The Town of Superior's Group Swim Lesson program, in partnership with Elevation Athletics, has been designed using established teaching models and proven methods of progression. These lessons will teach your child all of the skills that they need to be safe, confident and capable swimmers. Each level in our program will focus on teaching a variety of new swimming skills while also emphasizing and building upon the skills that were learned in previous levels. A description of each level in our program can be found below.

Parent/Child

AGES/ABILITY: 6 months–3 years

LEVEL GOAL: Acclimate children to the water and teach them basic safety of being in and around the pool. This level requires a parent to enter the water with the child and assist the child in performing the level skills.

Level I

Submersion & Bubbles

AGES/ABILITY: Beginner students, 2.5 years old and up

LEVEL GOAL: Swimmers will become comfortable getting their faces wet and submerging their bodies and heads underwater while blowing bubbles from their mouth and nose. Swimmers will learn to be comfortable performing these skills with and without goggles. They will also be introduced to the front and back float.

Level 2

Floats & Glides

AGES/ABILITY: 3 years and up, previously passed Level 1 or are capable of Level 1 requirements

LEVEL GOAL: Students will learn to float, glide and enter the water independently. Students will learn proper body position, which will serve as the foundation for the future development of each stroke. Swimmers will also be introduced to the flutter kick and learn to practice controlled and relaxed breathing.

LEVEL SKILLS: » Feet-first sliding entry to coach

3 

Kicking & Streamlines

AGES/ABILITY: 3 years and up, previously passed Level 2 or are capable of Level 2 requirements

LEVEL GOAL: Swimmers will learn to kick on their front and back, both with their arms at their sides and with their arms raised overhead/in front of them (Position 11). Swimmers will be taught to roll over from their

August Clinics & Private Swim Lessons

Based on feedback provided by lesson participants/parents during the June/July group lessons sessions, Elevation Athletics will offer clinics specific to your needs in August. Clinics will be one-day events focused on specific skills. A form to gather information on what skills you would like to cover will be emailed out to all participants by July 10.

In addition to Private swim lessons being offered in June & July, Private Lessons will also be offered for as much of August as possible with available instructors.

Level 4  Crawling

AGES/ABILITY: 4 years and up, previously passed Level 3 or are capable of Level 3 requirements

LEVEL GOAL: Swimmers will learn how to move through the water using both their arms and legs. Swimmers will be introduced to the basics of front crawl and back crawl as well as various breathing techniques.

Youth/Adult Private and Semiprivate Swim Lessons

These 30-minute sessions are taught by experienced coaches and instructors. These lessons are available to all ages and ability levels and are great for those who want to continue improving in between sessions of group lessons. These lessons are one on one with an instructor who will work with the swimmer and parent to determine the ability level of the swimmer and what skills the swimmer wants to improve on. Participant Age Range(s): 3 years and older Register for private and semiprivate swim lessons at superiorrec.com. Youth ages 3–17 and adults ages 18+.

LEVEL ADVANCEMENT REQUIREMENTS: » 5-second streamline push off & glide/float on front » 5-second streamline push off & glide/float on back » 10-yard swim with breathing, roll over and kick on back for 10 yards

Level 5  Freestyle & Introduction to Backstroke

AGES/ABILITY: Previously passed Level 4 or are capable of Level 4 requirements

LEVEL GOAL: Swimmers will continue to work on their freestyle stroke and will begin to develop and refine the out of water recovery portion of the stroke as well as side breathing. They will also be taught the proper backstroke arm movement. Swimmers will also learn to tread water.

Level 6  Backstroke & Introduction to Breaststroke

AGES/ABILITY: Previously passed Level 5 or are capable of Level 5 requirements

LEVEL GOAL: Swimmers will continue to develop their backstroke through a variety of drills focused on body position, kicking, pulling and balance. The breaststroke kick and pull will be introduced, and freestyle technique will be regularly worked on and refined.

Breaststroke & Butterfly

AGES/ABILITY: Previously passed Level 6 or are capable of Level 6 requirements

LEVEL GOAL: Swimmers will work on the breaststroke kick and pull, and will learn to put the two movements together into the full stroke. They will also learn the fourth and final stroke, butterfly, by practicing kicking and pulling drills focused on body position and stroke timing.

LEVEL GOAL: Swimmers will continue to develop their feel for the water and improve their endurance and technique in all four strokes, as well as being introduced

LEVEL ADVANCEMENT REQUIREMENTS: » 200-yard freestyle

» 50-yard side stroke » 50-yard elementary backstroke

» Tread water for 3 minutes

Pre-Team

Starts & Turns

AGES/ABILITY: Previously passed Level 8 or are capable of Level 8 requirements

LEVEL GOAL: Swimmers will learn how to do racing starts, flip turns and open turns using proven systems of progression. Swimmers will also continue to refine each of the four strokes and improve their endurance.

Individual Medley

AGES/ABILITY: Previously passed Level 9 or are capable of Level 9 requirements

LEVEL GOAL: Swimmers will refine and improve all aspects of swimming that they have worked on up to this point, including technique, endurance, starts and turns for all four strokes. Swimmers will learn how to perform a competition legal breaststroke pullout and will also be introduced to the individual medley, an event in which all four strokes are swum.
