Winter Driving Demands Your Full Attention.

Traffic fatalities and injuries in the U.S. are increasing faster than we have seen in decades. Winter always brings its own unique set of traffic problems, so this month I want to highlight a few points and techniques that have helped me be a safe winter driver over the years.

Checking gauges and constantly monitoring road conditions takes thought, eye scanning, analysis and concentration. It's impossible to pay full attention to changing road conditions if your eyes and mind are focused

As I drive, I'm always “eyes up,” scanning for danger areas such as driveways, gas stations, strip mall exits, etc. Once you see intersections coming up, look for vehicles so you know as early as possible if a car is approaching an intersection or waiting to pull out. Most drivers are not good at judging speed and many do the classic glance and go, not even attempting to analyze an approaching vehicle's speed. It may not seem fair, but it is totally up to you to figure out what these drivers may do and have a plan. The earlier you see a potential problem vehicle, the more time you will have to react and avoid them if they actually pull into traffic. On slippery winter roads, this “eyes up” technique is even more important, as it can give you valuable extra time and distance to evade.

I learned this final point long ago, while driving my Chevy Malibu through two Michigan winters. I always kept a few supplies in my vehicle: a warm waterproof jacket, a wooly hat, walking boots, gloves, an ice scraper, water and some snacks. These days I would add in a phone and a spare phone battery/charger. This is not a complete list but it was enough to help me out a couple of times. You never know when you might get stuck, so take the time to prepare.

During my more than 30 years of living in the U.S., I have called several states home and have dealt with two Michigan winters. I also travel extensively throughout the northern states during winter months, so driving out of an airport rental car lot, with frozen fingers, in blizzard conditions, is not an uncommon scenario for me.

It is also not uncommon for me to see distracted drivers on the roads.

Manipulating, looking at, or talking on a phone while driving is remarkably dangerous. Doing so while driving in rain, snow or at night is like begging for a crash.

Winter driving demands your full attention, as the nights are much longer and many people end up driving to and from work or school in total darkness. Road conditions in winter can change very quickly, such as a wet road icing over in seconds or light blowing snow suddenly settling, causing havoc. Also, signs informing drivers a bridge can freeze before surrounding roads should never be ignored.

I never mess with or manipulate my phone while driving. Instead, I have an app which autoreplies to people trying to call me by texting or speaking the message, “I am driving, will call you later.” I advise everyone to use/enable such an autoreply app. They often come standard on most new phones, and if not, there are several apps you can download.

on your phone. Even hands-free phone use is as mentally distracting as hand-held.

This may sound unbelievable, but I frequently see people tailgating while I'm driving in snow. This is particularly dangerous because braking distances increase when the surface of the road becomes slippery. In rain, up to 50% can be added to a vehicle's stopping distance, depending on driver expertise, tire type/condition and vehicle weight. On snow, stopping distances can be tripled or more, depending on how much snow is present, whether the road is flat or on a slope, driver expertise, type of tires and vehicle weight. In snow, I leave at least four seconds between my vehicle and the one in front of me, as opposed to my normal two seconds. If I am being tailgated, I push that to around 6 seconds, in order to compensate for the tailgater and lessen my need to suddenly brake if traffic slows ahead of me.

Another point to remember: ABS brakes work very, very well, but can be confused by ice and snow. This can also add to a vehicle's stopping distance, so again, leave more room in these conditions.

Imagine a vehicle pulling out of an intersection in front of you. In dry daytime conditions this is probably nothing more than an annoyance. You easily avoid a crash by braking, but. if that same scenario happens on a snow covered road, it highlights the importance of “seeing” that vehicle much earlier in order to give you more time to prepare and react.

Winter has already begun to raise its head.

Unfortunately, drivers using phones will continue to be distracted, dangerous and vulnerable. Please be careful out there this holiday season.

Bridges do indeed freeze before roads, and there's a good reason why. ... First, cold air surrounds the surface of a bridge from above and below. This means that bridges lose heat from both sides. Bridges have no way to trap heat, so they will ice rapidly as soon as the temperature decreases to the freezing point.

Salt Alternatives For Treating Icy Sidewalks & Driveways Spreading rock salt (sodium chloride) on roads and driveways reduces ice formation, allowing for safer travel for pedestrians and motorists. Too much salt, however, can corrode metal on cars, damage gardens and trees, and pollute our local streams. All landowners can be part of the solution by using alternative products or by using salt at recommended times and rates.

There are several products that can be used instead of salt. Here are a few options to consider: Sand, clean kitty litter, and used coffee grounds - These products provide great traction. Sand can easily be swept up and disposed of afterwards, but kitty litter often creates mushy clumps. These products will absorb sunlight, contributing to melting and will not harm nearby plants and soil.

Ashes - For those with a wood burning fireplace, ashes are a great option. They provide a lot of traction and absorb sunlight, so will melt ice quickly on a sunny day. And they're free!

Beet juice - Increasingly being used by highway departments on its own or mixed with salt, this safe and natural product

allows ice to melt even when air temperatures are extremely cold.

Potassium acetate, calcium magnesium acetate - Acetates are super-effective even at extremely low temperatures and are biodegradable. The drawback? Price. They cost several times as much as rock salt and can be difficult to find. This is a good solution for small areas in environmentally sensitive locations, such as floodplains.

Other "chlorides": calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride Rock salt (sodium chloride) is not the only chloride product that can melt ice. These other products are generally more expensive than rock salt, but work better at low temperatures. Calcium chloride is the preferred choice over magnesium chloride, as it works at lower temperatures and is applied at a lower rate, leading to less chloride in our streams. Potassium chloride is considered safest for pets and plants, but is often more expensive and does not work well at lower temperatures. All chloride products contribute to pollutant loads in our streams and their use should be minimized.

If rock salt is the only reasonable alternative for your property, remember:

Remove as much ice and snow off paved surfaces as you can before applying salt to speed up melting A little salt can go a long way: Rock salt should be applied at about a handful per square yard Calcium chloride should be spread even thinner, about a handful for 3 square yards The air temperature matters. Rock salt is fiveo times more effective at melting ice at 30 F than 20oF, and ineffective below 20oF. Calcium chloride is better for temperatures down to 0oF. Applying early can prevent ice crystals from forming and minimize the amount of salt used overall.

FACT: Stormwater runoff can pick up chemicals, debris, dirt, and other pollutants that will contaminate our water. It is a common misconception that stormwater is treated before it reaches the waterways.

Ways You Can Help The Snow Plow Crews In order for the roads to be most effectively cleared, please keep these helpful tips in mind.

Trash Cans: Trash receptacles should not be

placed on the street. This inhibits the snow removal vehicles from doing their job. Please place your trash cans either on the lawn or curb in front of your property.

Sidewalks: Keeping sidewalks safe is another important winter concern. Residents must clear snow, sleet and ice from the sidewalks in front of their property no more than 24 hours after the snow or storm ceases. Property owners are also required to keep the sidewalk treated with material to abate ice and snow.

Hydrants: Please help our fire companies by clearing around fire hydrants after a storm.

Driveways and Parking Lots: Pushing,

plowing or throwing snow from private property into the street is prohibited because it is a road hazard. Snow should never be plowed onto or across a roadway.

Parking: From the beginning of the storm

until the roadway is cleared, vehicles, trailers, boats or campers should not be parked in the roadway.

Health Corner How Do We Best Address Teen Vaping?

A public health emergency upends years of progress.

After years of seeing the number of teen smokers decline, the rise of e-cigarettes and vaping (inhaling and exhaling of vapor produced by an electronic device) is leading to a substantial increase in use by teens.

What was initially touted as a healthier smoking cessation method for adults is having the opposite effect on teens.

These trends are alarming because for the decade prior, teen smoking had actually declined, thanks in part to the success of edgy public education campaigns, aggressive anti-smoking policies, and overall tobacco use losing the social cachet and acceptance it once had. Unfortunately, nearly 80% of youth were exposed to e-cigarette marketing in 2016 according to the latest information available from the CDC, and increased sales have outpaced medical research and knowledge of the near- and long-term health effects of prolonged use.

There’s more we can do to eliminate disparities in how we regulate tobacco products, regardless of their delivery system.

Just this month, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to ban the sale of all e-cigarettes, and new laws went into effect in Colorado limiting e-cigarette and flavored tobacco use. Widespread concern over the impact on youth smoking have led to these legislative changes.

Visit your local high school, and it’s obvious that teens are now vaping in record numbers. The 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey, which is funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration, shows e-cigarette use went up 78% for high school students between 2017 and 2018 alone.

Teens are now more likely to use e-cigarettes than other types of tobacco products. The Monitoring the Future survey, conducted by the University of Michigan, also found that nicotine use by high school students via vaping has nearly doubled.

Not all e-liquids or vape juice contains nicotine, but even without it e-cigarette aerosol can contain heavy metals and other potentially cancer-causing compounds.

Nicotine exposure during adolescence has been shown to be harmful and even increase the risk of potential use of other substances.

Vaping may also lead to conventional smoking, as National Institute on Drug Abuse has found that nearly a third of teen e-cigarette users begin smoking other tobacco products within six months.

The National Safety Council has addressed the public health impact of cigarette smoking by recommending six specific tobacco control measures, and a new policy to address electronic nicotine delivery system, or ENDS products, calling for additional regulations and raising public health risk awareness.

Many communities have been overwhelmed by the influx of teens who vape at school. At the 2018 National Prevention Network conference, public health advocates shared that some schools are starting to ban USB’s, as teachers can’t tell the difference between Juul devices (the most popular e-cigarette manufacturer on the market) and flash drives.

Media reports have indicated that schools go to extreme lengths to curtail use, such as limiting bathroom access, banning certain types of clothing that could be used to hide vaping devices, randomly testing

requiring child-resistant packaging for liquid nicotine containers, aiming to reverse an upward trend of accidental ingestion of e-liquids by children that were reported to U.S. poison control centers.

Nearly nine out of 10 cigarette smokers first try cigarette smoking by age 18, so reducing exposure to youth is key to preventing future health impacts. Prevention can happen at home, with parents and caregivers talking with teens about e-cigarettes; at work, by expanding smoke-free policies to include electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) products; and in our communities, by restricting use, sales and advertising to decrease exposure to young people.

Parenting Corner Resolutions!

an excerpt from Andrew Mullen’s book, Middle Schooled.

Hello Parents!

When do you normally sit down and think, “How can I be a better parent to my middle school student?”

Maybe you do that in between going to work and doing the laundry, or while picking up after the dog in the yard. Does your phone make a noise reminding you that between 12-1 on Thursday you are going to ponder ways to better support your children? You probably often find yourself saying “Sorry Sally, I can't go out to dinner with you on Saturday, I am brainstorming ways to improve as a parent. Maybe next time!”… Oh, you don't do that? (Insert judgmental tone and eye rolling from this author.) Hmmm, I think we have some work to do with you. The good news is there is a new year just around the corner! How about this: On New Year's Eve, instead of playing Cards Against Humanity or Twister with your friends, you can suggest that everyone come up with 5 of the most important social and emotional skills for your kids to focus on next year and share them with the group?

I suspect you might not get invited back to the party next year, but there is a price to pay for everything I guess…

More good news! I have decided to do the work for you! It is sort of like getting prepared food at the grocery store but way less money. Below you will find a few things that in my estimation would be admirable goals to discuss or at least keep in mind for your middle school child in the new year: Managing Friends Middle school is plagued with a very obvious and defined social ladder.

The kids all know who is “popular” and who is not. Often, if given an opportunity, some children will vie for a seat at the popular table at the expense of their real friends. Remind your children that real friends are kind and accept them for who they are. Real friends make them feel good and are nice; they treat them the way they want to be treated.

Self-Advocacy Encourage your child to speak for themselves, even if you are pretty sure they won't do it or will mess it up. The sooner they start asking for help and communicating what they need the better!

Time management The kids are busy. They will continue to have more academic demands placed on them as they progress through middle school. Making a deliberate and intentional plan for

how they use their time can be very helpful. If you see your child wasting an excessive amount of time and then freaking out because they have school work due or tests they are not prepared for, they may need to focus on this.

Figuring out how to study Some students have difficulty in school and the need to study hard has al-ways been a necessary skill for them. Other students can listen in class and get solid grades with little or no studying. These are the kids that don't know how to study.

Learning how to study is a pro-cess, an evolution if you will, that takes time. Encourage your child to start now by trying different strategies so they can figure out what works for them.

Senior Lifestyles Surrey also will introduce a new arts series featuring a different media each month. The arts programs are for anyone interested in learning about different creative techniques.

They are a great opportunity to try something new. In one of the first programs, participants will create a ceramic bowl that will be taken to a ceramic studio to be kiln fired. For the second part of the project, the artists will be invited to use it to enjoy a tasty soup or stew, scratch-made by Devon's chef.

Gardening & Landscaping Corner WINTER IN YOUR YARD Assuming they are suitably chosen for our cold-hardiness zone (let's say zone 6 to be on the safe side) our shrubs, trees and other landscape plants are not typically damaged by bitter cold, frozen ground or lots of snow.

More likely damage is caused by bright, glaring sunlight which reflects off snow, the glossy leaf surfaces of nearby evergreen plants, or even nearby windows or car surfaces. It dries evergreen foliage and tender bark of nearby woody plants. Also, strong winter winds sometimes whip tree branches around, which damage nearby plants if they break and fall. Ironically, mild winters can be more damaging than harsh ones. Fluctuating temperatures cause alternating freeze and thaw of soil around tree and shrub roots. As the soil expands and contracts, it disturbs roots and may actually heave recently planted trees out of the soil altogether.

What to do?

Be proactive. Check your property for potential problems. If you have a tree that has issues with dead branches, exposed roots, fungus on the roots or lower trunk, consider getting advice from a certified arborist about the potential for problems over the winter.

Protect the thin tender bark and stems of young trees and shrubs from rodent damage.

Voles, mice, chipmunks and rabbits seek cover under deep mulch or groundcover plantings such as ivy and pachysandra that crowd the tree trunks. They gnaw tree bark tissue when their normal food sources are under snow or not available. Clear away the groundcovers to a couple of feet from plant stems and spread only an inch or two of mulch over the root area.

Prevent deer damage to trees with protective wire cages. Make them tall enough to protect stems and branches if there is deep snow that deer can stand on to reach higher branches.

Support young and newly planted trees from strong winter winds by staking them or setting up barriers of burlap (never plastic!) around them.

Knock burdensome snow from the boughs of evergreen trees and large shrubs carefully.

Start with the lower branches first. Use a broom to gently bump the snow off, then repeat the process moving upward to the higher branches and then the top. Finally, redo the bottom branches to remove snow that has accumulated on them during this process.

Never try to remove ice from tree branches or to free trees, such as birches, that are bent over by snow or ice and attached to the ground. Let the ice melt and release the tree naturally.

Set out small flags on 2 or 3 foot tall stakes or posts along the edges of your driveway and any walkways that you will use during the winter. These will provide guidelines for shoveling or plowing so that you do not mistakenly damage lawn edges, tree root systems and snow covered planted areas.

When clearing snow at the edges of your property where adjacent roads have been salted, do not pile it on soil under street trees or on planted areas. When it melts the salty water will soak into the soil and harm your plants.

Gardening & Landscaping Corner What is wrong with Time To Start Planning Spring Gardens!

Butterfly bush?

This year, the Radnor Conservancy produced a poster showcasing some of the invasive plants that are commonly used in our backyards and landscaping projects with suggestions of native alternatives.

Our poster generated many questions, and we wanted to respond with some answers!

One question we have been asked more than once about a plant included in our list of invasive species is “what is wrong with butterfly bush??! The very name suggests that this is a plant which is good for butterflies, and could be a friendly addition in any garden to attract pollinators. Butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) produces hundreds of flowers on a single bush, which provide nectar for butterflies. Hundreds of flowers, however, means thousands of seeds, and this is what will enable the butterfly bush to escape from your garden and invade natural areas.

More importantly, for those wishing to support butterfly populations in their gardens, no butterflies or moths can lay their eggs on the butterfly bush because no caterpillars will eat them. Planting butterfly bush instead of native shrubs and flowers like American dogwood, Joe pye weed, milkweeds, etc., eliminates important food sources for butterflies with impacts on the entire food web, reducing food for birds.

The same can be said for most of the invasive plants on our poster. From Norway Maple, to Vinca minor, these plants have ways of spreading that ensure they will not be contained in our backyards, and they will eventually crowd out the native species that insects, birds, and animals reply upon for food and shelter.

The primary land use in Radnor, by a wide margin, is Residential Low Density (half an acre to two acre plots). Making a choice to plant native flowers, trees, and shrubs in our backyards is a powerful step towards helping nature thrive in Radnor. As we read reports of bird populations collapsing by 3 billion since the 1970s in North America, it can give us hope to recognize that there are ways of caring for our own parcels of land that could help reverse that trend.

Tali Guy’s Recipe Page Meringue Cookies Meringue cookies are sometimes thought to be hard to prepare and require professional know-how.

Actually, they are quite easy to make.

They do not contain fat or flour, therefore they are gluten free. Make sure to use room-temperature egg whites, which will produce more volume than otherwise.

At first beat with regular sugar. Later add confectioners' sugar. The confectioners' sugar has cornstarch that dries the cookies. You may add a drop of food coloring for a special occasion, such as pink or red for Valentine's Day or Christmas. You can also add chocolate chips or chopped nuts or chopped dried fruits.

Ingredients: 4 egg whites at room temperature A pinch of salt ¼ tsp cream of tartar - optional 1.5 cup sugar 1 cup confectioners' sugar 1 cup of 1 of the choices: (optional) chocolate chips, chopped or ground nuts, chopped dried fruits

Preparation: Put the egg whites, salt and cream of tartar (optional) in a mixer bowl. Use the egg-beater at a medium/low speed until bubbles appear.

Add the sugar gradually, 2 tbs at a time, while beating.

Increase the beating speed to high and continue for 10 more minutes. The egg whites will form stiff peaks.

If you choose to add color, add it now. Keep beating slowly until the color is fully incorporated in the mix.

If you prefer adding chocolate chips, nuts or dried fruits, do it now as well, and keep mixing slowly.

Add the confectioners' sugar and mix by hand.

Transfer the egg white mixture into a pastry bag with a tip of your choice. If you don't have a pastry bag, or the mixture contains chocolate chips, nuts or dried fruits use a spoon to make the meringue in free style shape.

Using the pastry bag or spoon drop any size and any shape of your preference on a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit over night. This process is actually more of drying than baking. The cookies will be dry and be easily removed from the parchment paper.

Store in an air tight container for up to 3 weeks.
