Spotted Lanternfly The Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive insect that has the potential to greatly impact agricultural crops such as grapes, hops, and hardwoods and reduce the quality of life in heavily infested areas.

Egg masses are laid on trees, decks, houses, and other hard surfaces and are protected by a mudlike covering. SLF adults are the most detectable stage since they are large, brightly colored, and mobile. Professional pest managers use an integrated approach called integrated pest management (IPM) to eliminate as many SLF as possible while minimizing potential risks to the environment. One IPM method for destroying SLF is using “trap” trees. Thousands of SLF can be killed by one trap tree. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) is establishing many trap trees in the infested area to kill as many SLF as possible while minimizing pesticide use. Property owners can also establish trap trees on their land or hire a professional service to help them.

How do trap trees work?

Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a preferred host for SLF. In the fall, many SLF adults relocate to feed on tree-of-heaven. To set up trap trees, most tree-of-heaven trees are killed. The remaining treeof-heaven trees are treated with an insecticide that is moved throughout the entire tree. When the SLF adults feed on the treated trap trees, they ingest the systemic insecticide and die. As additional SLF relocate to feed on the trap trees, they also die.

Steps to establish a trap tree to kill SLF:

1) Identify all tree-of-heaven trees on the site.

Spotted lanternflies seem to prefer certain tree-ofheaven trees over others. Locate specific trees that are most attractive to the spotted lanternfly based on the number of insects feeding on them. For information on how to identify tree-of-heaven, see

2) Treat approximately 85 percent of the tree-ofheaven trees with a properly labeled herbicide. Kill all female tree-of-heaven trees if possible; they produce seed and contribute to the spread of this invasive tree. Leave only a few male tree-of-heaven trees that appear to be more attractive to the insect to serve as trap trees.

Herbicides recommended to kill tree-of-heaven trees contain the active ingredient triclopyr, which comes in two formulations: water based (amine) and oil based (ester). Both formulations are effective for controlling tree-of-heaven. Other herbicides are effective; but to prevent herbicide injury to trap trees through common root systems, limit herbicide selection to triclopyr. Herbicide application methods effective for controlling tree-of-heaven include foliar sprays, basal bark, and spaced-cut hack-and-squirt applications. Treating cut stumps is ineffective at controlling the tree-of-heaven; it will not control the roots. Herbicide applications made to control tree-ofheaven are most effective when applied from July 1 to September 30, when the plant is exporting sugars to the roots. Applications made outside this window

are not effective at controlling the roots and may only injure aboveground growth.

Cutting tree-of-heaven is often necessary to remove potentially hazardous trees, but it is not useful as a stand-alone control measure. They will resprout vigorously from stumps and roots. In situations where tree-of-heaven stems need to be removed, it is best to treat them with herbicide first and then cut. Allow 30 days for the herbicide to take effect before cutting. 3) Treat the remaining tree-of-heaven trap trees with an insecticide that will move throughout the tree.

For best results, apply the insecticide according to the label in June through August. When spotted lanternflies feed on treated trees, they will die.

Systemic insecticides known to be effective and labeled to treat ornamental trees, including tree-ofheaven, contain the active ingredients dinotefuran or imidacloprid. PDA is using dinotefuran to establish trap trees. Treating only trap trees reduces the total amount of insecticide used in comparison to largescale contact insecticide applications.

Marple Tree Commission Marple Tree Commission Hosts th the Township's 13 Arbor Day Celebration Weather reports for Friday afternoon , April 26th were not encouraging, but the rain held off until another lovely tree was planted in Marple Township to celebrate and honor trees. The Arbor Day event took place at the newly expanded parking lot at the Marple Township Municipal Building on Lawrence Road. Planned and presented by the Marple Tree Committee (MTC) Vice Chair Diana Breen, the event also celebrated Marple's renewed certification as a TreeCity, USA. The event featured a tree planting demonstration by Rick Ray, MTC horticulturist, and Janis Egan chairperson of MTC's Marple ReLeaf program. They demonstrated the correct procedure for planting, mulching and staking a bare root tree before an audience of residents and local officials which included Township Manager Tony Hamaday, Commissioner Rob Fortobono and State Representative Jennifer O'Mara. The newly planted tree is a weeping Higan cherry (Prunus subhirtella' Pendula Plena Rosea') which is located at the far end of the parking lot. It was donated by Steve Mostardi at Mostardi Nursery in Newtown Square. A Tree City, USA flag is mounted on the fence behind the young tree.

After a welcome by Jim Elliott, chair of the Marple Tree Commission, Liz Ball read a short inspirational essay by Herman Hesse about trees. Then the Honorable Charles B. Burr II, retired judge in the Civil Division of the Court of Common Pleas of Delaware County, read the Arbor Day Proclamation.

Diana Breen then introduced Kayla Kehres, Service Forester Representative of the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Forestry,who presented the Arbor Day award to Marple Township.

This included a thirteenth year medallion to add to the Tree City plaque in the Township Building Lobby and Tree City USA stickers for three signs along roadsides in town.

Within minutes of the end of the Arbor Day program, the stormy weather arrived. The downpour was just in time to water the newly planted tree. Many thanks to the Marple Public Works Department for their help in making this event so successful and to volunteers Greg Traceski and Lisa Matoszivk who will be watering the weeping cherry over the next couple years.

As he and Janis began to place the new weeping cherry Arbor Day tree in its hole, Rick Ray mentioned that it was one of 36 new trees that have been planted over the past year in in Marple Township parks by the Tree Commission. This Higan cherry is native to Japan and it is hardy to zone 5. In a residential landscape it may grow 30 to 40 feet tall and about 30 feet wide. As its name suggests, its supple branches are arched and drooping. In April they bear pink, double flowered blossoms and dark, glossy green leaves that turn yellow before dropping in autumn.

A Look Back: A Snapshot of Marple’s Past This discovery changed everything.

Native American Remains Along Langford Run

Along Langford Run, a tributary of Darby Creek, only a short distance south of the West Chester Pike, is a small region of very rough terrain.

In places there are perpendicular--or even overhanging--cliffs, scalable with great difficulty, and steep hills, hard to climb. Of course, it is un-tillable land, and even too irregular for habitation. The highest cliffs, known as Kemble's Rocks, are close to Langford Run, facing south-west and in one place there is an overhang at the bottom with a considerable flat area, sunny and protected and with water close at hand.

Because of its significance it is listed as one of Marple Township's historic resources and should be kept permanently as open space.

There are other smaller shelters in the cliff face above, but none with any depth of soil.

Frank Sterling contacted the University of Pennsylvania and informed them of their find and the University sent Archeologist Dr. Mary Butler to assist and advise them on the proper procedures on handling their discovery.

The burial was at a very slight depth and doubled up, lying on its right side, the head to the southeast. The bones were studied by Dr. J. Lawrence Angel of Jefferson Medical College who determined that the deceased was a woman of about thirty-seven years of age, with the general characteristics of the Lenape Indians, but naturally with some individual peculiarities. She was about 5'3" tall, had lost twenty-five of her teeth before death (unusual for an Indian), and suffered from arthritis of the upper vertebrae, perhaps as a result of much burden-bearing.

Nothing was buried with her, but the body had been covered with a thin layer of white clay. probably a chief's wife. Apparently, the shelter was not used after the burial was made, which is another Indian custom.

Dr. Frank Johnston, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, University Museum, Philadelphia, who has examined the skeleton in detail, stated, that death may have occurred 500 to 1,000 years ago. Mr. Sterling had reconstructed several large clay pots from shards found under these rock shelters and gave them to Marple Library along with the skeletal remains for display where they remained for a considerable amount of time.

Crossing the hill, to the north, or circling the cliffs and following up the Run, one, comes to a little valley with more gently sloping sides, and on the north side of the stream is a great rock or outcrop with tilted strata so that it afforded a shelter beneath it on the southwest side. This area is referred to as "Dl.� Langford Road now runs between the brook and the base of the cliffs, but formerly the land is said to have been swampy.

It was in this area that in 1943 that J. Frank Sterling, of Broomall, an amateur archeologist, who spent his week-ends searching for arrowheads, and digging at promising place's discovered the complete skeleton of what he thought to be an Indian woman in rock shelter closer to Langford Road.

Probably the most interesting feature of this burial was the fact that traces of a hole left by a large post, about a foot in diameter, were found about twenty inches beyond the head. The best reports available on the life of the Lenape Indians were written by Moravian Missionaries Loskiel and Heckwelder who lived with them after they had been moved to Ohio toward the end of the eighteenth century. Loskiel wrote that "At the head of the corpse, which always lies toward the east, a tall post is erected pointing out who is buried there." While this was apparently done mainly in the case of chiefs or warriors of note, Heckewelder reports observing the same ritual in the case of the wife of a famous chief. We may therefore reasonably conclude that our burial was that of a woman of importance,

With the passage of the re-patriation act the remains were returned to the Lenape tribe for proper burial. A tribal group from the Allentown area agreed to take the remains to their burial ground for proper burial. When they returned to Allentown the tribe's opinion was that these were not, in fact, the remains of an Indian woman and they, therefore, had them buried in a Baptist Cemetery near Allentown. They based their opinion of the fact that she was missing some teeth, unusual for a Native American at that time, the fact there were no grave goods associated with the remains and the evidence of a light accumulation of lime on the skeleton.

The Native American Heritage Museum in Allentown, where most of the artifacts reside, has been actively seeking opportunities to have the remains disinterred in order to be studied to determine its true heredity.

The question remains, was this woman a member of the Lenape Tribe? Was she a notable person of her tribe? Were these rock outcroppings along Langford Run a more permanent settlement then just a seasonal hunting ground?

Newtown Public Library Artist Series Artist Jennifer Nettingham th June 24 to August 26th!

Considering that she had no formal training as a painter, that seemed like a rather extraordinary message. But, being resourceful, she went online and Googled “painting techniques for people who don't know how to paint.”

And Jenn found pour painting / liquid art.

What is it? It's a process of combining acrylic paints with a pouring medium (like Floetrol) which essentially keeps the colors intact. It allows the individual tints to keep their integrity. The paints layer together without blending which makes it possible to achieve an infinite variety of intricate patterns.

First days at school, at a new job, or in a new home can be both exciting and a bit nervewracking. But inaugural events are always full of potential. Jennifer Nettingham's first major solo art exhibit at Newtown Square Public Library rings all those bells.

Jennifer's beautiful, intuitive, fluid art exhibit encapsulates a spirit of adventure and creativity which began with a question. Jenn loves to meditate, and as she was emerging from a deep state of contemplation one day, she decided to ask “What is it that you want me to do?” Immediately, she heard the word “Paint!”

Individual colors are drizzled on a canvas, and then manipulated in a variety of ways. You can use heat (Jennifer uses a hair dryer to gently coax and lift the layers of color) or swipe the canvas with tools, or simply tilt the painting to see what emerges.

There are multiple other techniques like the “Dirty Pour,” where the artist adds good dollops of multiple colors into a single cup. The cup is then inverted onto a canvas, and an explosion of color ensues. “Cells” often emerge which are basically bubbles of color that can be reminiscent of stellar formations or dreamy underwater vistas or crèmebrûlée.

Jennifer described her attraction to the process: This type of painting is a stretch. You have to give up control, which can be difficult. If you don't step aside, so to speak, it doesn't work. But when you surrender and let go - the beauty happens. It's an expressive experiment in creativity and that gives you a certain amount of freedom. The combination of air, water, earth, and heat can generate amazing results. In reality, you are just a conduit for the art, because all those forces influence the final result. I always start with a peaceful and calm intention, and I hope that is what others experience as well.

The beautiful range of results speak for themselves, and the Friends of the Library are delighted that Jenn's first major energizing and engaging exhibit will be at the Newtown Square Public Library through August 26th. Tali Guy’s Recipe Page Stir Fried Artichoke And Mushrooms The artichoke is the flower of a thorny bush whose peak season is Spring. It is a desirable part of Mediterranean diets. It is low in calories and high in fiber. The artichoke may be prepared and eaten in many forms, in a salad, cooked, in pasta, steamed, or stuffed. It is found fresh, frozen, canned or in jars, marinated in vinaigrette, or in oil. The following recipe describes using a fresh artichoke, but it may also be used in any other available form.

4 fresh artichokes 2 cups sliced mushrooms (any kind) 1/2 lemon 3 table spoons olive oil 1 table spoon butter 1/4 tea spoon salt 1 table spoon capers 4 garlic cloves - pealed and smashed 2 bay leaves 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 cup chopped parsley

1. Prepare a bowl with 1/2 gallon cool water and squeeze the 1/2 lemon into it. Add the squeezed lemon in the bowl as well.

2. Lay the artichoke on a wooden cutting board. Use a sharp kitchen knife to cut the stem, and the green leaves all around the artichoke sides.

Cut the top half of the artichoke and discard of it. Trim any remaining green leaves around the bottom.

3. Cut the artichoke into quarters and remove the hairy center. Slice the quarters into 1/4" slices and put them in the lemon water bowl (to prevent the artichokes from becoming black).

4. Boil 1 gallon water and add 1 table spoon salt when the water reaches boiling. Take the artichoke slices out of the lemon water and add to the boiling water. Continue boiling for another 5 minutes.

5. Remove the artichokes into an empty bowl.

6. Heat the oil and butter in a heavy frying pan. Add the 1/4 tea spoon salt, capers, garlic and bay leaves. Stir for 1 minute and add the artichoke and mushrooms. Keep stirring for 5 minutes.

7. Pour the wine and keep stirring until the alcohol evaporates for approximately 3 minutes.

8. Add the parsley and stir for 1 more minute.

9. Serve hot or cold, and enjoy.

These days, when temperatures rise and the scenery is green, there is an abundance of beautiful strawberries at relatively low prices in the produce department. Everybody loves strawberries at all ages. Strawberries are low in calories and are loaded with Vitamin C. Now is the time to enjoy them.

Here are 3 different recipes that will be a pleasure to add to our daily menu:

Miracle Light Strawberry Moose

Easy to Make Strawberry Pastry

This amazing recipe is a real miracle, as you get a full bowl of airy light moose out of a single egg white. It is very easy to prepare, has no fat and very few ingredients. Eat it either at room temperature or frozen.

Ingredients: 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (approx. 1/2 lb) thawed 1 pack cream cheese (8 oz) 5 tbsp sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 lb strawberries 1 large egg

Ingredients: 1 lb strawberries, washed and without leaves 3/4 cup sugar - 1 tsp vanilla extract Juice of 1/2 lemon - 1 large egg white

Green Salad with Strawberries

Ingredients: 3 cups spring mix leaves 1 small red onion - sliced 1/2 cup Feta cheese crumbles 1 cup strawberries

Preparation: 1. Process the strawberries, sugar, vanilla and lemon juice in a food processor until reaching a smooth mixture (leave a few strawberries aside for decoration).

2. Put the egg white in a mixer bowl. Add the strawberry mixture and beat for 5 minutes. The volume of the mixture will grow enormously.

3. Pour the mixture into personal serving bowls and garnish with the remaining strawberries.

4. You may freeze the mixture and enjoy is later as a frozen dessert.

Preparation: 1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. Wash the strawberries, remove the green leaves, and slice.

3. Mix the cream cheese, the sugar and the vanilla in a small bowl.

4. Roll the sheet of thawed puff pastry to 1/4" thick. Cut into 5" squares.

5. Lay parchment paper on a baking sheet.

Lay the pastry squares on the paper.

6. Use a table spoon to spread cheese on the pastry squares, leaving 1/2" edge.

7. Lay the strawberries on the cheese.

8. Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the edge of the pastry squares.

9. Bake until the edges become golden, approx. 15 minutes.

Dressing: 1 tbsp honey 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 tsp mustard 1 tsp salt 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 tsp black pepper Preparation: 1. Wash the strawberries, remove the green leaves, and slice.

2. Put all the salad ingredients in a bowl.

3. Put all the ingredients for the dressing in a small jar and shake thoroughly.

4. Pour the dressing on the salad, mix and enjoy.

Health Corner CT Scan Offers Early Detection Of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is one of the most common and deadliest forms of cancer, claiming more lives each year than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Unfortunately, it's also a cancer that is rarely detected early.

“By the time people begin to experience the symptoms of lung cancer - a raspy or bloody cough, shortness of breath, recurrent pneumonia and bronchitis, chest pain - it's often when the disease has reached advanced stages. This makes it more difficult to treat,” explains Michael Walker, MD, chief of thoracic surgery and medical director of Main Line Health Cancer Care.

Who Is Considered At High Risk For Lung Cancer?

People who are smokers or who have a history of smoking are at a higher risk for lung cancer than people who have never smoked. This includes people who: Are between 55 - 80 years old Are an active smoker or have quit within the past 15 years Smoked at least one pack per day for 20 years or two packs per day for 15 years If you fall into any of these categories, you may be eligible for a low-dose CT scan. Other factors, like your history of lung cancer and disease, may also make you eligible to receive this low-dose CT scan. If you are currently a smoker or you have a history of smoking, ask your doctor whether this scan might be right for you.

The screening is paid for by many insurances, including Medicare. Be sure to check with your own insurance company to determine whether you'll have any out-of-pocket expenses.

Recognizing The Signs And Symptoms Of Lung Cancer

While a CT scan remains the most effective way to detect and diagnose lung cancer early, it's still important to recognize

symptoms that may be early indicators of lung cancer. These symptoms include: A new cough or a cough that doesn't go away Shortness of breath Coughing up blood Weight loss Headache Bone pain Chest pain Symptoms like these should prompt a visit to your doctor - especially if you have a history of smoking or exposure to carcinogens.

“Lung cancer kills 160,000 Americans every year and is often only discovered in the later stages, when it is difficult to treat. Early detection, before it spreads to other areas of the body, makes it easier to treat and can save your life,” says Dr. Walker.

Lung cancer screening options were limited in their ability to detect the disease early. In 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) approved a new lung cancer screening test: a low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan.

Unlike traditional chest X-rays, which are limited in their ability to detect a tumor in its earliest stage, this CT scan can detect lung tumors and abnormalities when they are as small as a grain of rice. It does this by taking dozens of X-ray images of the lungs from several different angles - far more than a traditional chest X-ray.

“A CT scan provides a much more comprehensive view of your lungs than traditional chest X-rays, which only detect tumors when they've grown to be about the size of a small coin,” says Dr. Walker. As a result, lung cancer can be detected and 14

Senior Lifestyles Exercise is the Key for Healthy Aging

Health experts have the long known the benefits of exercise. It helps strengthen the cardiovascular system, reduce bone loss, improve digestion, prevent chronic diseases and avoid weight gain. Some older adults are reluctant to exercise because they believe exercise must be rigorous or painful to have benefits. “As you age, you should strive for consistency rather than intensity - ideally 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day,” says Jacqui, personal trainer in the Fitness Center at Surrey Services for Seniors in Devon.

The ideal exercise regiment for older adults should include the following three components which can be adapted for anyone's unique stamina and abilities.

Aerobic and endurance exercises.

Walking, stationary cycling or swimming for 30 minutes daily are great aerobic exercises for seniors. If 30 minutes is too tiring at first, try breaking exercise into two 15-minute or three, 10-minute sessions.

Strength and resistance training.

This can be done using small, hand weights, bands or your own body weight (lunges or squats). Two or three strength workouts per week provide the greatest benefits to help prevent bone loss and improve balance.

Stretching and flexibility. Classes that provide stretching and strength training are essential as you age. Activities like yoga and Pilates particularly help with balance and fall prevention because they strengthen supportive muscles while reducing stiffness.

Summer Vacation!

Hello Parents!

The summer is here! What are you going to do? It is crazy how the years fly by. Having the summers to spend with your middle school kids is such a gift (really, it is) and the time can slip by so quickly. Take full advantage of this opportunity and make some amazing memories. Here are a few ideas for you and your family to think about: Totally unplug. If you go on vacation, you and your kids should turn off and put away the cell phones. This is liberating and allows you all to re-set and get back to basics. Things like talking to each other, looking around instead of down and being present in the here and now are good things.

Go back to the 1970's! I vividly remember being outside all day, working on my burn, playing Wiffle Ball (you still can't hit my knuckle ball), swimming and having completely unstructured time to be a kid. Allow your kids this same opportunity and embrace it! Play some Lynyrd Skynyrd, put on some tight OP shorts, relax and play with your kids. Having nothing planned is awesome. Un-structured time also allows your kids to use their imagination.

Use all of the vacation/personal time you can. The kids are only young once. When possible, take more than a few days off so you can get into a re-laxed vacation tempo. I think in the travel business they call this the rhythm method, but I may be wrong on that.

The school year is crazy busy with homework, sports, etc. Perhaps your kids have not had time to really help with the daily chores around the house. Consider creating new responsibilities for the kids during the summer months.

Cooking lunch, folding the laundry, whatever helps your home run, they can contribute. For example, at Camp Safety Last, the kids are learning how to prune trees close to power lines. When a minimal level of competency is reached this could be on their weekly chore list.

restaurant, go camping, visit a town you have always wanted to see.

Doing some-thing new can be energizing and breaking the routine can be refreshing. (If you go camping, you may want to sprinkle hot dogs around the tent perimeter to allow the kids to see wildlife really close up. Let me know how that goes.)

What did you love to do before you had kids? Maybe the kids are ready to learn and participate in those activities. Long bike rides, fly fishing, golfing, knitting, wild boar hunting. If you loved it, maybe your kids will too.

Having amazing family time does not mean spending a ton of money.

It means sharing real time together, laughing and having fun.

Too much family time? Need some time without the kids? Play and sing along with the song “Wannabe” from the Spice Girls and your kids will leave you alone. Guaranteed to work. Tried it last night and it cleared the room.

I hope you have a wonderful summer!

Go Paintballing! The kids might be ready for this now. I recommend finding the people with annual memberships, wearing camouflage, toting their own high-end equipment, and challenge them to a game. Pain can be good for the kids.

When it is hot and humid, and you need time in-side, have the kids watch the original Karate Kid. When it cools down, they can wax your car.

Do something new that is outside of your comfort zone. Try a new

Sara invites all childrenth from the community to jointhus on July 10 , th 16th, 22nd, 31st, and August 5 , 9 & 10 (Camping Trip!), 14th, 19th, and 27th.

Confirmation class for outgoing 7th and 8th graders in the community will also be held this summer by Reverend Dr. Jeanne Thomas.

Pastor Jeanne will lead six interactive sessions, where students will gain an introduction to the Bible, the Trinity, worship, and discipleship.

Reverend Jeanne explained: “Middle school can be a tough time. Children this age are beginning to ask the hard questions, and the development of faith is part of the growth process. Confirmation class gives them space for the exploration of faith in a safe and supportive environment.

This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy refreshments while you browse and purchase original plein air artworks. A percentage of each painting will support children with needs at Garrett Williamson.

Following this exhibit, the plein air paintings will be exhibited at the Newtown Square Public Library throughout October and November.

This plein air event is part of Delaware County Art Week (www.delcoarts.org) which runs from September 21 - 28th. We hope you decide to experience the arts in Delaware County this September - at all the venues!

Summer Safety Tips Take the BITE Out of Summer - Safely!

We don't have Zika (yet), but now is the time Mosquitoes that cause West Nile Virus can breed in standing water as small as a bottle cap. Eliminating standing water breeding sites at home is the best long-term, environmentally friendly solution. Where standing water can't be eliminated, placing Bti "dunks" (available at hardware stores) in standing water pools is an environmentally friendly way to prevent mosquito growth.

Keep grass clippings out of the streets that wash into storm sewers and provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Check for standing water at these spots at least once a week, especially after rainfall: Birdbaths · pet water dishes · saucers under flowerpots (empty regularly or fill with sand) · open garbage cans · toys or other materials left outdoors · sheets of plastic, tarps and Jacuzzi covers · gutters clogged with debris or not graded for proper drainage · old tires (take to tire shop to be recycled or drill drainage holes) · litter (eggs can hatch in a pool as small as a bottle cap!) · holes where trees have been removed (fill with soil or turn into a rain garden) · lawn or landscaping depressions · floating debris in ponds · ornamental pools (stock with fish or aerate) · swimming pools (maintain proper chorine levels year round & make sure filter is operating from May through October)

To avoid being bitten: Wear light colored clothing, and long sleeves & pants when possible.

Repair tears in window screens to keep mosquitoes from sneaking into your home.

Stay indoors at sunrise, sunset and early evening when mosquitoes are most active.

Use yellow "bug" lights outdoors - they attract fewer mosquitoes (but they are NOT repellents) Carefully use insect repellent effective for mosquitoes with the active ingredients DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), Picaridin (KBR 3023), or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus [active ingredient: p-menthane 3,8-diol (PMD)] following instructions. Where covered, apply to clothing instead of skin.

Your greatest water safety assurance comes from adopting and practicing as many safety steps as possible.

Adding an extra safety step around the water can make all the difference.

You can never know which safety step will save a life until it does.

Stay Close, Be Alert and Watch Always watch your children and never leave them unattended Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings Have a phone close by at all times If a child is missing, check the pool first
