MESSAGE FROM JULIE GOSSE, BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CHAIR As we enter spring and warmer weather in the Township, it is a natural time to think about transition - reflecting on where we've been and where we are headed.

infiltration, water quality, and flood mitigation project on Bair Road. Finally, we have new means for all residents to help limit the impact of water runoff with the establishment of a rain garden program, also funded by a Growing Greener grant, in which residents of Tredyffrin can apply to have a rain garden designed and built on their property.

While the pandemic pressed on and uncertainty swirled, our Township and citizens have continued to demonstrate remarkable resiliency and normalcy, and we have maintained our high quality of life.

As we've done so, we have supported our first responders - both our dedicated police department and the three volunteer fire companies that serve our community - to ensure continued public safety, fire protection, and emergency medical services for our residents. This support has included a recent (and first of its kind) joint commitment of $4.5 million in funding with Easttown Township to build a renovated fire station in Berwyn.

Longer-term solutions, though, will require sustainable funding and careful prioritization. A critical step will be to identify funding mechanisms to support the long-term goals of the Township. We have started financial discussions including community participation through two public workshops. We are excited to be moving forward and eager to engage with the community as we take action for our future.

We have made big strides to protect our local and global environment, including switching all Township-owned buildings to 100% renewable energy beginning this coming fall. We are also renewing investment in our local community resources, such as through an upcoming revitalization of Wilson Farm Park funded by over $1 million in State grant funding and Township matching funds.

Looking ahead, this next year will be vital.

Our Board will be making decisions that have great impact on the future of the Township and its overall well being.

Like the buried winter bulbs that are out of sight until they sprout in the spring, the hard work that has led to these and many other successes has happened over a long period of time, and often beyond obvious sight. It takes the collective effort of many individuals, paid staff as well as numerous volunteers, to make this Township what it is.

Reflecting on the input of residents as organized by the Stormwater Task Force, we have initiated several projects and will be engaging engineering consultants to help develop a prioritized project plan going forward. For instance, we are beginning designs for a flood reduction project at Woodcrest, Willis, Upper Weadley, and Harwick Roads. We were also awarded a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection grant under the State's Growing Greener program for an TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP

Together, we are taking actions to keep our Tredyffrin community a wonderful place to live. I look forward to a bright future for Tredyffrin Township.

At the center of many of these conversations will be the challenge of stormwater management. Over the last 12 months, multiple storm events have dropped over 1-month worth of rainfall in less than a day and caused extensive flooding and damage to public and private infrastructure, residential homes, and businesses. Many of us are directly feeling the impact of stormwater, and we are all contemplating how we can work together to solve this increasingly severe problem.

While no solutions can come fast enough, we are taking concrete steps to tackling our stormwater problems now and are planning for the longer-term needs for funding and projects in the future.

We recognize Township staff for their hard work and dedication and extend our appreciation on behalf of the community.

Our Public Works Department provides consistent and responsive work to keep our roads clear and our community safe. Our Engineering Department, central to the progress on stormwater, works tirelessly for our community in many other capacities as well. The Howellville Road Bridge replacement project serves as an example accomplishment by this team. We also thank the many volunteers on our various boards and committees who are willing to share their time and energy.

FINANCE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE On February 28th, I gave a presentation to the Board of Supervisors on “Strategic Funding Options”. With so many appeals for funding, selecting a funding alternative is imperative. This Joseph Dirocco process has been Asst. Township Manager months in the & Finance Director making and moving forward will have the potential to make a generational impact.

The Board, through this process, has identified the desire to make a significant impact with stormwater response, such as, flood reduction and meeting the stringent requirements of our MS4 program (as required by PADEP). They have also identified the desire to address future funding needs for Public Safety, which includes our Police Department and the three Fire Companies that serve the Township. We have also identified the need for funding of Capital Reserves, Other Post Employment Benefits (OPEB) Trust, and to stabilize our contribution into the Police Pension Fund.

For Public Safety, the Township has already committed $3.15M to Berwyn Fire Company for their new fire station on Bridge Avenue. Long-term, the Township is looking to again collaborate with Easttown Township to fund a permanent sub-station for Berwyn Fire Company near their current sub-station location. In addition, the Township is always looking to increase funding to cover operating and capital needs of all three fire companies. There is also the potential to add additional staffing in the Police Department on top of ensuring they stay well equipped.

Identified in our 2022-2026 Project Capital Plan is $9.4M of unfunded projects, most of which are stormwater related. In addition, there is another $2.3M of identified vehicles and equipment that need funding other than the General Fund over that same period.

Our OPEB Liability currently sits at approximately $17M, and we have approximately $12M in our OPEB Trust.

Finding a way to fully fund our OPEB Liability will have a significant impact on future Operating Budgets, as it will reduce the $1M+ impact that retirement health has currently.

INSPECTIONS & PERMIT SERVICES We all love trees. Part of the reason we live in this area is because of the bucolic setting that it provides with its tree lined streets. Many of the trees are quite large and quite old and yet they are still beautiful and provide the shade and serenity we are looking for on our properties. However, the Code office receives many, many phone calls regarding trees on residential properties so let's take the time to talk about trees and tree maintenance.

The options that I presented to the Board and public in February, include Bond Funding, implementation of an Earned Income Tax, a Stormwater Management Fee, and the Sale of our Sanitary Sewer System. Each of these options presents a unique way to fund our short-term and long-term obligations. The Board is keenly aware of the impacts any selection will have which is why they hosted two additional “special” meetings on March 7th and April 4th to garner as much public input and feedback as possible.

I look forward to helping implement the funding strategy that the Board of Supervisors chose at the April public Board of Supervisors meeting.

The Tredyffrin Township Code states: Minimum requirements for building exterior and outside premises.

A. Outside premises. All outside premises, whether occupied or vacant, shall be kept free of unsanitary conditions and of all nuisances and any hazards to the safety of occupants, pedestrians and other persons utilizing or exposed to the premises.

Unsanitary conditions, nuisances and hazards include, but are not limited to, the following for any outside premises: (1) Vegetation, defined as: (a) Excessive weeds. (b) Hedges, trees, shrubs or other vegetation that obstruct the approach sight distance of any highway, street, driveway, traffic signal, traffic signal sign or crosswalk.

If a tree is located on your property, it is YOUR tree. You are responsible for the care and maintenance of that tree. If there are branches or large limbs that hang over a neighbor's property or the street, you need to make the arrangements to trim it back so that is does not create danger to your neighbor, your neighbor's property, or drivers on the road. You could be liable for any damage or injury the limb might cause if it falls.

Finally, establishing an additional source of money to stabilize the Minimum Municipal Obligation (MMO) for the Police Pension Fund would also have a positive impact on the operating budget. Currently, our MMO fluctuates based on an actuarial valuation that is completed every 2 years. Market fluctuations have a significant impact on the budget, so establishing a “Pension Stabilization Trust” would help offset the impacts of a down market on the MMO.

(c) Dead and dying trees and limbs or other natural growth which, by reason of rotting or deteriorating conditions or storm damage, constitute a hazard to persons in the vicinity thereof.

Trees shall be kept pruned and trimmed to prevent such conditions.

POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS Promotions At the February 28th Board of Supervisors meeting, Chief Mike Beaty, Captain Tim Brown, and Lieutenant Tyler Moyer announced the promotions of several officers in the Police Department. Corporal Kreg Isleib was promoted to sergeant and Officer Josh Smethers was promoted to corporal in 2022.

In 2020 and 2021, promotions were done but, due to COVID, they were not done in person. Chief Beaty also presented those

Traffic Division by Sergeant Kreg Isleib The Traffic Unit would like to remind everyone about Pennsylvania's Move Over Law. The law requires drivers approaching an emergency response area to safely merge into a lane farther away from the response area. If a driver is unable to safely merge into a farther lane, they are required to pass the emergency response area at a speed of no more than 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit and reasonable for safely passing. An emergency response area is where an emergency vehicle has its lights flashing or road crews or emergency responders have lighted flares or posted signs.

As the weather warms, motorists will see more cyclists out on the road. Please remember that motor vehicles must allow 4 feet of distance and travel at a careful and prudent speed when overtaking a bicycle.

HISTORICAL COMMISSION

This is a good time to meet your Commissioners - a group of men and women who have interest in the “good old stuff” in the Township: homes, commercial buildings, railroad stations, bridges, protecting the heritage.

Greg Reif: I have always been someone who is naturally curious about the area I live in and think more people should have this perspective about their communities.

Being a long time resident of the Philadelphia area including central Bucks County and now along the Main Line living in Wayne, it's easy to be curious when we live amongst such rich history. This curiosity, paired with an educational background in urban planning from my time as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech's College of Architecture and Urban Studies is the backdrop for my participation on the Historical Commission. Our focus on bringing some of this history to the public consciousness is a foundational part of what we are trying to accomplish on the Commission. When we appreciate and understand where we live, we are more likely to protect and preserve our community. The roads and neighborhoods we travel everyday have unique and interesting stories to be told. Why is it called Wilson Farm Park or Cassatt Road?

Why do they call that neighborhood the Shand Tract? Who was Anthony Wayne and did he really partially inspire the creation of the famous Bruce Wayne/Batman character? These were prominent people and stories from our past that I think are important to share and/or at least to keep my wife and young children entertained.

Pearl M. Nudy: For a long time, I have been very interested in historic preservation because I live in an area of the Country where kings, presidents, and military generals have lived and visited, and important battles have taken place nearby. In their wake, this area has been left with historic homes, buildings, bridges, and so much more, all of it having great stories to tell. Saving those precious resources is important to me, not simply because I live here, but so do my children and grandchildren; as do my neighbors and their children, and maybe even their grandchildren. The people I see at church, the supermarket, and elsewhere - we all live in this great place: Tredyffrin Township!

led me to study and work professionally in urban design and engineering, building design and city planning. All five of the homes over my life were chosen because of their age, architectural qualities and setting, and any changes I undertook were compatible with and enhancing to the original design. I hope, as a member of the Commission, to assure Tredyffrin's history and historic resources are appreciated, touted, and protected.

Beth Specker: A love of history was instilled in me from an early age. Our family vacations were to Williamsburg, Boston, and Mt. Vernon. My favorite books were history novels and biographies. My career has involved history and civics education. Serving on the Commission will allow me the opportunity to combine my passion and experience to give back to the community that has been my home and ensure that the rich heritage of Tredyffrin Township will continue for generations to come.

Rob Williams, Chairman: My wife and I moved to Strafford in 1993 for the same reasons as many others - good schools and low taxes. Only later did I discover Tredyffrin's history like family spelling bees at the Old Eagle School; discovering quirky ruins from a past era. These remind me of childhood days being driven to historic locales along the East Coast - landmarks such as Gettysburg and my parents' antiquing in Lancaster. Books also captured my imagination such as Eric Sloane's beautifully illustrated Diary of an Early American Boy and An Age of Barns. I can trace those drawings to my later engineering studies. In 2005, we moved to my Tredyffrin historic house built in 1910 by noted architect Charles Barton Keen, who designed Radnor's Willows and Newtown Square's Aronimink Golf Club.

system that was a novelty of the time. A lifelong appreciation of beautiful old buildings moved me from being a history amateur to Chair of the Historical Commission.

Alison Andrell, Secretary: Some of my best childhood memories involve walking with my mom every weekend to historic Downtown Lancaster, which was about a half mile from my home. I'm grateful for those moments because I quickly gained an appreciation for the arts, local history, and architecture. Fast forward to today where I work for a commercial real estate firm that helps shape and revitalize communities. I love using my creativity to tell stories and create excitement about places and culture. I also use that creativity serving on the Historical Commission where I am leading the marketing efforts to advocate for the preservation of our Township's history.

Josh Talley: Like many of us in Tredyffrin, we tend to stay here awhile. I moved to the Township in 1984 and have witnessed the area change and evolve over the decades.

Living so close to Valley Forge National Historic Park, I developed a deep appreciation for the historic area in which we live. Only later in life though did I come to realize how steeped our Township is in the history of our Country and the wonderful treasures that exist within the Township. These factors led me to join the Historical Commission with a goal to promote the many historic resources that exist here.

Now that you have met us, keep an eye on Township news for information regarding the Chester County Village Walk in Chesterbrook on July 28. This will be so much fun and is months in the making!

And if you see any of your Commissioners along the path, introduce yourself. We would like to get to know you, as well.

JONES LOG BARN LIVING HISTORY CENTER Center Officially Opens To The Public

What is the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”? In the case of the Jones Log Barn Living History Center rebuilding project, “It took a community to raise a barn.” A journey to save and rebuild the historic Jones Log Barn started twenty years ago and on Sunday, April 3, 2022, the completed Living History Center officially opened to the public.

In her opening remarks, Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust president Pattye Benson, thanked all who helped make the Jones Log Barn Living History Center possible, in whatever way. Additionally, she offered a heartfelt thank you to the volunteer efforts of all the current and past Trust board members for sharing her vision for the Jones Log Barn, stating, “Thank you everyone who helped make my dream a reality.”

The historic preservation work of the Trust and the building of the Jones Log Barn Living Center was only accomplished

with the unwavering support of generous donors and time and talents of passionate advocates and friends. The Trust is grateful for the encouragement and collaboration from its partners in history, including Valley Forge National Historic Park, Miller Design Works, Frens & Frens Architects of West Chester, Scott Walker of Axe Handle Timber, Duportail House Board of Directors, Tredyffrin-Easttown Historical Society, Radnor Historical Society, Tredyffrin-Easttown School District, and Tredyffrin Township.

Speakers for the Living History Center grand opening included Stacey Ballard, President/CEO of Eadeh Enterprises of Berwyn, PA State Representative Melissa Shusterman of the 157th District, Chester County Commissioner Chair Marian Moskowitz, Chester County Planning Commission Chair Michael Heaberg, and Tredyffrin Township Board of Supervisors Chair Dr. Julie Gosse. It is important to have township and community leadership who support historic preservation efforts.

inaugural display about the Fritz Lumber Yard, its history and the Eadeh family who donated historic materials from the red Fritz Barn for the project. In addition, a remarkable collection of antique farm tools and equipment generously donated by Fred and Lura Wampler of Wayne is included in the one-of-a-kind barn museum and gives visitors an insight into 18th century farm life in Tredyffrin.

Trust President Benson closed the grand opening remarks with, “We celebrate the Jones Log Barn's new life as the Living History Center and hope that it will inspire others to value their histories as foundations for their futures. For historic preservation to matter, and for our local history to be meaningful, it needs to be supported. By making this investment in our community's rich local history, the Living History Center enhances the work of Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust to preserve and present Tredyffrin Township history in a meaningful way.”

The Jones Log Barn Living History Center is open 1-3 PM every Sunday, April through October, free of charge. Other times throughout the year with prior arrangement.

In 2019, the Township used 1,992 Mwh of electricity. This is equivalent to the electricity use of 192 residential homes.

For heating and cooling, the Township uses almost 3.6 million cubic feet of natural gas, which is equivalent to heating 58 residential homes for one year.

Clean Energy Transition Plan In September 2019, the Board of Supervisors signed a Clean Energy Resolution with the main purpose to move away from the usage of fossil fuels for electricity, heating, cooling, and transportation. The Township has a role to play in this transition. To give the resolution substance, the Clean Energy Committee of the Environmental Advisory Council decided to join a consortium of 16 municipalities to write a Clean Energy Transition Plan. Neighboring townships who joined the consortium were Uwchlan, West Bradford, West Chester, West Vincent, Whitemarsh, West Pikeland, Pocopson, and Schuylkill. The consortium met on a weekly basis and learned about specific clean energy topics, such as energy efficiency, electric cars, and solar energy.

Lastly, the Township's vehicle fleet consumed 44,716 gallons of gasoline.

Assuming that an average gasoline car drives 25 miles per gallon, this equates to driving almost 45 times around the globe.

The energy usage was then converted into energy emissions. Energy emissions are expressed in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent or MTCO2e. MTCO2e is the metric used to describe the emissions from greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Because these gases have different global warming potentials, they are converted and aggregated into a single metric, MTCO2e.

The Township's energy usage from Figure 1 is translated in Figure 2.

The plan focusses on the Township government and changes individual stakeholders such as schools, non-profit organizations, businesses, and individual residents need to move to a clean energy future. A baseline provides an energy inventory for both the Township and the community, which contains an overview of the types and amounts of energy used, the annual cost, and the pollution it causes.

The background information is important, as it shows the areas of focus in reducing emissions, and also helps monitor progress.

emissions. The installation of solar on the Township Building's roof to produce electricity onsite would make this choice an even more powerful one. It would also increase the Township's energy resilience.

In 2018, the Board of Supervisors took an important initiative by joining the Regional Streetlight Program, which was coordinated by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC).

DVRPC took the lead and ensured bulk purchase of the LED lights as they were combining purchasing power with a large group of the other townships and boroughs resulting in lower costs for each township. The project will result in future financial savings. The DVRPC calculated that the emissions for the use of public lighting be reduced by 382 MTCO2e annually.

Exploring and implementing more energy efficiency measures for Township buildings is an ongoing process. Furthermore, the number and type of electric vehicles is

OPEN LAND CONSERVANCY Awarded Accredited Status

One of Tredyffrin's best kept secrets just achieved a couple of major milestones, and it's time to make the community more aware of the jewel in our midst.

What is Open Land Conservancy (“OLC”, or “The Conservancy”)?

OLC is a land trust that, since its founding in 1939, has been fulfilling a mission to preserve and sustain open space for public enjoyment and wildlife habitat. It is managed by a Board of Directors, and sustained by the efforts and contributions from its members - all volunteers.

Where is Open Land Conservancy today?

The last 80 years have seen OLC retain its focus on the Tredyffrin community in the Valley Creek watershed. Its volunteers worked determinedly to assure that owners and developers saved as much land as possible for open space, and now OLC's properties span the western part of the Township, shown on the neighboring map.

OLC President Mac Wilson says, “Today's residents owe a great debt to generous families that followed Ms. Robinson, such as the Lorimers, Maes, Millers, Tolands, and others, and to the County and Commonwealth for generous grant support for land purchases. OLC was the very first recipient of a Growing Greener grant for its acquisition of the Cedar Hollow Preserve.”

How did Open Land Conservancy get started?

Back in 1939, there was no Pennsylvania Turnpike or US202 expressway, and Tredyffrin was primarily a farming community. But Lydia Moncure Robinson of Paoli had the foresight to see the need for conservation of open space, and she donated 65 acres on the South Valley Hills to the then-named Chester County Horticultural Society.

What is a land trust?

A land trust is a charitable organization that owns land or holds conservation easements to achieve one or more conservation purposes. Those conservation purposes may include protecting natural habitat, water quality or scenic views, or ensuring that the land is always available for farming, forestry or outdoor recreational use. Land trusts make sure that the land they care for is properly conserved and brings benefits to the community in perpetuity. Most land trusts are independent, private charitable organizations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code. A Board of Directors, drawn from the communities the land trust serves, is responsible for the actions of the land trust. All of this is true for OLC. Notably, Tredyffrin Township has no responsibilities for OLC, although it is an important and valued partner.

How do land ownership and conservation easements work?

A land trust may own land directly (“fee ownership”) and/or it may hold conservation easements, which are binding agreements to limit the use of land in order to accomplish conservation benefits.

In those cases, the property owner retains ownership of, and responsibility for, the land and is free to use it within the agreed constraints. Donations of land or easements may be considered charitable deductions by the IRS. OLC has both kinds 24

How does the Conservancy manage its land?

OLC depends on its volunteer Board of Directors, a wonderful and dedicated group of volunteers, and many community group projects. Each Preserve has one or two managers, and professional service companies and volunteers cut the trails and remove hazard and fallen trees.

Regular volunteer programs help to control, and in some cases eliminate, invasive species, and groups such as the Eagle Scouts, pictured here, have been instrumental in projects that enhance the visitor experience in all Preserves. Board members provide essential professional, legal, accounting, land stewardship, etc., expertise, and the Conservancy would be delighted to welcome more to join. ...continues on page 26

Those Conservancy Milestones and where Next!

#1 - Accreditation! OLC has long been a part of the National Land Trust Alliance and Pennsylvania's equivalent (WeConservePA).

Those groups, plus friends at the much larger Natural Lands Trust and Brandywine Conservancy, provide invaluable guidance on professional standards and practices.

Now, OLC's adherence to those standards and practices has just been confirmed by the award of Accredited status by the LTA.

Accredited land trusts protect more than 79% of all land and easements held by land trusts in America. The accreditation seal offers the assurance that OLC can keep the promise of perpetuity and that it is worthy of the public trust. The application was a two-year process that required a thorough analysis and documentation of OLC's policies and procedures. Board member

said, “The Accreditation application process required significant effort by the entire Board of Directors, but the result is well worth it. We now stand on equal footing with the largest land trusts in the country in the way we maintain our preserved properties and in how we steward our financial resources.”

#2 - A New Preserve! Valley Creek is the lifeblood of the Conservancy, so the donation of 10.6 acres of high-quality undeveloped land at the very headwaters to the creek in Charlestown and East Whiteland Townships is an important development that allows OLC to partner with them to further protect the watershed. The Conservancy worked on the project with donor Rob Kendig for a decade and is very grateful for his generosity and patience. Readers can expect more information in coming months as OLC develops an access and management plan. #3 - A New Look! The Conservancy is marking its 80 years and its recent milestones with an initiative to better

If you've ever walked the trails at Valley Forge National Historical Park, you've no doubt noticed a striking historical building sitting empty and quiet on the Grand Parade. That's the Maurice Stephens House, built in 1816 on the site where Brigadier General Jedediah Huntington was encamped with his troops during the winter encampment of 1777-1778.

Used over the years as a home, a farm, ranger dormitories, park offices, and even a nature center, the house has been vacant since the mid-1990s.

that, and is preparing to turn the house into a much-needed gathering spot and café, as well as the new headquarters of the VFPA.

The VFPA is in the midst of a capital campaign to raise $980,000 for the project, which is a partnership with Valley Forge National Historical Park.

Trail users and history buffs alike can rejoice! The historic building will receive sorelyneeded repairs to bring it back to life and share the Valley Forge story through exhibits and programs. Visitors who find themselves thirsty on the trails will now have a place to refresh themselves along the way. JENKINS ARBORETUM & GARDENS Native Azaleas

When we think of azaleas, we often picture evergreen shrubs sporting bright pink blooms at the start of spring. Most of the azaleas we see in our own yards and neighborhoods are the offspring of plants from Asia. But did you know that we have our own native azaleas? Unlike their Asian counterparts, azaleas from the eastern United States are tall, airily deciduous, and flaunt the most exquisite yellow, redorange, pink, or white flowers, many of which are fragrant and bloom into summer.

There are 16 species of deciduous azaleas native to the East Coast and all but one (Rhodora - Rhododendron canadense) thrive here in the Philadelphia region. Keep reading to learn more about four of our favorites, all of which you can find growing at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens.

Pinkshell Azalea (Rhododendron vaseyi) is the first of the native azaleas to bloom in the spring, with delicately spotted pink flowers. It is incredibly rare in the wild, growing in bogs, thickets, and forests in only four counties in North Carolina.

Despite its rarity in the wild, it is quite easy to grow in garden settings and provides a welcome dapple of color in early spring for the home gardener.

Pinxterbloom Azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides) was once prolific in this region and can still be easily found while hiking here in Pennsylvania. The lightly fragrant flowers are typically soft pink, but can be nearly white or even lavender, blooming slightly before the emergence of new leaves in spring. The common name of this species is not a reference to its color. Instead, the name “pinxter” translates to “Pentecost” (the seventh Sunday after Easter) in Dutch and refers to this species' bloom time in the northernmost reaches of its range.

Pinxterbloom opens much earlier than Pentecost here in Pennsylvania and is an easy-to-grow showstopper.

Swamp Azalea (Rhododendron viscosum) has relatively small, clove-scented, white flowers tinged with pink, blooming in late spring after the leaves have expanded. The name “viscosum” is derived from “viscous”, meaning “sticky” a reference to its sticky, hairy, tube-like flowers. It is a fairly common species and can be seen growing in the wild from Maine to Florida, westward to Texas. As its common name suggests, this species grows best in wet woods, but can tolerate less wet sites with a generous layer of mulch or shredded leaves.

Plumleaf Azalea (Rhododendron prunifolium) is the latest blooming of all the native azaleas, with orangey-red flowers displayed in mid to late summer, well after other azaleas have thrown in the towel. It is quite rare in the wild and may soon be considered an endangered species.

Plumleaf azalea generally grows in wooded ravines, along streams, and in mixed forests in the wild, so a site with afternoon shade on your property will help to prolong the bloom period.

This is just a sampling of the incredible and breathtaking diversity seen in our native deciduous azaleas. To see these magnificent native azaleas in person, be sure to visit Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens, where more than 1,000 native azaleas are happily thriving.

If you decide to add one of these amazing plants to your landscape, remember that all of them are happiest when planted in moist, well-drained, acidic soil with partsun to dappled shade. Full morning sun is ideal, but most of them would suffer in the intensity of midday sun. Drainage is important too, so loose, highly organic soil is recommended, along with a covering of woodchip or shredded leaf mulch. As with most shrubs, don't forget to water regularly and thoroughly until they are established. Many of these azaleas can be purchased at local nurseries specializing in native plants, including the Plant Shop at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens.
