NATURALIST’S NOTES Let the Spring Serenade Begin by Siera Stuart, Naturalist, Zionsville Nature Center Peep, trill, croak, chirp, it’s spring! The long-awaited season is finally here. As you begin to spend more time outdoors enjoying the weather, you may hear the beautiful spring serenade of our local amphibian species emerging from the long winter. Spring brings resources and suitable conditions for the beginning of frog mating season. Just like humans, frogs use different sounds and tones to verbalize their feelings and emotions. Frogs use calls to attract mates, express distress, and protect their territory. Which species are you likely to hear (and maybe even see) this season?

Spring Peeper One of the first frog species to begin calling in the spring are the spring peepers; hence their name. This small frog has smooth skin in shades of gray, brown, tan, or green with a dark x-shape on its back. They typically have dark lines on their legs and between their eyes and are about the size of a paper clip. Spring peepers are known for their high-pitched chirps or peeps.

American Toad This stocky toad species is common throughout Indiana, and you’ve probably encountered one before. Toads love to hang out in backyards, gardens, fields, and wooded areas. American toads have bumpy, warty skin and are typically brown, tan, or rust in color. They breed from late March to June and lay eggs in long stands. When searching for a mate, American Toads make a long, melodic trill that lasts 10–20 seconds.

Cricket Frog Cricket frogs have slightly warty skin with a variety of colors, like gray, green, and tan. They often have a triangle marking between their eyes and prefer shallow wetlands and creeks. I’ve spotted a few at Turkey Foot Park! During the breeding season, males will call in a series of clicks, which sound like two marbles or steel balls being tapped together. They lay hundreds of eggs attached to aquatic vegetation.

Gray Treefrog Gray treefrogs prefer woodland habitat where they use their large toe pads to cling to trees and other surfaces. If you’re lucky, you might spot this species hanging out on your house after a rainy day. Their gray, brown, and green skin helps them camouflage into their surroundings. Their calls are short, loud, and almost flute-like.

If you’re interested in learning more about frog calls and our local species, join us for a Friday night FrogWatch this spring! We’ll search the wetland for frogs and toads and listen to their calls as we contribute to an amazing citizen science project. 7
