VALLEY FORGE PARK ALLIANCE "Faces at Winter Quarters": Valley Forge, Charles Willson Peale, and the Art of an Encampment Valley Forge is usually remembered in images: barefoot soldiers in the snow, Washington brooding beside his horse, a ragged army transformed by drill. Yet very little contemporary art was actually made in camp. The winter of 177778 left more muster rolls, orders, and diaries than canvases. That is precisely why the few works of art tied directly to Valley Forge, and the many later pictures inspired by it, matter so much. They offer rare faces, gestures, and visual traditions that can be set alongside the Valley Forge Muster Roll's long list of names.

No artist was closer to the Continental Army in this period than Charles Willson Peale. A Maryland-born painter and officer in the Philadelphia militia, he followed the army in the field, painting miniatures and larger

portraits while also serving in uniform. During 1778, Peale spent much of the first six months in camp at Valley Forge, observing, socializing with, and painting officers of the Revolutionary army.

Peale's wartime portrait miniatures were practical and sentimental.

Painted in watercolor on thin ovals of ivory and set in small metal cases, they were portable, quick to execute, and easy to hide from enemy plundering. Over the course of the Revolution, he painted more than 130 miniatures, including likenesses of George Washington, Henry Knox, and Nathanael Greeg.

The Tredyffrin Township Arts Commission invites artists from Chester and Montgomery counties, which together are home to Valley Forge National Historical Park, to submit original artwork for Valley ForgeThen and Now, a juried exhibition celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Continental Army's encampment at Valley Forge and America's 250th Anniversary. The exhibition encourages artists to explore the park's rich history while reflecting on its enduring relevance and the inspiration it continues to provide today.

Artists have long found inspiration in the landscapes, history, and enduring spirit of Valley Forge. Now it's your opportunity to transform that inspiration into something extraordinary and to celebrate the park's enduring spirit and remarkable legacy.

As America commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Valley Forge will also honor the 250th anniversary of the Continental Army's historic encampment of 1777-1778, a defining chapter in our nation's journey toward freedom.

Holiday Season Safety Tips (information from the National Safety Council) Halloween

Kids love the magic of Halloween, but costume and traffic safety are essential for trick-or-treaters. These tips can help make a safe and happy holiday for everyone.

Costume Safety To help ensure adults and children have a safe holiday, follow these Halloween safety tips: • Be sure to choose a costume that won't cause safety hazards; all costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant.

• If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks.

• Opt for nontoxic Halloween makeup over masks, which can obscure vision; always test makeup in a small area first to see if any irritation develops.

• Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation.

When They're on the Prowl Here's a scary statistic: Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Lack of visibility because of low lighting at night also plays a factor in these incidents. Keep these tips in mind when your children are out on Halloween night:

• Agree on a specific time children should return home.

• Teach your children never to enter a stranger's home or car.

• Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends.

• A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds.

• Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home, and take care to avoid any food allergies.

• If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you.

Thanksgiving (information from the National Fire Protection Association)

For most, the kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the holidays. From testing family recipes to decorating cakes and cookies, everyone enjoys being part of the preparations. Keeping fire safety top of mind in the kitchen during this joyous but hectic time is important, especially when there's a lot of activity and people at home.

As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing that large family feast, remember, by following a few simple safety tips you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family safer from fire.

Top Safety Tips • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food.

• Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.

• Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot, and kids should stay three feet away.

Safety Tips for Motorists NSC offers these additional safety tips for parents and anyone who plans to be on the road during trick-or-treat hours: • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.

• Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.

• At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing.

• Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween.

• Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy, or coffee could cause serious burns.

• Keep knives out of reach of children.

• Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer, or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.

Turkey Fryers Turkey fryers that use cooking oil are not safe. These fryers use large amounts of oil at high temperatures, which can cause devastating burns. If you want a fried turkey for your Thanksgiving meal, purchase it from a grocery store, restaurant, or buy a fryer that does not use oil.

• Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.

• Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.

• Keep the floor clear so you don't trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks, or bags.

• Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

Shop Safely This Holiday Season

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reminds consumers to prioritize safety during the holiday season.

Shop only from trusted stores and online retailers to protect your family from common holiday-related hazards. Most unsafe or counterfeit products sold through unverified third-party sites can come from foreign countries such as China and can have devastating and sometimes fatal consequences for families. CPSC urges consumers, especially parents and caregivers shopping for young children, to remain vigilant to prevent toy-related injuries and deaths. In addition, be proactive when choosing holiday decorations to keep family and friends safe.

“American families can keep their celebrations joyful and safe by shopping at trusted retailers, staying current on recalls and using holiday decorations properly. Shoppers should be especially cautious about unsafe or counterfeit products sold from foreign countries, that may not meet U.S. safety standards,” said CPSC Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman. “Don't let dangerous products leave you out in the cold this holiday season: Follow CPSC's tips to shop and decorate safely.”

General shopping • Know your seller. Purchase toys from stores and online retailers you know and trust.

• Be wary of online deals that sound too good to be true, as these toys may be hazardous or counterfeit products.

• When buying secondhand products online, verify recalls at CPSC.gov/recalls before purchasing.

Toys • Follow age guidance and other safety information on toy packaging and choose toys that match each child's interests and abilities.

• Provide safety gear, including helmets for scooters and other riding toys, and ensure children use them each time they ride.

• Keep balls and toys with small parts away from children younger than three and keep deflated balloons away from children younger than eight.

• Check for choking-hazard warnings on toys with small parts, balls, marbles, or balloons on the packaging or on the company's website.

Safe Shopping (information from State Farm) From fistfights to identity theft, shopping at Black Friday sales can come with a few safety risks. If you decide to brave the crowds in person, consider these holiday shopping tips: • Shop with friends or relatives when taking a trip to the store. You may find safety in numbers.

• Keep your purse close to your body and your wallet in an inside coat pocket or a front pants pocket. This may help you avoid thieves who might try to swipe them from your shopping cart or unmonitored back pocket.

• Avoid arguments or fights over an item.

• Refrain from taking your money out until asked and avoid flashing a lot of cash. If possible, opt to use your digital wallet, or credit or debit card for your purchases.

• Slip your more expensive purchases into less noticeable bags, perhaps from your less expensive purchases that day.

• Watch over your items while eating in the food court, as they may be easy to steal when people are distracted. Keep your shopping bags close to you and below your table if possible.

• Try to make purchases on just one credit card. Data breaches may occur, especially during busy shopping seasons, and cyberattacks generally increase during Black Friday sales. Should this happen, you can reduce the risk by not having multiple cards compromised.

• Be aware of exit locations in case an emergency occurs.

With so many people out and about, you may encounter aggressive drivers on the road. Steer clear of contributing to the problem. Remember to drive defensively and be aware of the signs of road rage in other drivers. Parking lots can be dangerous too, so be on guard: • Exercise patience when looking for a parking space. Instead of speeding up to catch that empty (or soon-to-be empty) spot, be cautious of other drivers who may be rushing.

• Take extra precautions when maneuvering your vehicle if you live in an area with winter weather conditions.

• Park your vehicle in a well-lit area as close to the store as you can get. Additionally, opt to shop at earlier times to help you avoid dangers that evening darkness may bring.

• Avoid leaving anything valuable in your car.

• Lock your vehicle before you head inside.

• Help yourself avoid getting lost by making a mental note of where you parked and by snapping a quick picture, if possible.

• Keep your keys in hand when walking back to your vehicle, especially if you're carrying valuable items.

• Look around and under your vehicle as you approach it. If there is a suspicious item on your windshield or your car appears to be tampered with, determine if it is safe to drive to a well-lit location to check it rather than checking right away or call the authorities.

• Store shopping bags out of plain sight, in your trunk if possible.

• Back out slowly while scanning for cars and people.

• Save your receipts and monitor your credit card activity by reviewing your bill immediately or periodically checking your card company's online app.

• Ask for help moving and loading large items if needed.

Safety First:

Protecting Lives on the PA Turnpike At the PA Turnpike Commission, safety is more than a priority, it's the foundation of everything we do. Dedicated employees work in all conditions to maintain and support the roadway, enabling a safer experience for the half a million daily travelers who rely on it. year work zone crash rates fell by more than 25%.

But the PA Turnpike is only as safe as the drivers who use it. Motorists must commit to partnering with us on roadway safety.

Managing speed and eliminating behindthe-wheel distractions protects everyone.

Faster and heavier vehicles need more time and distance to stop. Speeding, inattentiveness, or ignoring precautions reduce the chances of avoiding serious outcomes.

Campaigns like Go Orange and Operation Orange Squeeze aim to change driver behavior, raising awareness and enforcing construction zone speed limits. In the latter, state troopers monitor traffic from construction vehicles, helping to catch speeding drivers in real time.

Recent legislation further strengthened protections. Maintenance vehicles now use green warning lights for better visibility, and the Work Zone Speed Safety Camera program — run in partnership with PennDOT and the Pennsylvania State Police yielded meaningful results. During its fiveyear pilot, speeding dropped by 38%, excessive speeding dropped by 47%, and work zone crash rates were reduced by up to 50% when enforcement vehicles were present.

When it comes to roadway safety, the stakes couldn't be higher. Drivers who don't play by the rules face serious penalties. Reckless driving's impact goes far beyond license points; the consequences are nothing short of life and death for fellow drivers and those working to improve the Turnpike.

Work Zone Safety Matters

Several initiatives and ongoing investments that enhance overall safety, such as roadside assistance offered through the GEICO Safety Patrol and dedicated 24/7 coverage fromPennsylvania State Police Troop T, reflect a strong commitment to reducing risks. Thanks to collaborative efforts across several Turnpike departments along with external partners, average five14 EASTTOWN NEWS · FALL 2026

The Turnpike has also invested in driver education. The New Driver Work Zone Safety Program, an online course developed in collaboration with PennDOT, uses videos, infographics, and real-life scenarios to teach new drivers about work zone laws and safe driving practices. This free course is valuable for new drivers — as well as long-time motorists — and can be found on the Turnpike website.

Responsibility Behind the Wheel

Routine driving habits impact safety, too.

The maximum speed limit is 70 mph. It is especially critical to slow down during severe weather events, such as winter storms, rain, fog, and heavy traffic.

Pennsylvania's Move Over Law, enacted in 2020, requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching emergency response personnel, including tow truck drivers and Turnpike Maintenance teams.

Finally, distracted driving remains a major concern. Paul Miller's Law, which took

effect in June 2025, reinforces the importance of staying focused behind the wheel. It bans handheld mobile device use while driving and penalizes drivers with fines and citations.

Technology plays a key role in keeping drivers informed, helping them plot the safest travel route. The Turnpike deploys advanced traffic management systems and collaborates with the 511PA app to provide real-time updates on incidents, weather and construction. A new texting service allows drivers stopped in unexpected backlogs to receive location-specific updates by texting “info” to 47676.

Bird Briefs- Preparing for Winter Birds The winter of 2026 was a hard winter with much colder temperatures than normal and snow covering the ground for weeks.

How have the birds survived this unusual weather? Most of the birds that visit us during the spring and summer have long since left for parts farther south. They have evolved to migrate because they depend on food sources like insects that just aren't here in the winter. Our winter birds — those that are here all year like cardinals and those that come here from farther north like Juncos — have evolved to be able to tolerate cold weather. Their outer feathers cover downy feathers underneath and, like our down coats, help to keep them warm. At night some birds can go into torpor to reduce energy use and some like the chickadees shiver to keep warm.

Even so, winter is a difficult time for food

and water. You may have witnessed some birds such as woodpeckers, blue jays, chickadees and nuthatches storing food in the nooks and crannies of trees. This is food they will come back to during harsh periods when food is scarce. Amazingly, the chickadees expand their brains so they can remember where they stored all that food.

But what else can we do to help? Feed birds high protein and high fat foods, put a small pond heater in your bird bath for water, leave the seed heads from your native plants for bird food, leave your tree leaves where they've fallen for birds to pick through for insect larvae. Remember to keep your feeders and bird baths clean.

With a little help most of our friends will make it through the next winter in good health.

What Gas Leaf Blowers Really Cost Us BY TRACY VIOLA This will be a three-part series providing information as we rethink gas leaf blowers.

Part One: The Noise You Can't Escape Every fall, spring… and summer… a familiar whine rolls through the neighborhood. Interrupting our conference calls and zoom meetings, waking our children, causing the dog to shake or cat to hide. Gas leaf blowers have become the background soundtrack of suburban life.

The problem is frequency. A two-stroke gas blower produces low-frequency sound waves that travel long distances and pass straight through walls, windows, and closed doors, reaching the person two houses away, sitting in their living room with the windows shut.

The numbers back up what your ears already tell you. The World Health Organization recommends outdoor daytime noise stay at or below 55 decibels.

One field study found the noise coming from a gas leaf blower exceeded the 55 dB threshold as far as 800 feet from the machine. 800 feet away! That's about 50 cars bumper-to-bumper or 2 ½ football fields away from the machine.

This is more than a simple annoyance; residents feel it in their bodies. A survey of Boston-area neighborhoods found most people believed they could neither control the noise nor get away from it, and 79 percent felt no one cared that it bothered them. That helplessness carries a cost.

Low-frequency noise in particular is tied to stress, elevated blood pressure, disrupted sleep, and heart rhythm problems the toll is measurable.

The burden falls hardest on those who cannot walk away from it. Infants and young children are the most vulnerable, since their ears and brains are still developing and that growth is easily disrupted. The American Academy of Pediatrics names leaf blowers as a noise source and warns that even mild hearing loss can set back speech, learning, and sleep. Pets feel it too. Dogs hear a far wider range of frequencies than we do, and lawn equipment is a documented trigger of the noise anxiety that affects an estimated quarter to half of American dogs. The risk rises with proximity and repetition.

The next two parts of this series look at what these machines do to the air you breathe and the environmental impact. In the meantime, consider asking your landscaper to please switch to electric hand-held tools.

WHARTON ESHERICK MUSEUM

THE WHARTON ESHERICK MUSEUM'S 2026 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE: JENNIFER JOHNSON

Throughout this year, we have been delighted to welcome Philadelphia-based artist Jennifer Johnson to our site as the 2026 WEM Artist-in-Residence. A sculptor who works primarily in clay, Johnson creates installations about the production of

history, focusing on how architecture reveals lived experience. Over the course of her residency, Johnson has created countless studies, drawings, and models that respond to her time in Esherick's Studio. She has spent many days here, exploring WEM's architectural site and the unique geometry that is the product of Esherick's highly idiosyncratic artistic practice. Her research process includes drawing, photography, architectural study and modeling, and other forms of close observation that allow her to investigate and expand her understanding of this special place an experience that then extends to all of us as viewers. Pictured here are just a couple of the incredible ceramic tile studies she made in the process of developing her exhibition. The culminating works of this residency will be exhibited in WEM's Visitor Center from October 1 December 30, 2026. These works offer a compelling interpretation and celebration of Esherick's 1926 Studio as we round out a year of programs highlighting the hundredyear anniversary of Esherick breaking ground of this now iconic structure.

Guests may visit exhibitions in the Visitor Center during our current tour days and hours (Wednesday Sunday 10 AM 3 PM) without making reservations. Please note, however, that our Visitor Center shop and exhibition area is a small space, housed in Esherick's Expressionist one-car garage. If you haven't visited before you will definitely want to book a guided tour to enter the Studio, which must be reserved in advance.
