With the Santa Rosa mountains as a stunning backdrop, Members enjoy an eminently playable 18-hole Championship Course that features lightning-fast greens, plenty of Augusta White sand bunkers, and captivating water features. Just to keep it interesting, there are also dramatic elevation changes, split greens, and Arnie’s secret tee boxes. Golf at Tradition is always fascinating, perfectly embodying the charm and dynamic nature of its designer, and a reflection of our appreciation for the game and its traditions.

THE FRONT 9 The front nine holes feature stunning mountain views played through our wildflower landscape, and challenging water features. Even regular players may not know about the “secret” tees hidden throughout, and our par-4 Hole 7 also features a unique split green that plays to the same yardage.

THE BACK 9 Mountains and natural desert landscape define the back nine holes. The par-4 Hole 17 is Tradition’s signature hole—playing from an elevated tee, your shot drops over 200 hundred feet to the fairway below, while offering one of the finest views in all of La Quinta. Look for Arnie’s personal tee box if you’re up for the hike!

THE SHORT COURSE Shorter but not necessarily easier, the Short Course features small, wellbunkered greens with water coming into play on holes 8 and 9. The serious player can sharpen his or her game here, and the beginner golfer can get in no-pressure practice as well. The Short Course is also where parents and grandparents enjoy time with their children.

The comprehensive practice facility features a superb double-ended driving range, seven different target greens, short game area with practice bunkers and large practice putting greens. Our Golf Staff offer a variety of opportunities to hone your game, including group clinics and personal lessons.

THE SANTA ROSA MOUNTAINS Our setting is distinguished by lush terrain tucked against the Santa Rosa Mountains—our breathtaking and majestic protectors from the desert, wind and sun, and reminders of our connection to the natural environment.
150,000 FLOWERS We work with local growers to curate the flowers planted every year, custom mixes of different flower types and colors, a wonderful tradition that blesses our Tradition home owners with spectacular vistas.

A RICH HISTORY

The estate that became Tradition Golf Club was originally homesteaded in 1902 by John Marshall. It was later named La Quinta or “the country house” for the small house Marshall had built on the property. In the years following, Marshall added the Hacienda, the main ranch house, to the property — built by female Architect, Helen Douglass French.

HACIENDA DEL GATO Marshall Ranch was sold to William and Elizabeth Rosecrans, whose last name is still wellknown around Southern California. The home was renamed “Hacienda del Gato” in honor of the family cat that alerted Mrs. Rosecrans of a rattlesnake outside the kitchen doorway.

CELEBRITY RETREAT Hacienda del Gato became a private retreat for stars such as Clark Gable and Katharine Hepburn, and leaders including Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, who enjoyed an exclusive retreat, a private sanctuary from the world at large.
