RADNOR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION 2025-2026 School Year Update in Photos
REF In the Community
The Radnor Educational Foundation continued in its 31st year of operations, working within Radnor Township School District classrooms, schools, and outdoor venues to provide more than 3,500 public school students with an incredible learning journey!
In our community this year, REF participated in the Radnor Fall Festival and Wheels of Wayne. We brought the Harlem Wizards basketball team to play a rousing game against Radnor teachers and staff at Radnor High School. Three local boutiques participated in our Shop 4 A Cause event to increase our grants funding. We also hosted several dine-out days at local restaurants and a fun outdoor photography shoot for local families to raise funds.
This 2025-2026 school year marked several achievements in our history: • We received 36 grant requests — the most in the past decade • Our grants funding was almost $90,000 — the most in the past five years • We granted funds across all our audiences: parents, students, teachers, administrators, and community organizations
We look forward to continuing to fund excellence in education in our third decade!
Radnor Middle School 7th graders read books on ancient history to Radnor's elementary school students.
Supplies for Casseroles for a Cause provided more than 200 casseroles for needy in our community.
REF provided funding for ceramics tables at Radnor High School, with more pottery wheels spinning than before!

HEALTH & WELLNESS Heat Advisory - Take Action!
Excessive Heat Warnings
Each National Weather Service Forecast Office issues some or all of the following heat-related products as conditions warrant. NWS local offices often collaborate with local partners to determine when an alert should be issued for a local area. For instance, residents of Florida are much more prepared for 90°F+ weather than residents in Alaska. Excessive Heat Warning Take Action! An Excessive Heat Warning is issued within 12 hours of the onset of extremely dangerous heat conditions. The general rule of thumb for this Warning is when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 105° or higher for at least 2 days and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75°; however, these criteria vary across the country, especially for areas not used to extreme heat conditions. If you don't take precautions immediately when conditions are extreme, you may become seriously ill or even die. Excessive Heat Watches Be Prepared! Heat watches are issued when conditions are favorable for an excessive heat event in the next 24 to 72 hours. A Watch is used when the risk of a heat wave has increased but its occurrence and timing is still uncertain.
A Heat Advisory is issued within 12 hours of the onset of extremely dangerous heat conditions. The general rule of thumb for this Advisory is when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 100° or higher for at least 2 days, and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75°; however, these criteria vary across the country, especially for areas that are not used to dangerous heat conditions. Take precautions to avoid heat illness. If you don't take precautions, you may become seriously ill or even die.
Excessive Heat Outlooks are issued when the potential exists for an excessive heat event in the next 3-7 days. An Outlook provides information to those who need considerable lead-time to prepare for the event.
As an example, if the air temperature is 96°F and the relative humidity is 65%, the heat index--how hot it feels--is 121°F. The red area without numbers indicates extreme danger. The National Weather Service will initiate alert procedures when the Heat Index is expected to exceed 105°-110°F (depending on local climate) for at least 2 consecutive days. NWS also offers a Heat Index chart for area with high heat but low relative humidity. Since heat index values were devised for shady, light wind conditions, exposure to full sunshine can increase heat index values by up to 15°F. Also, strong winds, particularly with very hot, dry air, can be extremely hazardous.
Understanding the Heat Index The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. To find the Heat Index temperature, look at the Heat Index Chart.

When the body heats too rapidly to cool itself properly, or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, body temperature rises and you or someone you care about may experience a heat-related illness. It is important to know the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate responses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides a list of warning signs and symptoms of heat illness, and recommended first aid steps. Some of these symptoms and steps are listed below.

Symptoms: • Altered mental state • One or more of the following symptons: throbbing headache, confusion, nausea, dizziness, shallow breathing Body temperature above 103°F Hot, red, dry or moist skin Rapid and strong pulse Faints, loses consciousness
Heat Cramps
Heat cramps may be the first sign of heatrelated illness, and may lead to heat exhaustion or stroke. Symptoms: Painful muscle cramps and spasms usually in legs and abdomen - Heavy sweating First Aid: Apply firm pressure on cramping muscles or gently massage to relieve spasm. Give sips of water unless the person complains of nausea, then stop giving water

VOTING TOPICS FREEDOM OF THE PRESS national security purposes, criminalized free speech and opinion while the U.S. was at war. Both were repealed within five years, but national security remained a concern with extensive media coverage of politics. A well-known Supreme Court ruling concerned the so-called “Pentagon Papers”. In 1971, both the New York Times and the Washington Post had accessed classified information about the country's involvement in the Vietnam War. The court ruled in favor of the press, stating that it would be a violation of the First Amendment to prohibit the publication of these documents.
“Weaponization” is a popular word in today's world. It often describes the way in which laws and regulations can be used to attack rights and freedoms through governmental power, intimidation, and/or judicial action. Whether it is used for revenge, for distraction, or security, many are concerned. As we celebrate America 250, our forefathers were keenly aware of potential threats to individuals, groups, and institutions to become silenced, punished, or restricted. Thus, the First Amendment to the Constitution was their initial priority when they drafted the Bill of Rights.
Over time, the Supreme Court has ruled to limit freedom of the press. As early as 1812, in the case United States v. Hudson & Goodwin (1812) and again in 1964 with New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, the Supreme Court affirmed the ability of the government to prosecute libel, or the defamation of a person or company by publishing a knowingly false statement.

In 1786, Thomas Jefferson noted, “Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.”
This right, however, is a double-edged sword. Social change, such as that embodied in the civil rights and suffrage movements, have wielded this liberty as a weapon in fights for respect, power, and the further expansion of the Constitution. What can we learn from history? In 1798, just five years after the adoption of the Bill of Rights, the Sedition Act was passed during the presidency of John Adams. This law allowed for the journalists to be punished who criticized the acts of the government which at this time was engaged in an undeclared war with France. During the Act's three-year lifespan, more than fifteen journalists, including Benjamin Franklin's grandson, were fined or arrested. While only a few individuals were punished, many newspapers softened their dissent. The then- opposition Democrat-Republican Party was silenced as the Federalists described the opposing perspective as “misinformation.”

In the past 200 years, debate over the freedom of the press has continued. In 1917, the Espionage Act was passed by Congress, followed a year later by a new Sedition Act. These acts, designed for
defamation and national security issues, freedom of the press is not guaranteed. However, its ultimate goal — to seek the truth and shine a light on the goings-on in government — is vital to our democracy. We cannot afford to take the freedoms provided by the First Amendment for granted, nor should we allow our government to erode them. The League of Women Voters declared a Constitutional Crisis in April of 2025 and currently promotes actions to help you make a difference:
With the advent of social media and the isolation created by COVID-19, polarization has become more prevalent and misinformation more commonplace. Policies and directives are increasingly playing a role in placing guardrails around press freedom. For example, to combat earlier pressure placed on social media by the Biden administration to prevent the spread of disinformation regarding COVID19, Executive Order 14149, signed by President Trump on the first day of his second term, was called “Restoring Freedom of Speech and Ending Federal Censorship.” On the other hand, the White House currently determines which reporters can and cannot attend certain events. This, in turn, creates conditions for unequal coverage of political affairs by diverse media outlets where evaluating sources and journalistic ethics are vital.
Some two centuries later, the renowned and trusted journalist Walter Cronkite (19162009) said, “Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy; it is democracy.”

RADNOR SHADE TREE COMMISSION Caretakers of the Canopy One of the Shade Tree Commission's roles is to ensure the health, safety and growth of Radnor's tree canopy. The benefits for our residents and even surrounding communities from tree canopies are numerous: temperature regulation, air quality improvement, stormwater management, biodiversity/wildlife support, energy conservation, economic value and aesthetic enhancement. A vital program in which the Shade Tree Commission safeguards our canopy health is by hosting two annual tree plantings. Former Shade Tree Chair, Eileen Brett recognized a need for the Township to begin a planting project to replace trees removed due to storm damage, disease, age or land development. Under Eileen's leadership, in 2020 the Commission embarked on this mission planting 158 trees in the Wayne Business District, in front of residents' houses, and in Radnor Parks. In conjunction with the Philadelphia Horticultural Society, since that first planting in 2020, the Shade Tree Commission has planted over 1,200 trees in the Township! This has allowed Radnor to maintain a 50% plus tree canopy over our 13 square mile township. This program has grown to two events annually — a Spring planting and a Fall planting. Much of our success is the result of Radnor resident volunteers, along with local arborists and landscape companies. If you are interested in joining one of our tree planting events, please check the Radnor Township Shade Tree Commission website for details regarding the upcoming Fall planting — it is a fun morning for all ages.

Sports Legends Museum Honors Joey Crawford been able to survive over 50 years of marriage together and she replied with an answer full of the wit we've come to expect from Joe himself. "[Mary told me that] after the season was over, [she and Joe] would go to a restaurant on Tuesday night and Friday night and have a romantic dinner," Donato said. "'Yes, Joe went on Tuesday and I went on Friday.'” Joey Crawford has traveled to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame's museum before as a visitor, but this summer he will leave as a member, joining seven other individuals in the Class of 2026. "For decades, Joe has stood at the center of sports' biggest moments. He brought something every game needed: fairness, consistency, professionalism, and courage," Donato said. "[Joey Crawford] made Delaware County proud.” This summer, this birthplace of basketball will honor one of Delaware County's own. On August 15th, Havertown native Joey Crawford will become the nineteenth referee inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. "It's not too often you get the opportunity to introduce someone whose accomplishments at work are such that he'll be recognized as one of the greatest referees of all-time," said former NBA referee Steve Javie, who introduced Crawford at a June luncheon in Radnor. "In my unbiased opinion, he's not one of the greatest referees of all time, he's the greatest referee that ever put a shirt on and blew a whistle on a basketball court and, believe me, it's the truth because I've worked with the guy and I've seen the others. He's the best ever.” Numbers are often a key component to candidacy bids for any Hall of Fame. Joey Crawford's 39-year career spanned 2,561 games, a resume that includes 374 playoff contests and 50 NBA Finals games. Javie refereed over 1,000 games in the NBA himself and believes that box scores alone don't begin to tell the story about Crawford as a person. According to Javie, even though Joe has always defined himself as a referee, he's actually defined by a different set of numbers: 54, 3, and 10.
Located inside the Radnor Township Municipal building, the Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum houses multiple galleries devoted to well-known stars from numerous sports. Some of Crawford's memorabilia is housed on-site as part of what Museum Curator Jim Vankoski calls the "eclectic gallery." Vankoski welcomed a few of those personalities on June 6th as part of its Steve Berman Speaker Series, featuring Keynote Speaker Joey Crawford. "I don't know where else to go other than complete thanks of being a CYO referee and going to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame," he said. Crawford still remembers his first weekend "working 13 games in little tiny gyms" in the greater Philadelphia area as an 18-year-old.

Bob Donato, a Delaware County Athletics Hall of Fame member, closed the afternoon by harkening back to Javie's earlier words regarding Crawford the person and his commitment to family. Donato recalled asking Joe's wife Mary about how they've
"Fifty four years married to his childhood sweetheart, three children, and ten grandchildren, that's his legacy," Javie said. "That's the man Joe Crawford." And that doesn't even include the countless number of people and organizations that Crawford has helped along the way without asking for anything in return. Where Community Meets Connection: Building a Space for Both at the Willows Mansion
This spring, Radnor Middle School hosted its 3rd annual Spring Concert in the Willows Mansion courtyard. This yearly event is always a pleasure to attend, and one that signals an exciting beginning to the summer season of events at the Willows Mansion. Just in front of the Mansion's picturesque rear facade and facing the restored fountain wall, rows of parents, family members, and friends gather to support our talented Radnor School District students. The trees surrounding the Willows Park's Skunk Hollow Trail are lush and green again. The weather is warm, and the Mansion's balcony doors are open, letting music and laughter from the guests and performers below fill the historic Willows Mansion with the sounds of a shared experience and a sense of community. For many of these guests, this was not their first time at the Willows Mansion — the grand historic house situated at the top of the hill in Radnor Township's idyllic Willows Park. Many of them have fond memories of their high school prom, their wedding, or some other celebration within these walls, often from long before the Mansion was shuttered due to the high cost of maintaining the century-old building. Others have more recent memories from programs that have taken place since the Mansion reopened in 2019 under the nonprofit Willows Park Preserve. Each year that the Willows Park Preserve has the opportunity to host these students brings an exciting reminder of how the Willows Mansion can foster connection. This spring season in particular has been ripe with community-building events like this one and more.
Beginning in February and continuing throughout the spring and summer, the Willows Park Preserve is also excited to host a brandnew wellness speaker series offered in partnership with mental health nonprofit Root to Branch. This ongoing monthly series hosts supportive discussions with qualified speakers on a variety of topics, from mental health and stress, to addiction, family struggles, and more. The Willows Park Preserve has been overjoyed to see both new and old faces gather monthly in the Mansion's solarium to learn, grow, and build community connections in a safe and beautiful setting.
Between student concerts, classes, thoughtful discussions, old events and new favorites, the Willows Mansion has been bustling so far in 2026. Though the Willows Park Preserve continues to honor the Mansion's place as a longstanding and historical family home, we are even more excited to see it reborn as a space for wellness, relaxation, culture, and connection.
For instance, just a few weeks before the Middle School concert, the Willows Park Preserve completed its 5th annual Wellness Week, offering 18 free wellness classes to members of the community aimed at strengthening mental, physical, and emotional health, for all ages and abilities. This included a health fair with more than twenty informative vendors and local resources and the annual Wellness Lunch which enabled community members near and far to gather for a healthy lunch and learn about self-care and personal wellness from this year's guest speaker. During this week of activities, there were countless moments of meaningful connection, networking, and community building. Wellness Week is one of the most unique events that we offer here at the Willows Mansion, and it is hard to imagine a more thoughtful use of the space than as a place where the community can gather to move, talk, connect, and learn from one another. 28 RADNOR NEWS · SUMMER 2026
