E-NEWSLETTER Tredyffrin offers monthly updates about Township news and events via the e-newsletter. Voting 2020 See You At The Polls On November 3rd!

Mail-in Ballot Information

Deadline Alert: If you plan to vote by mail-in ballot in the 2020 GENERAL ELECTION, your completed application must be received in the Chester County office by 5 PM on 10/27/2020. Your voter ballot must be received in the Chester County election office by 8 PM on 11/3/2020.

A late application will not be accepted, even if it was postmarked before the deadline.

How do I apply for a mail-in ballot?

2020 is a presidential election year and, like all years, it is important for you to vote on Tuesday, November 3rd. Take advantage of this important civic responsibility now that you have turned 18 (or even if you may be a bit older than that) and exercise your right to vote. Registration is handled at the County level and you can find information about voter registration in Chester County on their website at www.chesco.org. You can also call Voter Services at 610-344-6410.

General Election Voting Information Polls are open on election day from 7 AM to 8 PM. Last day to register to vote: October 19, 2020 The deadline to register to vote is now 15 days prior to an election, rather than 30 days.

Option 1: Apply for a Mail-in Ballot Online Apply Online at VotesPA.com/ApplyMailBallot. Registered voters can apply for a mail-in ballot online with a valid PA driver's license or photo I.D. from the PA Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

Option 2: Apply for a Mail-in Ballot by mail.

Step 1: Complete a paper mail-in ballot application. Download and print a mail-in ballot application.

You can contact your county election office directly to request a paper application.

OR You can contact the Department of State to request an application by emailing ra-voterreg@pa.gov or calling 1-877-VOTESPA.

Step 2: Mail your application. Send your mail-in ballot application to the county election office. The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot is one week before the election.

Other ways to request a mail-in ballot

Apply in person at the Chester County Voter Services. Once your county's ballot is finalized and available, you may request and promptly receive your mail-in ballot.

Citizens Police Academy 20thAnnual Tredyffrin Township Citizens Police Academy

local fire department, community policing , and guest speakers from the District Attorney's office and other cooperating agencies.

The Tredyffrin Township Police Department is proud to announce that we will be hosting our 20thAnnual Citizens Police Academy.

The program was created to give people from the community a closeup view into how the Tredyffrin Police Department functions and the vast array of services it provides.

Attendees are provided the opportunity to come to the police department once a week and learn about various topics.

Classes will be held every Wednesday evening, 7-9:30pm for 12 weeks commencing September 16th, 2020 at the Township Building, 1100 Duportail Road.

The program is designed to increase understanding between citizens and police officers through training and open communication. This is an excellent program bringing together the community and the police department through mutual understanding. By participating in this program, citizens promote community involvement which is the most powerful force any law enforcement agency has in the fight against crime.

There are a number of social distancing and safety protocols, as well as operational changes, that we will be asking you to follow while in the libraries.

Please limit inside visits to 45 minutes (or less). Spaces will not have chairs or tables for use at this time and we encourage you to use the libraries for browsing collections and checking out materials, picking up holds and using library PCs only.

All meeting and study spaces will remain closed. No public gatherings of any kind will be permitted in those spaces.

Due to the size of Paoli Library, safe social distancing is difficult, so patrons are also asked to register to come in and browse the collection. Browsing is limited to 2 patrons each half hour.

Marylyn E. Calabrese, Ph.D., writing coach and teacher, has generously volunteered her time to help students work on their essay writing skills while the library is closed. Dr. Calabrese is the former chairperson of the Conestoga High School English Department. Her educational background includes an A.B. from Bryn Mawr College, an MAT from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in Teaching Writing from the University of Pennsylvania. For rising seniors only, Dr. Calabrese is available at no charge for those who want to get started on their college application essays. She has helped thousands of students in preparing successful college application essays!

Wharton Esherick Museum Exploring the Wharton Esherick Museum from Home

Nestled in a wooded hillside on Horseshoe Trail in Malvern, the hand-built home and studio of Wharton Esherick may not seem like a place to search for online resources and virtual learning - but it is! Throughout 2020, staff here at the Wharton Esherick Museum have continued to develop and expand our website, finding new ways to bring Esherick into the homes and classrooms of those eager to learn about this icon of American craftsmanship.

Collection Highlights - a database of celebrated Esherick works in our collection; Online Resources for Educators - a compilation of resources for college and university audiences and adult learners of all kinds, which features primary source archives, writings on Esherick, and an Esherick bibliography; and At Home Activities - a series of fun, educational activities designed with both K-12 teachers and families in mind. These fun prompts appeal to a variety of ages, from designing your own studio with Organic Architecture for high school students to a compare-and-contrast game for elementaryage students. Full lesson plans for teachers can be found on our website too.

In the spirit of their collaboration, try finding your illustration first and write a story based on it! Start by taking a look at our list of suggested woodcut prints (available on our website). Esherick's woodcut, “Ships Struck in the Storm”, is one example from this list.

Story and literature are integral to Esherick's work. He had early success as an artist creating woodcut illustrations for books. It may seem safe to assume that the writing existed before Esherick's illustrations, right?

Not always! When working on his first book, Rhymes of Early Jungle Folk (Marcy, 1922), Esherick and writer Mary Marcy often exchanged poems and woodblock illustrations. At times, she would provide him with a poem, and he would create an illustration. Other times, he would give her an illustration and she would create a poem.

EAC - Taking Care Of Your Trees You know that trees are good for the environment. Maybe you chose your home partly because of the trees, but now you may be replacing trees that were lost due to storm damage or construction. Help your trees thrive and maximize their ecological benefits by following these tips.

Planting trees

The right tree for the right site. Take time to learn about what trees work best in your soil.

Look up information about any tree you consider planting: Is it suited to your type of soil? Will it thrive with this area's usual amounts of rainfall? What about the tree's mature size? Don't plant a tree that will grow to 90 feet near your house or to power lines!

Early care ensures good survival. Tree Tenders cites two major reasons for failure of young trees to get established: Planting too deeply, and watering too little. For detailed video guidelines, go to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Tree Tenders Youtube videos, 'Planting a Container Tree' and 'Planting a Bareroot Tree'.

Planting too deeply. A tree trunk ends in a root flare. The root flare should be above the soil line. Soil (or bark mulch) piled against the trunk of the tree encourages surface roots instead of the deep roots the tree needs. Even worse, microorganisms, insects, and burrowing rodents will attack the cambium, or nutrient-carrying layer, of the tree trunk if soil is piled against it. Root structure is made to be in contact with soil; trunk structure is not.

Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) recommends watering with at least 10 gallons per week (up to 15 in a city situation where much of the soil is covered with pavement), preferably delivered slowly to the base of the tree. If it rains, you might be able to supply less extra water. Check the soil to be sure. And, if there's a warm spell in the winter, be sure to water your new tree.

Ongoing care

Care throughout the life of the tree is important for maintaining the tree's health.

Follow these pointers for ongoing care of a tree: Mulch correctly, skip the lawn under the tree, and protect your tree from deer (and weed whackers).

Yes to mulch, no to mowing! It's important to keep the soil below the tree moist and uncompacted. Mulch in the form of shredded leaves or roots (no dye, please!) helps control weeds, keep the soil moist, and maintain the structure of the soil. As the mulch breaks down, it feeds the soil as well.

Say NO to Mulch Volcanoes! Go for a walk in the woods. Notice how trees grow in the wild. They never have 'volcanoes' of soil or mulch mounded around the trunks! Keep the mulch AWAY from the trunk of the tree! See the warning against 'planting too deeply' above. Mounding mulch around the trunk is as bad as planting too deeply.

Protect trees from deer. In our area, young trees must be caged to protect them from deer. Saplings will be browsed if they are not caged or sprayed with deer repellant. Older trees, up to about five inches in diameter, attract bucks looking for a good place to rub the velvet off their antlers. Buck rub can result in so much bark damage that it kills the tree.

Give your new trees a good start and continue providing the basic care needed to ensure that they contribute to the beauty of your property and to your property's environmental value.

Watering too little in the first two years.

Yes, we live in a climate with adequate annual precipitation, but it may not fall when your tree needs it! A transplanted tree has probably suffered some damage to the tiny roots that bring in moisture and nutrients.

You need to make sure the soil stays moist during the first two years, while the tree rebuilds a healthy root system. The 12

Don't put your leaves out on the curb! Use them as mulch under your trees, shrubs, and on your perennial beds. Here's how: When leaves fall, rake them onto the lawn and run over them with a mower (NOT a tractor mower). Your mower may even have a mulch plug to help grind up the leaves. Then, rake the leaves to where they can serve as mulch. You can rake the leaves onto a tarp and drag them to where they are needed to save labor.

PHS recommends the 3-3-3 rule for proper mulching: 3 inches away from the trunk, no more than 3 inches deep, and extend the mulch to about 3 feet out from the tree.

(For mature trees, you can even mulch out to the 'drip' line - the extent of the branches, which is the likely extent of the roots as well.)

You can also add the shredded leaves to your compost pile and use the composted leaves in the spring. However, keep some leaves in their shredded state on your property. Many butterfly and moth larva over-winter in leaf mulch. If you remove it or compost all of it, you may reduce the number of beneficial insects on your property.

What about having lawn under the tree? As PHS says, 'Say No to Grass!' Turfgrass is not natural in our area, and it requires heavy input of chemicals to be kept green. Those chemicals damage the soil in ways that make it harder for trees (and other plants) to grow.

Gardening & Landscaping Enhancing Your Fall Garden

Autumn is a great season for admiring and bolstering the life in your garden. The shortening daylight hours signal leaves to begin their transition from lush, summer green to cooler hues of reds, oranges, and yellows. Dropping temperatures encourage the flora and fauna to slow down in preparation of winter dormancy and hibernation. A gardener's work, however, is never complete. This is an optimal time for cherishing the newly painted landscape and continuing garden improvement projects.

Planting

Autumn is also a great time to expand your gardens and extend the bloom time. Cool air temperatures, moderate moisture levels, and adequate heat

Outside of the aster family, species such as Southern blue monkshood (Aconitum uncinatum), bottle gentian (Gentiana andrewsii), Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), and Great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) add a variety of flower types, textures, and colors that will brighten your garden as the temperatures begin to drop. After the plants are in the ground, remember to thoroughly water and mulch them to provide ample opportunity for successful growth.

As September rolls in, we notice the subtleties in the changing color palette of the trees. Our home gardens also start to cycle through and slow down, giving us an opportunity to admire the season's hard work. The timing of this leaf color change is determined by the reduced hours of sunlight. The brilliance of the color change is then influenced by climatic factors, such as moisture and temperature.

Wetter conditions and cooler nighttime temperatures allow for a longer period of color change, while sunnier days make for a brighter color.

In Southeastern Pennsylvania, peak fall color is typically enjoyed in mid to late October.

Certain deciduous trees are known to have a brighter display of fall color, including red maple (Acer rubrum), sugar maple (Acer saccharum), and blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica). Additionally, there are a few deciduous conifers that join in the show and drop their needles in the fall. This includes bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) and American larch (Larix laricina), both of which turn a beautiful, golden yellow. Some plants have a rather unique lifecycle in which they are blooming as the leaves are changing color. This anomaly can be seen in the Franklin tree (Franklinia alatamaha) and some deciduous azaleas including Rhododendron x 'Weston's Innocence'.

Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens is home to an accredited collection of rhododendron and azaleas.

These plants are most often thought of as providing striking colors when blooming in the spring, but many also have notable features in the fall. Some species, such as the Encore azaleas, even have a second bloom time as many other plants are beginning to drop their leaves.

Once the leaves have fallen, they can still be of use.

Chopping them up with a lawn mower and raking them into garden beds provides habitat for beneficial insects and organic matter for the soil. As they are broken down by bugs, the leaves return nitrogen and phosphorous to the soil, acting as a slow release fertilizer that helps improve soil health. Walking

retention in the soil provide an ideal window for planting herbaceous and woody plants. These conditions reduce the potential for drought stress and insect predation on the plants and are far more comfortable to garden in than the midsummer's heat.

When deciding which species to add to your home landscape, it is important to be honest about the light, moisture, and space that you can provide.

These factors will influence the continual maintenance required as your garden grows. At Jenkins, we focus on supporting plants native to the eastern United States. These species have an evolutionary history that lends them to being adapted to their surrounding conditions, so they require minimal maintenance once established.

Native plants also support the local wildlife by providing food and shelter for birds and insects.

If your goal is to add more late summer and early fall blooming plants to your garden, you may want to consider planting those in the aster family. While they vary in size and color, most plants in this family have a composite flower head that is made up of dozens of smaller flowers. This creates a dense display of color that will last through September and sometimes even October. Species such as blue wood aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium), smooth aster (Symphyotrichum laeve), and aromatic aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) are examples of individuals that will grow in a variety of conditions and bloom through early fall.

Planting goldenrods is another way to extend the seasonality of a garden by adding tall bursts of orange and yellow. They are also in the aster family, and species such as autumn goldenrod (Solidago sphacelata 'Golden Fleece'), zigzag goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis), and flat-top goldenrod (Euthamia graminifolia) grow in a contained fashion and provide nutritional nectar sources for bees through September.

Once pollinated, plants that bloomed in the spring and early summer will transition to the next phase in their lifecycle and begin to set seed. Leaving these herbaceous stalks standing in your garden can provide additional visual interest and food sources for native birds. Some species with particularly showy seed structures include the native strawberry bush (Euonymus americanus), Eastern wahoo (Euonymus atropurpureus), and red buckeye (Aesculus pavia).

Furthermore, collecting seed from your garden and sowing it through the winter is a cost-effective way to grow your plant collections and prepare for (photo by Harold Sweetman) Strawberry bush planting in the spring. This Euonymus americanus seed can be done in a variety of ways, the simplest being to use an old milk jug as a small make-shift greenhouse.

Even though the days are growing shorter and the temperatures are cooling, there are many different aspects of your gardens to enjoy throughout the year. Each season is an opportunity to enjoy a variety of plants while preparing your gardens for the next phase of their lifecycle. We encourage you to explore the life in your own garden and tune into the everchanging natural world.

Historic House Tour

COVID-19 FORCES THE CANCELLATION OF 16TH ANNUAL HISTORIC HOUSE TOUR

Innovative Fundraiser to Complete Jones Log Barn Living History Center Project The saying goes, “If walls could talk what stories they could tell''. Held annually since 2004, the Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust arranges for these stories to be told on its annual historic house tour. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Trust president, house tour chair, and historic homeowner Pattye Benson announces the cancellation of the 16th Annual Historic House Tour.

A much-anticipated community event and its largest annual fundraiser, the historic house tour is a signature event for the Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and educating the community about local historic and cultural resources. Through ticket sales and tour sponsorships, the annual historic house tours have benefitted the rebuilding of the Jones Log Barn as a local living history center and community education programs and raised $35K in 2019.

In its place, the Trust is conducting its first-ever “As History Goes On” nonevent fundraiser scheduled on the original 16th Annual Historic House Tour date of September 26, 2020.

Patty Benson explains, “To avoid serious public health risks, regrettably, we had to cancel our very popular annual house tour and the well-attended house tour preview party, which served as an opportunity for the Trust to thank the house tour 18

participants, sponsors, and local elected officials for supporting historic preservation and making the annual historic house tour possible.

Along with the Board of Directors, we know our house tour guests and preservation enthusiasts are disappointed to hear about the 2020 house tour cancellation. The annual house tour is a consistent community favorite and the Trust's leadership will miss seeing everyone”.

Benson adds, “Our disappointment today does not dampen our ongoing mission for completing the Jones Log Barn Living History Center, providing an amazing space for sustainable, historic education programs, inviting the public to visit, and hosting future Trust events. With the help of the community, the Living History Center will welcome visitors in 2021 and provide a glimpse into the stories and experiences of our past.”

Held annually since 2004, the historic house tours have featured 113 different historic homes including seven Revolutionary War headquarters, fourteen barns, five churches, three schools, including two one-room schoolhouses, two general stores, two springhouses, several historic playhouses, one library, an arboretum, a mill, and the Wharton Esherick museum.

Historic preservation supporters and house tour enthusiasts are encouraged to donate to the 2020 “As History Goes On” fundraiser on behalf of Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust at www.tredyffrinhistory.org.

Through the generosity of many individuals and local companies, the rebuilding of the Jones Log Barn is nearing completion. The final phase to be completed by the end of 2020 includes barn lighting, an upper level entrance ramp, construction of a wall in the lower level of the barn utilizing original sliding doors from Fritz Lumber Yard, and interior educational programming.

Rebuilding Of Jones Log Barn Nears Completion

The Jones Log Barn (circa 1730) was one of the oldest, intact log barns in the MidAtlantic region. Its rare architecture and unique history made it eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and it was certified as a Chester County Historic Resource in 2004. The barn is unique, not only for its age and its contributions to Pennsylvania history, but also for its architecture.

The Jones Log Barn stood next to British Major General William Howe's headquarters in Berwyn, Tredyffrin Township, for over 250 years. However, due to benign neglect, the deteriorating barn posed a liability to its owner and faced an estate-ordered demolition in 2000. The Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, dismantled the barn and stored the historic logs and other barn materials in Valley Forge National Historic Park, while funds were raised for its rebuilding.

The Trust is reconstructing the Jones Log Barn on Adams Drive in Chesterbrook on the site of an earlier barn and it joins General Duportail's Quarters and the Federal Barn, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Utilizing original barn logs stored in Valley Forge National Historic Park, repurposed historic materials from the Fritz red barn in Berwyn, and new logs where required, Scott Walker of Axe Handle Timber is rebuilding the centuries old log barn.

Much of the Jones Log Barn rebuilding project is complete, including the stone foundation, log structure and forebay, doors and windows, guttering system, siding, cedar shake roof, and its flooring. In the next few months, the remaining work includes the barn lighting, upper level entrance ramp, a lower level wall utilizing original large sliding 20

With construction affected during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trust is pleased to report that the Jones Log Barn project is now back on schedule with completion anticipated by the end of 2020. The vision for the barn's future use as a Living History Center is close to becoming a reality.

In addition to highlighting historic log barn construction, other anticipated uses of the History Center may include: Living history and special programs for residents, local school students and visitors; Cooperative programs with nearby Valley Forge National Historical Park in addition to other partnerships; Permanent and changing interactive exhibits demonstrating its role in the early history of the community and its role in the American Revolutionary War. Health Corner Back to School Safety for Hands and Arms

The start of the new school year brings an increase in many activities that can cause injuries to hands, wrist, arms, elbows and shoulders.

Here are some tips for keeping kids safe while they participate in their favorite activities.

Young athletes are at risk for common injuries like fractures, dislocations, ligament injuries, tendon ruptures, and tendonitis.

Often these injuries are due to accidents and falls during play, but they can also be caused by overuse.

Sports such as tennis, golf, field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse can cause overuse injuries to hands, elbows and shoulders because of the swinging and shooting motion needed. Baseball pitchers are especially at risk for overuse injuries due to repetitive motion and should follow the recommended pitch counts for their age.

Musicians may risk injury if they overuse their hands by playing their instrument for several hours every day. They are also at risk for neck and shoulder injuries. Nerve compression is quite common due to holding an instrument in the same position for a long period of time. An important strategy for avoiding overuse injuries is for musicians, their instructors and their families to recognize when it's time to take a break from playing.

When to See a Doctor Most hand, wrist, arm, elbow and shoulder injuries can be treated at home with rest, ice, elevation and over the counter anti-inflammatory medication. However, some injuries need to be evaluated by a hand specialist. Open wounds, fractures, dislocations, jammed fingers, crushed fingertips or fingernail injuries, swelling that doesn't improve within a few days, or loss of motion are signs that a child should be evaluated by a hand surgeon. The National Program for Playground Safety reports that 80 percent of playground injuries are caused by falls. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that the area where a child might fall should have a protective surfacing extending at least six feet in all directions and should be at least 12 inches deep. Protective surfacing can be made of wood chips, mulch, sand, pea gravel, shredded tires or rubber mats. Adequate supervision is also important. Climbing bars and “monkey bars” cause more falls and injuries than any other type of playground equipment. Parents can encourage kids to stick to the swings or slide or teach them a few games they can play with friends that don't involve climbing equipment.

So, you can imagine that this social distancing and lack of face-to-face connection with peers is a major stressor for them in contrast to younger kids who are very content being with their parents. It can also be hard for teens to understand how all of the rules and mandates apply to them and the importance of their role in this. It may be worth reiterating what a noxious virus this is and the fact that they can catch it or they can be asymptomatic carriers, bring it home and cause others to be sick, including grandparents and other loved ones.

However, it’s important to validate their feelings and acknowledge any anger that may exist. Recognize how important prom, the last stretch of school and graduation are.

This could be re-framed as – “this year of high school is now ‘extra special’ and you’ll remember it throughout your life.” We can also challenge them to produce memories and projects that are unique to this time to help make the most of the situation.

How can parents encourage teens to open up so we can validate their feelings and help them through this situation?

Everyone who has raised teenagers has struggled with this challenge, with one situation or another. Teenagers are not typically going to solicit your advice. As parents we have to understand that this isn’t personal.

Try to make your communication with them as non-threatening as possible. Maybe your family can agree to have dinner together each day. One of the advantages of this pandemic is that people have the time to do that.

This is a good time to find out how everyone is feeling. You might even talk about your own vulnerability.

You don’t have to lose control of your emotions, but you can gently share your own feelings and your teenager might join in.

Normalizing their feelings is also very important – “How must it feel to not be around your friends? How must it feel to have been looking forward to an event that is now not going to happen? That must be so disappointing.” You can share your own disappointments in missing out on things you had planned so they know they are not alone in feelings of sadness or frustration.

What are some things that might be stressors for teenagers at this time?

A big thing is missing out on important and sentimental life events, particularly for those who are graduating from high school. This is their last experience before they become young adults and it’s a rite of passage that feels like they have been “robbed of.” It is sure to cause high emotions and feelings of frustration, which may include resentment.

Most importantly, it is acknowledging their loss and knowing that it’s validated by the significant people in their life. And then, it’s time to move on. That’s the nature of loss like this – you have to accept it and then figure out how things are going to work out for you.

In addition to talking over family dinners, what are some other ways parents can make this time less stressful for teens?

As humans, we’re creatures of habit so creating a loose schedule for the day and sticking with it as much as possible can be helpful for everyone. When kids go to school

there is a set of guidelines for how the day is going to go, and often it’s the unpredictability of not knowing that causes anxiety.

Spending time with family is a great thing to do these days. Maybe your teenager will let you into their world a little bit – you can find out what’s trending in the teen world. Talk about things that are important to them and focus on things they’ve wanted to do, but don’t usually have the time for. We’ve seen videos of teens teaching their parents to use TikTok and making funny videos together.

Look at the opportunities this time can bring and take advantage of them.

Parenting Corner Dealing With Lying

an excerpt from Andrew Mullen’s book, Middle Schooled.

The middle school years can be filled with tremendous accomplishments, growth and maturity. As parents, you can sit back and watch your child steadily evolve into the amazing and confident young person you know that they are. This parenting stuff is easier than growing a Chia Pet… (Insert sound of a needle scratching across a record album.) But wait!

You just realized your child has been lying to you for two weeks!

Instead of attending track practice, they have been enjoying Iced Espresso Classics at Starbucks and perusing the aisles of Five Below looking for fake plastic vomit and other must have items. What are you going to do!!!! Keep reading, it is all going to be OK! Believe it or not, lying is part of growing up. While there are many families that don't have issues with their children not telling the truth, many do. Yes, it is wrong, but experimenting with this new-found power is normal.

When you think about it, it is amazing. With a few carefully twisted words your child can:

Avoid negative consequences.

(Tell my parents I did my homework and I am still going to the dance. Sweet!)

Establish their identity with their peers (Forging my parents' signature on the Sex Education Unit packet and telling my buddies. I am a loose cannon, a rebel of unparalleled proportions.)

Prove they are different from their parents or that they feel the rules are too strict (Dress to short. Is that right mom? I will leave the house in sweat pants and pack the mini skirt in my gym bag. Change in the bathroom and I am back in the game!)

Get some needed attention.

Avoid hurting someone's feelings (You look nice in that dress Aunt Frumpy… We both know your anut did look a little big boned in that dress but why make her feel bad? Perhaps this kind of lie you let go? Pick and choose your battles.)

Here are some suggestions that might be helpful in dealing with this problem-solving strategy that can quickly become a bad habit:

Stay calm! When you catch your child in a lie, don't react.

Send them to their room and cool down. Talk to your spouse or other trusted person and come up with a game plan.

Remember that they are not lying to hurt you. There is probably something going on and they don't know how to deal with it. Yes, they lied and you are mad, but why did they do it?

What is the underlying problem they were trying to solve? Ask them!

Don't start lecturing. They don't listen. Stick to the facts and keep it simple. “I saw you jump out of the window, fall into the recycling bins and run down the road. I know you left the house.”

When they are honest, make a big deal about it. When they mess up, keep your cool. “Thank you for telling me you scratched our new BMW with your hockey stick. Your father and I appreciate your honesty…”

It is our job as parents to help our kids deal with life and guide them through this confusing time.

Seriously, it is. Would I lie to you?

Have consequences that you can and will follow through with.

Keep the emotion out of it.

Focus on why they felt the need to lie and discuss other options that might have helped solve the problem in a more effective way.

Do not engage in arguing. This normally does not help.

Be a good role model. If you tell lies, your kids will too.

Interested in visiting a museum, attending a lecture or hearing a concert? Your favorite museums, arboretums and music venues most likely offer online programs. Visit their website or social media accounts, like

Facebook and YouTube, to see what they offer. The Frick Collection in NYC has a lecture series called Travel with a Curator or enjoy virtual walks at the Morris Arboretum.

Both are available on YouTube. Several major performing centers, such as the Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center offer performances online or on television.

For those who would like to catch up with family and friends, there are several online programs that allow you to have a real time, face to face conversation with 2 or more people. Zoom, Facetime, Skype and Facebook are free apps that you can use. You do need to have a smartphone, tablet or computer in order to access the services.

Schedule a weekly get together to keep in touch.

Pet Safety & Helpful Tips Pet Preparedness

by Alyssa Mages, BS, CVT If there's one thing that the recent events surrounding the pandemic has taught us is that being prepared is a crucial & often overlooked concept. From the lack of toilet paper to shortages in batteries, multiple medication backorders and no critical care supplies, the list goes on & on & on. As focused as we've been on the essentials for us humans - and this is as it should be - let us not forget that it's equally important to not lose sight of our furry family members & their needs.

Many of our canine & feline companions are also on long-term medications and/or prescription diets. Some need additional support in the forms of enrichment and/or behavioral interventions, and they are just as susceptible to the feelings of depression and anxiety during times like these. Having an adequate supply of their food & medications, supportive care provided and/or providers in place, and ways to alleviate and address their stressors are just a few of the ways we need to provide our best friends with the care they need and deserve.

Some other suggestions and thoughts to keep in mind are to ensure your pets are upto-date on their vaccinations, have necessary ID tags/licenses, and are microchipped. With

the summer months and the subsequent loud events that come along at this time of year - fireworks & thunderstorms - can bring the potential for spooked pets and escapees.

Another thing to be aware of are when other disaster-type events take place such as weather-related incidents, emergencies and/or accidents is to have a First Aid or Emergency Kit solely designated for the furry members of your family.
