Radnor Educational Foundation So school is going to be virtual.

But what if not all students have access to the internet?

has been established under Neighbors Helping Neighbors specifically to assist the District with addressing the need for all students to be internet-connected.

Our Radnor Township School District administrators faced this question as they planned for the 2020-21 school year. They understood that a number of RTSD families would not have the internet connections needed to fully engage in distance learning.

Radnor Connects by REF will fund low cost, whole-home wireless internet coverage for families experiencing significant financial difficulties.

So they turned to REF. The District approached REF over the summer with a proposal to provide equitable access to high speed, in-home internet to RTSD families who qualify as economically disadvantaged and/or are experiencing financial hardship. I have been an orthodontist for over 25 years, and one of the reasons I choose this medical specialty was because I would not have to give my patients a shot. Being fearful of needles is normal, especially in children.

But given the current COVID-19 pandemic, and the race to develop a vaccine to ensure our health and safety, it is important to talk to our children early and often about the need for vaccines-- of all kinds--and prepare them for the COVID immunization. It is critical to trust this vaccine when it is available and follow the science: For generations, vaccines have prevented countless childhood diseases, and even deaths, and have protected the health of both individuals and the public.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a program jointly administered by RTSD social workers and REF's NHN committee, is a systematic approach to addressing temporary financial hardship among RTSD families. If you would like to support our community's tradition of helping families experiencing temporary COVID-19 vaccine whenit is available. This is especially important for our children and teens, who may not be symptomatic but could be carriers.

To facilitate this discussion, I developed the acronym T.A.L.K. to help my patients and their parents talk about and reduce any fears about getting a COVID vaccine.

T Trust the vaccine. Talk to your children

about how the medicine will protect them.

Explain that they will get a poke under the skin and it will prepare their body to fight the virus. Without the vaccine, everyone can get very sick.

Assure them the medicine is safe. Tell them that parents and kids have been getting vaccines since they were babiesto stay healthy and protected against diseases.

L Learn ways to calm your children and

yourself while getting a vaccine. Hold your kids close if they're younger and have them to look away. Try singing, humming and

blowing bubbles or kisses. Breath, count or laugh to distract them.

K

Kind words and kisses. Praise your children for being brave. Promise a fun BandAid, ice cream or other treat immediately after. Play something special with them once you get home.

Remember, while the COVID pandemic has had a disastrous impact on our lives, we will have a safe, effective vaccine in the foreseeable future that will protect our families and enable us to resume our lives.

Dr. Robert Murphy, an infectious diseases specialist at Northwestern University and Executive Director of the Institute for Global Health, told CNN that since coronavirus is an RNA virus, similar to SARS and MERS, vaccine researchers are not starting from square one.

Protocols for safety and efficacy, which have been used to develop many other vaccines successfully, are being implemented with the highest standards.

The good news is that some COVID-19 vaccine candidates may have a product thoroughly developed and tested by the end of the year. It is important to note that developing a vaccine and creating enough supply around the clock may increase the financial risk, but not the product risk.

Each Fall season, Radnor Township Public Works Department collects leaves from residential properties located on all Township, State, and Private roads. Leaves are collected two times in each district. The second collection will begin after the first collection has been complete in all three districts.

place their leaves in the gutter line of their street. Leaves should be piled in a manner that does not impede the cart way. If SOME leaves must remain behind the curb (so that the cart way is not impacted), Township crews WILL remove leaves from that location. (Go to Radnor.com to view list.)

Residents who live on streets listed in regular type on the Districts Streets List are required to place the leaves on their property and OFF the street (behind the curb). The Township crews will remove the leaves from that location.

All tree branches and tree limbs must be removed from leaf piles.

Because of State regulations, bagged leaves will not be collected by Radnor Township Solid Waste Collection Division during this collection.

All leaves to be collected must be placed in accordance with the guidelines described and will be picked up in bulk. There will be no exceptions!

Special note: Please do not park any motor vehicle on top of leaf piles. A hot engine could cause the leaves to catch fire.

Pets & Safety Tips Cat Behavior Problems: Advice from a Behavior Expert

Cats display a wide range of emotions which sometimes can be hard for humans to fully understand. This is particularly true when cats display aggressive or anxious behavior which when left unaddressed can cause problems in the home. It's important to be proactive about cat behavioral issues and to understand some basic elements about cat psychology before getting one as your pet.

Today we're asking Hagar Hauser, DVM Behavior Service at Metropolitan Veterinary Associates some important questions about cat behavior to understand our pets better.

eliminate a normal amount, known as inappropriate toileting. Other cats spray a small amount of urine, typically on vertical surfaces, known as urine marking or spraying. Unfortunately, inappropriate elimination is a common reason for cats to be relinquished to shelters. There are ways to manage inappropriate elimination through changing the environment, modifying behavior, and in some cases using pheromones and/or medications. The second most common behavior problem that cats present for is aggression towards another cat in the home or towards their owner. The aggression may be redirected from another stressor in their life, such as an outdoor cat.

What's the best way to handle an aggressive cat?

The most common cause of aggression in cats is fear or anxiety. When interacting with a cat, make sure to read their body language.

If they are showing signs of stress, go slow and at the cat's pace. Let them initiate the interaction on their own, if safe to do so, and offer them high value treats to make a positive association. If your cat is showing aggression towards you or anyone in your home, avoid handling them and consult with your veterinarian immediately.

What are some fundamentals of pet psychology to know before getting a cat?

Hagar Hauser: Before getting a cat, it's important to know about its natural behaviors so you can provide opportunities for your cat to perform them in your home and help meet their needs. Natural cat predatory behavior is commonly seen in our pet cats. Their play repertoire includes stalking, pouncing, and grabbing a toy just like they would hunt in the wild. Cats also naturally eat multiple small meals throughout the day and may catch up to 20 mice per day! To help promote these natural behaviors, we can provide individual play time, offer them food puzzles, and hide treats for them throughout the home. It's also important to know that cats utilize space in order to maintain harmony. If they are not comfortable with a person or another pet in the home, they should have the ability to maintain distance from them, especially on elevated surfaces. Finally, cats are thought to be low maintenance pets, however, they do require mental and physical enrichment in the home. Be prepared to offer them daily play time, toys, and one-on-one interaction.

What happens when two cats don't like each other in the same household?

What are some important cat body language cues to know?

While cats are predators, they are also a prey species so they hide when they are not feeling well or are fearful. Signs of a stressed cat include tail swishing, ears flat or back, dilated pupils, hackles (hair on back) raised, and vocalizations (hissing, growling). When in doubt, always wait for a cat to approach you before interacting with them. Cats rub their face against peoples' legs, also known as bunting, to release a pheromone from their cheek gland. They may be soliciting petting if they nudge your hand or lean against you. A cat that is hiding should be left alone as they are using distance in order to feel secure.

It is not uncommon for cats to present to a veterinary behaviorist for aggression towards their housemates. As discussed earlier, cats use space to maintain harmony and if there are too many cats in a small space, they are not able to do so. This may present as one cat blocking another cat's access to resources (litter box, food, owner) by physically standing in the way or using subtle body language to deter them, rough play, or overt aggression that includes hissing, swatting, scratching, and biting. Every cat should have a core area where they have access to their own food, water, toys, bedding, and litter box. If the cats are actively aggressive towards each other, they must be separated by physical barriers and the owner should consult with their

The most common behavior problem that cats present to the veterinarian for is inappropriate elimination (urinating or defecating outside of the litter box). Some cats squat outside of the litter box and 10

veterinarian. While some cats may be reintroduced with gradual training (using desensitization and counterconditioning), others may never safely be reintroduced.

How does cat behavior change over time?

Kittens are often energetic and rambunctious pets. As they get older, they may be described as “low energy� while others are active throughout their adult life. If a cat has any anxiety or fears, they may intensify as they go through social maturity at three to four years of age.

Therefore, if you notice your cat has any behavior concerns at a younger age, it's important to address them as soon as possible. Other triggers that may result in behavior changes in your cat include environmental changes or illness. For example, if you move homes, bring home a new baby, add another pet, or another significant change occurs in your cat's environment, then their baseline anxiety level can increase. Similarly, if your cat has gastrointestinal upset, pain, neurologic changes, endocrine disease, or other medical illnesses, then they may become more irritable. If you notice a change in your cat's behavior, please consult with your veterinarian.

When is it necessary to see a specialist about cat behavior?

When a cat is exhibiting aggression, it is important to discuss safety guidelines with your veterinarian who may recommend referral to a specialist. Other reasons to see a specialist may include inappropriate elimination, inappropriate play behavior, separation anxiety, pica, feline hyperesthesia syndrome, or other behavior concerns. An appointment with a behavior specialist will include filling out a questionnaire that collects information about your cat's behaviors, an appointment with an in-depth discussion regarding the behavior, and a thorough treatment plan. As a general rule, it is strongly recommended to address behavior problems sooner rather than later as cats typically do not grow out of them.

Rather the problems may even worsen.

Maybe you chose your home partly because of the trees, but now you may be replacing trees that were lost due to storm damage or construction. Help your trees thrive and maximize their ecological benefits by following these tips.

Planting trees

The right tree for the right site. Take time to learn about what trees work best in your soil.

Look up information about any tree you consider planting: Is it suited to your type of soil? Will it thrive with this area's usual amounts of rainfall? What about the tree's mature size? Don't plant a tree that will grow to 90 feet near your house or to power lines!

Early care ensures good survival. Tree Tenders cites two major reasons for failure of young trees to get established: Planting too deeply, and watering too little. For detailed video guidelines, go to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Tree Tenders Youtube videos, 'Planting a Container Tree' and 'Planting a Bareroot Tree'.

Planting too deeply. A tree trunk ends in a root flare. The root flare should be above the soil line. Soil (or bark mulch) piled against the trunk of the tree encourages surface roots instead of the deep roots the tree needs. Even worse, microorganisms, insects, and burrowing rodents will attack the cambium, or nutrient-carrying layer, of the tree trunk if soil is piled against it. Root structure is made to be in contact with soil; trunk structure is not.

Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) recommends watering with at least 10 gallons per week (up to 15 in a city situation where much of the soil is covered with pavement), preferably delivered slowly to the base of the tree. If it rains, you might be able to supply less extra water. Check the soil to be sure. And, if there's a warm spell in the winter, be sure to water your new tree.

Ongoing care

Care throughout the life of the tree is important for maintaining the tree's health.

Follow these pointers for ongoing care of a tree: Mulch correctly, skip the lawn under the tree, and protect your tree from deer (and weed whackers).

Yes to mulch, no to mowing! It's important to keep the soil below the tree moist and uncompacted. Mulch in the form of shredded leaves or roots (no dye, please!) helps control weeds, keep the soil moist, and maintain the structure of the soil. As the mulch breaks down, it feeds the soil as well.

Say NO to Mulch Volcanoes! Go for a walk in the woods. Notice how trees grow in the wild. They never have 'volcanoes' of soil or mulch mounded around the trunks! Keep the mulch AWAY from the trunk of the tree! See the warning against 'planting too deeply' above. Mounding mulch around the trunk is as bad as planting too deeply.

Watering too little in the first two years.

Yes, we live in a climate with adequate annual precipitation, but it may not fall when your tree needs it! A transplanted tree has probably suffered some damage to the tiny roots that bring in moisture and nutrients.

You need to make sure the soil stays moist during the first two years, while the tree rebuilds a healthy root system. The 18

Protect trees from deer. In our area, young trees must be caged to protect them from deer. Saplings will be browsed if they are not caged or sprayed with deer repellant. Older trees, up to about five inches in diameter, attract bucks looking for a good place to rub the velvet off their antlers. Buck rub can result in so much bark damage that it kills the tree.

Give your new trees a good start and continue providing the basic care needed to ensure that they contribute to the beauty of your property and to your property's environmental value.

tractor mowers, compacts the soil. Mowers, weed whippers, and other lawn-care equipment run into trees, damaging the bark and letting in disease and insects.

Don't put your leaves out on the curb! Use them as mulch under your trees, shrubs, and on your perennial beds. Here's how: When leaves fall, rake them onto the lawn and run over them with a mower (NOT a tractor mower). Your mower may even have a mulch plug to help grind up the leaves. Then, rake the leaves to where they can serve as mulch. You can rake the leaves onto a tarp and drag them to where they are needed to save labor.

PHS recommends the 3-3-3 rule for proper mulching: 3 inches away from the trunk, no more than 3 inches deep, and extend the mulch to about 3 feet out from the tree.

(For mature trees, you can even mulch out to the 'drip' line - the extent of the branches, which is the likely extent of the roots as well.)

You can also add the shredded leaves to your compost pile and use the composted leaves in the spring. However, keep some leaves in their shredded state on your property. Many butterfly and moth larva over-winter in leaf mulch. If you remove it or compost all of it, you may reduce the number of beneficial insects on your property.

What about having lawn under the tree? As PHS says, 'Say No to Grass!' Turfgrass is not natural in our area, and it requires heavy input of chemicals to be kept green. Those chemicals damage the soil in ways that make it harder for trees (and other plants) to grow.

Gardening & Landscaping Enhancing Your Fall Garden

Autumn is a great season for admiring and bolstering the life in your garden. The shortening daylight hours signal leaves to begin their transition from lush, summer green to cooler hues of reds, oranges, and yellows. Dropping temperatures encourage the flora and fauna to slow down in preparation of winter dormancy and hibernation. A gardener's work, however, is never complete. This is an optimal time for cherishing the newly painted landscape and continuing garden improvement projects.

Planting

Autumn is also a great time to expand your gardens and extend the bloom time. Cool air temperatures, moderate moisture levels, and adequate heat

Outside of the aster family, species such as Southern blue monkshood (Aconitum uncinatum), bottle gentian (Gentiana andrewsii), Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), and Great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) add a variety of flower types, textures, and colors that will brighten your garden as the temperatures begin to drop. After the plants are in the ground, remember to thoroughly water and mulch them to provide ample opportunity for successful growth.

As September rolls in, we notice the subtleties in the changing color palette of the trees. Our home gardens also start to cycle through and slow down, giving us an opportunity to admire the season's hard work. The timing of this leaf color change is determined by the reduced hours of sunlight. The brilliance of the color change is then influenced by climatic factors, such as moisture and temperature.

Wetter conditions and cooler nighttime temperatures allow for a longer period of color change, while sunnier days make for a brighter color.

In Southeastern Pennsylvania, peak fall color is typically enjoyed in mid to late October.

Certain deciduous trees are known to have a brighter display of fall color, including red maple (Acer rubrum), sugar maple (Acer saccharum), and blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica). Additionally, there are a few deciduous conifers that join in the show and drop their needles in the fall. This includes bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) and American larch (Larix laricina), both of which turn a beautiful, golden yellow. Some plants have a rather unique lifecycle in which they are blooming as the leaves are changing color. This anomaly can be seen in the Franklin tree (Franklinia alatamaha) and some deciduous azaleas including Rhododendron x 'Weston's Innocence'.

Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens is home to an accredited collection of rhododendron and azaleas.

These plants are most often thought of as providing striking colors when blooming in the spring, but many also have notable features in the fall. Some species, such as the Encore azaleas, even have a second bloom time as many other plants are beginning to drop their leaves.

Once the leaves have fallen, they can still be of use.

Chopping them up with a lawn mower and raking them into garden beds provides habitat for beneficial insects and organic matter for the soil. As they are broken down by bugs, the leaves return nitrogen and phosphorous to the soil, acting as a slow release fertilizer that helps improve soil health. Walking

retention in the soil provide an ideal window for planting herbaceous and woody plants. These conditions reduce the potential for drought stress and insect predation on the plants and are far more comfortable to garden in than the midsummer's heat.

When deciding which species to add to your home landscape, it is important to be honest about the light, moisture, and space that you can provide.

These factors will influence the continual maintenance required as your garden grows. At Jenkins, we focus on supporting plants native to the eastern United States. These species have an evolutionary history that lends them to being adapted to their surrounding conditions, so they require minimal maintenance once established.

Native plants also support the local wildlife by providing food and shelter for birds and insects.

If your goal is to add more late summer and early fall blooming plants to your garden, you may want to consider planting those in the aster family. While they vary in size and color, most plants in this family have a composite flower head that is made up of dozens of smaller flowers. This creates a dense display of color that will last through September and sometimes even October. Species such as blue wood aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium), smooth aster (Symphyotrichum laeve), and aromatic aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) are examples of individuals that will grow in a variety of conditions and bloom through early fall.

Planting goldenrods is another way to extend the seasonality of a garden by adding tall bursts of orange and yellow. They are also in the aster family, and species such as autumn goldenrod (Solidago sphacelata 'Golden Fleece'), zigzag goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis), and flat-top goldenrod (Euthamia graminifolia) grow in a contained fashion and provide nutritional nectar sources for bees through September.

Once pollinated, plants that bloomed in the spring and early summer will transition to the next phase in their lifecycle and begin to set seed. Leaving these herbaceous stalks standing in your garden can provide additional visual interest and food sources for native birds. Some species with particularly showy seed structures include the native strawberry bush (Euonymus americanus), Eastern wahoo (Euonymus atropurpureus), and red buckeye (Aesculus pavia).

Furthermore, collecting seed from your garden and sowing it through the winter is a cost-effective way to grow your plant collections and prepare for (photo by Harold Sweetman) Strawberry bush planting in the spring. This Euonymus americanus seed can be done in a variety of ways, the simplest being to use an old milk jug as a small make-shift greenhouse.

Even though the days are growing shorter and the temperatures are cooling, there are many different aspects of your gardens to enjoy throughout the year. Each season is an opportunity to enjoy a variety of plants while preparing your gardens for the next phase of their lifecycle. We encourage you to explore the life in your own garden and tune into the everchanging natural world.

Sports & Recreation Don't give up on your swing just because summer's over. Golf is still the perfect socially-distanced game in the fall, and the Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia (GTGP)* welcomes new players to two casual games during their membership drive this October and November.

Why do people enjoy playing with Golf Tour Philly? Tony McCarthy, a strong amateur golfer who also manages the website www.golftourphilly.org offered three reasons: 1) Camaraderie It's a great group, and everyone loves the game. There's also a sense of friendly competition which helps us all focus and improve. And after the round is over, many of us enjoy gathering and sharing stories at “the 19th hole” (the clubhouse) over a select beverage or two.

2) Health and Safety The pandemic has us all searching for non-contact outdoor exercise alternatives, and golf allows you to pick your level of effort. Most people preferred to ride around in carts, but we've had a lot more walkers in 2020 because of Covid-19!

Joining a league can be a bit intimidating for decent players who might not know their handicap, but GTGP has you covered! Every member gets their scores posted for them on the US Golf Association (USGA) Tournament Management system, and after your third game, it automatically generates your handicap. We not only track your scores online for you, we kicked off a “Park and Play” registration and payment system in January which was very helpful when the pandemic hit. Members can now skip the pro shop and head straight to the practice area and the first tee. Park your car and go play!

It's all in good fun, and Golf Tour Philly also believes in giving back, so funds are always set aside for an admirable charity: SuperKids of Montgomery County, a non-profit which supports abused, neglected, and abandoned children.
