COMMISSIONER’S MESSAGE
Beautiful Old Glory
You're driving westbound on West Chester Pike crossing Lawrence Road and then you see it. It is a solemn and patriotic site that when seen, gives you the chills. Old Glory sits on a hill at the onramp of the blue route, 476 Southbound. When you are sitting at the traffic light and you look up and to the right, you see her waving in the wind. She is majestic and beautiful, and she was the idea of two men. Not long after 9/11, two local guys had an idea to raise a flag that would be noticed by everyone in the area. It would be a symbol to remind people of what we stand for. They climbed the hill every day, time after time lugging 80lb bags of concrete on their shoulders and buckets and buckets of water. If you stand at the bottom of the hill and look up, it appears as though it is straight up in the air. They carried the huge flagpole up this hill. They dug a hole and set the pole up. The hole had to be deep enough so that when the pole was set and the flag was flying, it would not fall over if it became too windy. I do not think that these two men had any idea as to how important that flag would become. How much that flag would mean to so many. If you look at the flag and think about what these two guys had to do to eventually get it to what it has become today, you will think that something such as this could only have been done by a couple of young guys. Young guys who would have no problem climbing the hill repeatedly to complete such an adventurous journey. It may come as a surprise to you that the two men responsible for the flag at the blue route are two brothers who are up in years but are incredibly young at heart. They are veterans of war who have an enduring love for their country and are two of the youngest seniors that I have ever met. Joe and John Cavallo contacted me back in 2002 regarding the lighting of that flag. It took about three years to complete the project. Thanks to State Representative Bill Adolph, the flag is now lit and looks more dramatic in the evening hours than it ever has. When driving up or down West Chester Pike, if you see the flag, think of the Cavallo brothers and all the hard work and perseverance that it took to give us all a glimpse of freedom, a glimpse of Beautiful Old Glory. We are excited to announce that Marple Township is now accepting online payments for refuse and sewer bills. To make an online payment by credit card or e-check, please visit the Marple Township website at www.marpletwp.com and select the online payment icon on the lower righthand side of the screen if using a laptop computer. If you are using an IPAD, please scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will see the online payment ICON. Since online payment processing is offered as a convenience, there is a small fee that the user will incur to take advantage of this feature. We continue to take in person payments at the Township building between the hours of 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Also, for your convenience afterhours or on weekends, you may place your payment in
the drop box located outside the front door of the Township building. Sewer bills were mailed to residents on June 30th and were due by July 31, 2023, with no penalty. Payments made after this date will be accessed a late charge. Please note that your sewer fee is not included in your mortgage escrow. This is a fee for service to help maintain the infrastructure that carries the water away from your home and back to the sewer plants for recycling. Your sewer fee is based on your actual water usage for the prior year. If you have an in-ground pool or a sprinkler system, you may purchase a separate meter to keep track of the water that is not going into the sewer system. If you provide us with before and after readings, we will adjust your bill accordingly.

Complete all online banking on a secure network. These will usually include “https” at the beginning of the link. Should access to your bank account be accessed by someone who is not authorized, immediately contact your bank, and freeze all accounts. HEALTH & INJURY PREVENTION WHAT IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?
Cortisone injections often provide excellent relief from symptoms. Unfortunately, symptomatic relief is only temporary, and most people experience a recurrence of symptoms after 3-4 months.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. The condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the handthe median nerve is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist.
For chronic or more advanced cases, carpal tunnel surgery is often recommended as the best course of treatment.
In addition to numbness and tingling, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause swelling, weakness, and night time pain. Patients sometimes describe dropping things unexpectedly and may have difficulty with buttoning shirts, tying shoelaces, or handling loose change.
What can I expect from surgery?
Surgery provides more space for the median nerve and relieves pressure on the median nerve and tendons. This procedure is typically done under light sedation and local anesthesia and usually takes only minutes to complete.

What causes carpal tunnel syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is frequently seen in individuals who develop swelling or inflammation in their hands. What can a hand surgeon do to help?
While there are several different approaches to performing carpal tunnel surgery, usually a 1/2 inch incision is made near the wrist and use of a camera to release the tunnel under direct visualization. This minimally invasive approach minimizes discomfort following surgery and allows patients to return to activities more quickly. Over 95 percent of patients improve dramatically following surgical intervention, with most returning to daily activities within days.
