STEADFAST. PASSIONATE. INSIGHTFUL. ELEGANT. INSPIRING. These are just a few of the many ways that the friends and family of Rie Burton describe her. Having recently turned 90, Mrs. Burton has been a fixture of the Gainesville arts and cultural scene since she moved to the city in the 1960s. She is adored by all who know her because of who she is, not just for the many things she has done for the community. Yet, if you have ever visited the Historic Thomas Center on NE 6th Avenue, then you have witnessed her years of hard work and determination. Reuben Thomas, his wife, Kathryn, and their five children lived there for 15 years. A native of Gainesville, Major Thomas began his career in education but in 1895 he switched to business and politics and was elected to the Florida Senate, serving for four years. Over the years he founded or assumed interest in many Gainesville businesses, including Dutton Bank, the White House Hotel, and a Tin Can Tourist Camp. Major Thomas also served as a city alderman and then mayor from 1901-1907. During his tenure he led the delegation that successfully campaigned for the University of Florida to come to Gainesville.
