‘Trends are like the weather. They are always evolving and the changes they bring are unstoppable’ - Nicky, founder Trendable

Hi there! Dutch Design Week, a week full of exploring and getting inspired. The coolhunters of Trendable went out and found some of the most beautiful concepts made by the most inspiring designers. After we went out we did what we do best: connecting all the coolhunts with each other and linking them to current trends. In this book we share the trends we saw at the Dutch Design Week. Instead of a trend book with a lot of information, you should see this as an inspiration book. There were so many interesting designs, but here we show just a small selection. One concept is not a trend, but a signal of a bigger movement. Every trend is explained through one or more coolhunts found on the Dutch Design Week. - Marieke, Content Manager

It’s ok to feel like shit What if it is oke to feel like shit for no reason at all and why are we supposed to keep everything bottled up for everyone?

Gates of mourning by Eun-Hae Kwon

10

Mourning, something you mostly do when you are alone and most preferably in silent. Gates of mourning is there to make mourning less concealed, more pervasive and familiar. This architectural model made for the cemetery is based on the 5 stages of mourning: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

Embrace Melancholy by Nel Verbeke Nowadays, everyone tries to achieve a state of constant happiness, Nel Verbeke, on the other hand, tries to shine a light on other, more reflective or melancholy states of being. She designed four objects with which she tries to let others experience these states in a different way in order to reach more emotional balance.

13

14

Disconnect to Reconnect We are always in touch with everyone, always updating how things are going, constantly on the go. Disconnecting from all of this and starting to really connect again with yourself, isn’t that much more important?

15

The Future Home by Desiree van der Gracht

16

Being in touch with our family and friends all the time might make it hard to really put all the communication ways aside and get in touch with yourself. Many people have trouble unwinding when they come home after a busy day of work or school. This breathing textile has a soothing effect on your mind and body. An airbag mimics a breathing pattern and there is ambient lighting integrated in the mohair and wool fabric.

New Luxury by Michael Petersen In a busy life where everything is constantly changing and on the move we sometimes need to just stop that and remind ourselves of how easy life can be. Instead of going to fancy hotels we choose to reconnect with ourselves in nature. ‘New Luxury is taking a step back from mass production society where we just produce to produce and start asking the question:” What is important to me?”.

19

Hyggelig by Mahafrin Rustomjee

20

In your home you need to be yourself and you need to feel like you belong there. Just take a moment to relax and capture the space you’re in. ‘Hyggelig is a light experience in your home that creates ‘Hygge’; an atmosphere of well-being, connection, warmth and a sense of belonging to a moment in your space, your home.’

22

Active Elderly The new generation seniors wants to live on their own as long as possible, but is that really possible?

23

24

Man’s Best Friend by Archibald Godts The senior citizens of nowadays are already different from previous generations. They want to stay connected to society and want to live on their own as long as possible. Although living by themselves is what they want, sometimes a little help is necessary and what better way than to get that help from ‘man’s best friend’.

25

26

Working Society What if there is an easy way to maintain our health while working long hours behind a laptop or at the office?

Posture by Jeffrey Heiligers ‘Sitting is the new smoking’ a phrase you have read so much about. Having to sit all day isn’t really much of a choice for the ones working in most offices. ‘Posture’ makes sure you sit or stand in the right way. If you have the wrong posture the seams will start to irritate, causing you to correct your position. By doing this you will reduce posture-related problems and you will train your muscles. The more you wear this, the less it is needed.

Lust Although we’re not always supposed to talk about lust, why not just give in and accept the fact that lust is part of being human?

31

Grandfather’s Clock by Bastiaan Buijs

32

Although sex toys are more accepted among women than they are among men, they are not always visually striking. Almost all the existing toys are the same colour, shape and material. This design combines sustainable materials with an authentic design; it can easily be exhibited in your house. The vibrator is a construction of mouth-blown glass in cloche form in which brass clockwork is integrated. Winding this by hand will make the cloche vibrate.

33

34

The Satyr by Bastiaan Buijs The Satyrs allows men to stand up for their lust. In the year 2015 even men should use toys to masturbate, it is just masturbation. This design puts the image of a man with the plastic blow up dolls in the past. A generous, organic looking torso on top of a vaulting horse; something you can’t just walk past by. ‘Bastiaan believes this object is fit both for indulging your lust and for showing the world that you are a physical, sexual being.’

35

36

Anti-Waste What if we would live in a world with no waste at all?

37

Bottle-Up by Hubert & Elisabeth van Doorne The waste produced by tourists on Zanzibar is a serious problem, a lot of glass ends up ruining the most beautiful nature. Six designers created a way to process this waste. With local craftsmen they designed a collection of products made of glass bottles. The income will help finance the next step: the development of construction materials made out of glass waste.

39

Cowtarium by Jos Klarenbeek

40

To open up the debate on mass production Jos Klarenbeek designed the Cowtarium. Like a planetarium is a scale model of planets, the cowtarium is a scale model of the mass production surrounding a cow. The Cowtarium can be found at the Veenhuizen’s brewery. The Cowtarium produces milk, butter, cheese meat and even bones. So while you are busy debating, enjoy a glass of fresh milk!

Stay Connected Living without your smartphone is almost unthinkable, but what if it becomes part of our body?

43

44

Hélo by Pieter Husmann We always have the need to check our phone when it beeps. Unfortunately the circumstances are not always right to do so. Pieter designed a 3D-printed wireless in-earphone. Each earphone is made from transparent rubber and features a single four-way switch. These buttons activate different functions. You can change the volume of your music, switch from your music to your email and receive a phone call while you’re at it. Hélo can be used while working out, driving or even at the office.

46

Nomadism Going from place to place without certainly knowing where you are going to, isn’t that the best way to explore?

47

To Many Places by Emmy Polkamp

48

This concept is actually connected to two trends, the nomad lifestyle we like to have and the way we have to deal with empty buildings. With this travelling hotel you can get the best of two worlds, you get to lay in a real comfortable bed but you also get the benefits of camping. ‘To many places’ is made to be set up in empty buildings and it can collaborate with culture festivals. It offers stage to local initiatives as well to make it a full experience for the guest.

Mosey Tea by Jie Chen Jie Chen brings us the long awaited tea set to go, called mosey tea. In order to bring back the tea tradition from her homeland China Chen designed a stackable tea set made of earth ware, protected in a leather shoulder bag. When you thought that was all, out comes the tea mat, which transforms any surface into a tea table.

52

Censorship Does everybody always have to know and see everything of you?

53

Spoofing Gears by Xue Jing Lim

54

These facial coverings show us different kind of ways to prevent being read by facial recognition systems. The appliances will make your facial features unrecognisable, they have been designed to cover, blur or distort your characteristics in various ways. The Spoofing Gears will give you your control back, nobody needs to have your facial features. With this you can choose what you want and do not want to share.

55

56

Sensory Fetishism Is it needed to re-activate our senses after looking at a screen for a long time?

57

58

Pas Perdus by Charlotte Jonckheer A carpet used to prickle the senses just by walking over it on bare feet, a concept by Charlotte Jonckheer. You can walk over it while waiting, making a phone call or when you are just thinking. It is made of different materials like horsehair, cotton, chenille and wool in various patterns and lengths. This carpet offers a healthy way to pass the time and ease the tension.
