Hello!

In this issue:

Brrr. There's definitely a chill in the air - there's no denying winter is here. But after the wonderful summer we've had, I'm actually loving it. Wrapping up for bracing walks on the beach, followed by hot chocolate... what’s not to like?

2. Cover Star: Water Babies

The colder weather hasn't dampened my little girl's love of the water - we'll be swimming all year round! Which is one of the reasons I'm so pleased to have Water Babies as our main feature. If you're thinking about going swimming with your little one, make sure you read their advice on page 2. And when the weather's a bit dodgy, panic not - we've got loads of activities for you and your children. There's a new soft play opened up at Heartlands and fabulous new classes starting all over the county. Go to pages 10-18 to find out What's On near you.

We've also done the hard work for you, and rounded up all the best Christmas Events in one handy guide on page 6. And if you're for gift ideas, check out Tinkebu toys on page 5, or Emma's Little Book Nook on page 23. And finally - I'm ridiculously excited to have teamed up with the talented Cassie, from Cornwall Caricatures, who has designed our brand new activity page - not to be missed on page 25. As ever, please let our advertisers know you found them here - that's what keeps Tots About going! Have a wonderful Christmas & New Year!

Top Tips For Swimming With Why Swimming? Living in Cornwall, we’re lucky enough to be surrounded by our beautiful beaches and the sea which means we all know what a vital skill swimming is. It’s really important we’re teaching our children about water safety from a young age. Not only is it an enriching and exciting experience for you and your baby, it’s an important life skill - drowning is still the 3rd highest cause of accidental death for children under 5 in the UK. Water Babies teach babies and children up to four years to be safe and confident in the water. They’ve shared their tops tips with us to give you and your little ones the most enjoyable experience!

beforehand to check temperature and quiet times. You don’t want a sensory overload for your baby. Or book a class which is suitable for the age of your child. Temperature The pool needs to be warm enough for babies. Babies under 12 lbs or 12 weeks need a hydro pool, around 35° Babies & toddlers over 12 lbs or 12 weeks need pools around 30°

Before you go...

What to pack...

Immunisations NHS advice is that you can take your baby swimming from birth, before their vaccinations.

Swim Nappies paper disposable swim nappies aren’t designed to hold anything, so we recommend all baby swimmers use a double nappy

system. That's a paper or reusable swim nappy first, with a neoprene nappy on top that has snug bands on the waist and legs to keep any nasties contained long enough for you to notice and hop out. Neoprene wetsuit in case the pool is cool. Favourite toy for positive associations with the water Towel to leave on the poolside for a smoother transition back into the changing rooms. In colder weather, wrap it around a hot water bottle to warm up! Hat for afterwards as babies lose heat through their heads. In the water... Word association & repetition this is a really great way to utilise your baby’s ability to form associations and develop their skills in the water. In our lessons we first use this simple and gentle method to trigger babies' gag reflex in preparation for underwater swims. Because they elicit the same response on the surface as well as underwater, it means we can utilise this from the start! This skill is all about teaching children not to panic if they fall into water: sit baby upright, say their name (to get their attention), ‘are you ready’ and then ‘go’, then pop a handful of water over their face and wipe it away with the same hand action. You can practice this at home in the bath too and you’ll see the skill come on in leaps and bounds in the pool!

Swim Position lay your baby on their tummy on your palms with your thumbs over their shoulders. Cup your wrists together and keep eye contact, and gently move them head first as you walk backwards. Back floating this is the first chance babies have to experience their own balance and buoyancy in the water so it really stimulates all four quarters of the body and gets them moving. Gently lay them on their back with one hand under their head/neck and one under their bottom. Find out more... Water Babies classes are available across Cornwall. Handcrafted sustainable wooden toys

Looking for a unique gift for Christmas? Look no further than Tinkebu - beautiful wooden toys handcrafted in Cornwall. Tinkebu was founded in 2017 by Jaime Tinker. True to his name, Jaime had been tinkering with wood for many years. "Surrounded by friends and family having babies, I found myself beginning to make toys and furniture as gifts. This need grew with the arrival of our first child, and our reluctance to fill our house (and landfills) with garish plastic.” A toy box for his niece lit the touch-paper for starting Tinkebu. Then when his daughter, Tabitha, came along, following a few sketches, Hamish the highland cow rocker was born. The range has now expanded to include tractors, campervans, boats, baby gyms and other farm animals. Every product is lovingly handmade in their workshop in Truro. Because of this, each piece is unique, and unlike so many plastic toys that end up in lofts or just thrown away, they hope they’ll remain in the family for a long time to come. Tinkebu are committed to sustainable manufacture; all toys are made from reclaimed wood and they are an official partner of the charity One Tree Planted. So for every toy they sell they also plant a tree via reforestation projects across the globe. More toys and more trees in the world. What’s not to like? You can see the full range at their shop: www. tinkebu.com Or follow them at: tinkebucornwall tinkebucornwall

Title: Are you there little reindeer? Author: Sam Taplin Illustrator: Essi Kimpimaki The newest in this series of peepthrough books has arrived just in time for Christmas. Go on an adventure to find the little reindeer! Meet other friendly characters along the way including a fox, a squirrel and a snowman. This beautifully illustrated book offers lots of questioning opportunities and talking time with your little ones. The sturdy board pages are great for learning to turn pages and give the book a long life. Plus, they're the perfect size for little hands. You and your little ones will love peeping through the holes together and exploring the textured pages in this hide-and-seek storybook. If your little one enjoys the "That's not my..." range, this will be a gorgeous addition to your bookshelf.

Information Sheet 16

Safer Sleep: Changing Temperatures With the weather turning cooler many people worry about keeping their babies and little ones at the right temperature. Cornwall Resus are on hand to provide some easy advice and top tips. Avoid letting your baby get too hot:

38C or if you are worried about their health.

It is important that your baby does not get too hot or too cold when they sleep. A baby sleeping bag or well-fitting sheets and blankets are all you should need to keep them warm - never use duvets, quilts or pillows for babies under one year. Bear in mind a folded blanket provides twice the insulation.

If your home is below the ideal temperature in Winter:

You should check your baby’s body temperature by looking for sweating or by feeling your baby’s tummy, back or neck – your baby’s hands and feet will usually be cooler and that’s normal. If your baby is hot, remove one or more layers of bedclothes. Babies who are unwell with a fever need fewer, not more, bedclothes. It is important to make sure that your baby is a comfortable temperature – not too hot or too cold. A room temperature of 16–20C is ideal for your baby, when growing up in the UK. This feels quite cold to a lot of people, so using a room thermometer can help check the temperature. If you are using light bedding such as sheets and blankets, they should be tucked in carefully with no loose ends that could obstruct your baby’s breathing. Similarly, baby sleeping bags should be comfortable but well fitted, especially around the neck and arms, so your baby cannot wriggle down inside. A normal temperature in babies and children is about 36.4C (97.5F), but this can vary slightly. A fever is usually considered to be a temperature of 38C (100.4F) or above. It is recommended that you use a digital thermometer under your baby’s arm to measure their temperature. Seek medical advice if your baby is under three months old and has a temperature over

It is rarely necessary to keep your heating on all night, and adding an extra layer will usually help. Remember not to add a hat to your baby when they are indoors, as their head is important for maintaining their body temperature by releasing heat. If you do feel your home is too cold and you want to leave the heating on all night, make sure it is set at a low temperature, and certainly no higher than 20C. Why do babies who are unwell need fewer layers? When babies feel unwell, with a cold or fever, they may be warmer than usual. It is important that you put fewer layers on an unwell baby so they have the opportunity to lower their body temperature – don’t feel tempted to wrap an unwell baby up more than usual. If your baby shows signs of being significantly unwell you should seek medical advice.

A room temperature of 16-20C, with light bedding or a lightweight well-fitting sleeping bag, is comfortable and safe for sleeping babies. Advice on room temperature is intended as a guide. Every baby is different so while it’s important to be informed about overheating, you need to check your baby regularly to see if he or she is too hot or too cold.
