History of Vallejo The City of Vallejo was founded as California’s first state capitol in 1850 and named for one of the state’s preeminent native sons, a Mexican military officer, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, whose land much of the original city was built upon. The man mostly responsible for the founding of the city is John B. Frisbie who married Vallejo’s daughter. He was responsible for helping to establish the city’s government, supported the thriving wheat-shipping business, and founded the White Sulphur (Blue Rock) Springs Resort.
Vallejo’s multicultural diversity began earlier in Vallejo than in other California cities. Many Filipinos settled in the area in the 1920s after the Spanish-American War and the Filipino Insurrection. The Navy’s presence at Mare Island attracted military and civilian personnel from all over who eventually settled in Vallejo. Their families and descendants remain a rich and vibrant part of the fabric of Vallejo, making the city one of the most culturally diverse in all of Northern California.
For one week in 1852, Vallejo was the capitol of California, the first permanent home of California’s state government. One year later, it was again the capitol. This time, it lasted for one month. The legislature left for good in 1853, but the government established a naval shipyard in Vallejo, helping the town overcome the loss of the state government center. The Mare Island Naval Shipyard was established in 1854 as the first United States Navy installation on the Pacific Coast. The yard functioned for almost one hundred and fifty years, finally closing in 1996. Mare Island underwent vast transformations during its years of operation. In the 1920s, the Navy initiated construction of submarines at Mare Island. During World War II, Mare Island reached peak capacity for shipbuilding, repair and maintenance. Following the War, Mare Island was considered to be the primary station for construction and maintenance of the Navy’s Pacific fleet of submarines. During this time, the base covered 5,200 acres and was responsible for the construction of over 500 naval vessels and overhauling thousands more. As Mare Island grew into the largest ship construction facility in the world, Vallejo flourished as well. In the five war years, Vallejo’s population grew from 26,000 to nearly 100,000. Today, Vallejo is home to more than 120,000 residents.

Heritage & Architecture Vallejo’s history dates back over 150 years. More than 20 sites with landmark status exist in Vallejo, including the site of the original State Capitol building (1852), the Empress Theatre (1911), the Masonic Temple (1917), and the Naval & Historical Museum (1927).
The St. Vincent’s Hill Historic District is also part of the National Register District. This district is a 33-square block area surrounding St. Vincent’s Catholic Church located on Florida Street overlooking the waterfront. Mare Island is a National Historic Landmark that was home to the West Coast’s first and largest U.S. Navy Shipyard for almost 150 years. The architectural and cultural highlight of the island is St. Peter’s Chapel, the U.S. Navy’s first interdenominational chapel built in 1901, and whose unique design includes 29 stained glass windows, sixteen of which were produced and signed by Tiffany. Additional Vallejo neighborhoods of architectural interest include Vista de Vallejo, an eclectic mix of romantic styles dating from the 1930s; Bay Terrace and Vallejo Heights, a circa-1900 subdivision featuring Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival homes; and Washington Park, an intricate sampler of vintage architecture of the early 1900s.

Vallejo is a Bay Area city that combines a beautiful waterfront with an historic downtown core. Vallejo is strategically located midway between San Francisco and Sacramento, and the city’s proximity to the University of California-Berkeley and the University of California-Davis is a major plus to locating in Vallejo. Vallejo is host to three of its own colleges – Touro University, the California Maritime Academy and Solano Community College – that provide great opportunities for higher education for our students. Vallejo is home to an abundance of recreational opportunities. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, one of the world’s only combination wildlife, oceanarium and theme parks, continues to add new attractions and shows. The Greater Vallejo Recreation District operates 38 parks and facilities open to the public. The city’s golfing is second to none, with Hiddenbrooke Golf Club, Mare Island Golf Course and Blue Rock Springs providing three challenging and scenic courses anyone can play. And located at the scenic Vallejo Waterfront, the Vallejo Yacht Club has been a landmark in Vallejo and for the yachtsmen of San Francisco Bay since the turn of the century. For commuters and travelers, Vallejo is also home to the Vallejo Baylink Ferry, a high-speed catamaran service that is the best way to avoid gridlock and enjoy fast, comfortable and reliable service to and from San Francisco. Commercial Development Mare Island Mare Island is one of the largest commercial campuses in Solano County. Today, the Mare Island business community occupies approximately 2.5 million square feet of space on the Island and employs more than 2,000 workers. Future plans call for approximately 7 million square feet of commercial, office and industrial space. With an inventory of more than 100 buildings, Lennar Mare Island has office and industrial spaces to meet almost any commercial need. Targeted industries for this commercial district include high-tech and biotech, as well as industrial, manufacturing, medical, professional and administrative companies. Additionally, with ample berth and dry dock areas, Mare Island is equipped to accommodate a wide variety of maritime uses.

Downtown Vallejo With the restoration work complete on the historic Empress Theatre, Triad Communities’ planned development for the heart of downtown Vallejo is taking shape. Triad’s mixed-use plan calls for a 12-square block area incorporating three distinct districts: Arts & Entertainment; Residential, Specialty Service & Retail; and Civic & Transit. The Arts & Entertainment District will be anchored by the renovated Empress, an outstanding locale for live performances and film screenings that will foster a wealth of restaurants and other entertainment. The Residential & Retail District will feature new buildings that combine sidewalk-level retail and services with upstairs residences, designed to offer a live-work environment unlike anything in Vallejo today. The Civic & Transit District will add new elements (to improved existing elements) designed to enhance downtown amenities and provide benefits to the entire city.

GVRD operates 5 community parks and 24 neighborhood parks located throughout Vallejo. Children’s Wonderland Park Children’s Wonderland is open to the public 6 days a week (closed on Tuesdays and Easter Sunday) for all generations. Enter through the castle guarded by crocodiles to this whimsical park with a restored tea-pot, fire truck and Cinderella’s carriage along with new playgrounds, a sand-surrounded dinosaur and much more. The park is open October through the end of March, 11:00 am to 4:30 p.m., and April 1 through September 30, 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 pm.

Arts Vallejo Community Arts Foundation The Vallejo Community Arts Foundation (VCAF) is the umbrella organization for the City of Vallejo arts programs. For over 15 years VCAF has been promoting and sponsoring arts organizations, artists and special community events, presenting award-winning art exhibitions, hosting public forums, providing grants to arts groups, and offering arts education programs such as our highly praised Summer Arts Camp for children 7-14 years of age. Vallejo Symphony Orchestra The Vallejo Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is California’s second oldest symphony, performing continuously for more than 75 years. The Vallejo Symphony is also dedicated to helping the youth of Solano County through its educational programs.

Mare Island Golf Club Mare Island Golf Club, often referred to as the “Best Kept Secret in the Bay Area”, was established in 1892, making it the oldest golf course in the United States west of the Mississippi. Recently expanded and re-designed, the course is now a full 18-hole facility featuring unparalleled views of the San Francisco Bay. Half of the course winds through tree-lined fairways and the other half of the course lends itself to a more links-style journey. Every hole gives a magnificent view of San Pablo Bay, the Napa River, Mt. Tamalpais and even the Golden Gate Bridge on a clear day. Blue Rock Springs Golf Course Blue Rock Springs Golf Course offers two challenging 18-hole golf courses to the general public. The 18-hole Bent grass course (East Course) was designed by famed golf architect Robert Muir Graves and built in 1994; the West Course, built in the 1950s, was completely renovated in 2005-2006. The East Course was carved out of the side of a large hill and offers the golfer fantastic views on a course with many bunkers and large greens. The West course has many tree-lined fairways and the majority of the course lies in a valley with a few holes venturing up the side hills and back down.

Annual Events The Great Vallejo Ducky Derby July 4th – Vallejo Waterfront The Great Vallejo Ducky Derby is a rubber duck race on the 4th of July at Vallejo’s Waterfront. 10,000+ rubber ducks are released in the Mare Island Strait in a frantic race to the finish line. The individually numbered ducks are carried towards victory by the current for approximately 50 yards. The swiftest ducks are whisked to the winner’s circle, where the winning numbers are verified, and the corresponding names of the ticket-holders matching the winning ducks are confirmed. The prizes for winning include a Team Chevrolet Car, a Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Adventure, and a $2500 US Bank savings account. The annual Ducky Derby is a cooperative fund-raiser organized by the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce and the Vallejo Rotary Club. Numbered tickets corresponding to the ducks in the race are sold throughout the community with the net proceeds used to provide third-grade students at all Vallejo elementary schools with hardbound, children’s dictionaries. www. vallejoduckyderby.com
Solano County Fair Mid-June – Solano County Fairgrounds The Solano County Fair is a 5-day event held at the Solano County Fairgrounds located at the intersection of Highway 37 and Interstate 80 in Vallejo. The Fair is a County tradition that honors the past, present and future of agriculture, family fun and our community. The event celebrates the heritage of our region’s rural beginnings combined with an exciting mix of modern exhibits, stage performances, and musical entertainment. The Solano County Fair also features ten days of live horseracing beginning on the first day of the Fair and continuing through the week after the Fair. The carnival midway, with its flashing neon lights, games of chance and seemingly endless assortment of food and snacks, is an integral part of the Solano County Fair with
its thrilling rides and somewhat tamer “kiddy carnival”. The Fair also boasts an active livestock barn, shopping Expo, arts and craft exhibits, high-energy Sports Arena, nightly fireworks and a stellar line-up of headline concerts. The Vallejo All-American Soap Box Derby Mid-June Downtown Vallejo The Vallejo All-American Soap Box Derby Race is the crown jewel of derby racing in the West. Racers compete in three divisions (Stock, Superstock, and Masters) with the first place winners going to Akron, Ohio for the National Championships. The Vallejo Championships are run entirely by the Northern California Soap Box Derby (NCSBD) Club, a non-profit organization that organizes Soap Box Derby races and rallies for youngsters ages 8-17. The goals of the Soap Box Derby program have not changed since it began in Ohio in 1934. They are to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition, and the perseverance to continue a project once it has begun. These goals play an important role in every race sponsored by NCSBD.
Wednesday Night Celebrations Vallejo Main Street hosts its annual Wednesday Night Celebrations from mid-June through the end of August in Downtown Vallejo.
