From now on, you too can live in a real Jan Snel This is a special edition of our magazine. To start with, it is the tenth edition. If you do a quick calculation, you’ll see that we have already filled more than 500 pages (!) with articles, background pieces and, in particular, a great many amazing, inspiring projects. That’s great, of course, but rather than looking back, we’d like to look ahead with you. And so we come to the second reason why this magazine is not just the next JNSNL. You see, this is the edition in which we definitively announce our move into the housing market. Of course, we were already active in student housing (an understatement if you consider that we built the largest student housing complex in Europe), but the market for private houses is an entirely different segment. And it is precisely in this segment that striking developments are currently taking place. The most conspicuous of these is the explosive growth of small households. In the next twelve years, there will be an additional 500,000 to 750,000 oneand two-person households in the Netherlands. Housing associations are working on adapting their strategic housing stock in the light of this, because the available range of small, affordable rented houses is much too small. Project developers are also looking at the figures: in 2030, four out of ten households will consist of single persons. In order to satisfy their housing needs, a new way of building is needed. Flexible, fast, affordable and sustainable – and that’s precisely what we are good at! On pages 6 and 7, you can read more about our new, revolutionary housing concept, the Relax.snelwoning.nl. What we also want to emphasise here is that we are proud of the fact that the new house is more than 94% cradle-to-cradle. So we are proving once again that building flexibly is the sustainable way forward. And at Jan Snel, we are indeed going forward. One care less Huis in de Wei (ENA), Scherpenzeel The Huis in de Wei is the unusual name of a residential care facility in Scherpenzeel. During the thorough renovation, which takes about a year, the residents have to be housed somewhere else temporarily. Zorggroep (Healthcare group) ENA asked Jan Snel to realise a full-fledged residential care complex, consisting, among other things, of 37 care rooms, 6 office spaces, 2 living rooms and a large recreation room with a professional kitchen. The building covers more than 2,400 m2; we completed it within six weeks. One care less for Zorggroep ENA.

Akzo Nobel Fire Brigade station, Delfzijl
Anyone who still thinks in terms of temporary housing as regards building flexibly should just take a look at Chemiepark (Chemicals complex) Delfzijl. The site has its own fire brigade station, built by Jan Snel, which is intended to remain in use for at least 15 years. The fire station houses four crews of five people, various vehicles and support services such as the breathing apparatus workshop. Thanks to its favourable location, the fire station also accommodates the Security department. A multifunctional building, constructed in no time, ready for many years of intensive use.

CSA, Miele, Brisbane (AU) What once started with the construction of a trial operating theatre in our factory in Montfoort rapidly grew into a worldwide success. The mobile sterilisation unit – the so-called CSA – which we built for Miele Germany, has been of great value in various countries. Commissioned by Miele Germany, we recently built a modular CSA which, in the meantime, has been delivered and assembled ‘down under’ in Brisbane, Australia. This is by far and away our most distant project ever. Meanwhile, requests are regularly coming in from other parts of the world.

Textbook case School, Asse (B) A textbook case of educational accommodation 2.0. The new school building of the Gemeentelijke Basisschool Relegem (Municipal Primary School, Relegem – to the north-west of Brussels) was constructed lightning-fast and is now perfectly suitable for permanent use. The building consists of two storeys, with a total of six classrooms and two toilet areas. After careful preparation in Jan Snel’s workplace, the construction period on location amounted to just two (!) weeks.

Kloosterboer, Vlissingen Kloosterboer is a logistical services provider which specialises in conditioned food products. An excellent family company with more than 3,500,000 m2 of cooling and freezing capacity worldwide. At Kloosterboer, they know how to go about things, and that’s exactly why it clicks so well with Jan Snel. In Vlissingen, within a period of two weeks, we built a new canteen and changing rooms for Kloosterboer’s harbour staff. Signature on contract, constructed, delivered and finished. That’s what we like!

Ready for the future Covestro, Antwerpen (B) The former Bayer Antwerpen was established in 1961, being one of the first chemical companies in the port of Antwerp. Today the Antwerp site, with 850 employees, is part of Covestro. At the entrance to the grounds, Covestro wanted to expand its building with office spaces and a new porter’s lodge. Jan Snel realised the construction within six weeks, including the connection to the existing building. Heat pumps attend to sustainable energy provision and not only make the building suitable for permanent use, but also make it entirely future-proof.

Syntus, Montfoort, Mijdrecht, Bunnik and Amersfoort Yet another advantage of building flexibly: we can simply realise the same solution at multiple locations. For the transport company Syntus we built a starting location and office spaces for bus drivers, at four different locations. In Montfoort, Mijdrecht, Bunnik and Amersfoort, the construction progressed quickly and efficiently. And that was really necessary, too, because a judgement by the court was delayed for so long that Syntus was only able to issue the order two weeks before these constructions were to officially enter operation. No problem for Jan Snel, we do love a challenge.

Haagse Hogeschool, Delft 
 The Haagse Hogeschool is a large educational institution with nearly 26,000 students, divided among different establishments. In 2009, the Haagse Hogeschool opened an establishment for higher technical education on the campus of the TU (Technical University) Delft. Since there is a temporary need for rather more space, they sought contact with Jan Snel. We realised six classrooms and one technical space within four weeks. At any rate, it is expected that the building will be used for five years.

 Years ago, Middelstum was struck by the second heaviest earthquake ever to occur in the Netherlands (3.5 on the Richter scale). At the moment, the school buildings of the Municipality of Groningen are being reinforced, so that they are better resistant to possible future consequences of gas extraction. Commissioned by the NAM, Jan Snel realised the temporary accommodation for the primary school GBS Klim-op in Middelstum. We made this temporary building earthquake-resistant and delivered it complete, including access road, school yards and fencing. And we remodelled the nearby church precincts with a Kiss & Ride-zone, new paving and attractive greenery.

 For the Antwerp University Hospital, we constructed as many as 16 pre-operative consultation rooms and one SAS. The construction lasted approximately three months and involved several specific challenges, including the connection to the current building. The existing rooms remained operational during the activities, so good coordination with the hospital was crucial. This was very much the case, because the construction site lies near the entrance to the Casualty department. Good communication and timing were thus literally of vital importance.

Golf club offices, Cromvoirt On the instructions of the Cromvoirt Golf Club, and in collaboration with an architect, Jan Snel realised a luxuriouslyfinished office building. The two-storey building has been equipped with all conveniences and consists of various spaces, including eight offices, a conference room and sanitary provisions. The 288 m2 office building can justly be called a ‘hole-intwo’, because it was realised in a period of two weeks and will remain there for two years. On account of its high-quality finish, we used the Style unit.

Locks, Terneuzen 
 The locks complex at Terneuzen is the gateway to the harbours of Terneuzen and Ghent. Currently, work is busily being carried out on the preparation of a new lock. Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat (Department of Waterways and Public Works), Jan Snel realised various temporary accommodation facilities for users of the locks complex. This involves, among other things, four changing rooms, four installation rooms, two archive rooms, a training room, two office rooms, three storage rooms and two bedrooms. We paid extra attention to Rijkwaterstaat’s stringent safety requirements and delivered everything in an orderly manner within the planned four weeks.

From athlete management to brand activities and events, House of Sports brings together athletes, sports associations and the business world in a variety of ways. Jan Snel developed a luxurious ladies changing room that House of Sports can flexibly deploy at various events: the Fresh Important Person dressing room (FIP). The mobile room consists of one changing room with a toilet and four shower cubicles, and the interior is luxuriously furnished with, among other things, a Quooker, TV, WiFi and comfortable chairs. The premium quality appearance of the exterior rounds the unit off beautifully. The dressing room is simple to move and suitable to be installed at a different event every weekend.

Wasa Student Village, Amsterdam The Sloterdijk railway station is now primarily a hotel and office district. That’s going to change: In the coming months, Jan Snel is going to build Wasa Student Village here. The project consists of 358 houses, divided across seven blocks and four storeys. Together, they comprise a small student village. The building has a catering area, offices and launderette. It is expected that the project will be completed for the start of the new academic year (September 2017).

Money, money, money Rabobank, Heeg We emplace many cash dispensing kiosks for the Rabobank. We’ve been doing that for quite a few years, and we’re proud of that. This project too is worth highlighting for once. Therefore, we present this cash dispensing kiosk in Heeg (Friesland), with its attractive masonry facade. The construction time for a cash dispensing kiosk was exceptionally short, although naturally all security requirements were observed.

The challenge with the Sophianum in Gulpen lay in the terrain and the timing: we ‘simply’ completed the job during the school year. Hans Hupperetz, principal of the Sophianum, talks about his experiences. The Sophianum is a consortium of schools with intermediate preparatory vocational education (VMBO), intermediate general secondary education (MAVO), senior general secondary education (HAVO), pre-university education (Atheneum) and grammar school (Gymnasium), situated in the splendid Limburg Heuvelland. This is a school with a long history: in 1886 a girls’ school was started in the Klooster Bloemendaal in Vaals, which was later given the name Sophianum as a homage to the founder, saint Sophia Barat. In 1968 it became an ordinary regional school and, as a result of a number of mergers, the institute grew into a broad consortium of

Two people, one theme. In this section, two people shed light on one subject. This time we are talking with Edwin van Duivendijk, Jan Snel’s coordinator of HSE, quality and FPC, and Erik Boone, lead assessor of certifying authority DNV-GL, about improvement processes and certifications.
Edwin van Duivendijk “Jan Snel is conscious of and actively engaged in the improvement of processes in all sorts of areas. The primary purpose of this is to keep improving ourselves and to challenge ourselves. Also, we have to comply with the rules and legislation. At Jan Snel, we naturally set the bar high; in our eyes, to stand still is to regress. By actively engaging with the audits and certifications, you create a sort of cycle of improvement. DNV provides us with the certifications in accordance with ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO3834-3, EN-1090-1 and VCA. These are the certifications in the area of processes, environment, safety and CE. They are an independent party, but they are one with whom we have collaborated over a longer period. An audit report points out defects and possible improvements; but they are not concrete recommendations. But DNV does join in thinking with us: they look to see where there are leads. The contact is pleasant: they know us and know that we go into the audits

“I’ve been collaborating with Jan Snel for 6 years now. In those days, they were in Montfoort and Sas van Gent and the building in Hulst had just been built. In the first instance, I was there only for the ISO9001 and VCA certification. Last year, the ISO14001 followed. That latter certification already indicates that they like to go a step further and take quality control – in the environmental sphere, in this instance – seriously. The certifications of the ISO3834-3 and the EN-1090-1 fall outside my scope; for those, another auditor from DNV-GL has been appointed. To me, Jan Snel is an example of an organisation which sees the certifications as opportunities rather than obligations. An example of this is the accommodation in Hulst. For this, all the improvements from Montfoort were carried over into the building which was to be newly constructed in Hulst. A great deal of effort has been put into making it as efficient and safe a location as possible.
