As 2023 draws to a close, the Radnor Educational Foundation is proud to reflect on a year marked by impactful initiatives and unwavering commitment to the educational community. This fall, we received overwhelming interest and numerous grant applications from our five Radnor schools, which has served as a gratifying acknowledgement of the growing reputation of the Radnor Educational Foundation in steadfastly supporting and championing our teachers and schools. The breadth and depth of the proposals we received underscore the passion and dedication of our educators and community partners and their commitment to providing students with a well-rounded education.

The deadline for submitting Letters of Intent to be considered in the Radnor Educational Foundation's winter grant cycle is fast approaching on January 12, 2024. This is a prime opportunity for educators and school stakeholders to propose projects that can enhance the school curriculum within the Radnor Township School District.

Additionally, for those who may need a bit more time to refine their ideas, the spring grant cycle deadline is March 28, 2024. We encourage all interested parties to take advantage of these upcoming deadlines to contribute their creative proposals and ideas, as we continue to work collaboratively towards advancing educational excellence in Radnor.

We are pleased to announce that the Radnor Educational Foundation granted approximately $34,000 across 9 projects.

With this significant investment this fall, we are on track to surpass the financial support we provided to the school district in the previous academic year!

As we anticipate the culmination of this remarkable year, we recognize that it has

been a pivotal time for the Radnor Educational Foundation. Our ability to grant funds and support transformative projects is a testament to the generosity of our donors and the collaborative spirit of the Radnor community. The enthusiasm and engagement we have witnessed from all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and local businesses, have played a pivotal role in our success.

Looking forward to the new year, the Radnor Educational Foundation remains resolute in our commitment to advocating for students and teachers. We understand the evolving landscape of education and are prepared to adapt to the changing needs of our educational community. Our resolve is to continue fostering an environment where innovative ideas flourish, and students are equipped with the tools and experiences they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.

This fall's grants represent a spectrum of exciting and innovative projects, reflecting the vibrancy and diversity of the Radnor educational community. From STEM programs to arts and humanities initiatives, we are thrilled to support a wide range of projects that aim to enrich the learning environment and foster a culture of curiosity and creativity among students.

Of note, we are pleased to have granted $10,000 to Wayne Elementary School for their noteworthy "Sharing Sounds" project this fall. This initiative aims to install a sound garden in the primary playground, offering students a unique and interactive space for creative expression. The sound garden not only provides an additional avenue for students to create, cooperate, and socialize but also serves as a valuable educational tool. By engaging with the sound garden, students have the opportunity to recognize patterns and sounds, express emotions through music, and hone fine motor skills while actively participating in the joy of collaborative learning.

The Radnor Educational Foundation has also allocated funding for crucial needs within the educational landscape of Radnor High School. The foundation has extended a little over $1,700 in financial support to the Radnor Robotics Club, ensuring the availability of essential materials that facilitate the club's activities. Moreover, approximately $4,400 has been awarded for the purchase of stools for tables in the Student Common Areas, specifically designed to accommodate the new Flexible Classes. These new stools will not only contribute to creating a warm and inviting environment but will also provide students 8

VOTING INFORMATION Such a system, inherently built on unequal

National Popular Vote Compact: influence, promotes bad governance. In A Winning Way to recent years “battleground” states have received 7% more federal grants than the Presidency According to the September 25, 2023 release by the Pew Research Center, about two-thirds of Americans favor electing the President by popular vote.This group includes the League of Women Voters.

Why? Our current system allows the possibility that the winner of the popular vote may not have enough Electoral College votes to win the presidency. This was the case in the 2000 election of George Bush and the 2016 election of Donald Trump. This is nothing new. It also happened in 1824 with John Quincy Adams, with Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, and with Benjamin Harrison in 1888.

A consequence of the present electoral process is that presidential candidates can focus on a few key states and ignore voters in others. For example, in 2012, all of the 253 general-election campaign events were in just 12 states. Two-thirds were in just four states (Ohio, Florida, Virginia, and Iowa as shown in the map below.) Thirty-eight states were completely ignored. As Pennsylvania voters, we have felt the impact of being a target of campaigns for our twenty electoral votes. In 2016, we received a disproportionate share of campaign events, in fact, the third highest in the country. The map below reveals our influence.

The U.S. Constitution (Article II, Section 1) gives the states exclusive control over awarding their electoral votes: “Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors....” Therefore, the winner-takeall method of awarding electoral votes is state law; it is not in the U.S. Constitution.

The winner-take-all rule was used by only three states in 1789, and all three repealed it by 1800. It was not until the eleventh presidential election (1828) that even half the states recognized winnertake-all laws. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact will go into effect when enacted by states possessing a majority of the electoral votesthat is, enough to elect a President (270 of 538).

At that time, every voter in the country will acquire a direct vote for a group of at least 270 presidential electors supporting their choice for President. All of this group of 270+ presidential electors will be supporters of the candidate who received the most popular votes in all 50 states and D.C.thus making that candidate President.

“spectator” states, twice as many presidential disaster declarations, more Superfund enforcement exemptions, and more No Child Left Behind law exemptions.

How can we get rid of this current system, where the winner of a state usually takes all of its Electors? There are three routes. One is a constitutional amendment, which would need to be proposed by a two-thirds vote of both the U.S. House and Senate. It could also be proposed if two-thirds of the states requesting such a change through a convention called for that purpose. Once proposed, the amendment would need to be ratified by three-fourths of the states or their state conventions specifically created to do so. This is a long process that can be fraught with challenges. In fact, we are still awaiting the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment since its passage by Congress in 1972!

A second alternative, adopted by Maine and Nebraska, creates multiple popular vote contests in the state. Using the congressional district of their U.S. representatives, these states allocate two electoral votes to the state popular vote winner, and then one electoral vote to the popular vote winner in each congressional district (2 in Maine, 3 in Nebraska). As a result, this can lead to a split electoral vote.

This actually happened in Campaign Events Nebraska in 2008 in 2012 and Maine in 2016 and 2020 with two electoral votes effectively cancelling each other out!

Based on the LWV position, it works as follows:

The third option, which is supported by the League of Women Voters, as well as many others, is the National Popular Vote NPV Interstate Compact.

Why is this the best option? It guarantees the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes. It also ensures that every vote, in every state, will matter in every presidential election.

The Compact is a state-based approach that preserves the Electoral College, the state control of elections, and the power of the states

Currently, the NPV bill has been enacted by 17 jurisdictions possessing 205 electoral votes, including four small states (DE, HI, RI, and VT), nine medium-sized states (CO, CT, MD, MA, MN, NJ, NM, OR, and WA), three large states (CA, IL, and NY), and the District of Columbia. The bill will take effect when enacted by states with 65 more electoral votes. The bill has passed at least one chamber in eight additional states with 78 more electoral votes (AR, AZ, ME, MI, NC, NV, OK, and VA). It's time for Pennsylvania, with its twenty electoral votes, to join this effort!

The League of Women Voters of the United States believes that the direct-popular-vote method for electing the President and VicePresident is essential to representative government. In contrast, under the current system, a voter has a direct voice in electing only the small number of presidential electors to which their state is entitled.

Under NPV, every voter directly elects 270+ electors. During the 2021-’22 regular session of the Pennsylvania Legislature, HB 270 was introduced by Rep. Christopher Rabb to adopt NPV. Regrettably, it died without coming to a vote in the State Government Committee. Let your Pennsylvania legislators know that it's time to fix the system. Their efforts in support of NPV can make a difference in making every vote count.

PET HEALTH & WELL-BEING How cold is too cold for your dog?

Size and Weight

Acclimation

Body condition is important. A thin dog will get cold fast because they have less insulating body fat. However, obese dogs may move slower, increasing their exposure time to the cold.

What Can Owners Do?

Small dogs lose body heat faster than large dogs. Also, small dogs like chihuahuas have less fat padding around extremities making them more susceptible to ice and snow damage.

Dogs that live in colder areas regularly can tolerate more cold. Sled dogs get so used to the cold, they will sleep in the snow.

However, if an owner moves from a warm to a cold climate and there is not sufficient time to acclimate to the cold, a dog gets cold fast.

Breed and Coat Type

Thick hair insulates the body. Dogs with thicker fur such as Huskies can withstand cold temperatures for longer periods of time. Short haired dogs have less fur insulation and will get cold quickly. Hair can also be shortened from grooming or medical procedures.

As winter approaches, temperature safety for dogs is important whether they are going for a short walk or playing in the snow. Dogs get cold at 45°F and below, and by 20°F, dogs can develop frostbite and hypothermia.

Dogs can get frostbite, which initially effects extremities such as ear tips, feet, tail tip, nose, and the scrotum. If left untreated they will develop hypothermia.

Cold temperature safety in dogs is dependent on different variables. Every dog is different, but use of general guidelines in the cold are important for prevention of winter related illness.

Snow and ice can stick to long hair around toes. This can be painful, and cause prolonged ice contact on skin and toe pads.

Snow pellets stick to longer fur, decreasing a dog's body temperature.

Measures can be taken to keep dogs safe in the cold weather. Shoveling a small area for a dog to eliminate quickly in the cold without having to step through snow is helpful. Dogs can wear sweaters or jackets that extend along a dog's back and along the chest that is thick enough to block out wind while keeping out moisture. Booties that are warm and water resistant are great if the dog will tolerate them. Getting a dog used to these items can take a while, but persistence is key.

Age and Health Condition

Older dogs generally have more health issues that decrease their tolerance to cold exposure. Pain from osteoarthritis in aging dogs can make it harder to move around in the cold. Older dogs may also have conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease, and cancer, making it more difficult to tolerate the cold.

As outdoor temperature drops, it's important to monitor dogs for signs of being uncomfortably cold. Hypothermia can set in rapidly and is life threatening. Symptoms which should prompt an owner to take a dog to a warmer location include shivering, reluctance to walk, turning to return home, whining, trouble walking, lifting paws frequently, and even falling over. Once an owner has a dog inside, it's important to keep monitoring them to make sure they are okay. If an owner is unsure, it's always best to call the veterinarian.

INJURY PREVENTION WHAT IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?

Cortisone injections often provide excellent relief from symptoms. Unfortunately, symptomatic relief is only temporary, and most people experience a recurrence of symptoms after 3-4 months.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. The condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the handthe median nerve is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist.

For chronic or more advanced cases, carpal tunnel surgery is often recommended as the best course of treatment.

In addition to numbness and tingling, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause swelling, weakness, and night time pain. Patients sometimes describe dropping things unexpectedly and may have difficulty with buttoning shirts, tying shoelaces, or handling loose change.

What can I expect from surgery?

Surgery provides more space for the median nerve and relieves pressure on the median nerve and tendons. This procedure is typically done under light sedation and local anesthesia and usually takes only minutes to complete.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY COUNCIL (EAC) executive director at Penn Medicine

Penn Medicine Radnor is awarded the Ecco-Friendly Yard Award

Congratulations to Penn Medicine Radnor as the first corporation in the Township to be awarded the Ecco-Friendly Yard Award as developed by the Environmental Advisory Council. The award and associated flag was presented to Penn Medicine in October as recognition for their meadow on the Radnor campus. Tracey Commack, associate

said—“We focus on the health and wellness of our staff and of the community we serve.” She explained that the meadow will keep drinking water clean and reduces storm water run-off into streams and rivers.

The meadow will require very little maintenance and therefore reduces the use of fuel and chemicals. When the campus is fully completed, there will be two miles of walking paths allowing patients, staff and Radnor community members to walk/be outside in a park-like setting.

The EAC Green Team The Radnor Township Green Team was formed to lead the Township's efforts to fight climate change. In February 2019. The Township commissioners approved a resolution that set as goals the adoption of 100% renewable electricity by 2035 and 100% renewable energy for all uses including transportation and heating, by 2050. The Green Team, as part of the Environmental Advisory Council is currently supporting the Township as it implements recommendation in its Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Plan.

Radnor Township has initiated several projects that will make our municipality more energy efficient and reliant on renewable energy sources. First, installation of energy-efficient LED streetlights has been approved. Second, an energy audit of Township buildings is currently underway with the goal of recommending energyconserving improvements in building insulation, interior lighting, and heat & air conditioning, as well as the feasibility of installing solar panels. Lastly, two electric Ford F150 Lightening Special Service Vehicles have been purchased for the police department. These will be followed closely by installation of charging stations at the Municipal Building.

WILLOWS PARK PRESERVE

A Scavenger Hunt through History at The Willows Mansion owners Simon and Helen Neuman, after the repeal of the 18th Amendment. The bar room serves as a tribute to the mansion's original owner, John Sinnott, who was the owner of a distillery business and to Simon Neuman as well, who was chairman of the former Publicker Industries distillery business.

Who doesn't love a good scavenger hunt? Something about it appeals to our

inner drive to seek and find something that was lost, forgotten or hidden—sometimes in plain sight! A scavenger hunt can be a mere game - a form of entertainment at a child's birthday party - or an engaging way to teach young and old about something, like nature (Find a maple leaf! Find a bird's feather!),art (Find a Van Gogh! Find a Picasso!) or architecture (Find a cornice!

Find a pediment!).

The Willows Mansion, located in Radnor Township's Willows Park, is a great place for a scavenger hunt. There are so many treasures to be found at this magnificent old house and its surrounding property: secret compartments, decorative fixtures, relics, ruins and remains of what once was. A scavenger hunt at the Willows Mansion is fun, indeed, but it is also educational, as each discovery made during the hunt tells a story about the mansion and its history: the people who built it, the people who lived and worked there and what life at the mansion was like over the seven decades, from 1910 to the early 1970's, when it was called home by several prominent Main Line families.

4 — Terra cotta roof tiles (not too hard to find!) that were recently laid to replace asphalt roofing tiles. The new roof tiles were manufactured by the same company in Italy that made the original terra cotta roof tiles over a century ago.

5 — An art deco-style metal banister, clearly NOT the original banister (which photos show was made of wood), but lovely in its own right.

6 — Hidden cabinets that match the surrounding woodwork.

7 — A plaster dolphin.

The Willows Park Preserve, an independent, nonprofit organization that was formed to restore and revitalize the Willows Mansion, encourages you to visit the mansion and learn about its storied past and important place in local history. The mansion is open most weekdays, but it is best to contact the Willows Park Preserve in advance, by phone or email (see below), to be sure the house and the grounds immediately surrounding it are not being used for a previouslyscheduled public or private event. Of course, the Willows Park itself, which includes the pond, the picnic areas and the grassy hills, is open daily from dawn to dusk.

Preserving History: The Old Swedish Burial Ground

Students at regional schools are currently helping to uncover and preserve an important piece of history in Chester, Pennsylvania. The Old Swedish Burial Ground (St. Paul's Cemetery), located across from Chester City Hall, is the burial ground for John Morton, who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (PSSDAR) has undertaken a multi-year project to preserve this cemetery and support educational programs for youth to learn more about this site.

Main Line Network Independent Producer Eugene Hough has visited the site cemetery often over the past two years to continue the revitalization project. Pennsylvania DAR regent, Marguerite Fritsch, spearheaded this conservation effort and enlisted Hough, among others, to carry out restoration which included the removal of invasive plants, relocation of toppled headstones, and spraying of cracked monuments.

Christie Cole Logan has four ancestors from the 17th century buried in the cemetery. In 2012, Logan first came to the site as part of family genealogy research to try and find the location of her sixth great grandfather Stephen Cole, but left without an answer.

“Because of the evolution of St. Paul's and three different churches and two different church yards, it was confusing,” Logan said.

gravesite, thanks to a 1930s Historical Records Survey conducted by the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA). From there, she learned about Hough and his work restoring and preserving historic monuments in cemeteries along the east coast. Hough's process includes the utilization of ground-penetrating radar, which sends signals into the ground to search for anomalies where a grave may be located. Logan was eventually able to locate burial sites of three other ancestors through the use of that method after consulting church records. Radar imaging techniques have since led to the uncovering of over 200 monuments on the property.

“From the very first time (my husband Scott and I) came to the site in 2012, it was clear that the cemetery was neglected,” Logan said. “We had said that someday we are going to form a group for the perpetual care of this piece of land. And so once the DAR got involved and really provided a huge flush of money to get this project going, we thought that our 'someday' is now. And we have formed a Friends group and it is going to be sole care of this cemetery in its perpetuity. It needs to be more prominent in this community, state, and nation as we do have a signer of the Declaration of Independence there.”

Tommy Darlington, a current senior at Conestoga, said he was excited to be a part of the current revitalization project in Chester. “When I first came down I immediately noticed this gravesite that looked abandoned a little bit and in disrepair. I could easily see people driving past and not thinking anything of it.”

The Old Swedish Burial Ground houses a memorial obelisk for Morton, who ended up casting the deciding vote from the Pennsylvania delegation for independence on July 2, 1776. The cemetery revitalization project coincides with preparations to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The burial ground itself was on the Washington-Rochambeau Revolution Route, which was the path that French and American Armies used to reach Yorktown, the battle that effectively ended the American Revolution.

“The whole landscape of the cemetery needs to be improved and it needs to be befitting of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but it also needs to be befitting for all of those who rest there,” Logan said.

Two years ago, Hough was approached by a local historical society to help preserve two gravestones that were knocked over at the Malvern Baptist Cemetery. One of those stones marked the grave of S. Paul Teamer, who was a World War I veteran and also coached football at Conestoga High School.

Hough wanted to get the school involved and had about 30 players come out then to help with conservation efforts there.

As part of a mission to engage students and local community members in this work, Hough enlisted Tommy Darlington, a Conestoga High School Student, and his father Tom to assist. “Gene and I met at the YMCA working out,” Tom Darlington said.

“We started to talk about sports and we got into what we do for a living. He began to describe his Legacy Marker Program and I felt that there was a really good tie in with what my son is interested in and what our community needs to be interested in. We wanted to figure out how we could help and we're looking forward to spending time with Gene and other sites that may be out there within the United States.”

“We sat and talked in the graveyard thinking about (how) some of these folks here shaped how our country turned out and how we started this.” Tommy's father, Tom, said. “People just drive by it or throw trash in there and we really need to respect that and are excited about doing our little part of it, whatever that may be.”

I don't know about you, but the past month or two have felt like—a bigger than ever sensory overload of lights, decorations, music, feasting, traditions. Then suddenly it's over. Whether you're a bit relieved or feeling twinges of regret, the idea of picking up the slack to make New Year's resolutions just doesn't sound that inspiring.

But what if things that are fun actually turned out to be good for you, I mean, an immediate gratification type of good for you? Because losing a few pounds might be a good idea, and a dry January wouldn't be a bad plan either. You'll get your rhythm back after a few sessions at the gym. So keep those on the list, but let's find something that actually brings you happiness now!

A great book came out this year by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross called Your Brain On Art: How The Arts Transform Us. If you haven't read it, do…it is full of research but very readable. Meanwhile, I will borrow from it and related sources to help us kick start 2024.

Drawing, whether doodling, coloring or freehand, activates the prefrontal cortex of our brains, helping us focus. Research indicates that doodlers are analytical and retain information. Drawing in general seems to cultivate a more generous and open frame of mind.

There is something that feels especially healing about the rhythmic hand motions used to make sculptures with clay. In the process, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin are released into the brain, producing a calm, reflective state.

The ancient Greeks recognized the calming effect of reading poetry, and prescribed it as part of their medical treatments. Rhythmic and relaxing poetry triggers similar subcortical responses as listening to music.

Another centuries-old stress reliever is sound therapy with the use of sound bowls in a very peaceful setting. Sound seems to help our cardiovascular systems by increasing nitric oxide production, thus reducing anxiety, fatigue and anger. Today we know that writing is a good way to address feelings and needs and process trauma. Being outdoors may be the greatest stress reliever of all. Each of our senses responds to nature when we take the time to experience our surroundings. In recent years there has been a focus on incorporating outdoor spaces with architecture wherever possible and designing interiors that seem to bring the outdoors in, to create peaceful environments for healing and productivity.

Any of the arts can bring us happiness and extend our lives. Taking a class connects us to people we might never get to know otherwise and everyone benefits from the warmth and generosity of people who love what they are doing and are happy to share what they know. There are many organizations that offer classes for any skill level and budget. Art centers, community centers and libraries have wonderful options.

'Hands on' is just one approach—museums and galleries are another perfect way to enjoy what interests you. Universities and parks often have free or inexpensive theatre and music productions.

Classrooms using musical accompaniment have also produced higher memory test scores among adults.
