RESTORATION & REUSE PLANNED FOR HISTORIC CASSELBERRY HOUSE The Board of Supervisors is pleased to announce that the Township has signed a lease with the Skippackbased Jaybird Foundation to restore and adaptively reuse the historic Casselberry House site. The vacant property will be reimagined as a space for community connection, education, and cultural engagement. The Supervisors recognize that historic preservation not only saves structures but also preserves stories and strengthens community connections. This public-private partnership carries special significance during the America 250 PA celebration. “This project is incredibly meaningful to me because it represents what's possible when community, history, and partnership come together,” said Cortney Marengo, Jaybird Foundation President. “Over the past year, we've worked alongside Lower Providence Township to reimagine what the Casselberry Property can be, not just a preserved historic site, but a living, active space that serves people. Being able to honor its history while creating opportunities for connection, education, and small business growth is exactly the kind of impact we hope to make through the Jaybird Foundation.”
historic site built circa 1734. The main house and its outbuildings served as General George Washington's headquarters in 1777 following the Battle of Brandywine. It later operated as a 19th-century tannery. Engineering and architectural assessments have found the main house to be structurally sound, although repairs are needed. The smokehouse on the property requires stabilization and roof replacement. The Foundation will utilize the auxiliary building as its headquarters. The main house will be rehabilitated for use by nonprofits, small businesses, or community
organizations. The grounds and remaining historic structures will be preserved for educational programming, heritage events, and public engagement. Through thoughtful restoration and adaptive reuse, the Casselberry Property will be transformed from a maintenance liability into a vibrant, income-generating, and culturally significant community anchor, bridging the past with a sustainable future.
