Mariko’s challenges began when she was
in her early teens, with the beginning of World War II. Although she was born in America, her parents were Japanese. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the Japanese Americans living on the West Coast were placed in internment camps. Mariko and her family were held in one of these camps for three and a half years. Instead of succumbing to boredom, she busied herself teaching classical Japanese dance to the other inmates.
