Mid Power LEDs The Driving Force Behind the LED Lighting Revolution By John Turney - Divisional Manager YEG Opto Much has been said about LED lighting, but many believe that it still remains to be proved and indeed is a technology that may take many years to be universally adopted. But a quiet revolution is under way. Where and how did that revolution start? We all now take LED backlights for flat screen TVs for granted as they bring thinner panels to our living rooms and a brighter more reliable viewing experience. What powered the changeover from old cold cathode backlight TV screens was the development and mass production of mid-power LEDs. Leading TV makers such as Samsung needed to work on both technology and manufacturing costs to create the LED backlit TV screen. The experiences and innovations are now applied to a new range of LEDs that are employed within numerous types of lighting. The mid power LED has now been adopted as a pivotal technology to bring LEDs into the mass market. Historically the market leaders made 13 watt LEDs to be employed in lighting systems. Smaller LEDs struggled to deliver good efficacies and due to relatively lower production rates and outdated product designs the cost per lumen was just not economical. Driven by flat screen backlighting and feeding off of large investments and innovations in extremely high volume automation an important change happened and the traditional 1-3 watt LED’s efficacy and cost per lumen has been surpassed with mid-power LEDs. With their adoption in lighting a turning point is being reached. So what are mid power LEDs? Typically they are tiny devices measuring a few millimetres square. Seoul Semiconductor’s latest device has a footprint of 2 x 3 mm and the Samsung’s MP23 series 2.3 x 2.3mm both with a height of less than 0.7 mm. With those dimensions

they weigh very little and thus the hundreds of them that are required to provide the light source for a ceiling luminaire will weigh less than 250grams. In broad terms their light output flux and efficacies vary according to the colour temperature of the light produced, its Colour Rendering Index (CRI) and the current running through the LED. Under certain conditions greater than140 lumens/watt are achievable. Mid-power LEDs dissipate 0.2 to 1.2 watts and are used in closely spaced arrays. With the individual light sources close together, a homogeneous light panel can be achieved with minimal light loss by using an inexpensive diffuser so a continuous light is seen by the viewer without hot spots or glare.
target parameters are less and less. Nevertheless makers test each LED as it leaves the production line and classify it according to the properties of its light output. This clarification is called ‘binning’. Mid power LEDs falling in the same bin are held together and then shipped in lots 2000 to 5000 pieces to the users. So where does this fit in? Increasingly high specification lighting schemes can be achieved by employing the LEDs binning to best effect. The laborious selection of bins to match LEDs is now gone as manufacturers such as Samsung offer a range of mid-power LEDs at fixed colour temperatures with 3 step Macadam variations. This makes difference between light sources a thing of the past. New ways of mixing LED bins into kits that will always produce the same colour coordinates are about to be released and those will possibly take away the price premiums asked by makers for closely binned LEDs.
In modern offices, work areas and retail spaces the quality of artificial light sets the scene and enhances the experience of those in it. Also in the home or on the street careful consideration is required to provide light of the desired quality. The driving parameters behind this are the colour temperature of the light coupled with the lights quality given by the CRI. But not just the colour temperature and CRI are to be considered. The consistency of colour temperature between light sources is demanded by lighting designers to produce top quality lighting schemes. Tolerances of material properties and processes in the making of mid-power LEDs lead to small variations in optical parameters. Research and development and the perfecting of production techniques means that increasingly the variations from the

LED light sources are still more costly than most of their rivals. LED efficacy is now putting them above almost all other artificial light sources. The interplay of these two factors has caused designer and user uncertainty and greatly reduced the up-take of LED sources. But the balance is now swinging in favour of quality LED sources employing mid-power LEDs because of their need for little or no replacement or maintenance. Fundamental to that is the reliability and life of the LEDs given by LM80 figures.
Mid Power LEDs Indeed it could be that TV screens can now be viewed as the turning point in the design of luminaries and lights for the next 25 years
So what is LM80? IES LM-80-2008 is the industry standard that defines the methods for testing LED packages to determine their lumen depreciation characteristics. The test data now enables LED luminaire and lamp manufacturers to satisfy ENERGY STAR® lumen maintenance. LED makers evaluate their LEDs over 6000 -10,000 hours at different temperatures and then from that data expected statistical lifetime data can be accurately produced.

As the UK collectively retards its clocks, I can’t help but think of lighting manufacturers the length and breadth of the country, rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of the dark evenings to come, and the national dash to renew light fittings. Assuming it really is the boom time of the year for the industry, presumably we all suddenly notice that we’ve been living and working with poor, or non-existent lighting for the past year? It’s been lovely to meet new people and renew acquaintances at the recent spate of shows and exhibitions, but it’s been a busy few weeks, hasn’t it? I was starting to feel as if the only subjects we’re covering at TL are event-related, so it comes as something of a relief to reach the end of the late summer show season with a final nod to the success that was PLASA this month (p67) and just LuxLive to go before the end of the year. One point of note is that, despite the on going, double-dip, doom and gloom, on-going misery of the recession, visitor numbers (both from the UK and further afield), at all of the events, seem to be holding up, whci can only be good for the brave exhibitors who not only spend a small fortune on stands and R&D to get new products to market in time to launch at these events, but who also have to staff them, often at great expense to the business. It won’t be long before we start looking ahead to Christmas with all of its excesses, including some of the lighting installations around the country. Next month we’ll be bringing you a selection of some of the best festive lighting designs from our stores and shopping centres – each guaranteed to make little faces shine with pleasure and anticipation, and even an old heart beat a little quicker. Although to the independent store manager in a small Suffolk town who thinks it’s acceptable to hang Christmas lights and decorations on 30 August – it isn’t! I found myself doing cartoon-like eye rubbing when I saw them. This month’s TL features some interesting case studies, including the lighting design for Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium, which houses two sporting teams, which play in different colours. Instead of re-painting twice a week, the management came up with the idea to colour the arena and surroundings using light – innovative and so much more practical. I must confess to a weird love of bridges – old, new, contemporary or traditional with crenelated stone, it makes no difference. I love them all. I think it’s something to do with their representation of a journey – they call me to cross over and see what’s on the other side. In recent years, it has become the norm for bridges to be lit – usually to stunning effect, so I’m pandering to my own obsession this month with a look at some of the most stunning. LIKE-MINDED GATHERING The recent RCA event, Urban Spirit of Light was presented by Megaman in association with the Helen Hamlyn Centre for design at The Royal College of Art. The seminar speakers included Mark Sutton Vane of Sutton Vane Associates; light artist and sculptor, Raphael Daden; and Megan Charnley and Tom Jarvis from the RCA. The discussion looked at three main questions: How can embedding light within urban landscapes promote social interaction of culturally diverse communities? How can architects, designers and planners deliver a reduction in energy whilst continuing to meet the needs of local residents? How can inventive lighting schemes transform under-lit pockets of urban space? The event also saw the launch of In The Shade, a publication by Megan Charnley and Tom Jarvis of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design. The company fought off tough competition to win the Product Innovation category of the Retrofit Awards 2012 for its TiLite luminaire. The sealed unit design, which stops dust, bacteria and insects from gathering around warm light fittings and becoming a potential source of infection impressed the judges. TiLite, which has received support from Shadow Health Minister, Andy Burnham, was the only lighting solution to be shortlisted in the Awards, which reward and celebrate design, engineering and construction excellence that prolongs the active life of buildings and infrastructure. Tom Harrison, MD said: ‘We’re thrilled to win this category in Product Innovation as this truly reflects what MHA Lighting is all about- a forward thinking firm which takes pride in finding innovative lighting solutions for a whole range of clients. ‘TiLite means that NHS Trusts with older estates are able to improve their infection control rates, sustainability and carbon emissions without having to look at new build options.’ Paul Finch, editorial director of The Architects’ Journal noted: ‘Retrofit continues to be critical in upgrading the built environment to meet the challenge of a lowcarbon future. Simon says Simon Pengelly’s name is synonymous with bespoke, high quality furniture design, but he admits to an affinity with lighting. TL caught up with him to discuss his latest work - a wall light for Italian manufacturer, Foscarini
P
engelly Design has an enviable portfolio spanning furniture, lighting, product, interiors and transport and in 2011, principal, Simon Pengelly was the winner of the coveted Compasso d’Oro, Italy s most coveted design award. The company has been branching out into lighting design, and with the recent launch of Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class Suite, and a new wall light for Foscarini, 2012 has consolidated the studio’s international reputation. Pengelly is recognised for the understated elegance of designs that are rigorous in their engineering detail and functionality whilst maintaining a purity and lightness of touch. The studio applies a holistic approach, treating each project as a problem-solving exercise. A careful balance is adhered, creating a practical, pure and emotional response to each brief, with functionality and subtle detail revealing itself as the product is used and enjoyed. According to Pengelly: ‘There are few things more exciting and interesting to us than being able to make our mark with understated design’, so what’s the background to the man behind the company, and where’s he going next?

Where did your interest in design stem from? Were you brought up in a particularly artistic atmosphere? Yes, both my parents and my sisters are creative people. Dad, now retired, was a furniture designer.
You founded Pengelly Design in 1993; what were you working on back then? In the early days, I was mainly occupied with designing for Habitat, but I was already beginning to formulate my own furniture range.
Where did you learn your trade? Originally from my Dad, who trained me at the bench during weekends and school holidays.
Where do you think your interest in lighting has come from? It’s difficult to say - I’ve always had an affinity with lighting.
What’s the most prestigious project you’ve worked on to date? It’s got to be the Upper Class Suite for Virgin Atlantic. It was a huge project; it took four-anda-half very challenging and enjoyable years to complete. We were tasked with increasing passenger numbers, lengthening the bed and providing more personal space for each

You’re obviously expanding your design work to include lighting with the launch of Innerlight. So were you involved in the lighting element for the Virgin project? Yes, very much so. We designed the individual passenger environment, which includes lights for reading, ambient lighting and highlights. Additionally, we had quite a lot of input in the cabin lighting, which is all about creating different moods during long haul flights.
What do you feel is the most important element of the lighting design for a commercial interior, and is that necessarily the same for a domestic job?

Like a lot of our work, we see the boundaries between domestic and commercial as being blurred and we therefore try to create products that cross over between the two.
How do you tackle a new project – can you take us through the process? It depends entirely on the brief, as each project is different, and requires a tailored approach.
So how did you approach designing your first light fitting? Was the brief very different from what you were used to when designing furniture? The brief was for a wall light. We started by asking ourselves ‘why does a wall light have to look like a light seeing as it’s going to spend most of the time switched off’. If it’s switched off, then it’s not working unless it could also be considered as a sculpture in its own right – one that uses ambient light to enhance its form, making it work whilst switched off.
What are you currently working on? At the moment, it’s a mixture of more lighting, furniture, transport and product designs – so a very mixed bag.

What innovations in the world of lighting excite you? To me, one of the most important innovations of the moment is the aim to make solar-powered lighting more affordable, so it’s there for use in times to come when the need to generate more electricity becomes a problem.
The LED – saviour of the 21st century, or a monstrosity? I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s a saviour. The LED certainly has its advantages and is a leading technology …it’s definitely not a monstrosity!
What about the emphasis currently being put on LED as the light source of choice for almost every application? Are you happy to design using them if that’s what the client wants, or do you prefer to be able to experiment with a variety of light sources? We like to have the freedom to design using the most appropriate light source for the particular application we’re looking at.
In your opinion, what’s the best light source currently available? It has to be LED, because it is probably the most versatile.
On a more personal note, can you describe what makes you tick? Being given the opportunity to solve problems.
So who, or what inspires you? Anybody who is interested and passionate enough about a subject to do something about it!

If you had to change career now, what would you like to do? I’d be an entomologist.
Really? So assuming the answer isn’t, ‘up to your elbows in creepy crawlies’, where do you hope to be in 10 years’ time? Still standing - and hopefully doing more of what we do now.
Who’s your favourite lighting designer? Marc Sadler. The appeal of Sadler’s work is in its unpretentiousness, work that interprets the language of material and manufacturing characteristics in an expressive and accessible way.
Finally, how would you describe your life? Busy and happy.... and made to look good by a wonderful and understanding wife, and a great team of colleagues.

Award-winning advances LED Engin, Inc. has won the ‘Advances in Lighting’ category of the annual e-Legacy Awards. The competition winners were announced at a gala awards ceremony in London. The prize was specifically awarded for the company’s ViviLux family of high-efficiency, high CRI, compact, single LED emitters which, combined with secondary total internal reflection (TIR) lenses, produce up to twice the centre-beam lux of arraybased LEDs with reflectors. This means that, for a given level of lighting intensity on a target area, only half the energy is required. LED fixtures based on the company’s LuxiGen platform are found in entertainment lighting and commercial applications, including retail stores and hotels, where well-controlled levels of directional light are needed. ‘The newly-introduced Advances In Lighting award was the most fiercely contested aspect of the competition this year, which makes LED Engin’s achievement all the more impressive,’ commented Alistair Winning of EPD Magazine. ‘The company is a deserving winner and we look forward to seeing more of their innovations in the year ahead.’
Financing domestic LEDs
SECURE FUNDING ArmadilloLED has secured funding totaling £230,000 from two private investors to help fund product development and continued expansion into new international markets. The deal was supported by Chris Chapman of My Business FD, the London and Cambridge-based provider of part time financial directors to growing companies, which has been part of Armadillo’s management team for two years, working with them on all financial aspects of the firm’s growth strategy. Chapman said: ‘Armadillo has been a fantastic company to work with. It is typical of Britain’s SME sector that is right now driving our economic recovery. The Armadillo team absolutely understands that the right management team is key to building sustainable growth. Since we have worked with Armadillo, the business has trebled its investment in research and development which is quite frankly the key to success in a competitive global marketplace.’
… And for businesses From lighting the Olympic opening ceremony to decorating Tower Bridge (and saving 40% on its energy bills in the process), LEDs have certainly made their mark this summer. Now LED specialist, Light Planet is raising the bar further with a new finance initiative to support the implementation of energy efficient lighting technology by businesses. Having successfully raised £5m to fund the pay-as-yousave scheme, Light Planet is offering businesses LED lighting solutions worth up
to £50,000, giving them the power to reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint without having to produce up-front investment or commit to loan schemes. Despite the potential benefits, it is often difficult to secure investment, particularly for retrofit projects, a problem compounded by the current economic climate. Rather than expecting organisations to bear the brunt of investment, Light Planet will simply recoup 80 per cent of the financial savings
achieved as a result of installing this energy efficient technology. MD, Simon Leggett commented: ‘We have complete faith in the potential of LED solutions to deliver both significant energy and monetary savings. Our new finance initiative will give more businesses access to the many benefits of the technology and encourage increased adoption of energy efficiency measures.’
Flux has announced that its luxury domestic LED product range will be supported by the Switch & Save financing scheme; offering a quality, money-saving lighting solution without the high-cost barriers.Through the pioneering scheme developed with its financial partner, Hitatchi, Flux plans to offer a convenient solution to households looking to switch to LED lighting. According to the company, the benefits include a potential reduction in both a household’s energy costs by 85 per cent as well as its carbon footprint. The scheme aims to provide consumers with a two-year interest-free facility, with repayments covered by the anticipated savings the household will expect to make. Tracy Fearn, global brand manager at Flux commented: ‘We are delighted to be launching Flux LEDs and Switch and Save to the British public. The brand is innovative, aesthetically beautiful, high quality and competitively priced. He describes how portable device designers can extend battery run-time by improving the efficiency of LED backlight systems, explaining the benefits of an LED driver topology that is today little used in mobile device displays
Comparing driver topologies: the search for higher efficiency in mobile phone LED backlight system
In the latest generation of smartphones, which feature large displays suitable for showing web pages and video, the LED backlight system is one of the biggest power loads in the device, and has a marked effect on overall power consumption and battery run-time. What is more, users’ expectations have grown much more demanding in the past two years: they now expect to be able to play video and access the Internet for several hours without recharging the battery – yet both activities require the processor and backlight system to work at a high rate. And as users demand ever-larger displays, the number of LEDs in the backlighting system grows, putting even more pressure on the power budget.
Operation of the backlighting system There are three building blocks in a backlighting system: a battery to store energy, the LED driver, and the LEDs. To increase run-time, extra power - or power savings - need to be found in one or more of these three blocks. Increasing the size of the battery would add energy capacity, but a more expensive, bigger, and heavier battery is an unappetising option for the mobile phone designer. The LEDs form part of the display assembly, placed on a flexible PCB, and emitting light from the edge into a diffuser behind the LCD panel. The number of LEDs depends on the display size, available space and required resolution. The forward voltage of the LED is normally in the range 3.0-3.4V. Today’s mobile phones can contain as many as 12 LEDs. The arrangement of the LEDs can vary: for instance, all the LEDs could be connected together at their

In order to maintain or prolong battery runtime while driving larger displays, backlight system designers should consider implementing a multi-string topology
anode, with an output pin at each cathode. This connection scheme can be driven by a capacitive backlight driver, and is widely used in small displays. A more popular approach in smartphones, which have bigger displays and hence more LEDs, is to connect all the LEDs in series as a single string. The advantage of this topology is that it needs only two connection pins to the display. At ams, we use a nomenclature, Series x Strings, to describe topologies with one or more strings of LEDs. For instance, a single string of eight LEDs connected in series is described as 8S x 1 (see figure 1).
Reducing the losses An inductive DC-DC converter is more suitable for driving single or multiple strings of LEDs than a capacitive driver is. And the more LEDs are connected in series, the lower the efficiency of the inductive DC-DC converter falls. The problem is the result of both switching losses and core losses in the inductor; these losses get higher, the higher the voltage at the converter. The illustration at figure 2 shows the effect of a rise in output voltage on the conversion efficiency of the AS3676 (at a constant output power). A comparable fall in efficiency would be found in any inductive DC-DC converter on the market today (see figure 2). So why does output voltage increase as the number of LEDs in a string rises? The reason is that the output voltage required from the DC-DC converter is calculated by multiplying the forward voltage of the LEDs by the number of LEDs, plus the compliance voltage of the current sink. For example, in a single string of 12 LEDs with a forward voltage of 3.2V, the DC-DC converter needs to boost the output voltage to 12 x 3.2 + 0.5V = 38.9V. (0.5V is the compliance voltage of the current sink.) By comparison, in a multi-string configuration of, for example, 4S x 3, the maximum voltage would be 4 x 3.2 + 0.5 = 13.3V. In the multi-string configuration, the lower voltage of the DC-DC converter, 13.3V, results in lower switching losses and core losses than in a converter operating at 38.9V. This results in better efficiency, and also allows the use of smaller external components. Drawing on the phenomenon shown in figure 2, the improved efficiency of the multi-string topology can be seen to be attributable to the reduced output voltage of the converter.

Clearly, system designers considering whether to adopt a multi-string topology will regret losing the simplicity of the two-pin connection to the display module, which the single string topology affords them. Indeed, they can evaluate techniques for improving the efficiency of single-string designs, such as: •Increasing the size of the inductor •Reducing the switching frequency •Reducing capacitive losses at the switching node •Using a switching transistor with a lower capacitance between drain-gate and drain-source Unfortunately, footprint and height are both under extreme pressure inside a smart phone; in particular, manufacturers are constantly seeking to make their designs thinner, and this counts against any move to use a bulky inductor.

Conclusion The conclusion, then, is clear: in order to maintain or prolong battery runtime while driving larger displays, backlight system designers should consider implementing a multi-string topology. This is because, in multiple strings, the output voltage of the DC-DC converter is lower than for a single string with the same number of LEDs, and inductive DC-DC converters operate more efficiently at lower output voltages, resulting in longer battery run-time. Multi-string designs can be implemented with ams converters, including the AS3492 [figure 3], a 2MHz backlight driver for up to ten LEDs (2S x 5) offering efficiency up to 90% with a coil of just 2mm x 1.2mm x 1mm; and the AS3677 [figure 4], an integrated lighting management unit including a 1MHz DC-DC converter with integrated 25V NMOS transistor, and driving up to 15 LEDs in a 5S x 3 configuration (see figures three and four).

Let me tell it how it is:
STILL IN THE DARK? Delaying the use of LED until the technology develops further will most probably cost you real money in the long term. Over the last decade, LED output has improved by 2000 per cent and the cost of equipment has fallen. But while you’re waiting for the next evolution, another’s also in the pipeline. The net result is that your project is at a standstill - and you’ll never benefit from measurable energy savings that LED delivers. Sitting on the fence creates a ‘waiting cost’, and it needs to be calculated against replacing the lamp and luminaire. A quality lighting installation that reduces glare helps staff, increases vertical illuminance, impacts on work throughput and should reduce staff sickness and absenteeism. Improving profitability through productivity makes perfect sense.
So what’s the next step? Let’s be clear, replacing existing fluorescent-based lighting systems with LED solid state lighting requires a financial investment that delivers both long-term benefits and a short- to medium-term return on investment (ROI). A qualified lighting designer with
experience in LED will develop a scheme to deploy the latest lighting techniques that meet current legislation. The design will include calculations for how people operate within the space. It will distribute the lighting at the prescribed levels where required for tasks, and at lower levels in walkway and transit areas to maximise energy efficiency.
Making the right choice Equipment needs careful consideration as LED provides illumination through single chip, multi-chip or ‘chip on board’ (COB) technologies. Specifying Colour Temperature (CCT) and Colour Rendering (CRI) are important, as the lumen performance of the luminaire could depend on it. Underspecifying the CRI will improve lumen performance but at the cost of a qualitative and aesthetically pleasing solution, one in which may not be ideal for working in. Overheating is the major enemy of LEDs, as it limits lamp and luminaire performance and permanently damages the life characteristics. Heat has to be transferred to the ambient environment, and this heat transfer takes place primarily via conduction. An increase of 10 degrees C at the junction point reduces the LED lamp life by 30 per cent.

‘Over the last decade, LED output has improved by 2000 per cent and the cost of equipment has fallen’ LED lighting - when correctly operated - could offer lamp life of approximately 40,000 hours with little or no ongoing maintenance during that period. Calculating ROI is often the determining factor when committing to project expenditure, but don’t forget that the benefits of providing higher levels of illumination only where it is required, and the addition of lighting controls will shorten the period of return further.
Take control LED is an efficient light source that provides instant illumination and can be controlled through a number of systems. For offices, it is ideal as it provides the vertical illuminance required to make the environment feel pleasing, and by installing fittings that dim automatically on the activity of presence combined with that of daylight, allow the building user to maximise energy savings. In ancillary areas, there tends to be numerous short-term switching cycles. With LED, periods of lighting beyond automatic detection can be kept to a minimum, which is a major advantage over CFL. Emergency lighting is always an issue as the majority of commercial installations have integral emergency equipment within standard luminaires. These in turn require high levels of power to maintain the batteries that power fluorescent light sources. Installing an alternative, standalone LED specification will allow for a more uniform driven solution that meets the legislative performance requirements, while minimising the parasitic load required to maintain the system.
Talking $ To allow for the true cost of energy to be realised, first take into account current energy costs, and predicted cost increases based on Government statistics. Maintenance costs need to be added in respect of uplift in cost of lamps and equipment over time; and
whether cleaning of existing luminaires takes place. All of these figures must be part of the calculation. The big question to be asked is how much and how quick? The answer is not so easy, as every project is different in respect of the task being carried out, the size of the application, the task areas, the current lighting, the operating hours, continuous or infrequent use, the building orientation for daylight benefits, etc. The best solution is to ask for a survey of your building, and then consider the findings. However, a note of caution! This new solid-state technology is certainly very good - but make sure the advice comes from a knowledgeable source. For example, an office lit with 600x600mm recessed switch-start modules will consume in excess of 80W per fitting, while the LED equivalent will be higher performing and consume less than 45W. Adding in lighting control and dimming to the scheme could add to the already achieved 45 per cent saving.

Design to save It doesn’t stop there; designing the lighting installation to focus the light where it is needed rather than just everywhere, will provide additional energy savings and more importantly, either fewer or lower wattage fittings. Carefully designed installations that maximise the benefits of daylight and lighting control should, for an office environment that benefits for moderate natural illumination, provide savings of well in excess of 50 per cent. That can’t be all bad, can it? Yes, the bottom line will tell you instantly that a stateof-the-art LED lighting scheme requires substantial investment. But the sums should also demonstrate in more detail that over time, annual cost will diminish, as the savings achieved in energy and maintenance provide benefit and then reach the point of return. All savings beyond that point until the end of the equipment’s life are additional - and usually become substantial. So, can you afford to wait? I would say not; if you are not maximising your benefits in a qualitative and energy efficient lighting solution, then your competitors are. And where does that leave you? In the dark! Home to both Canadian football league team, the BC Lions and major league soccer team, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium is one of Canada’s premier venues – and an exceptionally busy place too. In addition to the sporting giants who perform there on a regular basis, it has hosted appearances by iconic figures including Pope John Paul II, Madonna, Michael Jackson and, of course, the cream of the world’s athletes during the Winter Olympics. Following a major upgrade, BC Place has become a landmark on Vancouver’s skyline and a place of pride for all British Columbians, due in no small part to the new lighting system, which not only adds to the stadium architecturally, but also allows BC Place to come alive for events, both from the inside and out.
What’s running the show? Controlling this new and sophisticated, integrated lighting system, which utilises energy-efficient LED fixtures from Lumenpulse, is a Pharos LPC 60, programmed with Pharos’ Designer software, specifically chosen to enable displays of a vast array of static or moving colour designs to be shown on both the outside surfaces of the stadium, and on the inside. More than nine acres of roof, clear façade panels on the sides of the building and roof support masts provide an incredible canvas for displays of both static and dynamic lighting, with more than 26,000 individual programmable lighting elements. As a stadium with two home teams, BC Place needed to be made to feel it belonged to both, so part of the brief for lighting designer, C M Kling & Associates was to create a way to completely transform the building, depending on which team was playing. The solution? Different colours and sequenced lighting now create identifiable signature scenes for each team when they’re in residence. Other features include special light shows of gradually moving, abstracted, colour-changing content on the façade that is set in tandem with fixed roof colours. These shows are scheduled before and during the games, and are paced so as not to distract either the audience or the players.

Getting down to details Jim Anderson, Lumenpulse’s director of application engineering, commented on a specific area that he felt simplified the entire project: ‘For my part, the power of the Pharos LPC, the ease of specification, installation, set up and programming, as well as the customer support throughout the project, are what made the difference. With 51 universes and 216 separate Art-Net nodes, we needed the horsepower of the LPC 60. During my testing, it was easy to map and create impressive effects quickly.’ Steve Bedford at EOS Lightmedia, who is responsible for programming the light shows, agreed, adding: ‘The LPC 60 gave me a stable and reliable platform from which to realise this large scale, high profile project. ‘The LED installation at BC Place is unique, in that the light shows and effects are simultaneously visible from the interior and exterior. The final installation is both a scripted part of the ticketed experience, and a high profile architectural installation. The flexible interface and control options allow fine-tuned cues to be executed by lighting consoles for big budget half-time shows, and by score-keepers for touchdowns and crowd messages, while allowing building systems to handle the necessary architectural commands and astronomical automation. ‘The interface has enabled me to manage and create unique content to effectively brand the stadium, the two professional sports franchises that call the stadium home, as well as the events and trade shows. The team provided brilliant and effective troubleshooting and support, particularly given that this project used a new LED product: everyone was extremely quick and effective in providing support for integrating the system.’ BC Place is illuminated from 5.30am to sunrise and from sunset to 10pm most nights. On event nights, the roof and Northern Lights display are lit until the conclusion of the event. BC Place Management have found that they can even utilise the lighting to bring awareness to events, charities and special causes that are important to all of the communities across British Columbia, by offering special lighting for dedicated charitable events and recognised causes. All in all, it sounds like a win-win situation.

A chance to shine LIA Student Lighting Design finalist, Simon Locke-Wheaton has joined tp24 as a graduate trainee designer. Locke-Wheaton studied 3D-Product Design at Plymouth University and submitted his LED wall design, Pop On Lights for this year’s final judging, where Shaun Davis, MD of tp24 saw it. For more than a decade, tp24 has been supplying of low energy lighting solutions to the domestic market, and for the past two years it has run a short programme for graduates, each year taking on one product designer, one graphic designer and one PR assistant. ‘Simon displayed a huge interest in lighting, and I think his design was actually the best in terms of a design for lighting. He had worked on the light source and had given a lot of thought to the manufacture and it flexibility, commented Davis. ‘Working for tp24 will give Simon a good view of the realities of product design and enable him to get into his chosen field by having experience in a full time role. Currently he is working with the tp24 design team on some new generation of light fittings for release later this year,’ he said.
ON TOP OF THE WORLD The new Danish research test centre for large wind turbines, located in Østerild is signaled using Obelux LED high-intensity aviation obstruction lights. The test centre comprises seven wind turbines up to 250m in height and two 250m-high light masts, equipped with Obelux LED high-intensity lights. The national wind test site was established by the Institute of Wind Energy, a vitally important reseach establishment for consolidating and expanding Denmark’s position within the wind energy sector. The light masts and LED lighting systems were erected and installed by YIT A/S. ‘Obelux LED obstruction lights were chosen due to their extremely long, maintenance-free life,’ cited Niels Riis. ‘LED lights will save us a lot of unplanned site visits compared to conventional light sources, and thus, decrease the total cost of ownership.’ Since the masts are 250m high, the lights will be installed on three levels: 83m, 167m and 250m above ground level. On each level there will be three 120° beam light heads which cover the full 360°, as required by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). During the day, the flashing white light effective intensity is 200,000 cd and it delivers a total of 120,000 lumens. At night, the light is reduced to 2,000 cd, and twilight mode will give 20,000 cd.
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS Inlico, the supplier of components to the lighting industry is moving to bigger premises. Managing director, Tom Doneghan commented on the move: ‘The increase in sales that we have experienced over recent years means that we have outgrown our old place. ‘Our new offices and warehouse will cater for future expansion with plenty of room for the new products we have planned.’ The company’s new home will be at 26-36 Frankfort Street, Newtown, Birmingham, B19 2YH.
Safety first The Oslon Black Flat from Osram Opto Semiconductors has been designed specifically for automotive frontlighting systems. Equipped with state-of-the-art chip and packaging technology, and a ceramic converter, it offers high light output even at high currents, uniform distribution of light, thermal stability and particularly good contrast for seeing and being seen. Light sources for frontlighting have to be multi-talented. Not only do they have to illuminate the road
ahead reliably in rain and fog and at night, they have to perform various functions as low beam, cornering lights and fog lights for example. At the same time, they have to withstand high temperatures in the headlights. For these reasons, more and more automobile manufacturers are opting for flexible, efficient and powerful LED technology. Oslon Black Flat is the latest addition by Osram Opto Semiconductors to its Oslon Black series and has been designed to
meet all these requirements. The new LED contains a UX:3 chip that delivers high light output even at high currents. With a power draw of 2.3 W and an operating current of 700 mA, the Oslon Black Flat achieves a typical luminous flux of 200 lm (at 25°C). If operated at 1.2 A it can achieve up to 270 lumen – despite an application temperature of 100°C in the chip.

when a few street lamps would do. The bridges that span some of the world’s busiest waterways are being given a facelift by lighting designers’ determined to make sure they look as good by night as they do by day. In Tampa, Florida, five landmark bridges spanning the Hillsborough River have been illuminated as part of the Lights on Tampa arts initiative. The project, entitled Agua Luces (or Water Lights) is a joint public and private partnership between the City’s Arts Division and Friends of Tampa Public Art. A number of years in the planning, Agua Luces complements The Tampa Riverwalk expansion, a paved walkway on the eastern side of the river that highlights specific vistas of the city, river and newly-lit bridges. In charge of designing the lighting aspect of Agua Luces was Tracey Dear of Chicago-based Dear Productions. Well known for illuminating Chicago’s bridges, Dear specified outdoor-rated Iluminarc fixtures fitted with LEDs in his design, in order to allow the colours to be changed throughout the hours of darkness. ‘The water plays such a large role in Tampa’s appearance,’ explained Dear. ‘My first impression was how beautiful the city looked from the water. I have never underestimated the appeal of water to the human psyche. Add the element of light and you have a powerful mix.’
Five down … The goal of the project is to light all nine city bridges by 2014. The five ticked off to date are Platt Street Bridge, Brorein Street Bridge, Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority overpass, Kennedy Boulevard Bridge, and the CSX Railroad Bridge. ‘Each bridge is unique, and I wanted to give them their own personality, while unifying them as one family of bridges surrounding downtown Tampa,’ said Dear. ‘Much like currents of water, the bridges will constantly change colour and appearance. This magic of changing light reflects in the Hillsborough River, adding to the overall view of the city.’ Four of the five bridges utilise Iluminarc Ilumipanel 40 IP exterior lighting solutions. The fifth - Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority overpass - uses Ilumipanel 90

together with six Ilumiline 36 IP linear wash lights. All five bridges have been lit to create colourful archways for the active waterway, and add dramatic flair to the city’s skyline. ‘The Ilumipanel 40 is a bright little fixture with a manageable design that’s not alien to electrical contractors,’ cited Dear. ‘It has really great output with a slim design, and blends in to the environment well. Eastern promise Arup has gained a worldwide reputation for its stunning projects, not least the Sheikh Zayed bridge in Abu Dhabi. Associate and lighting designer, Simone Collon discussed the technical challenges: ‘The main technical challenge was ensuring that the lighting fixtures, which were positioned in the water and at other positions around the bridge, remained invisible to the human eye, while illuminating the bridge continuously. ‘The incredibly hot climate (up to 40 degrees in the summer) was also a major consideration when deciding on what fixtures to use - the design team went for very resilient products from Danish lighting manufacturer, Martin which would handle this heat. ‘However, first and most importantly, Arup’s lighting designers follow a creative approach in developing a lighting concept.’ The choice of fixtures and control system was primarily driven by design and includes: 204 x Martin exterior 600; 130 x Martin exterior 200; 956 x Martin Cyclo 01 The control system utilised a Martin Maxxyz; 12 x Martin Ether2DMX; 9 x Martin RS-485 Optosplitter; and 10 x XLNT Etherswitch. For the roadway lighting on top of the bridge, Philips’ MVF607, MVP506 and Mastercolour lamps were selected. The control system was specified in order to animate the lighting. Collon explained: ‘The structural silhouette shape, the so-called spine of the bridge, is highlighted by dynamic coloured light, while the underside of the road deck features integrated monochrome dynamic cell lighting. A control system allows for animated flow movements in the spine and the cells, resulting in fluid patterns of light travelling along the bridge.
The scenarios comprise dynamic coloured light that flows across the channel, creating an embracing landscape of colors for the users of the bridge and a scenic feature for distant viewers. ‘The lighting was designed by Arup to reflect the culture of Abu Dhabi and the UAE – a specially developed language of light creates a landscape of colour to flow across the bridge as a symbol for the prosperity and ambition of Abu Dhabi, while celebrating religious traditions, festivities and public events. For example, with the new moon, the bridge lighting links with the appearance of the Grand Mosque. Once a month, both iconic pieces of architecture appear tinted in deep blue colours, creating awareness of urban connectivity. ‘The strong, simple concept of this lighting design required both feature and road lighting to be perfectly balanced, focused, shielded, and programmed. The 13-year design process began with testing lights in a physical model of the bridge, followed by a rigorous process of design verification and refinement, including colour tests, calculations via computer model with photometrical accurate files and with a full-scale mock-up comparing fixtures and bespoke lenses.’

Closer to home, the recent Olympic regeneration project for East London included installing the Stratford Link bridge, which links the station to Westfield Shopping Centre. Many thousands of visitors to the Park utilised the footbridge during the Games, and it was decided to provide a vibrant journey for those visitors with the use of light. Pinniger Lighting Consultants created a lighting design for the bridge, designed by Knight Architects and Buro Happold. The 130m bridge features a broad 12m wide deck and glazed five metre high sides, providing a secure, transparent enclosure. The bridge is gently curved in plan and the inner chord of the truss is warped so that it is inclined to 15 degrees at mid-span. This creates a dynamic sense of movement and increases the view of the sky where the truss is tallest. The lighting design objectives were to create an overall visitor experience, adding to the bridge’s sophisticated, urban appearance, while maintaining excellent levels of safety and security. Of particular importance was the need to balance a range of adjoining lighting installations, including Stratford Station and Westfield Stratford City itself. Lighting is provided from within each of the vertical mullions. The lit effect gives homogenous light on both sides of the bridge, accentuating and enhancing the architectural form, while creating an interesting and visually comfortable lit environment. Each lightbox is divided into three lit compartments. Cool white LED profiles are located in the main body of the light box, providing general ambient lighting to the footpath. This is supplemented by the bottom-lit element, which has a combination of linear LED profiles to maintain the homogenous effect, along with LED projectors, providing a localised pool of blue light to the bridge deck. The simple, rhythmic light created by the vertical white luminaires adds to the sense of movement. The top compartment contains blue LED profiles to soften the brighter white light against the night sky.
Moving lights A first for the North East, Gateshead’s Millennium tilting bridge was a world first, so when the local authority decided it was time for an upgrade to the lighting, it made sense to utilise a revolutionary development in LED technology. The bridge now features colour mixing effect LED projectors, which complement the striking, white arched structure and create vibrant illumination through both static coloured illumination and dynamic colour changing sequences. Stage Electrics worked in partnership with Architainment and Philips Lighting to bring the project to fruition. Craig Grieveson of Stage Electrics commented: ‘When Gateshead Council

decided that the time had arrived to update the existing lighting system it was an ideal opportunity to put forward Philips’ ColorReachT. It’s the first LED architectural floodlight which is powerful enough to illuminate large-scale structures, having more lumen output than any other comparable fixture for exterior illumination.’ ColorReachT offers exceptional light projection - up to 5,000 lumens over 500ft - providing colour-mixing effects through both static and dynamic colour-changing sequences. The modules also offered an energy saving opportunity, operating at 290W at full output compared to the 700W traditional floodlights they replaced.
Projecting skywards To create the stunning effects, eight RGB LED ColorReachT Powercore luminaires were installed, each incorporating a flexible selection of beam angles allowing differing combinations of dynamic displays to be produced. These were run via a DMX controller using astronomically triggered timelines. For special events, the potential exists to use one beam on the module’s lower half to bathe the vertical plane with colour at deck level, while utilising a different beam angle to project a contrasting or complementary colour hundreds of feet up at the top of the arch. In addition, two remote touch screens have been installed to allow bridge staff to take manual control of the system for last-minute special requests or specific colour requirements. It has been programmed to run without intervention, starting at sunset and running through until 1am.

P U L S A R C A S E S T U D Y: S A V A B R I D G E The bridge on Ada Island spans the River Sava in Belgrade, Serbia, crossing the tip of Ada Ciganlija and connecting the municipalities of Ukarica and Novi Beograd. Not only is it a landmark architectural structure and one of the longest single-pylon, asymmetric, cable-stayed bridges in the world, but it also provides increased network capacity for the area’s transportation infrastructure. After nearly five years of construction, the bridge officially opened on the first of the year 2012, boasting 2,256 LED fixtures, including 30 Pulsar TriColour RGB LED ChromaFlood200s for the illumination of inner pylon and tip, and 1032 Pulsar 1.8m TriColour LED ChromaStrip25s for the underside of the carriageway. Gulf Line International Trading Co., a Dubai-based full service provider of indoor, outdoor and custom-made light fittings for commercial and hospitality projects, worked together with manufacturers and sub-contractors to design, supply, supervise, and install all of the decorative lighting. Although the construction of the bridge began years ago, the installation of the lighting only began towards the end of November 2011. Gulf Line supervised all aspects of the installation of the decorative lighting and even carried out parts of the installation. Additionally, it managed teams from the different manufacturers involved: Pulsar Light (UK), Musco Lighting (US), Planet Lighting (Australia), as well as subcontractor, DC Energocoop (Serbia). ‘The client’s initial request was to illuminate the tip and faces of the 200m tall pylon (both inner and outer surfaces) along with the 80 stay cables supporting the bridge connected to the pylon, the underside of the carriageway and the bicycle/foot paths along the bridge’s sides,’ explained Gulf Line assistant project director, Igor Djordjevic. ‘The unique solution offered by Gulf Line used only LED fixtures, as requested by the client, to illuminate all parts of the bridge, and in total, more than 2,256 LED fixtures were used. Gulf Line’s proposal utilised fixtures from several manufacturers around the world, specialising in different aspects of the project. Using this knowledge, and the fact that Pulsar focuses primarily on RGB LEDs and has a reputation as being amongst the best companies for dynamic colour changing LED fixtures, Gulf Line detailed the
request of the client, and together with Pulsar, came up with the most effective solutions both price- and design-wise.’ Pulsar’s ChromaFlood200s were chosen specifically for the illumination of inner pylon and tip due to the client’s request for the inner faces of the pylon to be illuminated in a range of colors instead of just white. Additionally, the Pulsar ChromaStrip25s were spec’d for the illumination of the underside of the carriageway because the client requested a linear strip that would span the length of the bridge and be bright enough to be visible from a distance. The ChromaStrips fitted not only the brief, but also the limited installation space under the carriageway. ‘The Pulsar products detailed above met all of the requirements and the client was more than satisfied with the results,’ Djordjevic concludes. ‘Pulsar offers a high quality range of products with a very high level of service to go with them. It is focused on colour controllable LED fixtures, and offers a very up-todate set of products, which is extremely important when dealing with the ever changing LED technology.’ Because of the complexity of the project, everything was designed well in advance and so all came together without a hitch during the installation process. However, there were a few interesting after effects of the installation to note says Djordjevic: ‘The cone-shaped tip of the pylon is made of stainless steel; it is a bit of an unconventional surface to illuminate as it acts like a mirror, reflecting most of the light away. The end result was an interesting and slightly unusual reflection where a single line is seen in the middle of the tip going vertically upwards and erupting into a bouquet of light, giving an almost exploding firework effect. And while there is nothing unusual about the way the ChromaStrips were used on the underside of the carriageway, the fixtures themselves formed a magnificent reflection, which stretched across the river Sava’s surface. ‘Both Pulsar and Gulf Line believe that this might be the longest continuous LED line in the world.’

TRAVELLING LIGHT The award-winning Concord Beacon Muse from Havells-Sylvania has helped create an energy-saving, high performance lighting display at the Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow. Used to showcase various displays in the Modern Street, 82 Beacon Muse fittings were chosen for their long life, low energy and optical flexibility. The new scheme provides dynamic accent lighting and helps transport visitors back in time. Zaha Hadid’s first public building in the UK, the Glasgow museum sits proudly as a flagship of the city’s Clyde waterfront regeneration. With its unusual shape and demanding presence, it is no surprise the lighting design was not up for compromise. DHA Design was responsible for lighting the exhibits in the museum. Its brief was to design a predominantly groundmounted display system that would provide suitable highlights and contrast to the exhibits and collections. The Modern Street offers a set of closed display areas, which exhibit various transport items and model street amenities including a subway, MOT garage, cinema, toyshop and cycle shop. These areas had a track system available overhead and DHA chose the Concord Beacon Muse for its on-site flexibility; an adjustable zoom option system offers a wide flood 65˚ beam angle, which can be tightened to a 10˚ spot without the need for additional lenses or reflectors. DHA used the spotlight to selectively highlight cars, bicycles, miniature models, car parts and artworks. Conservation levels applied to all the exhibits so protecting them from light exposure damage was essential. The low UV from the LED source and an on-board dimmer potentiometer from the Beacon Muse meant it was able to comfortably handle all situations.
Shopping solution The first UK Philips lighting store has opened in London. Philips’ Westbourne Grove Light Gallery will showcase Philips’ consumer lighting solutions and exclusive lines. With a focus on energy efficient lighting, the store is designed for easy navigation allowing shoppers to browse by room. In addition, a variety of spotlights and downlights will be displayed alongside a dedicated area for the Living Colors range, designed to encourage people to use light to create and enhance the ambiance of a home. The store will also offer lighting controls and a range of energy efficient light bulbs. Lighting is undergoing a huge transformation as a result of LED and the store will showcase the design possibilities available with this new technology. The Gallery will provide expert advice on the use of light in the home and guidance on purchasing energy efficient light bulbs. All staff have undergone training to understand the benefits of LED and will be on hand to help shoppers make the appropriate purchase decisions. Roar of approval Hager has donated a circuit protection solution for Dartmoor Zoo, made famous by the movie, We Bought A Zoo, which starred Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. The zoo, formerly Dartmoor Wildlife Park, was purchased by the Mee family and following
major refurbishment work, was reopened in July 2007 as Dartmoor Zoological Park. The struggle to achieve it has been featured in a book, a BBC documentary and the film. Hager’s donation will help the organisation refurbish buildings in order to meet
the ISO 14001 standard. Tim Steward, maintenance officer for Dartmoor Zoo, explained: ‘We have been operating with second-hand products for years, and now we really want to improve on the electrical installations in our building and begin a complete

nyone who’s worked for a large company will probably have experienced lighting control systems – even if only in the form of lights that come on as the user enters the little boys’ – or girls’ - room. However, smaller companies and homeowners haven’t, until recently embraced the technology. OK, so the majority of the able-bodied population don’t strictly need control systems to switch lights on and off, open and close curtains and blinds, or control the heating and ventilation systems within their homes and they’ve not been a high priority on the average cashstrapped, time-poor SME’s ‘to do’ list either. But lack of interest - or even resistance - to their implementation soon dissolves when it’s pointed out tthat there are savings to be made by investing in even a basic system. From the largest city centre office to an independent high street store or even it seems, the average family home, lighting controls can have a part to play in keeping energy usage and costs down.

Such is the interest from these areas of late that Sylvania has introduced a lighting control systems business unit to support its burgeoning range of products for energy saving lighting schemes. ‘Companies currently have three core challenges that are answered by controls: carbon-reduction, cost-savings, and compliance with legislation,’ explained Sam Woodward, senior SBU manager, control systems at Havells-Sylvania. ‘Leaving lights burning in unoccupied spaces, or areas lit by daylight can cost companies a great deal. Installing presence and light sensors could help reduce energy costs by up to 60 per cent. Upcoming legislation specifically addresses this and, with systems paying for themselves through energy savings, now is the time to ensure sensors are included in all lighting schemes.’ The company’s Microwave or PIR sensors can operate in one of two ways: with presence-detection, the lights are turned on automatically when a person enters a room and will turn off automatically after a pre-set time delay when no movement is detected. This makes them the ideal solution for corridors, meeting rooms or storage rooms. Alternatively, with absence detection, the lights need to be manually switched on, but they will turn off automatically. But a word of warning from Woodward: ‘Correct commissioning is crucial. Ensuring that sensor switch-off or dimming timing and detection sensitivities are properly configured, such that the controls are effective, efficient

HOME MAKEOVER
In North London, a total home refurbishment gave the owners the opportunity to make the most of the latest in integration technologies. From the multiple controls for garage doors and gates and noisy blinds in the conservatory, to the manual time-clocks on external lighting, the owners knew what they didn’t like about their home, and the refurbishment gave them a chance to address these issues.

Robin Courtenay, director at total systems integrator, SMC commented: ‘Following initial conversations with the client, it was clear that they didn’t want to feel alienated by the technology, so the new system had to be easy to use, allow for future upgrades as required and offer seamless control of all the lighting, AV, and HVAC throughout the home, pool house and garden.’ Working closely with architectural practice, Stephen Wax Associates, a plan was created that combined the controls and interfaces needed to create a convenient, usable system that was discrete, yet fully integrated. With ease of use high on the client’s agenda, all of the technology used within the home needed to be user-friendly and versatile. By choosing Lutron’s flexible HomeWorks light control solution, functionality was built into the lighting scheme from day one. As the installers were involved in the project from the early stages, it was possible for the majority of the integration technology to be planned around two central equipment rooms located in the basement and on the first floor. Lutron’s light control system was located in the basement and integrated into
the HVAC, security, AV and blinds throughout the house. By integrating all of the services into HomeWorks, SMC was able to minimise operational complexity and wall clutter and enable control from Lutron’s SeeTouch keypads, which were sited throughout the building. For the ultimate in flexible control, the system was also integrated into a variety of touch panels in the living areas and the owner’s iPhones and iPads through AMX control. Thanks to the open structure of Lutron’s HomeWorks software, SMC’s engineers were able to integrate the interior, exterior and security lighting, as well as control of 83 blinds and the lighting within the separate pool house with as few interfaces as possible, ensuring ultimate control from anywhere in the home. The owners were particularly keen to replace the noisy automated blinds in the conservatory and introduce intelligent control to all of the blinds throughout the home. To ensure that natural, as well as artificial light was managed at all times, the blinds were incorporated into the pre-programmed lighting scenes for total lighting control.

BIG HOUSE, BIG SAVINGS
When David Edwards commissioned a far from average house for his family in the affluent North West, he was keen to use the most advanced technology in order to create a home that would offer exceptional comfort, convenience and energy efficiency.
The result is Bank Hall House; an extremely functional home that uses technology to complement the way in which the occupants use the space. A Wandsworth KNX system allows family members to set scenes and re-programme the controls to adapt the way the house functions for different times of the day, year or even social occasions and family activities. Built using ICF (insulated concrete formwork) technology, Bank Hall House boasts six bedrooms, five bathrooms, orangeries forming both a drawing room and dining room, a swimming pool, games room, sauna, home cinema, gym and garage space sufficient for nine cars. Specialist KNX integrator, Discovery Systems, was brought in to take a brief for the specification of the building controls and the company was able to recommend suitable solutions to answer the family’s requirements for functionality and energy efficiency. The company used the Jung Facility Pilot from Wandsworth Group to create a control system that offers centralised, real-time information and allows the family to alter settings using a touch screen panel. As a result, the family can check the status of any of the house’s 900 light fittings, adjust the heating, or select from a number of pre-
programmed settings with ease. The Facility Pilot actively helps manage the controls to optimise energy efficiency. Thanks to the integration of Bank Hall House’s lighting, heating, cooling, audio-visual and security systems, the system can trigger linked events and automatically switch controls on or off under specific, pre-programmed conditions. For example, if the lighting control sensors in the home cinema detect that there is no longer anyone in the room, the system will automatically power down the audio-visual equipment and turn down the heating. The system also provides useful security functionality by linking the lighting and audiovisual controls to the security system. This means that the KNX controls can be set so that all lights are switched on when the security alarms are triggered, making it much more difficult for an intruder to escape undetected. The monitoring feature of the Facility Pilot can also be used to record normal usage of the house’s lighting, audio-visual, heating and cooling systems over a two-week period and the system can then use this data to simulate occupancy when the family is away, replaying the previous two weeks’ activity.

and achieve the desired energy-saving end result. However, performance success depends on a proper understanding of the area’s final use, and so preparation and planning begin with a proper specification.’
Communicating change There are also some simple methods of increasing efficiency, says Woodward: ‘For example, daylight harvesting, which means switching off lights when daylight levels are high enough not to warrant their use. Task-orientated lighting is important so lighting can be ‘tuned’ for a particular task where high LUX levels might not be required.’ A consideration when using presence- or daylight-controlled lighting that can be overlooked in the drive to switch off lights, is the changing number and location of employees working in offices at any one time. These changes can give rise to ‘light islands’ – small pockets of lit space in an otherwise dark room, which employees tend to find understandably unnerving. To overcome the problem without reverting to ‘all lights on’, Waldmann has come up with a clever retrofit wireless module that allows luminaires to communicate with each other and exchange presence information. Pulse Talk allows several fittings to work together as a group to create a lighting scenario that contributes to a more pleasant working atmosphere for the staff. When one luminaire detects the presence of a person, it reports the information to the other members of the group. The transmitting luminaire activates its normal level of work light, while the other luminaires in the group switch to a defined background level. This allows the group as a whole to react to the absence or presence of people by creating a suitable lighting scenario over a broader area. The main benefit is the simplicity of installation and operation. Pulse Talk doesn’t require specific building preconditions, as is the case with wired systems. The individual luminaires have an automatic ‘teach-in’ function and can be easily assigned to a group without the help of external software. Each module can be assigned to one of 100 possible areas in a building. An area can be a whole floor or just a department within a larger open office. Within an area, each luminaire can be assigned to one or two groups of the 16 available for selection. Groups are, for example, different work areas that may overlap. One luminaire in the group can take over the function of master, also switching on/off corridor lighting equipped with a compatible actuator. Every assignment can be read or modified directly on the module. Of course, wider energy use can be controlled and often lowered using control systems, such as Crestron’s Fusion

It cleverly tracks the carbon footprint of the premises, while providing control over lighting levels and temperature, automatically turning off lights and reducing HVAC use in unoccupied spaces. ‘The software provides a fully customisable platform to monitor, adjust and troubleshoot issues from a central location,’ commented Robin van Meeuwen of Crestron International. The Fusion platform is a scalable framework which provides the basis on which to monitor and manage lighting, energy, and AV, while providing the tools for remote help desk, room scheduling and asset tracking. ‘Fusion EM controls lighting, shades, heating, and cooling for every room, and the GUI organises each room in order based on building and region,’ continued van Meeuwen. ‘The interface is extremely intuitive and allows users to customise the software to suit their particular requirements. Arranging scheduled events, such as end of day shut down, setting lighting scenes for meetings or changing temperature set points is simple, fast and effective.’ So, perhaps the only barrier to whole-hearted adoption of the technology is a fear of the unknown, but it sounds as if it’s high time we made the leap. As Woodward says: ‘lighting control is not as complicated as many think, and is surely set to become a necessity and not just a luxury.’

Race for
technology
Making space for a growing team of race cars is never easy, but when it’s time to bite the bullet, making sure the upgrade works for the team on the ground is paramount
F
ortec Motorsport currently runs teams in six championships, including Formula Renault and Formula BMW. Steve Lynch is the team manager, and he has seen accelerated growth at the company over the last few years. Due to this expansion, the workshop for his teams had become too small and Lynch decided to split the workshop into two floors by creating a mezzanine level, which meant new lighting would have to be installed.
The challenge The workshop is split into bays, each requiring suitable downlighting and spotlighting, which can be focused on key areas of the vehicles being worked on. In addition, there are several workbenches around the building - all requiring specific lighting for more delicate work - as well as the general lighting for the workshop. As the new lighting would be installed beneath the floor of the mezzanine level, the company needed to find a solution, which wouldn’t be affected by the vibration from the engineering work and foot traffic above. Due to the constant maintenance and fine-tuning which the cars require, the lights are needed for between ten and twelve hours every day, so it was also essential that it would be energy efficient and have a long lifespan, to avoid the need to constantly change lamps. Lynch also wanted to ensure a pleasant working environment for his team. He felt it important that the lighting felt natural, and that it shouldn’t produce excess heat to ensure the engineers were comfortable as they worked.
The solution Lynch briefly considered halogen before being recommended Toshiba’s LEDs. To ensure the fittings were suitable, Toshiba’s lamps were installed in a small area of the

ground floor. ‘We were worried that indoor lighting can feel unnatural,’ explained Lynch. ‘But the area we tested the LED bulbs in showed great results, giving natural-looking light in an enclosed space.’ After the successful test, two large spotlights were installed in each of the workshop bays, sited above the cars’ engine and chassis, providing ample light for key engineering work. Further smaller spotlights were installed over each of the workbenches, flooding the surfaces with light for intricate equipment maintenance.
The results The lighting was installed and operational in six weeks, minimising disruption to the day-to-day running of the workshop. ‘It was great to have the lighting up and running as quickly as possible, as this meant the team could get on with preparing our cars for races,’ commented Lynch. The results already show improved energy efficiency. As well as installing LEDs on the mezzanine, the workshop’s halogen lamps were replaced with Toshiba’s E-CORE GU10 6.5W lamps and
E-CORE 3000 downlights, cutting energy consumption by 67 per cent. As they should last up to 20 times longer than their halogen counterparts, it will still outperform halogen solutions.
The future Having created the mezzanine level to make the most of the available space in the main workshop, Fortec is now considering the possibility of doing something similar in another of its buildings. LED light fittings would definitely be included in the new renovation project. ‘LED lighting is a perfect solution for us. We can save on our energy costs, and we’re happy knowing that we’re reducing our impact on the environment,’ explained Lynch. ‘Having vibration-proof, long-life lighting is perfect as we know it can take the heavy, constant use that’s required in a working racing workshop’.

A peppering of Focus SB plates throughout cottage
More than 300 lighting plates from the Focus SB range have been specified throughout Peppering House near Chichester Built in 1824, the owners felt a complete refurbishment was long overdue and in particular the electrics and lighting plates. Martin Ellwood, Managing Director of Bognor Regis-based installer Homepower, was familiar with Focus SB products from a previous renovation at one of the other properties on the estate: “I was very satisfied with the quality of the inserts used throughout the range. “Due to the nature of the property and the variation of the interior design themes in each room, the owner was looking for an array of lighting plate finishes to complement the paint and wallpaper. SUCCESS ON TOUR Lighting designer, Theo Cox’s visual scheme for the current Seal world tour brings a fresh innovative approach, mixing the mediums of lighting, video and automation into a stunning asymmetric swirl of drama, suggestion and energy. The design has proved extremely popular, and won much industry acclaim as the tour completed its Australian and US legs, and is ready to hit Europe later in the autumn. UK-based Cox first worked with the multi-award winning singer/ songwriter in summer 2011, and was approached to create a design concept for the Soul 2 tour. Given a largely open brief for the design, it had to be adaptable to a variety of different venue sizes, ultimately tourable and use lighting that could be sourced worldwide as well as fitting into an expedient truck pack. Evoking a clean, elegant and dynamically different look onstage was at the very core of the design. The only set onstage is a pair of risers, so the stage architecture is defined by seven movable pods; a single Clay Paky Sharpy is rigged to the bottom of each pod, with two Martin Atomic strobes and colour scrollers on the rear of the frame assembly, and a 4-lite Mole at the top. Cox’s lighting ‘base concepts’ included having individual moving back and key lights for each of the eight band members, and plenty of scope for ‘flash & bang’ interest. For maximum flexibility and time efficiency, the rig was also designed so no manual focusing was necessary. Powerful spot and wash moving lights were required as the primary moving sources, with minimal floor based ‘clutter’. Having a handful of movers, strobes and generics at his disposal on automated pods was also one of the original intentions, allowing ‘moving moving lights’ and serious asymmetry. Cox summed up: ‘This was a great opportunity to design a beautiful, vibrant show for an artist I respect a lot, and I am extremely pleased with the result’.
NAT goes wild for Wildsun French entertainment lighting provider, New Advanced Technology has invested in 375 Ayrton WILDSUN 500 K7 moving-heads, following several tests and comparisons with other manufacturers’ models. WILDSUN 500 K7 is equipped with thirty-one 6700K multi-chip LEDs and, with 75 per cent optical efficiency, the company believes is the most efficient model on the market. The fitting delivers 20,000 lumens output from a power consumption of only 380W. This
power and low consumption, in combination with the full motorisation of the luminaire, make it particularly suitable for exhibitions and car shows. The K series is composed of three movingheads: 3000K white; 6700K white; and a variable white from 3000K to 6700K. New Advanced Technology also invested in 200 Ayrton Arcaline 2 fixtures. The Arcaline 2 is a powerful 16 x 10W RGBW LED batten. Its IP65 ingress protection level makes it is perfectly suitable for both outdoor and indoor use.
When visitors arrived at the world’s biggest fair, attention centred not only on good cheer, but also on the environment. The Hippodrom is not the largest of the Oktoberfest beer tents, but its commitment to the environment is: by replacing 550 incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient Osram LED lamps, the venue reduced its CO2 emissions by 1.2 tons during the event. A total of 550 warm-white LED lamps from Munich-based Osram were installed. Instead of 25 watts like the incandescent bulbs used before, the new lamps needed only 5 watts of power to achieve the same brightness, meaning they saved 2,500 kWh of electricity during the 16-day Oktoberfest, equivalent to 600,000 litres of CO2. ‘Together with Osram, we are making the Oktoberfest a little bit greener. We would like to show that even when you’re celebrating, you shouldn’t forget the environment. At the same time, we want to demonstrate our support of efforts to achieve a more sustainable Oktoberfest,’ explained Sepp Krätz, operator and host of the Hippodrom.
The challenge of lighting the fast-paced 2012 Teen Choice Awards was taken on by Tom Kenny, and included Robe’s latest moving lights. The pace and complexity was a serious challenge to the production crew and creative teams. The start point for the lighting scheme was Steve Bass’s set, featuring several large LED screen surfaces. Graphic and video content was at the core of the performances, filling the stage with light and informing Kenny’s choice of luminaires. He evolved basic looks for each live act – colours, texturing and general ambience - from this, producing a different look and feel for each performance. ‘It’s all about keeping the energy pumping for the show,’ he explained.

the end of an era For PLASA. From 2013, the successful, vibrant, action-packed show will take up residence at London’s ExCeL. So how did 2012 stack up? Overall – and unsurprisingly given the current economic climate – visitor numbers were down, although overseas visitor figures (25 per cent of the overall footfall) only fell by one per cent on 2011. However, registrations for the range of seminars, debates and presentations on offer in the purpose-built theatres was up by more than 100 per cent. And importantly, the range of information on offer appeared to include something for everyone. Initial figures suggest that a third of attendees took in at least one of the sessions. James Simpson, a lighting visualiser from the Royal Opera House and a presenter himself commented: ‘The range of seminars was relevant and interesting. I managed to get along to four or five and felt I learnt something from all of them - the term “professional development” was very appropriate, in that I felt I learnt a lot from each one.’

This is the first time MediaMaster 3.0 has appeared in the UK following its successful previews at Frankfurt and Las Vegas earlier this year. MediaMaster is a software solution for professional control of real-time video and effects that has been specifically developed for desk operators and lighting designers, and is capable of turning any powerful computer into a fully-fledged professional media server. MediaMaster 3.0 retains the iconic user-friendliness and feature-rich status that has become the trademark of the ArKaos product range. The integration with the LED Mapper and Kling-Net Mapper is now made much more straightforward by threading each layer separately before sending it to the desired output. DTS’ Nick 1201 NRG, an LED moving head wash fixture, which is extremely bright and eco-friendly, is equipped with 30 high-powered RGBW LEDs. It has an 8°- 50° motorised zoom, and high-efficiency optical system that enables it to be used as a PC Beam or a very wide Wash, with ultra-fast, near-silent Pan/Tilt. The DTS Jack Spot lightweight moving head with a dynamic motorised zoom offers tight beam projection to wide washing up to 46 degrees. Tree of light Uniting architectural and entertainment lighting was a pre-requisite for the recent London 2012 Festival Tree of Light performances
N
ick Gray of creative lighting and design practice, Renegade combined his skill and experience in the disciplines of entertainment and architectural lighting to produce a stunning, dramatic light show for the recent Tree of Light performances, which were part of the London 2012 Festival. Gray was asked to light a spectacular structure created by Gideon Berger and Steve Gallagher of Block 9 for the event, which toured three outdoor venues in Reading, Oxford (as part of the Olympic Torch relay) and Henley. Block9 and Renegade have collaborated on a number of previous festivals and events. Gray was very excited to take up the challenge. ‘The tree structure was truly impressive,’ he explained. ‘Big, bold and making a real statement on one hand, whilst also involving many intricacies and details, all of which needed highlighting diligently and carefully.’
The brief Central to his brief for lighting the tree was that Berger and Gallagher wanted it to appear as if ‘50 tonnes of concrete were floating in the air’. Quite a challenge then. The tree formed the backdrop to the performance, which was played out on the area in front of it by a cast of 1,200, sourced from several communities. The tree also housed the band, which played a special soundtrack composed by Orlando Gough for the 45-minute work. Gray incorporated as many LED and low energy light sources as possible in the design, in keeping with the ethos of the project, with some of the lighting actually run via bicycle power. A specific and physical challenge he faced was lighting the large cast across the wide area in front of the tree and extending outwards on both sides.
The challenges The schedule meant that there was no rehearsal or run-through time, so the show was visualised extensively and pre-programmed in Renegade’s WYSIWYG suite, enabling Gray and operator, Paulus van Heijkant to go into the first show fully prepared using a Chamsys MagicQ console.

Lower down, windowed bike pods lit with 15W clear golf-ball lamp festoon lighting were self-powered by the cyclists inside A diverse selection of lighting fixtures was utilised, as Gray felt he needed to light different areas in very specific ways. The lighting equipment was supplied by Colour Sound Experiment, which has been involved in a number of Block9â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s events. To light the front-of-tree main performance space, two scaffolding towers were erected on either side and rigged with powerful Robe ROBIN 1200 LEDWashes, bars of 6 PARs and Martin Professional MAC 301 LED lights. These were all chosen to provide the best wash coverage of the outfield area. At the back of the on-stage performance areas, Gray used black trussing on its side to provide side and rear lighting positions for the band and stage, onto which were rigged four CP Alpha Beam 1500 moving lights, another eight MAC 301s, six Clay Paky Sharpies, 4-lite Moles and Atomic Strobes. The 9-metre high tree was up-lit with a collection of strategically placed CP61 single PARs, with a space flower effect blasting through from the back as the show reached its conclusion. Around the top of the structure, a series of Perspex windowed chambers housing live plants were illuminated with a mix of Alupar 36 Compacts, 3-metre Pulsar ChromaStrips, ChromaZones and Atomic strobes.
Lower down, windowed bike pods lit with 15W clear golf-ball lamp festoon lighting were selfpowered by the cyclists inside. The pods were additionally lit with MAC 250 Entour moving lights, fitted with ACL snouts, chosen for their compact size, together with Atomic strobes and PAR cans. Under the pods, and behind scenic grills on the front of the structure were more Mac Entours, GLP Impression LED wash lights and more Atomic strobes. Tree of Light was artistically directed by Charlie Morrissey and creatively produced by Stuart Collins, with the job of looking after all the lighting equipment on the road falling to lighting crew chief, Matt Rimmer. The shows were extremely well received despite the erratic weather, and provided a great prelude in the run up to the Olympic Games.
