Editor’s Letter

February is the month when we start seeing (hopefully!) the beginnings of spring - the snowdrops are starting to appear and new born lambs are arriving. It’s also a good time to put up a nesting box for the birds, and our article on page 56 gives some useful tips on this. If you are thinking of making some changes to your home this year, don’t forget our Building & Home Improvement Section pages pages 72-81 for local builders, carpenters, decorators, doors, electricians, plasterers, plumbers and roofers etc. Also, in this edition, we a look at putting together the perfect bedroom.

Pancake Day on the 17th is a good way to keep the kids happy at half term - why not try the recipe on page 36. Please continue to send in your local news and articles - in this issue you can read all about the Aero Badminton Club. Until next time . . .

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world! It takes place every August for three weeks in Edinburgh, where thousands of performers with a story to tell take to hundreds of stages all over the city to present shows. We in ABOP’s (Calne) Young Actors Company would like to be part of this amazing theatrical event by taking our 2014 show ‘Spring Awakening’ to Edinburgh in August 2015. Twenty of us (aged 12-18yrs) from Calne and the local area will travel to, stay and perform daily in Edinburgh for the last two weeks of the festival, performing this amazing musical at a central venue to an international audience. But with transportation, accommodation, venue hire, performance license etc. this is an expensive task and so we are now starting our fundraising campaign! The professional actors in ABOP and some community actors are helping us with a number of fundraising events too… but ‘Spring to Edinburgh ... £30K in 30 days’ is our biggest challenge. We would love it if you could become part of this journey with us and find it in your hearts to donate. With a donation of £10 from 3000 people we can make our theatrical dream come true. You can donate here: www.anythingbutordinary-productions.com/ edinburgh-fringe-project.php Of course we don’t expect your donation for free, that just wouldn’t be fair! We will be performing in Calne throughout the year; in cafes, shops…even outside. We can even come to your business/company if you prefer to donate a larger amount as a group. There will also be a number of local performances of ‘Spring Awakening’ in July at seriously discounted ticket prices for Sponsors. If you would like to find out more you can email us at infoabop@btinternet.com and your messages will be passed onto us via our teaching staff. Or you can read about the project and our reviews on the ABOP website: www.anythingbutordinary-productions.com Thank you from the bottom of our theatrical hearts The Fundraising Team

New in 2015: Walking Football! The FA Mars Just Play! football programme gives the casual footballer a chance to just turn up to a venue and play football. The Just Play Walking Football programme is informal football at its best – it’s about turning up for an hour of exercise, a bit of fun and aims to help you start or maintain an active lifestyle. It’s a slow paced version of the beautiful game which is non contact and suitable for people who may have mobility, fitness or health problems which prevent them from playing a faster paced game. Frankly, it’s everything you know and love about football, with all the skill and enjoyment, but without the fear of being too slow or too old. Sessions are being provided in Chippenham (outdoors, Stanley Park Sports Ground, Fridays, 7.30pm), Trowbridge (indoors, Trowbridge Sports Centre, Sundays, 11am) and Market Lavington (indoors, Lavington School, every other Tuesday, 8.30pm).We provide the balls, venue and support. You’ve just got to turn up! School Readiness Currently the papers and news seem to be full of guidance and debate about “school readiness”. Lecturer and Early Years mentor, Lucy Waterman, asks one outstanding local Preschool – Rub-A-Dub at Derry Hill - how they help children to be ready for their move into “big school”. What does ‘school readiness’ mean at Rub-A-Dub? We believe that school readiness is about being confident to keep trying and have a go at new things; it’s about being happy to leave your mummy or daddy, to rush into school or other new places with a feeling of excitement at what the day might hold and a head full of new ideas to try out. We want to develop children who are motivated, curious and excited learners. What skills do you help children develop? We believe it’s about being able to put your coat on by yourself and not get worried when you have to move to another place to do PE, or to have lunch; and it means being strong enough to try again when things don’t work out; it’s about ‘having another go’, or asking for help from others if you need it, without feeling afraid or thinking you’ve failed. How do you do this? At Rub a Dub we know it is important to help children to get ready for school in a fun and active way; it is a fundamental part of the work we do in helping your child to flourish and reach his or her full potential. However, we also know that helping your child to be ready for school doesn’t mean pushing them on to the next stage. After all, learning is not a race; it’s a wonderful journey of discovery from the beginning of your child’s life right through to adulthood and beyond. That’s why we have a special session every Friday morning just to help your “Rising Stars” as they get ready for school in September. What is so special about the Rising Stars? Here we have time for children to practise getting changed for PE, which can be a big challenge to children who have never done this. We also know that each child needs to be ready for some of the more formal learning that will come when they go to school; such as reading books, writing and early mathematics. That’s why we are very careful to use the most current thinking and research about teaching very young 22

The Town Crier Magazine | FEBRUARY 2015

children. We employ the services of an Early Years Professional to work closely with our team to ensure every child has the essential skills in place to enable them to move onto some of the trickier stuff when they go to school. All of this involves lots of play and fun, and close support from the warm and caring staff team. And our Rising Stars get to do some extra-special things on a Friday, like going to the local post office or visiting the residents in the Kingston House care home. In this way we really help children understand and value aspects of community life, and become thoughtful and caring members of the community – even when they are young. How do you know the Rising Stars group helps with getting children ready for school? We were rated OUTSTANDING in all areas in 2010 by the education inspectors, Ofsted. They spoke very highly of our provision, noting that “children’s learning is very well supported through the provision of an excellent range of toys and resources, a well-planned, interesting environment and interaction with knowledgeable and skilful staff.” They also outlined how we match teaching to the children’s needs: “There is an exemplary balance of adult-led and child- initiated activities. Children … are polite and considerate with each other and receive praise and encouragement for their achievements.” We are delighted that Ofsted identified the fact that our “Children are making excellent progress in all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.” How can parents find out more? We are holding an Open Day during our Rising Stars session on Friday 27th February from 10–11.30am. To discuss availability and sessions please email: rubadubpreschoolenquiries@gmail.com or ring 07894 073865 to leave a message.

New Look Bedroom

Let yourself go in the bedroom! by Nikki Seal, Real Paintbox Company Bedrooms: Your private space, your place to be. Somewhere to escape from the stresses of the day. Unwind. Relax. Switch off. Re-energise. Immerse yourself in luxury. Pamper your senses and dream your dreams. The one place where you can be yourself and not worry about public opinion. So, don’t be shy. In the words of Cyndi Lauper – don’t be afraid to let them show, your true colours, your true colours – they’re beautiful like rainbows … Don’t play safe and settle for 50 shades of pale. This is your chance. Now is the time. Let go and Live the Dream. Be bold. Be brave. Start by Putting on the Style: What style fills you with joy and makes you feel comfortable. With clever use of colour and pattern, any style can be created. All you have to do is close your eyes and let your imagination run away with you. Imagine you have just been taken on your ideal

mini break – what does the bedroom look like? Is it Boutique Luxury, Nostalgic Vintage, Romantic Country, Urban Chic, Cosy Retreat, Rich Opulence or Classically Simple. Imagine the perfect style for you – the sky’s the limit – then go for it. Creating the Look: Bedding: A great starting point for your dream scheme. There are so many beautiful bedding sets on the market these days, to suit all styles, so go online and find the one that fits. Then dress the bed with cushions and a throw for added drama and effect. Headboards: Never underestimate the power of the headboard to make a bedroom look complete. If your headboard is looking a little tired and not in keeping with the look you are wanting to create, transform it. With a little bit of chalk paint and some wax it can look a million dollars. To experiment with ways to achieve Photo: Akzo Nobel

A bit on the side: Bedside cabinets are a great example of form and function. They perform a necessary function by holding all the essentials close to hand, like a lamp, a book, a glass of water. If they’re looking a little tired or not in keeping, again, transform them with a little chalk paint and wax. Then dress them well, to bring form to your look, by adding a new lamp and a couple of pieces that embrace your style – whether that’s a photo frame, a vase and flower or an ornament.

Give your Walls the WOW factor: Complete the look with the perfect wall colours. Choose your main colour, using your bed linen as inspiration, then consider a darker shade of the same colour or a stunning complementary, feature colour for the main (bed head) wall. Equally, wallpaper on the main wall can be a great way to add depth and texture to the scheme. If you’re having difficulty finding the perfect colour or wallpaper, bring one of your pillowcases along to our paint shop, where you will be able to try out the fabric against the hundreds of real paint samples that we have on display. This is a really quick, easy way to explore lots of colour possibilities and find the perfect paint colour quickly and easily. Alternatively, book a colour visit – we can come out to your home with hundreds of real paint colour samples for you to try out IN THE ROOM. New Look Bedroom

The bedroom of our dreams Words and photos by Carron Keohane, notsoshabbyinteriors.co.uk

F

OR ME, MY BEDROOM IS a sanctuary - my favourite room of the house. If asked why, I simply respond … “a bedroom is like a husband - it’s the last thing you see at night and the first thing you see in the morning” So if we can put so much effort into finding our perfect partner, then why shouldn’t we put as much effort into designing our perfect bedroom? After all it is the room to which we can escape, wind down and relax after a busy day and it is generally the room that says more than any other about our characters. Bedrooms very often tell the story of our lives; this

might be through pictures of family or friends, or trinkets collected from those magical adventures that you never want to forget. This is why; when finally I was at the decoration stage of our four year house restoration and extension project, any thoughts that fell outside the category of ‘my bedroom’ were firmly shoved aside and promptly forgotten about. I lived, breathed and talked bedrooms. My Country Homes and Interiors Magazine became my Bible, and my husband’s budgeting became a constant source of irritation!

question; what does this design say about me? I am a huge fan of the popular ‘vintage floral’ trend. I run my own shabby chic interiors business www. notsoshabbyinteriors.co.uk so I was able to use a lot of my own restored and painted furniture, handmade cushions and home accessories, but I also spent many an hour scouring the shops for just the right bedding, rugs and paint shades. After many weeks of internet research and careful (if somewhat reluctant) analysis of prices, my bedroom dream finally began to take shape.

When choosing a design for your bedroom it is important to ask the

I used the same colour for a fitted cupboard and shelf unit that he also built to fit into the slope of the attic ceiling. Reluctantly relinquishing creative control in my teenage girl’s rooms was perhaps one of the biggest struggles I faced throughout our entire building project; this coming from the woman who lived with no heating and, for a ridiculously

long time, no bathroom walls. I found myself hovering over paint charts with the girls, fidgeting and interjecting until I was unceremoniously and in my opinion unnecessarily told to butt out! Over the course of a couple of weeks I was sent off to buy paint samples and to collect material swatches. Quite swiftly decisions were made and I was informed work could commence; I was also told that any opinions I might have should be kept strictly to myself! I reasoned that I owed the girls this much for making them live in what only can be described as a bombsite for the previous 4 years! continues overleaf

Clearly my love of all things vintage has rubbed off on Sophie my eldest daughter, as she chose a warm cream paint colour for the walls and brought it to life with a flurry of floral accessories and bedding, to form what can only be described as a shrine to ‘Cath Kidston’. Delusions of grandeur perhaps spring to mind when admiring her lighting choice; but apparently her vaulted ceiling was in her words “positively crying out for a magnificent chandelier!” I have to admit my expectations for what sort of scheme Kate, my youngest daughter, would choose were pretty low, bearing in mind to date she had only ever shown a preference for Barbie pink and garish! However, I am both surprised and delighted with the result. We painted the walls in a striking shade

of heather and used a gorgeous duck egg colour to transform some furniture and the large free standing mirror. A visit to Dunelm supplied us with the vintage looking gold bedding and curtains and a stopover at Laura Ashley brought us some cushions and a quilt. Gold photo frames were purchased, distressed and aged and filled with sepia toned photographs making a vintage yet stylish form of wall decoration. Kate was also keen to join the ‘chandelier club’ so we trawled the internet and managed to find a majestic gold beauty that illuminates the high ceiling and ties the whole scheme together perfectly. Having read this article, I’m sure you will now agree that choosing a style for your bedroom is just as individual and important a choice as picking a good husband. My girls and I were lucky… not only did we all end up with the bedroom of our dreams, but I have ended up with a man who knows only too well when to sit back, shut up and let me get on with it!

Lemon Almond Cake Yummy...this one’s a family favourite.

Serves: 8

Method

Preparation time: 30 minutes

Sieve the flour with the baking powder and mix in the ground almonds. Grate the lemon zest and add this to the mix too.

Cooking Time: 45 minutes

Beat the eggs lightly then add to the creamed butter and sugar, a little at a time. Don’t worry if it curdles a little.

Ingredients 200g unsalted butter 200g Demerara sugar 90g plain flour 90g ground almonds Half tsp baking powder Zest of 1 large, unwaxed lemon 4 large eggs

Gently fold in the flour, almonds and baking powder with a large metal spoon. Dollop the cake mixture into the lined tin. Bake for 45 minutes until golden. To test it, insert a metal skewer. If the skewer comes out clean, the cake is cooked. If not, the cake needs a few minutes more. Remove from the oven.

SYRUP

Set oven to 160C / Gas Mark 3

For the syrup, stir the Demerara sugar into the lemon juice . . . it will only partially dissolve, but there is no need to heat it. Prick the top of the cake with the skewer or a sharp knife and spoon the syrup over the cake. Leave to cool.

Line a loaf tin (25cm x 11cm x 7cm) with greaseproof paper.

Try this cake with a scoop of crème fraîche and some fruit compote.

2tbsps Demerara sugar Juice 1 large unwaxed lemon

Food & Drink

Pancake Day How do you eat yours?

Over the years I’ve tried my pancakes with fruit, maple syrup, and a variety of savoury fillings, but I keep coming back to fresh lemon juice and a sprinkling of sugar...irresistible. Here is my own recipe for perfect pancakes.

Ingredients

115g (4oz) plain flour Pinch salt 1 large egg 285ml (half a pint of milk) 115g (4oz) butter, melted Juice from 2 lemons, strained Caster or Demerara sugar to taste. To make the batter: sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Beat in the egg and a little of the milk until smooth. Gradually beat in the remaining milk and add 4 tablespoons of the melted butter. Cover the bowl and leave to stand for one hour. In a small non-stick frying pan heat some of the butter until sizzling, but taking care not to let it burn. Pour enough batter into the pan to coat the base evenly. Cook over a moderate heat until the pancake is light golden brown underneath and looks dry on top. Flip over (try to do this with style!) and cook the other side until golden. Continue until all the batter is used. The recipe should make 10-12 pancakes. You can keep the pancakes warm in the oven (Gas mark 1 / 140C) until they are all cooked, but in our house they’re barely out the frying pan before they’re scoffed. Serve with the lemon juice and sugar – Enjoy!

Playing Fair by Susan Brookes-Morris

What is Fairtrade Fortnight and why do we need it?

F

AIRTRADE FORTNIGHT TAKES place this year between 23 February and 8 March 2015, and aims to continue to raise awareness and change behaviour around this important topic. Research shows that whilst 78% of the UK population recognise the Fairtrade Mark, over 50% still do not actively choose Fairtrade products. Fairtrade is about getting better prices, working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. It’s about supporting the development of thriving farming and worker communities, so that they have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work. It is now possible to buy around over 4,500 products officially branded Fairtrade including: Tea, Coffee, Bananas, Chocolate, Gold, Flowers, Cotton and Sugar. Sadly however, only 1.2% of cocoa and 10% of tea globally are traded on Fairtrade terms. Did you check the packaging for the Fairtrade logo when you last bought some tea? 38

The Fairtrade mark means that the Fairtrade ingredients in the product have been produced by small scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet social, environmental and economic Fairtrade standards. These standards help to protect workers’ rights and environment. They also ensure payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price for the commodity, and an additional Fairtrade Premium which is invested into the business or community projects. Small scale farmers and workers are amongst the most marginalized globally, and Fairtrade helps them through trade, not aid, providing stable income to help them plan. Fairtrade only certifies small scale farmer organisations for products such as cocoa, cotton and rice, but does certify plantations with larger numbers of employees for goods such as tea, bananas and flowers. The standards required for larger organisations include allowing them freedom of association and collective bargaining, and prevention of discrimination and child labour.

The Town Crier Magazine | FEBRUARY 2015

The producers decide how the Fairtrade premium is invested. Often this will be in schools, transport, health care and better business equipment and practices. There are over 1.4 million farmers and workers in 1,140 producer organisations within the Fairtrade System. These are across 74 different countries and four continents. Fairtrade.org.uk would love people to get involved during Fairtrade fortnight. Here are some suggested activities to increase awareness and raise money. Create a Fairtrade Trail around your local area highlighting those selling Fairtrade products. Build a model of something funded from Fairtrade premium such as a school or health centre, and display this in a prominent place to make it a talking point. Have some fun creating a special event. This could be a film evening showing the Fairtrade film, or something more elaborate such as a Come Dine With Me experience. Tasting events featuring Fairtrade produce are also popular.

♥ Valentine’s Day

Gifts that say ‘I Love You.’ What to buy the one you love on Valentine’s Day.

T

HE YEAR WAS 1969 AND THEY WERE hopelessly in love. As two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and arguably the most famous couple in the world, Richard Burton decided to prove his undying passion for his wife Elizabeth Taylor by purchasing a huge 69.42 carat pear shaped diamond with a £1m price tag to match. Though this extravagant act hit the headlines, it is by no means unique. In 1648 emperor Shah Juhan built the Taj Mahal, the “crown of palaces”, in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. At the other end of the spectrum, the less rich and famous have earned themselves a place on the Internet if not in the history books, by presenting their loved ones with less salubrious offerings. An empty suitcase, with not a hint of surprise tickets to a romantic destination, a deep fat fryer with left over Christmas chocolate hidden inside, and divorce papers delivered while dining out, are just a sample of these gift-giving gaffes. With Valentine’s Day almost upon us, you may be wondering what to buy your loved one. Apart from the usual flowers, chocolates and jewellery, is there anything else out there a little more unusual that will keep you in their good books, whilst avoiding one of ‘those’ looks?

If adrenalin rushes are your lover’s thing, why not consider indoor sky diving, flying lessons, dumper truck racing, and a super car thrill experience where you get to drive a real sports car? Cricket, snooker and other sports coaching lessons can also be purchased for around £150 a time. If pampering is more palatable, how about a spa package, or a make-over followed by a photo shoot, or for around £25 a “design your own perfume” set? If food is the way to a man’s heart, then chocolate is definitely the entry to a woman’s! For something different, why not get her a pizza made entirely of chocolate, or chocolate-shaped spoons that melt in hot milk making a deliciously smooth drink? Finally, what could be more romantic than naming a star after your loved one, or giving them the chance to name one themselves? You can purchase this privilege for around £20. If you haven’t found an idea here to suit your taste or your pocket, try searching some for yourself. The following websites are a good place to start:

If togetherness is your thing, you can buy a pair of love gloves for around £20, but if you fancy something more thrilling, how about a lovers leap bungee jump at around £120? That will certainly add some excitement to a relationship!

Don’t Worry, Be Happy When the weather is bleak and grey, how can we lift our mood? By Sarah Davey Exercise - When we exercise our brain releases feelgood endorphins, making us happier. Even a short 5 minute stroll round the block can boost your mood. Think how you might add just a little more movement into your daily life: Maybe a few morning yoga poses, or an evening walk.

Be part of a community - Research shows that people involved in their community are happier. Communities foster emotional support and a connection with others, which leads to a greater sense of well-being. The community could be a group of like-minded people such as a choir, or art-group.

Get Immersed - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, renowned psychologist found that immersing ourselves in an activity we love, which also requires skill, makes us happy. Try reading, playing the guitar, writing a blog, or cooking, immerse yourself in a hobby and your mood will brighten. Laugh - Laughter changes the energy of a situation immediately and lightens our mood. Try watching a DVD of your favourite comedian. Better still, visit a comedy club and give yourself permission to laughout-loud. Meditate - Scientific studies have proved that emotions, and happiness in particular, can be trained. Even a few minutes of meditation per day have a positive impact our brain and sense of well-being. 44

Sprains and Strains By Louise Addison

A sprain is an injury to a ligament (the tissue that connects two or more bones together). In a sprain, one or more ligaments is stretched or torn. A strain is an injury to a muscle or a tendon (tissue that connects muscle to bone). In a strain, a muscle or tendon is stretched or torn.

Compress: Compress or bandage the injured area to limit any swelling and movement that could damage it further. Simple elastic bandage or elasticated tubular bandages and advice are available from a pharmacy. Remove the bandage before you go to sleep.

Treatments for sprains and strains are the same. Think PRICE.

Elevate: Raise and support the injured joint on a pillow to help reduce swelling.

Protection: Protect the injured area from further injury by using a support or sturdy lace-up shoes

And avoid HARM

Rest: Rest the injured joint or muscle. Avoid activity for the first 48 to 72 hours after injuring yourself. Ice: For the first 48 to 72 hours after the injury, apply ice wrapped in a damp towel to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours during the day. Do not allow the ice to touch your skin directly, because it could cause a cold burn.

48

The Town Crier Magazine | FEBRUARY 2015

Heat: Hot baths, saunas or heat packs. Alcohol: May increase bleeding and swelling, and hinder healing. Running: Or any exercise that could cause more damage. Massage: May increase bleeding and swelling.

Health Mattters

Kung Hei Fat Choy! T

HE CHINESE NEW YEAR FALLS ON 19th FEBRUARY and according to the Chinese Zodiac this is the year of the Goat. Doing a little bit of research into this I have learned that the year of the Goat brings about good fortune and is a symbol of calm and tranquillity. I am not an expert on these things of course, I barely know how to pronounce the title of this article, which I have been reliably informed means ‘congratulations and best wishes for a prosperous New Year’. One thing I am an expert (ish) on is Goats, mind you, having been brought up with them, not in a herd I hasten to add but in my parent’s smallholding. I remember them being particularly hungry animals, always nibbling at my clothes or eating their way through fences. They had a particular penchant for dungarees, if I recall, but it was the Seventies… and I was four. Things were certainly stress free then. After the turbulence of 2014 I think those of us working within the NHS would welcome calmer times ahead, so I am looking forward to the promise the Year of the Goat brings with optimism. I recently heard the term ‘time starved’ being used to explain how most people nowadays feel that there is not enough time in the day to get everything done. I am certainly guilty of filling my diary to the brim and burning the candle at both ends. Lucky enough to live in the same town I work in; I have more time than those who endure the daily commute. I can normally arrange all the ‘essential’ appointments doctor/dentist/hairdresser (ahem) around my working week and even find the time to fit in some ‘essential’ shoe shopping too. But in this day and age a short commute is often a luxury which makes it difficult to fit in ‘essential’ appointments. In a move to improve quality of access to GP services and make sure that healthcare can fit in with the everyday lives of patients, a National change was implemented on the 5th of January, giving patient’s more flexibility in their choice of GP Surgery to provide their routine care. Participating GP surgeries can now register patients who live outside of their practice boundaries under a special ‘Out of Area’ registration. This gives patients the option of registering with the GP Surgery most convenient for them, i.e nearer to your place of work or closer to children’s schools. However, it is important to note that this type of registration means that your GP will only be responsible for delivering a service to meet your routine care needs. Emergency care, such as home visits, will be co-ordinated by NHS England via participating 50

The Town Crier Magazine | FEBRUARY 2015

surgeries or healthcare providers closer to your home. It’s the choice of individual GP Surgeries if they wish to participate in accepting out of area registrations and the Practice may decide that they have no capacity at the time or that it is not clinically appropriate or practical for you to be registered away from home. If you are moving outside of your existing GP Practice’s boundary and wish to remain as a patient you will need to re-register as an Out of Area patient but all the same rules apply and you may still be declined registration. If your registration is not accepted the Practice will write to you and let you know why they have come to that decision. Being an ‘Out of Area’ patient is not the right choice for everyone. For example if you have a long term illness which could require emergency or domiciliary care, now or in the future, you may decide that it is better to stay registered with your local Surgery so that all your care needs can be coordinated by your usual GP. Your Surgery also has the right to ask you to register with a Practice closer to home if it is considered clinically appropriate. In addition, for routine appointments you will be expected to travel to your chosen GP Surgery, so this could potentially be a long commute for a ten minute appointment if your Practice is located some distance from your home address. Travel costs should also be taken into consideration. As with most things, it is advisable to do your homework if you are looking to register with a new Surgery. The NHS Choices website www. nhs.uk provides lots of advice on choosing the right GP Surgery for you, such as how Practices are performing against National targets, their opening hours and the services available. It is also worthwhile visiting the Practice’s website and perhaps getting the opinion of colleagues or friends for their recommendations. I hope these changes will help us all to be less time starved over the course of 2015 and perhaps the Year of the Goat will assist somewhat as well. Personally, I feel that goats and Practice Managers have much in common - a resilient bunch, able to survive inclement weather with the capability to make a meal out of scant fodder! Now where is that biscuit tin?

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Gargoylz: Get up to Mischief

...............................................................................................

...........................................

Rachel Joyce

Retirement is meant to be relaxing, isn’t it? You do what you love doing, and enjoy yourself. But what if you suddenly receive a letter out of the blue? A woman who worked in your office many years ago has cancer and is dying. She just wants you to know. This touches you for reasons you can’t quite explain, so you write her a note to say that you are sorry to hear that. Putting on your coat and your yacht shoes you leave with the note. Your destination? The post box. Just as far as the end of the road. And so starts Harold Fry’s extraordinary journey: 627 miles in 87 days. With no plan, other than to reach Queenie, he sets off on a journey of faith. Scribbling on the note he tells her to wait for him. This debut novel from radio and TV writer, Rachel Joyce, will take you on a gentle journey with Harold and the various people he meets along the way. Totally unprepared for what he will encounter, his faith in positive thinking keeps him going as he learns more about his life and relationships with his wife and son.

Burchett and Vogler

If you thought your time at primary school was exciting, then you have nothing on nine-yearold Max and his best friend Ben. Their school is next to an old church and to their delight, they discover that the stone figures on the church come to life. In this, the second book in the series, Toby, a mischievous young gargoyle with the ability to fly, manages to create havoc at the school, much to the disgust of Mrs Hogsbottom who, after an incident with a skateboard, reminds pupils of school rule number 27: the head teacher must not be run over without permission. Max spends most of his time trying to keep Toby and the other gargoylz under control: not easy when they can make themselves invisible and so avoid all the blame! When he suggests that Toby runs a bath to clean himself up after eating a packet of chocolate biscuits, it’s not difficult to imagine the rather wet chaos that ensues. Written for readers age 6+, with an interactive website to explore the stories and characters more, this is sure to keep both boys and girls engrossed, with the added bonus of many more books to enjoy. Azara’s Agouti Arrivals! Cotswold Wildlife Park celebrates the birth of two Azara’s Agoutis - one of the Park’s shyest species Jamie Craig, Curator of Cotswold Wildlife Park, said: “Our Agouti family continues to thrive in the exhibit they share with our group of Squirrel Monkeys. The Monkeys can be wasteful feeders and the two new baby Agouti have already learned from their parents that loitering under the trees can provide a little extra food from above!”

rump is much longer than the hair on the rest of their bodies. When threatened, they can actually hold it erect much like a Porcupine does with its quills.

Azara’s Agoutis (Dasyprocta azarae) are named after the 18th century Spanish naturalist, Félix de Azara, who discovered the mammals. The scientific name “Dasyprocta” means hairy rectum. The hair on their

Agoutis have such a great sense of hearing that they can hear fruit hit the forest floor. They also boast an exceptional sense of smell, hiding any extra food that they may have and later locating it with their nose.

To make an escape against predators such as Jaguars and Ocelots, this Neotropical rodent can jump up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) straight up in the air from a standing position. They are one of the largest wild rodents of the Americas.

Feather Their Nest By Susan Brookes-Morris

Here are some handy hints for siting your nest boxes: • Do not put nest boxes of the same type close to each other • Open fronted boxes should be hidden from view • Make sure cats cannot get into the boxes • Consider putting a metal plate around the hole to deter squirrels • Boxes should be sheltered from the weather • Keep the boxes away from bird feeders • Place between 1 and 5 metres high • Use screws that will not rust

ID you know that there is a National Nest Box Week? This year it takes place from 14th-21st February. The event is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology. The idea started in 1997 following fears about birds losing their natural nest sites because of lots of trees being cut down, old buildings disappearing, gardens being ‘tidied’ and old houses being repaired. The Trust wants us to put up nest boxes so that we can protect the wildlife we have, and encourage even more birds to come into our gardens. It is estimated that there are now over 5 million nest boxes in the UK designed to help everything from Robins to Owls. Different types of nesting box attract different birds. So in a box with small holes, you might get Blue Tit’s, Nuthatches, Redstarts or House Sparrows. Boxes with larger holes may encourage Starlings, Spotted Woodpeckers and perhaps even Little Owls; and in very big boxes you might see Kestrels, Jackdaws, Stock Doves and Tawny Owls. There are also open fronted boxes which appeal to Robins, Spotted Flycatcher and Pied Wagtails. Imagine how lovely it would be to watch the birds going in and out of your boxes and hopefully some young ones hatching there. If you are careful and quiet, you can even peek inside the box from time to time when the eggs are incubating, as most birds will sit tight. If you want to count the eggs, observe in the early morning and wait until the female bird flies off for a quick meal.

You can choose to buy some nest boxes from your local pet store or garden centre, or make some. Instructions for building boxes are available on many internet sites including http://www.bto.org/ the British Trust for Ornithology site. February is an ideal time to put boxes up, because pairs of small birds prosper towards the end of the month. You are also helping however if you put boxes up at any time of year, although 1 August to the 31 January is the time under Bird Protection Law when nests can be cleaned out, and any dead eggs found destroyed.

GOOD VIBRATIONS with Brian Justice

Dylan goes all Frank Sinatra This month sees the release of a new Bob Dylan album with a difference. Normally a new Dylan release comprises of a self penned work with the odd cover version. Shadows in the Night, out on Columbia Records, consists of traditional pop standards made famous by ol’ blue eyes – Frank Sinatra. Dylan cherry-picked 10 songs for the CD . This will be his 36th studio set and is his first new album since Tempest which came out in 2012. Last year one of the album tracks Full Moon And Empty Arms was made available for download sparking rumours of a possible covers album. Well here we are. Speaking of the release Dylan has said, “It was a real privilege to make this album. I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time but was never brave enough to approach 30-piece complicated arrangements and refine them down for a 5-piece band. That’s the key to all these performances. We knew these songs extremely well.

It was all done live. Maybe one or two takes. No overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones. No separate tracking, and, for the most part, mixed as it was recorded. I don’t see myself as covering these songs in any way. They’ve been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What me and my band are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.”

Among the classics on the album are Autumn Leaves, Where Are You?, That Lucky Old Sun and The Night We Called It A Day. The album was produced by Dylan under his often used pseudonym Jack Frost. “Shadows In The Night” is out now on Columbia Records.

Jeff Beck - A Man For All Seasons Jeff Beck is, without question one of the world’s greatest guitar players. Whether playing pop, blues, jazz or rock his talent across a variety of genres is unmatched. He has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. His life in music is the subject of a new DVD documentary entitled Jeff Beck-A Man For All Seasons: In The 1960’s. This film traces Beck’s music and career throughout that decade - his formative influences (Les Paul) and early groups (The Rumbles, The Tridents) his work with The Yardbirds (to replace Eric Clapton on the recommendation of Jimmy Page), his brief ‘pop’ career (Hi Ho Silver Lining), and his work with Jeff Beck Group with the albums Truth and Beck –Ola (with among others Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood). The film contains studio footage, interviews, contributions as well as new interviews with many influential figures of the 1960s including Giorgio Gomelsky (record label owner and manager), fellow Yardbirds, Jim McCarty & Chris Dreja and legendary impresario Simon Napier Bell. Jeff Beck - A Man For All Seasons is released on Sexy Intellectual. DVD 129 mins.

Motoring Mayhem I

T always takes me ages to buy any significant piece of equipment for the house or toy for myself. I can spend hours often weeks poring over reviews and studying specifications of before I purchase anything be it camera, computer, washing machine or more recently a sports car. Since my body will no longer let me ride motorcycles for any distance there has been a gap in my life and as I have never owned a proper sports car or convertible I thought I would treat myself to a retirement present. The problem for me is that after having ridden super bikes I know that no car is ever going to give me the same performance level, so whatever I finished up with was going to be a lot less thrilling in the speed department but hopefully more fulfilling overall. The first thing I looked at in a car was performance. For the last 6 years ‘R’ has owned a 2001 Clio 172 sport which is a real hooligan vehicle. 0 to 60 in 7 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph and I considered a more modern version of that, as up to recently it was still top dog in the super mini league both in terms of price and performance but to me another Clio wasn’t special enough. It has always been a bonus of my job that over the years I have been able to drive many different cars so several of the vehicles on my bucket list I had already tried. Some people said I should get myself an old classic but then I have driven or owned some iconic cars from the past and to me that’s where they should stay. In the sixties I owned a Mini Cooper 970 S of which only a thousand were ever made. 65 BHP, 0 to 60 in about 12 seconds and a top speed of 100 mph; today most delivery vans are faster and in 1974 I sold the car for £300. A fully restored version today would cost about £40K and still be worse than the one I owned. Think what modern metal you could get for that amount. With ultimate performance in mind I considered a Lotus Elise SC or the more extreme Exige. Both of these cars are capable of 0 to 60 in about 4 seconds and have a top speed of over 140 mph. While these cars are usually available with very low mileages even a 6 year old example can still cost over 25K. The other disadvantage with them is that they have only enough luggage space for a very small bag and there is also no way that you can get in and out of the car without performing a sort of bodily origami. Women in skirts forget it.

Z4

by Colin Viner

For some 60 years the garage has acted as import agents for forces personnel sending cars home from overseas postings, so one day in July I had a call from a teacher in Cyprus who wanted to send a BMW Z4 back to the UK to be delivered to Park Lane BMW London for sale. Thinking quickly I said I might be interested in buying the car myself, so one fine sunny day in August I took a train to Mildenhall in Suffolk to collect the car from the container depot. I like trains and the journey was great, passing through some lovely countryside. A man was waiting to collect me from Kennet Station and before long I had my fist look at the car. It was a pale gold colour, had a metal folding roof, 3 litre engine and 6 speed auto box. It appeared to be almost spotless with only a slight mark on the front bumper and a tiny chip from the edge of one wheel. Once I had signed for it I climbed in, familiarized myself with the controls and headed for the road home. I drove for about 6 miles along the A11 before I pulled over to put the hood down. The way these metal roofs fold into the boot always amazes me and I never tire of watching as it all disappears at the press of a button. All the way home I stayed in the slow lane of the motorway, hood down, radio on full blast. Performance suddenly became an irrelevance and I wondered why all this time I had been pursuing cars with faster acceleration and top speed when the only place you can test it is on a race track. After a thorough inspection back at work I decided to buy the car rejoicing in the fact that it was only 4 ½ years old and that I had got it some 3K less than the market value and almost a third of what the original owner paid new. Pride in a car is something I haven’t had for years and the Z4 is the only car of mine I have polished in living memory. It is however a sun only car that is going to have to last, so during the winter it will sit in my garage well away from salty roads. Roll on the spring!

After having driven a couple of Mercedes SLKs I did consider one of them but in the end decided that the dynamically superior Porsche Boxster or Cayman was the car to go for. I was in the process of finding a 6 year old 3.4 S manual within my price range when a phone call at work changed everything. 60

Gardening

Blowsy Begonias E

VERY GARDENER HAS AT LEAST ONE GUILTY secret: mine is begonias. My mother insists they are vulgar and she wouldn’t give them house room. A gardening friend turned up her nose at my begonia baskets last year, but I won’t hear a word against them. They are the cheerful, cockney barrow boys of the plant world and I love them. They are pretty easy to grow once you know how, and you can start them off any time now if you have a warm windowsill or a propagator. One of the reasons I find them so satisfying to grow is that they start life as a rather unprepossessing tuber, which my husband once described as looking like dried dog poo - he isn’t a gardener. The tubers should feel rock hard when you squeeze them. If they feel spongy, put them back. There is also a right way up and a wrong way up. Take your tuber and examine it. There should be a concave surface - like a little dip - and a convex surface. The dip is the upper surface from which the shoots will grow and the convex surface sprouts the roots. continues overleaf

Gardening Fill some 12cm/5 inch pots with soil-less potting compost so that the surface of the compost is 2.5cm /1 inch below the rim of the pot. This eventually allows for watering, but at this time of year the top of the tuber should be kept dry. Push the tubers – remember concave side up into the compost so that the top of each tuber is still visible. Do not bury them. Keep the pots at somewhere between 15-18C / 60-75F in the propagator, in a greenhouse, or on a bright windowsill, though not in direct sunlight. Water with care, and when the first flowers appear make sure they are well ventilated. High humidity and erratic watering can cause the buds to drop off. Finally, begonias have both male and female flowers. The male ones are far bigger and more showy, so pinch off the female ones, which can be spotted because they possess an embryonic seed pod behind the bud. Doing this will mean that the male flowers last much longer. You may need to stake them to support the heads. When summer arrives, you will be able to plant up pots and baskets and bask in the flamboyant blowsy beauty of the begonia – who could resist?

Jo Deacon

THE GREAT FEBRUARY STORM by Jo Deacon

One night while folk were sleeping’’, A great storm hit the Green. The next day people said it was the worst they’d ever seen.

There was no fun in playing out, You just got cold and wet. You couldn’t roll a rainball ‘cause the water wouldn’t set!

With windows cracked, and tiles blown off And thatch strewn on the grass, The lanes were blocked with fallen branches, Nothing could get past.

The broken bricks from chimney pots Lay scattered all around. And branches snapped from brittle trees Lay on the soggy ground.

A great oak fell upon the school But landed in the yard. It didn’t do much damage But poor Miss Hoole took it hard

Most greenhouses were tumbled glass, Their veggies baby-size. They’d not survive the wet and cold, This year ther’d be no prize.

She was the village teacher, and her cottage stood close by, And at the scene of devastation, she began to cry.

While grown ups helped each other out, And tidied, dug, and mended, The children watched Miss Hoole’s TV And stayed warm and contented.

The weathermen had warned of snow, Instead, the rain had poured. Instead of throwing snowballs, People chose to stay indoors.

That night, though worried just in case The winds came back again, All folk slept soundly in their beds Not even sound of rain. And in the morning, what a sight There was to greet their eyes. The world outside had all turned white, With beautiful blue skies!
