After a winter of weird weather, spring finally seems to be making an appearance and boy will I be glad to see the back of all the wind and rain. One of the big problems at this time of year is finding activities to do that are different, engaging and value for money as well as being inside! We’ve sent a local mum to review the Sealife Centre in Birmingham which celebrates it’s 20th anniversary this year. There is also a fabulously comprehensive list of activities in our What’s On Guide on page 8. If you are desperate for a break then enter our fabulous competition to win a Toddler Break at the gorgeous Hendra Holiday Park in Cornwall. Imagine your toes in the sand while the sun shines down on you, your little one building sandcastles and laughing. Then head straight to page 7 to enter. It could be you! Button batteries have been causing a lot of concern to local health providers and we wholeheartedly agree they should be kept out of reach of all littles ones. Would you know what to do if your child swallowed a battery? It’s a terrifying thought but forewarned is forearmed. Easter comes early this year, we’ve only just got rid of the Christmas chocolates, so enjoy the sweet treats and we’ll cross everything that the sun will come out for the holidays. Beware button batteries An accident and emergency doctor in Leicester is urging parents to keep button batteries away from their children and dispose of them properly. The batteries are in many cards, children’s toys and books and when swallowed, have caused the deaths of a number of young children over the last few years . Dr Rachel Rowlands, Consultant in children’s emergency medicine at the Leicester Royal Infirmary told the Leicester Mercury recently: “If the battery gets stuck in the windpipe or stomach it can make an electrical circuit and the battery produces caustic soda. “This can not only kill but it can leave children with burns and they need to keep having operations.” She and other medics, including CBeebies favourite Dr Ranj Singh, are calling for manufacturers to put a coating on the batteries to prevent them from burning children and to make them less attractive. Leicester City Council issued guidelines for parents last year which is available online and at children’s centres. It says children under six are at the most risk and recommends:

s e se rp r as ho te cl st as e E ew t r N oun fte C ta in tar s

Fun classes in warm pools, promoting skills and water confidence in small classes taught using the principles of the alexander technique.

- Always keep batteries safely out of children’s reach and securely fastened into toys/cards etc. - Dispose of used batteries correctly through kerbside recycling or at certain retailers. - Only buy toys from reputable toy shops and make sure they are CE marked. - If you think your child may have swallowed a button battery act quickly. - Take them straight to A&E or dial 999 for an ambulance - Do not allow your child to eat or drink - Do not try and make your child sick.

Sealife adventure

The National Sealife Centre, Birmingham celebrates its 20th birthday this year, older than both the London Aquarium and the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. There are more than 60 displays of freshwater and marine life at its home in Brindleyplace. We noticed straight away how bright, clean and engaging the initial displays were. It has the look of a place renovated in recent memory, and it isn’t an attraction which builds you up gently with a few low level displays before showing you the good stuff. As soon as the entrance fee is paid the ‘experience’ begins and there are no grubby corners or frayed edges to this underwater theme. I have never seen such a clean penguin area – no green water, clean glass and toddler-friendly heights so little ones can actually see what’s going on without being lifted up. The penguins clearly love to perform!

We sent a Leicester mum to the National Sealife Centre to see if her little Nemo would have fun!

There’s a large tank – again at accessible height – giving kids the chance to get up close to the fish, as well as dozens of small tanks featuring jellyfish, seahorses and starfish. If educational and interactive is your thing there is plenty to choose from – seeing if you can jump as high as a penguin, touching crabs in the interactive rock pool, letting you know that starfish grow their arms back! Of course the main attraction is always going to be the vast ocean tunnel – and it doesn’t disap-

point with its nurse sharks, rays, and a large green turtle called Molokai, who is 39, eats broccoli, weighs 20 stone and splashes if he’s late getting fed. For special occasions you can book a VIP feeding experience – either turtle, penguins or sharks. We opted for sharks and spend a good hour with an aquarist being shown how to put the fish onto the feeding pole, which fish needed to be given which food for dietary reasons, with at least 45 minutes of the hour spent actually feeding the sharks in the ocean tank.We found it a great way to engage in a controlled environment. With prices from £65 for the VIP feeding experiences (includes general admission) and general admission from £12.50 per person if you book ahead online (under 3s free), it’s a wonderful place to discover what lives underwater and why we should protect and preserve it - even from landlocked Leicestershire. Year of the Monkey Chinese New Year brings us the year of the Monkey and monkeys at Twycross Zoo are sure to join the celebrations as they become the main focus of half-term activities. A special programme of events for all to enjoy will run until Sunday 21st February. The zoo has 20 species of monkeys, 8 of which are threatened with extinction, and a new trail will take the visitors around all of the monkey enclosures, providing a fun way to learn. Upon completion of the trail, visitors can enter a prize draw to win a Family Pass with winners being drawn each day of the celebrations at 3pm. The zoo will celebrate Chinese culture and traditions with decorations and children will be invited to take part in Chinese paper folding workshops where they can make their own Chinese lanterns to take home. In addition, the

zoo’s main restaurant at Himalaya Centre will offer Chinese buffet-style food. Dr Charlotte Macdonald, Director of Life Sciences says, “We are keen to join in the Chinese New Year celebrations and use this festive opportunity to highlight in an entertaining way how Twycross Zoo contributes to the conservation of endangered monkey species. The trail is an excellent, fun activity showcasing our amazing animals and making a great day out even better.” Contact www.twycrosszoo.org for more details.

Chocolate crispy nests red noses and reindeer faces at can be added at Christmas.

Makes 6 50g chocolate (dark works best but use whatever you have) 25g raisins or sultanas 1 Tablespoon Golden Syrup 1oz butter 30g popped rice cereal, cornflakes, shredded wheat

This is a lovely recipe which does not require the use of an oven or even a bun tray and involves a lot of stirring, finger licking and decorating. The classic rice crispie cake recipe is used for nests in springtime, add a cherry for Comic Relief

Melt the chocolate, golden syrup and butter in a heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Make sure the bowl does not touch the water. Once everything is melted stir it all to until blended then remove the bowl and leave to cool a little. In a large bowl mix the cereal and the dried fruit and pour in the chocolate mixture. Gently stir until everything is covered in chocolate. Spoon into paper cases and get creative with your toppings. Cherries, jelly beans, chocolate eggs. Chill everything in the fridge for a couple of hours to firm up. They will keep for 2 to 3 days.
