FROM THE EDITOR...

Travel fuses a plethora of experiences into one or a few planned, or spontaneous excursions. This often ranges from flying, driving, hitchhiking, scuba diving, to conversing, dancing, singing, climbing, and of course eating and drinking. Travel can be tailored to your specific needs, to the point where one can visit a home away from home, to simply change scenery, or to experience completely new adventures, and realise childhood dreams. In the midst of this diverse collection of activities lies the core idea that more than anything travel is a mind-set. Travel is freedom of the mind and the physical culmination of an individual’s aspirations. Travel stems from motivation, whether it be motivation to work or motivation to explore, once you decide to travel you are truly embarking on a quest to fulfil your desires. There is little limit to where you travel, and even less limit to how you carry out your journey, your travels are controlled only by your deepest yearnings, and your devotion to seeing them come to life. Dare to be there! This month the winner for our November Cover competition is Conah MacFarlane. Congratulations Conah on your beautiful seaside shot at La Paradis hotel in Mauritius! Please continue to send us your entries and your photograph could be featured on the cover of the next Issue of TravelmagSA Finding Fabulous.

Fern of the Vine

Fern Of The Vine D.I.Y Part Deux I

t’s twilight in the African bush. You are about to pour yourself a glass of wine to enhance the evening’s ambience and savour the splendour of your natural surroundings, but you forgot to pack the corkscrew? What do you do? Firstly, find a heavy (preferably blunt) object and give yourself several beatings over the head for being so irresponsible. Then, once you have sufficiently recovered from your headache - or if you hit hard enough – concussion, read this. Last month, I began a quest to find the simplest way to open a bottle of wine no matter where you are and what tools are at your disposal. My mission continues…

3. THE STEAM METHOD

As the wine is heated, the rising temperature causes steam pressure to build up under the cork, which should, in theory, force it out. “Ooh, Science!” Pour enough water into a pot to submerge the bottom of your bottle of wine, stand the bottle in the water and turn on the heat. Patience was a prerequisite waiting for the water to boil. Once it was bubbling though, things got interesting. The wine level rose underneath the cork as the pressure gradually pushed it out of the bottle. Once enough of the cork was exposed to get a good handhold, I turned off the stove, using an oven glove to remove the bottle from the pot and to hold it while I pulled the cork out. Before removing the cork I did leave the bottle to cool for a minute to negate possible pressure build up and prevent an explosion. My first triumph! However, I’m not keen. Heat + wine = disaster. Wine is stored and matured in cool cellars for a reason. Heat literally destroys wine. This method should only be employed if you intend to use the wine for cooking (I made poached pears) or to make a spicy pot of glühwein to warm your cockles around a Winter campfire.

5. THE BRUTE FORCE METHOD

Find a rigid, preferably blunt object with a smaller diameter than the cork. Before attempting this method it’s wise to hold the bottle with an old tea towel or something you don’t mind getting wine-stained. Your white jersey is obviously not a great idea. For this experiment, I used the handle of a wooden spoon. Grip the bottle firmly with your non-dominant hand, while using your blunt object to shove the cork inside the bottle with your other hand. On the first attempt the cork slid effortlessly into the bottle with a minor splash onto the tea towel. I love this method. It’s the most feasible way to open a bottle of wine absolutely anywhere as you can literally use whatever you happen to have at your disposal. A key pushed into the cork worked just as well. A pen, a stick, a tent pole, heck even your index finger (recently washed mind you) will do the trick. There were some miniscule pieces of cork floating in my glass, but really, not enough to sufficiently aggravate me. This is a minor inconvenience to endure. Better to have wine in your glass with a side of cork, rather than an empty glass and a thirsty soul. I sense the beginnings of an inspirational quote there. Of course the obvious drawback is that once you’ve pushed the cork into the bottle you have nothing to close it with. This means you simply have to finish the bottle. “Oh, the agony!”

4. GO FISHING METHOD

This seemed incredibly plausible. Take a piece of wire and bend one end into a hook. Push the hook down between the cork and the bottle neck. Once the wire is past the cork you simply turn the hook to puncture the underside of the cork and pull. For the first attempt I used an electrical wire with the insulation stripped off. After a few unsuccessful attempts to push the wire into the bottle, I wasn’t getting anywhere. Electrical wire is too thick. I then tried an alternative. I straightened two paperclips into long hooks and tried to insert one on each side of the cork like a set of pincers. However, even though paperclip wire is thinner, it proved to be as ineffective. Even after straightening one paperclip out completely to make it as thin as possible, I still couldn’t get it past the top section of the cork. Another letdown. My wine is wrapped snugly in my backpack and I’m off hiking. Cheers!

Q&A Editor Keagan Lamb had an exclusive with Chris Lehane, Head of Global Policy and Public Affairs, for Airbnb this month, at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Q. Please tell us about yourself, your past experiences

in the business and political world, and what lead to you becoming the Head of Global Policy and Public Affairs for Airbnb?

A. I have been doing this job for a little over two years. Pri-

or to that for 16 years I had my own consulting firm, where I represented political clients in the US and internationally, as well as big businesses and high profile individuals that face some type of challenge or crisis, and lastly mainly because of my personal interests and professional sports entertainment.

CHRIS LEHANE 8

I wrote a book on crisis management, and as a screenwriter I wrote a movie on political consultants. I also spent six years

working in the white house for President Clinton, which was a unique and special opportunity. It’s the first time I have been back to South Africa since 2001. I was here quite a bit when Nelson Mandela was President, because the Clinton White House and the SA government had a commission. The President and the Vice President Al Gore visited a number of times so I actually spent a bunch of time in Johannesburg and Cape Town. On top of that I got married in December of 2001, and I chose South Africa for my honeymoon. I have voted with my feet in terms of South Africa, and I have two sons who are 11 and 13 and they were very bitter that I was not bringing them on this trip, so they will come back on a future trip.

home that they control, they either live in, or sometimes it’s a second home, or it could be a room in their home, a guest house over their garage, or any version of that, and making it available for a short term rental over a digital platform either on the website, or on the app that’s available on your mobile device. You as the guest, someone looking to travel, can go on the App or the website and look at a variety of homes and fill out information regarding the parameters that you are looking for in a particular neighbourhood, price range, number of rooms, and you’ll get options to choose from.

keep all of your hosts accountable and ensure standards across the board?

If you are the host, the person who is making their home available, you would go through a process to get on the platform and then you advertise your home. A host makes 97% of the money that they offer for their home, and they have total control over how much they want to receive, and who they want to rent their home to, as long as it is consistent with our larger values. We call this the sharing economy or home sharing.

A. In its simplest form Airbnb is all about someone using a

Finding Fabulous

been around for a long time. I often joke but it’s actually true that home sharing existed before hotels, in fact hotels actually disrupted home sharing. In the past people used to travel, and if you look at ads in old papers in Johannesburg and Cape Town in the 1700s and 1800s, you would see people offering places to stay in their homes. What is new about this is it’s over a digital platform. You’re taking an old idea putting it on a platform, and you’re revolutionising it and making it really available and accessible. In term of how we make it work, hosts and guests rate each other on a 5 star rating system, and it’s a blind system, so both parties can rate each other. On the system if you are not consistently getting a 4 or a 5 star rating both as a guest and as a host, you basically migrate off it really quickly. I am a host in California and I can take a guests rating into account before I invite them into my home, and in the same way, as a guest you know that you won’t necessarily get invited in unless you have a good star rating. Basically it creates a social contract, which incentivises people. I travelled for about 15 – 20 years when I had my business, to hotels typically, and I don’t think that I made my bed once

10

TravelMagSA - Finding Fabulous | Issue 39

in a hotel in all those years, but I make my bed every morning when I stay in Airbnb, because you want to make sure you get that five star rating. In that way, it encourages people to behave as they would in their own home. We have also built other systems into it, we have an identity process which makes sure guests and hosts are who they say they are, and whether there are things that could be flagged as a result of that, about why It would be inappropriate for them to be on the platform. We also have the Host Guarantee where we guarantee up to a million dollars if something happens in a property, and we also have a liability insurance policy which applies if something should happen with a guest at a property. We have algorithms built into the system, this is where it gets a bit technical, but they really get smart in terms of being able to identify predictive technology and so they flag things in advance, which allows us to ask questions if something gets flagged. We also have a 24/7 365 customer support service that can step in. In short we have built a whole ecosystem around this, but at the foundation is the rating system.

Finding Fabulous riences, an offer through which locals create unique activities, giving travellers unprecedented access and deep insights into communities and places they may not otherwise come across. We are particularly thrilled to have launched the Experiences product in South Africa, making the country one of the few emerging destinations in which hosts offer both homestays and Experiences on our platform. Today, over 90 Experiences are available in South Africa, of which 15 percent are Social Impact Experiences, the proceeds of which go directly to a nonprofit, all helping to diversify the country’s tourism offer and enable South Africans to turn their hobbies and passions into economic opportunities. •

In Silicon Valley, they have something called the ‘network of fact’, which is in most business models. You have a seller selling something and a buyer buying something, but the person making the most money is the person in the middle, the distributor, because they effectively control the supply chain. With a platform like Airbnb what you’re effectively doing is disintermediation, or taking away the traditional distributor and connecting the supply directly with the consumer. It works best when both feel like they are maximising the deal that they are getting, and so the rating system works within that, so if the host is doing well and the guest is doing well they rate each other well, and that leads to them telling their friends and family. That’s why from 2009 to date we have gone from two guys living in an apartment in San Francisco, with the idea of people staying on an air mattress, to 200+ million people who travel using the platform in 65 000 cities, and 191 countries.

Q. Explain Airbnb’s social impact experiences, how they work and the thought process behind it?

A. To meet growing traveller demand for unique or different

kinds of experiences, Airbnb earlier this year launched Expe-

Social Impact Experiences build on the inherent good of Airbnb travel, empowering nonprofits by giving them a platform to fundraise and promote their mission and vision, and by driving Airbnb users to engage in social causes around the globe. Each organization decides what experience will most help the communities they serve -- whether it’s fundraising, building awareness, volunteering, or all of the above -and we waive our service fees so that 100% of the proceeds go directly to the nonprofit. With these experiences, Airbnb uses its global footprint and peer review system to propel impactful organizations, including in neighborhoods that are not normally on the tourist map. Immersing in a social cause, community, and mission and vision of a non-profit transforms people to act beyond the lifetime of the experience, creating longterm donors, volunteers, and ambassadors to a cause. We have 139 Social Impact experiences live on the Airbnb platform (15 of those in South Africa) Cape Town is an especially strong market on Social Impact experiences - SI represents 13% of the overall CT supply but accounts for 20 % of bookings and 25% of the revenue (much higher than global numbers)

Q. What was your first experience with Airbnb, and what recommendations do you have for our readers?

A. I was looking to go to Italy, as I have family from there,

and I was searching for hotel rooms. The cost of two adjoining rooms in some of these places was so expensive, I might have just bought the hotel. A friend of mine said to me try this thing called Airbnb, and I said isn’t that just like renting someone’s sofa, and they corrected me and said don’t you stay at beach houses and lake houses, and they said well it’s the same thing, just over a digital platform. We ended up staying In a place, which is in the neighbourhood my family comes from in a really phenomenal villa, and we were able to spend two weeks there instead of a week. The kids had such a connection to their family and culture and the experience imprinted on them in a different way. I do think that you get that magic of travel when it’s transformative and you actually have that authentic experience. If you are looking to travel with your family, it is an incredible experience - try it!

barbecued jackfruit, black beans, roasted sweet potato cream, guacamole, seasonal greens, and apple slaw there are no flavour sacrifices being made there. From breakfast to elevenses, lunch to supper, at LUX* there is an inspired menu for every taste. Trees of Wishes are reminiscent of Japan’s ancient Tanabata festival wishing trees, and Brazil’s pretty Bonfim wish ribbons. At LUX* Resorts & Hotels, guests are given ribbons marked with their initials and the date of their stay. Tie a ribbon around a branch on LUX* Tree of Wishes, close your eyes and make a wish. WHY YOU WILL FALL FOR THE SEVILLE LANDMARKS

Located in southern Spain, Seville’s astonishing architecture and monuments draw from both Spanish and Moorish influences. A glorious mishmash of Gothic cathedrals, Mudéjar palaces and striking contemporary constructions, this historic city has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to extraordinary sights. Follow Trafalgar’s local specialists to discover the finest Seville landmarks. THE ALCAZÁR One of Seville’s most show-stopping constructions, The Alcazár is a sprawling 10th century Moorish complex of stately rooms, scenic courtyards and stunning bath halls. The beauty and intricacy of its elaborate decorative columns and ceramic tile work defies belief. You may recognise it as the setting for Dorne in Game of Thrones. Originally built as a fort in 913AD, it’s been continually revamped over 11 centuries.

The Neo-Arabic style Museum of Popular Arts, the Neo-Gothic Royal Pavilion and the Neo-Renaissance-style Provincial Archaeological Museum. Curiously, all were built for the Iberico-American Exhibition of 1929, and designed by the same architect: Anibal González.

PLAZA DE AMERICA

MARIA LUISA PARK Strewn with exotic plants, colourful mosaic fountains, ornamental statues and tree-lined boulevards, Maria Luisa Park is a vast park running alongside the Guadalquivir River. Once the gardens of the Palace of San Telmo, today Maria Luisa Park is Seville’s principle green public space, donated to the city in 1893 by Infanta Luisa Fernanda, the Duchess of Montpensier. Take a stroll around its fragrant orange trees, Mediterranean pines and pretty flower beds.

PLAZA DE ESPAÑA

MARIA LUISA PARK SEVILLE CATHEDRAL

PLAZA DE ESPAÑA What a sight! Located on the outer edge of Maria Luisa Park, Plaza de España was also designed in the 1920s by Anibal González, like Plaza de America’s buildings. It’s a large, semi-circular complex in art deco and neo-Mudejar styles, flanked by towers at each end. Its façade is ornamented with colourful azulejos (ceramic tiles and decorations) in traditional Andalusian style. An incredible 58 benches line the front exterior, each depicting paintings of Spanish provinces.

SEVILLE CATHEDRAL Seville’s Cathedral is the world’s largest Gothic cathedral and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vast medieval structure is spectacularly beautiful to look at, and its awe-inspiring scale seemingly challenges logic. In fact, legend has it, Seville authorities originally stated, “Let’s construct a church so large future generations will think we were mad”, before its construction. Santa Maria de la Sede is home to 80 chapels, the tomb of Christopher Columbus and the majestic Giralda tower – originally a minaret of a mosque the cathedral was built on.
