Coronavirus: What's safe, what's not and how to protect yourself and others.

As warm weather approaches, many people are looking for some relief after a months-long cabin fever. Much is still unknown about COVID-19 and what's to come, but we have the answers to some common questions.

Should I use public transportation?

Most major cities have adopted rigorous cleaning standards to ensure that subways, trains and buses are frequently cleaned. You don't need to avoid these modes of transportation, but you should make sure you have a mask with you and some hand sanitizer to use until you're able to wash your hands.

Can I still go to the doctor?

Not only can you still see your doctor, but you absolutely should if you're experiencing new symptoms unrelated to a current diagnosis or you have a time-sensitive medical issue. Remember: Don't delay receiving careeven in the midst of a pandemic.

Airlines continue to offer flights, too, and you might be tempted to book travel at cheap rates. If air travel is necessary to get you somewhere you need to be, you can fly. Most airlines now require masks to be worn in-flight, but you should bring a few other items with you, too: · Food and beverages · Your own light blanket · Disinfecting wipes to clean your seat and area

Even if your issue isn't a time-sensitive one, chances are your doctor may still want to find a way to see you. Most health care providers, including Main Line Health, now offer telemedicineservices to allow patients to connect with their doctors virtually.

What about the dentist?

Dental emergencies can happen, too.

Emergencies like toothaches and a cracked or lost tooth often can't wait.

While you won't be able to wear a mask during your visit, dentists clean and disinfect their tools regularly to minimize risk of infection.

If it's not an emergency and you're scheduled for a routine cleaning, it's up to you whether or not to postpone your appointment.

When can I see my family and friends again?

We all miss our family and friends, but if we start to forego practices like masking or social distancing, we risk infecting the people we love and our timeline for a full return to 'normal' gets even longer.

If you're planning time outdoors or a visit with others, here are a few things to remember: · Do spend time outdoors · Do keep your circle small · Don't return to hugs and handshakes · Don't share a picnic basket · Do continue preventive measures

Can I go to the beach?

You can go to the beachas long as you can continue to keep your distance from others.If you can't maintain at least six feet of distance between yourself and others, in and out of the water, then it's best to stay home or find another activity. The same rules go for community or backyard pools, too.

Can I take my kids to the movies? What about the playground?

COVID-19 is making it much harder for parents and caregivers to find safe, socially-distant activities to keep kids busy.

Movie theaters and playgrounds are crowded and high-touch, which means a high risk of spreading all kinds of infections. Instead, look for activities that you can do at home - try sidewalk chalk and art projects, jumping rope, hula hooping or even planting a garden.

Should I send my child to summer camp?

Remember: Prevention is the best medicine!

Measures that were put in place at the beginning of this pandemic have proven effective in helping “flatten the curve” and prevent the spread of coronavirus.

But we're not done yet.

Businesses, restaurants, beaches, pools…these will all start to reopen, but we can't let our guard down yet.

COVID-19 is still a very real risk in our community, and we all have a responsibility to continue to practice safe habits that protect ourselves and others.

Most summer camps cancelled their sessions several weeks ago, but if your child's camp still hasn't canceled, it's best to err on the side of caution.

Experts say that until more information is available about COVID-19 it's best to keep kids home from camp, especially if it's overnight.

Are haircuts safe?

If you can wear a mask and be certain that you'll be one of only three or four people in the salon, it's likely safe to get your haircut. Before you make an appointment, make sure you talk to your stylist about safety measures that have been put in place.

Parenting Corner Teens in quarantine: Helping teenagers through missed moments amidst COVID-19

As far as young adults who might have concerns about what this means for their future, it can be helpful to remind them that everyone who is preparing to receive them into their new environments knows that ALL people have been affected by this. Being at home doesn’t preclude them from preparing for the future. They can set up a schedule and have goals for what they would like to be doing when this is over – either by themselves or with the help of people online.

Navigating teenage emotions during COVID-19: Insights for parents from child and adolescent psychiatrist, Dr. Sood Dr. Bela Sood, child and adolescent psychiatrist, offers some insight for parents on how to help teens of all grade levels navigate the emotions of missing friends and missing out as a result of COVID-19.

How are teens different from younger children in terms of mental health during this time?

It’s common to lump kids into one group, but teens have very different developmental needs than small children. Adolescents tend to start detaching from their families and developing stronger connections with their peers and social groups. They remain very keenly aware of how their parents are feeling and keep an ear out to what parents are saying, but do not show it…on the surface their friends are the ones they turn to.

So, you can imagine that this social distancing and lack of face-to-face connection with peers is a major stressor for them in contrast to younger kids who are very content being with their parents. It can also be hard for teens to understand how all of the rules and mandates apply to them and the importance of their role in this. It may be worth reiterating what a noxious virus this is and the fact that they can catch it or they can be asymptomatic carriers, bring it home and cause others to be sick, including grandparents and other loved ones.

However, it’s important to validate their feelings and acknowledge any anger that may exist. Recognize how important prom, the last stretch of school and graduation are.

This could be re-framed as – “this year of high school is now ‘extra special’ and you’ll remember it throughout your life.” We can also challenge them to produce memories and projects that are unique to this time to help make the most of the situation.

How can parents encourage teens to open up so we can validate their feelings and help them through this situation?

Everyone who has raised teenagers has struggled with this challenge, with one situation or another. Teenagers are not typically going to solicit your advice. As parents we have to understand that this isn’t personal.

Try to make your communication with them as non-threatening as possible. Maybe your family can agree to have dinner together each day. One of the advantages of this pandemic is that people have the time to do that.

This is a good time to find out how everyone is feeling. You might even talk about your own vulnerability.

You don’t have to lose control of your emotions, but you can gently share your own feelings and your teenager might join in.

Normalizing their feelings is also very important – “How must it feel to not be around your friends? How must it feel to have been looking forward to an event that is now not going to happen? That must be so disappointing.” You can share your own disappointments in missing out on things you had planned so they know they are not alone in feelings of sadness or frustration.

What are some things that might be stressors for teenagers at this time?

A big thing is missing out on important and sentimental life events, particularly for those who are graduating from high school. This is their last experience before they become young adults and it’s a rite of passage that feels like they have been “robbed of.” It is sure to cause high emotions and feelings of frustration, which may include resentment.

Most importantly, it is acknowledging their loss and knowing that it’s validated by the significant people in their life. And then, it’s time to move on. That’s the nature of loss like this – you have to accept it and then figure out how things are going to work out for you.

In addition to talking over family dinners, what are some other ways parents can make this time less stressful for teens?

As humans, we’re creatures of habit so creating a loose schedule for the day and sticking with it as much as possible can be helpful for everyone. When kids go to school

there is a set of guidelines for how the day is going to go, and often it’s the unpredictability of not knowing that causes anxiety.

Spending time with family is a great thing to do these days. Maybe your teenager will let you into their world a little bit – you can find out what’s trending in the teen world. Talk about things that are important to them and focus on things they’ve wanted to do, but don’t usually have the time for. We’ve seen videos of teens teaching their parents to use TikTok and making funny videos together.

Look at the opportunities this time can bring and take advantage of them.

Families choose Radnor Township schools for many reasons: new

families move here for their children to receive an exemplary education; proud alumni with fond memories return to raise their children in Radnor; young parents remain in the district to send their growing children to great schools with their friends and neighbors.

In every community, neighbors are sometimes called upon to support each other. In Radnor, we have a

tradition of offering support when a student is facing financial hardship which affects his ability to participate fully in school life. Sometimes a guidance counselor, at times a teacher, and often our school principals become aware of a family facing disruption in their ability to meet basic life needs including housing, utilities, food and clothing. Because Radnor is a caring community with abundant resources available to our schools and homes, our school personnel have been able to assist families facing temporary need and create sustainability within their family system.

REF's Neighbors Helping Neighbors has been supporting Radnor families since 2013, working with Radnor Township School District social workers who have a direct line to those families experiencing loss of income, health issues, food insecurity and other serious hardships which affect a student's ability to be what is most important - a student. RTSD social workers Ceire Evans and Christine Kulp tell us “Neighbors Helping Neighbors provides an opportunity for the family to remain in stable housing. Research shows that frequent moves during school-age years may have adverse outcomes in adulthood. We work closely with the identified family to make certain we are tapping in to all county and local resources, and having 8

NHN as a funding stream may help all students access the wonderful education within the Radnor School District.”

provides assistance, accountability and transparency, while still maintaining privacy for recipients and allowing those who wish to support the program the security of a taxdeductible donation to a registered 501(c)(3) organization. REF directs 100% of all donations restricted to Neighbors Helping Neighbors to assist families in need. These funds do not replace vital donations needed to support other REF programs serving the schools and students of Radnor Township School District.

In this extraordinary time, our community and our schools have experienced changes and challenges never thought possible. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Radnor is seeing a dramatic rise in financial, health and home life hardships, spurring our school community into action to help. Summer Safety Tips Beach Safety - Understanding Rip Currents

A rip current is a narrow, fast-moving channel of water that starts near the beach and extends offshore through the line of breaking waves.

If you do get caught in a rip current, the best thing you can do is stay calm. It's not going to pull you underwater, it's just going to pull you away from shore.

Call and wave for help. You want to float, and you don't want to swim back to shore against the rip current because it will just tire you out. You want to swim out of the rip, parallel to shore, along the beach and then follow breaking waves back to shore at an angle.

When you first get to the beach, the best thing you can do is swim near a lifeguard.

And then if you have questions about if the conditions are hazardous or not, ask a lifeguard. And then many beaches have things like a flag system, or other forms of communication to be able to tell you if the conditions are hazardous.

But if you go to a beach without a lifeguard, when you get there, you want to make sure you know how to spot a rip current, and if you get caught in one, know how to get out.

And then when you go in the water, always bring flotation.

Always let a lifeguard make a rip current rescue, because often, the people that try to make rescues themselves end up being the

ones who drown. Instead, the best way to help is to throw them something that floats and immediately get a lifeguard for help.

Spotting a rip current can be difficult, and really needs some practice. But when you go to the beach, start off by staying back from the water. Rip currents are easier to see at an elevated position, like a dune line or beach access, and then look for places where waves aren't breaking, so flat spots in the line of breaking waves. And then also where there's maybe foam or sediment in the water being transported away from the beach offshore.

Before you go to the beach, always check your local beach conditions. Look at the wave forecast. If you have waves two to three feet high or greater, you could have strong rip currents. And then look to see if there's a hazardous rip current statement for your local beach. And then always check the tide as well.

So rip currents often occur at low tide, and so if you're going to the beach during a period of low tide, just be mindful that strong rip currents could occur.

People often misunderstand and think that rip currents only occur during bad-weather days at the beach but actually, you can have strong rip currents with sunny days and waves of only about two to three feet high.

And the reason for that is that rip currents aren't really caused by the weather. They're caused by the waves and other factors like the tide and the shape of the bottom.

Rip currents can occur anywhere you have breaking waves, like large sandy beaches on the open ocean. But they can also occur where you have hard structures, like jetties, or piers, or even rocks jutting out into the ocean.

In terms of the tide, usually rip currents are going to occur more at low tide when you have waves breaking over the sandbar near shore. And that's the third part, the sandbars. Usually you're going to have strong rip currents where you have significant sandbar near the shore with a channel in it.

Adding an extra safety step around the water can make all the difference.

You can never know which safety step will save a life until it does.

EAGLES MERE—SUMMER CAMP FOR ADULTS Imagine waking to fresh cool air, sounds of owls hooting, woodpeckers drilling, and wandering with a steaming latté to the lake's edge to see eagles fishing on Pennsylvania's second highest natural glacial lake. What could be a more inviting way to begin the day, every day? Your kids left the house 30 minutes ago on their bicycles to join in at “Sports Week” at the beach. Today you have a choice - sneak away and get some needed personal time, catch up on your reading, play golf….whatever…the kids are safe and engaged all day in the athletic program, prowling the woods as part of the guided outdoor conservation program, taking tennis and golf lessons, or just hanging out with friends. Life feels like a throwback to the 50's and 60's, a less pressured time. Is this summer camp for the kids or for the adults?

Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania is unique. It is a 2 ½ hour drive from Philadelphia, deep in the Endless Mountain region of Pennsylvania. a William Flynn designed “links” course (think Merion), boundless preserved woodlands and trails, organized mountain and road biking, hiking, canoeing and sailing, tennis, croquet, summer arts, antique, and craft shows, shopping, museums galore, and more recently a revived Chautauqua. Engage as little or as much as you desire. Famous artists make it their home. The town boasts three Olympic Gold medal winners. There are noted authors and photographers. There is something for everyone.

The town's one remaining historic hotel is the Eagles Mere Inn (1887), seventeen rooms and three unique restaurants (www.eaglesmereinn.com).

Spotted Lanternfly Alert The Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive species native to China, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. In 2014 it was found in Pennsylvania, and has since spread to 26 counties which are now quarantined.

If you see a Spotted Lanternfly, it's imperative to immediately report it online or via phone by calling 1-888-4BADFLY. Especially if you are not inside the quarantine zone.

What else?

Kill it! Squash it, smash it...

just get rid of it. In the fall, these bugs will lay egg masses with 30-50 eggs each. These are called bad bugs for a reason, don't let them take over your county next.

Why?

The Spotted Lanternfly causes serious damage in trees including oozing sap, wilting, leaf curling, and tree dieback. In addition to tree damage, when spotted lanternflies feed, they excrete a sugary substance, called honeydew, that encourages the growth of black sooty mold. This mold is harmless to people, however it causes damage to plants. In counties infested and quarantined for Spotted Lanternfly, residents report hundreds of these bad bugs that affect their quality of life and ability to enjoy the outdoors during the spring and summer months. Spotted Lanternflies will cover trees, swarm in the air, and their honeydew can coat decks and play equipment.

In addition to damaging trees and affecting quality of life, the Spotted Lanternfly is a huge threat to Pennsylvania agriculture industry. They threaten billions of economic impact and hundreds of thousands of jobs for those in the grapes, apple, hops, and hardwood industries.

Identification

The Spotted Lanternfly adult is approximately 1" long and 1/2" wide at rest.

The forewing is grey with black spots and the wings tips are reticulated black blocks outlined in grey. The hind wings have contrasting patches of red and black with a white band. The legs and head are black; the abdomen is yellow with broad black bands.

Immature stages are black with white spots, and develop red patches as they grow.

Landscaping & Gardening Trees: Critical Partners For Health And Environment If you are getting concerned about surging stormwater and rising summer temperatures, you may pause to appreciate your neighborhood trees. Trees are a cost effective way to reduce stormwater runoff and reduce and offset carbon emissions, a key to slowing climate change.

Many people know about the benefits of trees, some of which include increased carbon sequestration, improved air quality, and wildlife habitat preservation.

Researchers have also identified a surprising number of other ways we benefit from trees, benefits that may vary from reduced recovery times for hospital patients to increased property values ($700 per mature tree, according to a Wharton study cited by the Local Government Commission).

Important for our community, trees play an important part in reducing and managing stormwater runoff.

Particularly deserving of our protection are our mature trees, which have been determined to capture and store greater amounts of carbon relative to medium-aged and young trees due in part to their extensive and active root systems. Trees absorb air pollution - Through their leaf surfaces, trees absorb pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxides while also intercepting dust, pollen, and smoke. Trees freshen the air as they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis. According to the Local Government Commission, 100 large trees can remove 1,000 pounds of pollutants every year. (“Livable Communities and Urban Forests”).

Trees also save energy and create cooling effects by transpiring moisture and shading buildings. They reduce winter utility bills by reducing wind speeds thus curbing winter heat losses in homes.

In addition to the benefits to humans, trees play a critical role in conserving habitat for our local wildlife, including the many bird and butterfly species whose numbers have declined due to habitat loss. To take advantage of all these benefits, be proactive in saving the trees on your property and in your neighborhood. Replace lost trees with native tree species, both deciduous and evergreen. To provide the most ecological benefits to you and to wildlife, add a layered understory of shrubs, grasses, flowering plants, with a healthy layer of leaf litter underneath it all.

How Trees Help Reduce Stormwater Runoff

Large trees have hundreds of square feet of leaf area to intercept and store rainfall. Tree canopy cover increases the lag time of the rain hitting the ground, from minutes to sometimes hours, significantly reducing rainfall impact. Penn State Extension reports that in both urban and suburban settings, a single deciduous tree can intercept from 500 to 760 gallons and a mature evergreen can intercept more than 4,000 gallons annually (learn more at “The Role of Trees and Forests in Healthy Watersheds” Penn State Extension, August, 2015.)

The intercepted water moves slowly to the base of the tree ('throughfall' and 'stemflow'), allowing infiltration into the soil, where a tree's extensive root system takes up some of the water while some percolates into the aquifer. A significant amount of water also evaporates from a tree's leafy canopy and from leaf litter on the ground, cooling local temperatures and returning moisture to the atmosphere.

Having mature trees on your property can increase infiltration and reduce runoff eightfold, according to Eric Kuehler of the USDA Forest Service.

How Trees Clean Our Air and Help Offset Carbon Emissions

Trees store carbon - Bronson Briscom, Director of Forest Carbon Science at The Nature Conservancy, points out that humans have created a 40 percent increase in the amount of atmospheric carbon since the Industrial Revolution began. Deforestation from agriculture and development is a big culprit, creating about 25 percent of all human greenhouse gas emissions, according to Briscom. He and fellow scientists published an analysis showing that 16

Stormwater Management How Your Lawn Effects Water Quality Flooding, water quality, and other stormwater issues may seem too big for one person's actions to have impact, but this is not necessarily true. Activities such as mowing and fertilizing your lawn have an impact on water resources.

A stormwater friendly lawn is one that can absorb rainwater and does not harm local streams by the over-application of chemicals.

Likewise, a stormwater friendly garden is one that uses organic compost as fertilizer and also minimizes or eliminates the use of chemicals.

By spreading grass clippings on your lawn, you can reduce the amount of fertilizer needed. If mulching is not possible, bag the clippings and store them in a compost area where the organic material can be used as a fertilizer as a later date. It is important to keep clippings out of storm drains and the street where they could end up in a storm drain taking the clippings directly to local streams. There they decompose and act as major pollutants increasing nitrogen to unsafe levels for fish and other aquatic life.

Set your mower height to 3 inches or higher.

Taller grass slows the rate of runoff and will produce a deeper and denser root system.

Deeper roots have access to more water stored in the ground and can reduce irrigation needed during droughts. Dense roots will absorb more water, reducing lawn runoff and preventing erosion. Keep grass clippings and chopped leaves on the lawn.

The clippings decompose quickly, provide important nutrients and create an organic layer that encourages stormwater infiltration.

Clippings left on your lawn will biodegrade quickly because they are 90% water. It should not cause thatch buildup. If the grass is very high (say, after returning from a vacation), consider making two cuts: a "trim" with the mower set high, followed a few days later by a cut to your regular length. This will give the clippings a chance to degrade into the lawn and avoid having long clippings covering the lawn.

While many insects are harmless to people and play a role in maintaining a healthy lawn or garden, some create problems. Once you identify the pests you have, consult an expert for a non-chemical alternative to controlling them.

Disposing of grass clippings is the most laborintensive part of mowing the lawn for many homeowners. You can skip all that work and let your grass clippings fertilize your lawn for free.

Start mowing by making two or three passes blowing grass clippings into the center of your lawn, not the street or driveway. Make sure to mow when grass is dry so that clippings do not clump together. Set the mower to a height of 2½ to 3 inches to better hide clippings and keep a healthier lawn.

Mow weekly in the spring and as needed through the summer.

To be sure you are giving your yard the nutrients it needs and not providing too much fertilizer, test your soil. Contact your local Penn State Extension office to order a soil test kit.

For your lawn and your streams, keep your grass clippings on your lawn. Your wallet will also appreciate the change, as you will need fewer fertilizers and less water.

Grass clippings contain nitrogen and phosphorus and can fertilize your lawn naturally. This can cut or eliminate the need for additional fertilizers, which can damage our streams. Clippings can also be

Washing Your Vehicle Home Car Wash Tips: Where you wash your car matters.

The best option for our rivers is to take your vehicle to a commercial car wash, especially if you plan to clean the engine or the bottom of the car.

Most car washes reuse water several times before sending it on to a water pollution control plant.

Wash your vehicle on gravel, grass, or another permeable surface so the ground can filter the water naturally.

Vehicles washed in driveways and parking lots allow dirty wash water to find its way to the nearest storm drain. That water often contains oils and grease, phosphates (from the soap) and heavy metals—all substances that are unhealthy for people, fish, and other living things.

Use a hose that is high pressure and low volume. Fit your hose with a nozzle that automatically turns off, or has a pistol grip or trigger nozzle to save water.

Wash one section at a time and rinse quickly.

If you would rather wash your car at home, protect our local streams with these tips:

Use soap sparingly and try to use non-phosphate detergents.

Phosphates are pollutants that can be harmful to nearby waterways and promote excess growth of algae.

When you are done, empty the bucket of soapy water down the sink—not into the street.

If you are hosting a car wash fundraiser, consider selling coupon books. Many car wash companies offer fundraiser savings books to nonprofit organizations and sports teams at reduced prices. The coupons can then be used anytime by the supporter.

Pet Safety & Helpful Tips National Pet Preparedness Month

If there's one thing that the recent events surrounding the pandemic has taught us is that being prepared is a crucial & often overlooked concept.

From the lack of toilet paper to shortages in batteries, multiple medication backorders and no critical care supplies, the list goes on & on & on. As focused as we've been on the essentials for us humans - and this is as it should be - let us not forget that it's equally important to not lose sight of our furry family members & their needs.

Many of our canine & feline companions are also on long-term medications and/or prescription diets. Some need additional support in the forms of enrichment and/or behavioral interventions, and they are just as susceptible to the feelings of depression and anxiety during times like these. Having an adequate

supply of their food & medications, supportive care provided and/or providers in place, and ways to alleviate and address their stressors are just a few of the ways we need to provide our best friends with the care they need and deserve.

Some other suggestions and thoughts to keep in mind are to ensure your pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations, have necessary ID tags/licenses, and are microchipped.

With the summer months and the subsequent loud events that come along at this time of year - fireworks & thunderstorms - can bring the potential for spooked pets and escapees.

Another thing to be aware of are when other disaster-type events take place such as weather-related incidents, emergencies and/or accidents is to have a First Aid or Emergency Kit solely designated for the furry members of your family.
