Brace for car rental rate hikes of up to 5% in Canada and the U.S., but prices should stabilize heading into 2024: Amex GBT report

TORONTO — Airplanes, hotels, trains, cruise ships - all evoke the excitement of travel.

Rental cars? Not so much.

But as many travellers found out these past few years, ‘you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone’, and that’s as true for booking rental cars as it is for anything else.

Rental cars are indispensable for many travellers, both corporate and leisure. And unlike airfares on a long list of competing airlines, or a room in a hotel down the block, alternatives are few when it comes to car rentals in an already highly consolidated sector.

Coming into the pandemic, the rental car sector was already working hard to keep up with demand amid tightening supply lines. The semi-conductor shortage was impacting the production of new cars and that has a knock-on effect for rental car inventory.

Couple that with the pandemic’s supply shortages worldwide, and by 2021 there were reports of desperate travellers unable to book rental cars who were securing moving vans instead, just to get a vehicle.

Now it’s 2023 and travel bookings are soaring, with no end in sight to the pent-up demand. The industry is well aware of rising prices for airfares and more. What about rental cars?

On the heels of American Express Global Business Travel’s just-released Ground Monitor 2023-2024 reportwhich looks at, among other things, the rental car sector - Travelweek connected with Sesilia Kalss and Mark Biscardi, both Senior Consulting Managers with Amex GBT Global Business Consulting, for their feedback and insights on what the industry can expect this year and next.

Travelweek: Amex GBT’s Ground Monitor 2023-2024 indicates a potential 5% rate climb for rental cars in Canada and the U.S. As much as travellers don’t want to pay higher prices, they may just be happy to secure a rental after the past couple of years of shortages! How did Amex GBT navigate the vehicle supply shortage over the past few years? Kalss: “Amex GBT supported clients by providing greater choices. To those most impacted, we recommended they open up the online booking tool (OBT) to more suppliers to widen availability. We have competitive rates with key rental car partners to ensure clients can secure good rates, even in times of limited supply.

“The vehicle shortage was mainly impacting small to midsize cars, unfortunately the classes with the highest demand. Bigger and premium cars were less impacted, but naturally higher in costs. Our recommendation was to: consolidate demand where

possible; bundle trips when possible as having more than one employee in a car could justify the higher costs; review rideshare policies; and look to rail or public transit where viable.”

Travelweek: Looking ahead, how does car rental availability look for the rest of 2023 and into 2024? The report indicates that North America commands 52% of the global rental car market.

Biscardi: “In North America the supply is getting much better these days, however leisure travel, being as strong as it is this summer, will put a strain on the market. But overall, we’ve seen improvements with car suppliers adding to their fleet and getting back up to pre-pandemic levels.”

Travelweek: As Amex GBT’s report notes, the two key sectors of the travel industry, leisure and corporate, are vying for the same limited supply of vehicles. And that the limited supply is particularly acute in destinations that cater to both leisure and corporate travellers. Where is the situation most challenging?

Kalss: “Typical leisure destinations such as south of France, Italy, German northern coast, and any international airport could face limited supply, especially when cars are not returned in time. Other circumstances, such as public transport strikes or flight cancellations, further increase the pressure.”

Biscardi: “In the U.S., the most frequent destinations for corporate and leisure travel are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Florida, Phoenix, New York, Detroit, Seattle, Philadelphia, and Chicago.”

Travelweek: In the highest-demand destinations, what sort of price increase could travellers see?

Kalss: “The answer depends on what you compare the data with – i.e. last year, or two to three years back. It could go up more than 20% if a business didn’t have to change contract terms and rates over the past several years. The same is true for countries with high inflation rates, such as Turkey. The UK is also showing higher car prices than ever, resulting in increased daily rental rates.

“We also observed significantly higher costs for services – mainly delivery and collection services, as well as costs for drivers and gasoline. This impacts service fees, as you need two drivers to deliver or collect a vehicle outside the rental station. As well, WLTP Fees (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure) went up as suppliers consider the higher costs for mandatory measures of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from passenger cars in their fleet.”

Biscardi: “In the U.S., travellers can expect to see car rental price increases between 5% to 7%. In Canada, the top destinations, Montreal and Toronto, are expected to see rates rise by 6%. This is in line with the country average of 6% to 7% increases.”

Amex GBT’s Ground Monitor 20232024 report also looks at client interest in electric vehicle rentals (‘EVs go mainstream, but drivers remain wary’), generational differences in rental car demand, and much more. ACTA ramps up advocacy for pandemic loan relief

TORONTO — A new survey from ACTA aims to assess the capacity of travel agencies, host agencies and independent travel agents to repay CEBA, RRRF and HASCAP loans. A link to the survey can be found at ACTA.ca.

The survey will also give ACTA a sense of the debt level travel retailers are currently dealing with, and their confidence in their capacity to repay government loans by Dec. 31, 2023.

The Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA), Regional Relief and Recovery Fund (RRRF), and Highly Affected Sectors Credit Availability Program (HASCAP) are the focus of the survey.

As ACTA President Wendy Paradis notes, travel and tourism businesses accessed these federal loan programs en masse during the pandemic, however tight repayment terms are now proving to impede travel business recovery across Canada.

The survey is open to all travel agencies, host agencies, and independent travel agents.

“We are also seeking information on preferred solutions for repayment, including increased loan forgiveness, extended repayment deadlines, and modification of loan terms,” said Paradis.

She adds that HASCAP loan repayment dates vary depending on the terms individual travel

businesses would have established with their lending institution. The loans were made available to businesses during the pandemic by Canadian lending institutions and are 100% guaranteed by the Canadian government.

“Our members and the travel industry as a whole continue to experience a very slow pace of financial recovery due to pandemic debt incurred. Escalating operational costs and unpredictable inflation are also a significant additional burden and making it impossible to repay federal loans by the current deadline,” said Paradis.

“We believe that with the first two financial quarters of 2023 now behind them, travel agencies, host agencies, and Independent Travel Advisors have timely data and perspective to share with respect to their debt levels, confidence in their ability to repay the federal loans, and preferred public policy solutions to assist their recovery,” she added.

ACTA will aggregate the responses, and no individual travel businesses will be referenced. The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, July 28 by 3 p.m. EST (12 p.m. PST).

COFFEE CULTURE AT ITS FINEST

Coffee aficionados will rejoice thanks to the numerous one-of-a-kind coffeehouses that share a place in Viennese history. For locals, it’s about more than just the coffee.

Among the many well-known Viennese coffeehouses is the Gerstner, a family coffee house established in 1847.

Spread over an impressive three-storey building with beautiful opulent parlour rooms, it’s a perfect setting to duck into, sip a melange (similar to a caffè latte) and enjoy a slice of Vienna’s celebrated three-layered chocolate cake, Sachertorte.

While Vienna may not initially spring to mind when you think of wineries, it’s actually the only city in the world where vineyards flourish within the city’s borders.

An excursion to the tradition-steeped Mayer am Pfarrplatz winery is a heuriger with a remarkable past; it was where Ludwig van Beethoven once lived.

ON A MUSICAL NOTE

Undoubtedly, Vienna will forever be linked to music.

For over 250 years, it’s celebrated and enjoyed its reputation as the world’s City of Music and no wonder. Europe’s greatest composers, including Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Strauss, lived and worked in Vienna.

The Caribbean Tourism Organization has appointed Dona Regis-Prosper as its new Secretary-General and CEO. With her new appointment set to take effect Sept. 1, 2023, Regis-Prosper, who hails from St. Lucia, will make history as the first woman to assume leadership of the CTO. In her 22+ year travel industry career, Regis-Prosper has worked for multiple Caribbean organizations, including the St. Lucia Air and Seaports Authority, Margaritaville Caribbean Group in Jamaica, Tortola Pier Park in the BVI and the Antigua Cruise Port. Regis-Prosper takes over the organization’s leadership reins from Acting Secretary General and CEO Neil Walters, CTO’s Director of Finance and Resource Management, who has been filling the position following the retirement of Hugh Riley in 2019.

Bruce Poon Tip, who founded G Adventures 33 years ago, has been honoured as an Officer of the Order of Canada, making him the first person in the industry to receive the title in 34 years. Poon Tip says being invested into the Order of Canada is the most humbling honour he could receive, especially as an immigrant to Canada at such a young age. “Canada has afforded me the gift of opportunity,” he said. “This great nation took my family and I in, and has given me the privilege and means to build a business. It’s enabled me to make my ideas become a reality – creating a community that is based on giving back to others – both nationally and internationally. I accept this recognition with great pride on behalf of myself and my family.”

AIRPORTS

Mexico’s armed forces are taking control of Mexico City’s main airport (MEX), and the government plans to give the military control of nearly a dozen more across the country as the president takes aim at corruption and mismanagement. The navy took charge of security at Mexico City International Airport, or Benito Juarez, more than a year ago. It will soon have control of everything else, from customs and immigration to handling luggage. Lopez Obrador has already said that he plans to have a dozen airports in the hands of the army or navy by the end of his administration in 2024. And by the end of this year, the military is scheduled to begin operating its own commercial airline.

New York Democrat Rep. Brian Higgins says Customs and Border Protection personnel are being temporarily reassigned to help fortify the U.S. border with Mexico, and that’s resulting in a shortage of agents on the southern side of the Canada-U.S. border. Higgins says as a result,

busy points of entry along the Canada-U.S. border are seeing longer delays and unstaffed kiosks. He says that’s despite the fact that cross-border traffic between Ontario and New York is still only about 85% of what it was before the COVID-19 pandemic. Republicans are also worried and several wrote to CBP last month to request details about staffing levels amid fears that illegal crossings are on the rise.

POLICIES

Barbados has reduced its airport service charge from US$35 to US$20. The reduction will be in place until Dec. 14, 2023. Barbados’ Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill, indicated that the six-month reduction is intended to stimulate inter-regional travel to Barbados. The Ministry has also been working with regional airlines, such as Air Antilles and interCaribbean, to increase the number of weekly flights to the island.

First look at Sunwing’s 2023-2024 winter program, with capacity up 15%

TORONTO — Sunwing has released the first details of its 2023-2024 winter schedule, featuring flights onboard Sunwing Airlines from 23 Canadian airports.

Sunwing will offer service to 26 sun destinations for the coming winter season, to the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America and the U.S.

Capacity is up 15% over last winter season, says Andrew Dawson, President of Tour Operations.

Sunwing Airlines is ramping up its recruitment efforts, hiring for pilots and seasonal cabin crew positions across the country for the upcoming winter season.

That’s helping Sunwing to come back strong with restored winter sun service for gateways including Regina and Saskatoon, both of which saw service reduced in the latter half of winter 2022-23.

Here’s a look at some of the growth highlights…

• 24% growth in overall capacity in Western Canada and the Prairies combined, including more flight service from Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg, regions where Sunwing has a longstanding presence and continued commitment to providing its customers with affordable sun vacations

• 26% growth in overall capacity for Atlantic Canada, including a significant lift (more than 30%) in each of Fredericton, Halifax and Gander

• 23% growth in capacity for Cuba, supplemented by a marked expansion in flight service to Cayo Largo along with the new additions of Cienfuegos and Manzanillo de Cuba

New for this winter season are packages to the Cuban destinations of Cienfuegos along with Manzanillo de Cuba, from Toronto and Montreal. Canadian sun-seekers can also expect a sizeable expansion in vacation options for destinations in Pacific Mexico, including Los Cabos, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, and more options for travel to Puerto Plata, says Dawson.

TICO collaborates with Durham Police on criminal investigation

MISSISSAUGA — Durham Regional Police have arrested and charged Tarcia Craig Brown of Whitby, ON with charges related to fraud when selling travel.

The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) collaborated with Durham Police on their criminal investigation.

It is alleged that Tarcia Craig Brown used a variety of aliases and falsified a TICO Certificate to gain employment at TICO registered travel agencies and then engaged in fraudulent activities.

In January 2020, TICO alerted the industry to the alleged conduct of Tarcia Craig Brown and the known aliases at the time that had been allegedly used to secure employment.

Says TICO: “If there are any registrants or consumers who were impacted by the alleged conduct of Tarcia Craig Brown who have not already contacted TICO or the Durham Regional Police, we encourage you to contact tico@tico.ca and Detective Constable Middleton of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5321.”

Travel agencies are reminded that TICO certification indicates only that someone has completed either the travel counsellor and/or supervisor/ manager exam successfully. Certificates are not an indication of past good conduct. Under provincial legislation, the Travel Industry Act, 2002, individuals are not registered with TICO, only businesses are registered.

Travel agencies are encouraged to always exercise due diligence during the hiring process, including background and reference checks.

Low-cost carrier Arajet opens ticket sales for Toronto-Santo Domingo route

SANTO DOMINGO — Low-cost carrier Arajet, based in the Caribbean, has opened ticket sales for its new Toronto - Santo Domingo route.

The new route will operate from October 24, 2023, with four flights per week, on Tuesdays Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Arajet began operations in September 2022.

“Our new flight from Pearson International to Las Américas International in Santo Domingo will allow our Dominican diaspora to come home with the best possible fares but will also enable more Canadians traveling for tourism or business, to visit our island and continue increasing the exchange between our two countries. The Arajet effect will continue benefiting passengers across the Americas, and our Canadians friends won’t be the exception,” said Arajet’s founder and CEO, Víctor Pacheco Méndez. Air France to offer up to 38 flights a week out of Canada for winter 2023-24

MONTREAL — Air France has released new details about its 202324 winter program from Canadian gateways.

Air France’s Ottawa route, inaugurated June 27 with an Airbus A330 (224 seats), will switch to a Boeing 787 (279 seats) at the end of October. Air France will operate this route with five flights every week, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Flight AF328 leaves Paris-Charles de Gaulle at 1:10 p.m., arriving in Ottawa at 3:05 p.m. Flight AF327 leaves Ottawa at 5:15 p.m., arriving at Paris-Charles de Gaulle the next day at 6:05 a.m. Air France is the only carrier that offers nonstop flights between Ottawa and Europe.

Flight frequencies to CDG from Montreal and Vancouver will also get a boost, with up to 21 and five a week, respectively, versus 17 and three last winter.

Finally, the Montreal-Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) route is set to return on Dec. 2 for a third season, with two flights per week on Tuesdays and Saturdays on an A320 with WiFi.

Montreal is among the five destinations served via Air France’s Caribbean regional network, which connects

Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) and Fortde-France (Martinique) to Belém (Brazil), Cayenne (French Guiana), Miami and Montreal.

In total Air France will offer up to 38 flights a week out of Canada this winter. The top European carrier in terms of capacity between Europe and Canada, Air France will connect Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa all winter.

Meanwhile, KLM, a member airline of the Air France-KLM Group, will fly between its Amsterdam Schiphol hub and 19 North American destinations: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Calgary, Cancun, Chicago, Edmonton, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Mexico, Miami, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Montreal, New York JFK, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington.

Both carriers operate a shuttle bus service in Canada, between Montreal-Trudeau, Quebec City and Ottawa for Air France, and between Montreal-Trudeau and Ottawa for KLM.

Transat agrees to sell Mexico land to Finest Resorts for US$38 million

MONTREAL — Transat has announced the intended sale of its land property in Mexico.

In a statement from the company, Transat said it has entered into a sale and purchase agreement for its land property in Puerto Morelos for US$38 million to Finest Resorts. Finest Resorts is part of The Excellence Collection and owns and operates Finest Playa Mujeres, in Cancun and Finest Punta Cana in the D.R.

Transat eyed resort development as a new division and a new direction back in 2017, when it sold its interest in H10 Hotels to start its own hotel chain in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Transat’s goal was 5,000 owned or managed hotel rooms by 2024, in key destinations including Cancun and

Transat’s hotel division was seen as the next phase in its vertical integration strategy, one that already included air travel and travel distribution. Resort development has worked well for competitors like Sunwing Travel Group, which owns Blue Diamond Resorts and also has a partnership with Planet Hollywood.

By February 2018 Transat’s hotels division had a president in place and it was all systems go.

Two years later, the pandemic hit. Along with an almost complete shutdown of travel across the Canadian travel industry, Transat was grappling with the termination of its proposed merger with Air Canada. The Canadian government had given the deal its green light, but the same could not be said for the European Commission, and in April 2021 the two companies announced the termination of their agreement.

By June 2021 Transat was gearing up for a gradual return to operations, after all four of Canada’s major airlines - Transat, Air Canada, WestJet and Sunwing - agreed to the federal government’s request to suspend sun flights through the first months of 2021.

As part of that 2021 return to operations, Transat announced that due to the decline in liquidity as a result of the pandemic, and in line with the objectives of its new strategic plan, Transat’s board of directors had approved the discontinuation of the hotels division.

Transat’s statement today said the closing of the transaction is expected to occur in Transat’s fourth quarter. The proceeds of the sale will be used to immediately repay a portion of Transat A.T. Inc.’s secured facilities.

Transat added that the divestiture of the land is aligned with the company’s strategic plan to refocus on its airline activities.

Transat’s Q2 2023 results, announced last month, saw revenues more than double year over year. Transat’s loss for Q2 2023 was $29.2 million, compared to $98.3 million in Q2 2022.

In December 2023 Palladium Hotel Group will debut its third ‘Family Selection’ space, an exclusive accommodation proposal designed for families.

The new space will be unveiled at Grand Palladium Kantenah Resort & Spa in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, following its reopening and US$40 million renovation project.

Grand Palladium Kantenah is one of four hotels that make up Palladium Hotel Group’s resort operation in Riviera Maya.

New survey polls Canadian traveller intentions for summer

TORONTO — You’d never know it from the sky-high booking levels travel retailers and wholesalers are seeing these days - but according to a new survey, only 25% of Canadians say they’re planning a vacation this summer.

The survey, released today by HelloSafe, polled 984 Canadians.

Out of the 25% of Canadians who say they plan to go on vacation this summer, 69% say they intend to spend their vacations in Canada. The remainder (31%) plan to travel abroad.

Of those planning trips this summer, in addition to the 69% doing Canadian getaways, another 9.6% are heading to the U.S., 9.4% are going to Europe, 6.8% to South America, and

5.4% to other destinations.

The survey also polled Canadians about travel durations. Among respondents who said they would travel this summer, 29.8% were planning 1-week vacations, and an almost equal percentage (29.6%) were planning 2-week vacations. A small number (5.4%) of respondents are eyeing 3-week vacations, and 12.2% are lucky enough to be planning vacations of more than 3 weeks. Just under a quarter (23%) were planning vacations of less than 1 week.

The survey looked at vacation budgets too. Of those who said they would travel this summer, one-third (33.8%) said they have a budget of $1,500+ per person for their summer vacation. About 1 in 10 (10.8%) said they expect to spend between $1,000 and $1,500 on their summer vacation. And 25.7% of Canadians are planning a vacation budget of less than $500.

Just as interesting as the stats on how Canadians are travelling this summer, are the stats on why they’re not travelling.

Bava named CCO of Windstar Cruises effective July 24

Windstar Cruises has named Janet Bava as its new Chief Commercial Officer, effective July 24.

Windstar’s current CCO, Betsy O’Rourke, will move to a consultancy role with Windstar’s parent company Xanterra Travel Collection and its ownership, The Anschutz Corporation, as well as engage in outside board opportunities. O’Rourke has served as CCO for Windstar since 2020 and also CCO of Xanterra since 2012.

Prior to joining Windstar, Bava was Chief Marketing Officer at AmaWaterways in California. From 2016 to 2018 Bava was with Silversea as VP, Marketing (Americas). From 2014 to 2016 she was the Director CRM & Customer Engagement at NBCUniversal, Inc - Universal Parks & Resort. And from 2006 - 2014, she was Manager, Direct Marketing & Customer Experience Communications for Royal Caribbean International.

Luxury yacht-style cruise line Windstar, based in Miami, brings Bava back to Florida. Bava is also once again working with O’Rourke, who was SVP of Marketing at Royal Caribbean at the same time that Bava worked for the cruise line.

Bava, in her new role with Windstar, will be responsible for driving strategic growth initiatives, leading marketing, sales, reservations, and deployment teams to further elevate the company’s position in the global market.

According to the survey, out of those respondents who said they’re not planning summer vacations, three in 10 (29.9%) blamed inflation. Almost the same number (28.5%) said they’re planning staycations at home, or planning to travel at another time of year (34.7%).

And while the worst of the pandemic seems to have passed, and travel has fully reopened, 6.9% say they will not be going on holiday this summer because of the pandemic.

CTA launches consultations on proposed APPR amendments

GATINEAU, QC — The Canadian Transportation Agency is launching consultations on proposed amendments to the Air Passenger Protection Regulations - and Canadians are invited to share their feedback.

The consultation period will be open for 30 days, ending Aug. 10, 2023. The CTA will then draft regulations, which will ultimately be finalized and approved by the CTA and Cabinet. Both the draft regulations and the finalized regulations will be published in Canada Gazette Part I and Part II, respectively. The Canada Gazette is the official newspaper of the federal government and is available online.

Canada’s Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra, first announced that proposed amendments to the Canada Transportation Act had been introduced as part of Bill C-47, the Budget Implementation Act, back in April 2023.

The proposed amendments aim to strengthen Canada’s passenger rights regime, streamline the processes for administering air travel complaints before the CTA, and increase air carriers’ accountability.

“It is clear that a stronger and simpler system is needed to increase air

carriers’ accountability and transparency, reduce the number of incidents referred to the [CTA], and streamline the [CTA’s] processes for addressing travel complaints. The proposed amendments would significantly enhance our air passenger rights regime to ensure travellers get the services and treatment they pay for and deserve,” said Minister Alghabra in April.

The CTA says its site has more instructions for providing comments on the Consultation Paper.

“The Canadian Transportation Agency welcomes the opportunity to improve the air passenger protection regime. We are committed to improving how air passengers complaints are processed and to provide better services to Canadians,” says France Pégeot, CTA Chair and CEO.

In March 2023 Minister Alghabra announced new government funding to the tune of $75.9 million over three years to make it possible for the CTA to hire more employees and make a significant dent in the processing of complaints. At that point the number of passenger rights complaints in the queue to be processed by the CTA was 42,000.

The CTA says the proposed changes to the APPR are intended to clarify, simplify and strengthen consumer protection for air passengers.

On its site, the CTA says: “Under the existing APPR, passenger entitlements depend on how a flight disruption is categorized (within airline control, within airline control but required for safety or outside airline control), making it difficult for passengers and airlines to know what passengers are entitled to, and making the regulations difficult to enforce.

“The amendments to the Act eliminated the three flight disruption categories and require airlines to provide compensation for inconvenience to passengers when there is a flight disruption, unless there are exceptional circumstances, which the CTA will have to define by regulation. They also put the burden on airlines to prove the situation is an exceptional circumstance.

“Changes proposed to the APPR would establish passenger entitlements that apply in the case of all flight disruptions, and any entitlements that may apply in exceptional circumstances.”

One objective of the consultations is to define these exceptions.

Airlines cancelling flights and refusing passenger compensation for ‘crew constraints’, saying that crew shortages constitute a safety issue and are therefore not eligible for compensation, have been a major sticking point coming out of the pandemic.

Goldwynn Resort welcomes travel advisors to Nassau with special rates

NASSAU — One of the newest hotel offerings in The Bahamas is Goldwynn Resort & Residences, which sits on a quiet stretch of Cable Beach in Nassau. The resort’s low-rise building design curves gently toward the bay on which it sits, giving a sweeping view of the turquoise Caribbean, the sandy shoreline, the stunning infinity pool and the spectacular sunsets. The opposite side faces the rolling fairways and sand traps of the Baha Mar golf course at which guests have access to tee times.

The resort is owned by the Wynn Group (not to be confused with the Wynn of Vegas-fame), which is managed by the Wynn brothers who run many of their holdings from Ontario. Goldwynn opened with 81 residential-style rooms in February 2023 (with its dining options following shortly after) and is conducive to longer stays. Although still in its early days, the resort is currently seeing Canadians book an average of five nights, depending on flights (as of press time, Air Canada, WestJet and Sunwing have scheduled nonstop flights to Nassau).

All the studios, which, at between 530 - 560 sq. ft., are akin to a spacious hotel room layout, feature kitchenettes, king beds and pull-out sofas to accommodate two adults and two children, while the 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom suites have full kitchens and range from 690 - 1,400 sq. ft.

An intimate spa and well-appointed fitness centre offer a variety of treatments and classes. Upon check-in, guests are offered a chilled glass of Prosecco and given a techcharged bracelet that shows staff you’re a guest, acts as a room key

and, although the resort isn’t all-inclusive, acts as a tapable charge card for any incidentals.

And Goldwynn is inviting agents to come take a look. “For our inaugural year, Goldwynn is excited to welcome advisors (with IATAN cards) with up to 50% off our standard rates for a maximum of three nights,” Melissa Alexander, director, sales & marketing, Goldwynn Resort & Residences, told Travelweek during a visit to the property in June.
