ithout keeping the tourists in motive mode to travel there would be no travel industry. It is a kind of important necessity for the industry to understand what attracts tourists to visit a particular destination. It is imperative to find out the new emerging trends of tourist’s taste and the kind of activity in which they are interested in. Now the Term Tourism and Travel also evolves changes like every aspect of life. It clearly maintains a purpose rather than merely a leisure segment. Since the growth of international tourism became unimaginable and it has also brought about rapid changes in terms of economic growth as well as decline. The wide spread growth not only resulted the globalisation of people’s movements but also contributed a vibrant industry with opportunities for millions of people. UNWTO's Tourism 2020 Vision forecasts that international arrivals are expected to reach nearly 1.6 billion by the year 2020. Analyzing the trends & challenges is not an easy task. The diversified types of tourism are created from the experiences that travellers want to experience. Their experiences with adventure tourism, nature tourism, and cultural tourism have paved ways to new market niche for a different experience. Adventure Tourism, Medical Tourism, Mice Tourism, Volunteer Tourism, Sustainable Tourism, Responsible Tourism, Spiritual tourism are some of the emerging trends.

With the immense influence of social media people are more searching for remote places than the well known tourists spots and wish to get involved in different kind of activities than sigh seeing. Especially the millennials mostly prefer this option because it gives them the freedom to do something innovative in their own style. At the same time instagram matters them. Since instagram has more than one billion users its good for the Industry to tap this platform. The tour operator is also venturing to new off-beat destinations. Of course it’s a good sign to the Industry which tackles the growing problem of Overtourism. Another stand alone sector in the Industry to be tapped is Food Tourism, since it has an important place whether people opt for luxury travel or budget travel. Tourism has an ability to reduce the gap between rich and poor in the social ladder through generating socio-economic opportunities and help. Responsible Tourism sector plays a big role in this scenario. Sustainability challenge is a big task in this time and Tourism Industry could not remain indifferent from this. Now it’s high time to consider any formulation on tourism and its role in the society and economy will be according to the right place and position in the economic planning and programming.

ccording to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)’s latest barometer, international tourist arrivals grew 6% in the first six months of 2018 after a record year of growth in 2017. All world regions enjoyed robust growth in tourist arrivals in JanuaryJune 2018. The increase was fuelled by strong demand from major source markets, supported by an upswing in the global economy. It comes after record year-round growth of 7% in 2017.

THE ROBUST GROWTH WAS FUELLED BY STRONG DEMAND FROM MAJOR SOURCE MARKETS, SUPPORTED BY AN UPSWING IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY.

“Today’s release of international tourism data for the first half of 2018 serves as further proof of the sector’s resilience and relentless growth trajectory. We continue to work with our many partners to translate this growth into better jobs, more benefits to societies, and more opportunities for sustainable livelihoods and

destinations”, said UNWTO SecretaryGeneral Zurab Pololikashvili. By region, Europe and Asia and the Pacific led growth with a 7% increase in arrivals each. Southern Mediterranean Europe and South-East Asia had the strongest results in these regions, both welcoming 9% more international tourists. The Middle East and Africa also recorded sound results with arrivals growing at 5% and 4%, respectively, according to still-limited information available for destinations in these regions. The Americas saw 3% growth in arrivals over the six-month period, driven by South America (+7%) and North America (+5%). The United States continued to fuel much growth in the region and beyond. On the demand side, France, the United Kingdom and the Russian Federation all reported double-digit increases in outbound spending in Europe. India and the Republic of Korea drove growth in Asia and the Pacific, while the world’s top source market China reported similar spending as in the same period last year. The first half of the year accounts for about 45% of annual international tourist arrivals. The second half represents 55% as it is three days longer and includes the Northern Hemisphere high-season months of July and August. Against a strong first semester, growth prospects for the remainder of 2018 remain positive overall, though at a slower pace, according to the latest UNWTO Confidence Index survey. The Index value for May-August and expectations for September-December are somewhat lower than the Index value for January-April. November 2018 Tourism India

T

he World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in partnership with the Global Tourism Economy Research Centre (GTERC), presented its Asia Tourism Trends Report at the Global Tourism Economy Forum in Macao (China). The report shows Asia and the Pacific outperforming all world regions in growth in international arrivals since 2005. ‘UNWTO/GTERC Asia Tourism Trends – 2018’ shows that international tourist arrivals in Asia and the Pacific grew 6% in 2017 to reach 323 million, around a quarter of the world’s total. Of all world regions Asia and the Pacific, the second-most visited after Europe, has grown the

fastest in international tourist arrivals since 2005. Arrivals increased an average of 6% per year, above the world average of 4%. Rapid economic growth in a region with over half the world’s population, coupled with rising air connectivity, travel facilitation and large infrastructure projects, have boosted international travel in the region. This has had a large impact on Asian destinations’ tourism earnings, which have steadily increased from 17% of the world total in 2000 to 29% in 2017. This is equivalent to US$ 390 billion in tourism receipts. Asia and the Pacific plays a vital role as a source market as well, fuelling much growth in both regional and

long-haul destinations. The region produced 335 million international travellers spending US$ 502 billion in 2017, 37% of the world total. Around 80% of these visits were concentrated in Asia destinations. Outside the region, 56% of the long-haul trips were to Europe. To celebrate the EU-China Tourism Year 2018, the report looks at international tourism between China, the largest economy in Asia, and the block of 28 European Union (EU) countries. It finds that 5.7 million Chinese tourists travelled to Europe in 2016, of which 3.5 million went to the EU. In reverse, 5.5 million Europeans travelled to China in 2016, 3.1 million of whom from EU countries. ‘UNWTO/GTERC Asia Tourism Trends – 2018’ provides an insight into the Greater Bay Area of China, a project to create a large socio-economic zone and tourism area comprising the two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao, as well as nine cities in Guangdong Province. According to the report, the Greater Bay Area is China’s fastest-growing tourism region and the Pearl River Delta home to several cities with high tourism development including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Foshan. century and the worst affected business and industry sector was tourism in the state. But the focused and confident move by private and public sector synergy to bounce back and revive the ailing sector is now a global discussion point. Now the state is slowly but surely heading towards complete recovery. According to a recently conducted survey by the Kerala tourism department, it was found that 60 of the 70 major tourist destinations of the state have been restored and are back to being operational. The ‘tourism readiness survey’ which was conducted in September had district-level officials visiting 70 major tourist destinations across 14 districts in the state and gauging them based on three parameters overall impact by the flood, damage to road connectivity and condition of hotels and resorts in the area, said Mr. Balakiran IAS, Director of Kerala Tourism. He also added that Kerala Tourism will continue its international marketing campaigns to attract more tourists to Kerala and the state government is in favor of an aggressive global marketing campaign to resuscitate tourism sector in the deluge hit Kerala. ‘God’s Own Country’ will take part in international trade fairs and 26 Business to Business meet in International cities during the year 2018-2019 starting from October. The roadshows in the Middle East will be followed by those in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Auckland (New Zealand),

Sydney and Melbourne (Australia), Dublin (Ireland), Munich and Frankfurt (Germany _ Vienna (Austria), Rome (Italy), Zurich (Switzerland), Prague (Czech Republic), Paris (France) and London (UK) In the USA, B2B meets will be held in New York, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles, between February 19 and28,2019. Due to the deluge, although the Kerala tourism had kick starts in September, Government officials or the ministers did not participate in the events in Malaysia, Russia, and Japan. Private sector stakeholders and Marketing Agency of the

Kerala Tourism department has actively participated and promoted the potential of the state tourism to their global counterparts, and they have also organized road shows (B2B meets) in St Petersburg in Russia and in Osaka (Japan). Tourism contributes to about 11 % of the state’s GDP and is responsible for about 15 lakh jobs. Moksha. This year the ArdhKumbh Mela is conducted in Prayagraj ( Allahabad) from 15th of January 2019 to 4th of March 2019. The fairs are held amidst the chanting of Vedic hymns and mantras which free the mind from the worldly sufferings and miseries. Kumbh is referred as the Sangam i.e. act of merging of all the knowledge that exists in the world, there is a constant distribution of knowledge and life imparted by the various ascetics from different sects, speaking different

languages and dialects come together for a holy dip in river Ganges and Godavari professing their experiences. The above mentioned Sanskrit sloka talks about the trinity of Gods, Brahma being the creator, Vishnu the sustainer and Shiva the destroyer, the mother Earth and the Vedas all exist in Kumbh, which translates as Kumbh is where all the knowledge is imparted and grasped. The pilgrims, tourists and the ascetics are all in constant search for answers which shall be attained here. According to Hindu Mythology,

Gods and Demons churned the ocean in order to obtain the pot of nectar ‘Kumbh’ which was meant for equal distribution but this led to a war between the Gods and the Demons which lasted for 12 human years. It is believed that celestial Bird Garuda flew away with the Kumbh and few drops of the Amrita (nectar)fell in Prayagraj (Allahabad), Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain. These four places are identified as the present day locations for Kumbh Mela. Kumbh Mela is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural

Heritage of Humanity. The Mela takes place in different locations depending on the positioning and alignment of the planet of Brahspati (Jupiter) and the Sun, pilgrims and devotees come together to commemorate the event. Jupiter is known as the ‘Guru’ or the spiritual master who along with the Sun ‘rational intellect’ guides the moon which symbolises the human mind thus resulting in the immortality of self through knowledge. The PurnaKumbh takes place in a gap of twelve years while the ArdhKumbh happens every six years in Prayagraj and Haridwar. The ArdhKumbh 2019 is being held in Parayagraj since the 2013 MahaKumbh which happened after 144 years. Prayagraj or Allahabad is the most

celebrated location during the Kumbh Mela because of its confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati and being the specific point of holy dip. According to Hindu traditions Prayagraj is also considered as the origin of the universe and the centre of the earth, thus having a proficient significance for the Mela conducted at this place. According to mythology when Lord Brahma offered his first prayer here when he was finished with completing the creation of World. The Mela is divine and special because of the ambience that it projects. The chiming of bells at different times singing its own melody, the sweet fragrance of the incense sticks, temple flowers and camphor soothing our senses. The symphony of continuous

Vedic chants and devotional singing at various marquees add on to the extravaganza. The Mela is a visual treat to the eyes with the procession carried out by the ascetics from different sects in their gold and silver chariot to that of the Shahi Snan taken by the saints from different order following their order of hierarchy. The loud cry of happiness that they produce makes the hair on your arm bristle, such powerful is the impact. The saffron, the white, the ash smeared bodies of the ascetics and the yogi’s mingles with profusion. The Shivanti Naga Sadhus are the major attraction, these sadhus are of the highest strata and get to take the holy bath first, followed by the other ascetics. The Naga Sadhus remain naked their whole life, their body has adjusted to all the adverse temperatures and it is interesting to watch and learn from them. These Sadhus are seen carrying trident in their hand and ashes smeared all over their body with three legged tilak on their forehead. When in Kumbh Mela don’t miss out the Satsangs, the religious discussions followed by musical performances by the dedicated devotees and pilgrims. The State tourism Department has set up colourful tents and camps for the Sadhus, pilgrims and the tourists. There are special tents for the international visitors who has especially come to watch the largest human bathing ritual and the Indian Fair of higher significance. During the Mela the volunteers provide Langar (community meals) for each and everyone and they all sit together and have the feast. am pleased to announce the addition of a new long-awaited route to our network. Russia is an increasingly important destination from Oman, and since we announced this route earlier in the year, we have seen strong interest, both from Oman travellers and from customers transitting through our Muscat hub from cities around the world. Connecting Muscat with Moscow, we expect this daily service to further stimulate economic, trade and business relations between the two friendly countries. Trade between Oman and Russia continues to rise and we are happy to be able to facilitate this further with the start of this service. Oman is turning into a very important regional logistics hub with world-class infrastructure and we are sure this is recognised by the business enterprises in Russia. Apart from strengthening and opening up new business opportunities between Russia and Oman, our flights will also open the gates for Russian tourists to come and enjoy our beautiful country.” This new route will be serviced by Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, designed to offer exceptional performance, flexibility and efficiency. Configured with 162 seats in a two-class configuration: 12 in business and 150 in economy with significant enhancements across both cabins — the MAX aircraft is an example of Oman Air’s commitment to continually upgrading its products and services to deliver guest satisfaction. Oman Air’s extensive flight network provides travellers from Russia a wide variety of options including 11 Indian destinations (Goa, Mumbai,

Chennai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Delhi, Lucknow, Bangalore, Kozhikode, and Jaipur) in addition to Indian Subcontinent destinations such as Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, all of which are less than a four hour flight from Muscat. Oman Air flies with double and triple daily frequencies to some of these cities providing guests with more choices and easy connections. Paul Starrs, Chief Commercial Officer at Oman Air said: “Our new service will provide more choice and greater convenience as more travellers look to Russia for a holiday getaway. We have done a great deal of preparation before commencing this route through several niche events and agent meet-ups and I am confident that this new addition will be another successful destination for Oman Air. We are sure that there will be demand for both business and leisure traffic, allowing us to showcase our own beautiful country to Russian visitors. Our Russian guests will also be able to take advantage of our fantastic new passenger terminal in Muscat Airport which houses Oman Air’s bespoke premium lounges, 6,000 square metres of Duty Free shopping, 96 check-in counters and a modern 90-room airside hotel.” The new service between Moscow and Muscat is the airline’s third route launched this year after Istanbul and Casablanca and is part of Oman Air’s exciting fleet and network expansion programme, which will see the airline operate up to 70 aircraft to around 60 destinations by 2022. A

bilateral meeting on Tourism Cooperation between India and Morocco led by the Minister of Tourism, Air Transport, Handicraft and Social Economy, Kingdom of Morocco, Mr. Mohamed Sajid and the Minister of State for Tourism (IC), Government of India, Shri. K. J. Alphons, held in New Delhi. During this meeting both the Ministers agreed to enhance the tourism

cooperation between India & Morocco and to work towards increasing tourist arrivals between both countries. This meeting was followed by signing of an agreement of cooperation between the India Tourism Development Corporation and La Societe Marocaine D’Ingenierie Touristique, also known as Moroccan Agency for Tourism development (SMIT).

While addressing the media Mr. Sajid said, “India is a very big country. However, there were low numbers of foreign tourists from India to Morocco in recent years. We have a lot of similarities with India in terms of culture and development, Morocco, which currently has Indian tourist footfall of around 15,000, aims to touch the 40,000-mark by 2019. “Both countries have a very diverse tourist sector that is rooted in their civilisations. We can also learn a lot from each other’s tourism sector as it is a very strategic sector that can create jobs,” he added. “We are also going to sign an agreement on air transport with Air India,” he said at an event organised to announce the opening of the Morocco Tourism office in New Delhi. However, the location and date of opening of the

office has not been decided yet, a senior Moroccon diplomat said. With 7 per cent GDP growth rate, rising personal income levels, changing lifestyles, huge middle class, availability of low-cost airfares and diverse travel packages, India is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing outbound travel markets in the world, said Mr. Adel El Fakir, Director General of Moroccan National Tourist Office. “Indian tourists are among the world’s highest-spending globetrotters. Their spending power has been estimated to be four times that of the Chinese and Japanese which justifies the need for a planned strategic campaign for Morocco in India,” he said. “Morocco Tourism have 17 tourism offices are present around the world and the New Delhi office would be the first in south Asia, second in Asia (after Beijing). The new Moroccan Tourism office will help us understand what Indian tourists are looking for. The office will not only serve as a platform to promote tourism but also give professional information to various stakeholders,” Mr. El Fakir added.

Regional Victoria’s stunning natural beauty provides the backdrop to a host of accommodation, cafes, restaurants, pubs, wineries, breweries and activities that welcome furry babies and their owners.
