Valley Forge National Historical Park News

The Continental Army has arrived!

On December 19, 2016 the National Park Service commemorated the 239th anniversary of the Continental Army's arrival at Valley Forge. Historic re-enactors, park rangers and local volunteers participated in a quarter-mile lantern-lit march that took visitors on an illuminated tour of Valley Forge through reconstructed huts, fortifications and trails. This free evening program immersed participants in the history, sights and sounds of the storied encampment and is the only opportunity to experience Valley Forge after dark. Events at Historic Sugartown

Continuing into the Winter & Early Spring!

Open for Weekend Guided Tours Historic Sugartown is a beautifully restored 19thcentury village crossroads located outside of Malvern in Chester County. Named after tavern keeper Eli Shugart, Sugartown became a bustling village corner during the late 1800s, bringing people together to exchange news, conduct business and share their lives as a community. Visitors enjoy a guided tour of the c. 1880 General Store, a 19th-century School Exhibit, the c. 1805 Garrett House, the Book Bindery, the 19th-century bank barn & agricultural exhibit, and the Carriage Museum.

Hours: Saturdays, 11 am - 4 pm, and Sundays, 1 - 4 pm starting May 1st.

Admission: $5 Adults, $4 Seniors (60+ yrs), $3 Children (3 - 17 yrs).

Children ages 2 and younger admitted free.

Paper Marbling Workshops

Tea & Trinkets

Learn to create marbled paper in Historic Sugartown's Bindery! Marbling is the art of floating and designing watercolors on a base fluid then permanently transferring the design to paper. Colonial Williamsburg-trained instructor, Ramon Townsend of ColonialBindery.com, will lead the class through the entire marbling process.

Participants will take home their finished papers.

Enjoy an afternoon tea at Historic Sugartown.

Bookbinding Level I Workshop Saturday, March 25th - 9AM - 2PM

Try your hand at traditional bookbinding in Historic Sugartown's Book Bindery! Colonial Williamsburg-trained instructor, Ramon Townsend of ColonialBindery.com, will lead the class through the entire binding process.

Thanks to the enterprising Quakers, Chester County was recognized as the "breadbasket" of the nation and one of the most agriculturally advanced regions of southeastern Pennsylvania.

Amid the backdrop of the 18th and 19th-century carriages and sleighs on exhibit in Historic Sugartown's Carriage Museum,regional historian Catherine Quillman will share her research on the vital role of transportation and agriculture on the 19thcentury experience here in Chester County. Her illustrated talk will include vintage photographs and will draw connections to the transportation and agricultural collections preserved by Historic Sugartown.The Carriage Museum is a partnership with Chester County Historical Society.

Jenkins Arboretum - What We Do In Winter People often ask what we do here at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens during the winter months. The most important part of our winter work is keeping track of the Arboretum's collections through plant recording and mapping. We have to record accurate information on where each plant originated, when it was planted, how it was nurtured, and exactly where it is located in the Arboretum. There are over 12,000 woody plants at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens. Record keeping is a significant and crucial task.

We were fortunate to receive a generous grant from The Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust two years ago that has enabled us to convert our mapping from paper to a computer database.

This conversion project brings us up to modern botanical garden standards. Keeping up with records in the computer database is good work for cold winter days. Labels for each plant with both Latin and common names are created during the chilling winter months as well.

some of the garden areas. In a bleak winter landscape, one can often see more clearly what may need reorganization or rethinking.

In the winter garden, we do a lot of pruning: suckers, water sprouts, and crossing branches must be removed. We prune or cut back late blooming shrubs that form buds on new wood.

What other kinds of tasks do we do? Even in the winter, 1 ½ miles of trails must be cleared every day either of leaf debris, snow, or ice for the safety of our visitors. Our paths are now resurfaced with Porous Pave thanks to generous grant funding from the McLean Contributionship and the Mars Foundation.

Snow removal with plows, snow blowers, and shovels on the parking lot, at times, seems perpetual! Again, the safety of our visitors is our paramount concern. Winter also gives the Arboretum staff a wonderful chance to reassess or sometimes design or redesign

On snowy winter days, seed catalogs are poured over to make the best selections early.

Reading and research are important parts of planning for spring. We must know the histories and natural habitats of plants in the collection or those we are considering so that the optimal growing conditions can be determined before actual planting time arrives in spring. In the shop, all hand tools are sharpened, oiled, and organized.

Maintenance is done on all power equipment including mowers, chain saws, and other power tools.

In the greenhouse, plant propagation is ongoing. The horticulture staff is busy scarifying or cleaning seeds and rooting cuttings. Did you know that the reason a seed is encased in a protective covering is that inside the casing there are inhibitors that keep the seeds from germinating at the wrong time of the year. Once the seeds are removed from the casing (or in some situations once the casing is punctured), they can be planted in soil and the seeds will germinate. Much of the work we do in winter in the greenhouse is propagation from seeds.

The Chanticleer Story The Chanticleer estate dates from the early 20th-century, when land along the Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad was developed for summer homes to escape the heat of Philadelphia. Adolph Rosengarten, Sr., and his wife Christine chose the Wayne-St. Davids area to build their country retreat. The family's pharmaceutical firm would become part of Merck & Company in the 1920s.

Adolph, Jr., bought his sister's portion of the estate following her death in the 1980s. He didn't move into the main house, but used it for entertaining and kept it as it was when the family lived there. The house is open for

tours by reservation. Adolph, Jr., left the entire property for the enjoyment and education of the public following his death in 1990. A nine member Board of Directors, six of whom are Rosengarten relatives, oversees The Chanticleer Foundation. The garden opened to the public in 1993. There are 19 full-time staff, of whom two manage facilities and 13 are gardeners and groundskeepers.

The Rosengartens hired architect and former classmate Charles L. Borie to design the house, which was completed in 1913.

Landscape architect Thomas Sears designed the terraces as extensions of the house. A 1924 addition converted the summer home into a year-round residence and the family moved here permanently.

Mr. Rosengarten's humor is evident in naming his home after the estate "Chanticlere" in Thackeray's 1855 novel The Newcomes. The fictional Chanticlere was "mortgaged up to the very castle windows" but "still the show of the county." Playing on the word, which is synonymous with "rooster," the Rosengartens used rooster motifs throughout the estate.

Salt Alternatives For Treating Icy Sidewalks & Dirveways Spreading rock salt (sodium chloride) on roads and driveways reduces ice formation, allowing for safer travel for pedestrians and motorists. Too much salt, however, can corrode metal on cars, damage gardens and trees, and pollute our local streams. All landowners can be part of the solution by using alternative products or by using salt at recommended times and rates.

There are several products that can be used instead of salt. Here are a few options to consider: Sand, clean kitty litter, and used coffee grounds - These products provide great traction. Sand can easily be swept up and disposed of afterwards, but kitty litter often creates mushy clumps. These products will absorb sunlight, contributing to melting and will not harm nearby plants and soil.

Ashes - For those with a wood burning fireplace, ashes are a great option. They provide a lot of traction and absorb sunlight, so will melt ice quickly on a sunny day. And they're free!

Beet juice - Increasingly being used by highway departments on its own or mixed with salt, this safe and natural product

allows ice to melt even when air temperatures are extremely cold.

Remove as much ice and snow off paved surfaces as you can before applying salt to speed up melting

Potassium acetate, calcium magnesium acetate - Acetates are super-effective even at extremely low temperatures and are biodegradable. The drawback? Price. They cost several times as much as rock salt and can be difficult to find. This is a good solution for small areas in environmentally sensitive locations, such as floodplains.

A little salt can go a long way: Rock salt should be applied at about a handful per square yard Calcium chloride should be spread even thinner, about a handful for 3 square yards The air temperature matters. Rock salt is fiveo times more effective at melting ice at 30 F than 20oF, and ineffective below 20oF. Calcium chloride is better for temperatures down to 0oF.

Other "chlorides": calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride Rock salt (sodium chloride) is not the only chloride product that can melt ice. These other products are generally more expensive than rock salt, but work better at low temperatures. Calcium chloride is the preferred choice over magnesium chloride, as it works at lower temperatures and is applied at a lower rate, leading to less chloride in our streams. Potassium chloride is considered safest for pets and plants, but is often more expensive and does not work well at lower temperatures. All chloride products contribute to pollutant loads in our streams and their use should be minimized.

FACT: Stormwater runoff can pick up chemicals, debris, dirt, and other pollutants that will contaminate our water. It is a common misconception that stormwater is treated before it reaches the waterways.

Why do People Die Shoveling Snow?

National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely.

There is no end to the terms for "really big snowstorm," and those terms came in handy, particularly during the 2014-'15 winter.

Nationwide, snow shoveling is responsible for thousands of injuries and as many as 100 deaths each year.

So, why so many deaths? Shoveling snow is just another household chore, right?

Tali Guy's Recipe Page Chicken with Oranges

Ingredients: 1 chicken cut into 8 1 cup of orange juice 4 strips of orange peel (discard of the white pith) 1 orange cut into slices with the peel 1/3 cup honey 4 tabs olive oil 1 tabs sliced garlic 1 string rosemary Red chili pepper flakes - to taste 1 tsp paprika Salt and pepper - to taste

ORANGES by Tali Guy Oranges grow in a sub-tropical or Mediterranean climate, and thus they come to our area from Florida, California and other distant places. Winter is their peak season.

The most popular types are Valencia for juice and Navel for eating. Oranges may be kept in room temperature for a few days. Otherwise, refrigerate for about one month.

Salads with Oranges: You can add orange cubes to any leaf salad. Bitter leaves, such as Belgian endive, radicchio, arugula and Romaine lettuce, may be a great contrast to the orange's sweetness. To emphasize the sweetness and crunch you may add dried cranberries and walnuts. Toss the salad with vinaigrette dressing.

Ingredients: Peels of 2 navel oranges 1-1/2 cups sugar 3/4 cup water Preparation: Choose navel oranges with thick peel. Scrub well with soap and water.

Peel and cut the peel into 1/3" strips.

Put the orange peels in a pot. Cover with cold water and bring to a boil. Pour the water out. Repeat 3 more times.

Cook the sugar and water in a pot until the sugar melts. Add the orange peels and cook for 30 minutes or until they look transparent.

Remove the peels, separate between them and dry on plates. You may roll them in sugar or dip one end in melted chocolate.

Let dry in open air for several hours.

Peeling an orange: The easiest way to peel an orange is to cut of the top and score it all around into quarters. Peel each quarter by pulling it from the cut off top down.

Preparation: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

In a baking dish put the chicken, orange juice, orange peel and slices, honey, olive oil, garlic and rosemary. Sprinkle on top the pepper flakes, paprika, salt and pepper.

Cover with aluminum foil and close tight.

Roast for 30 minutes, uncover and continue for another 30 minutes. Baste the chicken every 10 minutes when uncovered to prevent dryness.

Dog Training: Stop Begging at the Table A dog begging while you are trying to enjoy your meal can be an annoying behavior.

However, it is very common and can be easily fixed. Keep in mind that rewarded behavior will be repeated, so it is important not to give your dog any food from the table, as it will encourage the begging. Although your dog may whine, bark and give you puppy-dog eyes, stay strong! It's possible you've never given your dog table scraps, but that won't stop your dog from wanting it!

Here are some other ideas to make mealtime beggar-free:

Teach your dog to go to "place" during meals.

Whether that assigned place be a bed or mat, lure your dog to it and reward them for just touching it at first. Place a few small, tasty treats on the mat and let your dog find them. As your dog investigates by sniffing, toss a few more on there. Then reward with more treats for your dog lying down on the mat. Your dog will eventually see that lying down on a specific "place" will get them yummy treats!

Have your dog lie calmly at your feet during meals.

Another option is to teach your dog to lie at your feet so that they are still close to you.

To begin this behavior, use something your dog really loves that will last awhile. Hook your dog's leash on and simply step on it so that it is only long enough to sit or lie down comfortably, but not long enough to allow your dog to jump on the table or your lap.

With either option, the most important rule to remember is always ignore the unwanted behavior and reward the behavior you want to see repeated. When you ignore the bad behavior, your dog will learn that there is no reward and won't be as enticed to keep repeating it. Thank you for your excellent question! Artist Series at Newtown Public Library Newtown Square Library Welcomes Priscilla Bohlen's Beautiful Art, & Heart, throughout February!

Public Library this January and February and the proceeds from every sale will go to feed poverty stricken, suffering children via the charity "Stop Hunger Now!*" How did she make this decision? This accomplished artist walked into an interview for her art show at Newtown Square Public Library, learned about a prior artist's donation,** and immediately offered to contribute the sale of her entire exhibit!

Priscilla's art is a wonderful mixture of different genres and mediums from realism to abstract forms and from watercolors to acrylics. But all her works study the effects of light, colors, and shapes. One watercolor that received an award from the Delaware Valley Art League was particularly challenging. She related why:

There was such precision in the shadows and lines all done in that mysterious early morning light which occurs along the seashore. There is a lot of geometry in this study of

several homes. And of course, any mistake in a watercolor ruins the entire piece. It took about a week to complete, but was worth the time...people seem to enjoy it."

Other vibrant works in mixed-media acrylics show off her creative, colorful approach. "I like taking a theme and working through a series of pieces which all relate to one another. Sometimes I use a resist method a technique reminiscent of batik in clothing.

You start with a baseline of colors on a canvas, let them dry, and then carefully drip threads of rubber cement from above to establish your pattern. Subsequent coats of paint are applied, and when the glue is finally removed, it reveals the original base.

The abstracts have amazing, fun layers of color and shape.

Priscilla gains inspiration from many subjects. "Key West Cat" is a showpiece of whimsical beauty, and was inspired on a trip to Florida. And several brilliant florals came from a visit to Colombia, South America.

Why are some people exceptionally generous? It is not their position in life, or their culture, or politics. It is the satisfaction they derive from helping others - even if it involves sacrificing their time, effort, or items they love. Compassion and munificence have amazing rewards.

Artist Series at Newtown Public Library Like many artists, Priscilla paints with several friends once or twice a week. Fortunately, they have been given the use of a large sunroom in a local retirement community for their work.

There are huge windows on three sides, and we paint in this gorgeous space with wonderful light. In exchange, we hang art shows in their sitting room, and switch them every two months. The staff and residents at the community are wonderful, and there is a real feeling of camaraderie among us. The residents express interest in the art, and feel it enriches their environment. We may even offer a small class next year. It's a win-win.

Craft Page: Magical, Magnetic Snowman To make this magical, magnetic snowman all you need is a clothespin, acrylic paint, paint brushes and a stippler (optional): 1. Paint a clothespin with white paint.

2. Add three dots on the lower half in orange, red or black (using a stippler).

3. Next add eyes, mouth and brows in black.

4. Paint on rosy cheeks in pink or blush.

5. Add a carrot colored nose.

6. Add a white highlight to the eyes.

7. Using ribbon, tie a scarf around the mid section.

8. Hot glue a piece of magnet on the backside of the clothespin.

9. Place your snowman on the refrigerator or other metal surface.

Optional uses: 1. Tree ornaments Make a dozen snowmen with different expressions, colors and scarfs. Try using the miniature clothespins for variation. Omit the magnet from the back and add a string for hanging.

2. Dinner place cards. Cut a black shaped hat from construction paper and label with the guest's name using a white paint marker.

3. Food markers for dishes at your next get together with friends.

4. Decorate packages with your snowmen or add to a winter door wreath.

Working to End Domestic Violence Community Counseling Laurel House offers group and individual counseling for victims of domestic violence and their children, as well as for teens in violent dating relationships. Additionally, this department offers follow up services and a mentoring program for individuals and families.

24-Hour Confidential Hotline Laurel House’s hotline is available 24 hours a day by calling 800-642-3150. The hotline is answered by highly-trained staff and volunteers who will listen and provide support and resources.

Children’s Program Children’s Advocates in our Shelter and Transitional Housing programs provide structured recreational time, as well as individual and group services which are designed to help children heal from the trauma of living with, and witnessing, abuse. Parenting support is also provided as needed.
