To the Bear River Valley Community The winter of 2016-17 is one that we will all remember. Snowstorm after snowstorm hit the valley with multiple feet of snow accumulating on our streets, fields, and lawns. It was a total community effort to clear our driveways of the snow just enough to park and drive our vehicles. The kids would walk to the bus stop in what seemed like long snowy hallways down the sidewalks. That is, if they had school. Two days of school were cancelled due to snowy conditions and cold temperatures. Once there was no more place to put snow, the warmer temperatures arrived, and that snow quickly turned into running water. This is when the GREAT community we lived in really shined. People helping people. There was a huge need for thousands of sandbags to be filled and placed in a short amount of time. Pumps were being brought to places that never needed them before. Box Elder County, and all of the municipalities offered facilities and equipment to help control the flows of water. All of our local church groups did what they could to find out who was affected, and sent people and resources to their aid. Individuals offered food and manpower to neighbors, friends and strangers. Even with all of the help, there was millions of dollars in property damage. Our thoughts are with those who were affected, and we would like to thank everyone who helped in any way that they could. We truly do live in a wonderful area where we know our neighbors and we care about each other. As the seasons change, and we are able to get outside and enjoy the spring and summer weather, take a look through this guide and mark your calendars with the programs that you and your family would like to attend. We strive to offer programs and activities for the whole community, whatever age you are. If we aren’t offering a program or event that you would like to see, please contact Marc Christensen at the 435-257-9486 or mchristensen@tremontoncity.com and we can help get new programs offered. We look forward to seeing you in the parks!

SERVICE AWARD VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD Roger Williams Roger has lived in Tremonton for 38 years. He has been married to his wife for forty years and loves spending time with his family. Roger also enjoys working with the youth of the community and said “I love getting to know the kids and getting to teach them about sportsmanship. I try to be a good role model for them so they know that I am there for them as a coach and as a friend.” He also said that he loves to be a part of their lives because he gets to see them grow up and become fine young people. Roger started out coaching his own kids when they were young in basketball and in football. He now coaches his two grandsons in basketball. His oldest Jordon who is 16 and also Tanner who is ten years old. Roger wanted to coach because he said that we enjoys team building and being able to have put some structure in the youths lives. He loves teaching them the basics of sports and also letting them know that they can have fun while they are doing it. “Sports can teach kids a lot of lessons and can carry kids throughout their life.”After fighting cancer two years ago Roger is a big supporter of loving life and living it to the fullest. He loves getting to be a part of the community’s lives and he really enjoys coaching the kids. At the root of it Roger just really hopes that the kids had a good time a learned a little while they were playing. “I hope I have touched their lives by being a good coach and a good role model. I will always remember them and I hope they will remember me.”Thank you Roger! The service you offer and time you give to the youth of this community is noticed and appreciated.

WANT TO VOLUNTEER? Tremonton Parks and Recreation is looking for people who are passionate in sports and are looking to make a difference in people’s lives. We are always looking for volunteers, program instructors and staff members to serve the community. We are accepting applications for site supervisors, scorekeepers and officials for the upcoming basketball, spring soccer and volleyball seasons in Tremonton City. If you have experience with these sports please apply. If you would like to add a program to the community, we would love to hear your ideas. We would like to add Arts programs to what we are currently offering.

Memorial Day, which was originally called Decoration Day because it was a day on which the graves of fallen soldiers were decorated, was established in the years after the Civil War to honor those who died in that war. Today, it is a day of remembrance of all who have died in this country’s service. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.
