What is TTTV?

The mission of Tredyffrin Township Television is to provide the citizens of the Township with the facilities, equipment, training, and support necessary to create, produce and telecast noncommercial television programs by, for and about the Township. Such programming will be aimed at the preservation, development and enhancement of the diversity of thought, culture and heritage within the community.

Our curricula are free to Tredyffrin residents and their crewmembers, who need not be Tredyffrin residents.

Every taping, according to the physical demands of the production, requires a certain number of certified crewmembers to safely tape a show. At least three certified crewmembers, one of whom must be the (Tredyffrin resident) Lead Certified Producer, are recommended for a standard quality three-camera studio recording.

The number of crewmembers required for any field production will be determined by the studio manager at the time of the equipment loan. The basic determining factor will always be how many trained people are necessary to keep talent, crew and equipment safe.

Only certified crewmembers may use our facilities and equipment.

Classes are held at the Greenwood Studio in the Tredyffrin Township Municipal Bldg.

1100 DuPortail Rd. in Berwyn, PA 19312.

Students may attend either the weekday 7 PM or Saturday noon class, and that selection may change week to week. Space may be limited to first registrants. Classes may be cancelled if attendance is low.

WINTER RECREATION

It's not too early to start thinking about the 2019 - 2020 Winter Rec Program.

Scheduled on Saturday mornings in December, January and February, it's a great opportunity for your children to spend some time with their friends, to make new friends, to learn new crafts, perfect already known ones and to practice their sports skills.

Recreation Waiver TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP CHESTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA ADULT PARTICIPANT OR PARENT OF MINOR PARTICIPANT WAIVER AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT This waiver and release is made, executed and delivered by an adult participant or the parents or legal guardian of, a minor participant ("Releasor") to Tredyffrin Township., Chester County ("Township"). Releasor desires to participate, or, in the case of a minor, allow said minor to participate in a tennis and/or squash clinic provided by L3 Tennis (the “Event”).

Releasor understands Township's participation in the Event is limited to registration of participants at a reduced registration fee on behalf of L3 Tennis and that Township has no control and/or connection with the operations of the Event. A condition for the registration fee offered through Township's registration process is that all participants must sign a release form holding Township harmless from any and all liability.

In consideration of being permitted to participate or a minor's permitted participation in any way or purpose in the Event, the undersigned, Releasor, jointly and severally, for himself or herself, his or her personal representatives, heirs, executors, successors, and assigns does HEREBY RELEASE, WAIVE, DISCHARGE and COVENANT NOT TO SUE Township and each of its successors, assigns, officers, officials, directors, employees, contractors, and sureties (the “Releasees”) from any and all liability, claims, counterclaims, costs (including but not limited to attorney's fees and court costs), demands, rights, actions, bills, bonds, undertakings, liens, notes, suits, causes of action (in tort, contract, law, equity or otherwise), known or unknown, accrued or not yet accrued, on account of injury to the person or property or resulting in death of the undersigned or minor participant, whether caused by negligence or otherwise while Releasor or minor participant is in any way participating in the Event. Releasor HEREBY AGREES TO INDEMNIFY, SAVE, and HOLD HARMLESS the Releasees from any loss, liability, damage, or cost they or the participating minor may incur due in any way or purpose participating in the Event and whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise. Releasor HEREBY ASSUMES FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR and RISK OF BODILY INJURY, DEATH OR PROPERTY damage due to the negligence of Releasees or otherwise while in any way or purpose of their or minor's participation in the Event.

Movie Nights at Tredyffrin Public Library

Stop by the Library for movies on the big screen. Every month, we will be screening classics every second Saturday and newer releases on the final Friday of the month. Movies begin at 7 PM and doors open fifteen minutes before.

Wednesday, September 18, 1 PM Based on an expert-led program to prevent bone loss without medication. Accelerated bone loss begins in all women during perimenopause and increases to 9-13% in the first 5 years after menopause, and fractures from osteoporosis can lead to premature death.

Volunteer Firefighters How To Become A Volunteer At Your Local Fire Station Fire stations across Chester County need volunteers like you who are ready to help save lives and protect property right in their own backyard. That's why last year, the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association launched www.HelpFightFire.com to help make it easy to understand the many volunteer opportunities available. Plus, there's a volunteer inquiry form you can fill out that will allow members of your local fire station to contact you about your interest in becoming a volunteer and answer any questions you may have.

Administrative Volunteers: Non-emergency volunteers can also play a huge role. They help teach fire safety, assist in fundraising events, help with bookkeeping, human resources, website maintenance, and other responsibilities. Whatever your skill set, we can use it.

Volunteering as a junior firefighter is also a great way to secure community service hours and it looks great on a college resume.

Hello Parents!

I don't know about you, but my children have been so eager for the start of school! You can only sleep in, spend time with friends and family and enjoy life to the fullest for so long. It gets old. The kids keep saying things like, “School is awesome! I am so excited to open the gift of education each and every day,” “The birds sound so pretty at 5:00 in the morning” and “I love homework more than my Rainbow Flip Flops and Uggs.”

Seeing the bus lights coming down the road on a foggy morning produces a giddy euphoria in the children akin to past reported sightings of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer…

The start of school can be crazy and stressful for families. Below are a few tips and reminders that might help to make the transition back to school a little easier: Reestablish the daily routine:

Bed time, dinner time, wake up time. These all need to be slowly brought back from the summer time “do what you want when you want” routine.

The homework is going to start pouring in. Make sure they have a quiet place to do their work and that they are managing their time properly.

Encourage them to put their phone in a different room while they are working.

Removing technology from your child one hour before you actually want them to be asleep can be extremely helpful.

Be optimistic about the start of school. We all know it's tough but stay positive in a realistic way. Remind them about the things they enjoy about school.

Friends, nice teachers, tater tots, the smell of the hallways on humid days. (After 16 years I finally figured it out. The smell when the kids come in from recess period is room temperature Italian deli meats mixed with red on-ion, Axe Body Spray and unkempt recycling bins.)

Plan healthy dinners ahead of time. If you can make some

dinners over the weekend and freeze them, even better. I am happy to share some of my recipes upon request.

If your middle schooler is annoying you, consider buying them #3 pencils (you may need to mail order these from Canada) and folders with puppies on them.

Middle school is like space travel in many ways. If your child's heat tiles fall off upon reentry to school, please ask for help!

Good Luck!

Make sure they have whatever school supplies are needed. My family went to Staples Sunday night before school started. I was able to wrestle the last pack of mechanical pencils from an elderly woman, so it all ended well. In the future, we may choose to make these purchases in advance…

Talk to your kids. Even though they may not answer in complete sentences or even make eye contact, don't give up! The kids need to know you are interested in their school day.

Police Department News Community Relations

On Saturday, May 18th, some neighborhood children had a lemonade stand on Westwind Drive near the corner of Winston Way in Berwyn. It was a warm morning and afternoon and they had been outside selling lemonade for a number of hours. In total, they managed to sell over 100 cups, but their two favorites were to Officers Galletta and Middleton! It absolutely made the kids' day...they were thrilled! A BIG thank you to the officers for giving the kids a memory they won't soon forget!!!

Chester County Public Safety Training Campus, Demonstration of Fire Services, Crime Prevention and guest speakers from the District Attorney's office and other cooperating agencies.

Classes are held every Wednesday evening, 7-9:30 PM for 11 weeks, starting September 18th, at the Township Building. If you are interested in participating this Fall, please visit www.tredyffrin.org for more information. Space is limited so get your application in quickly. Deadline for applications is September 13th. The Academy will not be held during the week of Thanksgiving.

Locations nearby that will accept medical liquids include: East Brandywine Township, Kennett Square Borough, North Coventry Township, Oxford Borough, Parkesburg Borough, Phoenixville Borough, West Chester Borough, West Goshen Township, West Whiteland Township, and Willistown Township. Residents should visit the websites or call these municipalities for hours, regulations, and restrictions.

Syringes should be put in a strong, plastic container, like a laundry detergent or bleach bottle, sealed, then placed it in the household trash.

Retired Flag Disposal

As part of his Eagle Scout project, Seamus Corr from Devon Troop 50 built and installed a flag disposal box for used, torn or faded American flags in the Tredyffrin Township Building lobby. Seamus coordinated and directed the scouts to help construct the box as part of the project's scope. His team built two boxes; the other is located at the Tredyffrin Public Library.

19 Annual Tredyffrin Township Citizens Police Academy The Citizens Police Academy program was created to provide the community a close-up view into how the Tredyffrin Police Department functions and the vast array of services it provides. Attendees are provided the opportunity to come to the Police Department once a week and learn about various topics.

Off-Leash Dog Registration

At the November 7, 2018, Board of Supervisors meeting, changes to the Park and Recreation Ordinance, Chapter 138 were approved. The changes include off-leash hours for dogs at designated Township parks (Teegarden) during specified hours. All offleash dogs must be registered with the Township and must display the issued registration tag. Dog owners must provide the Township with a copy of the dog's license and vaccination records at registration.

The fee is $25 per dog for Tredyffrin residents and $50 per dog for non-residents.

when they see a friend driving while distracted, to have their friends sign a pledge to never drive distracted, to become involved in their local Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter, and to share messages on social media that remind their friends, family, and neighbors not to make the deadly choice to drive distracted.

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system - anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed. You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.

Parents first have to lead by example - by never driving distracted - as well as have a talk with their young driver about distraction and all of the responsibilities that come with driving. Have everyone in the family sign the pledge to commit to distraction-free driving.

Remind your teen driver that in states with Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL), a violation of distracted-driving laws could mean a delayed or suspended license.

Educators and employers can play a part, too. Spread the word at your school or workplace about the dangers of distracted driving. Ask your students to commit to distraction-free driving or set a company policy on distracted driving.

Consequences Using a cell phone while driving creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries on U.S. roads. In 2017 alone, 3,166 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.

NHTSA In Action

NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) is dedicated to eliminating risky behaviors on our nation's roads. NHTSA leads the fight nationally against distracted driving by educating Americans about its dangers and partnering with the States and local police to enforce laws against distracted driving that help keep us safe.

NHTSA's campaigns and public service announcements make the case to Americans that safe driving means driving without distractions. You've likely seen or heard our public service announcements, but we're also on Facebook and Twitter sharing stories and tips to help save lives.

The foundation of NHTSA's efforts on distracted driving and other risky driving behaviors is our partnership with the States and local police. The States determine laws affecting distracted driving, but NHTSA provides Federal investments in the locally driven strategies that address the States' specific needs. One of the highlights of this relationship comes during April's Distracted Driving Awareness Month, which pairs a national advertising campaign with a law enforcement crackdown called U Drive. U Text. U Pay.

The Law (in Pennsylvania) 3316. Prohibiting text-based communications.

(a) Prohibition. No driver shall operate a motor vehicle on a highway or traffic way in this Commonwealth while using an interactive wireless communications device to send, read or write a text-based communication while the vehicle is in motion. A person does not send, read or write a text-based communication when the

person reads, selects or enters a telephone number or name in an interactive wireless communications device for the purpose of activating or deactivating a voice communication or a telephone call. (b) (Reserved). (c) Seizure. The provisions of this section shall not be construed as authorizing the seizure or forfeiture of an interactive wireless communications device, unless otherwise provided by law. (d) Penalty. A person who violates subsection (a) commits a summary offense and shall, upon conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine of $50.

Speed Limits In today's fast paced society, we all have constraints on our time. Additionally, driving, in many cases, has become an extension of our office and/or place of business. These facts combined with excessive speeds usually result in traffic accidents or simply “crashes” as they are now categorized by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). We all must remember that no meeting or important personal matter is worth compromising the safety of yourself or others for the sake of a few minutes saved in transit. Please follow speed limits and slow down for safety's sake.

Environmental Advisory Council Doug Tallamy: Plant Natives - Life Depends on It

On Saturday, June 9, Doug Tallamy, an entomologist at the University of Delaware, spoke at the Landscaping with Natives conference at Millersville University. In his talk, The Little Things that Rule the World, he updated the audience on the dire need for a change in landscaping practices and stressed the importance of insects for our survival. He is famous among native-plant enthusiasts as the author of Bringing Nature Home, a book that showed gardeners why they need to include native plants in their landscapes. He has publicized work demonstrating that local pollinating insects can't survive without plants that they've evolved with, and that means so-called native plants that were here before the introduction of species from Europe and Asia. Researchers have also documented a decline in birds, both fewer species and fewer individual numbers.

Tallamy noted that we have 1.5 billion fewer breeding birds than 40 years ago. He lays the blame for the decline on the impoverished landscape the birds have for breeding or resting in while migrating: An absence of native plants means an absence of insects, and, thus, an absence of food for birds and their nestlings. Our landscaping practices in the suburbs are a major culprit. He is not the only scientist sounding the extinction alarm. The UN Intergovernmental Science-

Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) published a report in May 2019 with this warning: "Nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history and the rate of species extinction is accelerating, with grave impact on people around the world." Insects are often overlooked as victims of this accelerated extinction.

What's the link between insects and the rest of nature? Insects, especially caterpillars, provide excellent nutrition for the creatures that eat them, from small animals like other insects to larger ones like foxes and bears; but especially birds. Tallamy and others have published research focusing on the birdinsect connection. He reports the astonishing statistic that a pair of chickadees needs 6,000 to 9,000 caterpillars to raise their young and those caterpillars won't be present in the absence of native plants. Tallamy and others in a November 2018 article in PNAS found that a landscape should include 94% native plants to maintain chickadee populations.

Habitats with less than 30% natives are certain to lead to decline of chickadee and other bird populations.

Here's a summary of the main points presented by Tallamy at the Millersville Conference: Natural habitat continues to decline year after year, not only in acreage, but in quality.

Too much developed land, whether farmland or residential, is planted as a monoculture (grows only one species), eliminating diverse habitat.

Current landscaping practices eliminate needed habitat for 95% of species on Earth.

Humans depend on biodiversity to maintain the ecosystems we depend on to provide clean air, clean water, fertile soil, carbon dioxide sequestration, and other fundamental necessities. Humans can't live alone on this planet - we need to be part of a rich biome to survive!

Species extinction is likely if nothing changes.

Tallamy notes that 83% of US land is privately owned, with about half of that residential.

This provides an opportunity and a responsibility for citizens to make a difference simply by changing their landscaping practices.

Why Do It

1. Cut your lawn in half.

Allow clover and other species to grow in the lawn that remains.

A monoculture of mowed turfgrass provides no habitat for beneficial insects or soil organisms. The soil becomes compact with mowing.

Lawn chemicals damage the soil and water.

2. Remove non-native invasive species from your property (see box for a partial list).

Invasives out-compete native plants, but they provide poor nutrition for birds and insects.

3. Use plants with the most habitat value ('keystone' plants) Tallamy's website and the links there will help you find the right ones for your space.

Native trees, especially oaks, native viburnums and other shrubs, and native flowering plants provide food for wildlife while nurturing the soil.

4. Build a landscape layered with plants - restore the ground layer by leaving twigs and leaves on the ground. Avoid using heavy equipment such as mowers over roots.

All the layers (leaf mulch, stems, shrubs, tree branches and leaves) provide support for needed insects, birds, and other wildlife.

5. Put motion sensors on your security lights.

Don't leave floodlights on all night. Night-flying moths will beat themselves to death fluttering around them. Fireflies need dark for their light to attract a mate.

6. Plant for specialist pollinators.

Many insects look for only one species, or only one shape of flower.

Plant a variety to host the greatest variety of valuable insects.

7. Plant natives that bloom sequentially.

Provide nectar & pollen throughout the growing season while providing color for people.

8. Oppose mindless mosquito spraying.

Spraying does not select for only mosquitos.

9. Minimize insecticide use.

Only a few insects are damaging to property or people. Don't kill all insects to get rid of a few!

10. Join your HOA and change from within.

We must start educating neighbors and landscape crews!

Solarize: Helping homeowners go solar

Interested in rooftop solar but not sure how to start? Worried about the capital outlay?

Solarize might be able to help. Solarize is a grassroots-based collective program for implementing photovoltaic (PV) solar projects.

First begun in Portland, Oregon, Solarize has expanded with support from the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar America Communities program. It can be run by residents in a township, residents in a neighborhood, or by other groups, for example, Solarize Philly is run by the Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA). The team also recommends ways to transition away from fossil fuels. Historic House Tour Old houses tell wonderful stories and the 15th Annual Historic House Tour will not disappoint.

The saying goes, 'If walls could talk what stories they could tell.'' Held annually since 2004, the Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust arranges for these stories to be told on its annual historic house tour. The much-anticipated 15th Annual Historicth House Tour on Saturday, September 28 , will take you behind the scenes as the doors of local historic properties are opened to visitors. Each featured property on the house tour has generations of original stories to tell!

The annual historic house tour is a signature event for Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and educating the community about local historic and cultural resources. As the tour enters its fifteenth year, it continues as an important community event and the Trust's largest annual fundraiser.

Self-guided, tour the properties at your own pace in any order. Homes are staffed with docents to enlighten you on the rich history of each property.

Rebuilding Of The Jones Log Barn Nears Completion Preserving Local History: How Can You Get Involved?

Dating from 1730, the Jones Log Barn was part of a farm owned by Griffith John (aka Jones) in the William Penn “Welsh Tract”, a portion of which became Tredyffrin Township. This type of barn was once the predominant type of agricultural structure in Tredyffrin and neighboring townships and was initially built within 10 years of the death of Pennsylvania's founder, William Penn.

Much of the rebuilding of the centuries old barn is complete, including the stone foundation, log structure, and forebay. With the roof, siding and flooring scheduled to be completed this fall, the vision for the barn's future use as a Living History Center is close to a reality.

The Jones Log Barn is unique, not only for its age and its contributions to Pennsylvania history, but also for its architecture. The barn had stood next to British Major General William Howe's headquarters in Berwyn for over 250 years. Sadly, due to benign neglect, the deteriorating barn posed a liability to its owner at its original location.

Deemed eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and certified as a Chester County Historical Resource in 2004, the Jones Log Barn was saved by Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust, a historic preservation organization.

Facing an estate-directed demolition order in 2000, the structure was carefully disassembled to await reconstruction at Duportail House, a setting in keeping with its original and historic location.

Joining the other two historic structures, General Duportail's Quarters and the Federal Barn, both on the National Register of Historic Places, the Jones Log Barn will be the centerpiece of the Living History Center at Duportail. Preserving our past gives us more understanding and hope for the future.

With the help of the community, the Living History Center will welcome visitors and provide a glimpse into the stories and experiences of our past.

Another source of funding for the Living History Center is the Trust's fall and spring lecture series. The 2019 fall lectures to be held at Duportail House include “Symbols in the Cemetery” with author and historian Tammy Schane on Thursday, October 17th.

Just in time for Halloween, attendees will discover the meaning of symbols carved on tombstones, the history behind them, and why tombstone styles changed in the 19th century.

On Thursday, November 14th, come hear historic architect, author, and historian James Garrison talk on “Who Was Will Price A Decade of Change 1890-1900”. In the decade that began with the design of Woodmont and ended with Yorklynne, William Price transitioned from a designer of suburban developer homes, notably in Wayne and Germantown, to an architect of mansions. The program will focus on the large houses of the decade, including two major works in Easttown. Paoli Inn Dedication Ceremony On May 16th, a ceremony was held to commemorate the historic Paoli Inn and it's importance during the Battle of Paoli in 1777. Historian Bart Van Valkenburgh delivered a comprehensive history of the Paoli Inn and Tredyffrin Township Board of Supervisors Chairman Murph Wysocki provided the history of Tredyffrin Township.

West Chester Native Samuel Barber To Be Featured In Main Line Symphony's 74th Season When Main Line Symphony Orchestra (MLSO) music director Don Liuzzi first auditioned for the Philadelphia Orchestra, he was asked to play a timpani excerpt from the final section of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. He distinctly remembers finishing the passage and hearing one of judges respond, “Play that again, but this time with a little more meaning.” Mr. Liuzzi was dismayed. He knew the movement was about joy but hadn't taken the time to really think about the meaning of the text. Thankfully for Philadelphia audiences, Mr. Liuzzi won the audition, but the experience prompted him to devote much of his study to considering how composers use musical elements to tell listeners what they believe. This attention to musical meaning motivated the MLSO's upcoming 74th season, “Beethoven, Barber, and Beyond.”

Beethoven and Barber share what Mr. Liuzzi calls an ability to, “bring out a mood in the sounds that they write. They're both extraordinary at it.” Most American schoolchildren know a bit about Beethoven's life, but despite being one thof the greatest American composers of the 20 century, Samuel Barber remains more of a mystery. For Chester County residents, however, that may change. Born in West Chester, PA in 1910, Samuel Barber exhibited an early interest in music. As a young boy, he composed a letter to his mother, begging her to relieve him of his athletic responsibilities: “I was meant to be a composer,” he wrote, “Don't ask me to try to forget this unpleasant thing and go play football.” (from Barbara B. Heyman, “Reflections of Samuel Barber at Curtis and Beyond,” Overtones (Spring):

2010) Barber began his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music at age 14, eventually becoming a triple major in piano, composition, and voice.

One of his most famous vocal works, Knoxville: Summer of 1915, with text from James Agee's poem about how a little boy sees the world on a summer evening, will be performed on the MLSO's first program of the season, held on November 22, at Valley Forge Middle School. The soloist will be Sophia Hunt, who follows in Barber's footsteps as a student at Curtis where she holds the Hirsig Family Fellowship. Three years after leaving Curtis, Barber wrote his first symphony, which appears on the MLSO winter program. Like Beethoven before him, Barber was capable of taking short melodic fragments and building them into a grand whole to evoke an intense emotional response. Mr. Liuzzi lists Barber with Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland as the most important American musical voices of the last 100 years. “They're the most accessible,” Mr. Liuzzi says, '”in that their melodies speak to people.”

Founded in 1945, the Main Line Symphony Orchestra has had a long association with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Concertmaster Paul Arnold and former Concertmaster Paul Roby are both members, as was former Music Director Henry Scott. Recent soloists from the Philadelphia Orchestra have included First Associate Concertmaster Juliette Kang, violinists Amy Oshiro Moralis, and Hirono Oka as well as Assistant Principal Cellist Yumi Kendall. This season, Principal Clarinetist Ricardo Morales will perform Claude Debussy's Premiere Rhapsody. Of his

playing, Mr. Liuzzi says, “Morales has a unique rich tone that is changing the sound of the instrument. He is the greatest clarinetist of our generation.” Also featured this season is the winner of the James Dietz Memorial Young Artist Competition, violinist Vibha Janakiraman, the youngest participant in the competition's history, who will play a movement from Wieniawski's second violin concerto.

The final concert of the season begins with Music for a Scene from Shelley, based on the poet's Prometheus Unbound, and which Barber composed while on a trip to Italy and inspired by the majestic view. After leaving Pennsylvania, Barber spent many summers abroad and had a stint in the U.S. Army Air Force before settling down in Mount Kisco, NY, where he would share life and music with Gian Carlo Menotti. Listening to his work this season in tandem with Beethoven's, including the latter's second Leonore Overture, which most of us probably haven't had a chance to hear, as well as his first symphony and the sixth, the beloved Pastoral, will give audiences a new understanding of a hometown musical talent. Although they share a similar approach to structure and sentiment, there are, of course, differences between the season's two featured composers. As Mr. Liuzzi put it, “When you go out in nature, Barber is looking at the sky. Beethoven is looking at the lichen on the rocks.”

Some older adults are reluctant to exercise because they believe exercise must be rigorous or painful to have benefits. “As you age, you should strive for consistency rather than intensity - ideally 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day,” says Jacqui, personal trainer in the Fitness Center at Surrey Services for Seniors in Devon.

The ideal exercise regiment for older adults should include the following three components which can be adapted for anyone's unique stamina and abilities.

Aerobic and endurance exercises.

Walking, stationary cycling or swimming for 30 minutes daily are great aerobic exercises for seniors. If 30 minutes is too tiring at first, try breaking exercise into two 15-minute or three, 10-minute sessions.

Strength and resistance training.

This can be done using small, hand weights, bands or your own body weight (lunges or squats). Two or three strength workouts per week provide the greatest benefits to help prevent bone loss and improve balance.

Stretching and flexibility. Classes that provide stretching and strength training are essential as you age. Activities like yoga and Pilates particularly help with balance and fall prevention because they strengthen supportive muscles while reducing stiffness.

Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens Welcomes New Executive Director Announcing ®2019 Green Ribbon Native Plant Selections

In 2003, Jenkins introduced its Green Ribbon Native Plant® selection program as a way to share the uses and merits of native plants in the landscape. Each year, three plants, typically a tree, a shrub, and a wildflower, are selected. To receive this recognition, plants must be native to eastern North America, adaptable to a wide range of environmental conditions, and have horticultural appeal in a variety of landscape situations. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, native plants typically possess great ecological value for numerous insects, birds, and other wildlife. These plants can be seen growing in various locations throughout the gardens at Jenkins. Keep reading to learn more about the 2019 Green Ribbon Native Plant® selections.

Yellowwood (Cladrastis kentukea)

Tom Smarr We are pleased to announce the appointment of Tom Smarr as the new Executive Director of Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens. Tom will succeed Dr. Harold Sweetman, who grew the garden from the ground up and served as Jenkins' Executive Director for 33 years. Tom assumed the role as Executive Director on June 24th.

Tom comes to Jenkins with over two decades of experience in horticulture, conservation, botanic gardens, and public parks. He holds a master's degree in urban horticulture from the University of Washington and has worked for institutions such as the University of Washington Botanic Gardens, New England Wild Flower Society's “Garden in the Woods”, the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway in Boston, and the High Line in New York City. Most recently, he led garden and natural areas design for The Parklands of Floyds Fork, a nearly 4,000-acre ribbon of parks in Louisville, Kentucky, which opened in 2016.

A native of northern Pennsylvania, Tom stated, “It is a great honor to return home to lead this beautiful and important garden so expertly grown by Dr. Harold Sweetman. I am excited to expand on the many initiatives already taking place at Jenkins: a welldocumented plant collection, a robust endowment campaign, educational experiences focused on environmental horticulture and a free visitor experience for the community. Alongside a terrific and dedicated staff, I look forward to utilizing the resources that Jenkins can provide to further the mission and connect people with our natural world. Great collaborative support will bring forth great achievements as we further the Jenkins legacy.”

Tredyffrin Township

American yellowwood is a medium-sized tree native to the southeastern United States, reaching 30-50 feet tall when mature. Indicative of its name, the wood is yellow and encased by smooth grey to light brown bark. It has panicles of white, showy, and fragrant flowers that bloom in the spring. In the fall, it can be identified by its brilliant yellow foliage and bean-like fruits.

Yellowwood grows in full-sun to full-shade but performs best in part-sun to part-shade with welldrained soil. It makes a great residential tree and can serve as a focal point on smaller properties or can be planted in masses in larger landscapes. Its roots grow deep into the ground making it an ideal tree to plant under. Pruning should occur in summer because the wood is prone to bleeding if pruned in late winter or early spring. There are very few cultivars of this species with the most notable being Perkins Pink, which sports light pink flowers.

and black walnut. It looks best when planted in masses, as a border, or in a prairie-like or meadow setting. Cutting back Little Bluestem should occur in late winter or early spring. There are many cultivars of this plant including Twilight Zone, which has purple highlights towards the tip; Standing Ovation, which has dark purple and thicker blades towards the base; and Carousel, which has a lower and broader base.

Florida Anise Tree (Illicium floridanum)

Despite the common name, this rapidly growing, broadleaf evergreen shrub grows 6-10 feet tall and 4-8 feet wide. It is native to the southeastern United States and northern Mexico, and can be found in moist, wooded areas. One of its most attractive characteristics is the maroon-purple star-like blooms. The flower is 1-2 inches in diameter and blooms April-May. These unique flowers have a pungent fragrance and are pollinated by flies and beetles. The foliage has a strong spicy fragrance when crushed, which makes this plant unpalatable to deer. Florida Anise Tree thrives in moist, well-drained, highly organic soil, and is partial to full shade. Although native to the deep south, it has proved winter hardy at Jenkins for over 30 years. This plant was first discovered in 1766 and entered into cultivation shortly after. Some popular cultivars include Alba, which has a white bloom; Halley's Comet, which has larger red blooms; and Shady Lady, which has light pink flowers and variegated foliage.

Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium)

Little bluestem is a prairie grass native to eastern North America that matures at 2-4 feet tall and 1.5-2 feet wide. As the name implies, this upright perennial grass is noted for its blueish foliage that turns a beautiful copper tone in the fall. In August, a purple-bronze flower reaches over the foliage and turns into a fluffy seed head, making it a fantastic specimen for yearround interest. This plant is very adaptable. It thrives in full sun, and can tolerate deer, drought, erosion, shallow-rocky soil,

Wharton Esherick Museum The Wharton Esherick Museum was awarded two grants this summer, totaling $75,000, to fund the development of a master campus and interpretive plan. The support came from two sources; the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, which awarded a Keystone Historic Preservation Grant of $25,000 to the Museum, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which awarded the Museum $50,000 towards the planning process.

These funds are being used by the Museum to develop a master campus plan, which will connect the Wharton Esherick Studio with Sunekrest, the 19th-century farmhouse owned by Esherick that the Museum purchased in 2014, and prepare for the eventual integration of Esherick's 1956 Workshop, which was designed in collaboration with Louis Kahn. Currently, Esherick's Studio is the centerpiece of the Museum and open through guided tours.

With the prospect of opening additional buildings to the public, the Museum is also reframing its interpretive philosophy to create new educational and interpretive experiences for visitors.

“Preserving the studio building and collections is the core of our mission, so that visitors for generations to come will be able to experience the joyful, intimate nature of Esherick's most iconic work. But his legacy extends far beyond his hilltop studio, influencing and exciting artists, makers, and audiences the world over,” said Wharton Esherick Museum Executive Director Julie Siglin. “This planning process will allow us to explore the true breadth of that mission as we consider new ways to interpret his work and influence, beyond the walls of the Studio.”

About one hour long, the guided tour is an immersive experience which takes guests through the home/studio of Wharton Esherick, preserved much as it was when the artist lived and worked there.
