Twice a day, King of Prussia Volunteer Fire Company VOLUNTEERS are called upon to help our neighbors. Whether it is a fire, rescue, storm related emergency, electrical odors, wires burning, or any other hazard you are concerned about or makes you feel unsafe; we are there to help.

If you are unable to individually assist us as a volunteer, we appreciate any financial contribution to help maintain our commitment as a 100% volunteer emergency service provider.

PA Beer Distributors Can Now Sell Singles & Six-packs!

'Free the six-pack' law goes live in Pa. As of January 17, 2017, beer distributors are no longer handcuffed to the case as the "free the six-pack" laws went live in Pennsylvania.

"How were we supposed to compete with their corporate deals?"

"Why don't we have choice? Why don't we have convenience like the other 48 states in the union?" Republican Corbett asked in 2013.

Weaver said that grocery stores are able to upcharge up to a 40 percent margin, something the smaller distributors cannot afford to do. He called the law allowing distributors to sell six-packs "payback."

His Democratic successor, Wolf, vetoed legislation for liquor privatization in 2015 because he said it was "bad for consumers."

Single and six-pack sales had already popped up in grocery stores around the commonwealth but the distributors had to stick to wholesale, which has been a detriment to their bottom line.

"It makes bad business sense for the commonwealth and consumers to sell off an asset, especially before maximizing its value," Wolf said.

Gov. Tom Wolf signed legislation back in November that allows beer distributors to sell six-packs and refillable growlers.

Additionally, liquor sales will be permitted at 9 a.m. on Sundays, rather than 11 a.m.

However, Wolf said that he was open to making wine and beer available in more locations like supermarkets.

"Creating and following this precedent will make the commonwealth more inviting for customers and businesses," Wolf said in November. "It will address a long-standing failing of our liquor and alcohol system while we continue to work on customer satisfaction for all Pennsylvanians."

Wolf has stopped short of full privatization of liquor stores, but has shown a desire to open up sales to private business.

Former Gov. Tom Corbett was enthusiastic about pushing forward liquor privatization.

Some of the plans included easing of restrictions on the sale of six packs of beer, while the more aggressive measures called for replacing state-owned stores with twice as many private outlets.

Corbett referred Pennsylvania's liquor laws to as a 75-year-old "antiqued system" and his plan was to ease the state into offering the

Nearby at Beer Guys in the Manoa Shopping Center in Havertown, owner Raj Mody said it will be a "welcomed change" to sell individual beers.

"People are going to be able to come in and mix and match," Mody said. "They can try before they buy a case."

For distributors, freeing the six-pack means a win for the little guy.

However, for beer distributor owners who after years of paying licenses that limited their sales felt as though the sudden inclusion of grocery stores to sell beer in more reasonable quantities was damaging to their business.

"We should have been allowed to do it first," said Gene Weaver, manager of Manoa Beverage on West Chester Pike in Havertown.

A Clean & Safe Garage As creatures of habit, rudimentary tasks often become second nature. Like when you pull into the driveway and without really thinking, reach up and hit the garage door remote, pull in, and hit it again. Now satisfied that the to-do list is pretty much completed, you exit the chariot and retreat into the house with confidence that all left behind in the garage is safe and sound. Right? Well, maybe.

Now, I may be exaggerating just a little, but something struck a chord with me when I heard about the most recent Oakland, California fire which destroyed an entire commercial warehouse, taking 33 lives. This immediately reminded me of the definition of "warehouse."

Second, and just as important, clear the entire floor area. You should be able to move in and around parked vehicles easily at all times. The authorities will be investigating that fire for months to come. But, what I got out of the preliminary report was that the building or "parts of the building" had been used improperly to store unsafe, highly combustible/flammable materials and that the better part of the building was disorganized and misused, causing the path in, around, and, most importantly, out of the building, difficult, if not impossible to navigate in the event of an emergency.

Now, that's safety smart on many levels.

Sports & Misuse of Prescription Drugs Understanding Non-medical /Misuse of Prescription Medications and Addiction

What is Addiction?

Addiction is a disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking behavior regardless of the consequences. As the illness progresses, an addicted person needs more of the drug, the illness becomes harder to treat, and the risk of overdose increases.

Misusing medication can lead to serious consequences including rapid addiction, other substance use, criminal activity, and even death.

People who misuse pain killers might not understand how these factors interact and put them at risk for serious negative consequences. Additionally, mixing prescription opioids with alcohol or other drugs is the leading cause of overdose death in Delaware County.

Prescription Medications The class of prescription drugs most commonly prescribed for pain is opioids, such as Vicodin, Percocet, Codeine, Demerol or Oxycontin. Under a doctor's orders, these medications can be very helpful. But if used improperly, they can be dangerous.

Most individuals who misuse prescription medications, particularly teens, believe these substances are safer than illegal drugs because they are prescribed by a doctor.

Doctors take into account things like the patient's age, weight, and medical history; the drug's form, dose, and possible side effects; and the potential for addiction, when prescribing medications.

70% of people 12 and older who abuse prescription drugs get them from family and friends, and 60% of teens who have abused prescription pain killers have done so before the age of 15.

It is important for parents/guardians to be aware of what substances your student athlete may be exposed to or using during the season. What are the signs and symptoms you should look for?

Signs of use

• Anxiety/Irritability • Insomnia • Long periods of sleep • Loss of appetite or Nausea • Watery eyes • Chills • Depression • Disorientation • Pinpoint pupils

• Forgetfulness • Increased sensitivity • Change in appearance • Receiving lower grades • Increased absence

Take Action! What can you do if your athlete is prescribed medication?

1. Know - Know what medications your athlete is using and the signs of use, dependency, and overdose.

2. Monitor - The adult in the household should maintain possession of the medication and closely monitor the dosage and refills. Although most youth are capable of self-administering over-the-counter pain killers, prescription opiates should be closely supervised by an adult. Set clear rules with your medications! Never share, take more than prescribed, or mix with other drugs.

3. Talk - Discuss the dangers of prescription medications with your athlete. Emphasize that just because they are prescribed by a doctor, it does not make them safe!

4. Lock Your Meds - Keep all prescription medications locked up to keep your family and friends safe! When the prescription is no longer needed, dispose of the unused medication at any of the Montgomery County Drop Box locations. (visit www.montcopa.org/index.aspx?NID=1766 for locations.)

The Upper Merion Area Community Alliance for a Safer Tomorrow (CAST) is a coalition of individuals from all sectors of the community working to create a healthy, safe, drug-free community for youth. Recognizing that student athletes may take prescription opioids for their sports injuries, CAST partnered with the Upper Merion Area High School Athletics Department to educate athletes and their families about the dangers of prescription drug abuse, the addictive nature of prescription painkillers, and the connection between opioids and the current heroin epidemic. At each pre-season parent meeting, families are given information about prescription opioids and are asked to share the information with their student athletes. Both the athlete and parents are asked to sign the policy sheet indicating that they have read and discussed the information on prescription drug abuse. The policy helps parents initiate important conversations with their teens, prepares them for conversations with their healthcare providers, and helps them know what to expect in the event of a sports injury. CAST also provided each high school classroom with a poster about prescription drug abuse.

This beautiful clump forming, herbaceous perennial has many noteworthy characteristics making it an excellent choice as a green ribbon native plant. It is a member of the Dogbane plant family or Apocynaceae. One trait expressed by members of this family is a milky/latex sap. Due to this, A. hubrichtii is not preferred by deer. It is known for its elegant powdery blue star shaped flowers which grow in clusters at the ends of the stems. These delicate flowers make an appearance in late spring around April and last until the end of May sometimes even longer. The foliage is another notable characteristic. These thin, filamentous leaves grow along the stem in an alternate fashion.

They are a beautiful green during the growing season and turn to a stunning yellow during the fall.

This foliage can bring nice texture and color to any garden.

Native to south-central United States Amsonia hubrichtii can grow to about 3 feet tall and spreads 2-3 feet at maturity. This plant is ideal for many different garden situations and is very low maintenance. It performs best in well drained, rich soil but can tolerate a wide range of conditions. A. hubrichtii produces the best fall color in full sun however blooms may persist longer if given some afternoon shade. It is also notable that Amsonia is

the winter to protect the roots from frost. Also it is recommended to prune in the early spring for a bushier growth form. Japanese beetles have been known to cause damage to the foliage of this plant if left unmanaged.

The common rose mallow or swamp mallow is an upright shrub-like herbaceous perennial that is commonly found in moist areas such as marshes or lake shores. H. moscheutos is a member of the Mallow family, Malvaceae. This plant is unique because you can bring those showy tropical looking hibiscus flowers to the garden. The flowers are typically a large, beautiful, funnel shape with five separate petals. Interestingly the stamens and stigma are fused into one structure called a column.

Petals are normally white, pink or red with or some variation in between. H. moscheutos flowers are normally darker towards the middle and can become quite large and showy reaching anywhere from 8 to 10 inches. Though an individual flower may only last a short period of time, the plant itself continues to bloom through late summer into fall.

The rose mallow can bring quite the accent to any garden and it is recommended to plant a group of 3 or more for a visually appealing effect.

The obedient plant or false dragonhead is a very fun plant that has some very unique qualities. First of all, the obedient plant's common name comes from the flowers' unique pliable nature. The flower heads can be pushed along the axis of the stem and will remain wherever they are moved. This makes the plant very useful for cut flowers or flower arrangements. This plant is a rhizomatous perennial that is a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae. A common characteristic of this family is a square stem. The flowers a pale lilac with a tubular shape and snapdragon appearance that grow on terminal spikes. The flower spikes bloom from the bottom to top from late June to September. P. virginiana has sharply toothed, lanceolate leaves arranged in an opposite manner.

The square stems can reach up to 4 feet but may fall over if the soils are too rich or it is not receiving enough sun. Beware this plant can spread rather aggressively either by seed or rhizomatously with stolons. To prevent this a gardener can pull up the undesired shallow roots to keep the plant tamed.

Obedient plant lives in a wide variety of habitats from open meadows to stream banks. It is native to much of North America from Quebec to Florida and even west to New Mexico. This plant is great because it can tolerate moist soils with poor drainage or soils on the drier end of the spectrum.

The nectar of this plant is desirable to many species of butterflies and even attracts hummingbirds.

Overall this is an excellent plant and can really give a show in the late summer, early fall especially if used in a rain garden.

This plant is native to the eastern and southern parts of North America and can be grown in hardiness zones 5-10. The rose mallow can grow rather tall, reaching anywhere from 5 to 7 feet in a single growing season. Since it is capable of growing so much it may need to be staked for support. The optimal growth conditions for H. moscheutos are full sun and moist soils rich in organic matter but, it can tolerate lower quality soils even those containing salt. It will grow very well in these conditions as long as the soil is not allowed to dry out. If this plant is being grown in colder regions, one should consider mulch during

Jenkins Arboretum - Preserving Plant Genetics Preserving Plant Genetics A Collaborative Effort As the Arboretum's plant collections continue to mature and space becomes more limited, it is important that we now narrow our focus. For rhododendrons and evergreen azaleas, an effort is made to collect only the very best hybrids or collections from particular hybridizers.

Specifically, these include the large leafed rhododendrons created by John Doppel and the evergreen azaleas created by Joe Klimavicz. When it comes to native, deciduous azaleas though, it isn't quite as straightforward.

One of the greatest benefits of participating in American Public Gardens Association's Plant Collections Network (PCN) is that it encourages you to think strategically about your curatorial practices, and collaborate with other like-minded organizations to ensure that plant genetics are being preserved. As we begin to focus on genetics, the provenance, or location from which the seed used to grow the plants was collected, becomes very important. Understanding this, we have had two exciting opportunities to add large numbers of known-provenance deciduous native azaleas to our collection.

The first was through a very generous gift of nearly 100 known-provenance native azaleas from our friends at Mt. Cuba Center. In total, there were 9 different species and 17 different accessions. These included some pretty exciting specimens such as a shinyleaved selection of R. arborescens (sweet azalea); a larger-than-normal flowering selection of R. colemanni (Red Hills azalea), a species only recently discovered; and the very late-blooming R. arborescens var.

prunifolium (plumleaf azalea). The donation also included 4 different accessions of flame azalea, R. austrinum which are now planted under the pine trees near the pond. With 17 seed-grown flame azaleas, it will be interesting to see the genetic variation which can lead to variations in growth form and even flower color. Yes, even though they are the same species, and even though flame azaleas are typically orange, some could end up being nearly yellow and some could end up being nearly red.

The second opportunity came from a seed collecting trip to the Southeastern US by Executive Director, Harold Sweetman.

Harold accompanied Tom Clark from Polly Hill Arboretum who was in search of the rare Pinkshell Azalea (R. vaseyi) for a research study. Of course, no good plantsman can venture into the woods in search of one thing and not end up with some others. Harold brought back 23 total accessions of 9 different species. The Arboretum's staff grew the plants on a light rack until they were ready to be pricked out and potted up. Now, there are hundreds of azaleas being grown on for

The earliest flowering trees usually start blooming the last few days of March. With the mild weather we had this winter many plants are blooming ahead of schedule.

When the Waters Rise, Will You Know What to Do? Put Rainwater to Work for You Harvesting rainwater is a simple way to make your household green and help your gardens prosper. Using rainwater instead of the tap to water your gardens will cut your water bill. It also keeps water from running off of your property and carrying pollutants into our streams. The two most common ways to put rainwater to work for you are rain barrels and rain gardens:

Floods are one of the most common weather hazards in the United States. They can happen anywhere at any time of year.

What is a Flash Flood?

Densely populated areas have a higher risk for flash floods than rural areas.

Flash floods can occur within minutes or hours of a heavy rainfall, and waters can rise as high as 30 feet or more. Even small streams and creeks can flood rapidly and cause damage.

Flash floods are usually caused by slow-moving thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service, "Flash floods are short-term events occurring within six hours of the causative event (heavy rain, dam break, levee failure, rapid snowmelt and ice jams) and often within two hours of the start of highintensity rainfall."

Flash floods can move homes and cars, uproot trees and destroy bridges. Because floods happen with little to no warning, residents in low-lying areas are particularly at risk. According to the American Red Cross, flash floods are the No. 1 weatherrelated killer in the U.S. Almost half of all flash flood fatalities are vehicle related, according to the National Weather Service. If you're driving and approach a water-covered

road, turn around. Just 6 inches of water can stall a vehicle, and 2 feet can float most cars, trucks and SUVs. Here are some other tips to stay high and dry: Know your proximity to rivers, streams and dams During heavy rain, avoid underpasses, underground parking garages and basements Avoid hiking or camping if thunderstorms are predicted

A rain barrel collects water from your roof and stores it for future use. You can connect a hose to the barrel or use it to fill watering cans. Rain barrels are available commercially at home improvement stores or you can build a do-it-yourself rain barrel at little cost; see www.diynetwork.com/howto/how-to-create-a-rain-barrel for simple instructions. Most barrels hold 55 gallons of water and will fill quickly during a storm. Make sure to include an

overflow pipe to transport excess water away from your house. Also, a screen or filter on top is essential to prevent mosquitoes.

A rain garden is a collection of water-loving plants in a slight depression in the ground.

Running a downspout towards a sunken garden will capture rainwater and allow it to slowly sink into the ground over the next day. Rain gardens should be located at least 10 feet away from your foundation. Their size varies based on how much roof area is draining to the garden.

Resources on building your rain garden can be found many places online, including www.raingardensforthebays.org and www.stormwaterpa.org/ raingarden. Pick the right spot on your property, create a design using your favorite plants, and start using rainwater to beautify your yard.

Develop an evacuation plan for your family Don't walk in water above your ankles; you can be swept off your feet in as little as 6 inches of rushing water Turn off the electricity and other utilities During heavy rain, Township storm sewers can become blocked with debris causing flooding in the street. In preparation of any rain event, Township crews do attempt to clean storm inlets to make sure they are able to collect water from the street. If you notice debris on top of a storm inlet before or after a storm, contact the Township immediately. If your roadway becomes flooded during a storm, call 911 immediately so emergency personnel can respond to close the road to traffic.

Heather's Recipe Page by Heather Chandler I'm all about fast weeknight dinners. However, I also love a meal that cooks long enough to infuse flavor into the whole dish. So here's one of each! We've got Chicken Stir-fry and Stuffed peppers as your next best dishes!

Chicken Stir-fry- weeknight dinner on the table in 25 minutes Ingredients: 1lb chicken breast (buy it already cut for stir fry or cut into 1"x2" strips) 1/2 c Flour 2 t Olive oil 1 t Sesame oil 1/4c Teriyaki marinade 2T soy sauce 3/4C Chicken stock 1/2 large red pepper & 1/2 large yellow pepper cut to strips (or a whole pepper of one color) 2 heads broccoli 1/2c shredded carrots (optional, adds color & variety of texture) Sesame seeds RICE* see below

Rice - you've got some options here.

White rice, brown rice, rice-a-roni, homemade rice and roni.

Here's the deal: White rice- use Minute Rice Premium, cook as directed Brown rice- I'm the only one in my family that likes brown rice so I buy the individual cups to cook in the microwave Rice-a-roni- This is what my kids love. They have a stir fry flavor that is good.

Rice and roni- When we have guests, I use rice and vermicelli, brown it in butter, add chicken stock, seasoning and BAM! you've made your own Rice and Roni with no preservatives and a heck of a lot less sodium!

Serve the stir fry over the rice of your choice!

Dinner in 25 minutes!

Stuffed Peppers- It's easy but ya gotta give it lots of time to infuse the peppers in the whole dish.

Ingredients: 1lb ground beef 1/2t parsley 1.5c cooked white rice 1t salt 1 can petite diced tomatoes 1/2t pepper 1/2c tomato juice 2 red peppers cut in half and 1/2 onion finely diced cleaned 1/2 red pepper finely diced 1c shredded cheese, cheddar or 1t italian seasoning pepperjack Saute beef until cooked, add all the rest of the ingredients except halved peppers and cheese.

Cook about 4 minutes.

In a baking dish, line up the 4 halved, and cleaned peppers.

Spoon meat mixture into peppers, overfill them.

Add about 3/4c water to the dish.

Cover tightly with foil.

Bake 50 minutes.

Uncover, add cheese, bake another 1015 minutes.

Serve and enjoy!

The peppers are so soft and have infused the meat mixture with their flavor. Of course you can use any color pepper and for presentation use what you have in the kitchen, mix it up!

Toss chicken in flour and add to pan, brown lightly.

Dog Training - Praising Your Dog Why is it so hard for your dog to understand praise including a cue? You will often see directions on the internet with phrases such as, "Every time his rump hits the floor, tell him 'Good sit!'" This is meant to help your dog pair their current act with the word "sit."

As humans, we are able to understand the various ways words can be used. We understand that one word can have many meanings in various situations and that different words can be used to mean the same thing. Unfortunately, your dog is not so lucky when it comes to verbal communication. Dogs are phenomenal at exhibiting and reading body language, but they have a vocabulary of approximately 12-20 vocalizations (depending on which study you read).

This number range is way less than the thousands of words humans have adapted to understanding, and that doesn't even include tone, context, etc.

Once you know and accept this idea, it becomes a little more understandable when your trainer tells you that "down" can only mean one thing and that "put your belly on the floor" can't also mean "don't jump." Other than overusing words and leading to misunderstandings, there is one other instance where people misuse words with their dogs, and this is a big one "sit" followed by "good sit" or some other variation of using a command word in praise.

Why is this such a bad idea? Well, you are going to be spending quite a bit of time teaching your dog a few key words, such as sit, down, stay, etc., and pairing them with specific behaviors. Each time you use a word differently, you are adding a little confusion to the mix and potentially making it harder for your dog to learn the true meanings of the behaviors. We generally refer to this as the power or value of the cue. You want the cue to be very strong and for your dog to understand its meaning clearly.

Here is why that doesn't work: your dog does not understand grammar. Simply stated, you understand that "sit" can be both a verb and noun, as in "sit down" and "the act of sitting." Your dog does not. For your dog, "sit" is technically a discriminative sound or stimulus.

A good example of a discriminative stimulus that may be easier to understand is the sound of a whistle in sporting events. The whistle tells you to start, whether that means dive off of the block in swimming, or to stop due to a penalty, as seen in football. The whistle means only one thing in each sport and is never repeated right after the start or stop to tell the players they did a good job. This is how it feels to your dog.

The sound "sit" means that they are likely to get a reward if they put their bum on the floor. Once their bum is down, repeating the cue with the praise does not tell your dog that they did a good job sitting. That would mean that they understand "good" is being used to describe the act of sitting.

You're essentially wasting the power of the word "sit" by repeating it with the praise.

So what does this mean for praise? You might have come to the conclusion that words matter for your dog. This is absolutely true! So what about the power of your chosen praise word? Well, you give a word power through consistency and clarity by using each word for only one meaning.

associate it with good feeling and drive them to work for the chosen praise word.

To be extremely clear and consistent you can choose a unique word or sound and pair it exclusively with a food reward to help build a stronger drive for reinforcement. This is one reason why many trainers recommend clickers for training.

The clicker is used as a primary reinforcer since it is always paired with food. Even if you accidentally click, you still treat to ensure the clicker is highly reinforcing.

Secondary reinforcers, like praise, are also used once a dog has a good history of reward and is preforming extremely well so that you can fade out the clicker or primary reinforcer. I, for one, tell my dogs they are good and beautiful and the best dogs ever all the time, which is why I specifically do not use the word "good" in training. My primary reinforcer is "yes." Rarely would I say "yes" to a dog in regular every day interactions. I use "rockstar" as my secondary reinforcer, letting my dog know they are on the right track or that a treat will be coming imminently (it's a great way to utilize praise for performance dogs since you are not allowed to treat them during competition).

Hopefully now you understand that words have power and meaning for your dog, just maybe not the meaning you expected. By communicating clearly and consistently with your dog, you can build a stronger relationship and see better training results.

A lot of people choose the word "good." This is a completely fine word to use. However, now that you know words have power, you may notice yourself using "good" to mean multiple things.

"Good" might mean you did a good job and are about to get a treat, or it might mean that they are generally a good dog. Either way, it is hopefully paired with a good reward which can help the pup
