Neighbors Helping Neighbors Supports Families Through Hard Times

Financial insecurity can impact a student's learning, school attendance, physical and mental health, and overall academic

the negative effects that financial stress can have on students, in 2013, the Radnor Educational Foundation (REF) joined forces with the Radnor Township School District to create the Neighbors Helping Neighbors program. Expanding on REF's existing work providing grants for innovative school programs and projects that enhance curriculum and student life, this program provides financial support to Radnor families who experience unexpected financial hardship and allows students to focus on their studies and just being

the district's school social workers becomes aware of a family facing disruption, a financial setback, or other life challenge, the social worker meets with the family to identify needed resources to reinforce a positive learning environment for the school students living in that household. When additional financial support is required to provide basic life needs for the students, the social workers reach out to the Radnor Educational Foundation to request help, while allowing families to remain anonymous.

Thanks to the generosity of the Radnor community, REF is able to help pay onetime rent, mortgage, or car expenses, cover costs for transportation or utilities, and provide food, clothing, or other essential household items. This financial support can augment other support or serve as a stop gap when other assistance is not available.

In Radnor Township, we sometimes forget that there may be families that are living paycheck to paycheck or may be struggling due to circumstances outside of their control, but in the 2021-2022 school year, the Radnor Educational Foundation provided $8,400 in assistance to ten families. Through these funds, we have been able to help a family that was burdened with high medical bills and another family that experienced a reduction in work hours due to the pandemic. We also offered financial assistance for a grandparent supporting their grandchildren after a tragedy

Now in its ninth year of existence, Neighbors Helping Neighbors continues to expand the ways in which it can support Radnor families beyond the traditional rent, utility, and car payments. For example, REF helped to cover transportation costs for a parent trying to get to work when they unexpectedly lost their car.

With rising costs of inflation and the holiday season approaching, greater need

for this program is anticipated in the coming months, and the Foundation is prepared to support as many requests as the budget allows.

Light Pollution: Why it's a problem and what we can do about it.

Most of us are familiar with air, water, and land pollution, but did you know that light can also be a pollutant? Since Thomas Edison's patent of the tungsten lightbulb in 1906, artificial electric lighting has transformed our lives. But in the process, we have lost an important part of our human heritage: the night sky. Less than 100 years ago, most everyone could look up and see a spectacular starry night sky. Today 80% of Americans cannot see the Milky Way from their home. Over the last century, the increased or excessive and widespread use of artificial light at night has not only impaired our view of the universe but has adversely affected; the Earth's climate through human energy consumption.

Light pollution is a major contributor to the climate crisis. Large amounts of electricity are needed to generate light, and electricity is often produced by burning fossil fuels. Uncontrolled outdoor lighting wastes energy As much as 50% of outdoor lighting is wasted, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, and contributing to climate change.

VALLEY FORGE PARK ALLIANCE by Sarah Reisert, Advancement Committee Chair

We all know that a walk through nature is good for the soul, but the Valley Forge Park Alliance recently teamed up with Daemion Counseling Center and REI to provide people with an even more meaningful experience: walking for mindfulness.

What is mindfulness? It's a practice that brings our awareness to the present moment, helping us to engage more authentically and freely. Over a series of walks last fall and spring, therapists from Daemion Counseling Center taught mindfulness techniques and allowed time for sharing the effects of practice.

“The therapist was open and inspiring,” said one participant. “I loved her and all the people who walked with us.”

Participants practiced the power of being present. While they walked, they paid attention to the experience of the moment

by tuning into their senses. They looked at how the interaction of the material world affected their emotions. The observations from before and after one walk were astounding. Participants went from feeling grey and cloudy to yellow and sunny through the hour of observation, conversation, and exercise. They even noticed an increased awareness throughout the week in their daily activities.

“As a longtime community partner, REI Co-op is proud to support Valley Forge Park Alliance's mindfulness walks,” said Demyan Hryciw, REI Retail Operations Coordinator. “The EPA reports that Americans spend ninety percent of their lives indoors. These walks provide a great opportunity to get outside and tune in to oneself. Thank you, VFPA & Daemion Counseling!”

Conserving Water this Fall

What you can do to manage stormwater on you property this season:

Plant trees. Fall is a perfect time for planting trees and shrubs. Be sure to plant species native to PA.

Prune your trees, shrubs and perennials. Fall is the best time to prune trees and other plants in your yard. Pruning allows them to jump-start their growth and utilize more stormwater.

Clear leaves and debris from gutters. After cleaning you gutters, install a rain barrel at the end of your downspout to reduce the amount of stormwater running off of your property.

Keep storm drains near your property clear of trash and debris. Since they flow directly into local waterways, it is important that only water enters storm drains.

Can a screening CT for lung cancer save your life?

Lung cancer claims more lives each year than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Unfortunately, it's also a cancer that is rarely detected early.

"By the time people begin to experience the symptoms of lung cancer—a raspy or bloody cough, shortness of breath, recurrent pneumonia and bronchitis, chest pain—it's often when the disease has reached advanced stages. This makes it more difficult to treat,” explains Kareem Ibrahim, MD, thoracic surgeon at Main Line Health.

New low-dose CT lung cancer screening can reduce lung cancer deaths.

Lung cancer screening options were also limited in their ability to detect the disease early—until recently. In 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) approved a new lung cancer screening test: a low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan.

Unlike traditional chest X-rays, which are limited in their ability to detect a tumor in its earliest stage, this CT scan can detect lung tumors and abnormalities when they are as small as a grain of rice. It does this by taking dozens of X-ray images of the lungs from several different angles—far more than a traditional chest X-ray.

"A CT scan provides a much more comprehensive view of your lungs than traditional chest X-rays, which only detect tumors when they've grown to be about the size of a small coin,” says Dr. Ibrahim.

As a result, lung cancer can be detected earlier and treated sooner. Low-dose CT scans can lower the risk of death from lung cancer by 20 percent in high-risk patients.

Who is considered at high risk for lung cancer?

People who are smokers or who have a history of smoking are at a higher risk for lung cancer than people who have never

smoked. But, even within these groups, some people are at a higher risk for lung cancer than others. This includes people

who:Are

between 50 and 80 years old

Smoked at least one pack per day for 20 years

If you fall into any of these categories, you may be eligible for a low-dose CT scan. Other factors, like your history of lung cancer and disease, may also make you more eligible to receive this low-dose CT scan. If you are currently a smoker or you have a history of smoking, ask your doctor whether or not this scan might be right for you. There are no recommended limits to how many screenings can be done.

The screening is paid for by many insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid. Be sure to check with your own insurance company to determine whether you'll have any out-of-pocket expenses. In most cases, the fees—if any—will be small.

While a CT scan remains the most effective way to detect and diagnose lung cancer early, it's still important to recognize symptoms that may be early indicators of lung cancer. These symptoms include:

“Lung cancer kills 160,000 Americans every year and is often only discovered in the later stages, when it is difficult to treat. Early detection, before it spreads to other areas of the body, makes it is easier to treat and can save your life," says Dr. Ibrahim.

Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) Acting Commissioner Michael Humphreys, Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Acting Deputy Secretary for Highway Administration Mike Keiser, and Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Lieutenant Adam Reed urges Pennsylvanians to enable the setting on their cell phones that silence text and email notifications while driving, to help reduce crashes caused by distracted driving. Statistics show highway deaths, including pedestrian fatalities, and insurance rates have risen consistently since smart phones were introduced to the

market.“Distracted

driving is a serious safety hazard and Pennsylvanians should consider that distractions extend beyond just texting and driving,” said Humphreys. “Everything, from changing the radio station to eating, that causes a driver to take their attention and eyes away from the road or their hands off the wheel is a distraction.”

In Pennsylvania, the Texting-While-Driving Ban prohibits as a primary offense any driver using an Interactive Wireless Communication Device (IWCD) to send, read or write a text-based communication while the vehicle is in motion.The law:

Defines an IWCD as a wireless phone, personal digital assistant, smartphone, portable or mobile computer or similar devices that can be used for texting, instant messaging, emailing, or browsing the DefinesInternet.atext-based communication as a text message, instant message, email, or other written communication composed or received on an IWCD.

motorists to limit distractions when behind the wheel,” said PSP Lieutenant Adam Reed, Director of the Communications Office. “Nicer weather means more vehicles will be on the roadways, so please focus on getting to your destination safely.”

In a study conducted by the FoundationAAA for Traffic Safety, researchers found drivers can experience a “hangover effect” where the mind stays distracted for up to 27 seconds after using smartphones to send text messages, make phone calls, or update social media.“No driving distraction - whether texting or other operator activity - is ever worth the loss of life on the roadway,” said Vice President of AAA Insurance John Kubeika. “These senseless deaths can easily be prevented if drivers simply choose to focus on the core task of driving when behind the wheel. Driver safety and the safety of our roads have always been, and continue to be, top priorities for AAA and its members.”

In Pennsylvania, there were 10,826 crashes involving a distracted driver in 2020, resulting in 47 fatalities and 296 suspected serious injuries. PennDOT preliminary data shows fatalities in distracted driver crashes are up by approximately 25 percent, while suspected serious injuries in those crashes increased 17 percent. "Distracted driving crashes and fatalities are on the rise in Pennsylvania," said PennDOT Acting Deputy Secretary for Highway Administration Mike Keiser. "The simple choice to avoid distractions while behind the wheel will help keep you, your passengers, and other motorists safe.”

Commissioner Humphreys also noted that the average cost of an auto insurance policy in Pennsylvania has risen in recent years. In 2015, the combined average premium in Pennsylvania was $973.47. In 2019, that average rose to $1,102.76. The combined average premium is the sum of the average premiums for liability, comprehensive and collision on an auto insurance policy in the commonwealth and is published annually in the NAIC's Auto Insurance Database Report.

Humphreys, alongside many of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department staff, have activated the settings on their phones to reject texts and emails while driving. Summer Vacation? Not for the Willows Park Preserve!

~ The click of a ring binder as it snaps shut.

~ The roar of a bright yellow bus revving its engine.

~ The reappearance of school crossing guards.

It's September, and school children across the country, still tanned and freckled from afternoons at the pool or weekends “down the shore”, are squirming at their desks, groaning about that perennial first assignment of the school year: an essay entitled “What I Did During My Summer Vacation”

If the tireless staff and Board of the WPP were given this assignment, they might rightly respond, “Vacation?” Truth be told, there was no summer vacation for the WPP this year as the plucky nonprofit labored all summer long to fulfill its mission of restoring the historic Willows Mansion in Radnor Township and using the muchloved property as a site for creative community programming and memorable private events. Looking back over the summer of 2022, the WPP can say with great satisfaction that it accomplished quite a bit. Consider, for example, the following:

Physical Improvements

Several notable improvements were made to the interior and exterior of the Mansion over the summer. One of the most ambitious undertakings was the installation of new domestic and fire suppression waterlines. This project was undertaken in partnership with Radnor Township under the terms of its lease of the Mansion to WPP. The project involved the excavation of a trench and the laying of pipes that extended from the Willows Park entrance at Darby-Paoli Road, past the pond, and up the hill to the Mansion. This project took several weeks to complete. Once the water lines were installed and operational, a sprinkler system was installed on the first and second floors of the AnotherMansion.significant improvement to the Mansion this summer was the upgrading of the two bathrooms on the Mansion's first floor, one of which is now handicappedPuddlesaccessible.on the floor of the Mansion's solarium after a big storm? A thing of the past! The roof was properly sealed over the summer, continuing to let the sunshine in while keeping rain and snow melt out. The safety of visitors to the Mansion is critical. With this in mind, new safety lighting and exit signs were installed.

Speaking metaphorically, a little lipstick and rouge were applied to the Mansion in the form of new carpeting and drapes, courtesy of the WPP's caterer, Peachtree Catering and Events, and a fresh coat of paint on portions of the Mansion's exterior.

Another improvement of note — pun intended — was the addition of a piano donated by a generous friend of WPP. The piano adds a touch of elegance to the Mansion's lobby and offers musicallyinclined visitors to the Mansion an opportunity to demonstrate their command over ebony and ivory

One of the most exciting improvements to the Mansion this summer was the installation of a 60' x 40' tent and removable flooring on recently regraded grounds east of the terrace. This project was a joint effort by the WPP and Peachtree. Installation of this tent, in addition to a smaller tent previously installed over the Mansion's west terrace, will enable the WPP to host larger community programs, such as craft shows or health and wellness classes, and private events, such as weddings and family reunions, during the warmer months, rain or shine. Community Programs

With so much construction and restoration activity in progress over the summer, one might have expected the WPP to put community programming on pause for a few months. But the WPP has a history of exceeding expectations — sometimes even its own! — and succeeded in hosting a variety of creative programs this summer for children and adults.

In partnership with Delaware County's 4-H, WPP held its first ever Eco Camp for children ages 5-7. Campers learned about local wildlife, went on hikes, created nature art and learned how to protect our natural Asspaces.part of its Master Gardener series with Penn State WPP offered presentations on “How to Grow a Grill Garden” and “Herbs in Your Garden”.

As part of its local speakers' series, WPP offered presentations by three local historians and authors on The Willows and its neighbors, planned garden suburbs of the Main Line and the iconic Ardrossan ForEstate.music

lovers the WPP continued its popular Concerts in the Courtyard series with offerings from fan favorites, including Arts International Concerto Soloists and the Younger Brothers.

Private Events

The Willows Mansion served as the venue for a potpourri of private events this summer, including a school district retreat, several business meetings, a club reception, a child's birthday party, a memorial service and a wedding (with more weddings to come this fall). The Mansion, with its beautiful, wooded park setting overlooking a pond, is an inspiring location for all manner of events.

Reflecting on the summer of 2022, WPP has much to be proud of, but there is no time for the organization to rest on its laurels. The September 11 National Memorial Trail is a 1,300-mile multi-use trail connecting the Flight 93 memorial, the Pentagon and New York City's Ground Zero.

The route includes Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Its creation was spearheaded by the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance as a journey of remembrance of the fallen of 9/11 and a tribute to first responders. It can be traveled by foot, bike, motorcycle or car.

The first leg of the trail runs northwest from the Pentagon Memorial, following the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park to the Great Allegheny Passage at Cumberland, MD. I don't know about you, but my children have been so eager for the start of school! You can only sleep in, spend time with friends and family and enjoy life to the fullest for so long. It gets old. The kids keep saying things like, “School is awesome! I am so excited to open the gift of education each and every day,” “The birds sound so pretty at 5:00 in the morning” and “I love homework more than my Rainbow Flip Flops and Uggs.” Seeing the bus lights coming down the road on a foggy morning produces a giddy euphoria in the children akin to past reported sightings of Rudolph the Red Nosed

Talk to your kids. Even though they may not answer in complete sentences or even make eye contact, don't give up! The kids need to know you are interested in their school day.

Be optimistic about the start of school. We all know it's tough but stay positive in a realistic way. Remind them about the things they enjoy about school. Friends, nice teachers, tater tots, the smell of the hallways on humid days. (After 16 years I finally figured it out. The smell when the kids come in from recess period is room temperature Italian deli meats mixed with red on-ion, Axe Body Spray and unkempt recycling bins.)

Plan healthy dinners ahead of time. If you can make some

dinners over the weekend and freeze them, even better. I am happy to share some of my recipes upon request.

If your middle schooler is annoying you, consider buying them #3 pencils (you may need to mail order these from Canada) and folders with puppies on them.

Middle school is like space travel in many ways. If your child's heat tiles fall off upon reentry to school, please ask for help!Good Luck!

When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school. Slow down and be alert. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood. Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops.

Learn the flashing signal light system that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions:

Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.

Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.

FALL In Love With Workshops & Classes

What do you like best about Fall? Are you thinking beautiful colors, cooler weather, pumpkin-spiced-everything? What about — Back To School? Maybe it's your turn to get out and try something new!

Most artists I know are perpetual students. There is always something new to learn, or learn to do better. If art is on your radar, here are some ideas:

Our region has so many wonderful art centers that it is hard to pick a favorite. They each have their distinct ‘personalities', and certain features might appeal to you, or it may just be a matter of finding a class or workshop that fits your schedule. You also might find that the type of class you're looking for or a specific instructor will be at more than one location. Best to visit websites often, and drop by to observe a class in session, get a feel for the environment and check out the art in the galleries. Most of all, enjoy the process, because doing something for yourself should be fun.

This article is designed to help — sort of an Art School tasting menu. Because you are reading this after Fall classes have begun, I'm focusing mainly on workshops and short sessions, and only covering centers where I have been a member and taken classes (discussed in alphabetical order.) All of the art centers I am familiar with offer day and night classes in drawing, painting, ceramics and an ever-changing selection of specialized courses and open studio times. This Fall, many of CCAA's Classes are being offered in very reasonable 4 week sessions, which might leave some breathing room for you before the holidays set in. There's a zen pumpkin class for kids and teens and

a special pottery class for them as well. I've been wanting to try alcohol inks — there's a workshop for that. For students ages 10 to adult with sensory differences, CCAA is offering Expressing the Senses, a very special new course customized to each person's unique sensory profile. They also offer Art For Everyone tuition-free classes for people who have suffered pandemic-related economic hardship. And MLAC has an Accessible Art education program which pairs teaching artists with visually and hearing impaired individuals, people with alzheimers and other partner communities. You might like Monotype Printing, or maybe try a class in Digital Photography. After all that, if you are ready to get up and move, CAC has yoga and West Coast Swing dance classes for every fitness level. It's easy to see that Community is integral to CAC, with Tri-State Jazz concerts, Friday night music events, festivals, poetry readings and Art-To-Go outreach programs offered throughout the year in tandem with CAC's many community partners. Discovering your own resources as a painter. The lecture that precedes the seminar is available for a small fee. There are 17 other workshops this Fall at Wayne, and many of them are over-the-top excellent. I can personally recommend Kassem Amoudi's Color Matters, which will enhance your knowledge and use of color Kassem has an uncanny ability to navigate problem areas in his students' work and he is generous with his time and ideas in his one-on-one critiques. Photography on Location? Water Soluble Oils? How about Clay Camp? Or building your own easel! You might want to try an open studio and go at your own pace. It's worth checking to see if you can still get into the many excellent full-semester courses too. Art instruction for underserved and special needs individuals is an ongoing part of WAC's extensive outreach. The Adult Culinary Arts events are a mouth-watering new twist for your date night.
