or a hassle-free adventure on the C&W trail, give Mountain Shuttle a call (250-231-4305) for drop off at one end and pick up at the other. The shuttle holds up to a dozen riders and bikes, and has just enough room for a large cooler so you can celebrate the finish in style. Rental bikes are available at Revolution Cycles in downtown Rossland (250-362-5688). Once you’ve finished your C&W epic, it’s time to chill out in laidback Rossland, Canada’s Alpine City. The historic center of this mountain town is all of three blocks long, but there’s plenty of boutique shopping and excellent eateries. There’s plenty more world-class mountain biking and road riding to be had, plus hiking, disc golf, or traditional golf at RedStone resort.

COLUMBIA & WESTERN RAIL TRAIL

1000m 1110m

HE 84-KILOMETRE bike trip along the old C&W railgrade line from Castlegar to Christina Lake in the southern Monashee range is a blissful zen pedal, a steady grade up or down that’s just right for getting lost in your own thoughts, connecting with your fellow riders, or simply taking in the mountains and lakes. You can almost hear the rumble of the wheels of trains that moved mountains of ore, people and cargo in the early 1900s. There are a number of options for this backcountry gravel cruise. Come prepared with water and bike repair essentials as this journey through time means that you are a long way from help.

The ride south from the summit down to the legendary waters of Christina Lake offers a shorter version of the same steady grade and brilliant views. Again, start at the Paulson Detour Road north of the Paulson Bridge.

THE ENTIRE C&W ROUTE For a more challenging ride, start at either the Castlegar or Christina Lake end, and ride the 84 kilometres up and back down.

The most popular ride involves a vehicle drop from Highway 3 just a few kilometers above the Paulson Bridge. A quick descent down a gravel road puts you on the railgrade just a few clicks from the summit at the old Farron station. Heading north, the balance of the 51km section is a steady downhill as you head towards Castlegar and the stunning vistas of Arrow Lake. Tunnels and trestles punctuate the ride. Remember to bring a headlight: the Bulldog Tunnel is long enough to devour any daylight.
