The Development of the King of Prussia Mall The development of the King of Prussia Complex was originally conceived in 1959.

The project was initially conceived by the developer as a discount community shopping center. It was originally developed as an open mall with two department stores, a Woolworth variety store, and a supermarket as anchor tenants.

The site consists of two parcels of land. The Plaza is built on a site consisting of approximately 92 acres and The Court is situated on a site of approximately 34 acres.

The condition of the soil on both sites was always a problem for the developer since the land consists of an underlying limestone belt and numerous "sink holes" are located beneath the land's surface which required extraordinary foundation design. In addition, two natural streams are located on the land now improved with the Plaza. The Court is a natural flood plain which required extensive soil replacement and relocation and enclosure of the stream flowing through the property.

In 1959, the Kravco Company, then known as the M.A. Kravitz Company, Inc., began planning a community shopping center on a site of approximately 30 acres at the northeast corner of US Route 202 and Goddard Boulevard. The Court at King of Prussia now stands on this parcel. The Kravitz Company secured commitments from E.J. Korvette for a discount department store of approximately 190,000 square feet (including a 30,000 square foot furniture and carpet store), as well as a 30,000 square foot unit of a regional supermarket chain. At that time, both these stores were successful retailers but both have since gone out of business. The development was designed as a typical community "strip" shopping center.

Acme. Finally, the Kravitz Company also secured an option to purchase an additional 36 acres to round out the entire tract.

With all land parcels under control, the developer relocated the shopping center to the Acme parcel and redesigned the architectural plans to provide for a configuration which included a combination convenience shopping center and an open mall. The development concept provided for three department stores, including E.J. Korvette, and J.C. Penney, and made provisions to include a third department store at a later date.

Zoning approval was obtained to support the project, however, a competitive supermarket, Acme Stores, owned approximately 96 acres on the other side of Goddard Boulevard. The developer negotiated an arrangement to exchange the original thirty acres for a parcel of like size owned by Acme and simultaneously purchased an additional thirty acres from

The Company secured a commitment from the John Wanamaker Company, on of Philadelphia's three dominant department store merchants, to locate a branch store in King of Prussia. In 1965, the new Wanamaker store opened in the Plaza in an attractive octagonal-shaped, free-standing building and became King of Prussia's first anchor tenant offering a full line of department store type merchandise.

The Development of the King of Prussia Mall

Wanamaker's entry into King of Prussia allowed the developer to plan a new twolevel, enclosed mall to be constructed around the J.C. Penney department store and by 1965 the developer was able to attract Gimbels to the center. The new twolevel mall connecting Wannamaker and Gimbels, with entrances to both the Penny and Korvette stores, opened in 1966.

By 1966-67, King of Prussia Plaza had grown into a true regional shopping center which consisted of both open and enclosed mall areas in a total of approximately 1,300,000 square feet of GLA (Gross Leasable Area) including some 140 stores offering a full compliment of retail merchandise and services. The open mall area remained quite popular with shoppers. For many years, sales volumes of the stores fronting on the open mall exceeded the volumes of the stores in the enclosed mall. The Plaza remained in substantially this configuration until 1980-81.

The original 30 acres of unimproved land which was conveyed to Acme in 1961 was still vacant on the opposite side of Goddard Boulevard, the ring road surrounding King of Prussia Plaza. By 1976, Bamberger's agreed to consider the development of a free-standing store opposite Goddard Boulevard on this parcel. The developer was able to acquire the parcel from Acme and began planning a new two-level enclosed mall to be built on the site and to be anchored by Bamberger's and a second department store.

Ultimately, Bloomingdale's agreed to join Bamberger's in the proposed new mall sponsored by Kravco organization. At the same time, management of Federated made the decision to locate one or more units of their Abraham & Strauss division in the Philadelphia area and selected King of Prussia as their first location.

This circumstance necessitated creating a plan providing for a three-department store mall with approximately 250,000 square feet of mall shops on two levels in a total complex

consisting of approximately 963,000 square feet.

The three-department store mall also necessitated the relocation of Goddard Boulevard, a public road, in an easterly direction and on land which was a paved surface parking area for the Plaza in order to permit the new mall buildings to fit on the relatively small (34 acre) site and thereby provide for more land area for the proposed mall. After an extended period of rather complex physical planning, traffic analysis, and other engineering studies with the township, state highway officials, and the department store merchants, the developer was able to accomplish the relation of Goddard Boulevard. The developer also obtained the necessary approvals to construct a bridge over the relocated road to provide for a physical connection between the two malls. This proved to greatly facilitate the flow of automobile traffic between the two centers. The developer also constructed an outdoor canopy over a sidewalk connecting the two centers to more comfortably accommodate pedestrian access between the two malls.

The Development of the King of Prussia Mall In 2012, the sixth anchor store in The Plaza (the former Wanamaker's-Strawbridge'sMacy building) has been demolished and is being rebuilt into a 100,000 square foot two story building of 11 larger format mall specialty shops, opening in October 2012.

An expansion plan to connect the Court to the Plaza through an enclosed corridor of 50 new shops and eateries was announced in November 2011 and opened in August 2016 Today, King of Prussia has seven anchor department stores and over 430 retailers and

restaurants. It is also the only location in the extended Philadelphia market for a number of high-end retailers including Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo, MCM, Diane von Furstenberg, Gucci, Hermes, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., and others.

King of Prussia Mall attracts over 20 million annually with tourists and out-of-market visitors accounting for an estimated 24% of the total. The mall has three parking decks, over 13,700 parking spaces and employs over 7,500 people.

Construction of the new mall, which was name the Court at King of Prussia, commenced in early 1980 and the mall opened in August 1981. Total project costs were over $70 million including the department store buildings and the parking garage. The garage cost over 11 million and is one of the largest parking structures in the eastern United States which was financed exclusively by private capital.

The new Court was an instant overwhelming success. It was over 80% leased at the opening to a well-balanced collection of fashion-oriented stores, and sales volumes were excellent from the beginning.

In 1983, Sears opened a new 215,000 square foot store at The Plaza, replacing Korvette's which had closed in 1982. A 140,000 square foot expansion of new mall shops, including a 25,000 square foot food court, also occurred at this time, making the total leasable area of the center 2,458,000 square feet.

Both the Plaza and The Court underwent an extensive $180 million renovation and expansion in the mid 90s. Lord & Taylor, along with 100 new high-end mall retailers, opened in 1995, and Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus opened in 1996. King of Prussia Mall expanded by 400,000 square feet to 2.85 million square feet of leasable area, becoming the second largest retail complex in the nation.

Dog Training How do I stop my puppy from pulling on the leash when we go for a walk?

Before we discuss correcting and preventative techniques, it is important to understand why your puppy is pulling on walks. One of the main reasons dogs pull on the leash is because they have a lack of focus on their handler. Puppies are especially prone to being easily distracted since everything is so new to them.

Bring high-value treats on the walk with you.

Using a treat, such as cheese or something you don’t give your puppy often, will help him/her be more driven to work harder for it. This will also help reinforce good behavior in the future.

Feed and praise for focusing on you.

Use the high-value treats as a reward or bribe if necessary. Over time, your pup will start to associate getting a tasty treat in exchange for his/her attention.

Limit the amount of leash your puppy has.

Giving puppies too much freedom encourages distractions and restricts your ability to have control. You should keep your puppy close. A good rule of thumb is to keep your pup’s head in line with your body.

Mark the inappropriate pulling behavior.

Quickly altering your direction while using your voice to attract your puppy’s attention will shift your dog’s focus back onto you. A simple command of “hey” or “no” is a sufficient way to achieve this.

Praise some more.

Once your puppy’s attention is regained, praise and reward the good behavior to show a job well done. Never praise a bad behavior, as this will confuse your puppy.

Be patient, repetitive and consistent.

Remember that puppies need structure and consistency in order to learn. You won’t see change happen in one day, but repeating the same routine and correcting the pulling will help make the learning process easier and more beneficial. Preparing for Winter Prepare Your Home for Winter

What Is Extreme Cold?

What constitutes extreme cold and its effects can vary across different areas of the country. In regions relatively unaccustomed to winter weather, near freezing temperatures are considered “extreme cold.”

Whenever temperatures drop decidedly below normal and as wind speed increases, heat can leave your body more rapidly. These weather-related conditions may lead to serious health problems.

Extreme cold is a dangerous situation that can bring on health emergencies in susceptible people, such as those without shelter or who are stranded, or who live in a home that is poorly insulated or without heat.

When winter temperatures drop significantly below normal, staying warm and safe can become a challenge. Extremely coldtemperatures often accompany a winter storm, so you may have to cope with power failures and icy roads. Although staying indoors as much as possible can help reduce the risk of car crashes and falls on the ice, you may also face indoor hazards. Many homes will be too cold—either due to a power failure or because the heating system isn’t adequate for the weather. When people must use space heaters and fireplaces to stay warm, the risk of household fires increases, as well as the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Exposure to cold temperatures, whether indoors or outside, can cause other serious or life-threatening health problems. Infants and the elderly are particularly at risk, but anyone can be affected. To keep yourself and your family safe, you should know how to prevent coldrelated health problems and what to do if a cold-weather health emergency arises.

The emergency procedures outlined here are not a substitute for training in first aid. However, these procedures will help you to know when to seek medical care and what to do until help becomes available.

Plan Ahead

Prepare for extremely cold weather every winter—it’s always a possibility. There are steps you can take in advance for greater wintertime safety in your home and in your car.

Winter Survival Kit for Your Home

Keep several days’ supply of these items: • Food that needs no cooking or refrigeration, such as bread, crackers, cereal, canned foods, and dried fruits. Remember baby food and formula if you have young children.

• Water stored in clean containers, or purchased bottled water (5 gallons per person) in case your water pipes freeze and rupture.

• Medicines that any family member may need.

If your area is prone to long periods of cold temperatures, or if your home is isolated, stock additional amounts of food, water, and medicine.

Emergency Supplies List:

• an alternate way to heat your home during a power failure: - dry firewood for a fireplace or wood stove, or - kerosene for a kerosene heater • furnace fuel (coal, propane, or oil) • electric space heater with automatic shut-off switch and non-glowing elements • blankets • matches • multipurpose, dry-chemical fire extinguisher • first aid kit and instruction manual • flashlight or battery-powered lantern • battery-powered radio, clock or watch • extra batteries • non-electric can opener • snow shovel • rock salt • special needs items (diapers, hearing aid batteries, medications, etc.)

Although periods of extreme cold cannot always be predicted far in advance, weather forecasts can sometimes provide you with several days’ notice. Listen to weather forecasts regularly, and check your emergency supplies whenever a period of extreme cold is predicted.

If you plan to use a fireplace or wood stove for emergency heating, have your chimney or flue inspected each year. Ask your local fire department to recommend an inspector, or find one in the yellow pages of your telephone directory under “chimney cleaning.”

Also, if you’ll be using a fireplace, wood stove, or kerosene heater, install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector near the area to be heated. Test them monthly, and replace batteries twice yearly.

Your ability to feel a change in temperature decreases with age, and older people are more susceptible to health problems caused by cold.

If you are over 65 years old, place an easy-to-read thermometer in an indoor location where you will see it frequently, and check the temperature of your home often during the winter months.

Insulate any water lines that run along exterior walls so your water supply will be less likely to freeze. To the extent possible, weatherproof your home by adding weatherstripping, insulation, insulated doors and storm windows, or thermal-pane windows.

If you have pets, bring them indoors. If you cannot bring them inside, provide adequate shelter to keep them warm and make sure that they have access to unfrozen water.

Prepare Your Car for Winter

You can avoid many dangerous winter travel problems by planning ahead. Have maintenance service on your vehicle as often as the manufacturer recommends. In addition, every fall: • Have the radiator system serviced, or check the antifreeze level yourself with an antifreeze tester. Add antifreeze, as needed.

• Replace windshield-wiper fluid with a wintertime mixture.

• Replace any worn tires, and check the air pressure in the tires.

During winter, keep the gas tank near full to help avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines.

Beet and Carrot Salad

Fall is apple season. People who stay away from cakes will love this desert. It can be prepared ahead of time with the last step on the day of serving.

Many people don't like beets, however, they will enjoy this recipe.

This salad has a surprising taste. The beets are not cooked and the seasoning is sweet and sour. This salad enriches any meal with its taste and vibrant color.

Ingredients:

Peel the apples, cut in half and remove the core.

Butter a baking pan.

Lay the apples in the pan with the cut side downward.

Melt the butter in the microwave for 30 seconds and pour on top of the apples. Pour the butter over the apples. Add the rest of the ingredients, except the brown sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes until the apples become soft.

Take the pan out of the oven and turn the apples' cut side up. The preparation up to this point may be made ahead of time.

Prior to serving, sprinkle brown sugar on each apple. Broil for 3 minutes until it becomes golden. Watch carefully so it does not burn.

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Roasted Whole Cauliflower

Leeks is usually a side vegetable that enhances the taste of other ingredients. In this recipe, it is actually the main dish.

Ingredients:

The cauliflower in this recipe is served whole and becomes the star on the table. The guests will admire the beautiful presentation and be curious to taste it. The cauliflower is crispy outside and rich in taste.

Ingredients:

bunches of leeks. stick butter tablespoons olive oil teaspoon salt teaspoon black pepper sliced lemon

1 cauliflower 1 tablespoon salt 4 tablespoons olive oil

1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon paprika Thyme - optional

Preparation: 1. Put the cauliflower in a large pot with its core facing upward. Fill the pot with water until the cauliflower is covered. Add 1 tablespoon of salt. Boil for 20 minutes, or until the cauliflower is cooked, but not too soft. Stick a knife into the core to check when done. The knife should penetrate the core easily.

2. While cooking, prepare a baking pan lined with parchment paper.

Take the cauliflower out of the pot using 2 large serving spoons and lay in the pan.

3. Brush the olive oil on the cauliflower.

4. Add the 1/4 teaspoon salt, black pepper, paprika and thyme.

5. Roast at 400 degrees for 20 minutes, or until it becomes golden.

6. Serve whole with a knife to be sliced at the table.

Preparation:

1. Discard of the dark green leaves of the leeks. Cut the leeks in half along its length leaving 2" at the bottom. Hold the bottom in one hand and wash the leaves thoroughly under water flow to remove all the sand between the leaves.

2. Cut off the root and slice the 2" bottom into 2 halves.

3. Brush a baking pan with olive oil and lay the leeks in it. Dot the leeks with small pieces of butter. Drizzle the olive oil on top. Add salt and pepper.

4. Put the lemon slices on top and roast at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, or until it becomes golden.

Artist Series at Newtown Square Public Library Newtown Square Library Hosts Twenty-Four ADM Gallery Artists in November & December!

The Newtown Square Public Library will be impressively decorated during November and December as it hosts twenty-four artists from the ADM Gallery, including the owner,Ana Delia McCormack!

Of course, Ana Delia McCormack is well known to many residents.

Besides owning the Gallery and having a successful career as a professional artist, she is also a gifted teacher. And the Newtown Square Library is delighted to feature her wonderful students in this special exhibit.

How does Ana inspire and engage adult art students?

You have to be able to help and encourage people to express themselves, while giving them the guidance and tools to achieve their goals. The student’s perspective is vital, so I listen and often demonstrate what they are describing. We walk through an example that is an extension of their own vision.

And we always complete a successful composition.

Sometimes, very advanced painters with a degree in the arts are simply looking for another pair of eyes and an opinion they respect. Whatever the level of the student, I love and appreciate them all, and together, we get addicted to this wonderful process!

“All are wonderful artists who range in experience from beginners to professionals. They are a diverse but cohesive group, with different artistic styles: impressionists, abstract artists, and realists. And while the majority enjoy working in oils, others prefer to paint in acrylic or watercolors. One even uses a media called water oils!

Several are sophisticated, degreed painters who have been juried and accepted to show at different venues, like the Art League of Delaware County. Library patrons may recognize the professional works in this exhibit by Andrea Agresta, Ruth Ochia, Kathy Apfelbaum, and Nancy Bucher – all who have had their own shows here before.”

For example, I just finished a hillside in Manayunk. The mills and churches and houses they're all reminiscent of the past. In 1998, Craig left her career in nursing administration to pursue her passion for painting on a full-time basis. Valley Forge National Historical Park News Park Battles Invasive Species th on the 100 Anniversary of the National Park Service!

This August, the National Park Service celebrated its 100th anniversary - and festivities are going on all year long in many National Parks. But beyond the celebrations, our parks are struggling against invasive species encroaching on these precious environments. The invaders can be both flora and fauna - and Valley Forge National Historic Park, one of the most beloved landmarks in Pennsylvania, is fighting everything from rusty crayfish to Japanese stiltgrass.

When this occurs, the "alien" plant or animal will often have no natural population controls such as predators, diseases, or pests because none in the new area are adapted for its presence; thus, the term "invasive" is applied to these types of organisms as they "invade" the habitats of native species. Some may also have allelopathic properties, meaning they alter their surroundings by changing the soil chemistry or emitting toxic chemicals that inhibit the growth of others.

vegetative community dominated by plants that cannot be utilized by local animals.

Valley Forge Park battles multiple invasive species, but here are just three prominent examples: autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata), tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima), and Japanese stiltgrass (Microstigium vimineum). Each comes from a different part of the world, and each has been introduced to this region in a variety of ways. They spread rapidly, making them costly and difficult to control.

Non-native, invasive plants and animals are some of the world's greatest conservation concerns. As knowledge and technology advance, humans intrude into previously uninhabited areas, and increase construction in established sites. This expansion is natural and necessary for the advancement of our kind, but it impacts our environment in ways that may not be obvious. Humans travel more frequently and farther into wilderness areas nowadays, which increases the likelihood that these seeds or sentient species get introduced into pristine environments.

Like all animals, people have the ability to perpetuate the distribution of plants through seed dispersal - whether by passive or active means. Nearly everything we do has the potential to passively spread organisms; seeds get stuck in mud on vehicles, bikes, or hiking shoes; moving firewood carries seeds and insects; ingesting seeds when eating fruits or vegetables causes us to deposit

Autumn olive was introduced from Europe as a supplemental food for wildlife due to its vigorous ability to produce its namesake fruit. It is a shrub that grows quite large and becomes very thick, allowing for its use in natural livestock fencing. Here are three tips on how to help control invasive species: No matter what your outdoor recreational pursuit may be, take the time to clean your gear as thoroughly as possible both before and after you plan on visiting a new place.

Firewood should only be collected and burned in the areas from which it actually grew.

Wash your outdoor power equipment such as lawn mowers, tractors, chain saws, or ATVs before transporting them to the next job or recreational site.

Japanese stiltgrass was traditionally used for packaging materials. It is not a tree or shrub but has allelopathic properties which change the soil to be unsuitable for other plants, often resulting in decreased species diversity.

Tree-of-heaven is from the Middle East and was introduced for aesthetic reasons. It has a beautiful purple flower but its wood is very soft and unusable for most wood products.

Like autumn olive, its invasive properties cause it to suppress other more valuable timber trees.

Millions of dollars, countless labor hours, and a large amount of research are used to control non-native species, especially in areas of special conservation like our National and State Parks, Forests, and Wildlife Refuges. Comparatively little invasive species control occurs in residential and industrial areas, and as a result, visitors are prone to carry these species into our conservation areas. New Youth Director at NSPC Newtown Square Presbyterian Church Welcomes New Director of Youth & Family Ministries: Sara Boninu!

What makes over 70 children want to come to church? Newtown Square Presbyterian Church is figuring that out. For many young people, it's about fellowship with their friends, learning about their faith (or their parents' faith), fun activities and great snacks.

But now, there's an amazing new reason to join their friends at church - Sara Boninu! Sara began her Youth and Family Ministry in September, and has already enchanted the congregation everywhere from the pulpit to the playgrounds. Why is everyone so enthusiastic about Sara?

Members, non-members, and friends are always welcome to join in on the fun. Other Children's Programs include: Weekly Sunday School during worship at 10:00 A.M. (pre-k through 8th grade classes) Youth group on Sunday evenings at 7:00 P.M. (6th-12th grade) Kids' Night Out every 2ndthSaturday of the month (pre-k through 4 grade) First Sunday Night Social every first Sunday of the month (5th grade-12th grade)

Mission projects A Retreat in Ocean City, NJ, November 1820th. Children will spend the weekend in worship and bible study, as well as play football on the beach and have a scavenger hunt on the boardwalk.

Members and non-members are invited to participate.

The Christmasth Eve Pageant on Saturday, December 24 at 5:00 P.M. Children pre-k through 8th grade bring the story of the nativity to life! Rehearsals start Sunday, November 27th immediately after the worship service. Everyone is invited to participate.

In just a short time, she has initiated a slew of exciting events for the youth: like the First Sunday Night Social. Every first Sunday of the month, students in 5th-8th grade participate in a social event that creates fellowship outside of the church. They've played laser tag and gone ice skating, and are looking forward to many more activities.

Sara Boninu started out in Texas, moved to Virginia, recently graduated from Christopher Newport University in Virginia, moved to Newtown Square - and just got married! With all the changes in her life, how does she view her new role leading the youth of this growing church?

"My goal is to show the children and youth that church and Jesus are fun! When I was in youth group, I was taught that being a Christian is something to be proud of and one way to live out your faith is to be involved in a community of believers. I want the youth and children of NSPC to come to church with a smile and be excited about Jesus."

"My favorite part about youth ministry is that kids can grow in their faith without being perfect or having everything together. My favorite verse as Director of Youth and Family Ministries is: 1 Timothy 4:12: 'Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.' And our youth and children at Newtown Square Presbyterian Church are doing just that."

Here is how the service works: Getting to Know You: First there will be a "Getting to Know You" meeting. One of Surrey's highly experienced Care Managers will meet with you and any other family or friends you would like included to get to know you and understand your medical situation. This includes pertinent medical, living and other information.

Help When You Need It: After the initial meeting, Surrey can act as an advocate for you whenever needed. If you have an emergency or have to be hospitalized, you or the designated family or friend can simply call us, any time day or night.

We will ensure that you are receiving appropriate care. If you have a spouse at home that needs assistance, we can also arrange that care.

Arranging Follow Up Care: If you need any additional care after discharge we will arrange it--whether it is help at home or in a rehabilitation facility.

Coordinate the Important Communication: Surrey Care Managers will coordinate communication between you and health professionals (and any designated family or friend) and ensure that you are fully informed and understand your care.

The initial meeting and follow up calls are free. All other services are provided on a sliding fee scale.

Personal Attention to Your Needs: Having your own personal wellness team will give you and your family a sense of well-being and assurance that you will always receive the appropriate care.

Easy Christmas Ornaments With the holidays quickly approaching - here is a fun craft that the whole family can participate in making.

This is a great project for those rainy, (or snowy) weekends - Thanksgiving Day is no exception either!

1. Choose a flattened ornament rather than round because it will be easier to apply the paint.

2. Select an ornament finished with chalkboard paint.

3. Use a stippling tool to make dots on the ornament with decorative acrylic paint (we used white for the snowflakes and an antique white for the stars/shine).

4. For the snowflakes just use dots and any basic pattern.

5. To make easy stars, use a fine detail brush, and touch down at a central point and pull the paintbrush outward in all directions from the center. These stars are much easier to make than the traditional 5 pointed star and they look more natural.

6. Using a stencil brush, dab lightly in Mod Podge (all-in-one glue, sealer, & finish) and stipple onto the ornament. Make sure you apply a very thin coat to ensure it dries clear.

7. Wrap and give as a gift or simply hang them on your Christmas tree.
