The BMW SuperFest 2025 - Sponsored by Parramatta BMW & Castle Hill is almost here.
Come along to Sydney Motorsport Park on Sunday 26 October 2025 and be part of the largest BMW event in Australia. It is going to be an absolute feast for the eyes and ears with something for every one to enjoy and be part of.
The event major sponsors have some great plans in the works that should absolutely not be missed. They have some wonderful surprises coming that no BMW aficionado would want to miss. There are going to be some very rare and beautiful BMWs on site for everyone to drool over as well as a number of vehicles taking part in the SUPERSPRINTsponsored by EuroWerke, on what is known as the Gardner Circuit (otherwise known as the main circuit as used by Supercars etc.). It is a chance for our supersprint drivers to test their times against the times achieved by David Towe (in my old Group A M3) and Simon Hodges in the M3 production car – if you don’t have a go then you will never know.
There will also be over 300 BMWs in an epic Show N Shine display - Sponsored by Sydney Premium Detailing, which will include many trade vendor displays to let you spend a little on things that will make life with your BMW that little bit better. For those who want to enjoy a casual drive around one of Australia’s most iconic race tracks, there will also be parade laps in the middle of the day which will be at no more than 80 kilometres per hour behind a lead car, so that participants can see what the track is all about and wave to friends and family (and have photos taken by them of you

Having put this issue together to give Andrew Green a well earned break, I can only marvel at the effort Andrew puts in to publishing the magazine and all the content within. (He also shoots many events, by the way)
The biggest challenge is collating all the stories and events put on by the social and motorsport teams. And this gives me pause to think of the role of the magazine in these digital times. I enjoy Facebook and Instagram for immediate gratification, as these platfroms were created expressly to share stories and images instantly. Yet one frustrating thing I find about digital platforms is that they are endless. How often do you just browse back to fond memories without distraction? Sometimes the time it takes to curate your own social platforms defeats the purpose.
So just think how handy it is to have a resource in one place delivered to you every quarter that is a nice record of the previous events, inspiration for future adventures, some
on track) whilst travelling at a speed at which a moments distraction is not likely to see you having an issue.
We are proud to announce that Collecting Cars have joined SuperFest as our exclusive auction partner and will be running a special SuperFest auction collection during the week of the event. There will be a display including all BMW special auction vehicles, and club members are invited to take them up on their amazing offer. Find more details on the SuperFest event page on our Club’s website.
One very important part of the whole event is that the Club will be raising money on the day to support some very worthwhile charities so the more members and guests can dig into some small (or even big) change on the day will be a great help for charities that don’t always get the support that they deserve. There will be more details about those charities announced closer to the event.
An event such as this takes many people to make it run smoothly and efficiently so I would encourage members to sign on as a volunteer to help make SuperFest the huge success that we all hope for. Members will be able to sign on as volunteers on the Club’s website.
Thank you to our SuperFest sub-committee who are hard at work in the background to ensure SuperFest 2025 is bigger and better! They will organising everything including the weather (maybe not the weather but we live in hope of a lovely sunny day for SuperFest 2025).
See you there and get polishing those lovely BMWs.
technical info, members stories and a handy directory for services and discounts from our sponsors. And it’s a lot easier to show people your car in the magazine than fumbling about with your phone in the glare at cars and coffee...
I’d encourage any one with a story to share it here, for the record. It could be about your time at an event, a review of your car, or adventurous road trip. Or simply just share the joy of owning your BMW.
BMW and motoring enthusiasts in general are an inquisitive bunch. You can nerd out or show off in a space that people will share in your excitement. And if you’ve never had a story in the mag, you’re exactly who we’re after. Commit some words to print, pull some great shots off your phone and send them in to andrew.green@bmwclubnsw.asn.au
Trust me, you’re more interesting than you think.

By the time everyone is reading this our AGM will have been run and done and either I will still be the Membership Secretary or the Club will be welcoming a new Membership Secretary to the role.
As I reflect back on the last 12 months, I see that the Club has come a fair way in the Membership field – we have got Name Tags for members now (available to purchase in the Merchandise Shop for all), new smaller loyalty badges are being manufactured as I write to replace the large grill badges that were obsolete (you will be able to pin these to your jacket/shirt hat etc) and we are digitizing the magazine for those who no longer want the printed edition.
There is still more to do – I have started on a Wall of Fame to honour all of our Life Members and Friend of the Marque recipients and I continue to try and build Regional Chapters
outside the Sydney area with localised monthly runs and lunches for those who don’t have the opportunity to get to Sydney for the plethora of events there.
I still am looking for members from these Regional areas to step up. It’s not onerous I can assure you, so please give me a call if you are contemplating it and we can have a talk – no obligations. In this magazine you will also see our second “Meet the Members” column, a chance for you to introduce yourself to your fellow BMW enthusiasts and to find out why others join.
Again – would love to hear from everyday members to feature in the magazine. Just send an email to memembership@bmwclubnsw.asn.au responding to the generic questions you see in the column.
Merch update for the next edition is that the new hoodies and jackets have hit the shop and selling fast. We have some limited edition red hoodies that are selling quite well and there are limited numbers. There are also navy and black coloured hoodies. The hoodies are the AS Colour brand and they wear and wash very well. They don’t change shape in the wash. The new soft shell jackets are black with aqua fleece inside. Very warm and fit very well

At Carnarvon Golf Club on 20 May 2025, 21 of us enjoyed lunch, well most of us, the food was terrific but there were a couple of lunches a bit late in delivery.
I enjoyed the beef ribs. Our two tables were in the best position for us looking out through the giant windows over the beautiful golf course with those battery powered golf buggies following their golfers.
Attending were Stephen, Michelle, John, Alison, Henrik, Steven, John, Trish, Allan Renate, William, Helen, Tony, Michael, Kay, Trevor, Barbara, Neville, Heather, Carolyn and me and almost everyone registered on the website. There was at least some intelligent conversation and a few of the country’s problems discussed. It turned into a reasonably long lunch, and you can enjoy being with us next time.

NORTH STARS A thriving Central Coast/Newcastle Chapter
Written by: Ian Ashton
The BMW Drivers Club NSW Central Coast/Newcastle Chapter has enjoyed impressive growth over the past three months, with Ian Ashton organising regular monthly meets. This vibrant community of BMW aficionados continues to foster camaraderie through engaging events that celebrate their shared passion for these iconic vehicles.
In May, members embarked on a scenic cruise to the Tea Gardens Hotel. The day began at Hexham McDonald’s, where members gathered before setting off along the picturesque coastal roads. The drive concluded with a relaxing lunch, giving everyone a chance to connect over their love of BMWs and the open road.
June saw the chapter join forces with the wider club for the 2025 Euro Motorfest at Newcastle Foreshore Park. This grand event drew car enthusiasts from far and wide to admire a stunning display of European automobiles. You can read more about the Euro Motorfest in this issue of Torque of the Town.
In July, members met at the popular Paul’s Corner, a wellknown gathering spot for car clubs, before cruising to The Poyers Restaurant for lunch. To call the food amazing would be an understatement – everyone raved about the award-winning French cuisine. The day offered another chance for members to share stories, strengthen friendships, and enjoy the thrill of driving their BMWs.
The BMW Drivers Club Newcastle Members Chapter continues to thrive, offering members countless opportunities to celebrate their passion for BMWs through memorable experiences and engaging events. Each meet strengthens the community, creating lasting friendships and unforgettable moments on the road.

PLEASURE?
Written by: Bob Williams
I joined the Club back in 29 years ago to enjoy driving my BMW in Club Supersprints. Over the years I drove 2002s, 2000 Touring, E30 325e, E30 325i, E36/5, E82 330d and collected a few club trophies along the way.
The Sedona, that is red metallic, E82 was the only diesel engine car running in the clubs Superspint. It died, engine exploded, at turn 1 Druitt Circuit, driven by my granddaughter Zara on 1 Feb. The engine death wasn’t Zara’s fault and she did a great job completing turn 1 with smoke pouring out and the steering almost impossible. I had been warned multiple times that the timing chain was rattling, better have it fixed. I didn’t accept that advice in time and pistons running into valves and the engine demise was the resulted.
Over the years I had implemented all sorts of modifications to my cars with the aim of going faster. With the E82 I found that it was fun to drive just as BMW made it and the only thing that I did to the car was better brake pads and Nankang AR1 R spec tyres.
My advice for all BMW drivers is to have a go driving your daily driver BMW on a car race circuit, just as BMW made it. Even the inexpensive models are surprising, good.
As you find that you are enjoying the track driving experience, consider having the tyres at the correct pressure and next time you need brake pads, select better ones. Maybe better tyres, just look at the terrific range of road tyres that work well on the track. When you believe that you are at the point where you can’t go any faster without engine mods, suspension tweaking, hot exhaust, just give your car to one of the club’s gun drivers and if he or she is 3 seconds a lap faster than you then you need driving lessons and more practice. Don’t need to firstly modify the car.
On 18 May Matthias offered me a drive at the Supersprint in his 325i E46 Coupe. Take a look at the times. Matthias 1:56.8 and my best 2:04.4. I know I maybe need driving lessons if I want to go anywhere near Matt or maybe I have slowed down and am massively enjoying driving at my pace.

BREAKFAST Autumn
There’s nothing more fun than setting out early in the morning to enjoy the company of fellow BMW enthusiasts in some of the prettiest parts of Sydney.
My first experience of a BMW Brekkie run was when I turned up at the Benzin Cafe in Dural at 8:15am on Sunday morning, ready to enjoy a beautiful drive and meet some great new people. I was warmly welcomed by two members and duly got myself a cup of coffee. They told me that Ash was the person to chat to, so off went to say hello to her. She was warm and welcoming, and she had done a great job preparing the route. She kept in contact on walkie talkie with helpful

tips to avoid the potholes and hazards that have developed in the rainy weather.
Our convoy of 19 beautiful BMWs ventured out from Benzin Cafe onto New Line Road, and we made our way onto Old Northern Road and then Kent Road through Maraylya, Cattai, and South Maroota. Paddocks near the Hawkesbury were flooded and it felt like at one point we were travelling across a lake rather than a paddock. It’s extraordinary how much water we’ve had fall in Sydney recently.
Despite the slight damage to the road, the drive is a great deal of fun with some twists and turns and a few stretches where you could enjoy the growl of the engine.
Mine is a very gorgeous 2024 118 Hatch in Metallic Portimao Blue. It has the M enhancement package. 19” Alloy wheels. It has 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. I turned 60 this year and I am a single professional woman and so I gave myself a present!! I adore driving it.
It is the best gift I’ve ever had. I have enormous fun driving around in it and enjoying the blast of the Harman/Kardon speakers and listening to the roar of the engine.
We gathered at the Wiseman’s Ferry Park Reserve, parked in a neat row and all enjoyed having a look at each other’s cars and reconnecting and hearing the stories of people’s driving experiences. Some of us were in very new cars and others in some older models which were still in very fine condition. After a short stop and a chat, we were off again, destination, The Glenorie Bakery. Queues were long giving us time to chat and finally be rewarded with some delicious brunch/ lunch.
All in all, a very successful morning where all the senses were filled with pleasure. The joy of being out in a (finally) dry Sydney in some of the most beautiful bush scenery and some of the most fun roads to drive on.
I absolutely can’t wait to do the next one. Bring it on Ash/ BMW Club!!!
MOTORFEST
The Euro Motorfest held on the Newcastle Foreshore is one of my favourite events of the year. This is not just because it’s nice and close to home for me, but also because the location is perfect for a day out with the car. Foreshore Park is overshadowed by Fort Scratchley and Nobbys Beach on one side, with Newcastle city and the port entrance on the other.
This year’s event held an even more special place for me, as it was the first time I took my own car along – and it was driven there by my 17-year-old daughter on her red P plates. Now, you might think I would be worried about that, but my real worry for the day was something else entirely: driving a brand new BMW M3 Touring, after BMW Newcastle Dealer Principal Gerry Swan handed me the keys.
Through my regular visits to local dealers as the editor of the magazine, I’ve had many opportunities to chat with Gerry at BMW Newcastle. He mentioned he was keen to be more involved with the club, and before I knew it, he had lined up three amazing cars to bring along to Euro Motorfest to join us for the day. The lineup included a Fire Red Metallic BMW M2 (new to the M2 range in 2025), a John Cooper Works Mini, and a Black Sapphire Metallic M3 Touring – which I was privileged to drive.
At 8 am, most of the club met in the Honeysuckle car park for a quick chat, which mostly consisted of complaining about how cold it was that morning.
We then headed to Euro Motorfest in convoy, where we set up for the day, admired each other’s cars, had a laugh, and enjoyed the wide range of other marques at the show.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bruce and Patty and their exquisite Z3, which had been driven down from Glen Innes for the show. You wouldn’t have guessed they had travelled over seven hours on rough NSW roads – their car looked like it had just rolled out of the dealership.
After enjoying the morning, which turned out to be a perfect sunny day, it was time for the MG Car Club to announce the winners. First up was the People’s Choice Award. Voted number one was David Hogg’s perfectly presented 1991 V12 Glacier Blue BMW 850.
But the awards didn’t stop there for David, as the BMW Drivers Club NSW was also presented with the Best Club Display award. I believe it’s the first time our club has won this award at this event.

MOTORFEST
If you haven’t had the chance to experience Euro Motorfest in Newcastle, I highly recommend adding it to your calendar for next year.
With over 300 cars on display this year, representing an incredible variety of European marques, there truly was something for every enthusiast to enjoy. From rare classics and pristine restorations to the very latest performance models, the show offered a feast for the senses.
Combine that with the stunning harbour backdrop, relaxed atmosphere, and the chance to connect with fellow car lovers, and it makes for an unforgettable day out. Whether you come to display your pride and joy, admire others’ builds, or soak up the automotive passion, Euro Motorfest is an event that never disappoints.

June: The Winston at Winston Hills
Tuesday Lunch for June made its way west to The Winston at Winston Hills with a smaller group of the usual ‘lunchers’ for another social lunch.
July 15 : Vikings Sports Club
In July we tried a new venue, Vikings Sports Club in Dundas. This was attended by 13 members of our usual lunch socialites.
The time soon whiles away while discussing BMW cars, obviously, BMW Club events, some motorsport discussion with several lunchers being involved in the Clubs’ motorsport, other activities we have been up to and if time permits, world problems that may need some attention.
Before we know it, the clocks is past 3pm and discussion turns to heading home.
Tuesday Lunch is open to all members so if you have some time on a Tuesday come and join fellow club members for a social lunch. Check the clubs’ website events for dates and venues and register for lunch.

EUROWERKE HAPPY FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY
There’s something special about watching a carpark slowly fill with the shapes and sounds of incredible machines just as the sun begins to rise. Last Sunday marked a huge milestone for us—EuroWerke’s 15th Anniversary—and we celebrated it the best way we know how: with a Cars & Coffee event at The Vicar in Dural.
We rolled in at 5:30am, the air crisp at just 4 degrees, the sky faintly glowing behind a veil of fog. No wind, just the kind of stillness that makes exhaust notes echo that little bit sweeter. Two of our crew were already there, shaking off the cold and getting stuck into marquee setup and vehicle placement.
By 6:30am, the venue was starting to take shape. Marquees up, the fog lifting, and the first wave of cars being carefully moved into position. Leading the charge was Grimace, followed closely by our M140i race car. Then came some familiar favourites from our extended EuroWerke family— Alfa from Rein Garage with his clean F80 M3, and the sleek presence of Danny’s McLaren 720s from Bigboi Car Care. The stage was set—and the best was yet to come.
The event was due to officially kick off at 7:30am, but by 7:00, the carpark had already begun to come alive. One by one, headlights pierced through the morning fog, engines humming as a trickle of cars quickly turned into a stream. It started with the usual suspects—clean Euros rolling in with that familiar low growl—but it wasn’t long before the variety exploded. A wave of JDM classics followed, soon joined by the unmistakable rumble of Aussie muscle.
It was everything we love about Cars & Coffee: the unexpected mix, the mutual appreciation, the effortless blend of styles. Slowly but surely, every corner of the carpark began to fill out. The BMW Club of NSW made their presence known, locking down the rear row with a strong lineup. Up
front, the G81 M3 Touring Global crew rolled in with authority, staking out their place and setting the tone with a stunning fleet. And nestled right between them, like the perfect puzzle piece, were our longtime friends from Enthusiast Motor Insurance—joining us not just for the love of cars, but to celebrate their own 15-year milestone alongside ours. That felt special.
By 8:15am, it was official—the carpark was completely full. All 390 spots, gone. And the event had only just started. From there, it was all hands on deck for traffic control. With cars still pouring in, we pivoted fast—double parking where we could, triple parking when we had to. It turned into a living, breathing car show in motion.
People wove through the cars, coffee in hand, chatting with mates or stopping to admire something rare, something loud, something unexpected. The energy was electric—the

kind that only comes when the passion is real and shared by everyone in the space.
By 9am, the coffee line was almost as long as the traffic jam trying to get in. The Vicar’s staff were absolute legends— moving like a well-oiled machine under pressure. But as these things go, halfway through the rush, one of their coffee machines gave out. That left six baristas juggling one machine and a fast-growing crowd. Still, the vibe never wavered.
Despite the longer than usual wait, everyone kept smiling. People chatted, laughed, admired the cars around them, and sipped their coffees when they finally got them like they were a rare delicacy—which they kind of were at that point. The baristas even pulled us aside to say how incredibly kind and patient our little car community had been. That’s the stuff that makes us proud.
By 9:30, we were at full saturation. The car count had officially tipped over 420, and we had to start turning people away. A new message lit up on the digital sign at the carpark entrance - “Car park full” - and traffic control began politely directing hopeful arrivals to do a lap around the block while we tried to squeeze cars out and shuffle others in. It became a precision dance of movement, and honestly, watching it unfold in real-time was wild.
For Oscar and Ozzy, the brothers behind Eurowerke, it was a moment to soak it all in. There were hugs with old customers, handshakes with industry friends, and quiet moments with family that spoke volumes. Neither of them expected the turnout to be this massive, or this moving. But as they stood back, looking over a sea of cars and familiar faces, it clearly meant the world. They had these words to share:
“On behalf of EuroWerke, our families and staff, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to every single person who joined us for our 15th Anniversary Cars & Coffee. Your presence and
kind gestures meant the world to us. It was an emotional day—one filled with pride, gratitude, and an overwhelming sense of community.
Over 420 cars rolled through The Vicar, and the car park and café were buzzing with energy, laughter, and love. To see so many customers, friends, family, and fellow car enthusiasts take time out of their Sunday morning to celebrate this milestone with us was truly humbling. Thank you for being part of something so special.”
“To our incredible team – past and present – thank you. Without our ‘Werke’ family, EuroWerke wouldn’t be what it is today. Every single one of you has played a part in building something truly special. Others may try to replicate what we’ve created, and yes, we’ve had staff poached over the years – but what can’t be copied is the spirit, the bond, and the loyalty that exists within these walls. Team EuroWerke isn’t just a name – it’s a family, and we are deeply grateful to have shared this journey with you.”
By 10am, just half an hour before the official end time, the carpark started to slowly breathe again. Groups of car enthusiasts began to roll out in convoys, off to their next Sunday stop. Others parked up properly and wandered inside to grab lunch, still buzzing from the morning’s vibe.
It was one of those events where the memories outlast the noise, where the connections feel a little deeper, and where you go home with a full heart (and maybe a full SD card too).
As the last engines fired up and the final coffees were sipped, we breathed it in, fully present. What started as a cold, foggy morning had turned into one of the most memorable days in EuroWerke’s journey so far. Our 15th Anniversary Cars & Coffee wasn’t just a celebration of years in business—it was a celebration of the community that’s grown around it.
From loyal customers and passionate car clubs to industry partners and lifelong friends, everyone who showed up brought something special with them. It reminded us why we do what we do—and why we’ll keep doing it for many years to come. Until next time, thank you for making this day one for the books.

June 2025
On early Sunday morning 6 July 2025, our meet up point for the Club’s Winter Historic Drive and Lunch to Hartley Vale was McDonalds at McGraths Hill.
This is a pretty popular meeting point for car clubs heading off on a drive out west. Arriving at approximately 8:20am, the car park was almost full. Unbeknownst to us, the Porsche and Subaru WRX clubs were also meeting there for a drive and so it was somewhat tricky to grab a spot to park. Nevertheless, I found a parking spot between a Holden Torana XU1 and a BMW E92. I conducted a quick inspection
of the full range of vehicles on display and caught up with a few other Club members before our punctal departure at 8:45am. From McDonalds, we drove through historic Windsor, taking the scenic Bells Line of Road to Mount Victoria, which would be our first pit stop.
Whilst there are a few coffee shops located at Mount Victoria, many of us entered the recently renovated and charming Victoria and Albert Guesthouse and Café, as we had been advised that this venue had this massive fireplace (with ample seating) which would warm us up.

WINTER HISTORIC DRIVE
And yes, the fireplace was huge and was generating lots of heat. I note that the coffee and cakes were also very nice and tasty as well.
Surprisingly the roads so far (and for the rest of our drive) were in reasonable condition with only the odd pot hole so we were able to comfortably drive along the sweeping roads without being too worried about damaging our cars. The turn off to Mount Victoria couldn’t have come at a better time. As we approached this turn-off, we all had to slow down which was a blessing.
There was a police car with radar no more than 50 metres further along the Bells Line of Road, which would probably have caught me and I am sure a few other Club members. I was later advised that this police radar is often located in the same position on weekends, so be aware if you are driving this route on weekends!
underway. Club members were happily mingling and chatting with others about their cars. There was certainly a wide variety of classics and modern vehicles attending this drive. Of note, there were a number of popular E30’s which are always lovely to look at.
Three very impressive E31’s was amongst the group, including David Stuart-Watt’s 1990 silver 850i, Laurie Bilsborough 1993 840Ci and Giannino Garcia’s 1996 M8. It is hard to believe that this series was first released in 1990.
I BELIEVE THIS BMW COULD PERFORM WELL IN CONCOURS
AT SUPERFEST
Our second stop on our drive was the Lithgow Blast Furnace historic site. I am told this site was established in 1886 and was the first iron and steel casting facility in Australia. More importantly, the car park was empty when we arrived and so it gave us car enthusiasts a good opportunity to park all of our BMW’s adjacent to each other and carry out inspections. Bonnets, boots, doors etc. were being opened and inspections of engine bays and car interiors was well
Even today, these E31’s still just look fantastic, with a design that has not aged or dated over the past 25 years.
I was also particularly impressed with David Hogg’s beautiful (E39) 528i Hamann, a relatively recent purchase he told me. I believe this BMW could perform well in Concours at this October BMW SuperFest event if he were to enter it. Having owned an E39 before, this series was a very well designed and manufactured BMW. In its day, I recall it had excellent reviews in all of the car magazines and so I ended up purchasing one. I loved touring in the car. It gave me immense pleasure to drive either in the traffic congested Sydney or on the open road. As it was so well manufactured, I had no mechanical problems with it.
Our final destination was the delightful Collits Inn at Hartley Vale, which was only short drive from Lithgow. Here we were served lunch in an old barn. Inside the barn there was another log fire roaring away and providing much warmth. Looking upwards towards the roof, a few of us noticed that there were holes in the corrugated iron roofing.
Luckily for us there was no rain on the day. Whilst there was a chill in the air early morning, by mid-morning and certainly by lunchtime, it ended up being a beautiful sunny day. Luckily, we did not require our winter woollies in the barn as the sun was shining brightly and there was minimal wind.
Upon arrival at Collits Inn, we were served canapes and then sat down in the barn where we enjoyed shared platters of rolled chicken stuffed with ham and cheese, accompanied with seasonal vegetables and with roasted baby chat potatoes and lamb shoulder with farmhouse gravy, accompanied with roasted baby chat potatoes and seasonal vegetables.
The food, company, conversations and banter with the other Club Members was perfect. It was a great day out and it appeared that all Club members were enjoying themselves. Thank to Ash for organising the event.

Whether your BMW has been resting over winter, sitting idle during your travels, or simply parked for months awaiting the next club run, starting it after storage requires more care than simply turning the key and driving away.
Before starting your engine, take a moment to give your car a thorough visual inspection. Check under the bonnet and around the engine bay for signs of rodents or nests – wiring damage and chewed insulation are unfortunately common after a long storage period. Walk around the car and look underneath for fluid leaks (sweating horsepower) such as oil, coolant, brake fluid, or transmission fluid. Inspect your tyres carefully for cracks, flat spots, and ensure they are inflated to BMW’s recommended specifications to ensure safe handling and optimal ride quality.
Batteries often lose a significant amount of their charge when stored. If you used a battery maintenance system while the car was in storage (as suggested in our last article), you should not have to worry about the next steps. If yours remained connected without a maintenance system, it may now be flat or weakened.
Charge the battery fully before attempting to start the car. If it struggles to hold a charge, consider replacing it to avoid electrical issues.
Once these checks are complete, press the brake pedal to ensure it feels firm and inspect the brake discs for surface rust. Light oxidisation (rust) usually clears after gentle brak-

ing, but heavy pitting may require machining or replacement to restore safety and smoothness.
Start your BMW and let it idle patiently until it reaches operating temperature. Do another walk around the car to listen carefully for unusual noises, such as tapping, knocking, or squealing belts, and watch for fluid leaks underneath the engine while it is running.
When idling is stable, take the car for a gentle test drive to evaluate braking, steering response, and acceleration. Pay close attention to any vibrations caused by tyre flat spots, and ensure the temperature gauge remains within its normal range to confirm the cooling system is functioning correctly.
If you’re driving a convertible, consider driving with the roof up initially to check for wind noise or leaks before opening it up for the sunshine.
Finally, after your short drive, recheck all fluid levels while the car is still warm and inspect it again for any new leaks. If vibrations persist or the brakes feel uneven, it’s wise to book a professional inspection before heading out on a spirited club run or a long touring drive.
Your BMW is engineered to deliver exceptional performance and driving pleasure. Taking the time to revive it after storage carefully ensures it remains reliable, safe, and ready to create more unforgettable driving experiences. After all, a BMW is designed to be driven – and cared for – to truly enjoy everything it has to offer.

Reviewing Our Supersprint Class Structure: Keeping It Fair, Simple, and Competitive
Club committee member Philip Middlebrook recently carried out a detailed review of the BMW Drivers Club NSW Supersprint class structure. Prompted by feedback suggesting the system had become overly complex, the review aimed to assess the effectiveness of the current structure and compare it with systems used by other clubs to ensure fairness and competitiveness across all entries.
Our Current Class System
At present, the club runs eight classes for BMW vehicles, two for non-BMW vehicles, and one dedicated class for Lotus cars. The BMW-specific classes cover everything from standard road cars to M series and heavily modified vehicles. Classification is calculated using a structured formula based on each car’s published power-to-weight ratio. Additional points are applied for performance modifications, chassis upgrades, and other non-stock features. These points determine whether a car is placed in a standard road class, an M car class, or a modified and competition class.
How Other Clubs Do It
To ensure our system remains relevant and effective, Philip looked at class structures used by other Supersprint championships.
The Combined Sports Car Association (CSCA) runs six main classes based on vehicle age and level of modification, each further divided by engine size.
The Porsche Club NSW operates nine main classes with multiple sub-classes. Cars are rated by power-to-weight ratio and assigned to one of six road classes, while unregistered, highly modified, or slick-tyre cars compete in one of three open classes, also based on power-to-weight ratio.
Despite differing methodologies, these systems share the same core goal: ensuring fair and competitive racing.

SUPERSPRINT CLASS STRUCTURE
Findings from the Review
Overall, the BMW Drivers Club NSW’s current classing system was found to be efficient and fair, providing a consistent framework that accommodates our diverse range of vehicles. By using published power-to-weight data alongside modification points, the system achieves an equitable distribution of cars across all classes.
Recommendations Going Forward
A principle identified in the review summed up the philosophy behind an effective classing structure: “The intent of the class system is to ensure that all competitors have an equal opportunity to succeed.” This sentiment perfectly aligns with the goals of our Supersprint program and should be formally adopted in future communications.
The review recommends maintaining the existing class system in its current form and adopting the guiding statement to reinforce our commitment to fair competition.
Minor refinements in how the system is communicated or documented could further improve clarity for participants. Additionally, it is suggested that the relevance of the nonBMW classes be reviewed to ensure they continue to align with club objectives.
The Supersprint remains a highlight of our club motorsport calendar, and it is critical that our class system continues to provide fair, enjoyable, and competitive racing for all members. Thanks to Philip Middlebrook’s thorough review, the BMW Drivers Club NSW is well positioned to maintain a robust and respected program into the future.
BMW V PORSCHE THE CHALLENGE
The annual BMW vs Porsche Challenge returned to Sydney Motorsport Park on 18 May, with 67 BMWs and 60 Porsches tackling the Gardner GP circuit in a full day of Supersprint action.
As Round 2 of our 2025 BMW Supersprint Championship and Round 4 of Porsche Club NSW’s series, the day brought together some of the sharpest cars and drivers from both clubs. While most drivers were chasing points in their regular class championships, the real focus was the friendly but fiercely contested interclub challenge.
Each club selected five drivers in each of five speed-based groups to represent them in the Challenge, with points awarded to those who lapped closest to - but not faster than - their group’s nominated breakout time.
The target times this year were unlimited for Group 1, then 1:46, 1:51, 1:54, and 1:57.5 for Groups 2 through 5. This format rewarded consistency, discipline, and smart driving over outright speed. The cars ran in staggered speed groups throughout the day, giving drivers a chance to compete on track in clean air while observing proper Supersprint etiquette.

Cool, damp conditions early in the morning gave way to a dry and fast surface by late morning, allowing most competitors to get their best laps in by the afternoon. There was plenty of action, including a dramatic but harmless spin from an F80 M3 in Turn 1.
Around the pits, a relaxed and social vibe encouraged plenty of cross-club conversation, with a pit-lane photoshoot capturing some standout cars before the on-track sessions got underway.
The Challenge points told the story of the day - Porsche won Groups 1 and 5, but BMW claimed victory in Groups 2, 3, and 4 to take the overall win with 115 points to Porsche’s 80. Congratulations to our Challenge team for their superb performance - it’s a great result and a reminder that while the rivalry is strong, the friendship between the clubs is even stronger. See you at SuperFest for Supersprint 4 on the same Gardner Ciruit.

NIGHT MOVES
Photos by: Andrew Green
July 5th was a blast at the BMW Club NSW Driver Experience Night on the Amaroo Circuit at SMSP. Nothing quite like driving under those brilliant LED lights – it’s such a different vibe from daytime, and the track just feels alive.
The club put on a great “Come and Try” night, and the volunteer instructors were flat-out, jumping in and out of
cars run after run. They gave us plenty of tips, and you could really see drivers picking up the pace as the night went on.
The cool winter air, the glow of the lights, and the line-up of cars looking incredible-whether gloss, metallic, matte, or wrapped-made it all feel pretty special.
Words:
SS3 - AMAROO
Months of torrential rain in Sydney augered badly for SS3. After a lucky break with the SS2 where the weather cleared, could we be looked upon favourably by the weather gods?
Added to my angst was a one hour journey to the track on semi-slicks, which I hadn’t driven on the road before, in my 45 year old E24 JPS Tribute, in the rain, at 7am.
I made it to the track almost unscathed. A fuse finally gave out after wipers, fans and lights were running full blast on the way to the track, which took out lights and blinkers. But I made it!
Pulling into the car park I was confronted with all types of exotic BMWs, from the latest M3 Tourings, to Z3s, E92s, E36s, E46s, Z4s, M3s, M4s and of course a fleet of M2’s.
To their credit many competitors came well equipped to deal with the conditions with wet tyre options and cabanas. As always Trevor Kilner gave us a reality check on the conditions. He didn’t have to tell me twice to just keep the car on the track, as once youre on the grass, there is literally zero grip to stop you going into a wall.
The track eventually dried up enough for the groups to go out. it looked like everyone was having a good time despite the damp conditions. As Bob Williams pointed out, it was actually good expereince to drive on a damp track to work out what you and the car were comfortable with.
We managed to get a few more sessions in before the light rain came back in the afternoon, and again those who were comfortable with the conditions went out. The e24 performed well, despite a fuel pickup issue in one session, and a full tank seemed to fix that.
My take out of the day is that despite the weather it’s still possible to have a lot of fun and learn new ways to handle your car. The trick is to drive within your comfort zone. I didn’t set out to break any lap records and I let faster cars through (as I was in the slowest group) and I still had a great, safe time.
So I’d encourage anyone thinking of getting on the track to come and enjoy a Come and Try Session, or Track day (which this SS included). It’s a great way of easing into motorsport and lets you enjoy your BMW whatever level of experience you have.
