With eight hours left to drive to my new home, as my daughter’s cat’s yowling and my young son’s perpetual requests/questions… “Are we there yet?” “I want to stop and eat,” “I have to go to the bathroom.” (again!?!)… set the backdrop to my wandering thoughts, I found myself imagining if it would be possible to find our fit in this new place. And if so, how?

I was leaving a city and home I loved, driving to a house I had purchased sight unseen, and moving to a neighborhood I had never visited, in a city and state I had only been to once. I was excited, nervous, and EXHAUSTED! Exhausted from the months of packing and preparing. Exhausted from the long to-do lists and lack of sleep. But mostly exhausted from the emotions of saying goodbye to longtime friends, co-workers, and family members. Moving gave me a realistic perspective and appreciation for anyone going through a relocation process.

NAs a real estate professional since 1998, I decided to create this guide to help acclimate individuals moving to the Metro Duluth area and to offer an overview of what life here is like.

St. Louis County has 4,655 lakes, providing plenty of choices for spending time on the water. Three popular lakes close to Duluth are desired destinations for residential homes and recreation. Pike Lake is a 482 acre lake located 10 miles west of Duluth with paved roads, city utilities, private land, and a 9-hole golf course. Located northwest and within 20 minutes of Duluth are 3,071 acre Fish Lake Reservoir and 8,000 acre Island Lake Reservoir. Duluth Artist: Adam Swanson

Adam’s work, named, “Grandma’s Marathon,” is featured on page 2. Adam is a popular painter, muralist, and unabashed environmental advocate. Adam combines his work with scientists and his passion for the environment to create paintings of nature, scenes from Duluth, or statement pieces depicting tensions between humans and the natural world. I’ve had the privilege of working with Adam on a few projects, and he is patient, fun, genuine, and a really good human being. Duluth Philanthropist: Tom Wheeler

The late Tom Wheeler’s love for Duluth was deep, undeniable, and infectious. Tom shared captivating tales of his ancestors making the arduous trek to Duluth by foot to establish one of the city’s first sawmills. As some of the earliest settlers to homestead in Duluth, generations of Wheelers have participated in the city’s growth and development. And so, it comes as no surprise that Tom took great personal pride in the prosperity of Duluth and loved calling it home. Tom was an athlete, businessman, writer, and philanthropist who believed sincerely in giving back to the community that meant so much to him. The Wheeler Fieldhouse, featured on page 21, is situated on land that was generously donated to the city by the Wheeler family.
