www.wellingtonnz.com Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city, has so much to offer. Set on the edge of a stunning harbour and surrounded by rolling hills, it’s a city waiting to be explored.
Welsh Dragon Bar Even if you are not from Wales, you will love the hospitality at the Welsh Dragon Bar. It is the ONLY Welsh bar in the southern hemisphere! We feature brilliant live music from Thursday-Sunday including some very talented modern (& hunky!!) pianists, excellant Welsh vocalist & acoustic guitar (Jack). We have weekend specials such as superb Mulled Wine & our hearty Welsh Broth, “Cawl” & a lovely feature fireplace to warm the extremities or enjoy the large enclosed courtyard for fresh air! Jo & Mike ran the only Welsh restaurant in NZ for 11 years before opening the Welsh Pub in town 7 years ago, so they are well geared up for hands-on hospitality after 18 years behind them & love to entertain the travellers you never know what will happen next! Mike & Jo are naturally the genuine Welsh hosts along with all the Welsh staff who thrive on their hospitality & genuine love of promoting all things Welsh.
Today Wellington boasts as many cafes per head as New York... big city attractions with a small city feel... nature around every corner in the form of trees, parks, reserves, sanctuaries, wild life and zoos... a ‘mini Harrods’ in the form of department store Kirkaldie and Staines... quirky shopping in Cuba Mall... the best restaurants in New Zealand... a golden beach... a rugged coastline and ocean seas... playgrounds and toyshops... world renowned interactive museums... a capital city with fine edifices and law courts... a waterfront accessible to all... restaurants serving delicious local as well as international food styles... bars and night clubs to romance the night away.

Cruise Wellington’s Harbour Wellington looks stunning from the harbour. For a visitor, a cruise on the city’s unique harbour ferry service feels like a privilege, but commuters do it every day on the Dominion Post ferries. You can do it too - ferries depart Queens Wharf throughout the day for scenic Days Bay at Eastbourne, with its beautiful native bush and great waterfront cafes. Or take the 10.00am or 12.00pm and stop at historic Matiu Somes Island on route and learn about Wellington’s early history.

NZ Police Museum Established in 1908, the New Zealand Police Museum uses original evidence and Police objects and technology to tell the very personal stories behind the events, disasters and crimes that have galvanised our nation. Displays include weapons used by criminals, evidence from murder investigations, stories of outstanding feats of detection and forensic science, Police tools and artefacts, and major historical and social events like the 1981 Springbok Tour and the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior. Although the Museum sometimes tells the darker side of New Zealand history, we also strive to provide a positive forum for interaction with Police and their vision of ‘Safer Communities Together’.

Waiwhetu Treasures
Local Maori, Te Atiawa, welcomed the first settlers from the New Zealand Company out of England when they arrived on the shores of Petone in 1839. Today you’re welcomed in to their home to discover rich local heritage and encounter the world of the internationally-renowned Hetet family of Maori artists. Nestled in the Maori tribal village at Waiwhetu, you will find Hetet Art Space – full of warm and engaging hospitality touching the hearts of those who visit. Art is an important part of Maori tradition and the Hetet family ensure it’s alive and well. Ask about the stories behind these artworks and it’s no surprise to us at ‘our local’ that visitors leave surprised and enchanted by some pretty special art and hospitality. Visitors to Waiwhetu are among good company with names like Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Princess Diana and Prince Charles all having been previous guests of the Te Atiawa people. Don’t be surprised if you’ve seen some of these pieces before as Hetet works feature in collections and exhibitions across the world. The impressive contemporary whare waka across the road houses treasured traditional waka and artefacts. The gallery and Kotuku Rendezvous cafe are open daily 9am - 4pm.
Bike out to the stunning Pencarrow Coast and discover New Zealand’s first lighthouse at the head of Wellington harbour. 21 shipwrecks have ended up here – most recently in 1981. Explore historic remnants, nationally significant lakes and wetlands just a few minutes further on - and find a seal or two lazing in the sun. Hire a bike for the day, then finish with fine dining and award winning gelato in Days Bay and Eastbourne.
Visiting Jackson Street, Petone is an experience of old world charm and contemporary chic with a rich tapestry of stories to tell. The area was the first settlement in Wellington and still has some of the oldest operating businesses in the region. Jackson Street houses the longest serving police station in New Zealand. Built in 1908 and moved to its current location in 1994, it was the home for the first elected police in New Zealand. In its heyday the station had ten police working out of the tiny building with four holding cells, brimmed with clientele. On its original site the building was set lower than the street and regularly flooded. Police were often seen dealing with prisoners wearing their gumboots to cope with the surrounding mud. In the early days, alcohol was the biggest problem for the area with many drunks spending the night sleeping off their stupor in confinement. When the jailhouse was moved to its existing site, ten local young men who had been in trouble were used to help renovate the building. To this day, the building is almost original and from the moment you step inside you get a sense of the rich history and life of the early settlers in New Zealand. You can still see names of past inhabitants scribed in the interior walls of the jail. Open: Monday – Friday 10.00am-4.00pm, or by appointment 274b Jackson Street, Petone. The Dowse Art Museum
More New Zealand Firsts
Marking the first settlement of the New Zealand Company from England. You’ll find many New Zealand firsts dotted around the region; Korokoro Dam, Pencarrow Lighthouse and the first rugby game in the north island was held in Petone. The Settlers Museum on the harbour foreshore at Petone marks the spot where the first settler’s ship arrived from England in 1840. Explore the enterprising powerhouse of Petone’s past and an impressive mix of ‘made in New Zealand’ stories. Petone Rugby Club has a first class museum celebrating the first 125 years of rugby in the community.
The Dowse Art Museum is arguably the best contemporary gallery in New Zealand and sits as a centrepiece of Hutt City across from the newly completed civic square. There’s an ever-changing line up of local, national and international artists and designers. Live performances include a monthly Late Lounge showcasing kiwi music in a relaxed family friendly environment. The Dowse also houses Nuku Tewhatewha, significant Pataka (Mãori store house, usually for food) was commissioned by paramount chief Wi Tako Ngatata of Te Atiawa and carved in the 1850s as a sign of support for Kíngitanga, or the Mãori King Movement. It is one of only seven Pataka built around the North Island as ‘Pillars of the Kingdom’, and the only one to survive. FREE ENTRY. Open Mon–Fri 10am–4.30pm, Sat–Sun 10am–5pm www.dowse.org.nz

Loopline Vineyard
The first grapes on the Opaki plains were planted by Frank Parker in 1990. He planted an acre of Riesling and produced his first vintage in his Loopline Winery in 1993 in what was a converted calf rearing shed. Ian & Jenny McGovern coming from a hill country farming background planted their first vineyard in 1995. Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling & Merlot made up these first plantings on the 6 acre block. Loopline Winery started buying these grapes in 1999. In 2002 the McGoverns brought the Winery and another 7 acres bordering the Parkers and planted more Pinot Noir, Chardonnay & Sauvignon Blanc. Loopline, named after the road it is situated on, is the most northern Wairarapa Winery. The Opaki area now has a number of vineyards and one other winery and its stony free draining soils have produced numerous award winning wines. Now producing Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc the Loopline wines will delight! The team at Hastings City Art Gallery is delighted to be hosting the exciting touring exhibition, KERMADEC LINES IN THE OCEAN throughout February, March and April. The exhibition features work in a range of media from nine senior New Zealand artists. Phil Dadson, Bruce Foster, Fiona Hall, Gregory O’Brien, Jason O’Hara, John Pule, John Reynolds, Elizabeth Thomson and Robin White come together in this exhibition - as they did on their voyage to the Kermadec Islands in 2011 - to explore, raise awareness and try to understand this unique environment just 1,000 north of Auckland. This exhibition is produced and toured by The Pew Environment Group in association with the Tauranga Art Gallery. Opening at the same time is a foyer exhibition, Esther Leigh and Kristy Gorman: Open Edition. This show of photography and works on paper encourages a dialogue between the artists’ collection of work. It also explores the notion of the oppositional structures and erasure and escalation within the work, and within the process of reproduction. In HCAG’s smaller space, the Holt Gallery, guest curator Ruth McLean currently has her exhibition Secret Garden currently on show, featuring 20 of New Zealand’s finest outsider artists. The best way to keep abreast of Hastings City Art Gallery’s exhibitions, events and news is to check out www.hastingscityartgallery.co.nz, follow @HCAGnz on Twitter or ‘like’ the gallery on Facebook. HCAG is open 7 Days: 10am-4:30pm. Entry is free. During the festive season, the gallery is only closed on the statutory holidays (25th and 26th of December and 1st and 2nd of January).

HAWKE’S BAY
www.hawkesbaynz.com Hawkes Bay Trails & Bridge Pa Wine Growing District The Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District is located on old terraces of the Ngaruroro River, which up until 10,000 years ago flowed out to sea between Maraekakaho and Roys Hill. Roughly delineated by three roads: Ngatarawa Road, State Highway 50 and Maraekakaho Road, the Bridge Pa triangle is recognised as a premium wine growing area in Hawke’s Bay. The river deposited vast amounts of greywacke resulting in soil ideal for vineyards. With high Growing Degree Days the area excels at full flavoured Syrah, Merlot, Red Blends, Chardonnay and Viognier. The Bridge Pa Triangle has long been a producer of award-winning wines and is home to Sileni Estates, voted Cellar Door of the year 2010 and 2012, Ash Ridge voted Winery of the Year at the Hawkes Bay A & P Mercedes Benz Wine Awards and Salvare Estate winner of the 2009 Cellar Door of the Year. A great way to enjoy the area and taste the wines is to hop on a bike and explore using the recently completed cycle trail. For the full cycle trail map scan here. The terrain is flat and mostly off-road ride and as well as the rural section it also goes through the historic tree-lined Oak Avenue in Hastings and along the banks of the Ngaruroro River. The Bunkers Cafe at the Bridge Pa Golf Course welcomes all visitors and is a great stop for hot or cold refreshments.

Takaro Trails – Cycle tours of Hawke’s Bay – for the fun of it!
For Jenny Ryan having fun is as important as enjoying the outdoors, hence the name of her new business “Takaro Trails”. Takaro is the Maori word for ‘play’ - an essential element to every holiday! Self-guided cycle tours form the basis of the business, with itineraries that include day rides around the famous wineries of the Gimblett Gravels or a wonderfully scenic ‘off road’ ride from Ahuriri to Havelock North along the fabulous Rotary Pathway. For those with more time on their hands there’s three or five-day tours of farmland, vineyards and villages with everything included to ensure a trouble free holiday. It’s a refreshing and invigorating way to holiday, perfect for experienced cyclists or first-timers keen to explore the unique diversity of Hawke’s Bay by bike.

Welcome to the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel
Welcome to the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, Porangahau, in the heart of the Hawkes Bay. Established in the late 1800’s it was and still is the heart and soul of the Porangahau community. Known fondly as “The Duke” by locals it offers a warm and friendly feel, with a touch of good old country hospitality to all those who enter through the doors. So whether its calling in for a quick cup of coffee, or meeting up with friends and family for a Sunday lunch, the Duke is definitely the place to be. Proprietor David Severinsen and his staff invite you to join them in their little slice of paradise - Porangahau and make a great day out by enjoying Porangahau and the surrounding area’s.
You can feel like the lord (or lady) of the manor at the magnificient Chapelwick Estate.
Chapelwick Estate
The magnificent estate that is Chapelwick will make you feel as though you are the Lord – or the Lady – of the manor. But you won’t need to be nobility to enjoy this – your hosts, Rod and Raewyn Sykes, will make your stay so comfortable that the only discomfort might be the prospect of leaving. Located near Waipukurau and only minutes to the golden sands of Porangahau Beach, the Chapelwick heritage can be traced back to the establishment of the massive Porangahau sheep station in 1854, although this plush home was built in 1920. Today guests savor the remoteness, taking long walks, playing tennis, or just staying indoors in front of the fire to take in a movie, devour a book or sip a local wine. No matter how an appetite is earned, the farm style meals are wonderful. Opening for Sunday Brunch from Sunday 30th December with delicious food cooked by Chef Thorsten Witzel.

“Mr Hatrick’s Motor Vessel Wairua”
The Historic Whanganui Riverboat WAIRUA is currently sailing scheduled lunch cruises to Upokongaro some 13k upriver from Wanganui. Wairua was built in Poplar London for A Hatrick and company and entered service in November 1904 to service the upper reaches of the Whanganui River. In 1955 the vessel sank at its moorings and was recovered for restoration in 1987. After 19 years of hard work by four local men WAIRUA was returned to service in October 2006. “This summer we have started a new scheduled river cruise to Upokongaro with a stop over for lunch” advises M.V.WAIRUA owner Dave McDermid. “We had taken a number of private charter groups up to the new Cafe’ 4 forty 4 at Upokongaro and the feed back we received was most positive. We then decided to introduce this trip as a scheduled cruise for the summer months.” “Visitors can now have a leisurely cruise on the Whanganui River with a stop over for lunch at a nice cafe’ as an added attraction. Passengers can also bring their own food and drinks to picnic at the landing if they wish”. says Dave. Lunch cruises depart at 10-30am and return at 2pm. The cruise is available on Wednesdays,Thursdays,Fridays and Saturdays. It pays to book as schedules are subject to change due to operational requirements and river conditions. Group booking discounts are also available if booked directly. Ph 0800 924 782. www.whanganuiriverboat.co.nz

Visitors can see most types of stationery steam engines, small locomotives, steam rollers and a fine traction engine. A number of engines also await full restoration. The collection progressed from traction engines to stationary type engines, and later a railway section built up of locomotives, an open wagon, guards van, a genuine New Zealand railway station (ex Tokomaru 1886) and an oval shaped railway approximately 1km long was developed. The museum is open with staticdisplays 7 days a week and “Steams Up” days when engines are running are advertised on the web site www.tokomarusteam.co.nz
Murrayfields is such a safe place to let the children run free! Not only is it well back from the road, there is so much at Murrayfields to keep them amused. You can watch the younger ones in the playground while you have a coffee and a meal on the balcony. Come feed the animals and let the children play and pet them. Inside they’ll be spellbound with the exhibits in the impressive pioneer museum, and adults will almost certainly use this as an opportunity to reminisce! Everyone will marvel at the detail in the magnificent Helenstown, a scale model town based on colonial buildings that actually exist – some you will recognise! Murrayfields is on Highway 57 between Levin and Shannon.

Must visit: Kapiti Island
Kapiti Island sits proudly off the coast from Paraparaumu and is one of those places both locals and visitors alike will often sit and admire but don’t actually visit. Well Kapiti Tours and DOC have made it easy with daily trips leaving from Paraparaumu Beach (weather permitting). As one of a few accessible island nature reserves in NZ a visit to Kapiti provides an opportunity for people to observe birds that are either very rare or absent from the mainland altogether and to see the recovery of vegetation after intensive modification during last century. Following an intensive pest eradication program Kapiti is free of all pests that prey on our birdlife and forests and now hosts significant populations of the Little Spotted Kiwi, kakariki (redcrowned parakeet), robin, bellbird and saddleback and the prehistoric looking Takahe to name but a few. So whether you want to just sit and listen to the birdsong or explore further afield Kapiti is a place you won’t forget. So call 0800 Kapiti (0800 527 484) to book your visit or book all activities at the Paraparaumu i-site.

boat to Eric Lewes who collected cream from the host of dairy farms appearing along the river. The boat was the life line for all the families trying to make a living in this remote area. The Cygnet was sold in 1919 to Eric Lewis who never missed a day on the river. When the dairy factory closed down the boat was sold and moved to Kawhia where she ended up in a paddock for over 15 years. Rex Mather bought the Cygnet in 1993 and spent over a year restoring her to her full glory. In 1994 she was back on the Mokau River and is still going strong to this very day. The Cygnet is still known as the cream boat even though it hasn’t carried cans of cream for more than 50 years. Neil and Dawn Colman now operate the vessel and these days it takes visitors 14 kilometres up the river to a secluded spot for a picnic lunch.
Mokau River Cruises
The Mokau River
The Mokau River was once one of the busiest rivers in the country. Its waters were plied by hundreds of vessels carrying timber, and coal, and of course cream from the dairy farms. It was the only river in the North Island to be gazetted a highway. Large ships used to go up the river to take coal from the mines and the old bridge used to be raised so the ships could get through. Whitebait abounded with more than 300 whitebait stands and there was so much whitebait up the Mokau river, so the story goes, farmers used to feed it to their stock or put it on their garden as fertiliser. The middle reaches of Mokau River flow through original and regenerating native forest. Over the years much of the lower reaches of both the Mokau and Awakino rivers have been cleared of the dense native rainforest that occupied the catchments. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s, logs and coal were transported down the Mokau River to the small port settlement of Mokau on the northern bank of the river’s mouth. From its mouth, Mokau River is navigable for small vessels for 37 km. A ferry service transported travellers across the Mokau from 1889 to 1927 when it was replaced by a road bridge. The port is now largely obsolete. The middle to upper reaches of Mokau River have a series of rapids that attract kayakers and both the Mokau and Awakino Rivers attract trout fishers along their length and the lower reaches of both rivers are still significant recreational whitebait fisheries.
