SUMMER 2018

From

CAMPERto

Counselor W by Holly Fisher

hen you drop your child off at a summer day camp, entrusting their care to a teenage camp counselor, it’s comforting to know many of those students were once young campers.

Anna Coopersmith was barely in elementary school when she attended a trip camp through the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department. Now a 19-year-old student at Trident Technical College, she is a camp counselor in that same program.

“I remember it being so much fun for me as a kid and just as fun for the counselors, too,” Coopersmith said. So, instead of a opting for a more traditional summer job in fast food or retail, Coopersmith signed up to be a camp counselor last summer. “It was a fantastic social experience, making so many new friends all while spending my summer doing outdoor activities, learning at museums, and coming home with hilarious things the kids had said or done that day,” she said. “It was far more enjoyable than being inside on beautiful days, doing monotonous tasks for any other job.”

Coopersmith, who is transferring soon to the College of Charleston, said bonding with the campers was such a rewarding part of her experience as a counselor. One child, in particular, clung onto her all summer. “She was so incredibly sweet and fun, we both completely bawled our eyes out on the last day of camp. I had never done that over a kid that I wasn’t even related to. It was honestly so heartwarming knowing I gave her such an amazing summer.”

“… we want [our future generation] to look back and remember camp not only as one of the best summers ever, but as a learning experience they’ll remember for years to come.” – Anna Coopersmith

Coopersmith admits being a camp counselor comes with its challenges — especially trying to help children who might be acting out. Sometimes the child is simply misunderstood, so Coopersmith and other counselors do their best to be good role models and make them feel welcome into the camp family. Because young children tend to look up to the counselors, Coopersmith said it’s important that counselors be mature and have a solid moral compass because the children imitate the behavior they see. “This is our future generation here, we want them to look back and remember camp not only as one of the best summers ever, but as a learning experience they’ll remember for years to come,” she said. Interested in becoming a camp counselor for Mount Pleasant Recreation? Apply online by visiting MtPleasantRec.com and clicking the Jobs & Careers link on the right-hand side. FIND Artist YOUR INNER

Instructor looks to the sea for camp inspiration

by Holly Fisher When Diana Connors signed her daughter up for camp at Park West Recreation Complex several years ago, she happened to meet some Mount Pleasant Recreation Department employees and told them about her background as an artist. That chance meeting led to Connors filling in for an art camp and then it simply grew from there, she said. For the last five years, Connors has been teaching art camps with the Mount Pleasant Rec Department, including a series of painting classes her young students love. A former elementary school teacher in New York and graphic designer, Connors rekindled her love of art and painting when she moved to Mount Pleasant. Neighbors started asking her to give

their children art lessons, and her homebased business, Back Porch Art, was born. In between teaching classes and hosting paint parties, Connors teaches camps throughout the year for ages 5 and up. At each summer camp this year, students will paint four canvases plus a wooden painting - anything from giant flip flops to a surfboard. Most of her half-day camps have a coastal theme. At “commotion in the ocean,” young artists paint a starfish, a jellyfish and a large rainbow fish cut from wood. In the “sand and sea life” camp, students go home with paintings of a sea turtle, sand dollar and a hermit crab. Connors puts a lot of work into planning her camps, she said, constantly looking for inspiration and making notes

throughout the year. “I just really enjoy it and look forward to coming up with the new ideas for the coming year,” she said. Connors, a mom of two, creates classes that work for a variety of ages and skill levels. Students start with a base shape, such as a triangle, so they aren’t intimidated. And then they build from there, she explained. Older students tend to add more details and make the painting their own, while the younger children are more likely to follow Connors’ lead and direction. Many students will sign up for all her camps, ending their summer with quite a collection of artwork. “I love teaching the camps, I love the kids. I love seeing how proud they are,” Connors said.

on’t tell long-time dance instructor Angie Cirnigliaro you can’t dance. Everyone in Cirnigliaro’s therapeutic dance classes can participate in movement exercises and activities, including older students with Parkinson’s disease or those using a wheelchair or a walker.

canes, walkers, wheelchairs, she said. And often those devices end up pushed off to the side as students engage in the class.

Cirnigliaro isn’t teaching a traditional, structured dance class with leotards and ballet poses. Her classes are about movement through music. It’s a low-impact artistic outlet with all the benefits of dance.

One of Cirnigliaro’s students, Susan McKenna of Mount Pleasant, said, “Angie’s approach to dance is very gentle and accepting. I have problems moving, but I have felt free when I have worked with her.”

Cirnigliaro sees how those with Parkinson’s disease respond to the movement, the music and social opportunities of the Movement Through Dance classes she teaches with the Town of Mount Pleasant (formerly at the Mount Pleasant Senior Center and now at the R. L. Jones Center).

Cirnigliaro’s mother was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease so she’s both personally and professionally passionate about this subject. Cirnigliaro is a member of Dance with Parkinson’s and she’s in the process of getting certified through Dance with PD, the only certification program in America.

The idea of teaching dance to people with Parkinson’s disease is relatively new to the Charleston area, but Cirnigliaro said it’s growing in other cities. Roper St. Francis Healthcare and the Medical Unversity of South Carolina support this kind of program, and the research is proving how beneficial it can be, she said.

“With my family’s interest in Parkinson’s and my love of dance, she really encouraged me to look into benefits of dance for Parkinson’s patients,” Cirnigliaro said. “It’s a relatively new phenomenon, but growing so quickly. There are so many scientific links to Parkinson’s and rhythmic movement and audio/ visual cues such as music.”

“This is more rewarding than the entirety of my dance career. I’m focusing on dance now for the rewards rather than the awards. At the end of the day, everyone is a person and every person can be a dancer.” – Angie Cirnigliaro

In August 2017, Cirnigliaro sold her studio, DanceCarolina in Mount Pleasant, so she could focus full time on her passion of teaching movement courses to those with Parkinson’s as well as anyone with special needs.

Cirnigliaro references a quote from a movement disorders specialist and neurologist Dr. Christine Cooper, who said, “One of the most exciting areas of medical research right now focuses on how important physical activity is for brain health - both in terms of new learning and of maintaining brain connections. Separately, music and rhythmic therapy is a proven tool to help with movement, coordination, and mood. Together, dance combines the benefits of physical activity with music, which makes dance one of the most fun and effective ways of boosting overall brain health.” And Cirnigliaro sees those benefits play out in her classes as students experience an increase in balance, fluidity of motion and confidence while expanding their range of motion and posture. She adapts the class to fit any student and any mobility device 40 | IN MOTION MOUNT PLEASANT RECREATION MAGAZINE

She also works with the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department to teach therapeutic dance through the Unified Sports program that allows students of all abilities to participate in athletic programs. Cirnigliaro teaches a weekly hip hop class. At her former dance studio, Cirnigliaro had started therapeutic dance classes under a program she called FEELanthropi. She retained that program in the sale of the studio and plans to formalize FEELanthropi into a nonprofit organization so she can fundraise and apply for grants that would allow her to offer all her programs free of charge. Cirnigliaro is teaching classes six days a week and wouldn’t have it any other way. “This is more rewarding than the entirety of my dance career. I’m focusing on dance now for the rewards rather than the awards. At the end of the day, everyone is a person and every person can be a dancer.”
