DON’T FORGET TO VOTE What's Up on May 17th?

It's Primary Election Day in Radnor!

You can find all the election information you need at one stop - the League of Women Voters' Vote411.

What's on the ballot? This is your chance to decide who will be on the November ballot. Candidates chosen on May 17th will vie for U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative for House District 5 as well as Pennsylvania Governor and Lieutenant Governor. This year all voters in Radnor will opt for candidates for the 168th PA representative district currently held by Christopher Quinn. Previously, Radnorth Township was divided between the 165 district now held

by PA Representative Jennifer O'Mara and the 166th, the current seat of Representative Greg Vitali. Unlike other Pennsylvanians who live in even-numbered PA Senate Districts or whose incumbents no longer live in the revised PA Districts, Radnor voters will not select candidates for the PA Senate seat currently held by Amanda Cappalletti until 2024.

Why are you in a different legislative district? This is a result of the constitutionally mandated redistricting process that occurs every ten years following the Census. It is a timeconsuming, politically charged process with the final PA congressional and legislative map ultimately decided by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Radnor remains in District 5 for the U.S. House of Representatives and in District 17 for the PA State Senate. Will you have a voice on May 17th?

That depends. Pennsylvania has a closed primary so you must be registered as either a Republican or a Democrat to vote.

Independents and non-affiliated voters have no choice in choosing candidates for November unless they change their party affiliation. Your vote determines only the candidates of your designated party; the winners of the May primary will appear on the November ballot. A change in your party affiliation does not obligate you to vote for a candidate of that party in November. It is easy to change your name, address, or party affiliation by simply changing such information through the registration process.

First, you need to meet the May 2nd deadline for voter registration. · To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen, a Pennsylvania resident at your current address for at least 30 days before the election, and be 18 years of age or older by May 17th. If you're not in 6

prison or on parole for a felony, you are also eligible to register to vote. · You need to complete a registration form either on line through VOTE 411 orby mail (forms are availableat the Radnor Memorial Library, Township Building, and State Liquor Stores). All registrations must be received before 4:30 p.m. on May 2ndat the Voter Service Center in the Delaware County Government Center Building, 201 W. Front Street, Media.

Second, you need to make sure you are registered. · Once registered, within 14 days you should receive a voter identification card. If not, call the Voter Registration Office at 610.891.4659. · Verify your voter registration status at VOTE411 Third, proof of identification, such as a driver's license, is needed only if · you are a first-time voter. · you are new to your polling place.

How will you vote? Once you are registered to vote, you can choose to vote in person or by mail through a no-excuse or absentee ballot. All ballots are secure and on paper so they are easily traced and audited, if necessary. If you wish to vote in person, go to VOTE 411 to find your polling place. Although there will be no changes in your ward or precinct until after the 2022 elections, polling places may change. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. If there is any question about your right to vote, always cast a provisional ballot. The Judge of Elections can usually get answers you may need. However, if you experience or see problems, call Election Protection, 866.OUR.VOTE. If you wish to vote by mail, the deadline for an application to vote by mail is 5:00 p.m. on May 10th, seven days before the election. Some of you may have already received a notification about your “permanent” annual mail in ballots that you must apply for each year. You can apply for one or both elections in May and/or November. Once you receive your mail-in ballot, it must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day. It can be mailed postage free or hand-delivered by only the voter to the drop box at the Radnor Township Building, the Media Voter Service Center, or any drop box in Delaware County. To be

counted, mail-in ballots must be enclosed in a secrecy envelope that must be signed and dated by the voter. Remember, No Naked Ballots!

If you wish to vote early and in person, you can go to the Media Voter Service Center prior to May 10th. Bring identification so you can apply, receive the mail-in ballot, complete the mail-in ballot, and drop it in the box. This is also an option if you have not received your requested mail-in ballot.

Each ballot has a barcode that can be voided to ensure that each voter may only vote once.

If you change your mind and have a paper ballot but wish to vote in person, you must bring the entire mail-in ballot with its secrecy envelope to the polling place.

Workers at the polls will follow procedures to make sure each eligible person has only one vote!

Who are the candidates? Although sample ballots may not be available until late April, there are more than twenty candidates running for U.S. Senate and more than ten for Pennsylvania's Governor. Regardless of party affiliation, almost every seat is contested. You will have some tough choices to make. To be an informed voter, go to VOTE411 for non-partisan information about each candidate. There you can see background information and candidate responses to questions raised by the League of Women Voters. You can compare qualifications and views of those running for each position. Additionally, you will be able to review a sample ballot and create your own to bring to the polls.

How can you get involved? Become a poll worker in Delaware County. To qualify for pay you need to complete in-person training, pass the poll worker test, and serve successfully on Election Day in a precinct or as a County-approved standby ready to be assigned. Election officers can be elected to four-year terms or be appointed by the County Board of Elections. To be considered, certain requirements must be met and a short application must be completed. Students aged 17 or older can apply to be a part of the Student Poll Worker Program. Radnor Educational Foundation Funds Garden Redesign at Radnor Middle School On an unseasonably warm February day, students from the Radnor Middle School Garden Club were joined by faculty and staff of the Radnor Township School District and School Board Member and Radnor Educational Foundation liaison, Liz Duffy, for the official groundbreaking of a new school garden, strategically located with access to Radnor Middle School's Family and Consumer Science classrooms.

During the spring 2021 planting season, it became apparent to Radnor Township School District's Family and Consumer Sciences Department Chair, Maureen McConnell, and Assistant to the Superintendent, Patricia LaBellaKlusman, that students would both enjoy and benefit from new curriculum-based activities in an outdoor gathering space and that an overhaul of the existing garden was needed. The students of the Radnor Middle School Garden Club dug right in and became an integral part of designing the new garden space.

The idea was pitched to the Radnor Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide funding and support to enrich the educational experience, maintain academic excellence, and encourage innovative opportunities for the students in Radnor Township School District. The Foundation approved a $5,700 grant for the purchase of materials and supplies.

Radnor Middle School's PTO supplemented the grant with additional funds for the purchase of organic soil.

In the final plan, deteriorating older garden beds were replaced with eight new raised garden beds filled with fresh organic soil; grass was removed from the garden area; and an outdoor shed that houses tools and supplies was constructed.

The students of the Radnor Middle Garden Club will share the fruits of their labor by contributing much of their harvest to Family and Consumer Science classes with the object of enhancing the curriculum concerning food preparation, ecology and the connection between gardening and nutrition.

The new garden offers a more usable, lower maintenance, and accessible space for students to have fun learning about gardening, understand the process of growing healthy foods, and make a real connection to the farm to table concept, while enjoying the results of their planning and planting.

The Radnor Educational Foundation continues to offer grants via three grant application periods for innovative projects that supplement the Radnor Township School District's curriculum.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Entry-Level Filmmaking Tips Ever wanted to get started with filmmaking at a basic level? Main Line Network program host Carole Adrienne recently welcomed filmmaker Anthony Giunta to her Producer's Toolbox show. About a decade ago, Giunta decided to leave a senior Human Resources job at 92Y in New York to pursue his passion of filmmaking.

“It's really, really easy to get overwhelmed when you search the Internet and look at cameras that are 4K and 8K and equipment and editing - it can really get overwhelming,” Giunta says. “I'd like to talk about if you're going to just be starting out and coming in and a way to do that which is pretty inexpensive, but will give you some real-world practical experience.

So, if you decide that it is something you're interested in, you can build up from there.”

The following is an excerpt from the interview in which Giunta shared some tips for those just getting started.

Start Simple

“The first thing I would recommend is to make a short film. When you make a short film, you go through all the same steps albeit on a much smaller scale - as people go through when they make a feature film.

When I say make a short film, you don't have to go out and come out with the greatest idea that will get you noticed and win an Oscar or something like that. If I was starting today, I'd come up with the simplest idea possible. The simplest thing to do is to just get two characters who happen to want two opposite things and put them together in a situation where there's going to be conflict. I think you'll be able to grab a really good story out of that. Your first script can even be a page or two. You're shooting this for you and shooting this for a learning experience.

Again, start super simple and I would not go any more than two characters, because the minute you bring a third in, you're going to realize how that complicates things. One of the reasons I make the suggestion about creating some sort of 10

conflict is: that's going to inform the pace of your edit.”

Step One

“I think the first thing that you want is to be able to write the screenplay. Let's assume that if you don't have a computer you have access to one. There is a bunch of free screenwriting software online. No, the free stuff usually does not have all the bells and whistles and you can't do a lot of elaborate plotting with it, but you're not going to be doing a lot of that for this anyway. Right now if you were to search 'free screenwriting software' online, you'd find a bunch of really good options that could totally help you write and format the screenplay automatically in industry standard so that you can learn what a screenplay looks like.”

If I Don't Have A Camera Can I Shoot On My Phone?

“Absolutely. As long as it has a video camera function, you'd be absolutely fine.

What you want to think about is to get yourself out of the mindset that the phone has to shoot in 4K, because they can be very expensive. If you have access to one, great, go for it. If you don't and you're just starting out, use whatever you want,

because what you're trying to do early on is not to get something out into the world, but to experience all the steps. One mistake a lot of people make, however, is using the audio on your phone. They're never really as good as some of the free standing pieces of audio equipment that you can get. There are a lot of portable audio recorders out there even in the $100 range that record excellent audio. The audio on your phone will come in handy when you go to sync the external audio with the phone audio on an editing software. If I was just starting, I would just get a portable audio device that has a microphone, point it up off camera at the actors who are speaking and you will have your audio right there.”

“If you're shooting outdoors and there's some natural light - you don't want direct sunlight - you could be fine without [lighting equipment]. But, if you're shooting indoors then yes, you absolutely will. What I would recommend there is getting a small little rectangular light or even a light ring that can go around your smartphone. You can also pick up a tripod for like $30 or pick up what's called a gimbal to hold the phone steady (but those are more expensive - the entry point there is like $90-100).”

Fall Back on the Movie Watching Experiences

“If you feel like you're drawn to this world at all, chances are, you've probably seen a lot of movies in your life, even if you're not an old dude like me. It kind of gives a feeling inside that you know what needs to be done. And then when you read books or watch YouTube videos about the different types of shots and all of that, it all gets reinforced. No one ever said to me that the way shots are set up can often be symbolic of what's going on in the character's head and that type of thing, but I felt that in so many movies I've seen in my life.”

The fascinating history of the Willows Mansion, located in the Willows Park in Radnor Township, and the unflagging efforts of the Willows Park Preserve (WPP) to restore the long-shuttered building to its former grandeur, have already been described in these pages (see The Radnor News, Winter 2022). The bricks and mortar restoration of the Mansion is exciting news, but equally exciting is the “software upgrade” taking place at this much-revered landmark: creating community connections by offering a wide range of programs, lectures, workshops, performances and other events that can be enjoyed by community members of all ages.

Coming on April 24th of this year is the debut of what the WPP hopes will be an annual event at the Mansion: Wellness at the Willows, a free, day-long event featuring, among other things, classes on yoga, mindfulness, stretching and exercise; lectures and demonstrations on healthy eating; a presentation by the Rodale Institute on the soil/human connection; a talk by Penn Medicine about promoting a healthy body image; a tour of Skunk Hollow Community Garden with pointers on growing your own vegetables; a restorative hike along the Skunk Hollow trails; a “bar-less barre” class; and display tables offering information on a variety of health and wellness matters.

A series of virtual presentations on the stories “behind the walls” of several local historical homes, including Chanticleer, Launfal (now the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur), Woodcrest (now Cabrini University) and, of course, the Willows Mansion.

In addition to the Wellness at the Willows event, WPP plans to present additional virtual presentations and live classes, workshops and events on various topics in the coming months, as well as seasonal and holiday-related events. A listing and description of upcoming programs and events can be found on the WPP's website, www.willowspark preserve.org, and in the WPP's online monthly newsletter.

What about weddings, graduation parties and other private events like those held at the Willows Mansion for so many years before it was shuttered? Don't worry private events, from glamourous birthday parties to dignified celebrations of life are back again, now with increased outdoor tented space on the Mansion's beautiful terraces overlooking the scenic park and pond. The WPP is all about creating community connections through learning, exploring, socializing, celebrating and sharing experiences at a grand old house, Radnor's home.

Consider the programs and events that the WPP has offered to date: A family-friendly, outdoor Concerts in the Courtyard series featuring talented local musicians offering a variety of musical experiences, including pop tunes, classic rock, chamber music and soft jazz. One of the more popular performances in this series last year featured the Radnor High School Orchestra which delighted the audience with a program entitled “Starry, Starry Night.” The popular concert series will continue this year, from April through October, with the return of several crowd favorites and some new.

Speaking of the monthly newsletter, in addition to listing upcoming programs and events it contains an update on renovation activities at the Mansion and an interesting “Did you Know?” item on the history of the Mansion. The newsletter also features an engaging and informative article on nature at the Willows. Past articles have described the birds who make their homes in the park, seasonally or year-round; the fish and amphibians that live in the Willows Pond; the native trees and wildflowers that grow in the park; and other natural phenomena that can be observed around the Mansion.

Readers of past issues now know the state tree and state fish of Pennsylvania (Eastern hemlock and brook trout); how fish, frogs and turtles survive in an ice-covered pond (torpor and brumation); which tree at the Willows has “knees” (bald cypress); how to handle a snapping turtle (Don't!); and how the dandelion got its name (from the French “dent de lion” - tooth of the lion).

Eating to reduce your breast cancer risk.

You likely know that what you eat can impact your risk for health issues like heart disease or stroke, but did you know that diet can also impact your cancer risk?

“No cancer is completely cured or caused by your diet,” says Robin Ciocca, DO, breast cancer surgeon at Main Line Health. “That being said, there is absolutely a benefit to good nutrition and healthy eating in managing that cancer risk. Unlike our family history, gender, race or genetics, our diet is a cancer risk factor that's within our control to manage or change.”

And while there's no specific diet that has been tied to reducing breast cancer risk, studies have shown that making a few changes to what and how we eat have the potential to make a difference in lifetime breast cancer risk. Dr. Ciocca offers some advice for eating well to improve your breast - and overall - health.

Eat the right kind of fats.

While a high-fat diet hasn't been tied to breast cancer risk, there have been studies that examine how the type of fat you eat could impact your risk.

All fat is not created equal. Just like fiber or protein, fat is a nutrient that is important for our body and it has a role in good nutrition. Instead of packaged, processed or fried foods, get your fat intake from sources like nuts, olives, tuna, salmon, avocado, or olive oil. These foods contain monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat, which can actually help reduce plaque buildup in your arteries, improve cholesterol and reduce inflammation.

A staple of any healthy diet is lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains, and it's no surprise that eating a colorful array of produce can reduce your risk for several health issues and chronic diseases including breast cancer.

Limit alcoholic drinks to one per day.

Many studies have been conducted regarding the connection between alcohol and breast cancer risk, and all have found a similar result: The more alcoholic beverages you have per week, the higher your risk for breast and other cancers.

This doesn't mean you have to completely give up drinking, but you should limit your daily alcohol intake to one drink per day.

If you've gotten used to enjoying a fruity cocktail with dinner or relaxing with a glass of wine, ask yourself: Is it the beverage you're enjoying, or the ritual? Try mixing up a mocktail instead to satisfy your cocktail craving and begin substituting a 18

A healthy diet is important and one of the many modifiable risk factors for breast cancer. But the most important and effective way to manage your risk remains annual screenings.

“An annual mammogram is the best way for us to detect and treat cancer early. It's very important for women to make their mammogram a priority every year,” says Dr. Ciocca.

Women who are at a “normal” risk for breast cancer (no genetic mutations, no personal or family history, not of Ashkenazi Jewish descent) should begin getting annual mammograms by age 45. If you are at an increased risk for breast cancer either as a result of your personal or family history or genetics, talk to your primary care provider about when you should begin screenings.

Fill your plate with produce.

Whenever possible, pick seasonal fruits and vegetables. These are often less expensive and contain more nutrients and less preservatives.

The importance of mammograms for managing breast cancer risk.

Pay attention to vitamin D intake.

While research has yet to show a direct link between vitamin D deficiency and breast cancer risk, several studies have indicated that there's a connection between the two.

Get your vitamin D by spending time outside (sunshine is a great source of vitamin D!) and eating foods that include this nutrient, like juice, yogurt, milk and certain kinds of fish. If foods like these aren't part of your daily diet or you are vitamin D deficient, talk to your health care provider about whether or not supplements might be an option for you.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Overweight and obesity can increase your risk for several health issues, especially cancer. While your weight is bound to fluctuate over the course of your life, try to stick to a healthy weight. Your primary care provider can help you determine what that weight is, and how to stick to it.

Keeping your weight at the same number or within the same range for a long time can be difficult. And, it can get even harder after menopause.

Your Yard: Swap Noxious for Conscious Plants By Dan Lynch

Pennsylvania made headlines recently when The Commonwealth added several popular species to its list of noxious plants, and banned their propagation or sale throughout the state. Controlled Plant & Noxious Weed Lists (pa.gov) The list includes two ornamentals that have been favorites of homeowners, landscapers, and city governments for years: the Bradford (or Callery) Pear (Pyrus calleryana), and the Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii). Bradford Pears, with their showy white blooms, herald the coming of spring. However, they spread easily, their wood is soft and their branches often break, and their flowers emit a putrid odor. Japanese Barberries are no better.

Luckily, many options exist for hardy, native plants that can restore ecological health to our neighborhoods.

In with the Conscious

There are many native species that support and sustain a healthy ecological balance.

Once you plant an appropriate native species in its natural habitat, it will reward you with a lifetime of beauty, water filtration, and wildlife habitat.

Let's say you have a Japanese barberry hedgerow in your front yard that was installed years ago, and now you'd like to make an upgrade. Here are some fantastic native options to consider: Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) works well in sunny, mesic locations with good drainage, and provides early spring blooms for pollinators and birds.

High bush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) are real, edible blueberries that will feed the birds and your family! Put them in a moist area, and make sure they get plenty of sun. You might want to consider acidifying your soil, too.

Out with the Noxious

While consumers can no longer buy these specific invasive species, other noxious plants still lurk on store shelves. Plants like Japanese pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis) and Butterfly bushes (Buddlejadavidii) can proliferate throughout local ecosystems, but provide little to no sustenance for pollinators and wildlife. (Not one caterpillar eats the leaves of a butterfly bush, yet the bushes often crowd out native species. No caterpillars, no butterflies.)

As homeowners, we can learn about the potential threat of invasive species in our landscapes, and opt for natives instead.

Committing to more conscious practices can have an immediate, positive, compounding effect in our environmentwe just need to know what to plant.

Bush honeysuckle (Diervillasessilifolia) will give you a boom of pollinators with its fragrant flowers if you plant them in a moist, well-draining spot in the sun.

ART & CREATIVITY You are in this picture!

Here’s a small-world, you-can-go-homeagain - story you might enjoy: I recently ‘expanded my horizons’ by starting a new gallery in Chelsea with some other artists. (I’ve been told that my art belongs there, or perhaps even in Berlin, because much as I love the Pennsylvania countryside where I live and work, I paint more abstracts than landscapes.)

As my first NY solo show was installed, I wondered (with some trepidation) what visitors to Pictor Gallery would think of my work. But it turns out that people here and in New York react in much the same way…you want to know the inspiration, and understand the process, am I right?

I love the process of creating art…thinking about what I’ll do, choosing materials and becoming immersed in the making. But what I live for is meeting visitors, hearing your stories and your thoughts. And when I’m back at work in my studio, something you said will come back to me, influencing what I’ll do next!

and mixing different styles is usually more interesting than playing it safe with more of the same. Try grouping several pieces together, unified by similar frames or elements in the artworks themselves. Just for fun you might rotate your collection from season to season.

Art does have its magic and its mystery.

Maybe that’s because artists are often trying to respond to things that can’t easily be answered. We might feel an inescapable need to address climate change, racism or war – and some very powerful pieces come into being that way. Or, our approach might be more subtle, expressed with certain colors, techniques or symbolism. Regardless, I think that viewers who take the time to study a work of art become part of what we make.

And for those who collect, art becomes a part of you: A landscape might carry you away from a stressful or overly gray day. Something whimsical can capture your sense of humor. A face or figure reminds you of someone, and a purely abstract piece opens you to the pleasure of design in its own right, with surprises every time you look at it.

Does everything you collect have to be from a well known artist, or even an original? No to both. Mix and match with confidence. Who is going to care whether your secret favorite piece was inexpensive? Those who mind don’t matter, as the saying goes.

As an interior designer, I have been asked so many times, “Where do we start?” Truthfully there is no one rule that must be obeyed.

Wayne Art Center’s much anticipated Plein Air Festival is coming up in May. In July, ARTsisters will be exhibiting at Main Line Art Center.

The Delaware Valley Art League is showing at Greenbank Mills in Wilmington, April through July.

And the very popular Chester County Studio Tour will be May 14 and 15 this year.
