NEW YEAR 2015

Editor’s Letter

80

Happy New Year to all our readers and advertisers from the Town Crier, and we hope 2015 brings you all you wish for! At this time many of us make resolutions to change our lives, so in this month’s Town Crier we look at ways that you can give yourself a New Year Makeover! There are many articles on making a change in your fitness, health and wellbeing. Also in the first of a series we look at how you can make changes in your home starting with the Kitchen. We are always interested in receiving items of local interest from our readers for inclusion in the magazine - for example in this issue we received articles from Melksham Country Dancing, Calne Junior Rugby and Wilshire and Berks Canal Trust - why not join them and write something for the Town Crier in 2015! Until next time . . .

Funding for computers If you are looking for computer equipment to help people get online, learn how to send emails or use the internet to help them in their everyday lives then Wiltshire Council’s Wiltshire Online project may be able to help. The Area Boards and Wiltshire Online are now inviting bids for funding to help people make the most of the internet and computers across the County. This could involve installing broadband into village halls, purchasing laptops or tablet computers for use by local people, improving your IT training facilities, creating IT hubs or providing assistive technology for people with disabilities. Applications for capital equipment are welcome. You will simply have to demonstrate that your project will help more people to get access to the internet and computing, gain skills or help them get more from IT technology to help them in their everyday life. You can apply online now – use this link http://portal.wiltshire. gov.uk/areaboard_grants/eligibility.php to start an application. For grants under £1,000 no match funding is required, for bids over £1,000 you will need to secure some match funding. You can find out more about our grants criteria here: http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/council/ areaboards/areaboardscommunitygrantsscheme.htm Wiltshire Council currently awards £1m every year to support community groups and for every £1 it awards, communities are chipping in £3. That delivers projects totalling nearly £4m every year – projects that help build stronger, more resilient and more vibrant communities right across the County.

Betty Bird 01249 750551 WILTSHIRE PARKING CONSULTATION – DON’T MISS OUT Wiltshire Council is reminding residents and business to have their say in a comprehensive review of car parking across the county. So far more than 2,500 responses have been submitted by the public as part of a consultation about the council’s car parking policy. The outcome could see a move away from the current charging for parking based on four bands, to options based on individual car parks or town assessments. These options will use factors such as usage of car parks, location, as well as looking at the wider economic and environmental issues. This approach gives the Council greater ability to manage car parking demand and supply. The review will also consider a number of charging options, including first hour free parking, free after 4pm, Sunday charges, or evening charges as tools to enhance local communities’ ability to use their local services. The deadline for public consultation is Monday 19th January 2015. All documentation about the car parking review is available to see at the Wiltshire Council website.

Local Canal Trust Wins £50,000 for Wildlife Trail Local canal organisation, the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is celebrating after winning £50,000 in The People’s Millions, a partnership between ITV and the Big Lottery, in a recent telephone vote. The charitable trust shared their vision of creating a Wildlife Trail along the canal towpath at Studley Grange near Royal Wootton Bassett, on land bordering the Biffa landfill site which has now been leased to the trust. On the night of the vote, the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust promoted their project with a short film of local schoolchildren exploring the wildlife at Pewsham Locks site near Chippenham. Trust Secretary Chris Coyle explained the aims of the project, emphasising the community wide appeal of a wildlife trail. The canal trust was up against a Bristol based community choir Handfuls of Harmony, which won the public vote on the night, but the trust team was surprised and delighted when Studley Wildlife Trail also won £50,000 as the runner-up with the highest number of votes.

Stewart Parsons of Ellendale Environmental, who works with the Canal Trust to ensure that environmental issues are observed correctly, set up everything for the film session: he answered all the children’s questions, brought along magnifiers, trays, pooters, a wildlife trail quiz, plus bird, bat and dormouse boxes to show them. He said: “A wildlife trail along a canal is fantastic as it provides such a range of habitats and species. The creation of a trail at Studley Grange is a really exciting project as it will engage with so many members of the local community, including children. We must ensure that we create such places and preserve our natural heritage for the future.” Children from St Peter’s CE Academy Chippenham were involved with the filming and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They not only learned about the wildlife, but also found out how TV programmes are filmed. The cameraman, interviewer, and ITV and Big Lottery representatives were all very impressed with their enthusiasm. Chris Coyle said, “ We are so delighted that we were awarded this special prize. We would like to thank Stewart Parsons, St Peter’s Schoolchildren, The People’s Millions and everyone who voted for us. We are so looking forward to getting on with the project!”

by Val Melville

Fundraising Director Kath Hatton said: “It was a real challenge to think of how to make the promotional film, as there is currently no access at the site near Studley Grange - that’s part of what we need the money for! But we had to show what we intend to achieve, and so we used a section of the canal at Pewsham which has already been restored and has an abundance of wildlife. Another challenge was the timing - November is not usually the best time to find creatures as they disappear for the winter. Luckily, the mild autumn and lovely weather on the day helped, and the children were very excited to discover spiders, beetles, caterpillars and snails, as well as lots of aquatic animals.”

SUMMER FUN IN CALNE PLAYSCHEME NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT The chairperson and main organiser of the Playscheme is retiring. If the Playscheme is to continue for the children of Calne, we must have more people to help on the committee with the organising, otherwise it will not run in 2015. The committee meets once per month with some extra commitment leading up to the summer holidays.

Calne Rugby Juniors - is recruiting Calne Junior Rugby offers free rugby to boys and girls aged 5-12 years. Sessions run at the Recreation Ground on Anchor Road, Calne every Sunday from 10-11.30am. The club is recruiting players and coaches. For details telephone the chairman David Conway on 07973182646 or Andrew Black on 07812994454, look up Calne RFC Juniors on Facebook or go to one of the training sessions. Junior Rugby is great fun and easy to learn. Children start out learning non-contact “Tag” rugby - where players grab velcro tags from each other’s belts to “tackle” - before progressing to contact rugby when they are aged 8-9 years. Calne RFC Junior section’s volunteers have worked hard to make the club a success. Last season the Under 8s finished third in their group at the Chippenham Festival and second at the Avondale festival. This season as Under 9s they have won all but one match decisively.

“When I think back to where we were four years ago I am amazed at how far we have come.” Says Andrew Black, one of the coaches. “That first year (2011) we were just about able to put together a team. Now 30-40 players turn up every week and we have players from Cherhill and Derry Hill as well as Calne. “We are now in a position to expand our teams, particularly boys and girls aged 5-8 and 10 and over. We are a friendly club, most of the coaches have children who play, and we ensure that everyone develops and gets a game. “The main aim is for the kids to enjoy themselves. That’s what has allowed us to build up our membership. Please do come along and give it a try!” Andrew Black - Tel: 07812994454

New Look Kitchen

“I wanted a kitchen with personality that was warm and welcoming”

Creating my dream kitchen I

by Carron Keohane, notsoshabbyinteriors.co.uk

filled our dreams, holding the promise of a warm, cosy home – something which had become a dim and distant memory to us!

T’S FAIR TO SAY THAT WHEN my husband Nick and I took on our ‘Grand Design’ project of 2010, we certainly didn’t expect it to takes us through to 2014. Yet here we are; older, wiser and certainly exhausted from the whole experience!

Through the cold winters (thank you Britain!) and monsoon like rain that more than once reached its final resting place on our bed (thank you leaking roof!), plans for our country kitchen became the only thing to keep us going. ‘Home ideas’ magazines started to make regular appearances around the table and colour charts became the ‘hot’ topic of conversation.

Having become smitten with a rundown 1960’s three bed, located in a picture postcard village, we took the plunge into a renovation and extension project and subsequently fell head first into a life of no heating, no electricity and a distinct lack of bathroom doors – much to our two teenage daughters disgust.

Having searched high low in every DIY store imaginable for a kitchen, we finally decided that this route was not for us! We wanted a kitchen with personality, we wanted a kitchen that was warm and welcoming; basically we wanted ‘UNIQUE’ and not something that you can find on the high street!

As the walls went up and our patience wore down, we found ourselves holding on to a vision of a perfectly vintage, shabby chic interior. Dreams of wood burning stoves and French style furniture 24

This presented us with a problem because as you know ‘Bespoke’ generally comes with an expensive price tag and by this point we were on a very tight budget! Now I may not have married a rich man but having an exceptionally talented carpenter for a husband proved just as useful in this instance! So following many an evening spent with pencil and paper (and the occasional bottle of wine), we designed our own kitchen suited to our own taste and style. We settled on solid pine cupboards, as we felt only ‘real wood’ would give us the country feel we were looking for. We chose pine as not only is it cheaper than hardwood but it has the prominent grain that we needed for the paint effect that we wanted to achieve.

establishments. As the kitchen began to take shape and come together, one by one the vintage tea pots and shabby chic crockery were smuggled in, spotty, stripy and gingham all took their place! Then came the Kilner jars – an item so practical, yet so classically vintage – it was impossible to stop at one! Every item of food in the cupboards was decanted and jarred and I even managed to track down some hand crafted material labels on the internet, giving them an old fashioned look impossible to find on the high-street.

We designed the kitchen to feature a central island and painted it using Laura Ashely ‘Summer Pudding’ in an eggshell finish. The colour is striking and offsets the simplicity of the cupboards surrounding it. For these we used Annie Sloan chalk paint, choosing ‘French linen’ for the base coat and ‘Paris Grey’ for the topcoat. The units were distressed to give a ‘Shabby Chic finish’ and finally protected with a couple of coats of wax. The inside of the open cupboards were also painted in ‘Summer Pudding’ to match the island unit and unify the whole scheme. We used hardwearing natural riven slate throughout for the worktops; the finish is stunning and adds texture and depth to the whole scheme.

Our kitchen now certainly lives up to our dreams and is perfect for those lazy Sunday brunches with the family and cosy dinner parties with friends. We run our own Shabby Chic Interiors business, www.notsoshabbyinteriors.co.uk , selling shabby chic and vintage furniture, mirrors, cushions, lampshades and home accessories so we were able to furnish it with some really interesting pieces, including two ‘bottle top’ barstools and a red gingham wingback arm chair; reupholstered by myself and completed with one of our handmade cushions. These items finish off our unique ‘country’ style kitchen and certainly make clearing up after dinner a considerably more enjoyable experience! Since finishing our own kitchen we have been commissioned to supply fit and finish a similar design for a friend and we now offer a bespoke kitchen design and fit service to the general public.

Even though we were at that time (according to Nick) firmly in the “We have no money, so you are banned from buying any frivolities!” phase I couldn’t resist the pull of Cath Kidston and other similar

ITCHEN DESIGNS HAVE COME ON IN LEAPS AND bounds over the last 15–20 years. There is no limit to what can be achieved and no limit to the number of gadgets available to make life easier when it comes to cooking, baking and making coffee.

Here’s how we, at The Real PaintBox, brought this honeyed pine sideboard into the modern world so that it could stay in its modern family kitchen without being an embarrassment. • Firstly, we gave careful consideration to the design of the kitchen, the style and the colours. We wanted to make sure that the transformed sideboard added value to the space and was admired, rather than looking even further out of place. The kitchen was a smart country style in a blue colour scheme with a gentle taupe and stone coloured background. Rather than painting the unit blue, we used the gentle stone and taupe colours from the background as our starting point.

BE

What IS limited is cupboard space. As kitchens evolve into spaces where families and friends can work, rest and play, they are no longer rooms simply lined with rows of identical cabinets. They often include breakfast bars, islands, dining areas and even comfy seating areas. As the demands of the kitchen expands and we need to house the extra bread machines, muffin makers and smoothie mixers, extra free standing furniture, providing essential additional storage has become part of the kitchen look too. But, what happens when this essential piece of storage – whether it’s a dresser, a sideboard or a bookcase, no longer ‘fits in’ with the more modern style kitchen units? The kitchen has moved on, evolved and been updated but the honeyed pine dresser is stuck in a time warp, unable to move on. The great news is that, with the arrival of Autentico Chalk Paint, this furniture can be brought into the modern world so that it becomes a

fashion statement in the kitchen space – a centre piece to be admired, not just ‘put up with’ because it’s useful.

Spaghetti alle Vongole

Serves: 4

Remove the clam flesh from the shells (you can leave a few in their shells for garnish) and dip them quickly into their cooking water to rinse off any sand. Strain the juices from the pan through a sieve lined with muslin or a sheet of kitchen paper and reserve the liquid.

Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 30 minutes Ingredients 500g/1lb very small fresh clams, or a small jar of clams in brine 3 tbsp olive oil 1-2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 tsp anchovy paste (optional) 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley 400g/14oz canned chopped tomatoes Salt and freshly ground black pepper 450g/1lb dried spaghetti

Method

32

Clams are a good buy in January and make a terrific healthy supper with an Italian flavour.

Heat the olive oil in a pan over a medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and fry until it begins to turn pale gold in colour, then add the anchovy paste (if using) and parsley and stir-fry for 30 seconds. Add the chopped tomatoes and the strained clam juices (if you are using a jar of clams, you can use some or all of the brine from the jar, but be careful it doesn’t make the sauce too salty). Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes.

If using fresh clams tap each one sharply and discard any which stay open. Scrub the remaining clams.

Cook the spaghetti according to packet instructions and drain.

Add the clams to 2-3 tbsps water in a heavybottomed pan. Cover with a lid and cook over a medium heat for 3-4 minutes, or until all the shells have opened. If using fresh clams discard any which have not opened after five minutes.

Mix the sauce into the cooked spaghetti. Serve garnished with parsley and any remaining clams in their shells.

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2015

Just before serving add the clam flesh to the sauce and stir well.

Healthy Asian-style Chicken Wings

Makes about 8-16 chicken wings depending on size. Preparation time: 10 minutes plus 30 minutes marinating time Cooking time: 45 minutes Ingredients 1 kg/2 pounds chicken wings 2.5cm/1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and sliced 4 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly chopped 8 tablespoons soy sauce 3 tablespoons sake or dry sherry 2 tablespoons sugar 225g/8oz plain all purpose flour

Method First make the marinade. Mix the ginger, garlic, soy sauce, sugar and sake or cooking sherry in a bowl. Marinate the chicken wings in this sauce for at least 30 minutes. Make sure all wings are coated and turn a couple of times during the marinating process. Preheat oven to 200C / Gas Mark 6. Cover a large tray with baking parchment. Place the flour into a shallow bowl then drain the wings of the marinade. Dip each wing carefully into the flour, shake off any excess then place the wings on the prepared tray. Bake skin side up for 15 minutes. Then turn the wings over so that the skin side is down and bake for another 15 minutes. Finally turn skin side up again and bake for a final 15 minutes to make sure they are crispy. Serve with salad on a bed of lettuce leaves.

The Hidden Jewel of Wiltshire

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

The Dumb Post Inn, Bremhill (Freehouse) has recently been taken over by Steve & Caroline Sawyer.

N OW OPEN

Steve was in the pub trade for over 20 years where he was involved in running one of the best public houses in Wiltshire and gaining a wealth of experience. Having decided to come back into the trade after a break of 6 years he decided it would have to be to be a pub with a great personality. “It had everything we were looking for, the best view in Wiltshire, with a patio to match and with mouth watering food a good selection of real ales and lager, we could bring the pub back to its former glory”. Steve, Caroline and all the staff look forward to welcoming you into the warmth and home comforts of The Dumb Post Inn.

Sink or Swim Learning to swim as an adult How did it happen? You’ve reached and exceeded the age at which you are legally regarded as an adult. You can drink, vote, drive, get married, pay taxes and get called to war. You have a job, own a home and lead a fulfilling life in lots of ways, but there is just one blot on the horizon – you still can’t swim! The inability to swim is a cause of embarrassment for many adults, and some are reluctant and even ashamed to admit to it. But though you may feel that there is a stigma attached, the first thing to understand is that you are not alone. There are many others just like you, and if you really want to, there is no reason in the world why you can’t master the art! People fail to learn to swim for a number of reasons. Some may have had a traumatic experience – almost drowning for example, after falling into deep water, or being the victim of a prank that got out of hand – whilst others simply may not have had the opportunity. Regardless of the cause, most non-swimming adults are afraid of water, and need to acknowledge the psychological as well as the physical barriers. Fear can keep us safe, but it can also prevent us from moving forward. Many non-swimmers are afraid of putting their face in the water and are scared that they won’t be able to float, yet more or less everyone floats. What sometimes gets in the way is fear and tension that causes you to hold yourself stiffly, hunch your head and shoulders, and push your feet towards the bottom of the pool.

Most non-swimmers are afraid to take their feet off the bottom and become panic-stricken if there is nothing to hold onto, but learning to trust that the water will hold you up rather than the reverse, is key to mastering the art of swimming. Though some people may opt to enlist the help of a friend or relative to teach them to swim, the best course is probably to turn to a professional with the correct training. But there are things you can do yourself to help boost confidence: Walk around in chest-deep water to get used to how it feels and maintain balance; Repeatedly dip your face and body in and out of the water, holding on to the side for support; Practice floating on your stomach with your face in the water; With the help of a float, lie on your back, gradually introducing kicking movements with your legs. However you decide to proceed, please remember there is no shame in not being able to swim!

Relax… Restore… Rebalance with

Reflexology It is a well-known fact that too much stress can be detrimental to our health. However, life is so busy that some days we can barely make time for a cup of tea never mind think about the effect it is having on our health. Scientists have been telling us for years that elevated levels of the stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline, impact strongly on our health and wellbeing. Indeed many of our modern-day illnesses and diseases are exacerbated or linked in some to way to the excessive stress that we experience in our busy lives. It can interfere with our cognitive processes, such as learning and memory function, lower our immunity, suppress our reproductive and digestive systems, decrease our bone density levels, affect our weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and increase our risk of heart disease and stroke.

Do you suffer with one or more of the following problems: • Stress, anxiety, low mood, low selfesteem • Sleep problems • Digestive issues • Hormonal/fertility imbalances • Joint & muscular pain/stiffness • Headaches Learn more at www.sarahrutherford.org Whilst the body is an incredible entity, sometimes it needs a helping hand. One of the ways to achieve this is through the ancient art of reflexology, well known by some doctors, consultants and other health care professionals as a well established, respected and effective therapy. A well-trained reflexologist can help facilitate the body’s own healing process, allowing time and space for the individual to enable themselves to heal from within. So next time you are feeling a little stressed, why not take time out and let us help you relax, restore and rebalance with Reflexology. Sarah Rutherford Dip.Reflex.MAR

Yoga Is there anyone left on earth who doesn’t know that if we want to be healthy we need to exercise? Exercise strengthens our heart, lungs and bones; increases our mobility and flexibility; burns calories, improves mood, sleep and memory and infuses us with energy. So after the excesses of Christmas, put exercise at the top of your New Year’s resolution’s list. Remember exercise should be fun! Forget slogging away in a gym (unless that’s your thing). Why not try something completely different in 2015, like yoga? Developed more than 5000 years ago in India, Hatha Yoga is the most common form in the west. It involves physical posture work (asanas) and deep breathing (pranayamas), in preparation for meditation (dhyana), when the mind is quiet and focused on a single object, sound or chant. The exercises stretch and flex the spine and the joints, strengthen muscles and bones, tone up the internal organs and stimulate circulation, digestion and the nervous system. In the Sanskrit language yoga means union, harmony and balance. It results in body-awareness, because it calms the mind, while bringing vitality, strength, and flexibility to the body. After practising yoga you will become more aware of how you stand, sit and walk and how you cope in stressful situations.

TO ADVERTISE CALL 01249 811068

Yoga is a safe and relaxing form of exercise that can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age or ability. It is gentle and non-competitive. Don’t think you have to be a contortionist and tie yourself up into impossible positions like some super fit celebrities. Once you’re in a posture, you breathe and relax into it and only do as much as your body will let you. Yoga is suitable for almost anyone, though if you have health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, a back or neck injury or have undergone recent surgery, then you should consult your doctor before embarking on any new exercise regime. There are many forms of Hatha Yoga to suit all levels of fitness. Ananda and Iyengar Yoga are good types to start with, but there are more vigorous forms like Ashtanga and Bikram Yoga for those who like a challenge. You’ll find information about your nearest beginner’s yoga class from The British Wheel of Yoga, a registered charity and the largest yoga organisation in the country. Loose clothing and a non-slip mat are all you need to get started. If you want to improve your stamina, strength, flexibility, posture, and cope better with stress, enrol in a yoga class and you’ll have taken the first step into an activity you can enjoy for many years.

Pedal power! Road cycling is an exhilarating way to challenge yourself and get fit You know what they say about riding a bike – once you’ve learned you never forget. So if you enjoyed zooming down hills when you were younger (and struggling up them!) road cycling may be the ideal sport for you. As the name suggests, road cycling involves riding exclusively on roads, and the aim is to build up your speed and the distance you can cover.

By Alex Brown

It’s a very efficient way to get fit and lose weight as it’s one of the few sports that you can sustain for two to four hours. Like running, it gets you out in the fresh air, but it is low impact and places less strain on your joints.

British Cycling’s Ride Social

Road bikes are designed for racing. They have a lightweight frame, narrow tyres and rounded handlebars so that you sit forward in an aerodynamic position. You can pay anything from £150 to £5000 plus. Cheaper bikes are made from steel or aluminium, while the more expensive are carbon fibre or titanium, which is amazingly strong and light.

Ride Social is Britain’s biggest social cycling community, helping you get together with like-minded cyclists and ride your way. The Ride Social website, powered by British Cycling, lets you organise your own bike rides using your favourite routes. Share your ride for local cyclists to join and before you know it you have your own cycling group.

If you decide to take up the sport seriously, look for a well-known brand and expect to pay around £600. Getting the right size is important, so ask your local bike shop for advice. Your legs should be almost straight when they are on the pedal at bottom of the turn. There are two types of pedals on road bikes. Platform pedals are like those on a traditional bicycle and you will need to add toe clips. Modern clipless pedals will need special shoes with cleats on them that fix your foot to the pedals.

46

Think of road cycling as a long-term sport. It will take you a few weeks to get used to your bike and build up your speed and stamina. Joining a club is a great way to keep motivated. You’ll find a directory of over 1500 clubs at www.britishcycling.org.uk ranging from informal groups who ride for pleasure to competitive racing teams. So what are you waiting for – get on your bike!

To celebrate the launch of Ride Social, British Cycling and Sky are offering you the chance to join a bike ride with a Team Sky cyclist! Here’s what you need to do to be in with a chance of winning this fantastic experience: • Head to ridesocial.co.uk • Create a ride on Ride Social that takes place between 14th November – 8th February

The saddle of a road bicycle is normally very narrow and can be uncomfortable, so you may want to get a gel cover or wear padded shorts.

• Take a selfie of you and your group having fun on your ride

When you’re out on the roads, safety has to be your top priority. A helmet is a must, as is brightly coloured clothing. Ride your bike as if you were driving a car and obey traffic laws. Take a tool kit with you – a spare inner tube, tyre levers, puncture repair kit, pump and Allen keys are essential. It’s also sensible to carry your address and phone number in case of an accident.

Keep an eye online to see which Team Sky cyclist you’ll be joining. The prize ride will take place in spring 2015. Log on to ridesocial.co.uk for a chance to ride with Team Sky and check out the new look Ride Social.

To Eat, or not to Eat! Should we diet?

T

HE United Kingdom has the third highest level of obese and overweight people in Western Europe, with nearly a third of adults and more than a quarter of children fitting into this category. The statistics are worrying, especially as obesity increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and other diseases. So, what is making us fat and what can we do about it? Put simply, we put weight on when we consume more calories than we use. This could be due to portion size or the type of food we eat. Foods rich in sugar or fat contain the most calories and are most likely to make us gain weight. It’s New Year, and many of us will make the decision to lose weight, but what is the best way to tackle it? There are numerous diets, aids, supplements and slimming clubs out there, some promising amazing results. You’ve seen the adverts about people who have lost six stones in as many months and are feeling great! It’s tempting to want to shift the excess pounds as quickly as possible, to get the business of dieting over with, and get back to normal life again. The sad fact is that the vast majority of people who lose weight put it back on again, and this is because once the weight is lost, they do return to ‘normal’ by reverting back to the habits that caused them to gain weight in the first place. This is particularly true for people who lose weight quickly.

48

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2015

No doubt just about any diet can help you lose weight, but the real test is: which one can help you keep it off? Over the years there have been various diets - the high fibre, high protein, high carb, grapefruit, cabbage soup and meal replacement diets to name a few. But increasingly, evidence suggests that the most effective way to lose and maintain weight loss is not to follow a ‘diet’ at all, but to simply make changes to eating habits that can be sustained for life. Diets don’t generally work because they demand more of us than we can realistically give for a prolonged period. Eating regimes that deny us all the things we enjoy, that leave us feeling hungry and a social outcast on nights out, will inevitably cause us to revolt at some point and turn back to old ways. Becoming better educated, learning new habits, taking responsibility for our choices, continuing to live a normal life and losing weight gradually at around 1-2 lbs per week will, in the long run, produce the best chances of permanent success at the scales. Good luck as you take the first step to becoming a slimmer and healthier you!

Fit and Fun! by Sarah Davey

If you’ve tried aerobics, spinning and swimming and still can’t get into your exercise groove, what about these more unusual ways to get fit and burn fat? Bounce Baby! While a trampoline gives you some bounce and helps you to become airborne, you need to use your muscles to push yourself into the air and to control your movements so you stay upright. If you’ve ever spent time on a trampoline with your kids, you know it’s a great workout! Invest in a good trampoline for your garden and use it regularly. It’s fun and will get you outdoors into the fresh air, as well as help you to build muscle and burn calories. Dance like there’s no-one watching! Salsa dancing is a great way to get your legs and bum toned and firm, and it’s also a fun way to spend time with someone you love! You can dance on your own or visit a dance club and join the group. You’ll make friends and have the most fun you’ve ever had getting into shape! Be the daring young man or woman on the flying trapeze! When you use a trapeze you need to control all your muscles for proper balance and stretching, and it’s a great way to burn calories at the same time. More gyms are offering classes now. Look for a beginner class near you and don’t worry about heights. Initially you start very close to the ground as you learn how to get comfortable in the harnesses and about the mechanics of swinging. Only then will you move on to more advanced moves. Pole is good for the soul! Pole dancers need to be in great shape, since they swing themselves around a pole to get into a variety of positions for the best routine. It’s a fun and effective way to get into shape, and can also be very sexy! Remember that there is a HUGE difference between pole dancing and stripping, so don’t be shy about checking out a class near you. You may find it’s one of the most enjoyable ways to burn calories, trim your waistline, and build long, lean muscles. Surfing USA...but indoors! Surfers usually have great leg muscles toned bottoms, since they’re using all these muscles to keep themselves on their boards and to guide and direct themselves in the water. Today, indoor surfing classes are popping up in gyms everywhere because this is such a fun way to stay in shape. These classes use short boards that work much like surfboards and which tone all the lower body muscles. They’re a fun and inventive way to work out and may even turn you into a serious surfer!

Vary your route as always running in the same place at the same time can make you vulnerable to assailants, and note road names as you pass. Choose a well lit route with an even surface. Consider running with a friend or friends, this will keep you motivated and help you to stay safer. Always tell someone where you are going and approximately what time you will be back. Consider taking a mobile phone and personal alarm. You could also try free apps such as Glympse which allow you to share your location with people so they can track you. Olympic legacy delivering health improvements Wiltshire Council is in top band of local authorities creating a lasting legacy of fitness, physical activity and healthy living, according to a new report. People living in the county also live longer than most other local authorities, and Wiltshire is also classed as one of the least deprived places in the UK. The new study was carried out by UK Active, a national not-for-profit body working to improve fitness levels. It found that Wiltshire has one of the lowest rates of people who are inactive – those getting less than 30 minutes of moderate exercise every week, such as cycling or fast walking. Fewer than 25% of people living in Wiltshire were ranked as inactive, compared with the national average of nearly a third (29%). Overall, in a table of 150 local authorities which UK Active included in the study, called ‘Turning the Tide of Inactivity’, Wiltshire was ranked 22nd. The council has been building a sporting legacy in the county since the success of the London Olympics in 2012. The Legacy for Wiltshire initiative aims to help bring communities together, encourage people to keep active and healthy, and support future Olympians and Paralympians.

The council runs an annual sports awards, and supports local athletes through the Funding Future Olympians Scholarship, and the Elite Athletes Grant. In October athletes, sports clubs, volunteers and coaches across Wiltshire were recognised for their exceptional achievements at the fifth Wiltshire Sports Awards. Jointly hosted by Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire Health Improvement Panel, and Wiltshire and Swindon Sport and sponsored by Landmarc, 12 awards were handed out, and ten Funding Future Olympians and Paralympians Sports Scholarship grants of £500 were presented to talented young sports stars aged between eight and 16 years old. Jonathon Seed, cabinet member for leisure, said: “We welcome the UK Active report which identifies what we already knew, that Wiltshire is one of the healthiest places to live in the UK. “I would encourage people to find out more about the exciting intiatives happening at their local leisure centres.” Hundreds of people have pledged their support into this year’s Wiltshire Challenge by choosing to walk, cycle and swim their way to fitness. This year the Wiltshire Challenge also formed part of the council’s Big Pledge which encouraged individuals, communities and businesses to make a lifestyle change, or support an improvement in their local area.

Cotswold Wildlife Park wins prestigious national award Voted entirely by the public, Cotswold Wildlife Park won the Kennel Club’s Be Dog Friendly Award for Most Dog Friendly Day Out in the UK, an award the Park are thrilled to receive. The Park has been dog friendly from the day it first opened in 1970. Reggie Heyworth, Managing Director of Cotswold Wildlife Park, said: “In the early days of the Wildlife Park we were alone in the zoo community for allowing dogs on the premises, even though it meant that we were therefore barred from being members of the UK Zoo Federation! In those days, we were under a lot of pressure to ban dogs, but my father, the founder of the park, was never without his dogs trotting along behind him so it was out of the question that we would ban dogs!” Many of the staff are devoted dog owners. One of the newest members of the canine family include Finance Director Nichola Waddicor’s rescue dog Freddie (Photo above). When he is at the Park, Freddie goes everywhere with Nichola, riding in the basket of her bike around the Park. His start in life was a tragic one. He was abandoned (along with his brother) at the bottom of a farm track in Carmarthen back in August 2013.

The two dogs were taken in by a lady who nursed them back to health when they were around six weeks old. Six more puppies were found further down the lane by someone who handed them into the RSPCA. Freddie has been with Nichola and her family since October 2013 and a family friend gave Freddie’s brother (named Timmy) a home and they see each other regularly.

Health Mattters

Puppy Power! They say a dog is for life and not just for Christmas and to test that theory I bought my husband a puppy in December. The new addition to the Butcher household is a Boston Terrier named Bertie who is as cute as a button. We start puppy training classes this month and I am dubious as to who is going to be trained – the dog, or us? I suspect it will be us as we have allowed Bertie to pick up some bad habits over the past few months. Apparently, dogs are very clever animals that are able to condition and train their owners without us even being aware of it. I know who certainly now rules the roost in our house and he’s got pointy ears and the brownest puppy dog eyes! Making it impossible to discipline him when he’s chewing my socks, or deny him a space on the sofa for a little cuddle. It’s funny how pets become extended members of your family, but did you know that there are health benefits to pet ownership as well? I read an article recently regarding a scientific study which discovered that pet owners tend to visit doctors less often. Now I must say I was sceptical when I read this as I doubt the study took into consideration owners of every type of pet. For instance the health benefits of owning a goldfish are less obvious than that of owning other pets, such as dogs. Dog owners will naturally take more exercise than goldfish owners. Dog walking is a great way of increasing physical activity and helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular and obesity related illnesses. I am not convinced that you can get the same kind of physical boost from owning goldfish, but I may be wrong. One health benefit which both goldfish and dogs have in common is the ability to reduce the stress levels of their owners. Watching fish swimming through water has a calming effect and is probably why you will often find a mini aquarium in waiting rooms.

The mood enhancing benefits to pet ownership is not only isolated to dogs and goldfish of course. A study was carried out in 2011 by Cats Protection in conjunction with the Mental Health Foundation, involving over 600 cat and non-cat owning respondents, half of which described themselves as suffering from mental health problems. The survey found that 87% of people who owned a cat felt it had a positive impact on their sense of wellbeing, while 76% said that they could cope with everyday life much better thanks to the company of their feline friends. 50% of the cat owners surveyed felt that their pet’s presence and companionship was most helpful in reducing mental health symptoms. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that children who are exposed to animals in the first year of their lives have a healthier immune system but having a pet also improves children’s social skills and encourages childhood responsibility. Youngsters who help look after their pets are taught to develop compassion, understanding and respect for living things. Of course pets can be a great source of joy and companionship regardless of your age and are often used as part of patient therapy, visiting special needs schools, hospices and care homes. Pet therapy has proven especially useful in treating stroke victims. For more information on animal assisted therapy visit www.Petsastherapy.org. So the moral to this tale (excuse the pun) seems to be that if you want to spend less time with your GP spend more time with your pet. In my experience they are cuddlier, more obedient and happier to see you at the end of a long day.

Over Christmas I met my husband in Bath for a quick bite to eat. He brought Bertie with him and every five minutes a complete stranger would stop us and say ‘aaaah, isn’t he cute’. Since Bertie came in to our lives, he is more than often the topic of conversation. ‘Hi Emmy, how’s your new puppy?’ is a common greeting nowadays and I have gotten to know my friends and work colleagues better through ‘dog’ related conversations. This commonality is an ice breaker, a conversation starter and a reason to make social interactions which improves personal confidence. Walking a dog often leads to chats with other dog owners and this helps to reduce social isolation and provides people with a sense of feeling socially connected. People who have more social relationships and friendships tend to be mentally healthier. In addition, exercise is also known to not only help ease the symptoms of depression but actually help to prevent people from becoming depressed in the first place.

Raw Spirit Iain Banks

Orange Pear Apple Bear

Subtitled ‘In Search of the Perfect Dram’, this book is the story of Iain Banks’ journey around Scotland, visiting as many single malt whisky distilleries as he can and tasting as many types as possible: surely every whisky lover’s dream holiday.

Monkey and Me Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears All by Emily Gravett

At first lain Banks can’t believe that a publisher really wants him to undertake the task of visiting all of Scotland’s distilleries - there are around a hundred of them, not including those which have closed. Then he begins to realise what an opportunity it is. So, accompanied by various friends and relations, he sets off - stipulating only that he can drive himself and can stop off at home several times to return the spoils of his visits in the shape of as many bottles of single malt as he can carry. From the ‘tourist traps’ of Glenfiddich to the smaller operations like Aberfeldy, he takes us on a journey through the world of whisky. Banks’ style is humorous and engaging throughout, from the first visit to Islay to his final trip to Oban. This is what makes this much more than a tasting guide - in fact, it’s as much a travel book for his beloved Scotland and includes a fair smattering of autobiography, too. If you’re a lover of Uisgebaugh then you may or may not agree with his choice of the perfect dram, but you’ll certainly have fun comparing notes. And, if whisky isn’t your thing then there’s enough scenery, humour and even political comment to keep your interest throughout. The perfect gift for a whisky-lover.

With simple text and charming illustrations, there is an Emily Gravett book to suit all ages. Orange Pear Apple Bear is beautifully simple, with a different permutation of the title on every page, and will provoke big laughs from babies (Apple Bear is the current favourite in our house). Available as a sturdy board book, it can be revisited again and again. Monkey and Me is well suited to toddlers who will identify with the main character as, along with her toy monkey, she goes to see all kinds of animals. The simple repetition in the text will have little ones ‘reading’ along and anticipating the revelation on the next page - perfect for reading aloud. Finally, Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears, is an award-winning book, which is ideal for slightly older readers. Each page details a different one of Little Mouse’s fears, encouraging children to talk about why they might be frightened of things like the dark or monsters under the bed. The real delight here is the multi-layered illustrations, with chewed pages (aided by real mice!) notes, scribbles and annotations. This, and the others above, deserve to become modern classics.

Offering a wide selection of books, greetings cards, classical music and an inspiring gallery space featuring the work of talented local artists. Open Mon-Sat 9:00-5:30

Kept – DJ Taylor Billed as a Victorian Mystery, this novel by DJ Taylor is a true page turner in the style of Dickens, Wilkie Collins and the like. With multiple narratives and a range of perspectives, Taylor weaves a web of intrigue around the life and death of Mr Henry Ireland and his wife, which surprises and delights the reader.

which sees the pig family head to the beach for a picnic. On their journey they encounter every vehicle known, from the forklift to the locomotive, and many vehicles that are not known, from the pumpkin car to the broom-o-cycle. Each detailed spread provides the opportunity to make up stories and describe situations. Will Officer Flossy catch Dingo? Will Rollo Rabbit catch his runaway steamroller? Reviews by Kath Bennett

The novel begins with an arresting episode in which two men find themselves by a Scottish loch undergoing a series of challenges to steal rare birds’ eggs. This links them to the strange but eminent naturalist James Dixey, who in turn becomes the guardian of a strangely disturbed young woman. At times the narrative thread is truly puzzling, and the reader must connect and theorize for themselves – but this is no bad thing, and at least we can read on at our own pace rather than having to wait, in the Victorian manner, for the next instalment. There are plenty of potential heroes and heroines, and a smattering of particularly villainous villains, for us to engage with too. One for those dark winter nights in front of the fire – abandon the television and curl up with a good book instead. Although be warned – you may stay up later than you had intended, reading on to the finish!

Cars and Trucks and Things that Go! Millions of children have grown up with picture books written and illustrated by Richard Scarry. By the time he died in 1994 he’d sold more than 100 million copies around the world. One of the best known is Cars and Trucks and Things that Go! To celebrate its 40th birthday recently, the Designer Paul Smith – a huge Scarry fan himself - was asked to redesign the work while retaining the charm of Scarry’s original drawings. There was also a boxed set which was limited to just 1000 copies and is already re-selling for hundreds of pounds a copy. While most of us will never get the chance to own the boxed set, the new-look book is well worth seeking out. It has certainly impressed Scarry’s son Huck, also a children’s writer and illustrator, who said: “Paul Smith and his team have amazed me. It’s Richard Scarry seen with Paul Smith’s eyes.” For those who don’t know the work, every manner of moving machinery is riotously depicted in a story TO ADVERTISE CALL 01249 811068

There’s a national awareness day for Winnie the Pooh on 18th January, which commemorates the birth in 1882 of British author and playwright Alan Alexander Milne, the creator of Pooh and his friends Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore. The book Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared in print in 1926 and was followed two years later by The House at Pooh Corner. Though Milne only wrote two Pooh books, his characters have become popular worldwide. The characters are based on toys owned by Milne’s son, who also appears in the books as his namesake Christopher Robin. They were written in Hatfield, East Sussex and locations such as Hundred Acre Wood, Galleon’s Leap and The Enchanted Place are linked with real places in and around nearby Ashdown Forest. The books contain some wonderful lines that are simple and innocent but also wise: ‘Weeds are flowers, too, until you get to know them.’ ‘If the person you are talking to doesn’t appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.’ Though there are no official events to mark Winnie the Pooh Day, here are some ideas for your own celebration: create some Winnie the Pooh artwork, dress up as a favourite character or play Pooh sticks!

GOOD VIBRATIONS with Brian Justice

Folk Rock Lives A

UDIENCES across the country have the opportunity to see the legendary folk rock band Fairport Convention during the early months of 2015. Widely regarded as the most important group in the English folk rock movement, the group play 27 dates from Glasgow to Bridport, Ulverston to Canterbury. The origins of the band go back to Muswell Hill, North London in 1966 where bass player Ashley Hutchings met guitarist Simon Nicol. Early jams and rehearsals took place in a house named “Fairport”, the family home of rhythm guitarist Simon Nicol. Thus was born the name of a band that has endured ever since. Richard Thompson (lead guitar) and Shaun Frater (drums) joined. That line-up played a solitary gig and drummer Martin Lamble would replace Frater in the first of numerous changes over the years. Another addition was female singer Judy Dyble. The band came to the attention of producer Joe Boyd (who worked on their first 5 albums) and at his suggestion Iain Matthews (vocals) joined and the debut album, “Fairport Convention”, came out before the end of 1967. Despite Judy Dyble’s talent it was her replacement Sandy Denny that pushed the “Fairports” into a whole new area. Their second and third albums “What We Did On Our Holidays” and “ Unhalfbricking” (featuring a guest appearance by fiddling wizard Dave Swarbrick) increased their popularity mixing strong self penned material with contemporary songs by the likes of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. The late great radio DJ John Peel was a supporter playing their work on his influential BBC shows spreading the word(and music) to an ever accepting public. The “Fairports” appeared on TV’s “Top Of The Pops” promoting their top 30 hit “Si Tu Dois Partir” (from the “Unhalfbricking” album). The song was, unusually , a French language version of the Bob Dylan song, “If you gotta go, go now” (UK smash previously [in English] for Manfred Mann). The group’s career was going so well when disaster struck. Fairport’s van crashed on the M1 motorway on the way home from a gig in Birmingham. Martin Lamble - just 19 years old - and Jeannie Franklyn, Richard Thompson’s girlfriend, were killed. The rest of the band suffered injuries of varying severity. The band considered calling it a day but decided to carry on. Matthews had left the band by then and Dave Mattacks took over the vacant drum stool. The resulting LP, “Liege And Lief”, was a classic. This was perhaps Fairport

Convention’s finest musical statement committed to vinyl and established British folk rock as a distinct and influential genre. At the 2006 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards “Liege And Lief” was voted the “‘Most Influential Folk Album of All Time” by Radio 2 listeners. “Liege And Lief” was launched with a sell-out concert in London’s Royal Festival Hall late in 1969. Dave Swarbrick had made a big contribution to the project and he now joined the band full-time. Despite the success of the LP, founder member Ashley Hutchings quit to form Steeleye Span. To make matters worse Sandy Denny also left the band to go solo (she would rejoin briefly later). Dave Pegg took over on bass guitar and has been in the band ever since. Sandy Denny was irreplaceable so the band continued without a female singer. The next Fairport album was “Full House” (1970) but soon after its release Richard Thompson left the band. Thompson has gone on to be a revered musician and performer. Simon Nicol was now the only original member. I told you there were personnel changes (there would be more). “The show must go on” they say and the band played on and on and they have done so to great success ever since. Since 1979, the “Fairports” have hosted the Cropredy Festival, which is the largest such annual event in England. Individually and collectively the members of Fairport Convention have received numerous awards recognising their contribution to music and culture. They won the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2002 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Fairport Convention is still one of the busiest bands around. The current line-up of Simon Nicol (lead vocal, rhythm and electric guitars), Dave Pegg (backing vocals, bass guitar, mandolin), Ric Sanders (violin), Chris Leslie (lead vocal, fiddle, bouzouki, mandolin) and Gerry Conway (percussion and drums) still packs venues on its frequent tours. Each year starts with Fairport covering the length and breadth of Britain on its Winter Tour. In August, the band stages Fairport’s Cropredy Convention music festival in Oxfordshire. Most years, there is a tour in the USA and Canada and UK tours by the Fairport Acoustic line-up and by spin-off band The Dylan Project. So back to the 2015 “Wintour”. The band are on the road in support of their new studio album, “Myths and Heroes”. It all kicks off this month with a show at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections on the 16th - for details of all the Fairport Convention gigs, release etc go to: www.fairportconvention.com

Music

In the Groove Records are enjoying a revival “Mum this stuff is awesome! You should totally listen to it!” That was my teenage son ‘discovering’ my 80’s vinyl collection and my father’s collection of 78s. Because of course my dad and I know nothing about music while he and his friends are experts. In the age of the strangely invisible digital sound file, I watched his burgeoning love affair with these solid pieces of sound history with some amusement. 78s in particular are very tactile: the thick, heavy shellac, the dust, the stiff card cover. There’s a richness about them which time hasn’t dulled. In the way of teens, Charlie began to google his latest obsession. “Mum, did you know that in the early days they discovered that recording a piano while it was on the floor made it sound too tinny, so they suspended pianos in the air and made the pianist perch on an elevated platform? Cool?” I had to concede that I did not know this! Over the coming weeks I also learned that because there was no sound equipment early on, there was no way of modulating the volume of a singer to prevent distortion when recording. To get round this, a someone stood behind the singer reading the score, and when a particularly high note or loud phrase was imminent they pulled the singer away from the mic!

Our language even evolved to reflect our love of records. The phrase ‘In the groove’, ‘Groovy’, ‘To groove,’ all relate to the grooves on a 78, LP or single. In spite of all the studio shortcomings, collectors of old records swear the sound quality of 78s in particular has never been surpassed. The hiss and scratch caused by the patina and deterioration of old shellac discs appeals to them. As Charlie’s interest deepened, he spent a lot of time in specialist record stores and at collectors’ fairs. A surprising number of people deal in vinyl or 78s or both, and most of them are friendly individuals with a wealth of knowledge they are happy to share. It’s a curious fact that in the age of huge TVs and surround-sound, the sound quality of the music many of us listen to is going backwards, because often we listen through tiny earbuds or mobile phone speakers. It is also curious that many young musicians, steeped in electronics, are rediscovering the joy of playing with sound on vinyl and shellac, in much the same way that the scratch and mix DJs of the seventies, eighties and nineties did. Lots of us must have an old record player stashed in the attic along with our old vinyl LPs. We may even own a few 78s, inherited from our parents. The heyday of CDs lasted a mere 15 years, but there is more than 60 years’ of music recorded on to these older formats. Think about that. Perhaps it’s time to get them out, dust them off, and introduce a new generation to the joy of tangible sound.

Motoring Mayhem

Resolutions

by Colin Viner

that my injuries have healed I am back to cycling across Calne to collect customer’s cars and for shopping trips to the town centre.

I must admit that I have pretty well given up on New Year resolutions as I fail in the long term to stick with them. The only time I ever kept to anything for any length of time was when I once gave up crisps for Lent and then abstained for almost the rest of the year. However that doesn’t mean that I can’t start with good intentions even if they are doomed to failure. After another year of fixing vehicles with often avoidable problems, from my view people could do worse than resolve to pay more attention to home maintenance of their cars. Apart from keeping your car safer on the road it can also protect your wallet. Every year we finish up with at least 3 scrap cars because of owner neglect, that’s without all the thousands of pounds that could have been saved on the ones that were repairable. When was the last time you opened the bonnet to check oil and coolant or your tyres and pressures? It’s not rocket science and five minutes spent once a week could save thousands in repair bills or a scrap car. As an example of vehicle neglect one of my mechanics on his way home one evening counted seven vehicles with faulty lights between Lyneham and Royal Wootton Bassett. Sad thing to do I know but when you are around cars all your life it tends to get in the blood. I know how the weeks can roll by and you think you did something recently only to find it was several months ago so any resolution regarding routine car maintenance has to be backed up by a calendar, diary entry or recorded on mobile phone to jog your memory into action. Once you manage to get over the first hurdle of remembering to check your car it would help if you knew how to. Reading the owner’s manual thoroughly would help but if you are still unsure then go to your local garage and ask for advice on how to carry out your routine checks. At work we are regularly asked to check fluid levels and tyre pressures by those who feel it is all beyond them. One thing I don’t need to make a resolution about is to use my bicycle as often as possible and this despite my pirouette over the handle bars in September. Now

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2015

Since the Olympics and Bradley Wiggin’s success in the Tour De France there seems to have been a massive increase in the number of leisure cyclists, but apart from city centre commuters the numbers using a bike to get to work or for shopping in rural areas or small towns is woefully small. Yes I know that the roads are busy and can be dangerous but then so is sitting in a chair and getting fat. Both ‘R’ and I are now 65 but we are both slim and reasonably fit which I attribute to a healthy diet, regular exercise and not jumping in the car every time we want to go anywhere. There can be other bonuses to walking or cycling especially if you own a diesel powered car. Modern diesels do not like continuous short journeys as the engines very rapidly clog up. It’s OK if you blast down the motorway every day but otherwise no. Far better not to start the car at all for short journeys and either walk or cycle instead, just using the car for longer trips. It has been said that you should never start a diesel unless you intend to do at least 20 miles. If the thought of walking or cycling even a few yards fills you with horror then perhaps another resolution would be to ditch the diesel car and buy a petrol powered one instead. While numerous short journeys are still not a good idea they don’t suffer from the expensive to fix clogging that plagues diesels. Obviously that doesn’t mean you can ignore routine checks or regular servicing as even your petrol car can let you down but they are a lot more robust than diesels. The only downside is they use more fuel but that is more than offset by cheaper servicing and less problems. Whatever resolution you make don’t make one that you know you have no hope of keeping! The only incentive to maintaining your car more regularly is the peace of mind that it is less likely to let you down and in the long run will save your hard earned cash. As for cycling and walking it could save your life as well as the National Health Service billions treating heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Happy New Year!

Jo Deacon

Oh the “Joys” of the Open Road W

HEN I WAS 16 OR THEREABOUTS, I went off on a weekend fell-walking holiday with my then boyfriend, on the premise it would be fun. It was NOT!!! The tent was smelly and cramped, and wanting a wee in the middle of the night meant a perilous tramp across a dung-splattered rutted field in pitch darkness, sliding and slithering in something you really didn’t want to identify. I hadn’t even taken a torch would you believe!

I swore there and then I would never stay in a tent again as long as I lived– A VOW I HAVE FOUND IT EASY TO KEEP UNTIL THIS DAY. Besides, just a thin layer of canvas between a slumbering body and some prowling potential mad axe man outside doesn’t strike me as particularly safe. I’m a devout coward so camping is a definite “no-no” for me!

I woke up after a miserable mainly sleepless night to find I couldn’t move. A fully grown cow had chosen to make itself comfortable by curling up on the side of the tent, unfortunately it was the side I was lying on. A fully grown cow is bloody heavy let me tell you, and it wouldn’t get off me until tempted away by a handful of cornflakes. It was not an auspicious start to a weekend that grew from the promise of a fun-filled couple of days into a weekend from Hell!

But show me a motor home and it’s a different matter. I fall in love instantly with them all.

Fell walking is not a pleasant stroll through the grassy hillsides, admiring views of the lakes through the autumn trees. Nor is it a gentle anything! It’s tramping and tripping through uneven tussocks of mud spattered rough grass, sliding through unexpected and mainly unnoticed massive cow pats, being attacked by insane midges determined to rid the world – or at least that patch of it – of all human “invaders”, claiming it on behalf of all manic midges everywhere!

Then one day, courtesy of the lottery, we discovered we could actually achieve our dream. Dream – or nightmare?

When we stopped (or in my case staggered) into a local pub, everyone drank beer – except yea, you’ve got it – ME! Not wanting to stand out as a sissy, I ordered half a pint of whatever it was the others were slurping. It tasted like cat’s pee. (It was a pretty colour though!)

74

Needless to say the experience was never to be repeated, and the boorish bore of a boyfriend didn’t even last as long as the journey home!

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2015

Having hugely enjoyed a few days here and there in a rented static caravan at South Cerney, we always wished we had one of our own. Well laid out, warm and comfortable and with more storage space than our house, we had a pitch by the river and wildlife enough to satisfy David Attenborough. It was sheer bliss.

We are on our second motorhome now, having learned the ups and downs, pitfalls and delights And pro’s and cons of motorhoming with our first van, which we sold less than a year later. The first van suffered from “thrombosis” – it was owned by two clots who hadn’t a clue what they were doing, but it was invaluable at turning two amateurs into two travellers who knew what they were doing. (Well, more or less!!!) It was a 4 berth, which meant two could sleep above the driver/passenger seats, and the settee at each side

Jo Deacon of the mobile table turned into a double bed. It was like putting a jigsaw together each night and climbing over poor Fred to get to the toilet was dangerous if he was asleep, for him I mean not for me! The blood curdling yells issuing from our van in the wee small hours must’ve made nearby van inhabitants wonder if I was castrating him with blunt secateurs. What was actually taking place was my elbow slipping across the duvet and coming to a halt only when a tender part of Fred’s anatomy got in its way. We didn’t use the over-cab sleeping space. For one thing I would surely have fallen out, and for another thing I only climbed up the first three steps of the little ladder leading to it, got vertigo, and had to come back down quick! With the new van, the two seats facing each other just pull out – and there’s your bed and it is sooooo comfortable you just don’t want to get up. But if it isn’t one of our bladders – it’s the dogs, so one way or another Nature gets us up. Damn and blast! The “fun” part of having a motorhome is the waste disposal. The toilet empties into what’s called a “cassett” and it’s quite usual to see the men on the camp striding manfully across the grass to the disposal points, great plastic tanks clutched to their chests. Definitely a man’s job that one!

Washing up and face washing water also has disposal points enabling a van to be driven home pristine, clean and empty, which is a blessing. Now and then, you will hear camper “virgins” in a bit of a flap and it gives you a giggle, like for instance when the male has just removed the cassett and his partner decides she can’t wait another minute and absolutely MUST “go.” The anguished cry, “For God’s sake – NOT NOW!” echoes round the little group of vans within hearing distance, and for a good five minutes the smothered giggles can be heard on the air. Most of us, as novices, have done that if we’re honest. There are only two types of motorhome owners though. Those who love it, and those who loathe it. There’s no middle ground. We belong to the former group. Although the washroom in our first van was so tiny you couldn’t put your knickers on without bruising your elbows and the bed was like putting a jigsaw together every night, somehow it “grabbed us” and now we have the van we adore, we are comfy, warm, and completely in love with our little “Wendy House” on wheels. Happy New Year Everyone. Maybe we’ll see you on a site somewhere!

A New Year

W

ell, another year has ended and another begins. I shan’t review the year for us, everywhere we look in papers, television or radio, the media attempts to sum up the year gone by. 2014 has had it all: a Winter Olympics in Russia, followed by pro-Russian separatists threatening the stability of Ukraine, followed by a Malaysian airliner being shot down in the skies above Ukraine; the prominence of Islamic State bringing unspeakable terror to the world in a bid to establish a Caliphate; an Ebola outbreak that continues to scare us; deadly tit for tat missiles in Gaza; and of course another world cup not won by England. All a bit depressing. Will any of us stay up to see in the New Year? It’s said, “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” Edith Lovejoy Pierce, the English poet and pacifist naturalised in America, wrote this: “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” A New Year provides an opportunity for us to start afresh In the Christian calendar, the first Scripture that greets us is the naming and circumcision of Jesus. ‘Jesus’ is the Aramaic for the Hebrew name ‘Joshua’ and ‘Joshua’ means ‘Saviour’. Joseph was told in a dream to give the boy the name Jesus. Not only did Joseph have the humility to accept God’s Son as His own, he also gave up the right to name Him. Jesus, the Saviour, came with a promise to save us. The threshold of a New Year invites us to assess where we stand with Jesus. Are we living every day, with a thankful heart for His salvation? Have we drifted a little? Have we forgotten His promises? Do we know how precious each day is?

In a 24 hour period, an adult of average weight, accomplishes 103,689 heart beats, 23,040 breaths, 4,800 words spoken, 750 muscles moved 0.000046 inch of finger nails growth, 0.01714 inch growth of hair, 168,000,000 miles of blood travelling around our bodies and 7,000,000 brain cells exercised. It’s exhausting, no wonder we feel tired at the end of a day. But in a day, what do we accomplish for the Kingdom God? What do we do to demonstrate that Jesus is indeed our Saviour? GK Chesterton said, “The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul”. A soul that is cleansed, renewed, refreshed and willing to join in with the work of God Kingdom. The hymn writer (and Vicar’s daughter), Frances R. Havergal, who wrote the hymn “take my life and let it be”, also wrote these words concerning New Year and they resonate for us today.

Another year is dawning, Dear Father let it be, In working or in waiting, Another year with thee. Another year of progress, Another year of praise, Another year of proving Thy presence all the days. Another year of mercies, Of faithfulness and grace, Another year of gladness, The glory of thy face. Another year of leaning Upon thy loving breast, Another year of trusting, Of quiet, happy rest. Another year of service, Of witness for thy love, Another year of training For holier work above. Another year is dawning, Dear Father, let it be, On earth, or else in heaven, Another year for thee. Gardening

by Lee Bestall

Seeds of change How many seeds have you eaten today? Probably more than you realise. As a nation, we consume tons of them every day and whether they are ground to make our bread, mushed to accompany our chips or sprinkled on our burger bun, seeds play an important role in our diet … as well as in our garden!

really was a miracle. They germinated! It was hard to believe that the old seed, uneven layer of compost, wardrobe location and over watered soil, produced a rash of new seedlings. It wasn’t long before they had grown to around 2 inches high and bent towards the light, narrowly avoiding the artex ceiling!

Most of the seed heads that were left over from autumn have now fallen over, disintegrated, or been eaten by hungry birds, so as part of my ‘outdoor housework’ I’m cutting them down to ground level before the new growth begins to emerge next month. The stately seed heads of Stipa gigantea looked fantastic for such a long period of time, as did the erect stems of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’, but even these have been defeated by the wind.

I potted them on and they produced the most beautiful range of colours all summer long, and that was the moment I became hooked on gardening.

It may be cold outside, but now is the perfect time for planning what to grow this year, from seed of course! Over recent years the popularity of growing your own vegetables has meant that veg seed sales have overtaken those of traditional flowers, but you really can’t beat the satisfaction of plants from seed. The first plants I ever grew were Snap Dragons. I was fifteen, and I found the packet in the back of a drawer (presumably they had been stuck to a box of cereal at some stage). I diligently followed the instructions for sowing and placed them on top of my wardrobe (I’m not quite sure why I did that). What happened next

80

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2015

It wasn’t really a surprise that they germinated, as that’s what seeds are designed to do. They can survive in their dormant state for years, and because there are often more seeds per packet than you know what to do with, I always sow just a few more than I need and return the rest to a sealed container in the fridge. Stored like this they keep for years. To give them the best start in life, most seeds require just a tray of compost and some warmth. Large seeds should be covered over with compost, but small seeds left uncovered as they often don’t have enough energy to push new leaves through the soil. Prick out singly once large enough to handle and grow on somewhere frost-free, before gradually hardening off ready for life outdoors.

!

Happy winter gardening

The Green Garden! Install big water butts - Save as much rainwater as possible and deploy it with care. Water generously only where it’s needed, in the cool of the evening, to encourage deeper rooting. Mulch well. Right plant, right place - For free-draining soil don’t plant thirsty plants which require a lot of water. If it’s clay, choose deep-rooted, strong plants, like roses and hardy fuchsias, which will withstand dry periods where the ground bakes. If an established plant can’t survive on its own, it’s probably not the right plant for your plot. Ban peat - Peat bogs are an essential part of our eco system. Once they’re gone they’re gone forever. There is no excuse for buying peat-based products… ever. Use only peat-free composts, soil-improvers and mulches. Recycle. Recycle. Recycle - Make a compost heap or buy a compost bin. Re-use plastic and crock pots. String old cds and bottle tops over newly planted seedlings as bird scarers.

Technology

Mobile Safety Phone security is a serious issue Nowadays it’s probably more worrying if someone steals your phone than your purse because of the amount of data stored on it: bank, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon accounts, are the tip of the iceberg. Your first line of defence is to make it hard for thieves to get into the phone. Make sure you’ve got your phone lock turned on so that they have to enter your password. If you’re using a pattern or pin code to unlock the phone make sure it’s not something simple like 1234 or a rectangle. SIM cards can be switched to another phone and used to run up bills of thousands of pounds. Notify your provider as soon as you realise your phone is missing. A delay may mean that you incur unnecessary charges. Although phone companies are being exhorted to cap the amount of liability a customer incurs if their phone is misused, at the time of writing this is not commonplace. Make sure your SIM is locked, as well as your handset, and check with your provider to see if you can voluntarily place a cap on your usage; that way, the phone will cut out once the limit is reached. Switch your location service on. Your phone will then be able to tell you where it is. Apple, Android and other major systems all have online phone location websites. You can locate and lock the phone, make it ring or even wipe it. Mobile phones, like laptops are open to hackers. In general phones are more secure from virus attacks, but you still need to be wary of criminals. Virus attacks on phones mostly occur via dodgy apps. Apple are very strict about what is allowed into iTunes so virus protection isn’t an issue. On Android devices you need to be more careful. Read reviews carefully and check the permissions the app requests when you install it. If it’s a simple app asking for full access to your phone, it should ring alarm bells. If in doubt don’t install. Most of the major security companies produce Android apps to give you an extra level of security. Install one of these to give you extra peace of mind. 84

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2015

Remember, when your phone connects to a Wi-Fi hotspot all the information it sends and receives passes through the computer controlling that hotspot. Always be aware of who owns the hotspot and how much you trust them. Most data, like bank logins and other major services, are highly encrypted so they can’t be stolen. However, other websites you use will not be as secure and may allow your login details to be hi-jacked. Check that the website or app you are using is secure (look for a little padlock icon) before you type in your details, especially card details. If in any doubt, don’t use it. Phone security is mostly about being aware of the problem and using common sense. If you follow the steps above, then even if you do lose your phone, it shouldn’t cause you any serious issues.

5 Tips to get your Website into Shape This New Year why not take the opportunity to get your website into shape, and make sure it’s ready for the next 12 months. Here are 5 quick things you can do to make sure your website is in good health and ready to serve your business. 1. Change the copyright date

Many websites have a copyright date in the footer. To make sure you look current and up to date don’t forget to update it. You can just list the current years date, or a time span such as ‘copyright 2014-2015’.

3. Update any advice or policies

2. Add a news item or blog post

A high level of activity on a website can make all the difference to a new customer. If it looks like the website is no longer in use they may get the impression you’re no longer in business and decide to shop elsewhere. A great way to show you’re still active is to add a blog post or a news article. As these usually carry a date on them it’s the perfect visual indicator that you’re still around - even if what you post doesn’t get read. If you don’t have a blog on your site how about posting a little ‘Happy New Year’ message on your homepage, or a special offer for the first 20 customers in 2015.

Many professional sites dispense policies or other advice. Take a look through all your documents or articles and make sure the information is still correct. If there is any new legislation or there’s been a change to industry standards make sure your site falls in line with these.

4. Re-read your content

It’s not just policies or advice that go out of date. Take the opportunity to give your whole site a thorough proof-read. Try to take a step back and look at it from a customer’s point of view. Are you giving enough information, do things make sense and has anything changed that’s not been updated on the website? If you have too many pages to trawl through pick some of the top visited pages and start with them. Regularly updated websites are likely to rank higher in search engines too, so it’s a good idea to keep things fresh throughout the year.

5. Double check your images

Everything you need to get your business online for a fixed monthly amount. Friendly local web designer for hire. I will work with you and take care of everything, including: • PLANNING • DESIGN • BUILDING • MAINTENANCE • HOSTING

Often overlooked, the imagery used on a website is usually what a readers first impressions are based on. It can quickly help them decide if the page they’re looking at is relevant to what they’re after. Make sure your images reflect the subject of the page, and where possible try to use images of your company rather than stock photo’s. It might be that you decided to use a generic image when setting up the website, thinking that you’d replace it later down the line. If that’ something that has been forgotten now’s the time to sort it out.

These tips are good to keep in mind and run through every now and then. The more often you do the less work you’ll have to do each time. Keeping your website fresh is great for your customers, good for Google and is never time wasted. Happy New Year!
