S MESSAGE

Community Resilience through COVID-19

Dear Township Resident, As 2022 slowly winds down, it has turned out to be an exciting year. The Board of Commissioners has been extremely active in moving the Township forward and implementing new programs and enhancing services throughout the community. The Board approved the construction of the new all-inclusive playground at Veterans Park, new website, 2.5 million in road restoration, new bocce courts, new pickle ball courts, and many more to come. I am happy to report that Marple Townshiop received another grant to assist with our goals on park improvements and starting in 2023, as part of the Veterans Memorial Park Master Plan, we will be constructing new rest rooms and an additional 50 parking spaces. We are also planning on making more improvements to Kent Park and increasing our trail system to enhance the recreation areas. We are excited about the many improvements that are coming to make our community a better place to live.

Emergency Notification System

Especially after the most recent Tropical Storm Isaias, I would like to remind residents about the importance of subscribing to the Townships Emergency Notification System. It is an essential service that provides information from our emergency management personnel so our community can be prepared for unexpected emergencies. In the event of an emergency that affects Marple Township, a subscriber who has provided us with their home and/or cell phone number(s) will be

contacted via a pre-recorded voice message about the nature of the event as well as proper response actions that the public should undertake. This service is provided by the Delaware County Emergency Notification System (DELCO ALERT), a strategic voice messaging system. Although the Township has provided Delco Alert with a general database of Marple Township home and business phone numbers, all residents are urged to subscribe all of their phone numbers (home and cell) to ensure that they receive

proper emergency voice notifications. To subscribe: http://www.co.delaware.pa.us/ delcoready/delcoalert.html

Once again, our number one goal is public service and we see it as an honor and privilege to provide it to you. Should you ever need to talk with me personally, please feel free to contact me by telephone at (610) 356-4040.

car to or from, ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings. You'll be amazed not only at what you see but also who might notice you being aware. And though you will probably never even know it, doing all these things will discourage and prevent crimes of opportunity and drastically reduce your chances of being a victim. Immersing yourself in your phone may make you feel as if you're in your own safe little world, but bad actors see you as an easy, oblivious, checked out target.

Please continue to help us help you by reporting crimes, things or people that don't seem right, and quality of life issues. Our officers are very proactive but cannot see and know all. Call 911, stop in our HQ to speak with an officer, or sidle up to one in the coffee line. When you do, you can bet the officer will be the kind you would expect from MTPD - friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. From traffic enforcement to criminal activity to coaching local sports teams in their spare time, our officers are engaged & involved in this community. The

Ambulance Corps (MTAC) subscription program will be mailed in September. Being a contributing member of our subscription program can protect you from costly out of pocket expenses if you or a family member should ever suffer an emergency. Once your insurance carrier has been billed or any appeals processed for covered emergency ambulance services, we will use your prepaid subscription fee to cover your out of pocket expenses.

Your subscription program contribution provides you with these important benefits:

Medically necessary emergency ground ambulance service (911) transportation to the closest appropriate hospital.

Coverage for anyone residing at your residence or, anyone employed at your business.

Are My Trees OK?

We share our land and our lives with our trees. Year in and year out we watch them struggle to grow and prosper, withstanding occasional drought, fierce storms, and burdensome snow and ice. They endure assaults by air pollution, bugs, critters and diseases. Some are damaged by power mowers, weed whackers and chainsaws. All the while, as they cope and grow, they provide us with essential gifts: cooling our air, reducing soil erosion, absorbing air pollution, generating oxygen, and offering beautiful flowers, nuts, cones which makes them critically important habitat for desirable pollinating insects, birds and other creatures.

Trees add significant value to our residential property. However, they require routine care from homeowners to remain healthy, vital and safe.It isextremely important to examine them over the seasons to identify potential structural and systemic problems that can be addressed. Be sure and learn at least the common names of the tree species in your yard so you can distinguish health problems from unique characteristics that certain types of trees have such as shaggy bark or curling foliage. This important process will help you know if a tree needs professional attention and you should contact a certified arborist.

TRIAGE

It is important to check three locations on a tree; its branch canopy or crown, its trunk, and its roots,at least twice during the year.Consider the each tree's age and location, take into account the tree's history any eventsrain or snow storms, melting road salt, lightning strikes, or drought--that suggest potential trouble.

Check each tree's canopy: Does it develop healthy and vigorous summer foliage?Vigor is indicated by density of foliage and its color and size.

Has it been topped or the branches improperly pruned so that stubs protrude? Are any branches damaged from rain or snow events?

Note branches that cross one another and rub. They are causing weak spots.

Are some of the branches dying or dead? Often called “widow makers” because of their potential for falling unpredictably. If these branches are over 1 inch in diameter make sure they are removed promptly.

Check each tree's trunk: Note forked trunks. They are inherently weak, especially when bark grows over the crotch and there is potential for decay. In the case of young trees, remove one of the trunks. Monitor a tree trunk that is leaning.

If it has recently tipped farther toward the ground it needs examination by a trained arborist.

Check trunk surfaces for signs of wounds from frost cracks, lightning scars or root injury. Falling bark is not necessarily a sign of a problem. Many tree species shed their bark routinely.

Notice signs of decay or mold on the trunk. Evidence of woodpecker visits suggests that there are insects under the trunk's bark.

Check for assaults by pests such as Emerald ash borer and spotted lantern fly which may need treatment from a certified arborist.

Check each tree's roots

Lots of tree problems have their start in their roots. Many are incorrectly planted and from the beginning so the health of the roots and the tree are compromised. Look for signs of mushrooms on surface roots, or damage from animals that dig around them.

Assure that the root flare, where the roots emerge from the base of the trunks is not covered with piled up soil from having been planted too deeply or over mulched.

Check to make sure local construction projects have not disturbed, covered, or even cut into the root systems of your trees.

The time you spend to evaluate your trees' health and stability over each year will pay enormous dividends. Identifying problems and enlisting the help of a professional arborist when the tree is young or the problem has not become severe saves homeowners lots of money and assures them a long happy relationship with their trees.
