The Upper Merion Farmers Market currently operates under the umbrella of Upper Merion Township and is overseen by the Farmers Market Advisory Board.

The Market is conveniently located behind the Upper Merion Township Building, ideal for those who want to walk, bike, or drive to visit us. There’s plenty of parking at the township building, or in the overflow lot at Henderson and Ross Rds. You can also use the Upper Merion Rambler at the UMT Building stop and SEPTA Routes 99 and 124 at DeKalb Pike and Henderson Road.

The Market is open every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9:00AM to 1:00PM during the regular season (mid-May to November). We also offer a winter market, so that you can continue to enjoy your favorite products in chillier temperatures.

In addition to farm fresh veggies, locally produced artisan crafts, and sustainable products, there’s also plenty of fun-filled events and live music each weekend. View the Events page to see what’s on tap this season.

EAGLES MERE—SUMMER CAMP FOR ADULTS Imagine waking to fresh cool air, sounds of owls hooting, woodpeckers drilling, and wandering with a steaming latté to the lake's edge to see eagles fishing on Pennsylvania's second highest natural glacial lake. What could be a more inviting way to begin the day, every day? Your kids left the house 30 minutes ago on their bicycles to join in at “Sports Week” at the beach. Engage as little or as much as you desire. Famous artists make it their home. The town boasts three Olympic Gold medal winners. There are noted authors and photographers. There is something for everyone.

PennDOT, TSA: Federal REAL ID Federal enforcement will begin October 1, 2020 At an event at the Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) in November, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), along with the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA), reminded Pennsylvanians who want to continue using their driver's license or photo ID card as identification to board a domestic flight or enter a secure federal facility to upgrade it to a REAL ID-compliant version before federal enforcement of the REAL ID Act begins on October 1, 2020.

Beginning October 1, 2020, a federallyaccepted form of identification (whether it's a Pennsylvania REAL ID driver's license or ID card, a U.S. Passport/Passport Card, a military ID, etc.) must be used as identification to board a commercial flight or visit a secure federal building that requires ID at the door. REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses and photo ID cards have been available at the customer's option since March 2019, and to date, more than 500,000

Pennsylvanians have chosen to get a REAL ID-compliant product. Based on data from other states with optional REAL ID programs, PennDOT anticipates that approximately 1.3 million of its customers will get a REAL ID before the federal enforcement deadline of October 1, 2020.

Federal regulations require that to be issued a REAL ID-compliant product, PennDOT must verify the below documents:

Proof of all Legal Name Changes (if current legal name is different than what is reflected on proof of identity document): Examples include a certified marriage certificate(s) issued by the County Court for each marriage, court order(s) approving a change in legal name or amended birth certificate issued by the State Office of Vital Records/Statistics. If current name is the same as what is reflected on proof of identity document (usually birth certificate or passport), a customer does not need to show proof of legal name changes.

Proof of Identity Examples include original or certified copy of a birth certificate filed with the State Office of Vital Records/Statistics with a raised seal/embossed or valid, unexpired, U.S. Passport;

Proof of Social Security Number Social security card, in current legal name;

Two Proofs of Current, Physical PA Address Examples include a current, unexpired PA driver's license or identification card, vehicle registration, or a utility bill with the same name and address; and

REAL ID-Compliant Dirver’s License

Customers can bring the required documents to any PennDOT Driver License Center. More info about document requirements, including a printable document checklist, can be found on the Document Check page of the PennDOT Driver and Vehicle Services website.

Winter kills wiper blades and you'll need them to perform when Spring rain arrives.

During the Winter, your wiper blades need to work double time to remove the snow and ice that is accumulating on your windshield.

Wipers are not designed to do this - they are designed to remove rain. By Spring, your wiper blades may already be squeaking and streaking. This is a sign that replacement is required. Don't wait. Do yourself a favor and replace them now.

Top-Off Your Washer Fluid

We use much more washer fluid in the Winter months than we do in Spring and Summer. This could leave us with an empty reservoir when needed for bug splattering or road debris.

Change Your Cabin Air Filter

This is very easily overlooked, but it's so important! Most people do not know that their vehicle also has a filter that needs to be changed our periodically, just the like HVAC filter at home.

Cabin air filters clean the air you breathe inside your car. The air inside your car can be up to 6x dirtier than the air outside- yuck!

It should be changed annually, or every 12,000 miles. You can easily protect your family, especially if anyone has allergies, by having this changed at your next service.

Check Your Tires

Winter may be very harsh on your wiper blades, but it's even more so on your tires. If you have Winter tires, before you have them swapped out, you'll want to check your allseasons or Summer tires for proper tread depths. Consider replacement if the tread is below 4/32nds. We recommend talking to one of our tire experts about Nokian's All Weather WRG4. This will eliminate the need for two sets of tires, since the All Weather tires are a hybrid snow/all season tire.

Badly worn tires can be very dangerous on the road and adversely affect your fuel economy. Temperature can play havoc with your psi leaving them under inflated or over inflated. Don't forget to check the spare tire, too.

Home Maintenance Tips Spring cleaning gets all of the attention this time of year, but spring maintenance proves just as important, even more so in certain situations. Get your home in shape this spring by performing these preventive maintenance tasks.

1. Inspect Gutters and Downspouts

Gutters and downspouts must be free of debris and damage to correctly direct water away from your home's foundation. You do not want to learn about a clog by seeing water seepage into your home, whether in the basement or through the roof or fascia.

All can result in costly repairs.

4. Inspect Wood Decks, Railings, Windowsills and Steps

Check the wood around your home for rot that took hold during the winter months. If boards become soft or splinter, they create an unsafe situation for you and your family.

Replace whenever necessary.

5. Remove Mildew and Moss From Decks and Patios with a Pressure Washer

Pressure washing sprays away unwanted mildew or moss from just about any surface.

Use it to clean your tile patio, wooden deck or concrete driveway and/or walkway. If you do pressure wash a wooden surface, give it a fresh coat of stain or sealant to keep it protected and looking its best.

7. Look for Moisture in Basement and Crawl Space

When you get a good rain, look for leaks in your crawl space or basement that could turn into costly repairs. Also check regularly under bathrooms, the kitchen and laundry room to ensure pipes are intact and not leaking.

8. Inspect Laundry Room Hoses for Cracking

Your laundry room could also be a source of flooding. Check the water supply hoses to the clothes washer each spring for cracks.

When replacing these hoses, install a new rubber washer at the end instead of reusing an old one that might be cracked or worn which could allow a leak at the connection.

9. Inspect Grout in Bathroom Tiles

If you have ceramic tile in your bathroom, check the grout for discoloration and crumbling. Grout protects flooring, shower enclosures and countertops from water damage and it costs much less to replace than any of those items.

2. Remove Trees and Shrubs from Around House

Speaking of gutters, trees and shrubs too close to your home can brush up against them and cause damage during a windstorm.

Foliage also can damage siding and creates access for insect infestation. Trim foliage that brushes up against your home to prevent all of this.

3. Inspect Caulking around Doors and Windows

Experts recommend replacing the caulk around windows and doors each spring, as cold temperatures can cause cracks, which lets air leak in and out of your home. Water can also get in where it shouldn't through cracked caulk. Help increase the energy efficiency of your home with this task.

10. Replace Batteries in Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Give your window screens a once-over to ensure no critters or pests can work their way through bent frames, holes or tears. A little work now will keep you from having to remove unwanted guests from your home.

If you did not replace the batteries in these important appliances when we changed from Standard Time to Daylight Savings time, do so as part of your spring maintenance.

They should get fresh batteries twice a year.

Or you can replace the normal alkaline batteries with longer lasting lithium batteries.

These are great preventive maintenance tasks to take care of each year to help keep your home in good repair and save your hard earned dollars by helping you avoid more expensive repairs.

Environmental Update Montgomery County is a leader in promoting solar energy installations and the regulatory best practices that make those installations safer and easier to install. As of January 2019 Montgomery County had 1865 solar energy systems installed that generate 23.2 megawatts of electricity. The Montgomery County Planning Commission is working with municipalities, organizations, and residents to make solar projects safer, easier, and a good fit for every community.

In 2019, Montgomery County is working to achieve SolSmart designation from The Solar Foundation. SolSmart is a national designation program that provides a framework for municipalities and counties to reduce soft costs and take action to become more supportive of solar PV in their communities. Visit www.solsmart.org to learn more about the program. Local governments that achieve the appropriate actions under SolSmart become designated as "solar friendly". To date, more than 17 local governments in the region have worked to achieve SolSmart designation. Four municipalities in Montgomery County (Pottstown Borough, Cheltenham Township, Upper Merion Township, and Lower Merion Township) have already achieved designation. More information on the steps that these municipalities have taken to achieve designation can be found on the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s Solar Landing Page.

The Field Inspection Checklist for Rooftop Photovoltaic Systems (www.montcopa.org/DocumentCenter/View/25123/Field -Inspection-Checklist-for-Rooftop-Photovoltaic-PVSystems ) was developed in collaboration with

DVRPC, the Camden County Office of Sustainability, the Department of Energy, and with input from municipalities throughout the region. This checklist was developed to assist in-house and hired municipal inspectors with field inspections of residential rooftop PV systems in the Delaware Valley Region. The checklist may also be a helpful resource for solar PV installers as an additional reminder of the inspection requirements that must be met for their systems. The checklist was developed in 2019, and includes relevant code requirements from the 2014 NEC, the 2015 IBC and 2015 IRC. Home builders who want to construct houses that are designed to ease the installation of solar photovoltaic systems (Solar Ready Homes) may use this checklist to ensure their houses are constructed to minimize modification to accommodate solar energy systems.

Our 'home' is the Valley Forge Presbyterian Church. Each weekday we utilize two volunteers who meet at the church and travel to Norristown State Hospital to pack the meals. These volunteers leave the church between 9:00 and 9:15 each weekday morning and return with all of the meals between 10:30 and 10:45 A.M. Eight more volunteers gather at the church at 10:45 A.M. Once the meals arrive from Norristown State Hospital, teams of two leave the church with meals packed to

Trigger Finger

Stenosing flexor tenosynovitis or “trigger finger” is a form of tendinitis that affects the strong flexor tendons in the palm that allow the fingers to flex and bend down towards the palm. Each finger, except the thumb, has two tendons that bend the joints of the fingers. (The thumb only has one tendon.) These tendons glide within specialized tunnels called “sheaths” in each finger that keep the tendons lubricated to provide smooth movements. For many reasons, these tendons and their sheaths can become inflamed and the tendon can thicken in the palm.

As a result, a nodule develops and the tendon can no longer glide smoothly. As the condition worsens, the nodule may barely fit through the tunnel and “click” each time it passes underneath the tightened space.

Eventually, the passageway can become so narrow that the nodule no longer fits through and the finger becomes “locked,” most often with the finger flexed down and the fingertip near the palm. It takes extra force to “open” or extend the “locked” finger. The action of unlocking the locked finger is much like the trigger of a firearm that 22

will complain of pain along the course of the flexor tendon. Some patients describe it as “soreness” or “burning” in the palm and many patients notice swelling and “a bump” where the nodule has developed. Others feel as if the finger is moving slower than the others. It is also quite common to have pain on the top of the finger and stiffness at the middle (PIP) joint of the finger.

The “catching” of the finger or fingers can interfere with grasp, manipulation, and most activities.

Based on a patient's history and a physical examination, a hand surgeon can make the diagnosis of trigger finger. Other conditions that should be considered include Dupuytren's disease, arthritis, tendon injury and joint derangement. Fortunately, trigger finger typically has an excellent outcome. Although some may resolve spontaneously, various treatments including hand therapy, splinting, steroid injection, and surgery can speed recovery. In some cases, trigger fingers that have been present for long periods of time may lead to permanent joint stiffness and limited movement.

While the bond between us and our furry family members is unconditional, that isn't necessarily the case with people that your cat or dog either doesn't know. Being aware of body language and the non-verbal ways our pets communicate will not only increase your bond with them but will also ensure that they and the people they meet have an enjoyable encounter.

The basic rule of thumb when approaching an animal (dogs in particular) is to follow the acronym W.A.I.T. to see if the dog is with their W. Wait owner & if she/he appears friendly. the owner for permission to approach and/or pet their dog.

Generally, this is true that a wagging tail is a good sign, but there is more to this picture that is helpful to know. When a dog's tail is horizontal and wagging from side-to-side this is a safer/happier pup. If the wagging tail is vertical and 'stiff' in appearance, use caution.

A straight up or straight out unmoving tail is an indicator that the dog is 'on point' in a more defensive stance, and a tucked tail is a sign that the dog is either scared or getting ready to make a more aggressive move. Cats' tails when upwards in the shape of a

question mark are telling us that they're alert, curious, and approachable. Any rapid flicking of the tip of the tail, thumping, or a 'puffed' appearance should relay a warning to you to stay away.

We've all heard the expression that the eyes are the window to the soul, and that's not only poetic, it's applicable for cats and dogs as well!

Check them out when they're relaxed at home with you do you see any 'white' surrounding their amber/green/brown/blue irises? Probably not as this is only visible when an animal's eyes are widely opened and is an indicator of stress or anxiety. Is their brow furrowed?

Again, not likely when they're home & relaxed, so if noted this may indicate hyperfocusing or vigilance your pet is on the alert and is uncomfortable.

Relaxed Dog (Appropriate petting!)

Your cat & dog's sense of hearing is incredibly heightened, and those lovely ears are also an indicator of their present mood.

Please take a moment to note what the position of their ears is when they're at home and relaxed with you. It's different for pets with 'floppy' ears versus those that are always upright, but they can all move and dependent on how they're feeling the position of them will change. Forward facing, relaxed = happy and relaxed. Out to the side “airplane ears” in cats are an indicator that they're getting agitated. Flattened down & pulled back - WATCH OUT!

Say cheese! Some dogs 'smile' because they ARE truly happy, but others only show their teeth when they're on the defense, and cats generally don't open their mouths to pleasantly greet you. Any raising of lips, baring of teeth, open mouthed hissing, etc. are a very clear indicator that this meet & greet is heading south! Relaxed dogs may have an open mouth, but their tongue will be gently lolling out, and their overall demeanor will also appear calm.

It's so tempting to want to pet and/or snuggle these furry friends but keeping in mind that any interaction we have with an animal needs to be on their terms. We want you to enjoy every moment with your cats & dogs, and meeting one another should be a moment of happiness, not of concern.

Parenting Corner A letter your middle schooler might never send.

Dear Mom and Dad, This week has been difficult. Presenting projects and poems has been stressful. I know you think I am “overreacting” but this stuff makes me so nervous. When I get nervous I am even more self-conscious than normal. Do you have any idea how scary it is to speak in front of the class? My skin is breaking out, my braces hurt, I feel ugly and I am tired. It seems like everyone is judging me. If I mess up my presentation, everyone will be talking about me.

That is the worst. When I try to sleep at night I am worrying about everything. I am not sleeping well. No, I am not on my phone…well, not too much anyway.

What is happening with my brain? It is going crazy or something. I keep thinking about all this weird stuff like death and the future. Who am I anyway? What will I become? I hear the news about the world and we talk about some of it in school. It is all so scary. Why are people so mean to each other? I never use to think about these things and now all of a sudden I am. What the heck! Sometimes I miss being a little kid. Life was easier then, but I did not know it.

My whole body is changing. I know we talked about this a little bit (dad was so awkward) and they covered it in health class (the other kids were so annoying), but it is still super strange. Do you have any idea what is going on with me? I know you do, but I am not sure you remember when it happened to you. I am not freaking out, I know it is normal, but it does stress me out. That is enough about that.

Do you know all of my friends from elementary school? They are changing too. Our lunch table has become uncomfortable. My one friend is constantly talking about their crush. I am not exaggerating. They are like totally obsessed. The rest of us are so sick of it. Another is all of a sudden really into playing the guitar and thinks they are so cool. A few others only want to make Tik-Toks when we hang out, which is boring. I am still, sadly, not really that good at anything. I feel like I need to change friend groups but it is harder to do than it sounds. I could end up alone with no friends. Not to be a jerk but when you say stuff like “just get up and move tables” it is not very helpful. It is harder to do than you think.

I guess to sum it up, I have a lot on my mind. When you ask how I could forget to turn in my homework or forget to clean up my room, maybe you will understand now. I care about school, I really do.

There is/are just so many other things more important right now. It's hard to think about anyone but myself. I am trying to figure it all out and I am sure one day I will. For now, if you could be patient with me I would really appreciate it. If you think I am out of control, maybe you could make up some reasonable rules for me to follow or something. Oh, and when I am venting, if you could just listen and give me hug, that would be cool too. When I am rude, moody or act like a jerk, I hope you know I don't mean it. I think when I get to high school these things will be better, but for now, please try and understand.

Spotted Lanternfly Management The Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive insect that has the potential to greatly impact agricultural crops such as grapes, hops, and hardwoods and reduce the quality of life in heavily infested areas.

Egg masses are laid on trees, decks, houses, and other hard surfaces and are protected by a mudlike covering. SLF adults are the most detectable stage since they are large, brightly colored, and mobile. Professional pest managers use an integrated approach called integrated pest management (IPM) to eliminate as many SLF as possible while minimizing potential risks to the environment. One IPM method for destroying SLF is using “trap” trees. Thousands of SLF can be killed by one trap tree. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) is establishing many trap trees in the infested area to kill as many SLF as possible while minimizing pesticide use. Property owners can also establish trap trees on their land or hire a professional service to help them.

How do trap trees work?

Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a preferred host for SLF. In the fall, many SLF adults relocate to feed on tree-of-heaven. To set up trap trees, most tree-of-heaven trees are killed. The remaining treeof-heaven trees are treated with an insecticide that is moved throughout the entire tree. When the SLF adults feed on the treated trap trees, they ingest the systemic insecticide and die. As additional SLF relocate to feed on the trap trees, they also die.

Steps to establish a trap tree to kill SLF:

1) Identify all tree-of-heaven trees on the site.

Spotted lanternflies seem to prefer certain tree-ofheaven trees over others. Locate specific trees that are most attractive to the spotted lanternfly based on the number of insects feeding on them. For information on how to identify tree-of-heaven, see

2) Treat approximately 85 percent of the tree-ofheaven trees with a properly labeled herbicide. Kill all female tree-of-heaven trees if possible; they produce seed and contribute to the spread of this invasive tree. Leave only a few male tree-of-heaven trees that appear to be more attractive to the insect to serve as trap trees.

Herbicides recommended to kill tree-of-heaven trees contain the active ingredient triclopyr, which comes in two formulations: water based (amine) and oil based (ester). Both formulations are effective for controlling tree-of-heaven. Other herbicides are effective; but to prevent herbicide injury to trap trees through common root systems, limit herbicide selection to triclopyr. Herbicide application methods effective for controlling tree-of-heaven include foliar sprays, basal bark, and spaced-cut hack-and-squirt applications. Treating cut stumps is ineffective at controlling the tree-of-heaven; it will not control the roots. Herbicide applications made to control tree-ofheaven are most effective when applied from July 1 to September 30, when the plant is exporting sugars to the roots. Applications made outside this window

are not effective at controlling the roots and may only injure aboveground growth.

Cutting tree-of-heaven is often necessary to remove potentially hazardous trees, but it is not useful as a stand-alone control measure. They will resprout vigorously from stumps and roots. In situations where tree-of-heaven stems need to be removed, it is best to treat them with herbicide first and then cut. Allow 30 days for the herbicide to take effect before cutting. 3) Treat the remaining tree-of-heaven trap trees with an insecticide that will move throughout the tree.

For best results, apply the insecticide according to the label in June through August. When spotted lanternflies feed on treated trees, they will die.

Systemic insecticides known to be effective and labeled to treat ornamental trees, including tree-ofheaven, contain the active ingredients dinotefuran or imidacloprid. PDA is using dinotefuran to establish trap trees. Treating only trap trees reduces the total amount of insecticide used in comparison to largescale contact insecticide applications.

Stormwater Management Washing Your Vehicle Home Car Wash Tips: Where you wash your car matters.

The best option for our rivers is to take your vehicle to a commercial car wash, especially if you plan to clean the engine or the bottom of the car.

Most car washes reuse water several times before sending it on to a water pollution control plant.

Wash your vehicle on gravel, grass, or another permeable surface so the ground can filter the water naturally.

Vehicles washed in driveways and parking lots allow dirty wash water to find its way to the nearest storm drain. That water often contains oils and grease, phosphates (from the soap) and heavy metals—all substances that are unhealthy for people, fish, and other living things.

Use a hose that is high pressure and low volume. Fit your hose with a nozzle that automatically turns off, or has a pistol grip or trigger nozzle to save water.

Wash one section at a time and rinse quickly.

If you would rather wash your car at home, protect our local streams with these tips:

Use soap sparingly and try to use non-phosphate detergents.

Phosphates are pollutants that can be harmful to nearby waterways and promote excess growth of algae.

When you are done, empty the bucket of soapy water down the sink—not into the street.

If you are hosting a car wash fundraiser, consider selling coupon books. Many car wash companies offer fundraiser savings books to nonprofit organizations and sports teams at reduced prices. The coupons can then be used anytime by the supporter.

Gardening & Landscaping Selecting trees and the root systems that nursery or garden centers offer.

Trees require commitment. Young trees grow twice as fast when chosen and planted carefully and they will live twice as long as trees planted carelessly. They require some attention in the first year or two, mostly watering and protection from deer and mower damage. While large, older trees are available from nurseries, they typically will not grow as fast as those planted at a younger age. Young ornamental (and fruit) trees are available in local garden centers and nurseries in three types of packaging bare root, balled and burlapped (B&B) and containerized. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

Bare root trees are just that. They are

simply a branched trunk from 4 to 6 feet tall, with exposed roots at its base. They are not always readily available at nurseries and garden centers, but mail order nurseries offer them in a wide variety of species. They are very lightweight and easy to handle. They are also less expensive than young trees that are B&B or in containers. Bare root trees arrive with their roots wrapped in material to keep them moist and in a plastic bag for cool storage until planting time. Plant them in late winter or early spring while they are still dormant. To avoid planting too deeply, be sure the root flare at the base of the stem shows at, or slightly above, ground level after you put the soil in the hole over the roots. Bare root trees need staking for the first year or so to assure that they are stable.

The trees that many municipalities plant around town and those they offer to residents for tree planting programs are mostly bare root.

Balled and burlapped (B&B) trees are substantial. Their trunks are typically

6 to 8 feet tall. Their roots are embedded in a ball of soil that is wrapped in burlap and tied with string or surrounded by a wire cage.

They are commonly sold at nurseries, and also are available at some garden centers.

B&B trees can be fairly expensive because there are usually delivery costs included due to their weight. The advantages of B&B trees are that they are typically a bit bigger, you can plant them all year round if the soil is not frozen, and they generally do not need staking. However, planting them is somewhat more complicated because the burlap or wire must be at least partially removed and sometimes the root flare is covered by the soil on the rootball which also must be removed to establish correct planting depth.

The time to select and plant a new tree is always last year.

This is especially true when one of your existing trees is in obvious decline. Do not wait until it dies to replace it. Put its replacement in nearby now. It will be fully established and growing vigorously when you lose your old one. It is also true when you are contemplating a new landscape design. Get your trees in first and soonest and they will grow and thrive while you take your time developing the area around them.

Containerized plants are convenient.

The young trees are planted in potting medium in a nursery container. Available from about 6 to 8 feet tall, they are moderately priced and are relatively easy to bring home from the nursery or garden center. A great number of tree varieties are available in containers and they can be planted any time all year as long as the soil can be worked. Planting containerized trees is relatively straightforward, but it is important to probe the potting medium Balled & before planting to be sure that the roots have not wrapped around themselves.Check burlapped to see if the root flare at the base of the (B&B) tree trunk is visible. Often soil is piled on a containerized tree when it is in its pot, literally burying the stem for several inches.

Remove all extra soil to expose the root flare so it is at, or a bit above, ground level when you set the tree in its hole.
