler, a female German guard who saved my life. Did anything good come out of the camps? The caring, sharing and friendships that existed among the girls in camps helped brighten all of our days that were otherwise filled with sadness and horror. How did you end up immigrating to the United States? Nearly 4000 girls were sent on a 350-mile Death March. The conditions were extremely harsh as we marched through bitter, frigid temperatures in the winter. Many girls dropped dead and others were shot by the SS. Fewer than 120 girls remained and we were forced into an abandoned bicycle factory. The Nazis attached a time bomb to it and soon after it began to rain. The rain was so heavy that it prevented the bomb from detonating. The following morning on May 7, 1945, two American Army officers drove down a windy hill in a Jeep. The Jeep had the star of the American Army, no longer the despised swastika. One of the men, Lieutenant Kurt Klein, jumped out of the Jeep and asked me to show him around so he could see the other ladies, a form of address that was obviously foreign to us for the last several years. Then he held the door open for me. In that simple gesture, he restored me to humanity again. I fell in love with this incredibly handsome man and we were married in Paris the following summer. He brought me to the United States in 1946 and we settled in Buffalo, New York where he had family. I became a naturalized citizen in 1948. I love this country with a love that only someone who has been homeless and hungry as I have been can understand. In 2008, along with my granddaughter Alysa Ullman Cooper, I established a national 501(c)(3) educational organization called Citizenship Counts whose mission is to inspire pride in America. It is my greatest hope that other than my family, Citizenship Counts will be the legacy that I leave behind.
Why did you become an author and did you think you could write best-selling books? Survival is an incredible privilege, but also carries with it a deep obligation. On behalf of the millions whose voices were silenced, I knew that I had to record my memories so the world will never forget. I could have never imagined that my autobiography, All But My Life, would be published in countless languages and become the foundation for the 1996 Oscar and Emmy-award winning HBO documentary, One Survivor Remembers. Among my most cherished possessions is the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. When the White House called me to tell me that I would be receiving the award, I actually hung up on them. I thought that it had to be a joke. What 7 people, living or dead, would you invite to your dinner party? My late husband, mother, father and brother and Winston Churchill, because I owe him my life. What do you consider your finest hour? The births of my children and grandchildren are sacred days in my life. Also, owning a United States passport and becoming a proud citizen of this country are things I will forever cherish for the rest of my life. If you haven’t dined at The Lincoln, the steakhouse at the J.W. Marriott Camelback Inn, you are in for a treat. After a brief stint of various cuisines, the Chairman of the Board wanted to return it to a full-on steakhouse putting the emphasis primarily on steak; much like the previous B.L.T. Steakhouse. We had an amazing server, Sam, who was very attentive and accommodating. She offered her knowledge of some of her favorite menu items. We started with the shrimp cocktail which was ice cold, plump and delicious; followed by a precut wedge salad. They also serve delicious warm pop overs, which if you had dined at B.L.T. before, you will know what I am talking about. I ordered the Dover Sole which was a little disappointing. I would stick to the steaks because they use charcoal and cook their meat in a special oven/grill from Spain. The 22 oz. bone in ribeye was without a doubt one of the most flavorful and tender pieces of meat we have ever had. We ended up

splitting that and had goat cheese au gratin potatoes and grilled asparagus. The manager, David Kent, was outstanding and came to our table to speak with us and explain a little about their emphasis on detail. Now, on to dessert ... Sam recommended the peanut butter and jelly pie which we had never had. My husband is a chocolate lover but we decided to be adventurous and try the pie. I simply MUST say it was one of the best desserts I have ever had. I highly suggest getting this! If you like peanut butter and jelly you will love this pie! We were thrilled with The Lincoln and hope you will try it! We are already planning our next visit. Although written in 1999, The Season by Ronald Kessler is still one delicious read for those who participate in Valley philanthropy. Remember there are no signs that say “Palm Beach Next Right” or “Welcome to Palm Beach.” That’s precisely how everyone wants to keep it for those fortunate enough to live on the breathtaking barrier island in Southern Florida. Written by a former investigative reporter for both the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal, the book is rich with first-hand accounts of life among America’s richest and heavily guarded society. Few knew little about the elusive and exclusive enclave until JFK became president in 1961. A few years later, Lilly Pulitzer (the accidental fashion designer), put the town on the international fashion map with her colorful frocks and lifestyle lines. However, those are just a few of the nuances captured in this high society masterpiece. If you’ve never been to Palm Beach and sipped cocktails poolside at The Colony Hotel, you need to read this book. If you have indeed been, pick it up anyway. You won’t want to put it down. Like Phoenix, Palm Beach has a social season for just 7 months like us. Both cities are filled with scandal, sorted tales and wealth; but for some reason, Palm Beach stands alone. You have to read the book to find out why.

The State of Affairs by Ester Perel Reviewed by Bill Dougherty As relationship guru and bestselling author, Ester Perel says in her latest and New York Times bestselling book The State of Affairs, “people accept suicide more than they do infidelity.” This book is not a quantitative research book or a statistics piece. Instead Ms. Perel prefers to simply talk with people, often anonymously, about why they stray. She is also quick to point out that neither she nor her book condones infidelity. Rather than throw stones at those who have strayed, Ester Perel chose to ask several basic questions regarding the current state of infidelity in a relationship or marriage. Why did you choose to do it? Some do it all the time and some stray even when in happy and satisfying relationships. For these people, the act is often earth-shattering, non-recoverable and almost instantly grounds for divorce. This is a far cry from many of our international counterparts who simply turn the other cheek. This book is going to be a very touchy subject for most who have the nerve to purchase it. Ester Perel has suggested in countless interviews that the moment a spouse is found reading it that the other spouse immediately suspects infidelity. The book is a daring creation of a subject so touchy and off limits that even the most bookstore bound reader might quickly ditch the book’s cover. It serves as an excellent journey into the peaks and valleys of the human heart.
