Evaluar cómo la crisis de la covid-19 ha impactado el mercado del turismo médico; proporcionar una descripción general del mercado global y ofrecer una perspectiva para el futuro sobre las últimas tendencias y desarrollos en el mercado del bienestar –según un comunicado de prensa publicado en el sitio oficial www.itb-berlin.com– constituye su eje temático.

ITB BERLIN: NEW STRATEGIES FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL TOURISM AND IDEAS FOR WELLNESS TOURISM Based on the fact that during the coronavirus pandemic the importance of physical and mental health has become particularly evident, a correct move by the ITB 2021 (Berlin, Germany, March 9-12) fair program is to have organized the ITB Berlin NOW virtual edition to examine the health tourism market, which has high growth potential.

República Dominicana concibe el turismo de salud parte de su marca país ENTREVISTA CON EL DR. ALEJANDRO CAMBIASO RATHE, PRESIDENTE DE LA ASOCIACIÓN DOMINICANA DE TURISMO DE SALUD Dr. Cambiaso, desde su punto de vista, ¿cómo se presenta el escenario actual del Turismo de Salud en el mundo y en particular en República Dominicana?

La pandemia de la covid-19 ha revolucionado la industria del turismo y de la salud con el advenimiento de estrictos protocolos de bioseguridad, sellos de calidad, vacunas y soluciones tecnológicas que nos brindan nuevas experiencias, expectativas, oportunidades y retos.

El turismo de salud no escapa a esta nueva realidad y requiere de ofertas y promociones innovadoras y atractivas para recuperarse. Según datos de Patients Beyond Borders, el mercado del turismo médico antes de la pandemia rondaba los $74-92 mil millones de dólares, basado en aproximadamente 21-26 millones de turistas de salud que gastan un promedio de 3 550 dólares por visita.

Por su parte, la Medical Tourism Association (MTA) dimensionaba el mercado global de turismo médico en alrededor 100 mil millones de dólares. Las estadísticas del sector varían bastante dependiendo de la fuente y hay pocos datos sobre las cifras del turismo médico en 2020.

Sin embargo, resulta evidente su marcada disminución, salvo contadas excepciones como es el caso de pacientes de la diáspora

viajando a República Dominicana para tratamientos de cirugía plástica y odontología.

Según datos del Estudio y Diagnóstico del Turismo de Salud en República Dominicana, el turismo médico durante 2018 en el país creció un 15%. En tal sentido, se infiere que se recibieron aproximadamente 47 725 pacientes internacionales por turismo de salud y 69 550 turistas asistidos por concepto de medicina turística, para un total estimado de 117 275 pacientes internacionales, cifra que no incluye a los turistas de bienestar.

Conforme el Medical Tourism Index (MTI) de 2020, nuestro país es el principal destino de turismo médico del Caribe, segundo de Latinoamérica y el número 19 en el mundo.

El turismo de salud, en 2018, generó ingresos promedio por US$ 265 132 500,00, según estimaciones e inferencias realizadas con la información primaria suministrada por los prestadores de servicios de salud y sociedades especializadas.

El MTI o Índice de Turismo Médico, elaborado por The International Healthcare Research Center, es un ranking bienal que realiza encuestas a más de 3 000 personas, consumidores y expertos; revisa 41 criterios y tres dimensiones principales que incluyen el atractivo del destino, calidad y seguridad de los servicios médicos y aspectos relacionados

a la experiencia del paciente, costos, reputación y cultura.

De acuerdo a esta métrica, los tratamientos más solicitados son cirugía plástica, odontología, ortopedia, cardiología, tratamientos de fertilidad, pérdida de peso, oftalmología y oncología, entre otros. ¿Cuál es la estrategia del destino para desarrollar el turismo de salud?

Actualmente, la nación está apostando por alianzas público privadas y nuevos proyectos, y la Asociación Dominicana de Turismo de Salud está liderando las iniciativas de incluir esta modalidad como parte de nuestra marca país, así como la implementación de la propuesta de estrategia nacional de desarrollo del turismo de salud, propuesta de sello de calidad local y fomento de las acreditaciones internacionales, y la puesta en marcha del Consejo Nacional de Turismo de Salud.

En este contexto, ¿qué rol juega la Guía de Turismo de Salud y Bienestar, cuya tercera edición se presentará en junio próximo?

La Guía de Turismo de Salud y Bienestar es una publicación de la Medical Tourism Association que nos permite mostrarle al mundo los principales atributos de República Dominicana en materia de salud y turismo, lo que fortalece el posicionamiento de la nación como un destino seguro. ▶

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC CONCEIVES HEALTH TOURISM AS PART OF ITS COUNTRY BRAND

It would be interesting if you would outline how the preparations for the 5th International Congress on Health and Wellness Tourism are going.

The 5th International Congress of Health and Wellness Tourism is an activity organized by the Dominican Association of Health Tourism and Strategic Communication AF. It will be held on June 9 and 10, 2021, at El Embajador, Royal Hideaway Hotel in Santo Domingo.

The event has become the main activity of the medical tourism sector in the Central American and Caribbean region, by bringing together important local and international decision makers in an environment designed to carry out synergies and business between healthcare centers, insurers, pharmaceutical companies, investors, airlines, tour operators, hotels, financial sector, government, transportation, legal and educational.

Planned to be held in person, the long-awaited congress will have a robust biosafety protocol and topics will be addressed in conference formats and panels related to the present, future and regulatory framework of health tourism, as well as lessons learned from the international accreditation process and COVID-19 safe standards.

Likewise, ideas and experiences on health and medical tourism will be exchanged as part of the country brand, health passports and the role of vaccines in the recovery of tourism and the economy, challenges of innovation and digital transformation in the field of health, key factors in the patient experience and public-private alliances in the health and tourism sectors, among other interesting topics.

Within the framework of the event, a Private Investment Lunch will be held together with the Banco Popular Dominicano, where the new projects in the sector will be presented to local and international investors, in order to promote the attraction of foreign direct investment, job creation and transfer of new technologies.

In the last two years, the Congress has gathered approximately 800 participants, around 70 exhibitors and more than 110 sponsors, who have been a boost to continue raising innovation, competitiveness and quality standards in health services.

Dr. Cambiaso, from your point of view, what is the current situation of Health Tourism in the world and in particular in the Dominican Republic?

The COVID-19 pandemic has revolutionized the tourism and health industry with the advent of strict biosafety protocols, quality standards, vaccines and technological solutions that give us new experiences, expectations, opportunities and challenges.

Health tourism does not escape this new reality and requires innovative offers and attractive promotions to recover. According to data from Patients Beyond Borders, the pre-pandemic medical tourism market was around $74-92 billion, based on approximately 21-26 million health tourists spending an average of $3,550 per visit.

For its part, the Medical Tourism Association (MTA) estimated the global market for medical tourism at around 100 billion dollars. Statistics for the sector vary quite a bit depending on the source and there is little data on the figures for medical tourism in 2020.

However, its marked decline is evident, with few exceptions such as diaspora patients traveling to the Dominican Republic for dental and plastic surgery treatments.

According to data from the Study and Diagnosis of Health Tourism in the Dominican Republic, during 2018 medical tourism in the country grew by 15%. In this sense, it is inferred that approximately 47,725 international patients were received by health tourism and 69,550 tourists were assisted by tourism medicine, for an estimated total of 117,275 international patients, a figure that does not include wellness tourists.

Currently, the nation is betting on public-private alliances and new projects, and the Dominican Association of Health Tourism is leading the initiatives to include this modality as part of our country brand, as well as the implementation of the proposed national strategy for the development of health tourism, proposal for a local quality standard and promotion of international accreditations, as well as the launch of the National Council for Health Tourism.

In this context, what is the role of the Health and Wellness Tourism Guide, whose third edition will be presented next June?

The Health and Wellness Tourism Guide is a publication of the Medical Tourism Association that allows us to show the world the main attributes of the Dominican Republic in terms of health and tourism, which strengthens the nation’s positioning as a safe destination.

This important digital edition, in English, will be launched within the framework of the 5th International Congress on Health and Wellness Tourism. It is an ideal instrument to guide international patients in the process of choosing a reliable healthcare, transportation and lodging provider, showing details about medical, dental, aesthetic and wellness centers; international accreditations, hotels, airports and financial institutions.

It will be available in Apple Books and Amazon Kindle eBook format. Likewise, its content will remain in its entirety on the websites of the Medical Tourism Association, ranked number one in the world in Google searches on health tourism topics.

Cuba desarrolla sus propias vacunas contra la covid-19

Sobre Abdala, la doctora Marta Ayala, directora del CIGB, señaló que, de continuar con su avance favorable, el país podría hacer su registro en las instancias internacionales y empezar la inmunización a partir de agosto próximo.

El Centro Nacional de Biopreparados de Cuba, BIOCEN, ha producido a gran escala el candidato vacunal Soberana 02, el más avanzado del país contra la covid-19, para implementar la fase III de los ensayos clínicos.

La vicedirectora de Operaciones Industriales del Instituto Finlay de Vacunas, Roselyn Martínez, dijo que el escalado productivo representa otro hito: desde el punto de vista tecnológico toda transferencia constituye un reto, pero en el caso de Soberana 02 el reto está siendo mayor por la emergencia sanitaria.

En la fase III de ensayos clínicos de Soberana 02 serán vacunados 44 010 habaneros, de entre 19 y 80 años, de ocho municipios –reportó Radio Reloj.

Cuba espera producir este año 100 millones de dosis de Soberana 02 para vacunar a toda su población de 11 millones de personas y exportar a otros países a fines de año.

El director del Instituto Finlay, Vicente Vérez, explicó que Soberana 01 constituye un posible refuerzo ideal para inmunidad en pacientes convalecientes del coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, causante de la covid-19, y también de los vacunados con productos biotecnológicos.

on cinco candidatos vacunales, Cuba es el único país de América Latina y el Caribe que desarrolla sus propias vacunas contra la covid-19: Soberana 01, Soberana 02 y Soberana Plus, del Instituto de Vacunas Finlay, así como Abdala y Mambisa, del Centro de Ingeniería Genética y Biotecnología (CIGB).

En agosto de 2020, el país se convirtió en el primero de la región y el 30 del mundo en anunciar un candidato vacunal contra la covid-19 –según www.cubadebate.cu.

Soberana 01, Soberana 02, Soberana Plus y Abdala son vacunas inyectables, administradas por vía intramuscular en el músculo deltoides, mientras Mambisa es aplicada por la nariz.

A diferencia de las vacunas de Pfizer y Moderna, no requieren de congelación profunda, lo cual facilita su almacenamiento y transporte, y son opciones más económicas y viables para los países de menos recursos.

Dos de ellas, Soberana 02 y Abdala, están comenzando la tercera fase de ensayos clínicos en este mes de marzo, apunta la citada fuente.

Soberana 02 requiere la administración de tres dosis a intervalos de dos semanas, y Abdala, dos dosis separadas por tres semanas; ambas muestran elevada respuesta inmunitaria contra el coronavirus y tienen pocos y leves efectos adversos, como un ligero dolor alrededor del lugar de la inyección.

Soberana Plus es la más reciente formulación, diseñada para pacientes convalecientes de la covid-19.

Más de 50 contingentes de médicos y profesionales de la salud cubanos fueron a 40 países para luchar contra la covid-19, según Cubadebate, y por esos esfuerzos, miles de organizaciones y personas del mundo se unen a la campaña que pide el Premio Nobel de la Paz para la Brigada Médica Henry Reeve de Cuba.

Cuba desarrolla sus propias vacunas contra la covid-19

Regarding Abdala, Dr. Marta Ayala, director of the CIGB, pointed out that, if its favorable progress continues, the country could register it in international bodies and begin immunization as of next August.

The Cuban National Center for Biopreparations (BIOCEN) has produced on a large scale the Soberana 02 vaccine candidate, the most advanced in the country against COVID-19, to implement phase III of clinical trials.

The deputy director of Industrial Operations of the Finlay Vaccine Institute, Roselyn Martínez, said that the productive scaling represents another milestone: from the technological point of view, any transfer constitutes a challenge, but in the case of Soberana 02 the challenge is greater due to the health emergency.

In Soberana 02’s phase III of clinical trials, 44,010 Havanans, between 19 and 80 years old, from eight municipalities will be vaccinated, Radio Reloj reported.

Cuba hopes to produce 100 million doses of Soberana 02 this year to vaccinate its

entire population of 11 million people and export to other countries by the end of the year.

El turismo en Cuba aplica estrictos protocolos de bioseguridad

a seguridad ha sido tradicionalmente uno de los atributos tomados en consideración por los viajeros para elegir su destino vacacional y, en estos tiempos de pandemia, adquiere un nuevo significado.

Cuba, reconocida en el ámbito global como un destino turístico seguro, se reafirma en tal sentido al aplicar el Protocolo de Higiene y Seguridad para el enfrentamiento a la covid-19 –publicado en el sitio oficial www.cuba.travel– que contiene las medidas que debe conocer todo viajero que desee visitarla.

Su objetivo es establecer las pautas para la reapertura y continuidad de los servicios turísticos en el nuevo escenario impuesto por la covid-19; y abarca los servicios hoteleros y extrahoteleros que conforman la cartera del sector turístico.

Al viajero se le exige un resultado negativo de prueba PCR, realizado 72 horas antes del viaje y certificado por laboratorios en los países de

origen; cuando llega, se le realiza otra prueba, libre de costo. Debe viajar con póliza de seguro que cubra la covid-19 o adquirirla a su entrada, en el aeropuerto, por 30 USD o su equivalente.

Cuba ha implementado el aislamiento institucional a los viajeros internacionales.

El yoga también ha echado raíces en Cuba P

ráctica milenaria de origen indio, difundida mundialmente, que beneficia la salud corporal, mental y espiritual del ser humano, también ha logrado insertarse, para bien, en la cotidianeidad de Cuba, en todos los segmentos etarios.

Como antecedente del surgimiento del Yoga en Cuba se reconoce lo publicado en la revista Bohemia del año 1957, en el cual aparece una foto de un grupo de personas practicando posturas. Esos entusiastas cubanos fueron posteriormente los fundadores, en ese propio año, de un sistema llamado Kriya Yoga, de carácter devocional, procedente del Swami Yoganada, desde Estados Unidos.

De entonces acá, su aceptación y extensión ha continuado in crescendo, historia que, para contarla, hay que remitirse a una figura

ineludible: el Profesor Eduardo Pimentel Vázquez, Maestro de Yoga Cubano acreditado por la Federación Internacional de Yoga y Yoga Alliance, y presidente de la Asociación Cubana de Yoga, ACY. En entrevista concedida a Juventud Rebelde, explicó que «el auge del yoga en Cuba se debe al trabajo realizado. Esa labor se apoya en la formación de instructores mediante un programa de 250 horas (unos dos años)».

A su decir, en exclusiva a TTC: «Comencé a practicar el Yoga en 1972, inspirado en los libros de Swami Sivananda de Rishikesh, tan-

to en sus enseñanzas físicas como mentales y espirituales. Pronto reconocí al Yoga como un sistema completo de realización personal. En 1976, me gradué de Licenciatura en Cultura Física y, para 1983, decidí abrir en mi hogar un modesto espacio para dar clases. Se me considera un pionero en la divulgación y enseñanza del Yoga en Cuba, pues fundé, en mayo de 1990, la Asociación Cubana de Yoga».

Pimentel es director y maestro del Estudio Vidya Yoga de La Habana, donde imparte clases regulares, entrenamientos, talleres y conferencias; dirige los Retiros anuales de la fundación canadiense Mhai Yoga, en las playas cubanas, de conjunto con maestros foráneos invitados; y organiza, patrocinado por el Instituto de Deportes y Recreación, INDER, el Día Mundial del Yoga en Cuba.

It came to Cuba with Reiki and Tai Chi, at the end of the 19th century, brought by instructors and amateurs who came from other places in Latin America, Spain and the United States. Since then, its acceptance and extension has continued in crescendo, a story that, to tell it, one must refer to an inescapabl1e figure: Professor Eduardo Pimentel Vázquez, Cuban Yoga teacher accredited by the International Federation of Yoga and Yoga Alliance, and president of the Cuban Yoga Association (ACY).

In an interview with the Cuban Juventud Rebelde newspaper, he explained that “the rise of yoga in Cuba is due to the work carried out. Since we founded the ACY, we have taught more than 50,000

people, including musicians, scientists, actors, visual artists and many people interested in improving their physical and mental health. This work is supported by the training of instructors through a program of 250 hours (about two years).”

As he said, exclusively to TTC: “I started practicing Yoga in 1972, inspired by the books of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, both in its physical and mental and spiritual teachings. I soon recognized Yoga as a complete system of personal fulfillment. In 1976, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Culture and, by 1983, I decided to open a modest space in my home to teach. I am considered a pioneer in the dissemination and teaching of Yoga in Cuba, since I founded, in May 1990, the Cuban Yoga Association.”

Pimentel is the director and teacher of the Vidya Yoga Studio in Havana, where he gives regular classes, trainings, workshops and lectures; he directs the annual Retreats of the Canadian Mhai Yoga Foundation, in Cuban beaches, together with invited foreign teachers; and he organizes World Yoga Day in Cuba, sponsored by the Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER). epvyoga@infomed.sld.cu www.mhaiyoga.com

COVID-19 COVERAGE IN CUBA TRAVEL INSURANCE

Cobertura covid-19 en los Seguros de Viajes de Cuba A

partir de la compleja situación epidemiológica presentada en el país como consecuencia de la covid–19, ESICUBA emitió el pasado 2020 modificaciones en sus Seguros de Viajes.

Estos seguros se destinan a todos los visitantes foráneos que arriben al territorio nacional a través de receptivos cubanos, agencias de viajes, turoperadores internacionales y aerolíneas con operaciones en Cuba.

En aras de satisfacer las demandas de este mercado frente al escenario actual, y a su vez respaldar de cierta forma los protocolos sanitarios anunciados por las autoridades cubanas, la Aseguradora decidió incluir la cobertura a la covid-19 dentro de los beneficios que brinda el producto.

Pero, en esencia, ¿qué gastos amparan dicha cobertura?

1. Gastos médicos por enfermedad covid-19.

En el caso de que un viajero llegara a contagiarse en Cuba, tendrá cubiertos todos los gastos médicos y hospitalarios en que se incurran a partir de indicaciones médicas de facultativos autorizados.

2. Gastos derivados de la prueba de PCR en  esicuba.clientes@esicuba.cu

Cubre los gastos médicos (medicamentos, alojamiento y alimentación) necesarios para mantener al viajero en el centro de aislamiento durante el período de cuarentena o aislamiento hasta su regreso al país de origen.

Based on the complex epidemiological situation in the country as a consequence of COVID-19, last 2020 ESICUBA issued modifications to its Travel Insurance.

These insurances are intended for all foreign visitors who arrive in the national territory through Cuban receptors, travel agencies, international tour operators and airlines with operations in Cuba.

In order to meet the demands of this market in the current situation, and in turn support in a certain way the health protocols announced by the Cuban authorities, the insurance company decided to include COVID-19 coverage as part of the benefits provided by the product.

But, in essence, what expenses cover such coverage?

1. Medical expenses for cases of COVID-19.

In the event that a traveler becomes infected in Cuba, he/she will have covered all the medical and hospital expenses incurred based on the medical indications of authorized doctors.

2. Expenses derived from the PCR test. If during the stay in Cuba, the traveler presents symptoms compatible with COVID-19 and the performance of the PCR test is prescribed for the confirmation of the disease, carried out in a health institution by an authorized physician, the cost of said test will be covered.

3. Prolongation of stay for quarantine due to suspected contagion with COVID-19. It covers the medical expenses (medicines, accommodation and food) necessary to keep the traveler in the isolation center during the period of quarantine or isolation until their return to the country of origin.

In addition, it should be known that the diagnostic test (PCR) or preventive health controls established in the health authorities’ medical protocol are excluded from this coverage.

EL CARIBE Y LATINOAMÉRICA CIFRAN ESPERANZAS EN LAS VACUNAS ANTICOVID PARA REACTIVAR AL TURISMO

l Caribe, afectado por la caída en llegada de visitantes el pasado año, entre un 60% y un 80%, debido a la pandemia, cifra las esperanzas en las vacunas contra la covid-19 para reactivar la industria turística.

Las naciones del área están buscando vacunas en la India y China –apunta sandiegouniontribune.com; al menos 13 países se adhirieron al programa COVAX de la Organización Mundial de la Salud; algunas islas han recibido vacunas de AstraZeneca, a través del programa Vaccine Friendship de la India…

Cuba es la única nación de América Latina y el Caribe que desarrolla sus propias vacunas; con cinco candidatos vacunales, espera vacunar a toda su población y exportar a otros países a fines de año.

República Dominicana recibió de China 768 000 dosis de la Sinopharm y está empezando a recibir de AstraZeneca y de Pfizer; estima que, para el final de 2021, el 70% de los dominicanos mayores de 18 años estarán vacunados.

Jamaica espera recibir 50 000 vacunas de la India, 14 400 de AstraZeneca y se apuntó para obtener 1,8 millones de dosis a través de la Plataforma de Suministros Médicos Africana, una iniciativa sin fines de lucro de la Unión Africana.

Dominica recibió 70 000 dosis y espera otros cargamentos;

Hasta mayo, Argentina obtendrá 1,9 millones de dosis; Perú, 1,2 millones; Chile, 818 mil; Ecuador contará con 756 mil; Bolivia (672 mil), Paraguay (304 mil) y Uruguay, 148 mil, conforme a la propia Prensa Latina.
