“A ARTE DE VIVER” (THE ART OF LIVING) BY ROCHE BOBOIS AND JOANA VASCONCELOS Roche Bobois challenged the renowned Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos to reinterpret six pieces from their collection. Joana Vasconcelos recreated the models edited by Roche Bobois, preserving their original essence while inscribing her identity. Her unparalleled creativity, which highlights Portugal’s artisanal traditions and know-how, redefines the codes of contemporary art. The works will be exhibited in Miami as part of Art Basel and later auctioned. All proceeds will be donated to the Joana Vasconcelos Foundation, whose mission is to support those who make Art their path. By associating creative work, design and craftsmanship, this collaboration expresses the core values of Roche Bobois.

NIGHTBLOOM COLLECTION BY MARCEL WANDERS AND LLADRÓ Marcel Wanders is already famous for his collaborative design. We have seen works with Alessi, FLOS and, most recently, Lladró. Together with his Creative Director, Gabriel Chiave, Wanders ultimately produced a collection of pendants, wall sconces and a floor lamp named Nightbloom, in which a medium as rigid as porcelain was used to communicate motion through design. This beautiful lighting collection is inspired by flowers swaying gently in the breeze. An original, modern design notable for its shifting organic forms and for the attractive effects created by the light that comes from inside.
NEWS & TRENDS //
ARATA ISOZAKI | THE PRITZKER ARCHITECTURE PRIZE 2019 LAUREATE Arata Isozaki, a distinguished Japanese architect, city planner and theorist, has been selected as the 2019 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the award that is known internationally as architecture’s highest honour. Lauded as a visionary amongst his international contemporaries, Isozaki’s forwardthinking approach, deep commitment to the “art of space,” and transnational methodology have been evidenced since the 1960s. The prolific architect has been credited with facilitating dialogue between East and West, reinterpreting global influences within architecture, and supporting the development of younger generations in the field. His precision and dexterity are demonstrated through his mastery of an intercontinental range of building techniques, interpretation of site and context, and intentionality of details. Isozaki’s early successes in architecture transpired during the era following the Allied occupation of Japan, when the country sought to rebuild itself after the ruins of the Second World War. His buildings appear geometrically simple, but are infused with theory and purpose. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1981-1986 Los Angeles, United States) was the architect’s first international commission. Though controversial and geographically challenging, the red Indian sandstone building was resolved by Isozaki’s eloquent awareness of scale through an assemblage of volumes, while employing the golden ratio and yin yang theory throughout, evoking the complementary nature of western and eastern relationships.

in Oviedo, Spain and studied architecture in Madrid before graduating

from the Milan Politecnico in 1989. She is one of the most coveted
honour to be displayed in a museum, her real museums are the
interior designers in the world, with her work revolving around rigour
client’s houses. “We are related to normal life, we are related to the

idea of production”, she says. But she also has the consciousness that

of Salone del Mobile. After finishing her studies in Milan, Urquiola had the privilege of being mentored by the great masters of Italian industrial design, Achille Castiglioni and Vico Magistretti, from whom she learned crucial life lessons. Even though they were two very different people, both were essential in the way they were living and doing, according to the designer. It was from Magistretti that the designer learned that “you always divide your work with others, with the company, with the artisans and the industrials”, whilst Castiglioni taught her that the fundamental element of a project is its concept. “That’s in your hand and you have to drive it until the end”, said Urquiola.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW //
“We have to think about not only the way the we buy things, but the way we eat and dress, the way we breathe, the way we do and move. There’s a lot of homework to do. I think there’s a very strong chance of paradigm, we have to work with our sons and grandsons to change.” The designer had the amazing honour of receiving several international awards, including medals given by the Spanish Government and Monarchy, however, Urquiola expresses that the real honours of her career are the bad moments, because that’s what makes her grow as a professional.
“People ask me if I feel more Spanish or Italian after over than 30 years here, but I think that I am 100% Spanish and 100% Italian, and in the end there’s just one.”

the ‘Ro Plastic Prize’ and the ‘Guiltless Plastic’ project, both raising awareness to sustainability. CovetED had the pleasure of catching up with Rossana Orlandi at her gallery to learn more about these incredible initiatives. After working in the fashion world for over 20 years, Rossana Orlandi took the risk of changing her path and started a career in design. When she decided to open her gallery in 2002, she was just “buying stupid things” to fill up the space. But it all changed when she discovered Sebastian Wrong, the designer of ‘Spun Light’, produced by Flos. The gallery’s first installation had an enormous success thanks to the support of friends, design magazines and schools. “It has been super exciting since the beginning, because designers started welcoming me with an enormous passion”, says Rossana. “I call my space “the all
“I think we absolutely have to reuse and think of other ways to deal with plastic”, stated Rossana. During Milan Design Week 2019, the main attraction of the gallery was the ‘Ro Plastic Prize’, created by Rossana to inspire the design community. The prize collected over 300 applications from 50 different countries, despite its short application period. Its focus was to raise awareness about plastic reduction since, according to Rossana, “plastic is misused and abused”. This is just one more step towards Rossana’s dream of a world of conscious design.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH PIERO LISSONI
In 1986, Italian designer and architect Piero Lissoni established himself as a household name in the industry by founding his studio, Lissoni Associati, along with Nicoletta Canesi. His studio focuses on architecture, interior and product design, with an extensive list of hospitality projects. CovetED had the pleasure of sitting down with the designer during Salone del Mobile 2019, at Knoll’s stand, to learn more about the designer’s relationship with the incredible brand. Lissoni is a very versatile professional, with his portfolio stretching across architecture, furniture, interiors and even graphic design. According to the designer, “it’s a tradition in Milan to be versatile”. This is also a result of his education at the Politecnico di Milano, where he was taught to take on everything. The designer has a very simplistic approach to his career, living day by day. Always eager of the discovery of something new, Lissoni doesn’t disclose any new expectations for the future. “I never expect to do something. I’m very lucky but I also work a lot. You need to be a worker, that’s the secret. And you need a bit of luck”, he says.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW // During his creative process, the designer prefers to be completely inside of it, meaning it is a long discussion with a team of workers, that sometimes takes years to complete. Regarding his collaboration with Knoll, they have been working together for over 15 years, so it has become some kind of “love affair”, as the designer described it. Lissoni has been in love with the company since the beginning, so it has remained a positive and thriving relationship.
“For me, it is impossible to do anything if I don’t like the people. I need people, I don’t need a name or a brand. It’s all about the people.”
When it comes to the future of craftsmanship, the designer states that it will be a combination of incredible craftsmen and amazing technology, considering that’s the secret of the Italian life of design. Lissoni thinks that the fundamental thing for the designers of tomorrow is the respect of traditions and their cultures, adding that they must know their history in order to improve it.
“You need to offer a long life to your products because that’s the best way of saving resources. We need to be more responsible, purer and cleaner.”

Blue Heaven Portugal is an amazing option, it offers jets, private jets, helicopters, yachts and luxurious limousine rides throughout the country. Lisbon is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway: it’s a city with cultural diversity, passion and that will certainly conquer your heart with the most perfect mix between the old-fashioned and modern daily life. Nowadays, Lisbon is at the same level as other great European capitals, like London or Paris. There’s plenty of history on every street. Manueline art, tiles and fado are unique expressions and genuine symbols of Portuguese culture but also a contribution to World Heritage. There are 24 classifications by UNESCO in Portugal, including monuments, landscapes and intangible heritage. Lisbon is the land of arts. In Lisbon, you can find ceramics, the typical Portuguese azulejo and even Murano glass in the Emmanuel Babled showroom, located in the heart of the Portuguese capital. To enjoy Lisbon to the fullest you just need two good days. It’s enough to get to know the heart of the city, the São Jorge Castle and the traditional neighbourhoods of Alfama and Bairro Alto. The best drinks are at Cais do Sodré and we can’t forget about the food: Belém is the house of Pastéis de Belém and, for that reason only, a mandatory visit when in Lisbon. The Four Seasons Hotel Ritz is the perfect place to stay. Located in the heart of Lisbon, this amazing hotel wears the cultural heart and soul of Portugal on its sleeve. It features unique features, from her innovative engineering and design to the three completely ostentatious swimming pools that create currents. Modern and sophisticated design featuring an excellent use of space and wood furnishings, this structural design has many benefits, including waveless cruising. With both the exterior and interior designed by Philippe Starck, it cost around 300 million dollars, being an homage to contemporary design.

A+ / Topaz designed by Tim Heywood The 482 ft (147m) long vessel, costing an estimated 400 million dollars, was built by the renowned German shipbuilding company Lürssen and was designed by the multi-award winner yacht designer Tim Heywood. This water superstructure is designed to accommodate up to 62 guests, featuring a steel displacement hull, an aluminum superstructure and eight decks. Launched in 2012, it’s interior design was created by Terence Disdale Design, a studio based in the UK. The details of its interior have not been disclosed, but it is known that Disdale’s inspiration was a beach house-style decor. The eight decks are connected by a lift that provides access to the helicopter and swimming platforms, a gym, swimming pool, two jacuzzis, a conference room, movie theatre and two helipads.

The History Supreme designed by Stuart Hughes As the world’s most unique yacht and probably one of the most expensive (valued at 3 billion dollars), Stuart Hughes, a UK-based designer, sold this gem to an anonymous leading Malaysian businessman. The 100 ft (30m) may be small compared to the other yacht on this list, but it’s incredibly huge in value with all its jewels, platinum, and gold. The yacht is covered in around 100 000 kg of gold and platinum, added to convey uniqueness to the project. All features including the deck, dining area, rails, anchor are made from precious metals too and the base of the vessel is also wrapped in gold.
Unique Circle designed by Zaha Hadid Blohm + Voss collaborated with one of the most remarkable architect studios in the entire world: Zaha Hadid. This contemporary take on superyacht concepts delivered a prototype for a 420 ft (128m) yacht. The design inspiration is taken from fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems, with hydrodynamic research shaping the design of the hull. The exoskeleton connects the various levels and decks of the ship seamlessly through expressive diagonals. The clean white contemporary interiors were also inspired by the ocean’s fluid form. It’s still unknown if and when the Zaha Hadid-designed superyachts will be built, but it’s still a unique project that addresses the practical challenges of designing a yacht while remaining true to the strong unique design language of the master prototype.

Curated by Andrew Bolton, the Head Curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, this year’s Met Gala exhibition explores the impact of Camp on fashion, taking inspiration from Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp.’”. The exhibition opened to the public on May 9, 2019 and runs until September 8, 2019.

TRENDBOOK // WHAT IS CAMP?
Though Susan Sontag took camp mainstream in her essay, the concept originally stems from queer culture and dates back to the 17th century. Still, the art of camp remains hard to define to this day. Extravagant. Flamboyant. Subversive. Kitschy are some of the adjectives used to describe camp fashion. In the essay, Sontag defines camp as a “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” “The whole point of Camp is to dethrone the serious. Camp is playful, antiserious” she explained.
For Andrew Bolton, chief curator for the Costume Institute, just asking the question “What is camp?” is the point. Although usually associated with LGBT culture, the word camp describes anything that is intentionally ostentatious or excessively effeminate. “This exhibition might raise more questions than it answers: ‘Is camp gay?’, ‘Is camp political?’ and, ultimately, ‘What is camp?’,” reads a statement from The Met. “We’re experiencing a resurgence of camp not only in fashion, but in culture in general” Andrew Bolton says “Camp tends to come during times of cultural instability.” “Camp’s disruptive nature and subversion of modern aesthetic values has often been trivialized, but this exhibition reveals that it has had a profound influence on both high art and popular culture,” said Max Hollein, Director of The Met. Camp is also pretty subjective. What one person interprets as camp might not translate that way to someone else. The scholar Fabio Cleto says that ‘Camp is a question mark that won’t let its line be straightened up into an exclamation mark.’ I want people to leave thinking, ‘What is camp?’ That is the power and the poetry behind camp, constantly trying to define it.”
COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 109.
THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition features colourful spaces, all in vivid shades of pink, blue and yellow. Glass windows display objects from The Met’s collection and features approximately 250 objects, including womenswear and menswear, as well as sculptures, paintings and drawings dating from the 17th century to the present.
There are two distinct parts of the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” exhibit. The first, focuses on the origins of camp from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The second shows how elements of camp -- including humour, irony and parody -- have been expressed in fashion. Pieces from designers like Balenciaga, Jean Paul Gaultier and Jeremy Scott are on display, along with notable red carpet looks like Cardi B’s oyster 2019 Grammy dress and Bjork’s swan dress she wore to the 2001 Academy Awards. “Camp: Notes on Fashion” exhibit is an exploration of how over-the-top fashion has been used as both a form of expression and escapism throughout history. It is both a way of seeing the world as an aesthetic phenomenon and a quality present in objects, people, buildings, clothes, furniture and cultural products such as movies, pop songs and novels. In the latter case, they are works that value style over content.
