MICHAEL MCGRADY A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
![]()
With these recent studio works, I’ve been exploring color chords and the introduction of intensities that I have previously avoided. I seek to maintain a very clear depiction of the scene and yet find a way to get complex color progressions within the various masses. This is what I have seen in nature. I am attempting to understand it, simplify it and communicate it for others to enjoy.

Born of Irish, British, German and French heritage. Michael McGrady was raised in the Pacific Northwest and studied Business at the University of Washington (UW). After overcoming a life-changing illness at the young age of 19, he decided to leave life at the university and took a leap of faith to pursue his passion of becoming a film and television actor and film maker. With $185 and a backpack, Michael decided to move to Los Angeles in1983.
He quickly rose through the ranks of working actors to become a mainstay in Hollywood, working steadily for close to 40 years in popular primetime TV shows and studio films, such as: Diggstown, with Academy Award winners James Wood and Lou Gossett Jr., with Kevin Costner in Wyatt Earp, Charlie Sheen in Five Aces and Michelle Pfeiffer in Deep End of The Ocean.
Besides Michael’s prolific movie career, he can also be seen as FBI Agent, Frank Barnes in Showtimes’ Ray Donovan and Captain Herrington on CBS’ Seal Team.
In addition to his successful acting career, Michael is also an accomplished and collected fine artist who has never lost sight of his deep-felt passion for art. Working with palette knives, he uses a fluid and painterly approach, manipulating the paint into bold shapes that are woven together to create a stimulating scene. While he has closely studied the works of any number of artists, he is mainly self-taught, spending countless hours in front of the easel painting sketches, life studies, color studies and finished studio works.
Michael and his wife Ilka divide their time between Washington State and California.
