Pregnancy is a time of joy and anticipation, but preparing for a new baby can also bring stress and worry. That’s especially true when dealing with complicated health issues. In October 2017, while pregnant with their second daughter, Emily, Lauren and Tim Simon faced every parent’s worst nightmare: Their baby’s heart was not developing correctly. They were referred to the Fetal Care Institute at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. It was the beginning of a journey of care and support for the entire Simon family, and now, five years later, Emily is a happy 4-year-old who enjoys dancing, playing and going to school.

At 24 weeks, Emily was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a congenital heart defect where the left side of the heart does not form correctly. “It was a lot to take in, but everyone at Cardinal Glennon was very comforting, especially during the pregnancy when so much was unknown,” Lauren says. “Doctors spent hours explaining things and going over plans for what would happen next. We weren’t just told what was going to be done—we were given an active role in deciding on her care.”

To treat her heart defect, Emily has had three open heart surgeries and five cardiac catheters placed. It’s a lot for any person to undergo, especially a young

child, but Tim says the doctors, nurses and staff at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon have always made his daughter feel comfortable. “The last time we went in for surgery, Emily was skipping on her way into the building,” he notes. “Everyone at the hospital goes out of their way to get to know her, so she’s happy about visiting.” One of Emily’s favorite things about going to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon is getting to spend time with Duo Dog Thor, the hospital’s facility dog. During her last overnight stay for cardiac catheterization, Thor was unable to visit. However, hospital staff left a special coloring book and note from the pooch for Emily. “It made her feel like the most special person in the world,” Tim says.

Emily isn’t the only member of their family who receives care and attention from the hospital’s staff. “They always ask about our other daughters,” Lauren says. “While they know Emily the best, they help all of our girls feel involved in the experience, which is really important to us as a family.” The Simons work to pay SSM Health Cardinal Glennon back for the support they’ve received. Both Tim and Lauren serve on the Patient Family Advisory Committee to share their perspective. Tim also provides a patient’s standpoint on the hospital’s ethics committee, and Lauren is helping establish a mentoring program for patients.

To ensure SSM Health Cardinal Glennon can provide the treatment and support that families like the Simons need, the hospital relies on generous community partners and innovative fundraisers. One of its major initiatives is the Glennon Card, a discount shopping program that allows St. Louisans to help ensure that the hospital never has to turn away a child for care. Each fall, the purchase of a $60 card unlocks a 20% discount at more than 320 retailers, eateries and attractions, and 100% of card sales benefit the hospital. The program is organized by the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation and the Glennon Guild, a women’s auxiliary.

This year’s Glennon Card shopping period runs from Oct. 14 to 23. Cards are available in paper and digital forms at glennoncard.org or can be purchased at select retail locations. “I enjoy Glennon Card so much,” Lauren says. “We’ve discovered a lot of local shops and restaurants through the program. You’re not only giving back to the hospital—you’re also supporting the community, which is really cool.” Tim adds the family likes to take advantage of the discount to get ahead on holiday shopping or cover annual purchases like tennis shoes and winter coats for their girls. “Everything about Glennon Card is St. Louis forward—from helping local kids to working with local businesses,” he notes. “There’s no downside.”

Over the years, the funds raised by Glennon Card have been used to support initiatives like 3D printing technology, the Danis Pediatric Center, the hospital’s Milk Lab and other advancements to improve patient care and experience. The Simons are deeply appreciative of all the work that has been done to ensure that SSM Health Cardinal Glennon can best serve its young patients. “We’re both from St. Louis, and even though we’ve lived here our entire lives, we knew nothing about Cardinal Glennon until we needed it,” Lauren says. “It’s such a valuable place for St. Louis, and it reaches so many people in our community. We want to shine a spotlight on the good work being done there.” &

Last month, the United Way of Greater St. Louis kicked off its 100th annual campaign. Running through November, the fundraiser will raise funds to support more than 160 local nonprofits. In its 100-year history, the organization has raised almost $3 billion to support the St. Louis community.

Starbucks baristas or other employees who work at the area’s busiest store— Clayton and Lindbergh in the plaza where the late, lamented Schneithorst’s Restaurant used to be—are mad as hell and hope they don’t have to take it for much longer. Right as the store manager opened Sept. 24, the crew told him they were taking the day off for a one-day “strike”—that’s in quotation marks because workers at this store are not in a union. But they’d sure like to be, even though unionized Starbucks employees may earn $3 less per hour than non-union employees. My friend Paul (not his real name) had worked at the Ladue store between high-powered sales positions. As Paul papered the Midwest with resumes, he and Georgette had a toddler; Starbucks turned out to be a great gig for a family—for a while. But if Georgette had chosen to work, it would have been a heavy lift for the couple to afford suitable daycare. That isn’t a problem anymore, since Georgette stays home with the little boy and Paul landed an enviable, career-oriented job in medical equipment sales, not to mention he’s honing his invention of a new surgical device. He’s grateful for the time he spent at the world’s largest coffee shop. But that was back in the day when he was among a dozen workers. Another major worker complaint is two-pronged: Starbucks has reduced staffers by about a third and cut hours. This is just another egregious example of a huge corporation taking advantage of low-wage workers, just because they can.

The historic Lyceum building, built in 1894, is the focal point of the City of Manchester and has served as its city hall since 1979. It’s so distinctive that it’s central to the city’s logo. On the National Register of Historic Places, the iconic two-story gray-and-white Lyceum sits just west of Hwy. 141 and Woods Mill Road, on the south side of, natch, Manchester Road. You’ve probably seen it, maybe marveled at its beauty, while stuck in traffic on the way to Ballwin and back. But it’s become too cramped, even for this smallish suburb of 18,000. The city administration plans to move down the pike a bit into a former Commerce Bank building. The Lyceum started its 19th century service as a tin shop—with a dance hall upstairs. No fooling. The building had many incarnations after the tin shop shuttered, and it served during the last century (the 20th!?) as most everything including a soda shop, movie theater and hardware store, becoming vacant in 1975. The lovely vintage tin ceilings remain. But there’s no elevator for disabled residents, and the Victorian-era windows are, let’s say, quaint. That is, expensive to maintain. Parking is not ideal. This poses an array of problems for the building’s potential uses in the future. Regular readers of this column know that your favorite reporter is fond of roller-disco conversions, as he has proposed for another vacant dinosaur, Chesterfield Mall—hey, boomer! We could even call it 64 West, for old times’ sake. Regardless, whether the Lyceum stays put or has to be moved, the city has its work cut out for it.

Hey, all you kids in Pioneer Land! Thanks to a new state law, your school district has banned 14 books this fall, so you won’t be able to find them in Kirkwood school libraries anymore. Some students, parents and Kirkwood school officials protested the ban, which doesn’t reach the numbers banned in other metro districts: Francis Howell, St. Charles County—41; Rockwood—22, Lindbergh—17. Close neighbor Webster Groves banned 12. They aren’t books banned by other districts either, namely The Bluest Eye, Maus or To Kill a Mockingbird. Well, young person, you budding lifelong learner … what’s a well-rounded self-starter to do? First, of course, you must find the list. You’re resourceful, and know plenty about finding stuff your parents, or state legislators who arbitrarily pass draconian laws, don’t want you to see. For each book, there’s plenty of information somewhere on the internet. (Of course, we’re not telling you anything you don’t already know.) Throughout the metro, banned books confront racism or deal with topics like gender identity and sexual violence—topics that appear regularly in major media, from TV news and our esteemed metro daily to The New York Times and Washington Post. Those who would ban select books say it’s up to parents, not educators, to broach certain subjects. Have the people who would label Pulitzer Prize-winners as pornographic even read these books, or just cherry-picked passages? For instance, does a child prefer for others to use they/them pronouns, rather than he/him or she/her? Perhaps they’re gay. Could mom and/or dad change that by keeping the kid away from a book titled Gender Queer, or might such a book help a confused young person clarify their personal identity? We have more questions than answers, and we’re going to keep asking them.

The animated kids TV show Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is based on none other than the beloved long-running educational show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, starring the avuncular Fred Rogers and his cardigan sweaters. The series Misterogers debuted in Canada in 1962. Rogers’ PBS vehicle ran until 2001 south of the border.

Vanessa Roman, who grew up a few blocks from Blueberry Hill, has a deep affection for Oscar Wilde. No, that’s not a nonsequitur. Roman regularly played competitive darts at Blueberry Hill. In the league, she found friendship and eventually love, connecting with her husband. John has been one of Blueberry Hill’s kitchen managers for years and is a pretty good darts player, as well. “Once I was intrigued, I started playing all the time,” she says, although circumspect about whether by ‘intrigued’ she means the man, the pub sport or both. Roman’s first feature film, Doubting Tom, is a romantic comedy. It features autobiographical elements, but she emphasizes that it’s fiction, pure and simple. Her rom-com uncovers secrets and ‘white’ lies that precipitate the breakup of characters Tom and Gwen, meanwhile focusing on shenanigans that ensue at Blueberry Hill and several other locations on The Delmar Loop. And as she was writing the screenplay, she found herself unable to resist refreshing Wilde’s play The Importance of Being Earnest and setting it at her beloved hangout—see, we

told you it all connects. Wilde has been a touchpoint for her creativity. She says, tongue firmly in cheek, that Wilde once popped up on her shoulder to suggest that the play could do with an update. (But while in Paris, she didn’t even kiss his monument! Covered in fading lipstick kisses, Oscar Wilde’s tomb in Père Lachaise Cemetery is now protected by a plexiglass enclosure.) This isn’t a movie solely for the Pokémon and craft-beer generation. Roman cast couples of various ages and mixed in their love stories, so: Hey, boomer—you, too, can relate! A graduate of Webster University with a double major in film and English—both parents are English professors; her father at Wash U, her mother at SIUE—it was almost in Roman’s DNA to become a woman of letters, plus an actor, theater director and filmmaker. In 2010, her short film Playing Dead, a horror movie that featured her daughter Marissa, then 12, was shown at film festivals here, throughout the States and in Toronto and earned Marissa the Best Juvenile Actor award at the St. Louis Film Festival. So, what about Wilde’s play?

Earnest is about a man who lives two lives, essentially, he’s a different person in the city than he is in the country.

“People like to reinvent themselves,” says Roman, which is where pub darts comes in. Competitors who come closest to the bullseye more often than most players are respected as “dart gods,” she says. While not a facade, it makes up somewhat for the boring, mundane lives they may lead at work. Perhaps they’re just another employee at a ho-hum gig in one of dozens of cubicles. But they’re noble competitors after hours, and may even be in the pantheon.

SAY SORRY

IS IT TOO LATE NOW TO SAY SORRY? No, that’s not just a line from one of my favorite Justin Bieber songs. It’s a question many of us probably find ourselves asking at some point. I believe the answer is no—it’s never too late for an apology, especially when it comes to your children. Even if you have a reason to be upset, even if they’re older now, even if the relationship is strained, it’s not too late to say sorry for your mess ups. I say it almost every day.

Parenting is one one the hardest things to do on the planet, and I’m still just getting started. How can we ever get it all right? Parents often expect themselves to be perfect. Why? We don’t expect our kids to be perfect. Sometimes, we need to extend ourselves the same patience and understanding we give them.

So yes, we mess up, say things we don’t mean and miss important events. As terrible as it is, sometimes, we hurt our kids feelings … and we need to say sorry when we do. In doing so, we teach our kids to do the same as well as how to forgive. Saying sorry and taking accountability when you’re in the wrong, helps you build a stronger family—a family that lets each other be human and fallible.

When interviewed, many teenagers said that the No. 1 thing they wanted from their parents was just for them to admit when they’re wrong. As my almost 10-year-old likes to

act like a teenager already, I’m taking note. The parent-child relationship is just that, a relationship. While it may not look like every other one in our lives, it still needs to be built on trust, and we can’t truly trust people who don’t hold themselves accountable when they do something wrong.

Being open and honest when you mess up will strengthen your bond with your child. While you may be worried it could compromise your authority, the thing that actually is damaging your relationship is when you avoid apologizing. A strong relationship between parents and children is one where both can admit when they are wrong, apologize and forgive. That’s something I’m so grateful to my parents for doing with my siblings and me.

So I’m practicing saying sorry when I’m wrong and hoping my kids will grow up to do the same. As parents, we’re always growing and learning, and this is my lesson for this month.

WHEN

they’re prevented from finding themselves, their path and their own happiness. Most parents aren’t aware when they cross the line, so let me give some examples of how an enmeshed relationship might look.

Sam becomes extremely worried every time he must make an important decision. His fear that he will disappoint his parents causes him to let them decide, and his parents have been all too willing to solve Sam’s problems and make decisions for him. The result is Sam being overly dependent on his parents and other adults.

Sofia’s mom has been depressed and lonely for years and has turned to her daughter as her confidant and therapist. Being 16 brings more than enough challenges, including the normal emotional ups and downs of adolescence, but Sofia feels responsible for her mom’s happiness. She is often overwhelmed by dealing with her mom’s feelings along with her own emotions and problems.

Lucy has been pulled into arguments between her parents for years and hates it when they both confide in her and badmouth the other. She wishes they would vent to another adult instead of her.

Jake’s single mom has become dependent on him to shop, make meals, do the laundry and take care of three younger siblings. Thus, Jake’s mom won’t allow him to look into attending college out of state because she doesn’t know what she would do without him.

Abby’s mom has gotten involved in all of her friendships and dating relationships for years. Her mom reads all her texts, social media posts and even her journal entries. Abby feels controlled, smothered and angry.

Most parents lack awareness about their own mental health issues and the ways they have become overly dependent and involved in their children’s lives. There are usually underlying subconscious reasons caused by unresolved issues from their childhood or adult life that explain why parents behave in these ways. But these emotions and issues don’t belong in their relationship with their kids.

Kids need to understand why their parents act the way they do so they don’t take it personally or shoulder responsibility for their parent’s feelings, mental health or happiness. It is critical that they learn to believe that their parent’s behaviors are not about them. And it’s important that children have adults to talk to for a healthy perspective about what they are experiencing. This could be a friend’s parents, a counselor or a relative who can take them under their wing and support them.

To become who they are meant to be, kids need space—not to be shackled with their parent’s baggage. They need safe spaces to find themselves, make choices, solve their own problems, make mistakes and follow their own path to create their own destiny. Counseling and support from healthy adults can allow children to break unhealthy family cycles and create healthy relationships with friends and romantic relationships. &

AVA YU OF NERINX HALL

MAKING THE TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL can be a big challenge, but it’s one Ava Yu has been happy to tackle. During her freshman year at Nerinx Hall, she took on student council, theater and mock trial. Now a sophomore, she’s even more dedicated to making the most of her high school experience.

Where did your interest in theater come from?

I started when I was in sixth grade. Two of my closest friends were a part of the Lindbergh School District musical. I wanted to be involved, so I signed up for a stage managing position. That was a pretty crazy production. Kids from all over the district were involved—from preschool to high school. I’ve always been a very organized person, so it was nice to put my energy into the technical side of the show.

Do you have any favorite productions?

Last year, I stage managed my school’s fall musical, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. I think I may have been the first freshman to manage a show. It was a bit of a struggle at first since I had only been at Nerinx for a couple months, but there were some great upperclassmen that showed me the ropes. That was one of my favorite productions. I was sad to see that show close. This fall, I’m the assistant stage manager for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. It’s a fun show, and I’m looking forward to all the freshmen who will be joining our little theater community.

Why did you decide to get involved with student government?

Nerinx really believes in pushing students to take on leadership positions. Some older friends recommended I go out for student council because it would be a good opportunity, and even if I didn’t win, campaigning would be fun. I chose to try for treasurer, and

my mom, aunt and I worked on creating posters and buttons that I passed out at school. If you had told middle school me that I would run for student council, I would have thought you were crazy. It definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I got a lot of encouragement from my friends, teachers and family.

What do you enjoy most about student government?

I love brainstorming events with my fellow officers. After all the planning and email exchanges, I really do enjoy seeing my classmates enjoying something I put my time and energy into.

Are you involved in any other activities?

I’m on the mock trial team. Like most of my extracurriculars, I got involved because my upperclassman friends recommended it. I’m not involved in sports, so this is how I let out my competitive side. Alumni who are lawyers come in and coach us. I really enjoy meeting people who just a couple years ago were in the same position I am.

What do you enjoy most about Nerinx?

I never imagined myself going to all-girls private school, but Nerinx has become like a second home. I’ve met so many great people, and I love its mission to empower young women. I spend a lot of time at school since I go in early for mock trial practice and stay late for rehearsals, but I love high school so far. &

FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS, the pandemic has dictated how we live our everyday lives. While the uncertainty and isolation can be difficult for adults, it presents an even bigger obstacle for children. “There has been so much restriction and distance,” notes Alissa Rowan, drama teacher at Community School. “Kids are hungry to connect and collaborate.” The independent elementary school and preschool is dedicated to fostering the intellectual, emotional and creative development in students age 3 through grade six. Its drama program is just one example of how the school works to support social and emotional growth and learning.

Taylor Mata, school counselor at Community School, works with every grade level. Along with facilitating group or individual counseling as needed, she visits classrooms to provide character-centered lessons. These lessons are reinforced through initiatives like Counselor’s Corner and Community Reads. “We create Counselor’s Corner videos based on concepts like anxiety, healthy friendships and kindness that are shared with the whole school,” Mata explains. “I also work with the librarian to choose books that deal with these issues, and we develop follow-up questions for teachers to start discussions in the classroom.” The videos are created in partnership with Rowan, who writes scripts that are performed by both students and faculty.

Mata and Rowan’s collaboration extends into the drama program. They work together to create productions that authentically reflect what students are experiencing. The plays are different every year, so they are relevant to the students who are performing, and each grade participates in the program. “Here at Community, drama is project-based,” Rowan says. “In their fall play, first-graders can work through issues like social skills and emotional expression. In Diary of a

Fourth-Grader, fourth-graders are more involved in the scripting process, sharing their challenges and empathizing with others. Students help with all aspects of production, so they feel a real sense of leadership and ownership of these plays.”

With every student given the opportunity to perform, Community School creates a safe, supportive environment where they can creatively express themselves. Families can see the difference the drama program makes for their children. Drs. Amy Hilmer and Mauricio Sanchez say participating in productions has helped their daughter Johanna build important skills and become more confident. “Drama has been a special part of our child’s Community School experience,” they note. “Alissa Rowan’s plays have allowed Johanna to access her authentic self and build a foundation of self-confidence. We are very grateful for Community School’s commitment to supporting emotional growth through drama.”

The drama program is just one way in which Community School allows staff and students to come together as a community while working collaboratively. Not only do Rowan and Mata work together to create plays that reflect student experiences, but students are encouraged to bring their input and creativity to the process. Throughout the year, the entire school community comes together to enjoy the performances of every grade. “Community School is dedicated to helping our students develop as confident leaders who look for solutions that bring people together,” head of school Bob Cooke says. “The integration of life skills and character development in the drama program is a perfect example of that.” &

HOW DID YOUR PARTNERSHIP BEGIN?

Nancy Apel (NA): I was working for a manufacturer at the time, and Marcy was with another dealership. Through numerous conversations, we discussed what we felt was missing in the market. Both of us wanted to create something unique and out-of-the-box. With our combined passion, we felt that we could do this. It started out with more of a boutique feel, but it grew into something much bigger.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE WORKING SPACES WOULD SUCCEED? Marcy Handlan (MH): We never thought twice. We have like-minded goals for delivering an exceptional client experience, and we knew that about each other when we started. That was really the basis for delivering the experience that we have since 1999.

NA: We had so many people along the way asking if we knew what we were doing. We would look at each other and wonder why we weren’t scared. I think when you have so much passion for what you’re doing, it doesn’t even occur to you to rethink things. It was always full speed ahead.

SINCE THE PANDEMIC, MANY COMPANIES HAVE TWEAKED HOW THEY DO BUSINESS. HOW HAS THAT IMPACTED YOU?

NA: The supply chain has been the biggest hurdle. We don’t have any control over it—nobody in our industry does. It’s about finding ways to work around delays, keep ahead of problems and stay proactive. You just have to remain passionate. In our business, no two days are the same. This is a new challenge, but that’s what makes it exciting and interesting.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL FOR BUSINESS?

MH: I don’t know if I have a favorite place. Every market is different, and it’s exciting to visit each one. Traveling to different locations, you feel the energy of each group and realize the importance of everyone coming together as one company and culture. I think we took that for granted before, but the pandemic has shown how important that is.

GIVE ME YOUR GO-TO RESTAURANTS AROUND ST. LOUIS.

NA: A lunch favorite is BrickTop’s.

MH: I have a husband who’s a chef as a hobby, so there aren’t a lot of dinners out, but I’ve become a breakfast person. My top spots are The Clover and the Bee, Yolklore, Bowood and Living Room.

WHAT’S THE BEST KEPT SECRET ABOUT WORKING SPACES?

NA: It may not be a secret, but we have an unbelievable team. We’re all about our culture. Even though we’ve continued to grow, what’s most important to us is our people. We care about each other, celebrate together and support one another during difficult times. That’s the formula that works for us.

MH: Throughout our history, we’ve faced unprecedented challenges, but we’ve always come out the other side stronger. That is a testament to our team. Everyone here wants to be a part of Working Spaces. I truly believe it starts at the top, so every single day, Nancy and I roll up ourselves and start problem solving. We’re in the trenches with everyone else. I think that’s something not everyone realizes.

Fall is a good time to reset by giving your skin some extra love. With a little help, you can keep your complexion youthful and healthy. A thoughtfully designed skin care regimen can tackle the signs of aging, sun damage and other issues, according to Jackie Carr, R.N., ANP-BC, LE, owner of Pur-One Medispa in Des Peres.

According to Carr, early fall is a great time for procedures that get your skin ready for the busy holiday season. Two treatments she recommends are microneedling and VI Peel, a medical-grade chemical peel. “These are great ways to boost your skin and help resolve superficial hyperpigmentation,” she explains. “They also improve the tone and texture of the skin. Treatments can be performed at four-week intervals. To achieve the best results, alternate between the two.” For people who are looking for rejuvenation that requires little to no maintenance or downtime, she suggests HydraFacial to gently exfoliate and hydrate the skin.

A common problem patients bring to Carr is dynamic perioral rhytids. The condition refers to the vertical lines that form around the mouth with age. “Many women call them ‘smoker lines,’ but smoking is not always the cause,” Carr notes. “During the aging process we lose bone and fat causing the lips to develop fine lines and wrinkles.”

RHA Redensity and Vobella are fine dermal fillers that have been approved to smooth out those lines, helping create a more youthful appearance.

The eye drop stimulates the Muller muscle to create a contraction that elevates the lid. She also is looking forward to DAXXIFY (DaxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm) by Revance, which was recently approved. “The new botulinum toxin will be available soon for the treatment of lines and wrinkles between the brows,” she notes. “This particular product is approved for frown lines, and it is indicated to last for six to nine months.”

Carr’s daughter, Courtney Carr, is now a licensed esthetician. FACE IT: Common Cosmetic Procedures

Your face is the first thing others notice about you, so it’s important that it makes the right impression. But sometimes, all it takes is a slight imperfection to zap our confidence and make it difficult to put our best face forward. Whether it’s something that has always bothered you or a new issue that has arisen with age, there are steps you can take to address any problem. We talked with local experts about two common cosmetic treatments for the face.

RHINOPLASTY

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, rhinoplasty is the most common surgical cosmetic procedure in America with more than 350,000 performed in 2020. Dr. Mike Nayak of Nayak Plastic Surgeon says that the procedure is performed for two reasons: function and aesthetics. “A functional rhinoplasty improves the airway to correct nasal obstruction,” he explains. “When it comes to aesthetics, the procedure can be done to alter the appearance of the nose in a variety of ways, such as lifting a drooping tip or straightening the bridge.” He adds rhinoplasty cannot correct sinusitis or other sinus issues, although they can be treated with a different surgery.

Most people have incorrect assumptions about the structure of the nose as it relates to rhinoplasty, according to Nayak.

“It is not a solid structure that you can just whittle away imperfections from,” he says. “It’s more of a tent-like structure, so the approach is rebuilding and repositioning the framework.” For cosmetic rhinoplasty there are two main approaches: structural and preservation. The former focuses on rebuilding the structure of the nose, while the latter works to preserve it. Nayak notes that while he prefers a preservation approach, there are times when structural will better meet a patient’s needs.

Nayak suggests considering architecture to understand the difference between the two. “Imagine the Chrysler Building in New York City—in a structural approach, if you wanted to shorten it, you would remove the excess height from the top,” he explains. “The problem is that the building no longer looks like the Chrysler Building because you’ve removed some iconic features. You have to use other materials to rebuild as best you can, but you’re never going to get it exactly the same. However, if the structure is damaged or you don’t want to preserve it, rebuilding may be the best course of action. The preservation approach is different. Imagine instead that you cut a chunk out of the lower portion of the building. It leaves the iconic top intact and preserves the original structure while shortening the building.”

LIP INJECTIONS

When it comes to concerns about lips, most people are looking for more volume, according to Jackie Carr, R.N., ANP-BC, LE, owner of Pur-One Medispa in Des Peres. Results are usually achieved using dermal fillers, but she stresses the importance of understanding your own facial structure before receiving treatment. “Thin lips do not always want to hold onto dermal filler or may require multiple injections to achieve a fuller appearance,” she notes. “Furthermore, the frame of your face is important to assess. Large lips may appear out of place on a smaller face. Sometimes, a patient gets the lips augmented and has a difficult time gauging if there is still filler present. It becomes their new norm, and they want to continuously place more product.”

Along with adding volume, dermal fillers can be used to treat fine lines that form around the lips. “Lip wrinkles are a common complaint from women, and it tends to ramp up once menopause occurs,” Carr explains. “Fat pads and the bone structure that provides support to the lips start to atrophy with age. That lack of support results in line formation.” Until recently, there were limited options to treat these winkles. “Placing filler in this area could create an unnatural ‘mound’ effect,” she says. “Two newer types of injectable filler, Volbella and Redensity, have been made to address lip lines while maintaining a natural appearance without any unwanted heaviness.”

As with any injection, it’s important to consult with your provider before receiving dermal filler in the  lips. Carr notes that swelling and bruising are always potential side effects, and other factors can affect recovery. Taking anti-inflammatory supplements can result in increased bleeding and bruising after the procedure, and patients with a history of cold sores may experience skin irritation that triggers an outbreak. Both negative outcomes can be avoided by taking the proper steps, according to Carr. She also recommends that people be prepared for multiple small injections. “Treating the lips slowly over time can create a more natural appearance without overfilling,” she says. “Less is more! A natural and slightly enhanced lip is becoming more desirable in the world of aesthetics.”

The house is on a quiet street that is only one block long, so there is little traffic. There are so many trees—they create a canopy on both sides of the street. The location is wonderful. It’s very close to Forest Park, so we have enjoyed the golf course, zoo, museums and other recreational activities it offers. It’s also a short walk to Washington University, cafes, restaurants and, best of all, a gourmet ice cream shop. The home is in a good location for commuting downtown. Even at rush hour, you can skip some of the biggest traffic backups.

How is the home for entertaining?

It’s great. The potential for hosting guests is one of the things that attracted us to the house. The flow is perfect for entertaining. The entryway is spacious, so we often used it for putting out a drink cart at parties. The large dining room is off that center hall, so it’s easy to transition between spaces. The den is off of the dining room, and we’ve been able to extend seating into that room, so up to 20 people have been able to gather for holiday meals. The kitchen is separate from the dining room, so what’s happening in there isn’t immediately apparent to your guests.

Is the home well suited for a family?

Yes. There are three bedrooms on the second floor and a fourth on the third, which also has a bathroom and living space. It could easily be made into a fifth bedroom if needed. We used the third floor to host out-of-own guests, giving them their own space to unwind. It was very comfortable for both them and us.

Did you make any changes to the property?

One of the features we’ve enjoyed the most is the screened porch we added. We’ve been able to entertain out there quite a bit, even during COVID. We also remodeled the kitchen and master bathroom. We converted a couple of smaller closets into a large walk-in for the master suite, turned some other closet space into a second-floor laundry and made the original first-floor laundry room into a pantry.

What do you most want the next homeowners to know about the property?

It’s a very comfortable place. The maintenance has been easy to manage, and we’ve just enjoyed living here. &

Overall, I think your home looks pretty good, but a number of small changes would improve its presentation a great deal.

First, I would suggest removing a number of trees that block the view of the facade. I think you will agree that it looks better when you can see the house’s major windows. A new river birch replaces the tortured red bud tree. Next, you will see I have added an evergreen hedge near the curb accented with tiger lillies. I feel that this underscores the “all American” feel of the property.

I’ve also made a number of minor architectural changes. Wider shutters with hinges and tie-backs as well as a large window flower box and a front door accent color add a bit of charm to the picture.

After a few decades most properties need some adjustments. Often as plants mature, we can see that not all of them are necessary in their full grown state to enhance the presentation.

As Paul Doerner, the genius behind our Homework column, has shown us time and time again, sometimes just adding a small amount of “jewelry” to your home can make a huge difference overall.

If you have the place for it, a simple pair of gates can create a regal feel.

If your front facade lacks dimension, add a unique overhang

This is one of my favorite ways to add instant curb appeal to a bland exterior wall.

An easy way to change things up is to pick a new color scheme for your exterior doors and trim. Get creative!

Make sure to accentuate the grand features of your home by adding up-lights to your exterior lighting plans.

If you have a front porch, decorate it!

Add rugs and drapes to make it an extension of your home.

If you have dormers, try a cedar shake finish versus standard siding to add interest.

Nothing is more dramatic than up-lighting your trees along the drive and in front of your home.

Adding gas lights to your front elevation creates a warm welcoming glow like nothing else.

Adding this contemporary wood fence and bold modern house numbers gives this otherwise ho-hum house a wow factor.

Thanks to the distinct fenestrations (AKA holes) in the leaves, it’s sometimes referred to as the Swiss cheese plant. An easy-going option, it can bring some tropical flair to even the cripest of autumn days. Not suited for direct sunlight, the monstera thrives when placed in medium to intense indirect light. It should be watered every one to two weeks, allowing the soil to dry between waterings.

The monstera does not handle freezing temperatures well, so make sure you keep it warm as temperatures drop outside.

THINKING GREEN

Fall is a season of dazzling color, but it also means the end of the lush greens of spring and summer. As the air starts to chill, you don’t have to say goodbye to the gorgeous greenery in your life. Just bring the outdoors in with houseplants! Here are some options to bring a little natural beauty to your living spaces, even as the days get colder.

For Fall (&Winter!)

oxalis triangularis

While not actually a clover, this houseplant is also known as the purple shamrock plant due to its distinct triangular leaves. Its beautiful color makes a striking addition to any home, and best of all, it’s easy to care for and thrives indoors all year. It should be placed in a sunny area and since it begins as a bulb, be careful not to overwater. Allow the top one or two inches of soil to dry before watering again. This will help avoid rot while also ensuring the plant does not go dormant.

Known for its delicate fan-shaped fronds, this plant takes up to three years to reach full maturity—luckily, it looks stunning throughout the stages of its growth. Since it thrives in humidity, the soil should be kept moist with daily watering. To mimic the warm humid air it grows in, mist the plant with warm water a couple times a day. Avoid placing your maidenhair fern in direct sunlight. Instead, try to find a location that allows for indirect light in the morning or afternoon.

If you want to bring drama to a room, the fiddle leaf fig is an easy way to do so. The plant needs a lot of unobstructed natural light, so they do best when placed directly in front of a window, especially when the days get shorter in fall and winter. The larger your plant is, the more sun it will require to thrive. They should be watered thoroughly about once a week. Make sure you dust your plant’s leaves. If dust accumulates, it can inhibit its ability to perform photosynthesis.

This tropical beauty has oversized leaves with distinct silvery bands. It can make a bold statement in any home. Calathea require high humidity and constant soil moisture. Make sure you water the plant whenever the top inch or two of soil is almost dry. Regularly mist the plant or place it near a humidifier. Keep the calathea out of direct sunlight to avoid damage to the leaves. While it can thrive in lower light, make sure you keep it in an area where there is at least sufficient light to read by.

I am surprised when I view a luxury home that does not have heated floors in the primary bathroom.  While you are at it, add a heated towel rack!  If possible, a skylight adds magic to the space. Everyone raves about Toto toilets, though I have never used one. A bench in the shower also is important.
