Want to stay connected and keep informed of events and meetings that occur in the Town? Whenever news is posted to our Town website, you can receive a copy of the posting in your personal email box.

A full refund will be issued for any program with a note from a doctor indicating an individual cannot participate for medical reasons.

A full refund less a $10.00 processing fee per registration will be issued for non-medical reasons. If registration is paid by check, the town will mail a refund check to the payee.

During each session we will focus on skill development, strategies and field hockey drills and scrimmages.

Care for children and infants; Make good decisions and solve problems; Keep the children you baby-sit and yourself safe; Handle emergencies such as injuries, illnesses and household accidents and much more! Boating safely course (ages 10 and higher) includes topics such as types of boats, lines & knots, safety equipment, trailering, VHF radio, handling, Aids to Navigation, Rules of the Waterway and Weather. Special attention is given to safe operation of Personal Watercraft. A proctored, closed -book examination is given at the end of the course. Passing qualifies boaters for a course certificate recognized by all states including New York and usually qualifies a boater for a discount on marine insurance. A text book/study guide is included with the course fee. The class is for persons 10 and older and the certificate qualifies a young adult to solo operate a powered vessel. However, solo operators of PWC’s must be at least age 14 years in New York State. Recent changes to NY regulations require all power boat operators born after May 1, 1996 to carry a safe boating certificate.

Local businesses are also welcome to contact the service looking for part-time staff. The Youth Employment Service has a growing database of reliable teenagers who are looking for part-time work. 5


Bring a picnic & lawn chair to enjoy these free hour-long concerts with your neighbors and friends. Concerts begin promptly at 7:00 pm. Sponsors are Schenectady County, the Niskayuna Office of Community Programs and the Niskayuna Highway Department. Funding for this project made possible in part by a grant from the Schenectady County Legislature through its County Initiative Program.

Join us this summer on the Town Hall lawn in front of the Gazebo for FREE Yoga Sessions We’ll kick off our free yoga sessions on the Summer Solstice June 21st at 6 pm. Bring your yoga mat (a limited number will be available to borrow) and a bottle of water. Instructors from Niskayuna’s own Power Yoga New York, located next to Hannaford, will lead us through a one hour yoga session, on five Thursdays throughout the summer. All are welcome, each participant can adapt the session to their ability. After yoga, stick around to enjoy the free concert at the gazebo! Mark your calendars for these yoga sessions: June 21st, June 28th, July 12th, July 26th, and August 9th. Yoga will begin at 6 pm, no pre-registration required. 6

Season passes for the pool can be purchased online, by mail or in person at Town Hall (see Registration Instructions on application on the following page). If registering by mail or in-person, please use the Pool Registration Form and be sure to circle names of those purchasing passes. Please note that registration and payment for season passes can only be accepted at Town Hall, not at the Pool or Community Center. Resident guest passes and Pay-As-You-Go passes may be purchased at the pool on the day of your visit. SWIMMING & DIVING INSTRUCTION

(2 WEEKS SESSIONS)

Swim instruction & Water Adjustment for children who will be 5 yrs. by 12/1/18. Lessons will be held at the Niskayuna Town Pool on Aqueduct Rd. There will be three, 2-week sessions. Sessions will be 30 minutes in length. Lessons are not cancelled, nor made up for inclement weather. Instructors will use that lesson for safety procedures. Registration procedure: When registering online, please sign up for your desired time slot. There will be a place to list your child’s approximate level (Water Adjustment – Level 7), however swimmers will be assessed during the first class and be placed in an appropriate level that matches the skills they demonstrate. Some lesson groups may have swimmers with varying levels, but they will be assessed on their individual level. The maximum number of swim lesson students for each time slot is listed. Description of Levels Water Adjustment: Child is ready if he/she agrees to sit on the side of the pool and go in the water with the instructor. Need to separate from parent. Level 1 (Water Exploration): Child is ready if he/she will separate from parent, can sit on the side, put face in the water, can reach for a ring on the steps. Level 2 (Primary Skills): Child is ready if he/she enters the water independently, submerge face for 3 seconds, bob up and down in chest level water, can do a supported kick on front and back. Level 3 (Stroke Readiness): Child is ready if he/she can retrieve dive sticks in chest deep water, float unsupported on back, flutter kick on front/back, and turn over from front to back. Level 4 ** (Stroke Development): Child is ready if he/she can retrieve objects from the bottom with no support, jump into deep water from side of pool, coordinate arm stroke for front crawl with breathing to the side, coordinate back crawl, can do elementary back stroke. Level 5 **(Stroke Refinement): Child is ready if he/she can demonstrate deep water bobbing, do Rotary Breathing in chest-deep water, dive from side of pool from standing positions, swim 10 yards of elementary back-stroke, and breast stroke. DIVING INSTRUCTION: Divers must be able to swim the length of the pool and be willing to dive off the diving board to be eligible. Basic front and back dives off of the diving board will be taught and practiced. All classes will be 30 minutes in length and class size is limited to no more than 7. Swim & Dive Team 2018 NISKAYUNA TOWN POOL SWIM TEAM & DIVE TEAM Niskayuna Wild Turkeys June 18 – August 4, 2018

The Niskayuna Wild Turkeys Swim and Dive Team is for youth with basic swimming and/or diving skills. The teams compete in the Suburban Council League. Meets are held on Tuesday or Thursday evenings beginning in late June and continue through the end of July. The season concludes with the Suburban League Championships.

RETURNING members register at: https://secure.rec1.com/NY/town-of-niskayuna/catalog NEW members must try-out for the team. Swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool and divers are required to have front and back dives in order to be eligible for the team. Try-outs for new members and early season practices start MONDAY, June 18 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Swimmers and divers not qualified for the team will have their registration fee returned. They may want to take advantage of diving and swim instruction offered by the swimming program. Evening practice will run Mon-Thurs; June 18-21; 6:00-7:30pm and regular swim and dive practices begin the morning of Thursday, June 22, and will be held each Monday thru Friday until the end of the season. Practices will run from 7:30 am until about 9:30 am. Specific practice times for age groups will be determined after registration is complete. Parental commitments, meet schedules, and volunteer opportunities will be discussed at Parent Meeting on June 21, at 6:30. We depend on parents to provide assistance at each swim meet and with team activities. Therefore, team participation requires parental commitment. River Road Park Fields

A developmental sports and fitness program that teaches children the basic fundamentals and mechanics of 9 different sports: Baseball, Basketball, Football, Golf, Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Tennis and Volleyball. The program incorporates exercises for gross motor development, hand-eye coordination, cardio-vascular fitness, speed and agility and stretching and muscle tone. The sports will be divided up throughout the week so the children are able to learn and practice the basic fundamentals of each.

This camp will run for 4 days per session for , 1 ½ hrs. per day. This camp is offered for the baseball athlete who loves to play the game. The campers will be encouraged to run their own games, call outs, and settle disputes. Give the kids a break and let them see how it was in the good old days! Coaches will pitch.

camp will be an introduction to the skills and knowledge of field hockey. Players will learn the basics and will practice through individual lessons, group drills and small game situations. If a player is interested in playing goalie, we will have a goalie coach there to teach.

 

Field Games Camp

camp is open to new field hockey players and players planning on trying out for JV and Varsity in the fall. We will focus on more advanced skills and apply our skills into numerous small and large field games. Goalies are welcome to attend and we will provide equipment and a goalie coach.

Each session is tailored to the students that participate, and individual skill development is at a premium. If your student is already versed in the basics, this is a great chance to get some individualized instruction while regularly using the golf range to prepare for the upcoming season. Each session is a fun, judgement-free introduction and education of the game of golf. 3 sessions are held at the Niskayuna Driving Range @ River Rd., 1 session will be held at Schenectady Municipal lower putting green (short-game, date TBA) ***Clubs are provided for all levels of play, if student does not have their own. Due to space constraints, Each session is limited to 14 students per class .

Instructor: Heather Rizzi- Professional Mountain Biker, coach This camp will focus on mini riding drills, bicycle safety, and finding balance. Some campers will work toward removing their current training wheels. Emphasis will be on fun and each camper may have separate goals through the week based on level of riding ability. Stryder bikes welcome! Mini challenges each day with small “rewards”. Campers are required to bring a suitable bike, helmet, water and small snack. Class size limited to 10.

Youth Intro to Mountain Biking     

Instructor: Heather Rizzi- Professional Mountain Biker, coach This program will introduce the basic skills of mountain biking, including balance, and riding on grass, dirt, though mud and over rocks. Children will learn the basic parts of a bicycle, bicycle safety, and the best places to ride, including local trails. The final day will conclude with a mini race and award ceremony. Children are required to bring a suitable bike, helmet, water and small snack. No campers with training wheels please. Class Size limited to 12

Witches and wizards of all ages will make wands, concoct potions, construct snitches, create magical creatures, and play a variety of games including Defeat the Dementors, Bertie Bott’s Beans Bingo, Whomping Willow, Basilisk Tag, Transfiguration, and, of course, Quidditch! Hogwarts Camp is for long-time fans as well as children just discovering the magic of Harry Potter. Although our focus will be on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, we will talk about the other books (no spoilers, promise). Only fun excerpts will be shared in class. Please inform instructor if your child has any food restrictions. Also, please keep snacks peanut-free.

During this week-long event students will explore clay, fabric painting, velour, watercolor, canvas and more . Artists will also have some time to relax and have fun in the sun and of course a little horsing around! Space is limited, so register early! Class is limited to 15 students

Registration: All children who register before the deadline will be placed on a team. Please register by Wednesday, August 1st, either online or in person (you must already have a REC1 account created). Registrations received after August 1st must include a $20 late fee per registration. Players are required to wear shin guards, and are encouraged to bring water to each game and dress for the weather. Cleats, while helpful in soft ground, are not required

Outdoor King & Queen of the Court 4’s Volleyball League (Team of 2 players: Gr 8-12 and/or 1 Adult + 1 junior player)

Thursdays; May 24 - July 19 (8 weeks - no play on 7/5). In case of a rain out, there will not be a make-up. 6:00pm - dusk @ Avon Crest Park $35 per person for current IREVA members. Players that are not IREVA members must purchase an IREVA summer membership for $15 at www.ireva.org as well as pay the $35 per person entry fee in order to play in this league. A signed parent waiver is also required for junior players to be allowed to play with adult players per IREVA's policy. A team of two players required for entry. Please list your partner on the entry form. League Director: Tom Budka Team: A team is made up of two players with at least one junior player. Adults welcome. Please always field a team even if it is one player. IREVA member subs welcome with proof of membership. This helps the ladder league run more smoothly and gets more people playing volleyball. 5 teams per net. If one team does not show then they will be moved down a net the following week. Format: King & Queen Format. You will play one set to 25pts with each team on your net. Each team will get 4 sets with 1 set off when all 5 teams are there. If only 4 teams show then each team will play 6 sets. Scores are recorded after each set. This is a ladder league. If you win your net then your team will move up a net level. If you lose your net then you will move down a level. No open hand tipping or redirected blocks. Indoor rules (hand passing on the 1st ball is okay). Players are expected to help set up and take down the nets each week.

NISKAYUNA “18-HOLE” DISC GOLF COURSE Disc Golf is one of the fastest growing and is one of the best lifetime fitness sports. NISKAYUNA DOG PARK The Niskayuna Dog Park is located in Blatnick Park. It is open from dawn until dusk 7 days a week, year round and is limited to Niskayuna residents. Niskayuna dog park permits are required for all dogs who use the dog park, and may be purchased at the Town Clerk’s office at Niskayuna Town Hall for $30 per year/$15 per year for senior citizens. Owners must show proof of Niskayuna residency and dogs must be licensed and have proof of current rabies and distemper vaccinations. There is a septic system for waste. Owners must pick up after their pets! No waste containers or plastic bags allowed. Use reusable provided scoopers. River Road Park

The Niskayuna Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Niskayuna Highway Department, and under the auspices of the Niskayuna Town Board, has a variety of pavilions available to individuals or groups for rental. Register online at www.niskayuna.org to reserve a park pavilion. If you do not already have an account with the Niskayuna/REC1 website, you will need to create one. Once on the REC1 website, click on "Facility Rentals" then click on the park you are interested in renting.

 

All parks are open from 1/2 hour after sunrise to 1/2 hour before sunset.  Pavilions can only be rented by Town of Niskayuna residents.  Park rules are conspicuously posted.  Please pick up after your dog.  Carry in-carry out trash policy must be followed. Individual residents who rent a pavilion may serve alcohol with proof of at least $500,000 worth of liability insurance on homeowner policy of renter. Groups who hire an outside vendor such as a caterer or entertainment must provide proof of at least $1,000,000 worth of liability insurance by the vendor.  All state and local laws apply.  All reservations require a refundable $200 security deposit in addition to the park reservation fee.  Please select date carefully; reservation fee is non-refundable.  An additional reservation fee will be charged if rental date is changed.  Reservations for rental dates are available no more than 75 days before rental date.  Email Julie Lohre with any addition questions not answered in this booklet or on the Town website at jlohre@niskayuna.org 20
