Newtown Public Library Artist Series Newtown Square Library is delighted to host the Delaware Valley Art League's Plein Air Exhibit “Paintings of Garrett Williamson” Now Through December!

The Newtown Square Library is honored to promote an art exhibit which resulted from an admirable bit of cooperation between two local non-profit organizations: The Delaware Valley Art League (DVAL) www.delawarevalleyartleague.com and Garrett Williamson - which operates Garrett's Way Early Learning Center and Camp Garrett www.garrettwilliamson.org.

The plein air paintings were done by over a dozen professional artists from the Delaware Valley Art League - an association of 200 professional artists that promotes the fine arts and advances the skills and creativity of its members.

All the beautiful artwork features Garrett Williamson's 242-acre property. It showcases the variety of Garrett Williamson's uniquely remaining open space in Newtown Square from the farmland to the woods, to the historic mansion and barn which hosts a thriving 4-H program.

Garrett Williamson exists to create an environment where every child, regardless of their financial situation, has dynamic, high-quality, life-changing experiences using the historic property as their canvas for learning. GW was thrilled to host this premier Plein Air Event during Delco Arts Week - and the entire GW team loves the results on display at the library!

Newtown Library's Director, Arlene Caruso, offered her perspective on this collaborative show: “It is a pleasure to support a joint effort between two major non-profits in our community, and we hope to see many patrons enjoy the amazing art (and books) through the holidays.

Community Connections Harp Music for the Holidays at Newtown Square Presbyterian Church Harps and the holidays go together. The size may vary, from delicate lutes held in angelic hands - to 6 foot tall orchestral instruments.

But they all create inspiring, celestial sounds.

Some say this is because when they are plucked, the sound doesn't bounce off anything (like the neck or body of a guitar) it simply resonates throughout the atmosphere.

The sounds of harp strings will be wafting through the air of Newtown Square Presbyterian Church this Christmas season.

On December 15th at 10:00am, well-known harpist, Megan Landfair will be featured during the Christmas Cantata both as a soloist, and accompanying the choir. The Cantata's theme is On the Road to Bethlehem and will include pieces like “Angel's Carol,” “What Child is This?,” “This Little Babe,” “The First Noel,” “How Far Is It From Bethlehem?”

“Behold the Stars,” and “The Little Road to Bethlehem.”

Then on Christmas Eve, everyone is welcome to our two services: the 4pm Live Nativity Service (all visiting children are welcome to participate too!), and our contemplative 8pm Candlelight Service of lessons and carols with string quartet and choir.

The non-stop commercialism and obligations of the holidays can drag one down during December. But music is a universal antidote for stress - so this year, let your spirits be uplifted. Listen to the harp, to the string quartet, and sing along with the choir - Oh Come, All Ye Faithful!

Stormwater Management Stormwater Runoff and Record Rainfall

Increasing rainfall has had a major impact on the region’s stormwater runoff, especially in older neighborhoods with less than ideal stormwater management systems. With no end in sight to the frequency of these intense rainstorms, there's more to consider.

When forecasters call for rain, more and more they warn of severe storms and flash flooding. These frequent torrential rain events are breaking daily rainfall records. The Philadelphia region saw its greatest two-day rainfall total for any June on record with 4.63 inches on June 19 and 20. In just a few hours' time, storms are inundating areas with 3 to 4

inches of rain. What's more, the ground is so saturated that infiltration is hardly possible even with an ideal stormwater management system in place.

So as each new storm brings reports of drainage issues that have never been seen before, we need to ask: Are these really new “problems” or are they the inevitable result of the record rain events that continue to overwhelm the region? There's something else to keep in mind. With extreme rainfall amounts, you have to expect extreme runoff.

While water flowing through your yard on its way to a stormwater facility is disconcerting, it's not a drainage problem. It's a system at work.

Township neighborhoods older than 10 or 15 years don't have nearly the same amount of stormwater design and infrastructure as newer developments. The pipes are aging and inefficient. Many designs used grading and swales, which over time become filled in and flatten out and are no longer able to assist in getting water to natural water courses. Unfortunately, there's no easy or inexpensive fix.

When The Waters Rise, Will You Know What To Do? According to the American Red Cross, flash floods are the No. 1 weather-related killer in the U.S.

What is Impervious Surface?

Almost half of all flash flood fatalities are vehicle related, according to the National Weather Service. If you're driving and approach a water-covered road, turn around. Just 6 inches of water can stall a vehicle, and 2 feet can float most cars, trucks and SUVs. Here are some other tips to stay high and dry: Floods are one of the most common weather hazards in the United States. They can happen anywhere at any time of year.

What is a Flash Flood?

Densely populated areas have a higher risk for flash floods than rural areas.

Flash floods can occur within minutes or hours of a heavy rainfall, and waters can rise as high as 30 feet or more. Even small streams and creeks can flood rapidly and cause damage.

Flash floods are usually caused by slow-moving thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service, "Flash floods are short-term events occurring within six hours of the causative event (heavy rain, dam break, levee failure, rapid snowmelt and ice jams) and often within two hours of the start of high-intensity rainfall.”

Flash floods can move homes and cars, uproot trees and destroy bridges. Because floods happen with little to no warning, residents in low-lying areas are particularly at risk.

Know your proximity to rivers, streams and dams During heavy rain, avoid underpasses, underground parking garages and basements Avoid hiking or camping if thunderstorms are predicted Develop an evacuation plan for your family Don't walk in water above your ankles; you can be swept off your feet in as little as 6 inches of rushing water Turn off the electricity and other utilities During heavy rain, Township storm sewers can become blocked with debris causing flooding in the street. In preparation of any rain event, Township crews do attempt to clean storm inlets to make sure they are able to collect water from the street. If you notice debris on top of a storm inlet before or after a storm, contact the Township immediately. If your roadway becomes flooded during a storm, call 911 immediately so emergency personnel can respond to close the road to traffic.

Impervious Surface- A surface that prevents the infiltration of water into the ground.

Impervious surfaces include, but are not limited to, streets, sidewalks, pavements, driveway areas, or roofs. Any surface areas designed to be gravel or crushed stone shall be regarded as impervious surfaces.

Impervious surfaces reduce the amount of rainwater that can be absorbed into the ground. When there is less ground for water to penetrate, it can quickly flow directly into stormsewers and creeks, increasing the likelihood of more frequent and more severe flooding. Additionally, pollutants are unable to penetrate an impervious surface. Rainfall may carry these pollutants directly into our waterways resulting in water that is unfit for wildlife or recreational activities.

Water runoff from an acre of paved surface is approximately ten to twenty times greater than an acre of grass. Materials such as crushed stone, porous concrete, and pervious pavers can provide various amounts of infiltration but are not considered 100% pervious.

To minimize the impact of water runoff, impervious surface coverage is limited to a maximum percentage per property, which varies by municipality. Any additional increase of concrete, brick, asphalt, etc. on a property may require a building permit prior to construction.

Many people do not realize how easy (and affordable) switching to renewable electricity can be. Here's what you'll need to know: You will still receive only one bill from PECO. Two ways to switch: PECO's Standard Offer, or Customize Your Plan.

FIRST OPTION:

PECO's Standard Offer: Quick, simple, cheap Try PECO's Standard Offer Program. Solarize: Helping homeowners go solar

Interested in rooftop solar but not sure how to start? Worried about the capital outlay? Solarize might be able to help.

Solarize is a grassroots-based collective program for implementing photovoltaic (PV) solar projects. First begun in Portland, Oregon, Solarize has expanded with support from the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar America Communities program. It can be run by residents in a township, residents in a neighborhood, or by other groups, for example, Solarize Philly is run by the Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA). A team from the Ready for 100 campaign has expanded this success to a larger region which included all of Southeast PA. (Ready for 100 is a drive to move municipalities to 100% renewable electricity by 2035, and 100% renewable energy by 2050.) The team, Solarize Southeastern PA, can do the initial assessments to know whether your home is a good fit for solar (i.e., does your roof get enough sun). If so, they calculate how much electricity your roof can generate and they help you estimate how much your system would cost. Once you decide to proceed, the real work begins. Solarize bundles together all of the potential solar customers from your community and then links those customers with a solar installer who works out the details of the installation and the exact costs. The larger number

of customers allows lower costs, as does the 30% Investment Tax Credit on your 2019 federal taxes (this credit decreases in 2020 and 2021 and then expires unless Congress decides otherwise).

Even if your home is not a good candidate for solar at present, Solarize can also suggest other solutions, both current and future, opportunities like community solar, where communities buy dedicated solar power generated elsewhere. The team also recommends ways to transition away from fossil fuels.

At all stages of the process for all inquirers, Solarize can answer questions and suggest ways to reduce electricity usage and your electricity bill. (PECO's energy audit program can also help.For $25, an energy expert will visit your house to identify changes you can make to save energy. The savings will likely be much higher than the $25 you spend on the energy audit.)

How Do We Best Address Teen Vaping?

A public health emergency upends years of progress.

After years of seeing the number of teen smokers decline, the rise of e-cigarettes and vaping (inhaling and exhaling of vapor produced by an electronic device) is leading to a substantial increase in use by teens.

What was initially touted as a healthier smoking cessation method for adults is having the opposite effect on teens.

Just this month, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to ban the sale of all e-cigarettes, and new laws went into effect in Colorado limiting e-cigarette and flavored tobacco use. Widespread concern over the impact on youth smoking have led to these legislative changes.

These trends are alarming because for the decade prior, teen smoking had actually declined, thanks in part to the success of edgy public education campaigns, aggressive anti-smoking policies, and overall tobacco use losing the social cachet and acceptance it once had. Unfortunately, nearly 80% of youth were exposed to e-cigarette marketing in 2016 according to the latest information available from the CDC, and increased sales have outpaced medical research and knowledge of the near- and long-term health effects of prolonged use.

There’s more we can do to eliminate disparities in how we regulate tobacco products, regardless of their delivery system.

Visit your local high school, and it’s obvious that teens are now vaping in record numbers. The 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey, which is funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration, shows e-cigarette use went up 78% for high school students between 2017 and 2018 alone.

Teens are now more likely to use e-cigarettes than other types of tobacco products. The Monitoring the Future survey, conducted by the University of Michigan, also found that nicotine use by high school students via vaping has nearly doubled.

Not all e-liquids or vape juice contains nicotine, but even without it e-cigarette aerosol can contain heavy metals and other potentially cancer-causing compounds.

Nicotine exposure during adolescence has been shown to be harmful and even increase the risk of potential use of other substances.

Vaping may also lead to conventional smoking, as National Institute on Drug Abuse has found that nearly a third of teen e-cigarette users begin smoking other tobacco products within six months.

The National Safety Council has addressed the public health impact of cigarette smoking by recommending six specific tobacco control measures, and a new policy to address electronic nicotine delivery system, or ENDS products, calling for additional regulations and raising public health risk awareness.

Many communities have been overwhelmed by the influx of teens who vape at school. At the 2018 National Prevention Network conference, public health advocates shared that some schools are starting to ban USB’s, as teachers can’t tell the difference between Juul devices (the most popular e-cigarette manufacturer on the market) and flash drives.

Media reports have indicated that schools go to extreme lengths to curtail use, such as limiting bathroom access, banning certain types of clothing that could be used to hide vaping devices, randomly testing

requiring child-resistant packaging for liquid nicotine containers, aiming to reverse an upward trend of accidental ingestion of e-liquids by children that were reported to U.S. poison control centers.

Parenting Corner Being Thankful

an excerpt from Andrew Mullen’s book Middle Schooled.

Hello Parents!

Last night I was cleaning up after dinner and listening to some country music. I started to pay attention to the words (as I scrubbed a pot with one of those smiley faced scratchy pads) and the theme I heard was about being thankful for what we have. The songs were about enjoying the moment and cherishing this time we have with our children. I think that scratchy pad started to look at me and it might have tilted it's head as if to say, “think about it”…

As a generous lather formed in the pot, I realized that I have not been slowing down enough to really pay attention to everything I have to be thankful for. The next day at school I watched the smiling and happy children enter the building. It reminded me how amazing these kids are and what a gift we all have. Let's take a look at a few ideas to help us all to be thankful. This can work for our children as well! Talk to them about it:

It's the small stuff. Do something nice for someone every day. Hold a door, compliment someone, smile. It all adds up.

Volunteer. Pay it forward. Everyone needs help once in a while.

Take a break. Take a moment to go for a walk, look at the clouds and think. Slow down!

New Tree Shopping Selecting trees and the root systems that nursery or garden centers offer.

Trees require commitment. Young trees grow twice as fast when chosen and planted carefully and they will live twice as long as trees planted carelessly. They require some attention in the first year or two, mostly watering and protection from deer and mower damage. While large, older trees are available from nurseries, they typically will not grow as fast as those planted at a younger age. Young ornamental (and fruit) trees are available in local garden centers and nurseries in three types of packaging bare root, balled and burlapped (B&B) and containerized. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

Bare root trees are just that. They are simply a branched trunk from 4 to 6 feet tall, with exposed roots at its base. They are not always readily available at nurseries and garden centers, but mail order nurseries offer them in a wide variety of species. They are very lightweight and easy to handle. They are also less expensive than young trees that are B&B or in containers. Bare root trees arrive with their roots wrapped in material to keep them moist and in a plastic bag for cool storage until planting time. Plant them in late winter or early spring while they are still dormant. To avoid planting too deeply, be sure the root flare at the base of the stem shows at, or slightly above, ground level after you put the soil in the hole over the roots. Bare root trees need staking for the first year or so to assure that they are stable.

The trees that many municipalities plant around town and those they offer to residents for tree planting programs are mostly bare root.

Help Stop the Invasion!

Balled and burlapped (B&B) trees are substantial. Their trunks are typically

6 to 8 feet tall. Their roots are embedded in a ball of soil that is wrapped in burlap and tied with string or surrounded by a wire cage.

They are commonly sold at nurseries, and also are available at some garden centers.

B&B trees can be fairly expensive because there are usually delivery costs included due to their weight. The advantages of B&B trees are that they are typically a bit bigger, you can plant them all year round if the soil is not frozen, and they generally do not need staking. However, planting them is somewhat more complicated because the burlap or wire must be at least partially removed and sometimes the root flare is covered by the soil on the rootball which also must be removed to establish correct planting depth.

The time to select and plant a new tree is always last year. This is especially true when one of your existing trees is in obvious decline. Do not wait until it dies to replace it.

Put its replacement in nearby now. It will be fully established and growing vigorously when you lose your old one. It is also true when you are contemplating a new landscape design. Get your trees in first and soonest and they will grow and thrive while you take your time developing the area around them.

Containerized plants are convenient.

The young trees are planted in potting medium in a nursery container. Available from about 6 to 8 feet tall, they are moderately priced and are relatively easy to bring home from the nursery or garden center. A great number of tree varieties are available in containers and they can be planted any time all year as long as the soil can be worked.

Planting containerized trees is relatively straightforward, but it is important to probe the potting medium before planting to be sure that the roots have not wrapped around themselves.Check to see if the root flare at the base of the trunk is visible. Tali Guy’s Recipe Page Fish Papillote The Fish Papillote is more of a technique than a recipe. It is actually a fish with vegetables wrapped in parchment paper and baked in the oven. This is a very healthy dish, quick to prepare and low in calories. Some people may be deterred by this French technique, because it involves cutting the paper and folding it in a very specific way.

We will simplify it and make it much easier to prepare.

Pick any fish you like, whole or fillet. Cut vegetables in various shapes. Color combinations will be appealing to the eye, as well as nutritious. Prepare herbs, either fresh or dry, such as thyme, basil, rosemary, etc. If

you have left over pasta, potatoes or vegetables, they may serve as excellent bedding for the fish.

Place some of the vegetables on the parchment paper and lay the fish over them.

Sprinkle salt and pepper and top with the remaining vegetables and herbs. To intensify the taste you may add garlic, olives, capers, chili flakes, ginger, lemon, vinaigrette, or any other taste you like. Add small cubes of butter and drizzle olive oil and white wine over the dish to enrich the taste. If you want to reduce the calories, omit the butter and oil and use the white wine and lemon juice instead. The fish will be steamed in its own juices. Close the parchment paper around the dish in the simplest manner, as if you are wrapping a present. Leave some room for the steam to develop and circulate inside.

Make sure the closure is as tight as possible.

Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. Do not open the oven while baking. The fish will be ready when the paper becomes a little brown and puffy.

There are many options for this dish. You may use aluminum paper rather than parchment paper. This technique is also good for shell fish, veal, and chicken breast. If you are using a frozen fish, extend the baking

time by 10 minutes. You may prepare the dish in various styles, such as Asian, by adding sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger, garlic and green onion, or Italian, by adding pesto, pasta and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. If you choose to do so, you can add vinaigrette or sauce and fresh herbs when you open the wrapping. Serve straight out of the oven.

Each diner will cut the paper open using a knife or scissors. The dish is usually personal, but you may prepare a large fish as a centerpiece for several diners. The aroma will come out of the trapped dish and fill the room.

Main Line Meals on Wheels: Helping Our Homebound Neighbors The heart of the philosophy of the Meals on Wheels program is that no homebound person should go hungry. The essence is just that simple. Our mission is to deliver nutritious meals to the aged, convalescents, homebound and handicapped persons who are unable to shop or cook for themselves, regardless of race, color, creed or ability to pay.

Many people have heard of Meals on Wheels, but are not sure exactly what we do or how we do it. Here are a few points: Some think we are a restaurant meal delivery service. While this is true in the sense that we do deliver meals, we are not connected to any restaurant, and are not geared towards providing “on demand” meal delivery. Our patrons sign up with us for reoccurring delivery (most on every week day), but we do have flexibility to deliver on a variable schedule, for example, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of every week.

Our daily meal delivery includes two meals: a nutritionally-balanced hot meal, a roll and butter, soup, a sandwich, fruit, dessert, and milk or juice. It is important to understand that, while we can accommodate many dietary requirements or preferences, the content of the meals we deliver is determined by the kitchens that supply us.

Some patrons are hesitant to ask for our service because they may be concerned about cost. In reality, we serve our patrons regardless of their ability to pay.

There is a modest cost for our meals for those who can afford it, but we do subsidize many of our patrons to either a partial or full extent.

Our service area is generally along the Main Line, from City Line Avenue on the east to Malvern on the west; note that this includes all of Radnor Township. We deliver every weekday morning, including holidays. Meals are delivered exclusively by volunteers. Our volunteer schedule is very flexible. If you would like to volunteer, please contact us.

One of the biggest- and ongoing- hurdles we face is identifying those who can benefit from the service we provide. The majority of our patrons are seniors, some of whom do not have internet access and therefore lack a way to search for programs that can provide food in their homes. Local hospitals and medical professionals generally know about us and often suggest us to their patients.

Family and friends are also a referral source.

We hope that the general public will think of us and speak up when they become aware that someone lacks the ability to provide good, balanced nutrition for themselves on an ongoing basis.

Main Line Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization. While the full charge for meals covers most of the expense for patrons who are able to pay, we largely rely on donations to subsidize meals for the others. It costs about $2,000 to pay for daily meals (five days a week) for one year. Or $1,000 for six months, or $500 for three months. We gratefully accept tax deductible donations.
